A cover letter is a chance to expand upon the bullet points outlined in your resume . It’s a space where you can explain your interest in the role and company, highlight your experience and skills, and sell a recruiter on the overall fit you’d make. 

But a career changer needs to do all of that and more. You also need to help recruiters and hiring managers understand why you’re moving away from your former line of work, what you want to achieve in your new career path, and any transferable skills that will help make your transition smooth.

1. Clarify your career change context

Explaining why you’re interested in changing careers and how the role you’re applying to fits within your larger career aspirations can preemptively contextualize your story. Plan to include a career change objective somewhere in your cover letter, much like you would a resume objective to provide a summary of a person’s experience and goals. Don’t be afraid to build a sense of personality so recruiters can better connect you with your objective.  

What this looks like: I’ve spent the last six years translating complex topics for various users as a technical writer. But in that time, I’ve realized that what drives me is the user’s experience. It’s the lightbulb moment behind my career change to UX design . I believe I’ll make a strong addition to your team because my work has largely put the user front and center, and now I’m interested in focusing on a different facet of that goal.

Transferable skills are “portable,” in that you take them from job to job. They include problem-solving, critical thinking, attention to detail, and more. Show recruiters that you have important skills to help you do the job so they can understand the unique value you’d bring to their company.  

It can also help to find out the key technical skills the job requires and spend time learning what you can, especially when it comes to important software or tools. 

What this looks like: As a software developer, I regularly relied on my problem-solving skills to think through complex issues. I’ll bring that same skill, as well as my attention to detail, listening, and decision-making, to ABC High School as the new algebra teacher. 

4. Highlight your past achievements 

Any time you can highlight what you’ve managed to accomplish in your past roles, you help a recruiter see your potential in a new role. Where possible, summarize any moments that showcase your strengths and illustrate your work ethic or character. 

What this looks like: I pride myself on being a team player and a problem-solver. As a social media manager at Company X, I identified a better program to help my team schedule content. Using that tool improved my team’s efficacy, leading to our most successful quarter.

The idea of a career path can sometimes be rigid, suggesting that people only follow one specific track. Although that perspective is starting to shift, it’s still prevalent. Throughout my writing journey pertained to the scientific world, I have experiences various strategies that have portrayed any given message diversely, towards any intended audience. With the use of many different writing strategies, being able to provide, as well as receive peer review will only prove to be advantageous towards our writing capabilities. One strategy that will endure throughout my scientific career is the skill of collecting data, analyzing it, and expressing/presenting it to a specific audience. This can be seen in research where data is collected from experiments, which is then interpreted and presented to a group of other scientists in hopes to learn more from it. This can be seen in the context shift assignment where I have collected various forms of data from a specific neighborhood I have chosen to talk about and take the data/information I have gained and put it in some sort of visual representation. While figuring out how to conduct the form of presentation, I first identified the audience I intend on proposing the data towards, and from that I can select which form of visual representation is the most effective. Although the science world is extremely formal and typically interpreted through the numbers/findings of the experiments, it is still vital to have the literary/rhetorical aspects influenced onto the writing as well. Things like appealing to logic and credibility can be used in a scientific paper towards an area of research or topic, with other scientists being the audience. In my Op-Ed response, I mentioned, “Even with these cases only impacting a small percentage of our population, that chunk can still carry the weight of millions of people worldwide, where the U.S. committed roughly $966 billion on helping rare disease cases in 2019. This may seem like a lot of money is being used in rare diseased cases, but only impact a small fraction of our population, but of that population lives are being saved, pain is being treated for those who had no say in their genetic makeup, money spent easing their way of life with the deformities they were given.” This area of my piece accurately depicts the use of statistics to add onto the credibility of the product, but also appeals to emotion by causing the audience to feel sympathy for those who need the extensive care. Despite the formality being necessary in these forms of writing, it is as important to take into consideration which writing strategy you will use to represent your topic most effectively.

As important as it is conducting a plan towards your writing, being able to give help to your peers, as well as receiving it can be very beneficial towards your writing capabilities. These peer reviews make it so you can identify any outliers in a certain writing piece, that can help better your own piece, and even someone else’s. For example, when peer reviewing Amber’s Op-Ed, I pointed out that she did not cite her sources in the text, and following this peer assessment, she has fixed it and diverted herself from losing any points from that section. Although it can be difficult between friends to give strong feedback, I maintain my professionalism regardless in benefit to that person’s writing skills and work towards finding any areas of improvement in order for them to achieve the best they can. I believe that constructive criticism in general is the determining factor of self-improvement and so not only I enjoyed receiving the feedback, but providing insight for my peers, knowing it would benefit them, is the reason why I do it in the first place.
