I am well pleased to apply this application with concentration to study the course Information Systems Management MSc at the University of Bedfordshire. My interest in information technology and information systems drives me passionate to pursue management roles in charge of information systems. The course is designed to study aspects of information systems, digital analytics, marketing and the digital future and strategic management. From this course, I will be benefited from teamwork and engagement to contribute the ethical and innovative practice. Also from this MSc degree, I will learn the contemporary approaches to information systems management and how the approaches develop by challenges and opportunities. So, I am confident that this course is suitable to achieve my future career goal.

I have reviewed the programme of Information Systems Management MSc at the University of Bedfordshire and found some modules that are adjusted with the modern organisations and the global competitive business environment. By research, I came to know that this course is suitable for graduates who, through their interest in information technology and information systems wish to pursue management roles in charge of information systems. The modules include Business Dissertation, Digital Analytics and Online Customer Experience, Information Systems, Marketing and the Digital Future, Performance Achievement Planning, and Strategic Management. After progress to the Master's capstone stage, there will be an option to choose one of the three - Business Dissertation, Business Live Project, and Professional Practice. For that, students will learn to produce an individual, independent piece of work. And these modules will help me to broaden my knowledge of information technology and information systems on a professional level. Moreover, this course will be assessed by theories and concepts of real-life business situations, which will teach me to appreciate the importance of being dependable and give me an upper hand in my future career progression. After completion of my course, I want to be an Application/Business Analyst or Information System Manager in well-reputed organizations of my home country. I believe this course will be the right choice for my career plans and objectives.

I have completed my Bachelor of Science in Computer Science & Engineering from American International University Bangladesh (AIUB) in October 2021. Now, I had identified that I have an interest in the Information Systems Management sector and so that, I need to gain more comprehensive knowledge in the global competitive business environment. And this programme will develop my skills through employability practice-based teaching and learning approach in Information Systems theory against a context of real business. In addition, I am principled, dedicated, and self-motivated who is reliable in learning new skills. I am confident that my professional goal makes me a suitable candidate for the course.

By researching, I have come to know that this MSc course will explore the benefits of modern technologies and identify the problems associated with increasingly rapid rates of change in the information technology and business environment. By completing this MSc degree I will gain the concepts along with the number of important transferable skills that will be combined and evaluated in information systems management. In addition, it will also give me the professional experience phase which will make me career-ready. Moreover, the course has been designed to develop the graduates who are able to work by managing relationships through awareness of self and others to evaluate the ideas and contributing to team, will learn to appreciate the importance of being dependable. I think this course is ideal for me to improve my independence and self- development. My learned skills and detailed appreciation of my current knowledge will help me to complete my prospective study. I hope my chosen course will make it better and further open doors for my profession.

The brand of having a degree from the UK is highly respected by employers in Bangladesh as they believe that UK education molds proper professionals and there is an expectation are high from applicants with such degrees. Though, the study environment in my country follows theoretical systems of education which are quite different and no soft skills gained. In recent years, all companies in Bangladesh are emphasizing hiring of Bangladeshi graduates with degrees from abroad, as they see the transferrable skills carried forward from the international education will play a key role in transforming their approach to the business and believe these graduates are capable of doing so. This has played a key part in my decision-making when choosing a study destination. A recent Survey of International Graduate Outcomes 2019 by Universities UK International produced by graduate’s shows that 82% of international graduates say that their UK degree is worth the financial investment and the same percentage say they are satisfied with their careers. 83% feel that a UK degree has helped them to get jobs that they would not get otherwise. So this is the reason to choose the UK over other education destinations. I can see myself thriving more in a world of knowledge and teaching methods I’m accustomed to.

My choice is the University of Bedfordshire as it is incredibly welcoming to international students. To support students the University have invested heavily in their facilities to shape the physical and intellectual environment of learning. With over 22,000 students, the University provides outstanding higher education to people from all backgrounds and from over 120 countries, with a significant proportion of mature students and a growing international postgraduate community. According to DLHE 2018, 91% of graduates in work and/or further study within six months of graduating. Moreover, the University has campuses with excellent facilities. Tutors are high- qualified academics and most of them have received National Teaching Fellowship Awards. By researching a lot I have come to know that, Beds provide tuition to their students that goes way beyond the classroom. Conversely, I will have the opportunity to gain real-world knowledge and transferable skills that employers look for in graduate recruits. Actually, the University supports their students from a dedicated team during their course to get career-ready. And it will be a great achievement for me if I get the opportunity to study at the University of Bedfordshire.

Degree Objective: Ph.D. in Management Information Systems

It has been my childhood dream and a long-term academic goal to teach and publish research. Having majored in accounting in my undergraduate and graduate studies. I would now like to obtain a doctorate degree in Management Information Systems. I became interested in Information Technology several years ago when I served as both a project accountant and IT Manager at a design company and later as a business analyst for another firm. In my undergraduate study, I had the opportunity to be exposed to a range of business, statistics and information systems courses which reinforced my interest in accounting and information systems. In addition, I am a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and have taken graduate courses in financial statement analysis, data analytics, taxation of business entities, etc. which were enjoyable and enlightening providing me with a different view on the world in which we live. My undergraduate and master’s degree coursework involved a combination of accounting, statistics and Data Analytics courses. For the research requirement of my masters degree, I concentrated on the potential impact of blockchain technology for CPA’S and other practitioners.

My academic and professional goal is to conduct a world class research in Management Information Systems and publish in tier one journals drawing from influences of my academic studies. In terms of a career, I see myself teaching and publishing in finance My long-term career objective is to teach, conduct research and produce research publications that would add value and contribute to my field of specialisation. Completing a doctorate degree will bring a deep sense of accomplishment. It will give me the priceless opportunity to be challenged, motivated and learn. Although my career experience has provided me with an invaluable opportunity to further my knowledge in business analysis, project accounting and management, a doctoral program will allow me to continue with my quest for knowledge and provide me with an environment where I can conduct research.

Doctoral studies would be valuable to me in several ways. With an impressive faculty and a strong academic reputation, I believe my academic goals align with the Georgia State University (GSU) graduate program to which I am applying. Your doctoral program would allow me to think innovatively, use cutting edge research in Information Systems and establish myself as a leading researcher in information systems. I have no doubt that your school would contribute tremendously towards the achievement of my long-term goal. I am most impressed with gsu’s strength in business and computer science which had allowed it to develop expertise in business process and innovation. In addition, the school would provide me with the opportunity to work closely, share experiences, and exchange ideas with my professors and peers. The teaching assistant ship program would provide me with the practical teaching experience I am eager to acquire. Further, earning a Ph.D. in MIS would advance my other career goals by adding to my skills. I see the Ph.D. as an end in itself, as well as a professional stepping stone; I enjoy studying finance and would like to continue my studies on the level demanded by the Ph.D. program.

Throughout the course of my doctoral studies, I hope to examine the conflict between the traditional role of IT project management and innovation. Completing projects on time, within budget, and within scope has become a huge challenge for many organisations. Nearly half of businesses are experiencing project failure in a given year. I am interested in looking at the phases and processes in project management from the perspectives of people, process & tool focusing my research on project manager leadership, team work, team member competencies, project team effectiveness, including how to effectively initiate, plan, execute, control, and complete projects as well as examine new tools that are available to IT project managers, Through the Ph.D. program, I hope to find answers to the question of how to find the right strategy that allows for oversight without stifling creativity and how can businesses re-imagine IT project management to suit their unique needs. I plan to work further on best practices for managing large Information Technology projects using emerging technologies and prepare a paper suitable for publication in my studies toward the doctoral degree, I hope to examine more closely the relationship between people, processes and tools in project management and consider role of each of them..

I believe I can make a great contribution to Management Information Systems using my background and experience in project accounting and business analysis. My capabilities and motivation to do independent research at the doctoral level is enhanced by my strong knowledge of Information Technology and Business Administration, strong analytical ability, a passion for analyzing problems rigorously and solving them ingenuously, and an excellent writing and presentation skills. I am highly motivated and driven with a capacity to make significant contribution to society. As a professor, I would impact knowledge, encourage innovation, inspire students, and bring out their hidden talents.

There is still much to be explored and studied in information systems academia, and I believe that Georgia State University doctoral program would provide me with the knowledge necessary to understand and apply information systems theories which I could in turn bring to my teaching and research career. I am committed and determined to succeed at the Ph.D. program, and I am confident that I will be able to contribute to the university community in my area of interest. I know GSU to be a very reputable school and my discussions with some of your graduates have deepen my interest in attending the school. With an excellent faculty and staff, your school is among the best in Canada and I am looking forward to an opportunity to receive a world-class research training that would prepare me to make significant contributions to the field of management information systems. Personal Statement for Information Systems Management at De Montfort University

Being exposed to the complex and interconnected world of computer science comes with a lot of academic and career aspirations, especially with the fast-paced advancement in technology. As a professional with both academic background and work experience that has revolved around computer science and management, my decision to study Information Systems Management is a calculated effort to improve my qualifications and ensure that I develop the knowledge to proffer more practical, definitive, and knowledge-based solutions in my career.

My interest in information systems management was piqued years ago when I got my first job as a Data Entry Personnel in an engineering company. In this role, I was exposed to using information software to safely store data in an organized format and ensure easy recovery when it was needed. Before this job, I only had a Diploma certificate in Management Information Technology, but I became determined to improve my career chances through further studies. I later went on to obtain a Diploma in Computer Science, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from xxxx. During my undergraduate programs, I was exposed to interesting course modules like xxx (courses that relate to Information Systems Management) and while these modules have been instrumental in my success on the career front, I believe they have given me the foundation to succeed in this course.

Since I graduated with my bachelor’s degree, I have been applying my computer science knowledge as an ICT Educator and I have been able to harness information technology to contribute to the development of my students and the school in general. With the collaborative efforts of colleagues and the school management, I have been successful in redefining the school’s business operation using tech-enabled products to promote efficiency in key areas like bursary, data storage and management, and project management. My frequent involvement with certain business operations of the school has piqued my interest in further understanding how to leverage information technology to create value for businesses. I envision a career where I will be better at applying information systems to understand organizational processes and identify practical solutions to meet their needs, and I am motivated to make a move toward my dreams with this program.

Fortunately, I discovered the Information Systems Management program of De Montfort University through a social media post from a recent graduate who shared his experience studying and gave his vote of confidence for this program. When I did further research, I found that De Montfort University has one of the best student communities in the UK especially because it is located in the multicultural city of Leicester. Having gone through the program offering, I am convinced that studying here will be a good knowledge investment for me. By studying here, I will benefit from the Center for Computing and Social Responsibility’s collaborative efforts with worldwide partners, well-set-up laboratories, established academic experts, and a finely developed course module. Also, the optional placement year will be a perfect opportunity for me to prove and develop my work competencies and build an early information systems management portfolio.

In the long run, I look forward to……….. (long-term goal)and this program will give me the background, exposure, and competitive edge, that will boost my confidence to reach for better career opportunities. I look forward to your consideration.

If you are considering postgraduate study, you will need to think about writing an application that demonstrates why you are the right candidate for the course and their university. This is where your personal statement comes in.

You’ll already have written a personal statement for your undergraduate application, so the concept should be familiar. However, there are some things you should be aware of when it comes to writing specifically for postgraduate study.

In this guide, we’ll explain how to write a stand-out Masters personal statement and provide you with some valuable insights from our Masters Recruitment Manager Danielle, here at Warwick Business School (WBS).

What is a Masters personal statement?

An MSc personal statement, also known as a ‘statement of purpose’, supports your application to study a postgraduate course at university. It should highlight your key skills and experience whilst demonstrating your understanding of the course and conveying your academic skills and interests.

Your personal statement is your opportunity to sell yourself and differentiate yourself from any other applicant, share your passion for joining WBS and link your life experiences and skills to how you could contribute to a cohort.

How long should a Masters personal statement be?

A personal statement for postgraduate study should fit within two pages of A4. Whilst you won’t be penalised if it is slightly longer, you should always make sure the content is relevant and doesn’t repeat information elsewhere in your application.

What do you need to prepare before writing a Masters personal statement?

Before writing your personal statement for postgraduate study, there are a few things you should consider.

Research your options

Take the time to read through course pages and brochures. You’ll find in-depth information on what the course involves and how it might align with your career goals. Danielle explains how understanding what the course involves is key in demonstrating your suitability and passion for a course:

All of our course webpages feature extensive information on the course modules, so take the time to show you’ve done your research in your personal statement. Your personal statement is your chance to relate yourself to our core values and demonstrate what a strong candidate you will be for one of our programmes. Ensure you also use this as an opportunity to link our programme to your future career.

Course titles should not be taken at face value. Whilst some universities will have courses with the same titles, the content will differ. You need to demonstrate you understand what the course entails and why you want to apply for a particular course as. Danielle adds:

Take time to look at the content of the course you are applying for; although course titles may be the same at different universities the course content can be different. Do your research and demonstrate this in your personal statement, showing how invested you are in studying at WBS.

Consider what you want from your studies

The range of choice when it comes to postgraduate study is vast, and it can feel overwhelming when deciding which course is right for you.

Whilst opinions from your friends and family are important, they shouldn’t be the ultimate deciding factor when choosing a course. Ultimately you need to consider what you really want and whether it aligns with your career goals.

Begin to prepare your application

Once you have decided which course you would like to apply for and you’ve ensured you meet the entry requirements, you will need to begin preparing your application. This includes collecting the correct documentation such as a CV, transcript, personal statement, and reference.

What should you include in a Masters personal statement?

Recruitment and admissions teams receive thousands of applications each year so it is important that your personal statement is to the point and demonstrates what they are looking for in their students.

Danielle gives some insight into what our recruitment team looks for in a personal statement for a Masters degree:

Aim to keep your personal statement to the point by making sure you answer the following questions, addressing the key points our Selection Committee will be looking for:

Why have you selected this course? What are your motivating factors?
How do you see this course benefitting your career plans?
What will you contribute to your cohort?

As well as addressing these key questions, you should also include the following:

Academic achievements

You need to demonstrate how your undergraduate study has prepared you for a postgraduate course. You can do this by highlighting specific achievements, projects and pieces of work as well as mentioning any particular topics that interest you.

Professional achievements

If you completed any professional work experience alongside your studies, it is a good idea to mention them here. Highlight any duties, tasks and responsibilities you had to demonstrate what you gained from this work experience.

Relevant extracurricular activities

Including information about relevant extracurricular activities you are involved in can help to give a more rounded view of you as a person. This could include volunteering opportunities and any meaningful hobbies you have.

Transferable skills

Your transferable skills should be highlighted throughout your personal statement. The types of things you could include are presentation skills, communication skills, analytical thinking and time management. Consider what you can bring to lectures and workshops. For example, if your course involves a lot of group work, use an example where you demonstrate your experience with this.

What should you avoid when writing a Masters personal statement?

Repetition of information.

When submitting both a CV and personal statement it can be easy to fall into the trap of just repeating the same information across both documents. Your personal statement is an opportunity for you to reflect and expand on what you have stated on your CV, rather than repeating the same information.

Not providing enough context

Nowadays, it is widely accepted that life long study comes to be part of our life. Life-long study is a process to transform and develop myself as both profession and knowledge. Moreover, as a child, I had a great interest both in computer and business and therefore I had already decided to make a career both in computer and business. Hence, receiving tertiary education is one of the important milestones in my life. It is because I hope through attending to the university and majoring in the information system to more deeply to understand and study the principle and theories, and thereby prepare and optimize my future career.

In 21st century, almost all companies, governments, originations and even domestics are also computerization. With development of the technology, information system is playing more important role in the enterprises. Many companies use the information system to making the decision (Executive Information System and Management Information System), recording and processing the transaction (Data Processing System) and so forth. Moreover, a comprehensive and superior information system will make the company more competitive, efficiency and profitable, especially in the knowledge-based and globalization economy. As consider the optimum development and future in the computer industry and my interest, therefore, I make me passion to study the information system and enter into this industry.

However, developments of companies in Hong Kong are constrained by many inherited operation problems. These problem including lack of long term strategy and vision and therefore not willing to investment to the information system; neglect important of the information system; lack of management concepts and so forth. These factors are also prohibiting them to utilize the merit of talent and technique of Hong Kong. Therefore, I hope enter into computer industry and utilize my knowledge and skill to make a contribution of development of the computer industry.

I am currently studying the higher diploma and majoring in business studies (accounting and finance steam). During this time, I am taking the business finance, business law, corporation law, finance accounting, Information system, management information system, cost of management accounting, marketing and so forth with outstanding result, I believe these courses will strengthen my foundation in information system and business discipline. Moreover, through a series of group projects and assignments, it not only develops research, communication, leadership, presentation skills, but also leaned how to cooperate with different peoples and handle the conflict with my group members. I believe these experiences are facilitating to adopt the university’s life and study. In addition, outside my study, I also actively attend different activities in order to comprehensive development. In recent, I attended the Business Internship Program which is held by Prudential Assurance Co. Ltd. During this program, besides famous peoples sharing their opinions and experiences, I also cooperate with the different university student to complete the group project which is about poverty elderly. I believe these experiences are facilitating to adopt the university’s life and study.

In my mind, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) is a superior university and encourage research and innovation. Therefore, I believe that it not only will provide professional training, but also provide insight and change my perspectives and views in different areas and fields as well as what education I want. Therefore, I desire to complete my degree course in HKUST.

Management Information Systems (MIS): Definition and How It Works

Management Information System, commonly referred to as MIS is a phrase consisting of three words: management, information and systems. Looking at these three words, it’s easy to define Management Information Systems as systems that provide information to management.

That is the simple definition of MIS that generally sums up what a Management Information System is, and what it should do. However, its role and impact on the smooth operation of a company can never be overemphasized. That is the reason why every successful company makes use of these systems in one way or another.

The reason why Management Information Systems are very important in the day to day operation of companies is because these systems work with people, organizations, technology and relationships among the people and organizations affecting the company.

Management Information Systems (MIS): Definition and How It Works

This explains why MIS degrees are in high demand globally since the graduates have practical knowledge that will help them develop more efficient solutions thanks to their systems perspective of business processes developed in their training in Management Information Systems.

In the decade between 2014 and 2024, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that MIS professionals, and specifically database administrators, should expect the highest job growth when compared to all the other occupations.

Owing to the strong link between Management Information Systems and technology, the history of these systems goes hand in hand with the history of computing technology.

With that said, we will split the evolution of MIS into five eras. Let’s take a closer look at what changes were effected in each of these eras.

First Era: Computing on Mainframe and Minicomputers

This was the era before 1965 when computing was done on large mainframe computers located in large special rooms designed specifically for the computers. This included special temperature control to ensure that the machines always operated in optimum conditions.

These computers were operated by teams of technicians and hence the cost of operating them was quite high. As a result, most of the computing was done on a time-sharing basis to meet the high costs of owning and operating these mainframes. The dominant supplier of hardware and software in this era was IBM .

With time, technology advanced and towards the end of this era, minicomputers were introduced. The minicomputers were significantly smaller and cheaper, hence large companies could afford to own these and do their computing in-house. However, the minicomputers were still very expensive when compared to today’s standards.

Second Era: Personal Computers

This era began in 1965 and was mainly as a result of the introduction of the microprocessor. This meant that companies could now afford cheaper personal computers, which provided access to computing power that would have cost exorbitant amounts of money just one decade before.

By mid 1980s, personal computers were becoming much more affordable hence they were made available to the mass markets. The predominant ones at this time were the Apple I and Apple II, and the IBM personal computer, commonly referred to as PC. The PC was friendlier to businesses, which explains why it rose to popularity in those early days.

During this era, Management Information Systems started making way into businesses thanks to the development of a spreadsheet application known as VisiCalc (short for “visible calculator”). This application was released originally for the Apple II, but a PC version was also made for the IBM PC when it was produced.

This application is considered by many the factor that turned the microcomputer from an expensive gadget for scientists and enthusiasts to an all-important business tool thus paving way for the modern Management Information Systems. Following the success of the VisiCalc, more powerful spreadsheet applications like the Lotus 1-2-3 and Microsoft’s Multiplan and later Excel.

Third Era: Client/Server Networks

With the widening use of computing in business and advances in technology, more needs came from the business community to ensure a more efficient interaction with information. Since companies were able to computing thanks to reduced costs of computers, better ways had to be sought for making the most out of this computing power.

One of the most prominent needs that arose was the need for employees within organizations to share computer information with other employees. The solution was provided by client/server networks that went a long way in enhancing the management information systems we have today.

One big step in this era was the development of intranets which were static websites that gave employees access to information that was stored in a central location. This made it possible to work faster and more efficiently because more people could access information on a server as long as their computers were on a common network.

Fourth Era: Enterprise Computing

The fourth era was an improvement of the third era that saw to it that different departments in companies had even better access to information. The main improvement was the introduction of high speed enterprise networks that enabled faster access to information.

This provided a better and more complete management structure since decision making was easier thanks to the better access of information from different parts of the company. Essentially, the applications used by departments in the company were consolidated and woven together into a single platform that was accessible from the company network.

High-speed networks were also added into the mix to increase the efficiency of the platform. This meant that business operations such as finance, accounting, sales, marketing, inventory and even human resource management could be harmonized to ensure cooperation and efficiency throughout the entire company.

Although the applications used by different departments differed and measures of access control were introduced to limit access to sensitive company information, this era gave top management officials a complete view of the current standing of the entire business.

Fifth Era: Cloud Computing

This is the current era that employs the latest networking technology to further enhance information processing and access by business officials and management executives. The added element in this era is the fact that the networking technology adds a level of mobility to the systems.

This means that irrespective of your location, the configuration that you are using or the hardware that’s available, you will still be able to use business applications and access data stored in company servers. With the improvement of cellphone networks to provide high speed mobile data access and the increase in popularity of Wi-Fi networks, managers have ready access to the Management Information System around the clock hence better decisions can be made faster.

This era frees management from the chains of office-bound computers with local network access. With the rise in popularity of mobile devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablet computers, great levels of mobility are achieved while still improving on efficiency.

This also calls for a change in management style since the workers will be generally more informed due to the ability to produce and consume more information about the business, giving rise to what’s now known as the knowledge worker . Knowledge workers are more empowered and hence more productive naturally.

This means that the command-and-control method of management will no longer be the most effective management style for this worker. As a result, employee autonomy is gradually becoming more and more inevitable.

TYPES OF INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Executive Information Systems. Also known as Executive Support System, this is a tool used for reporting enterprise-wide data to top executives. These systems provide quick and easy to use reports that are presented in graphical displays that are easy to compare. They can be taken as specialized decision support systems because they provide information necessary to help improve the quality of decisions. Owing to the high expectations from such a system, these systems need to be highly individualized hence they are usually custom made for specific clients. They are also customizable to fit the specific needs of the clients.
Management Information Systems. These systems make use of information technology to help managers ensure a smooth and efficient running of the organization. Information collected by these systems is structured so that the managers can easily evaluate the company’s current performance vis-à-vis previous outputs. Some of the common types of Management Information Systems include process control systems, human resource management systems, sales and marketing systems, inventory control systems, office automation systems, enterprise resource planning systems, accounting and finance systems and management reporting systems.

COMPONENTS OF MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS

To effectively deliver the information needed to decision makers, Management Information Systems need to have the necessary components to collect, process, store and retrieve the information whenever it is needed.

To achieve this, these systems use the following four components:

Information System. This is a combination of software, hardware, personnel and infrastructure. This component helps in the collection of data that is stored in the MIS. The hardware includes computers, scanners, printers and network devices. The software elements include the company’s enterprise software and any other software that is used in the running of the company’s network. This component makes it possible for employees to interact with the system and thus information can be collected
Database Management System. This component is primarily made up of computer programs that help in the storage and retrieval of data. Of course, it also includes the actual physical databases where the information is stored after it has been captured. There are several different database management systems that can be used in Management Information Systems. The suitability of the systems will depend on the amount of data that will need to be processed and stored in the system. There are small database management systems that can comfortably work on personal computers and there are huge ones that will need larger and more complex machines like mainframe computers. What is management information systems (MIS)?

Management information systems (MIS) is a department within an enterprise responsible for controlling the hardware and software systems that the organization uses to make business-critical decisions. In addition to describing a department within a company, the term "MIS" can also refer to a type of computer software that is used to store, organize and analyze information.

Today, the term MIS is used broadly in a variety of contexts. These include but are not limited to the following:

Decision support system (DSS) software.
Resource and people management applications.
Project management .
Database retrieval applications.

What is MIS in a software context?

MIS software is used to track sales, inventory, equipment and related business information.

In the past, these applications ran on mainframe computers. However, as computing systems evolved, organizations began to run MIS software on client-server systems. Today, MIS applications are commonly run in the cloud, including hybrid cloud environments.

Types of MIS software

The following are the four main types of MIS software:

DSS. A DSS analyzes business data to assist managers with decision making. For example, a DSS could project revenue figures based on new product sales assumptions.
Transaction processing system (TPS). A TPS processes the routine transactions associated with a business. Examples include payroll processing, order processing for an e-commerce business and invoicing.
Management support system (MSS). An MSS stores and organizes data, enabling end users to generate reports and analyze data to address business needs and inform planning. A data warehouse is an example of a MSS.
Expert systems. An expert system provides managers with insights and advice based on artificial intelligence ( AI ). In an expert system, the AI is trained to simulate the knowledge of a human expert in a particular field.

The early history of MIS departments

The MIS department was originally an organization's entire information technology ( IT ) department. From the 1960s through the early 1980s, practitioners and business schools generally referred to MIS, rather than IT.

In these early days, enterprise computing's main role was to help the CEO and CFO with information systems ( IS ) management for tasks that were key to running the business, such as order entry, accounting and budgeting. No enterprise applications yet existed; instead, programmers painstakingly wrote code to carry out these functions, usually on a mainframe.

These systems were business critical, meaning the business would fail if it had to go back to manual methods. Thus, if the MIS department was unsuccessful, the business was in danger. The CFO typically oversaw the MIS department to ensure that developers and administrators delivered what accounting needed.

Shifts in roles and terminology: From MIS to IS to IT

In the 1980s, with the advent of personal computers that could run spreadsheets , the scope of enterprise computing responsibilities began to change. Adoption of personal spreadsheets took business-critical processes out of the domain of upper management.

As a result, MIS departments needed to service a wider range of users and to deploy both external and internal software programs. To reflect this new set of internal customers, organizations began to change the name of the MIS department to IS. Through this shift, the MIS team became only one -- yet still vital -- part of the overall IS department.

In the 1990s, the rise of the enterprise application brought about a new set of IS tasks. Companies succeeded by providing better services than their competitors to the consumer via a mix of enterprise and homegrown applications.

These applications also performed a wider range of functions than the MIS department had previously handled -- for example, enterprise resource planning , supply chain management and sales force automation . Many of these tasks were not solely the property of the IS department. Outside vendors, outsourcers and line-of-business computing departments now all claimed a share of enterprise computing.

In enterprise architecture, the IS department thus became more of a strategic director of the organization's software and underlying hardware technologies and less of a controlling central entity. Again, organizations began to change the department's name to reflect its new role: IS departments came to be known as IT, and the original MIS department became a smaller part of the larger whole.

MIS departments vs. IT management

Although the boundaries between MIS and IT management have become fuzzy over the years, an MIS team still typically covers systems that are critical to the company's ability to survive , including accounting and order entry. In many businesses, MIS teams also handle legacy software and hardware.

Legacy systems might have been coded by programmers who have long since retired, in some cases leaving no documentation for the systems. This is equally a role of IT management and business coordination: The enterprise should upgrade or modernize legacy systems very carefully and with high appreciation of the risks involved.

Therefore, the importance of MIS -- and the people who support it and know its quirks -- remains high, even if it is now a little-discussed part of enterprise IT. Upper management should understand the importance of MIS in the context of enterprise revenue.

The business value of MIS departments and applications

Both MIS software and MIS departments can help companies gain a competitive advantage, as both help organizations increase productivity by enabling workers to spend more time on value-generating tasks.

The data managed by MIS software tools can help managers make better decisions related to sales, manufacturing, resource allocation and more. Similarly, the MIS department plays an important role in providing support services within an organization, such as the following:

Governance. Governance involves systems and controls over employees' use of computing systems. The MIS department defines, manages and enforces the rules covering how and whether employees can access the company's technologies and network infrastructure. The MIS department is responsible for IT security and enforcing codes of conduct related to computer systems use.
Infrastructure. An organization's IT infrastructure is comprised of the technology systems that support the business' day-to-day functioning -- for example, phones, desktop and laptop computers, servers, application software and cloud computing. The MIS department provides internal help desk and support services, assisting employees and troubleshooting issues related to the infrastructure.
Data management. Data management involves provisioning and managing systems that enable employees to access and update critical business data. The MIS department is responsible for ensuring the availability and security of the organization's data management systems.

MIS careers

The MIS job description is likely to include duties in both finance and IT administration. The MIS career entails extensive planning and analysis for large-scale and business-critical projects, which often requires experience or education in finance and economics.

Common MIS roles and responsibilities include network and IT systems management , business systems analysis, data integration, and compliance and audit preparation. A strong MIS candidate should also have soft skills such as being a capable communicator who can liaise with the business units that rely on the MIS department.

A career in MIS could entail evaluating business applications and selecting those that will help the enterprise achieve its goals in sales, marketing or another area. In turn, the MIS department then deploys and manages these applications throughout their lifecycle.

MIS jobs often require a degree in IS management , computer science or a related field. Candidates should be able to manage IT and software vendors and troubleshoot and optimize computer systems and applications. In addition, they should be able to track metrics related to how effectively an application supports business objectives.

I want to return to studying so that I can better myself for the future and gain qualifications for some of the skills that I already possess. I want to start studying computers and information systems, I already have extensive knowledge and experience in this subject and I regret not going straight back in to education when I left school so I am doing it now.

I have over 12 years experience with computers and I am always doing something with them whether it's day to day tasks such as word processing or more complex subjects such as web design and administrating Linux web servers and making sure they are secure. I currently administrate two Linux web servers as a hobby for a couple of web sites that I run. One of the sites has grown so rapidly over the last two years it has required its own dedicated server to run as shared web hosting would not suffice.

With the two web servers that I currently administrate I have configured them from the ground up. I have configured DNS to route the server IP address to my chosen domain name, FTP server, MYSQL Database Server and Apache for serving web pages. I have also automated the process of making daily backups of the data held on the server. I am also constantly monitoring these servers to make sure they are running efficiently and also keeping up to date with security issues and making sure my servers are not vulnerable to current exploits etc.

As you can probably determine from what I have explained above I would like to work towards a career in IT. I would love to go down the Server Admin Route or get into computer security as they are the main areas which interest me the most, although i would like to consider myself open to all areas of IT as it is something which i enjoy to do at home on a regular basis.
