Scholars in the doctoral program in Organizational Behavior at Harvard Business School are prepared to pursue an interdisciplinary inquiry into issues that are broadly related to the functioning of individuals within groups, at either the micro or macro level. Graduates of our program go on to become the leading researchers and thinkers in organizational behavior, shaping the field and advancing theoretical understanding in posts at schools of management or in disciplinary departments.

The Organizational Behavior program is jointly administered by the faculty of Harvard Business School and the Department of Sociology in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and students have the opportunity to work with faculty from both the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Harvard Business School.

Curriculum & Coursework

Our program offers two distinct tracks, with research focused either on the micro or macro level. Students who choose to focus on micro organizational behavior take a psychological approach to the study of interpersonal relationships within organizations and groups, and the effects that groups have on individuals. In macro organizational behavior, scholars use sociological methods to examine the organizations, groups, and markets themselves, including topics such as the influence of individuals on organizational change, or the relationship between social missions and financial objectives.

Your core disciplinary training will take place in either the psychology or sociology departments, depending on the track that you choose. You will also conduct advanced coursework in organizational behavior at HBS, and complete two MBA elective curriculum courses. Students are required to teach for one full academic term in order to gain valuable teaching experience, and to work as an apprentice to a faculty member to develop research skills. Upon completion of coursework, students prepare and present a dossier that includes a qualifying paper, at least two other research papers, and a statement outlining a plan for their dissertation. Before beginning work on the dissertation, students must pass the Organizational Behavior Exam, which presents an opportunity to synthesize academic coursework and prepare for an in-depth research project.

Eligibility Criteria  

  • You must have a bachelor’s degree in commerce . If you have your Bachelor’s degree but have not yet completed all the requirements for your PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) , then you can apply to take up full-time research at this time. 
  • You must have minimum 55% aggregate marks (60% for SC/ST/PWD) out of 100 marks (or equivalent) in each subject with at least 3 years work experience as an assistant professor or lecturer at any Indian university or college. Where he/she taught at least two subjects during that period and had passed with at least 60%. 
  • If he/she has some other qualification or training program during his career, it may be considered as qualifying steps towards his PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) eligibility criteria but does not qualify him as such 

PhD in Commerce: Admission Process  

  • PhD in Commerce is a research-based degree. 
  • It is also a postgraduate program, which means that it can be pursued at the University or College level. 
  • A PhD in Commerce can be pursued at either an Australian or New Zealand university, depending on your country of origin. 
  • The duration of study for this degree is 3 -5 years (6-9 semesters).

Step 1 - Apply to the college with all the relevant documents.

Step 2 - The Selection Committee will call eligible candidates possessing the minimum educational requirements for an interview andor test.

Step 3 - Based on the academic record and the performance of the candidates in the interview, the Selection Committee will recommend the names of candidates found suitable for admission.

PhD in Commerce Entrance Based Admission

Step 1 - Candidates need to register to the official website by providing their email id, mobile number, and password.

Step 2 - Filling up the online form with personal and academic details and course details.

Step 3 - Upload all the scanned documents like candidate’s Photograph, Signature, Photo Identification, mark sheets, caste certificate, etc.

Step 4 - Submit the application fee and form, and download the form for future references.

Step 5 - Admit cards will be issued to the eligible students based on the information provided by candidates.

Step 6 - On the announcement of results, based on the marks obtained by the students and institutes cut off, seats and academic records of the candidate’s seats are allocated.

PhD in Commerce Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates should hold a Master’s Degree in Commerce / MBA / MPhil in commerce from a recognized university/institution.
  • Minimum aggregate marks required for master degree are 55%.
  • In the case of reserved category SC / ST / OBC / PH candidates relaxation of 5% marks or equivalent grade is given as per UGC guidelines.
  • Candidates who are in the final year of their masters are also eligible to apply, provided they complete all their qualifying degree requirements before the third week of July.
  • Experience of five years of teaching/industry/administration is also demanded by few colleges.
  • There is no age bar to apply for the course.

PhD in Commerce Entrance Exams

Candidates need to qualify the entrance exam conducted by UGC, State or university to secure a seat in PhD in Commerce. Below is a list of some entrance exams applicable for PhD programs:

  • The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency for admission to various PhD courses.
  • The UGC NET score is valid for 3 years in case of JRF and Lifetime for Assistant Professor.
  • This entrance exam does not have any restriction on the number of attempts.
  • It is available in 84 subjects at 91 selected cities.
  • It is conducted online and consists of two papers of 100 marks each mainly in Hindi and English.
  • The candidates would have to attempt a total of 150 questions in three hours.
  • It is held twice a year in the months of June and December.

UGC CSIR NET

  • It is a national-level exam conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA) to select candidates for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and for determining their eligibility for appointment as lecturers in Indian universities and colleges.
  • It is a Computer Based Test mode only.
  • Online applications are invited twice a year on an all India basis through Press Notification.

How to prepare for the PhD Entrance Exam?

To perform well in these examinations, candidates should have an in-depth knowledge of all the important topics of Commerce. Generally, the PhD entrance exam pattern consists of two parts i.e Research Aptitude and Subject Specific.

  • Research aptitude section consists of logical reasoning, numerical ability and Language Proficiency.
  • The Subject-Specific section consists of various topics included in the compulsory / core papers at the Post Graduation level.
  • The PhD entrance test questions paper is divided into objective type (Multiple Choice questions ) and subjective type questions for a maximum of 100 points, and the examination period is two hours, or in some cases three hours.

Like many children of first-generation immigrants, Oscar Molina grew up feeling like he had two career choices: doctor or lawyer. He seemed destined for the former as he excelled in high school and planned to major in biochemistry at the University of California at Los Angeles, but as an undergraduate, he fell in love with research.

“I was fascinated by discovery. As I did it more in college, I realized I didn’t want to be a doctor,” he says. “Once I saw that I could make an impact and be at the forefront of therapy with biotech, I knew I wanted to do that.”

If the next couple of years go as planned, his parents will indeed see their son become a doctor — just not exactly the way they might have guessed. He’s entering the fifth year of his PhD program in biology at MIT and is currently working in the lab of Professor Ronald Raines, researching the potential of proteins to kill cancer cells.

Molina, who is the first in his family to attend college, also works to support his fellow students through outreach and community-building efforts. In various roles, including as a Graduate Community Fellow in MIT’s Office of Graduate Education, he sought to connect and encourage students from underrepresented backgrounds as they pursued their own graduate studies.

“I had a lot of opportunities presented to me that made me ask, ‘Why me?’” he says. “I recognize that they were super valuable, and that’s why I should deliver that back to other people.”

Unlocking protein construction chemically

The spirit of giving back isn’t just limited to Molina’s work outside of the lab. He chose chemical biology and the pursuit of new cancer therapies as his research focus partly because his grandfather has been dealing with the disease for the last 10 years. The ultimate goal guiding his research is to make all protein-based cancer therapies more effective.

He and other collaborators in the Raines Lab published a paper in June that takes an important step in that direction, suggesting a way to make fusion proteins with greater customization and improved performance. They discovered that a chemical called 3-bromo-5-methylene pyrrolone can be used to combine three proteins efficiently and with high levels of control and modularity, a significant advance given most of the techniques for protein conjugation are only able to combine two at a time in a single spot.

“Now, we can have chemical control of where we include different things, where we can kind of plug-and-play,” he says.

Researchers can now adjust multiple characteristics at the same time — for example, increasing the protein’s half-life or improving its ability to target cancer cells — while still achieving a homogenous end product. They’re also relevant to immune cell redirection therapies, which require multimeric protein chimeras to activate immune clearance of cancer cells.

“That’s the most interesting thing to me,” he says. “How do we give a biologic therapy the best opportunity to be active and efficacious?”

His upcoming thesis will center around that question as it relates to chemotherapies based on ribonuclease 1, an enzyme that is best-known for cleaving RNA.

Paying it back and paying it forward

While that thesis will likely demand more of Molina than any other project he’s worked on in the past, he’s no stranger to hard work. After his mother and father left their respective homes of Guatemala and El Salvador in the 1990s, they dedicated their lives to giving their children futures that they themselves didn’t have access to.

Witnessing their efforts impressed two beliefs into Molina’s worldview: the value of education and the importance of support. Among his family, he is the first to graduate from a U.S. high school, the first to attend a four-year college, and the first to attend graduate school. These “firsts” can weigh heavily, and as he began his studies at MIT, he knew how difficult it can be to carry that burden alone.

“I saw the need and wanted to help other people be the first in their family to do things like go to college,” he says. “I also wanted to help people with similar backgrounds to mine, like being an underrepresented minority or a first-generation college student.”

That desire led Molina to join MIT’s Office of Graduate Education as a Graduate Community Fellow in January 2022, where he worked on supporting various affinity groups across the Institute. This included helping groups out with logistics, funding applications, community outreach and cross-group collaborations. He also spent part of last summer as a pod leader for the MIT Summer Research Program, which works to prepare underrepresented students for graduate education and research.

He’s also leveraged his personal interests to volunteer with various community organizations in Cambridge and Boston. Despite his numerous commitments, he’s an avid marathon runner, and ran the 2022 Boston Marathon while raising nearly $8000 for Boston Scores, a program that provides educational and athletic opportunities for students in the Boston Public Schools system.

After graduation, Molina plans on joining a startup in Boston’s biotech scene while learning more about the venture capital firms that fund their research. Wherever he ends up, he plans on continuing to apply the core truths that brought him where he is now.

“I want to be at the forefront of creating therapies. I really like science. I really like helping others. I really like the ability to create things that are impactful,” he says. “Now it’s time to take that and find my way to what’s next.”

Achieving true omnichannel excellence in luxury retail is a formidable challenge due to the inherent need for high-touch customer experiences and the complexity of managing multiple distribution channels, including e-commerce and third-party resellers. Any experienced executive in the luxury trade will tell you that achieving true omnichannel excellence for luxury goods is next to impossible. The very nature of luxury retailing — which requires a high human touch — almost guarantees that the service experience will differ from store to store and across regions. This is compounded as soon as the luxury brand attempts to distribute its products via multiple channel types and becomes even messier when the distribution system includes e-commerce sales, some of which are brand-operated whereas others are reseller-managed.
