is so rich texturally that it is hard to imagine how two people alone could recreate such a sound live. The band is fronted by singer, songwriter and producer David Melbye who plays guitars, keyboards and bass and he is joined by Roberto Salguero on drums and percussion.

Heavy Water Experiment's rich sound is based on psychedelia, stemming directly from The Beatles's invention of the genre in "Tomorrow Never Knows", off the album. Indeed, "Book Colored Blue" quotes musically directly from "Tomorrow Never Knows". But don't get me wrong....neither this song, nor the band's sound overall can be said to be copyist: the influence is there for sure, and is acknowledged by the band, but their sound takes other influences and developments to create a clean but complex 21st century sound. "Book Colored Blue", which starts off with the clattering of pianos reminiscent of the ending of that famous Beatles song and then borrows its melody for the vocal part, develops into a blistering powerhouse of a song with a storming lead guitar part during its second half. It becomes much more than just a Beatles-influenced song, developing and expanding the themes with originality, and provides a fitting climax to an excellent album.

That song is representative of the whole: the music's roots are from 40 years ago but its spirit is very much of the 21st century. The production values reinforce that message too: it is squeaky clean, which to me says that whilst Melbye is happy to acknowledge the roots in his music (hence the CD's artwork) he is also indicating that he wants to live in the present. I heard no attempt to recreate the production techniques from 40 years ago as some "retro" bands do.

So whilst psychedelia tells you something about the soundscape it doesn't let you know about the complexities in the musical colors within this album. Three sonorities dominate the soundscape: each of them is not always present in every song but every composition has at least two of them and a few have all three. Probably the dominant sonority of the three is heavy bass music, stemming not only from a conventional bass played in fairly conventional style (aiding and abetting the drums to create the rhythmic structure) but also from an 8-string bass played in what sounds like a lead guitar style. It's a style of playing that instills a real "wall of sound" effect and when it is done as melodically as on it is very effective. It is music with muscle, it has a real presence.

Another strong feature is the near trance-like sonority of most of these compositions. One of the key ingredients leading to this effect is the electric piano playing, a beautiful texture, not too far up in the mix, just enough so that your mind focuses on it almost as if by magic, as oft-repeated motifs of short phrases are repeated mantra-like.

The third element brings the sweetness that is the "icing on the cake". Melbye shows a sharp acumen for melody throughout these compositions that is most obvious in those songs where acoustic guitars replace the 8-string bass but it is nevertheless a constant feature. Aided by his soft vocals and occasionally by some good harmonies it almost feels like the California Sound bolted in here - it works extremely well within the whole soundscape.

These different elements are both what gives variety and coherence to these songs. The variety comes in the strength of the individual elements within particular song. For instance, on a song like "Dementia" which features acoustic guitar the dominant element in the soundscape is not the bass but Melbye still manages to create a coherent feel by retaining enough factors from the other elements, weaving a unifying thread through the album. It has sweet melody, a mantric feel to sections of it and, of course, the conventional bass is chugging away there. In such a way the listener is happy to listen to this song, almost "pop", right next to the much heavier "Conflagration Song", without thinking twice - they both fit neatly into this fine album.

Within this rich soundscape, the listener can get enjoyment by choosing to focus on just one of the specific sonic elements and absorbing its intricacies or by listening more in a more conventional mode, in which case the music envelops you in its mantric tentacles and draws you in subliminally, leaving you playing it in your mind long after the disc has stopped.

Melbye has been a through quite a few bands and projects before Imogene/Heavy Water Experiments: Ludivine, Fuzz Beloved and Zanzibar. It is to be hoped that Heavy Water Experiments will be around long enough to deliver a follow-up to this excellent debut album. The only reason that it won't feature in my Top 25 for 2008 is that I've already sent my list to Pete!

Striving beyond retro-revivalism toward any and all sounds avant-psychedelic, Heavy Water Experiments dares originality and eclecticism.  From mellow and acoustic to heavy and dark, from ethereal psych folk to thunderous stoner rock, HWE achieves an atypical confluence of mainstream and experimentation.  Classic rock influences may abound, but so many media voices have never drawn comparisons to the same artists or group of artists—at least some testament to HWE’s uniqueness. The live ensemble has varied from 3 to 5 persons, with combinations of electric/acoustic guitar, 4/8-string bass, electric piano/organ, and drums.  Both male and female vocals of various timbres and styles have appeared, sometimes wordlessly, but a consistent emphasis on melody and emotion perseveres.  To date, the band has toured the US, the UK (twice), Holland, and Belgium.  In and around Los Angeles, the band has played a wide range of venues from Spaceland, The House of Blues, and The Viper Room to more acoustic-oriented venues like The Hotel Cafe, which culminated in being chosen as one of Amoeba Records' local picks and a more recent write-up inOC Weekly. The band's recordings have garnered well over 100 enthusiastic reviews internationally, including a full-page color feature in Classic Rock Magazine.  The current album has accumulated steady international momentum through underground radio airplay and live interviews from DJ's in the US, UK, Europe, and Australia.  Tracks from the album have also appeared on popular American TV shows such as Friday Night Lights, and the band's promo poster has appeared on sets for shows like The OC and 90210.  The band has also self-organized two underground music festivals in the neighboring Mojave Desert with many notable LA bands such as Crystal Antlers, Spindrift, andThe Binges performing.

Heavy Water Experiments

heavy water experiments band

LA-based Heavy Water Experiments passionately resists the tendency of modern bands to revive sounds of bygone eras. While admittedly taking influence from 60’s and 70’s genres such as psychedelic and progressive rock, this is a group who strives to break new ground according to an avant-garde or art rock sensibility. One of the ways HWE achieves this is through unique instrumentation, such as the use of an 8-string bass along with a regular 4-string bass, keyboards, and drums. However, the band never relies on this approach as a marketing gimmick since it also incorporates electric and acoustic guitars in the usual way.

The sound of the band is eclectic and can range from a dark, heavy quality to a mellower, acoustic-oriented vibe. Certain tracks might seem to fit well in the stoner rock category, for example, while others could be deemed indie rock or some other current genre. In the past, the band has used marriage characterizations such as “Pink Sabbath,“ “Doorphine,” and “Radio Queens of the Stone Head.” These are intended to underscore the notion that HWE neither sounds like one particular band nor like any specific combination of bands. Accordingly, HWE has been compared to a vast number of past-to-present artists, and yet there has never been a tendency toward one or even a few in particular.

So far, HWE has enjoyed a laudable degree of progress while still remaining independent. To date, the band has toured the US and the UK (twice) as well as performing a handful of shows in Holland and Belgium. Locally, the band has played a wide range of venues from Spaceland, The House of Blues, and The Viper Room to more acoustic-oriented venues like The Hotel Café, which culminated in being chosen as one of Amoeba Records’ local picks. The band’s newly released debut album has received enthusiastic reviews internationally, and the album has been accumulating steady international momentum through underground radio airplay and live interviews from DJ’s in the US, UK, Europe, and Australia. Tracks from the album have also appeared on popular American TV shows such as 'Friday Night Lights', and the band’s promo poster appeared on various sets for an entire season of 'The O.C.'. The band has also self-organized two underground music festivals in the neighboring Mojave Desert with many notable LA bands performing.

The band is fronted by singer, songwriter, guitarist, keyboardist, bassist, and producer David Melbye — an LA native whose past bands/projects include Ludivine. Fuzz Beloved, and Zanzibar. His creative/artistic partner Roberto Salguero, originally from El Salvador, plays drums and percussion. Also joining the live ensemble are Rebecca Black on keyboards/vocals and Rick Staggs on bass.

Heavy Water Experiments: Heavy Water Experiments

  • By Bob Lange

[rating=3.50]

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

Heavy Water Experiments feel heavy without being heavy. They deal more in ambient soundscapes than big guitar and keyboard flourishes, making for psychedelic trips that get well inside your gray matter before you can be consciously aware of what’s happening. If the album has a weakness, it may be that it is, at time sat least, too understated. "Dementia" even seems a bit light. However, they more that make up for these moments where they’ve held back a bit too much with the maddening pyschedelic energy of "Otherland" and the wild, trippy, early Floyd-esque textures of "Book Colored Blue."

For an album that never gets really heavy, this album sure is heavy. It’s not typical space rock, but wild psychedelic soundscapes hidden in loosely structured songs. And it taps into some of the best qualities of progressive rock. When it’s on, it’s quite a trip.

Dr. How's Science Wows

Science, Curiosity and Life

Fun Friday – Rubber Band Experiments – make a paper rocket and a catapult

My children had a couple of days off for mid term break last week, and I thought it would be a good idea to have a little project ready as a back up if they started to get cabin fever. I loved the idea of the rubber band bracelets described in this blog and decided it would be a great way to entertain all three children. However my attempts to purchase the correct rubber bands lead to five shop visits and a surplus of rubber bands in all kinds of shapes and sizes.

Not to be deterred we decided to put some to good use in the name of science ;0)

Elastic bands are great for exploring elasticity and learning about potential energy ! When we pull back on a rubber band we store energy in the band and this is called potential energy , when we let go of the rubber band all this energy is released (as kinetic energy ) as the band springs back into shape. Anything attached to the rubber band may be flung forwards or upwards with the force of this energy.

EXPERIMENT 1 – MAKE A PAPER ROCKET

The first experiment we show uses the potential energy stored in a rubber band to launch a paper rocket.

For this experiment you will need …

  • a piece of paper
  • an elastic band

EXPERIMENT 2 – MAKE A CATAPULT

The second experiment shows how to make a catapult. This time a lot of the potential energy in stored in lollipop sticks; when we push down on the lollipop stick and then let go the stick springs back up and the energy is released and used to shoot a ball into the air!

  • some lollipop sticks (we used the larger tongue depressors but regular ones are fine)
  • Elastic bands
  • A plastic bottle cap
  • A small ball or other object for launching (there are a few terrified looking lego men in this house at the moment!)

A certain junior scientist really enjoyed this particular “experiment” so I have decided to let him show you how…

Count out you lollipop sticks...

If you tried this out or have any questions just leave me a comment below…. I always love to hear from you!

Love your junior scientist, he really shows how much fun experiments like these are for kids 🙂

Thanks, yes he had a ball with this one, we made LOTS of catapults ;0)

I’m sorry the plan didn’t go exactly as intended, but I have to say you got a much more original blogpost out of it!

(Also, your son’s hair is fabulous!)

We still haven’t made the bracelets yet but will do very soon ;0)

Oh and thanks for the comment on R’s hair… I love it too, I’ll be in bits if/when he decides to cut those curls off!

For a long time it was considered that heavy water was incompatible with life. Experiments with the growing of cells of different organisms in 2H 2 O show toxic influence of deuterium. The high concentrations of 2H 2 O lead to the slowing down the cellular metabolism, mitotic inhibition of the prophase and in some cases - somatic
