The Guide to Frontier Airlines Seats
Many or all of the products on this page are from partners who compensate us when you click to or take an action on their website, but this does not influence our evaluations or ratings. Our opinions are our own.
Frontier will usually charge you to select a seat.
You can always skip selection for free and get one assigned at the gate.
“Stretch seating” offers more legroom, but costs more.
Frontier Airlines offers ultra-low-cost fares with only the flight included. If you want to choose your own seat, check a bag or bring a carry-on, you'll have to pay. If you'd like the option to select your own seat — even a middle seat in the back of the aircraft — you’ll need to pay extra (either as an à la carte upgrade or part of a fare bundle).
Also, the complimentary snacks and soft drinks that other airlines hand out come with a charge on Frontier Airlines.
This pricing model is great if you’re a budget traveler who wants to pay only for the things important to you — things like legroom.
If you like the idea of à la carte savings, but consider legroom a priority when you fly, you should know about how Frontier Airlines’ seating system works.

How do Frontier’s seat assignment fees work?
When you go to book a basic fare on Frontier, you’ll have the option of picking a seat for a fee.
The seat selection screen looks like this — the first few rows are sold at a premium price relative to the rows in the back:
You can choose one of these seats for the price listed. But you don’t have to. Just scroll to the bottom of the page, and click the “Continue” button.
On the next page, you’ll get another prompt from Frontier asking you to confirm that you don’t want to select a seat. At that point you’ll choose the “No, thanks, I’ll take whatever” option.
Note that if you choose to book an economy, premium, or business fare bundle — which start at $30, $50 and $100, respectively — seat selection will be included for no extra fee (beyond what you pay for the bundle)

What if I don’t pay for seat selection?
Not selecting a seat doesn't mean you won’t get one, it just means that Frontier will assign one to you at check-in or at the gate. This means you’re much more likely to get put in a middle seat, near the back.
So when deciding whether to pay for seat selection, ask yourself: Is the cost of selecting a seat worth it to avoid sitting in the middle? If not, you can skip it and save some cash.
Families who want to sit together might consider paying for seat selection to avoid getting split up, though gate agents will often work to keep families together.

What is Frontier stretch seating?
Most seats on Frontier Airlines flights have between 28 and 31 inches of pitch, which is the distance from the back of your seat to the back of the seat in front of you. That’s slightly below the average pitch of 30 to 31 inches found on other airlines.
Frontier Airlines stretch seating comes with an extra five to seven inches of pitch. These seats also recline, unlike the other seats, and they offer bigger tray tables.
Frontier typically offers five or six rows of stretch seating on its aircraft, including the exit rows.
How much does Frontier Airlines stretch seating cost?
The cost of Frontier Airlines stretch seating depends on a couple of different factors, most notably how long the flight is and when you book.
On some flights, stretch seating starts at $16 for each leg. On longer flights that you book later, this perk can cost well over $56. You'll have to check your individual flights for specific pricing as it varies by route and length.
If you have a connecting flight, you’ll need to pay for stretch seating for each leg of your flight.
If you want to pick any seat while flying on Frontier, you’re going to pay something (either à la carte or as part of a fare bundle), so take that into account when deciding if the stretch seating option is worth it for you.

What about Frontier Airlines first class?
Since Frontier is a low-cost carrier, it doesn’t offer a first class option. If you’re looking for something better than a regular seat, you’ll want to purchase stretch seating when booking your flight.
You’ll get perks like more legroom, extra recline and early boarding.
How to get Frontier seat assignments for free
There are a couple of ways that you can get Frontier Airlines stretch seating for free.
1. Earn elite status
Frontier Elite 20K status lets you pick a seat for free and you can pick stretch seating for free when you check in. If you have Elite 50K or Elite 100K status, you can pick stretch seating for free when you buy the tickets and you get family seating, which allows up to eight passengers on the same reservation to pick any seat, including stretch seating, at the time of purchase.
2. Use credit card statement credits to offset Frontier seat fees
Another way you can get Frontier Airlines stretch seating for (sort of) free is to use airline incidental credits from an American Express card. These cards pay you back (in the form of a statement credit) when you purchase certain airline incidentals, including seat selection, up to a certain limit every year. It is important to note that the charge must be classified as seat selection and not an upgrade to get the credit. Terms apply.
You have to select your preferred airline at the beginning of the year, or when you sign up, so if you have one of these cards and want to use the credit for Frontier Airlines perks, be sure to select it as your preferred airline.
Cards that offer these credits for airline fees include:
The Platinum Card® from American Express – $200 annual credit.
The Business Platinum Card® from American Express – $200 annual credit.
Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card – $250 annual credit.
Terms apply. Enrollment required.
The fare you purchase will determine if your seat (and what type of seat) is included. A basic fare does not include complimentary seat assignments. This means you have two options: Pay for a seat or skip seat selection. By skipping seat selection, you might get stuck in a middle seat or separated from your party — but it’s free. Frontier also offers “stretch seating” with extra legroom for an extra charge. Economy fares include a standard seat, premium fares include a premium seat and business fares include an UpFront Plus seat.
You can select your seat on Frontier, but it will cost you. You always have the option to skip Frontier Airlines seat selection for free.
Generally, you should only pay for a seat on Frontier if you want to avoid the middle seat, or if you’re traveling with family and don’t want to get separated. Frontier will make selecting (and paying for) a seat appear like the default option, but remember: You can always opt out.
The cost of selecting a seat varies by route and seat type, from $17 to $55 each way for standard economy seats. In our analysis , we found that Frontier charges an average of $36 for seat selection on a roundtrip fare.
Small bags and personal belongings are allowed for free on Frontier, but you will get charged a fee for overhead carry-ons, such as roller bags and larger backpacks. Personal items must meet the following measurements: 8 inches deep by 18 inches wide by 14 inches high.
No, Frontier does not offer a first class option. However, if you purchase stretch seating on Frontier, you’ll receive some perks like more legroom, extra recline, early boarding, and more.

Is paying for seats worth it on Frontier Airlines?
Whether paying for seats on Frontier is worth it depends on your situation. If you despise the middle seat or are traveling with a family, it might be worth shelling out the seat assignment fee for some peace of mind. And if you need extra legroom, Frontier’s stretch seating might be worth it.
That said, when in doubt, you can probably skip the seat assignment fee altogether if you're booking a basic fare. The whole point of flying Frontier is that it’s cheap, and if you pay for seats both ways, you’re eroding the potential savings compared with flying on another airline.

Airline Family Seating Dashboard
A parent who purchases airline tickets for a family should receive a guarantee from the airline that it will seat the parent and child together without fees or a last-minute scramble at the gate or having to ask other passengers to give up their seat to allow the parent and child to sit together. On February 1, 2023, Secretary Buttigieg announced the Department's plan to launch a dashboard that displays which airlines guarantee family seating. Since then, some airlines have stepped up to guarantee adjacent seats for young children traveling with an accompanying adult at no additional cost. While this represents significant progress, USDOT is not stopping here. Secretary Buttigieg recently submitted to Congress a legislative proposal to require that airlines provide fee-free family seating .
Commitment for Fee-Free Family Seating
Please click this link for an alternative text version of the dashboard .
Limited Conditions
* When using an airline that assigns seats, the airline can condition its guarantee on each of the following:
- Child and accompanying adult are on the same reservation;
- Adjacent seats are available at the time of booking in the selected class of service;
- Aircraft is not substituted for smaller aircraft;
- Adult either chooses seats for the entire reservation or skips seats for the entire reservation, and does not make changes to seat assignments once assigned to them; and
- It is physically possible based on seat layout to seat the number of young children traveling next to the accompanying adult(s).
If the conditions are satisfied, airlines that assign seats and guarantee fee-free family seating will provide adjacent seat assignments to the adult traveling with a child age 13 or under no later than on the day before the flight.
* When using an airline with an open seating policy, the airline can condition its guarantee on the following:
- Child and accompanying adult are on same reservation;
- Accompanying adult notifies gate agent of need for adjacent seats prior to start of boarding; and
DOT is not satisfied with airline statements that they will "make efforts" to seat families traveling with children together at no additional cost. The Department urges all airlines to guarantee family seating. DOT will update the dashboard above to provide air travelers clear information about the airlines that commit to providing adjacent seats for a young child and an accompanying parent and those that do not.
The dashboard will serve as a bridge to help families while the Department advances a rulemaking to ensure airlines seat young children adjacent to a parent or other accompanying adult. In addition, the President has called upon Congress to fast track the ban on family seating fees so that DOT can take action to stop those practices more quickly than through a rulemaking.
Tips for Families
The Department provides families practical tips that families may use before, during, and after air travel and links to airline websites with information applicable to family seating .
If you are dissatisfied with an experience related to family seating, you can file a complaint with the airline or DOT. Click here to file a complaint with the DOT.

Here’s how an airline that charges for all seat assignments will keep families seated together
On the heels of United Airlines' recent announcement about family seating , ultra-low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines said it is now also seating children with a parent at no additional charge. This makes the carrier the latest airline to enact a travel policy that allows families to sit together.
The Denver-based carrier said on Tuesday that it allows children under the age of 14 to be seated automatically with at least one parent or guardian at no additional charge.
Typically, Frontier charges a fee for all seat assignments . However, under this new measure, the airline said it would assign seats based on family members' ages before the check-in window opens.
"We recognize the importance of seating children next to an adult with whom they are traveling," said Daniel Shurz, senior vice president, commercial, of Frontier Airlines.
Shurz said Frontier had been working on this policy and enhancing its systems since October to better ensure that families can sit together on flights, adding that the "system is working well, and we are receiving positive feedback."
Additionally, Frontier said families with Discount Den membership can use its Kids Fly Free promotions for select flights if they have children who are under 14 years old.
Frontier follows in the footsteps of United Airlines in announcing policies that make it easier for families to be seated together. United said Monday that it would let families with children under the age of 12 sit together for free in its economy cabins.
Breeze Airways has said that it has always allowed families to sit together for free on its flights.
Southwest Airlines — which is notorious for its open seating policy — seems to have been quietly experimenting with its family travel policy. It allows families with children under the age of 13 to be a part of a family boarding process to make sure that families have a better chance at choosing seats that are next to each other.
However, the official Southwest policy is still that families with children under the age of 6 board between its A and B boarding groups.
The recent focus on family seating comes after President Joe Biden admonished airlines for charging additional fees to allow children to sit with their families, touting that his administration will enact more consumer protections.
The Department of Transportation's existing policy already encourages airlines to keep families seated together to the extent possible without charging extra fees to seat children under the age of 13 with a parent or guardian.
"Baggage fees are bad enough — they can't just treat your child like a piece of luggage," Biden said in his State of the Union address Feb. 7.

If you're a frequent Frontier Airlines flier, the FRONTIER Airlines World Mastercard® could be a good choice. It offers generous rewards on Frontier purchases, a substantial sign-up bonus and travel perks like free checked bags, priority boarding and an annual flight voucher.
However, the card does come with a $99 annual fee after the first year, and your miles will expire if you don't use your card for six months. Plus, your redemption options are limited to Frontier flights, which might not appeal to those seeking more flexibility. This card could work for dedicated Frontier fans but less so if you prefer broader redemption options.
Moneygeek.com credit ranges are a variation of FICO® Score 8, one of many types of credit scores lenders may use when considering your credit card application.
The FRONTIER Airlines World is an excellent card for regular Frontier flyers who want to maximize rewards on their travel expenses. It also lets you earn a $100 flight voucher, which can offset its $99 annual fee.
- High rewards on Frontier purchases
- Generous intro offer
- No foreign transaction fees
- Priority boarding and fee waivers
- $100 flight voucher annually
- Comes with an annual fee
- Limited airline scope
- Rewards are inflexible

FRONTIER Airlines World Card Detailed Review
Frontier Airlines is a low-cost U.S. carrier known for its budget-friendly fares, serving destinations across North America and the Caribbean. The FRONTIER Airlines World (issued by Barclays ) is its sole, co-branded credit card, and it’s tailored for regular Frontier flyers. The card offers 5X miles on eligible purchases at flyfrontier.com, 3X miles on dining and 1X miles on everything else.
Cardholders enjoy additional perks, including two free checked bags and priority boarding, which can help keep travel costs down. You can also earn a $100 flight voucher on your account anniversary by spending at least $2,500 the previous year. While this voucher is limited to flights booked online and can’t be used for seat upgrades, it’s a valuable perk that can offset the card’s $99 annual fee.
If you’re not sure you’ll be able to take advantage of the yearly flight voucher, a more flexible airline card might offer better value. The miles you earn are best redeemed with Frontier Airlines, which can be a limitation due to Frontier’s relatively small network. Plus, your miles will expire if there's no card activity for six months.
FRONTIER Miles Earning and Redemption
All your purchases with the FRONTIER Airlines World Card earn Frontier Miles. Here are the miles you earn for various spending categories:
- 5X Frontier Miles on eligible purchases at flyfrontier.com
- 3X Frontier Miles on eligible restaurant purchases
- 1X Frontier Miles on all other purchases
The best value for redeeming your miles is in award tickets, starting at 10,000 miles for a one-way domestic flight. Redeeming for Frontier flights typically gives you a value of 1 cent per mile . While you can also redeem miles for rental cars and gift cards, these options generally offer less value. Remember that your miles will expire if there’s no account activity for six months.
Does FRONTIER Airlines World Earn Toward Elite Status?
The FRONTIER Airlines World Card helps you earn toward Frontier’s Elite Status. New cardholders receive instant Gold Status after making their first purchase within 90 days of account opening. To maintain Gold Status for 12 months, you need to spend $3,000 within those 90 days.
Elite status is determined by the number of miles earned in a calendar year and, once achieved, is valid for the remainder of that year and the following year. Frontier's four elite tiers — Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond — offer benefits like free checked and carry-on bags, priority boarding, access to stretch seating, waived fees, priority customer care and bonus miles.
Benefits and Perks
The FRONTIER Airlines World Card offers several valuable benefits for frequent Frontier flyers. Here’s a closer look at what you can expect:
Generous Introductory Offer : Spend $1,000 on purchases within the first 90 days of opening your account, and you’ll earn 50,000 miles. This substantial bonus can significantly boost your miles balance, valued at $500 when redeemed for flights. That’s effectively a 50% return on your spending, which is quite competitive compared to other cards.
$100 Flight Voucher : Each year, by spending $2,500 or more in net purchases, you can earn a $100 Frontier Airlines flight voucher. This can help offset the card’s $99 annual fee. However, the voucher can only be used for Frontier airfare booked on their website and doesn’t cover extras like seat assignments or reservation changes. The remaining balance is forfeited if your ticket costs less than $100. Also, the voucher expires in six months, so you’ll need to plan your travel ahead of time.
Travel Benefits : Starting in August 2024, you can enjoy two free checked bags when you use your card to purchase your ticket on Frontier’s website or app — a valuable perk, considering checked bags usually start at $48 each. You’ll also receive priority boarding, allowing you to board earlier and secure overhead bin space. Additionally, the card offers no foreign transaction fees and waives redemption fees.
Drawbacks and Considerations
Consider the factors below first before you decide on the FRONTIER Airlines World Card:
Annual Fee : After the first year, this card comes with a $99 annual fee. While you can offset this cost by earning the flight voucher, keep in mind that the voucher has some limitations and may even expire. Additionally, using the voucher requires you to fly Frontier at least once a year. If you're unsure about flying Frontier annually, you might want to consider a card with a broader network, like the United Explorer Card.
Inflexible Rewards : The miles you earn with this card can only be redeemed on Frontier Airlines, limiting your options. If you’re looking to book flights to international destinations like Tokyo, this card won’t be much help. Instead, consider cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, which allows you to transfer points to multiple airline and hotel partners.
Limited Bonus Categories : This card offers bonus miles only on Frontier flights and dining. For all other purchases, you earn just 1X miles. Many airline cards at this price point offer at least three bonus categories, making accumulating miles through everyday spending easier.
How FRONTIER Airlines World Compares
To help you assess how the FRONTIER Airlines World performs, we compare it with similar airline cards below:
Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card vs. FRONTIER Airlines World
The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card offers a higher sign-up bonus of 60,000 points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening, and receive up to $300 in statement credits on Chase Travel purchases within your first year. And more versatile rewards, including 5X points on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠, 3X points on dining and 2X on all other travel purchases. Additionally, you can transfer your Chase points to several airline and hotel loyalty programs, including JetBlue, Southwest and United. With an almost similar annual fee of $95, you’re getting a more flexible card with the Chase Sapphire Preferred.
United℠ Explorer Card vs. FRONTIER Airlines World
The United℠ Explorer Card offers 2X miles on United flights, which is lower than the 5X miles you get from the FRONTIER Airlines World. However, the United card also gives you 2X miles on dining and hotel stays. In addition to free checked bags, it comes with a $100 credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, travel insurance and two complimentary lounge visits per year. Since United is a major carrier, you won’t face the same restrictions as you would if you were flying with Frontier. The United Explorer Card is worth considering if you're looking for a versatile airline card and aren't committed to flying Frontier.
Cards to Pair With the FRONTIER Airlines World
Since the FRONTIER Airlines World Card only earns high rewards on flights and dining, it can be a good idea to pair it with other cash back cards. We found the best pick to maximize your earnings:
Pair With the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express
The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express offers 3% cash back at U.S. supermarkets, U.S. online retail and U.S. gas stations on up to $6,000 per year in purchases, then 1%. Cash back is received in the form of Reward Dollars that can be redeemed as a statement credit or at Amazon.com checkout. These everyday spending categories aren't covered by the FRONTIER Airlines World, making these two cards a great pairing. This combination lets you maximize rewards across different spending areas, enhancing your overall earnings. Plus, since the Blue Cash Everyday Card has no annual fee, you can use it without any additional cost.
Is the FRONTIER Airlines World Worth Getting?
If you’re regularly flying with Frontier Airlines, it’s worthwhile to consider the FRONTIER Airlines World. You’ll earn high miles on flights and receive relevant perks like free checked bags. You’d also gain access to Frontier’s elite status, which unlocks more perks and bonus miles. However, if you don’t travel often enough to benefit from the yearly flight voucher, a travel card with flexible rewards may better fit your needs.
