What is a Hookah Lounge Business Plan?

A business plan provides a snapshot of your hookah bar or lounge as it stands today, and lays out your growth plan for the next five years. It explains your business goals and your strategy for reaching them. It also includes market research to support your plans.

Why You Need a Business Plan for a Hookah Lounge

If you’re looking to start a hookah bar or lounge, or grow your existing business, you need a business plan. A business plan will help you raise funding, if needed, and plan out the growth of your lounge in order to improve your chances of success. Your plan is a living document that should be updated annually as your company grows and changes.

Sources of Funding for Hookah Businesses

With regards to funding, the main sources of funding for a hookah lounge are personal savings, credit cards, bank loans and angel investors. With regards to bank loans, banks will want to review your business plan and gain confidence that you will be able to repay your loan and interest. To acquire this confidence, the lender will not only want to confirm that your financials are reasonable, but they will also want to see a professional plan. Such a plan will give them the confidence that you can successfully and professionally operate a business. Personal savings and bank loans are the most common funding paths for hookah lounges.

How to write a business plan for a hookah lounge or bar.

If you want to start a hookah lounge or expand your current one, you need a business plan. Below we detail each of the key components to writing a great [sector] business plan:

Executive Summary

Your executive summary provides an introduction to your business plan, but it is normally the last section you write because it provides a summary of each key section of your plan.

The goal of your Executive Summary is to quickly engage the reader. Explain to them the type of business you are operating and its status. For example, are you a startup, do you have a hookah bar or lounge that you would like to grow, or are you operating a chain of hookah bars or lounges?

Next, provide an overview of each of the subsequent sections of your plan. For example, give a brief overview of the hookah lounge industry. Discuss the type of business you are operating. Detail your direct competitors. Give an overview of your target customers. Provide a snapshot of your marketing plan. Identify the key members of your team. And offer an overview of your financial plan.

Company Analysis

In your company analysis, you will detail the type of hookah lounge you are operating.

For example, you might operate one of the following types of hookah businesses:

  • Hookah Lounge : this type of business will have a lounge type atmosphere with comfortable couches and chairs for guests to sit in while smoking hookah. The social aspect of hookah is foremost in this type of business, and food, drink, or other merchandise may be available, but is not a major focus.
  • Hookah Bar: this type of business has a bar atmosphere and typically also offers a menu of drinks and alcoholic beverages.
  • Hookah Cafe: this type of business typically has a coffee shop atmosphere and serves coffee and tea, as well as pastries and other food. Some hookah cafes specialize in a particular cuisine, such as Middle Eastern food.

In addition to explaining the type of business you will operate, the Company Analysis section of your business plan needs to provide background on the business.

Include answers to question such as:

  • When and why did you start the business?
  • What milestones have you achieved to date? Milestones could include the number of customers served, number of positive reviews, etc.
  • Your legal structure. Are you incorporated as an S-Corp? An LLC? A sole proprietorship? Explain your legal structure here.

Industry Analysis

In your industry analysis, you need to provide an overview of the hookah industry.

While this may seem unnecessary, it serves multiple purposes.

First, researching the hookah industry educates you. It helps you understand the market in which you are operating.

Secondly, market research can improve your strategy, particularly if your research identifies market trends.

The third reason for market research is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section of your hookah business plan:

  • How big is the hookah industry (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential market for your hookah bar or lounge? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section of your hookah business plan must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

The following are examples of customer segments that may be hookah smokers: college students, Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of hookah business you operate. Clearly, college students would respond to different marketing promotions than an affluent Baby Boomer, for example.

Try to break out your target customers in terms of their demographic and psychographic profiles. With regards to demographics, include a discussion of the ages, genders, locations and income levels of the customers you seek to serve. Because most hookah businesses primarily serve customers living in their same city or town, such demographic information is easy to find on government websites.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can understand and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other hookah lounge businesses.

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t direct competitors. This includes convenience stores, tobacco shops, cigar shops, and vape shops.

With regards to direct competition, you want to describe the other hookah lounge businesses with which you compete. Most likely, your direct competitors will be hookah lounges located very close to your location.

For each such competitor, provide an overview of their businesses and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as:

  • What types of customers do they serve?
  • What types of hookah flavors do they specialize in?
  • Do they serve food and beverages?
  • What is their pricing (premium, low, etc.)?
  • What are they good at?
  • What are their weaknesses?

With regards to the last two questions, think about your answers from the customers’ perspective. And don’t be afraid to ask your competitors’ customers what they like most and least about them.

The final part of your competitive analysis section is to document your areas of competitive advantage. For example:

  • Will you provide a wider variety of hookah flavors?
  • Will your lounge have a trendier vibe, or a more upscale atmosphere?
  • Will you provide better customer service?
  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a hookah lounge business plan, your marketing plan should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of hookah lounge company that you documented in your Company Analysis. Then, detail the specific products you will be offering. For example, in addition to hookah, will your lounge serve alcohol, or offer oxygen, or will you sell hookah products for off-premise use?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your marketing plan, you are presenting the services you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the location of your hookah lounge company. Document your location and mention how the location will impact your success. For example, is your hookah lounge located near a college campus, or in an entertainment district? Will you also sell hookah products and accessories online? In this section, document each method by which you will sell your products..

Promotions : The final part of your hookah lounge marketing plan is the promotions section. Here you will document how you will drive customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Advertising in local papers and magazines
  • Reaching out to local websites
  • Signs and billboards
  • Social media marketing
  • Local radio advertising

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your hookah lounge business, including marketing your business, ordering and tracking inventory, serving customers, and preparing for upcoming customers.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to seat your 1,000 th customer, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to open a hookah lounge in a new location.

Management Team

To demonstrate your hookah lounge business’ ability to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company.

Ideally you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing hookah lounge businesses. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act like mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in food service or bar management, or successfully running small businesses.

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statements.

Income Statement : an income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenues and then subtracts your hookah lounge costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will your lounge be at capacity during evenings and weekends? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets : Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your hookah lounge business, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a bank writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement : Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and make sure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt.

In developing your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a hookah lounge business:

  • Location build-out including design fees, construction, etc.
  • Cost of equipment and supplies
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Taxes and permits
  • Legal expenses

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your lounge location lease or sample menus for all the products you will serve (hookah, food, beverage, etc.).

Putting together a business plan for your hookah lounge is a worthwhile endeavor. If you follow the template above, by the time you are done, you will truly be an expert. You will really understand the hookah industry, your competition, and your customers. You will have developed a marketing plan and will really understand what it takes to launch and grow a successful hookah lounge business.

hookah lounge Trends and Challenges

Trends in the hookah lounge industry include:

  • Mint-flavored hookah tobaccos are growing in popularity, and fruit flavors are another favorite.
  • Hookah is so trendy that companies have started making hookah merchandise, such as T-shirts with hookah-related phrases, which present a revenue opportunity for hookah lounges.

Challenges in the hookah lounge industry include:

  • Many areas of the country are passing laws to limit what hookah lounges can offer.
  • Hookah lounges are receiving a lot of negative press due to the health hazards of smoking hookah.

How much does it cost to start a hookah lounge business?

Startup costs for a hookah lounge range from $23,000 to $48,000. Costs include the space rental, space preparation, and hookah equipment and supplies. They also include a liquor license and liquor inventory.

You’ll need a handful of items to successfully launch your hookah lounge business, including:

  • Tables and chairs
  • Tobacco and flavors

How much can you earn from a hookah lounge business?

In your first year or two, you might serve 20 hookahs a day and serve $15 in alcoholic beverages to 10 people, bringing in $200,000 in annual revenue. This would mean $60,000 in profit, assuming that 30% margin. As your hookah lounge gains popularity, you might serve 50 hookahs a day and beverages to 25 people. With annual revenue of $502,000, you’d make a healthy profit of $150,000.

Step 2: hone your idea.

Now that you know what’s involved in starting a hookah lounge, it’s a good idea to hone your concept in preparation to enter a competitive market.

Market research will give you the upper hand, even if you’re already positive that you have a perfect product or service. Conducting market research is important, because it can help you understand your customers better, who your competitors are, and your business landscape.

Why? Identify an opportunity

Research hookah lounges in your area to examine their products, price points, and customer reviews. You’re looking for a market gap to fill. For instance, maybe the local market is missing a hookah café that serves liquor or a shisha bar that offers food.

business plan bar a chicha

You might consider targeting a niche market by specializing in a certain aspect of your industry, such as herbal shisha or flavored tobacco.

This could jumpstart your word-of-mouth marketing and attract clients right away.

What? Determine your products and menu

You’ll want to create a hookah menu with different flavor mixes. You could also serve liquor with the proper licensing. If you put in a kitchen, you could offer food as well.

How much should you charge for hookah?

Hookah prices range from $15 to $25 per hour. Check prices in your area to make sure you’re competitive. Your profit margin after supplies, rent, and overhead should be about 30%.

Once you know your costs, you can use this Step By Step profit margin calculator to determine your mark-up and final price points. Remember, the prices you use at launch should be subject to change if warranted by the market.

Who? Identify your target market

Your target market will be Hookah smokers, which are likely to be a younger crowd, so you should focus your marketing on TikTok and Instagram.

Where? Choose a hookah lounge location

Choosing the right location for your hookah lounge is crucial for attracting customers and ensuring its success. Look for a spot in a high-traffic area with good visibility, such as a busy nightlife district or a college town.

Consider accessibility and convenience, ensuring that the location is easily reachable by public transportation and has ample parking. Additionally, assess the competition in the area and aim to differentiate your hookah lounge by offering unique flavors or a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere.

By strategically choosing the right location, you can establish a profitable and popular hookah lounge that offers a unique and enjoyable experience for customers and stands out in the competitive hospitality industry. You can find commercial space to rent in your area on sites such as Craigslist , Crexi , and Instant Offices .

Step 3: Brainstorm a Hookah Lounge Name

Here are some ideas for brainstorming your business name:

  • Short, unique, and catchy names tend to stand out
  • Names that are easy to say and spell tend to do better
  • Name should be relevant to your product or service offerings
  • Ask around — family, friends, colleagues, social media — for suggestions
  • Including keywords, such as “hookah” or “shisha lounge”, boosts SEO
  • Name should allow for expansion, for ex: “The Puff Palace” over “The Outdoor Hookah Lounge”
  • A location-based name can help establish a strong connection with your local community and help with the SEO but might hinder future expansion

Once you’ve got a list of potential names, visit the website of the US Patent and Trademark Office to make sure they are available for registration and check the availability of related domain names using our Domain Name Search tool. Using “.com” or “.org” sharply increases credibility, so it’s best to focus on these.

Find a Domain

Powered by GoDaddy.com

Finally, make your choice among the names that pass this screening and go ahead with domain registration and social media account creation. Your business name is one of the key differentiators that sets your business apart. Once you pick your company name, and start with the branding, it is hard to change the business name. Therefore, it’s important to carefully consider your choice before you start a business entity.

Step 4: Create a Hookah Lounge Business Plan

Here are the key components of a business plan:

what to include in a business plan

  • Executive Summary: A concise overview of your hookah lounge business, highlighting key elements such as mission, goals, and financial projections.
  • Business Overview: Detailed information about your hookah lounge, including its location, concept, and any unique selling points that set it apart in the market.
  • Product and Services: Clearly outline the variety of hookah flavors, drinks, and any additional services offered in your lounge.
  • Market Analysis: A comprehensive examination of the hookah lounge industry, target market demographics, and trends to identify opportunities for growth.
  • Competitive Analysis: Evaluate other hookah lounges in your area, assessing their strengths and weaknesses to position your business effectively.
  • Sales and Marketing: Detail your strategies for promoting and selling your hookah lounge services, including online presence, promotions, and partnerships.
  • Management Team: Introduction of key individuals involved in running the hookah lounge, emphasizing their qualifications and roles.
  • Operations Plan: Outline the day-to-day activities and logistics of running the hookah lounge, covering staffing, hours of operation, and supplier relationships.
  • Financial Plan: Provide a detailed breakdown of the costs, revenue projections, and financial forecasts for the hookah lounge, demonstrating its financial viability.
  • Appendix: Include any additional documents or information that supports your hookah lounge business plan, such as permits, licenses, or relevant research.

If you’ve never created a business plan, it can be an intimidating task. You might consider hiring a business plan specialist to create a top-notch business plan for you.

Step 5: Register Your Business

Registering your business is an absolutely crucial step — it’s the prerequisite to paying taxes, raising capital, opening a bank account, and other guideposts on the road to getting a business up and running.

Plus, registration is exciting because it makes the entire process official. Once it’s complete, you’ll have your own business!

Choose where to register your company

Your business location is important because it can affect taxes, legal requirements, and revenue. Most people will register their business in the state where they live, but if you’re planning to expand, you might consider looking elsewhere, as some states could offer real advantages when it comes to hookah lounges.

If you’re willing to move, you could really maximize your business! Keep in mind, it’s relatively easy to transfer your business to another state.

Choose your business structure

Business entities come in several varieties, each with its pros and cons. The legal structure you choose for your hookah lounge will shape your taxes, personal liability, and business registration requirements, so choose wisely.

Here are the main options:

types of business structures

  • Sole Proprietorship – The most common structure for small businesses makes no legal distinction between company and owner. All income goes to the owner, who’s also liable for any debts, losses, or liabilities incurred by the business. The owner pays taxes on business income on his or her personal tax return.
  • General Partnership – Similar to a sole proprietorship, but for two or more people. Again, owners keep the profits and are liable for losses. The partners pay taxes on their share of business income on their personal tax returns.
  • Limited Liability Company (LLC) – Combines the characteristics of corporations with those of sole proprietorships or partnerships. Again, the owners are not personally liable for debts.
  • C Corp – Under this structure, the business is a distinct legal entity and the owner or owners are not personally liable for its debts. Owners take profits through shareholder dividends, rather than directly. The corporation pays taxes, and owners pay taxes on their dividends, which is sometimes referred to as double taxation.
  • S Corp – An S-Corporation refers to the tax classification of the business but is not a business entity. An S-Corp can be either a corporation or an LLC , which just need to elect to be an S-Corp for tax status. In an S-Corp, income is passed through directly to shareholders, who pay taxes on their share of business income on their personal tax returns.

We recommend that new business owners choose LLC as it offers liability protection and pass-through taxation while being simpler to form than a corporation. You can form an LLC in as little as five minutes using an online LLC formation service. They will check that your business name is available before filing, submit your articles of organization , and answer any questions you might have.

Step 6: Register for Taxes

The final step before you’re able to pay taxes is getting an Employer Identification Number , or EIN. You can file for your EIN online or by mail or fax: visit the IRS website to learn more. Keep in mind, if you’ve chosen to be a sole proprietorship you can simply use your social security number as your EIN.

Once you have your EIN, you’ll need to choose your tax year. Financially speaking, your business will operate in a calendar year (January–December) or a fiscal year, a 12-month period that can start in any month. This will determine your tax cycle, while your business structure will determine which taxes you’ll pay.

business plan bar a chicha

The IRS website also offers a tax-payers checklist , and taxes can be filed online.

It is important to consult an accountant or other professional to help you with your taxes to ensure you’re completing them correctly.

Step 7: Fund your Business

Securing financing is your next step and there are plenty of ways to raise capital:

types of business financing

  • Bank loans: This is the most common method but getting approved requires a rock-solid business plan and strong credit history.
  • SBA-guaranteed loans: The Small Business Administration can act as guarantor, helping gain that elusive bank approval via an SBA-guaranteed loan .
  • Government grants: A handful of financial assistance programs help fund entrepreneurs. Visit Grants.gov to learn which might work for you.
  • Friends and Family: Reach out to friends and family to provide a business loan or investment in your concept. It’s a good idea to have legal advice when doing so because SEC regulations apply.
  • Crowdfunding: Websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo offer an increasingly popular low-risk option, in which donors fund your vision. Entrepreneurial crowdfunding sites like Fundable and WeFunder enable multiple investors to fund your business.
  • Personal: Self-fund your business via your savings or the sale of property or other assets.

Bank and SBA loans are probably the best option, other than friends and family, for funding a hookah lounge business. You might also try crowdfunding if you have an innovative concept.

Step 8: Apply for Hookah Lounge Business Licenses and Permits

Starting a hookah lounge business requires obtaining a number of licenses and permits from local, state, and federal governments. For starters, you’ll need a tobacco license as well as a liquor license if you serve alcohol.

Federal regulations, licenses, and permits associated with starting your business include doing business as (DBA), health licenses and permits from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration ( OSHA ), trademarks, copyrights, patents, and other intellectual properties, as well as industry-specific licenses and permits.

You may also need state-level and local county or city-based licenses and permits. The license requirements and how to obtain them vary, so check the websites of your state, city, and county governments or contact the appropriate person to learn more.

You could also check this SBA guide for your state’s requirements, but we recommend using MyCorporation’s Business License Compliance Package . They will research the exact forms you need for your business and state and provide them to ensure you’re fully compliant.

This is not a step to be taken lightly, as failing to comply with legal requirements can result in hefty penalties.

If you feel overwhelmed by this step or don’t know how to begin, it might be a good idea to hire a professional to help you check all the legal boxes.

Step 9: Open a Business Bank Account

Before you start making money, you’ll need a place to keep it, and that requires opening a bank account .

Keeping your business finances separate from your personal account makes it easy to file taxes and track your company’s income, so it’s worth doing even if you’re running your hookah lounge business as a sole proprietorship. Opening a business bank account is quite simple, and similar to opening a personal one. Most major banks offer accounts tailored for businesses — just inquire at your preferred bank to learn about their rates and features.

Banks vary in terms of offerings, so it’s a good idea to examine your options and select the best plan for you. Once you choose your bank, bring in your EIN (or Social Security Number if you decide on a sole proprietorship), articles of incorporation, and other legal documents and open your new account.

Step 10: Get Business Insurance

Business insurance is an area that often gets overlooked yet it can be vital to your success as an entrepreneur. Insurance protects you from unexpected events that can have a devastating impact on your business.

Here are some types of insurance to consider:

types of business insurance

  • General liability: The most comprehensive type of insurance, acting as a catch-all for many business elements that require coverage. If you get just one kind of insurance, this is it. It even protects against bodily injury and property damage.
  • Business Property: Provides coverage for your equipment and supplies.
  • Equipment Breakdown Insurance: Covers the cost of replacing or repairing equipment that has broken due to mechanical issues.
  • Worker’s compensation: Provides compensation to employees injured on the job.
  • Property: Covers your physical space, whether it is a cart, storefront, or office.
  • Commercial auto: Protection for your company-owned vehicle.
  • Professional liability: Protects against claims from a client who says they suffered a loss due to an error or omission in your work.
  • Business owner’s policy (BOP): This is an insurance plan that acts as an all-in-one insurance policy, a combination of the above insurance types.

Step 11: Prepare to Launch

As opening day nears, prepare for launch by reviewing and improving some key elements of your business.

Essential software and tools

Being an entrepreneur often means wearing many hats, from marketing to sales to accounting, which can be overwhelming. Fortunately, many websites and digital tools are available to help simplify many business tasks.

You may want to use industry-specific software, such as  Restaurant365 ,  lightspeed , or  toast  to manage your menus, inventory, schedule, and invoices.

  • Popular web-based accounting programs for smaller businesses include Quickbooks , Freshbooks , and Xero .
  • If you’re unfamiliar with basic accounting, you may want to hire a professional, especially as you begin. The consequences for filing incorrect tax documents can be harsh, so accuracy is crucial.

Develop your website

Website development is crucial because your site is your online presence and needs to convince prospective clients of your expertise and professionalism.

You can create your own website using website builders . This route is very affordable, but figuring out how to build a website can be time-consuming. If you lack tech-savvy, you can hire a web designer or developer to create a custom website for your business.

They are unlikely to find your website, however, unless you follow Search Engine Optimization ( SEO ) practices. These are steps that help pages rank higher in the results of top search engines like Google.

Here are some powerful marketing strategies for your future business:

  • Professional Branding — Ensure your branding reflects an exotic, luxurious, yet comfortable atmosphere through a distinctive logo, engaging signage, and the interior design of your lounge.

Focus on USPs

unique selling proposition

Unique selling propositions, or USPs, are the characteristics of a product or service that sets it apart from the competition. Customers today are inundated with buying options, so you’ll have a real advantage if they are able to quickly grasp how your hookah lounge meets their needs or wishes. It’s wise to do all you can to ensure your USPs stand out on your website and in your marketing and promotional materials, stimulating buyer desire.

Global pizza chain Domino’s is renowned for its USP: “Hot pizza in 30 minutes or less, guaranteed.” Signature USPs for your hookah lounge business could be:

  • Skip the tobacco – come enjoy our herbal shisha bar
  • Exotic hookah flavors and unique signature cocktails
  • Bring your friends and share a hookah over a bottle of wine

You may not like to network or use personal connections for business gain. But your personal and professional networks likely offer considerable untapped business potential. Maybe that Facebook friend you met in college is now running a hookah lounge business, or a LinkedIn contact of yours is connected to dozens of potential clients. Maybe your cousin or neighbor has been working in hookah lounges for years and can offer invaluable insight and industry connections.

The possibilities are endless, so it’s a good idea to review your personal and professional networks and reach out to those with possible links to or interest in hookah lounges. You’ll probably generate new customers or find companies with which you could establish a partnership.

Step 12: Build Your Team

If you’re starting out small from a home office, you may not need any employees. But as your business grows, you will likely need workers to fill various roles. Potential positions for a hookah lounge business include:

  • Hookah Makers – prepare hookahs
  • Bartender – make cocktails
  • Servers – serve hookah and drinks
  • General Manager – scheduling, ordering, accounting
  • Marketing Lead – SEO strategies, social media

At some point, you may need to hire all of these positions or simply a few, depending on the size and needs of your business. You might also hire multiple workers for a single role or a single worker for multiple roles, again depending on need.

Free-of-charge methods to recruit employees include posting ads on popular platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, or Jobs.com. You might also consider a premium recruitment option, such as advertising on Indeed , Glassdoor , or ZipRecruiter . Further, if you have the resources, you could consider hiring a recruitment agency to help you find talent.

Step 13: Run a Hookah Lounge – Start Making Money!

Hookah lounges have been common in the Middle East for centuries, and recently made their way to the United States. The hookah market is taking off, expected to double in the next decade. If you’re a hookah lover and want to share your passion with others, now is the right time to launch your own hookah lounge. You could help people enjoy their evenings out and make a good living at the same time.

Your business knowledge is fired up now, so it’s time to start buying water pipes and getting your successful hookah lounge off the ground.

  • Hookah Lounge Business FAQs

Yes, a hookah lounge can be profitable. You’ll need to design an interesting hookah menu and create a great atmosphere, and you can be successful.

To differentiate your hookah lounge business from competitors, you can focus on providing a unique atmosphere or ambiance that sets your lounge apart. This can include offering a diverse selection of high-quality shisha flavors, creating a comfortable and inviting space with unique decor or lighting, or providing exceptional customer service.

It would be very difficult to start a hookah lounge on the side unless you have limited hours, which could seriously affect your ability to make a profit.

The music and entertainment you offer in your hookah lounge business will depend on your target audience and the atmosphere you want to create. Some popular options include playing ambient or chill-out music, hosting live performances or DJs, or offering karaoke or open mic nights.

They used private loans and credit cards to start the business in 2020 and it became profitable as of late 2022. They employ six team members, three of whom serve at the bar and three who set up and serve hookah.

Hookah Lounge businesses are often funded through small business loans. Personal savings, credit card financing and angel investors are also popular forms of funding.

What are the Steps To Start a Hookah Lounge Business?

Starting a hookah lounge business can be an exciting endeavor. Having a clear roadmap of the steps to start a business will help you stay focused on your goals and get started faster.

1. Develop A Hookah Lounge Business Plan - The first step in starting a business is to create a detailed hookah lounge business plan that outlines all aspects of the venture. This should include potential market size and target customers, the services or products you will offer, pricing strategies and a detailed financial forecast.

2. Choose Your Legal Structure - It's important to select an appropriate legal entity for your hookah lounge business. This could be a limited liability company (LLC), corporation, partnership, or sole proprietorship. Each type has its own benefits and drawbacks so it’s important to do research and choose wisely so that your hookah lounge business is in compliance with local laws.

3. Register Your Hookah Lounge Business - Once you have chosen a legal structure, the next step is to register your hookah lounge business with the government or state where you’re operating from. This includes obtaining licenses and permits as required by federal, state, and local laws.

4. Identify Financing Options - It’s likely that you’ll need some capital to start your hookah lounge business, so take some time to identify what financing options are available such as bank loans, investor funding, grants, or crowdfunding platforms.

5. Choose a Location - Whether you plan on operating out of a physical location or not, you should always have an idea of where you’ll be based should it become necessary in the future as well as what kind of space would be suitable for your operations.

6. Hire Employees - There are several ways to find qualified employees including job boards like LinkedIn or Indeed as well as hiring agencies if needed – depending on what type of employees you need it might also be more effective to reach out directly through networking events.

7. Acquire Necessary Hookah Lounge Equipment & Supplies - In order to start your hookah lounge business, you'll need to purchase all of the necessary equipment and supplies to run a successful operation.

8. Market & Promote Your Business - Once you have all the necessary pieces in place, it’s time to start promoting and marketing your hookah lounge business. This includes creating a website, utilizing social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter, and having an effective Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategy. You should also consider traditional marketing techniques such as radio or print advertising.

How to Start a Hookah Lounge and Simplified Hookah Bar Business Plans

Start a hookah business

You've visited lounges, you love hookah, and you think it would be amazing to have your very own Hookah Lounge. I was in your shoes a few years back and through hard work turned that dream into a reality.  Here are a few things I learned in my journey that I hope can help you along the way.

So You Want To Open A Hookah Lounge?

Seems simple enough. Hookahs, Shisha, a few couches, some nice decor and presto! Success! If only it were that easy.  Opening a hookah lounge takes planning, organization, not to mention more money than expected. That is the first major hurdle. How to pay to get things going? The truth is it takes cash, and a lot of it. Banks don't look to fondly when it comes to loans for a hookah lounge, it's not a business with decades of proven success here in the states, so don't be surprised if the bank staff ask you what a hookah is. They probably don't know or understand the business, so it's a risky investment for most traditional institutions. That means you'll need to come up with  a good amount of money or get that savings account going strong. Once that is out of the way you just need to free up all your time to get things going.

Creating a Hookah Business Plan - Fail to plan then plan to fail

Business plans can come in a variety of formats and styles, so don't get hung up on the perfect business plan template that will impress a bank, investor or just your parents. What matters is the information inside. If you open your lounge without considering your monthly costs against your projected revenue, you might find out you opened a business that is impossible to sustain. Here is quick version of the math involved to make sure your new venture is even feasible.

First - How much money do you want to make? Opening a business with the blind hopes of making a profit is bad. Since your paycheck is the profit, find a profit number you are happy with and start planning from there. Here is a very brief and basic example of how to start planning with the financials in mind.

Profit  - The money left over after all your expenses are paid, so to make $4000 a month, let's look at this example:

Revenue  - The money you collect from people

Fixed Costs / Overhead  - The bills you pay every month regardless of how much money you bring in, such as rent, insurance, utilities and labor

Variable Costs  - The costs of the products and taxes you sell that will increase when you are busy and be lower when you are less busy

Here is very simplified version of the financial planningof a fictional lounge  that hopefully helps you get started.

$14,000 Revenue

Then Subtract:

$7500 (Fixed Costs - Rent, Labor, utilities, etc)

$2500 (Variable costs - Your shisha, replacement hookahs, mouth tips, sales tax, etc)

$4000 - Boom! Now you know how much money you need to bring in to make the profit you want to make.

Now I go back and look at the revenue.

$14000 divided by $20 hookah rentals = 700 rentals

700 Rentals divided by 26 days a month (Trust me, you should close at least 1 day a week until you are rock solid and can pay more staff to keep it open 7 days a week. Don't burn yourself out!)

You need to average 27 hookahs per night.  Now your job is to find a viable location that you can lease, staff, heat and insure for $7500

Finding a Location

One of the hardest parts of the process is finding a location. It took me 3 months to finally settle on a spot. Hookah is a lot of times an after thought for people so you need to be somewhere that will be seen. Check areas near other night businesses like bars and nightclubs or the popular areas near college campuses and even military bases can provide a good source of customers. Many landlords will be reluctant to lease to you as unfortunately a lot of Hookah Lounges that are hastily opened can fail. Plus many landlords fear the fire risk, don't want a tobacco based business, or just don't like the sound of it. You will then need to make sure the city will allow the business and the laws there will allow indoor smoking.

Getting the Proper Licenses and Permits

business plan bar a chicha

You need to check with the city for any permits you might need.  Some municipalities have special taxes, after hours permits, tobacco permits, construction permits, and other restrictions you might need to get approved. The state also has it's own list of permits and requirements as well. Do your homework, because the last thing you want is a government official showing up and asking for the permits you never applied for. Short cuts may be tempting but in the long run they can sabotage your business.

Building Out Your Location to Make It Your Own

So you finally have the money and a killer location.  Time to get to work!  This will probably be your biggest up front expense, depending on the level of customization.  You can go cheap here and use an existing layout, but a custom built lounge will look and feel much more exciting which gives you the leverage to charge more for your hookah rentals. Find the balance that is right for your budget and business plan.  Flooring, Lighting, layout, and design are just a few of the things that will need to happen. Personally I did most of the build out myself with the help of some fantastic friends, but even working 15 hours a day 7 days a week it took me over a month to get it ready.  Be prepared for roadblocks. Whether it be from construction delays to building inspectors dragging their feet, always assume it will happen.

Furniture and Decor - Don't Cheap out Now, Your Almost There

Now is the time to fill the place with seating. You're going to want something comfortable that fits whatever theme you're looking for.  One important thing to keep in mind is that you will probably have to replace pieces periodically. ( Coals burn things and accidents do happen ) try getting furniture that will be available in the event you need to replace. If your lounge looks professionally decorated you can charge more for the experience and you will attract higher end clientele than if your lounge looks like you added hookahs to someone's craigslist ad.

business plan bar a chicha

Hookahs and Supplies:

This is pretty much the last step apart from staffing. Here is where many people make a mistake. Many people get stuck on finding the perfect hookahs and want to test the flavors before they do anything. The hookahs are the easiest, cheapest and fastest part of the whole business. We can help you find the perfect hookah set ups to meet any need you have and have them there ready to smoke in a matter of days. Picking a menu is fun as well, you want to carry the standards that all hookah smokers will know and love but don't overlook bringing in new and unique brands to help set you apart from the rest. We can help you build out the right menu for your location, but please, please, please don't try to set up a lounge with over 100 flavors.  You will have 75 flavors that no one smokes and you will get stuck with all that slow moving inventory!

How to Write a Hookah Bar Business Plan in 7 Steps:

1. describe the purpose of your hookah bar business..

The first step to writing your business plan is to describe the purpose of your hookah bar business. This includes describing why you are starting this type of business, and what problems it will solve for customers. This is a quick way to get your mind thinking about the customers’ problems. It also helps you identify what makes your business different from others in its industry.

It also helps to include a vision statement so that readers can understand what type of company you want to build.

Here is an example of a purpose mission statement for a hookah bar business:

Our mission is to provide our customers with exceptional hookah experience in a modern and inviting atmosphere. We strive to provide the best quality hookah and tobacco products, along with friendly and knowledgeable customer service, so that our customers can enjoy every visit to our bar with confidence.

2. Products & Services Offered by Your Hookah Bar Business.

The next step is to outline your products and services for your hookah bar business.

When you think about the products and services that you offer, it's helpful to ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is my business?
  • What are the products and/or services that I offer?
  • Why am I offering these particular products and/or services?
  • How do I differentiate myself from competitors with similar offerings?
  • How will I market my products and services?

You may want to do a comparison of your business plan against those of other competitors in the area, or even with online reviews. This way, you can find out what people like about them and what they don’t like, so that you can either improve upon their offerings or avoid doing so altogether.

3. Build a Creative Marketing Stratgey.

If you don't have a marketing plan for your hookah bar business, it's time to write one. Your marketing plan should be part of your business plan and be a roadmap to your goals.

A good marketing plan for your hookah bar business includes the following elements:

Target market

  • Who is your target market?
  • What do these customers have in common?
  • How many of them are there?
  • How can you best reach them with your message or product?

Customer base

  • Who are your current customers?
  • Where did they come from (i.e., referrals)?
  • How can their experience with your hookah bar business help make them repeat customers, consumers, visitors, subscribers, or advocates for other people in their network or industry who might also benefit from using this service, product, or brand?

Product or service description

  • How does it work, what features does it have, and what are its benefits?
  • Can anyone use this product or service regardless of age or gender?
  • Can anyone visually see themselves using this product or service?
  • How will they feel when they do so? If so, how long will the feeling last after purchasing (or trying) the product/service for the first time?

Competitive analysis

  • Which companies are competing with yours today (and why)?
  • Which ones may enter into competition with yours tomorrow if they find out about it now through word-of-mouth advertising; social media networks; friends' recommendations; etc.)
  • What specific advantages does each competitor offer over yours currently?

Marketing channels

  • Which marketing channel do you intend to leverage to attract new customers?
  • What is your estimated marketing budget needed?
  • What is the projected cost to acquire a new customer?
  • How many of your customers do you instead will return?

4. Write Your Operational Plan.

Next, you'll need to build your operational plan. This section describes the type of business you'll be running, and includes the steps involved in your operations.

In it, you should list:

  • The equipment and facilities needed
  • Who will be involved in the business (employees, contractors)
  • Financial requirements for each step
  • Milestones & KPIs
  • Location of your business
  • Zoning & permits required for the business

What equipment, supplies, or permits are needed to run a hookah bar business?

To run a Hookah Bar business, the following equipment, supplies and permits may be necessary:

  • Hookah pipes
  • Flavored tobacco product such as shisha
  • Charcoal briquettes
  • Tongs and other accessories needed for operating hookah pipes
  • Cups and glasses for serving beverages
  • Furniture, such as tables and chairs
  • Relevant licenses and permits from the local health department or governing authority

5. Management & Organization of Your Hookah Bar Business.

The second part of your hookah bar business plan is to develop a management and organization section.

This section will cover all of the following:

  • How many employees you need in order to run your hookah bar business. This should include the roles they will play (for example, one person may be responsible for managing administrative duties while another might be in charge of customer service).
  • The structure of your management team. The higher-ups like yourself should be able to delegate tasks through lower-level managers who are directly responsible for their given department (inventory and sales, etc.).
  • How you’re going to make sure that everyone on board is doing their job well. You’ll want check-ins with employees regularly so they have time to ask questions or voice concerns if needed; this also gives you time to offer support where necessary while staying informed on how things are going within individual departments too!

6. Hookah Bar Business Startup Expenses & Captial Needed.

This section should be broken down by month and year. If you are still in the planning stage of your business, it may be helpful to estimate how much money will be needed each month until you reach profitability.

Typically, expenses for your business can be broken into a few basic categories:

Startup Costs

Startup costs are typically the first expenses you will incur when beginning an enterprise. These include legal fees, accounting expenses, and other costs associated with getting your business off the ground. The amount of money needed to start a hookah bar business varies based on many different variables, but below are a few different types of startup costs for a hookah bar business.

Running & Operating Costs

Running costs refer to ongoing expenses related directly with operating your business over time like electricity bills or salaries paid out each month. These types of expenses will vary greatly depending on multiple variables such as location, team size, utility costs, etc.

Marketing & Sales Expenses

You should include any costs associated with marketing and sales, such as advertising and promotions, website design or maintenance. Also, consider any additional expenses that may be incurred if you decide to launch a new product or service line. For example, if your hookah bar business has an existing website that needs an upgrade in order to sell more products or services, then this should be listed here.

7. Financial Plan & Projections

A financial plan is an important part of any business plan, as it outlines how the business will generate revenue and profit, and how it will use that profit to grow and sustain itself. To devise a financial plan for your hookah bar business, you will need to consider a number of factors, including your start-up costs, operating costs, projected revenue, and expenses.

Here are some steps you can follow to devise a financial plan for your hookah bar business plan:

  • Determine your start-up costs: This will include the cost of purchasing or leasing the space where you will operate your business, as well as the cost of buying or leasing any equipment or supplies that you need to start the business.
  • Estimate your operating costs: Operating costs will include utilities, such as electricity, gas, and water, as well as labor costs for employees, if any, and the cost of purchasing any materials or supplies that you will need to run your business.
  • Project your revenue: To project your revenue, you will need to consider the number of customers you expect to have and the average amount they will spend on each visit. You can use this information to estimate how much money you will make from selling your products or services.
  • Estimate your expenses: In addition to your operating costs, you will need to consider other expenses, such as insurance, marketing, and maintenance. You will also need to set aside money for taxes and other fees.
  • Create a budget: Once you have estimated your start-up costs, operating costs, revenue, and expenses, you can use this information to create a budget for your business. This will help you to see how much money you will need to start the business, and how much profit you can expect to make.
  • Develop a plan for using your profit: Finally, you will need to decide how you will use your profit to grow and sustain your business. This might include investing in new equipment, expanding the business, or saving for a rainy day.

Conduct Market Research

Before embarking on any business venture, conducting thorough market research is vital. This step allows you to gain a deep understanding of the industry and identify opportunities and challenges that may arise. Here are some important aspects to consider during your market research:

  • Target Audience: Determine who your target market is and what their preferences and needs are. This will help you tailor your offerings to appeal to your ideal customers.
  • Competition: Identify and analyze your competitors to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and unique selling points. This information will help you differentiate your hookah bar and develop effective strategies to stand out.
  • Market Trends: Stay updated on current market trends, such as the popularity of hookah bars, the demand for different flavors, and the preferences of your target audience. This knowledge will guide your decision-making process and enable you to adapt to changing customer needs.
  • Location: Determine the best location for your hookah bar based on demographic factors, foot traffic, and proximity to your target audience. Research the zoning regulations and any potential restrictions that may impact your choice.
  • Financial Viability: Assess the financial viability of your business idea by analyzing the potential revenue and profit margins in the hookah bar industry. This will help you set realistic financial goals and develop a successful business plan.
  • Utilize online resources, such as industry reports, market data, and survey platforms, to gather reliable information about the hookah bar industry.
  • Take advantage of social media platforms and online forums to engage with potential customers and gain insights into their preferences and expectations.
  • Consider conducting focus groups or surveys to gather direct feedback from your target audience.
  • Network with other industry professionals and attend relevant events and trade shows to stay updated and connected with the hookah bar community.

Identify Target Market And Competition

Identifying your target market and understanding your competition is essential for the success of your hookah bar. By conducting thorough market research, you can gain insight into the needs and preferences of your potential customers, as well as assess the competitive landscape in your area.

When identifying your target market, consider factors such as age, interests, income level, and geographic location. Determine whether your hookah bar will cater to a specific demographic, such as college students or young professionals, or if you aim to attract a broader customer base. This information will help you tailor your marketing strategies and offerings to appeal to your target audience.

  • Conduct surveys or focus groups to gather feedback from your target market.
  • Consider partnering with local event organizers or organizations that cater to your target market to increase your visibility.
  • Offer promotions or discounts exclusive to your target market to attract and retain their business.

Additionally, it is crucial to assess the competition in your area. Research existing hookah bars or similar establishments to understand their offerings, pricing, and customer base. This information will help you identify gaps in the market and differentiate your hookah bar from competitors.

Take note of the strengths and weaknesses of your competition and use this knowledge to refine your business concept and develop unique selling propositions. Consider ways to stand out, such as offering a wider selection of tobacco flavors, incorporating innovative technology, or providing exceptional customer service.

  • Visit competitors' establishments to experience their offerings firsthand and observe customer preferences.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies to stay ahead of the competition.
  • Analyze online reviews and ratings of competitors to gain insights into customer experiences and areas for improvement.

By thoroughly identifying your target market and analyzing the competition, you can develop a strategic plan to differentiate your hookah bar and attract your ideal customers. This step is crucial for creating a business plan that aligns with market demands and sets you up for success.

Determine Initial Startup Costs And Funding Options

Once you have conducted market research and identified your target market and competition, it's time to determine the initial startup costs of your hookah bar and explore funding options. This step is crucial in planning for the financial aspect of your business.

Calculating your startup costs:

  • Equipment: Determine the cost of purchasing or leasing necessary hookahs, hoses, bowls, coal burners, and other equipment required for your hookah bar.
  • Furniture and decor: Estimate the cost of furnishing your hookah bar with seating, tables, lounge areas, lighting, and any Middle Eastern-inspired decor elements.
  • Renovations and interior design: If you plan to modify the layout or design of the chosen location, consider the expenses involved in renovations, painting, flooring, and creating a comfortable and visually appealing atmosphere.
  • Permits and licenses: Research the cost of obtaining permits and licenses required for operating a hookah bar in your area.
  • Inventory: Estimate the cost of purchasing initial stock of tobacco flavors, charcoal, food items, drinks, and other consumables.
  • Marketing and advertising: Budget for promoting your hookah bar through online and offline marketing channels, including creating a website, social media campaigns, printed materials, and paid advertising.
  • Utilities and operational expenses: Consider monthly expenses such as rent, utilities (electricity, water, internet), insurance, cleaning services, and staff wages.
  • Research and compare prices from different suppliers to find the best deals on equipment, furniture, and inventory.
  • Consider purchasing used equipment or furniture in good condition to reduce initial costs.
  • Explore financing options such as small business loans, personal savings, or seeking investors to cover the initial startup costs.
  • Create a contingency fund to account for unexpected expenses or emergencies.
  • Consult with an accountant or financial advisor to ensure your budget is realistic and comprehensive.

By determining your initial startup costs and exploring funding options, you will have a clearer understanding of the financial requirements for launching your hookah bar. This step is vital in developing a solid business plan and securing the necessary funds to turn your vision into a reality.

Create A Detailed Financial Plan And Budget

Creating a detailed financial plan and budget is an essential step in setting up a successful hookah bar. It allows you to assess the financial viability of your business idea and make informed decisions about your operations.

To begin, start by estimating your startup costs. This includes expenses such as lease or purchase of suitable premises, renovation and decoration, hookah equipment, furniture, inventory, marketing, licenses, and permits. Be sure to research and include any additional costs specific to your location and business model.

Once you have determined your startup costs, you can move on to developing your budget. A budget helps you allocate funds for different areas of your business and ensures that you have a clear understanding of your expected income and expenses.

Here are some important considerations when creating your financial plan and budget:

Research Market Prices:

Track and control costs:, forecast revenue:, consider variable and fixed costs:, budget for marketing:, prepare for contingencies:.

Remember, your financial plan and budget should be periodically reviewed and adjusted to reflect changing market conditions and business performance. Regularly track and compare your actual financial results against your budgeted targets to identify areas where improvements can be made.

A well-developed financial plan and budget will not only guide your day-to-day financial decisions but also serve as a critical tool when seeking investment or financing for your hookah bar.

Develop A Unique Business Concept And Branding Strategy

Developing a unique business concept and branding strategy is crucial for the success of your hookah bar. This step involves defining what sets your establishment apart from competitors and creating a strong brand identity that resonates with your target market.

When developing your business concept, consider the atmosphere, ambiance, and overall experience you want to create for your customers. Are you aiming for a trendy and modern hookah bar or a more traditional and authentic setting? Think about the decor, music, and lighting that will appeal to your target demographic.

Tip 1: Conduct market research to understand the preferences and expectations of your target market. This will help you tailor your business concept to meet their needs and desires.

Your branding strategy should reflect the unique character of your hookah bar. It should convey your values, mission, and the overall experience customers can expect when they visit your establishment. Your brand name, logo, colors, and messaging should all align with your business concept.

Tip 2: Consider hiring a professional graphic designer or branding agency to help create a visually appealing and impactful brand identity for your hookah bar.

Furthermore, developing a unique business concept and branding strategy involves considering the services, products, and experiences you will offer. Apart from the hookah itself, think about the range of tobacco flavors, food, and drinks that will enhance customer satisfaction. You could also incorporate special events, live music, karaoke, or themed nights to attract more customers and build a loyal following.

Tip 3: Be sure to differentiate your hookah bar by offering unique features or experiences that competitors may not have. This could be themed decor, signature tobacco flavors, or exclusive partnerships with popular brands.

Remember, your business concept and branding strategy should be consistent across all touchpoints, including your website, social media presence, and marketing materials.

Tip 4: Use social media platforms, online advertising, and local partnerships to promote your unique business concept and branding strategy. Engage with your audience and encourage them to share their experiences to increase brand awareness and attract new customers.

Secure Necessary Permits And Licenses

When starting a hookah bar, it is crucial to secure the necessary permits and licenses to operate legally and ensure compliance with local regulations. Here are the key steps you should take:

  • Contact your local government: Reach out to the appropriate government agencies in your area to inquire about the permits and licenses required for operating a hookah bar. This may include health department permits, food service licenses, and tobacco permits.
  • Research specific requirements: Each jurisdiction may have its own set of regulations and guidelines for hookah bars. Make sure to fully understand and comply with these requirements to avoid any legal issues or penalties.
  • Obtain a business license: Apply for a business license from your local government, which grants you the legal authority to operate your hookah bar. Ensure that all the necessary documentation and fees are submitted promptly.
  • Consider health and safety permits: Depending on your location, you may need to obtain additional permits related to health and safety. This could include a food service permit if you plan to serve food.
  • Apply for a tobacco license: If you intend to offer tobacco products at your hookah bar, you will typically need to apply for a tobacco license. This license ensures that you are complying with all the regulations and age restrictions relevant to tobacco sales.
  • Adhere to zoning regulations: Ensure that your chosen location meets the specific zoning regulations for hookah bars. Some areas may have restrictions on where you can operate this type of business, so familiarize yourself with the local zoning ordinances.
  • Check for any other permits or licenses required by your state or city, such as music licenses if you plan to host live events.
  • Keep track of expiration dates for permits and licenses to ensure timely renewal and avoid interruptions in your business operations.
  • Consult with an attorney or a legal professional who specializes in licensing and permits to ensure that you have covered all necessary requirements and are operating within the law.

Find A Suitable Location For The Hookah Bar

Finding the right location for your hookah bar is crucial to the success of your business. Here are some important factors to consider:

  • Target Market: Research your target market and choose a location that is easily accessible to your desired customer base. Consider factors such as population density, demographics, and proximity to colleges or universities.
  • Competition: Evaluate the presence of other hookah bars or similar establishments in the area. While some competition can be beneficial, too much can make it challenging to attract customers. Look for a location that has a healthy balance.
  • Foot Traffic: Look for a location with high foot traffic. A busy street or a popular shopping center can help attract potential customers who may be enticed by the ambiance and offerings of your hookah bar.
  • Space and Layout: Assess the available space and ensure it can accommodate the necessary seating arrangements, hookah stations, and any additional amenities or event areas you plan to offer. The layout should allow for a comfortable and enjoyable experience for your customers.
  • Accessibility: Consider the accessibility of your location in terms of parking options, public transportation, and proximity to major roads or highways. Customers should be able to easily reach your hookah bar without inconvenience.
  • Health and Safety Regulations: Familiarize yourself with local health and safety regulations regarding smoking establishments. Ensure that the location meets all necessary requirements, such as proper ventilation systems and adherence to fire safety codes.
  • Lease Terms: Carefully review lease agreements and negotiate favorable terms, such as lease duration and rent costs, to ensure long-term sustainability and profitability for your hookah bar.
  • Consider conducting a feasibility study to assess the potential demand and profitability of your hookah bar in different locations.
  • Visit potential locations during different times of the day to evaluate the atmosphere and level of customer activity.
  • Engage in discussions with local business owners and residents to gather insights and feedback about potential locations.
  • Create a checklist of your location requirements and prioritize them to narrow down your options.

Build A Team Of Experienced Staff Members

When it comes to running a successful hookah bar, having a skilled and knowledgeable team is essential. Your staff members will be the face of your business and will directly interact with customers, so it's important to invest time and effort into building a team of experienced individuals.

1. Define Roles and Responsibilities: Before hiring staff members, clearly define the roles and responsibilities they will be expected to fulfill. This will help you determine the specific skill sets and qualifications you need in your team.

2. Advertise Job Openings: Use traditional and online platforms to advertise job openings for your hookah bar. Tap into local community resources, such as job boards and social media groups, to reach potential candidates.

3. Conduct Thorough Interviews: When interviewing candidates, ask relevant questions that will help you assess their experience, knowledge, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Look for individuals who have previous experience in the hospitality industry or who possess strong customer service skills.

4. Provide Comprehensive Training: Once you have selected your team members, provide them with comprehensive training on hookah preparation, customer service, safety protocols, and other necessary skills. J&J hookah bar is a bar that will function in a healthy environment and will make products such as shisha, and tobacco related products available to students of New York University and other customers. That’s not all that will be available at J&J hookah bar. Other products and services that will be available at J&J hookah bar include:

Market Analysis Market Trends

The hookah bar industry is not a new one in the United States. However, at the moment its prominence is rising very rapidly.

One reason for this is the emergence of various types of Shisha as well as various flavors of cigars. The sudden rise in the demand for hookah bars is also due to the fact that the products and services offered by hookah bars are considered safer than cigarette smoking.

Target Markets

Prior to setting up our hookah bar in New York, we carried out a detailed research and finally came to discover those that make the highest demands on hookah bars. As we result of that, we have come up with a list of people that are on our target radar. They include:

  • University Students
  • Celebrities

We are not the only ones that are into this business. Therefore, we have devised very effective methods that will help us get to our target market. They are:

  • Start out on a relatively cheaper price
  • Celebrate our customers
  • Create awareness using handbills
  • Place our greeters in strategic positions to help our customers fell very welcomed

Financial Plan Source of Startup Capital

In as much as starting a hookah bar is not so capital intensive, we have a plan of sourcing for capital from the bank.

This is because we want to start on a big note and with proper facilities. We already have 70% of the amount that we need. This amounts to $50,000, we are going to get the remaining amount from the bank.

One major factor which J&J hookah bar will use beat its competition is its very large parking space. Also, our compliance to safety and health standards will help us stand out in the crowd.

This is a business plan sample for a hookah bar. It will be located in New York and is owned a group of friends.

What Is a Bar Business Plan?

Like any other business plan, this specifically helps owners have a plan for their bar. It contains business goals and a timeframe to achieve them. It serves as a blueprint that guides bar owners in running day to day operations, drawing a growing number of patrons, and becoming a reputable establishment. It is also for getting financial support from potential partners and a guide for the management and operational processes of the business.

How To Draft a Bar Business Plan

No matter the purpose of your bar business plan, it is important for you to identify your business’ vision and mission. That way you can create a business plan that is necessary and helpful for the needs of your business. Check out restaurant and coffee shop business plans as a reference to get started. If you need more ideas, check out these tips in creating a bar business plan.

1. Be Aware Of The Market

Before you begin your business plan, understand the dynamics of the market for bar establishments. Knowing the needs of your customers, the trends that dictate the shift in the marketplace, and the way your competition reacts to certain scenarios can help you properly and carefully execute action plans for your bar business’s growth may it be in reach, actual sales, or brand awareness.

2. Create An Executive Summary

Come up with a bar business plan executive summary that can showcase the mission and vision of the business. You also have to make sure that this overview of what the business plan is all about should contain the principles and values that guide your business as well as the key factors that you need to consider for your successes.

3. Make An Organizational Structure

Describe the company and the nature of its operations before giving details about ownership and management. A start-up summary is most likely helpful in ensuring that the business will follow legal procedures and regulations for its operations.

4. List Down Your Resources

It is important for you to present the financial aspect of the business so that you can attract potential partners and investors, if necessary and applicable. Include information about your products and suppliers as well so that you can keep track of where you can get resources.

What are cocktails?

Cocktails are alcoholic beverages made of spirits and other ingredients such as fruit juice, soda, etc. They are one of the things commonly ordered and consumed in a bar. There are many kinds with varying ingredients, flavor, and appearance.

What makes a nightclub different from a wine bar?

While both places serve alcohol, the set up of the place is different. A nightclub is more focused on the entertainment of the patrons by providing drinks and music. In contrast a wine bar is a tavern-like establishment and tends to have a more relaxing ambiance like bistros.

What makes a tavern different from a bar?

Both places sell alcoholic beverages , but what makes them distinct from each other is that a bar does not necessarily serve food. A tavern on the other hand sells food and would often provide lodging. Taverns are an establishment that has existed for many centuries while bars started in the past few decades.

According to Statista research, sales in the drinking place sector in the United States have reached $23.15 billion in 2015. With the right kind of business plan your bar will certainly make sales that’ll contribute to such a number in the future. If you need more ideas on how to create a business plan then check out our business proposals and marketing strategy examples as references.

Starting a business in the United States involves a number of different steps spanning legal considerations, market research, creating a business plan, securing funding, and developing a marketing strategy. It also requires decisions about a business’ location, structure, name, taxation, and registration. Here are the key steps involved in starting a business, as well as important aspects of the process for entrepreneurs to consider.

Key Takeaways

  • Entrepreneurs should start by conducting market research to understand their industry space, competition, and target customers.
  • The next step is to write a comprehensive business plan, outlining the company’s structure, vision, and strategy.
  • Securing funding in the form of grants, loans, venture capital, and/or crowdfunded money is crucial if you’re not self-funding.
  • When choosing a venue, be aware of local regulations and requirements.
  • Design your business structure with an eye to legal aspects, such as taxation and registration.
  • Make a strategic marketing plan that addresses the specifics of the business, industry, and target market.

Before starting a business, entrepreneurs should conduct market research to determine their target audience, competition, and market trends. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) breaks down common market considerations as follows:

  • Demand : Is there a need for this product or service?
  • Market size : How many people might be interested?
  • Economic indicators : What are the income, employment rate, and spending habits of potential customers?
  • Location : Are the target market and business well situated for each other?
  • Competition : What is the market saturation ? Who and how many are you going up against?
  • Pricing : What might a customer be willing to pay?

Market research should also include an analysis of market opportunities, barriers to market entry, and industry trends, as well as the competition’s strengths, weaknesses, and market share .

There are various methods for conducting market research, and these will vary depending on the nature of the industry and potential business. Data can come from a variety of places, including statistical agencies, economic and financial institutions, and industry sources, as well as direct consumer research through focus groups, interviews, surveys, and questionnaires.

A comprehensive business plan is like a blueprint. It lays the foundation for business development and affects decision-making, day-to-day operations, and growth. Potential investors or partners may want to review and assess it in advance of agreeing to work together. Financial institutions often request business plans as part of an application for a loan or other forms of capital.

Business plans will differ according to the needs and nature of the company and should only include what makes sense for the business in question. As such, they can vary in length and structure. They can generally be divided into two formats: traditional and lean start-up. The latter is less common and more useful for simple businesses or those that expect to rework their traditional business plan frequently. It provides a vivid snapshot of the company through a small number of elements.

The process of funding a business depends on its needs and the vision and financial situation of its owner.  The first step is to calculate the start-up costs . Identify a list of expenses and put a dollar amount to each of them through research and requesting quotes. The SBA has a start-up costs calculator for small businesses that includes common types of business expenses.

The next step is to determine how to get the money. Common methods include:

  • Self-funding , also known as “ bootstrapping ”
  • Finding investors willing to contribute to your venture capital
  • Raising money online by crowdfunding
  • Securing a business loan from a bank, an online lender, or a credit union
  • Winning a business grant from a donor, usually a government, foundation, charity, or corporation

Different methods suit different businesses, and it’s important to consider the obligations associated with any avenue of funding. For example, investors generally want a degree of control for their money, while self-funding puts business owners fully in charge. Of course, investors also mitigate risk; self-funding does not.

Availability is another consideration. Loans are easier to get than grants, which don’t have to be paid back. Additionally, the federal government doesn’t provide grants for the purposes of starting or growing a business, although private organizations may. However, the SBA does guarantee several categories of loans , accessing capital that may not be available through traditional lenders. No matter the funding method(s), it’s essential to detail how the money will be used and lay out a future financial plan for the business, including sales projections and loan repayments .

Businesses operating in the U.S. are legally subject to regulations at the local, county, state, and federal level involving taxation, business IDs, registrations, and permits.

Choosing a Business Location

Where a business operates will dictate such things as taxes, zoning laws (for brick-and-mortar locations), licenses, and permits. Other considerations when choosing a location might include:

  • Human factors : These include target audience and the preferences of business owners and partners regarding convenience, knowledge of the area, and commuting distance.
  • Regulations : Government at every level will assert its authority.
  • Regionally specific expenses : Examples are average salaries (including required minimum wages), property or rental prices, insurance rates, utilities, and government fees and licensing.
  • The tax and financial environment : Tax types include income, sales, corporate, and property, as well as tax credits; available investment incentives and loan programs may also be geographically determined.

Picking a Business Structure

The structure of a business should reflect the desired number of owners, liability characteristics, and tax status. Because these have legal and tax compliance implications , it’s important to understand them fully. If necessary, consult a business counselor, a lawyer, and/or an accountant.

Common business structures include:

  • Sole proprietorship : A sole proprietorship is an unincorporated business that has just one owner, who pays personal income tax on its profits.
  • Partnership : Partnership options include a limited partnership (LP) and a limited liability partnership (LLP) .
  • Limited liability company (LLC) : An LLC protects its owners from personal responsibility for the company’s debts and liabilities.
  • Corporation : The different types of corporations include C corp , S corp , B corp , closed corporation , and nonprofit .

Getting a Tax ID Number

A tax ID number is the equivalent of a Social Security number for a business. Whether or not a state and/or federal tax ID number is required will depend on the nature of the business and the location in which it’s registered.

A federal tax ID, also known as an employer identification number (EIN) , is required if a business:

  • Operates as a corporation or partnership
  • Pays federal taxes
  • Has employees
  • Files employment, excise, alcohol, tobacco, or firearms tax returns
  • Has a Keogh plan
  • Withholds taxes on non-wage income to nonresident aliens
  • Is involved with certain types of organizations, including trusts, estates, real estate mortgage investment conduits, nonprofits, farmers’ cooperatives, and plan administrators

An EIN can also be useful if you want to open a business bank account, offer an employer-sponsored retirement plan, or apply for federal business licenses and permits. You can get one online from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) . State websites will do the same for a state tax ID.

Registering a Business

How you register a business will depend on its location, nature, size, and business structure.  For example, a small business may not require any steps beyond registering its business name with local and state governments, and business owners whose business name is their own legal name might not need to register at all.

That said, registration can provide personal liability protection, tax-exempt status, and trademark protection, so it can be beneficial even if it’s not strictly required. Overall registration requirements, costs, and documentation will vary depending on the governing jurisdictions and business structure.

Most LLCs, corporations, partnerships, and nonprofits are required to register at the state level and will need a registered agent to file on their behalf. Determining which state to register with can depend on factors such as:

  • Whether the business has a physical presence in the state
  • If the business often conducts in-person client meetings in the state
  • If a large portion of business revenue comes from the state
  • Whether the business has employees working in the state

If a business operates in more than one state, it may need to file for foreign qualification in other states in which it conducts business. In this case the business would register in the state in which it was formed (this would be considered the domestic state) and file for foreign qualification in any additional states.

Obtaining Permits

Filing for the applicable government licenses and permits will depend on the industry and nature of the business and might include submitting an application to a federal agency, state, county, and/or city. The SBA lists federally regulated business activities alongside the corresponding license-issuing agency, while state, county, and city regulations can be found on the official government websites for each region.

Every business should have a marketing plan that outlines an overall strategy and the day-to-day tactics used to execute it. A successful marketing plan will lay out tactics for how to connect with customers and convince them to buy what the company is selling.

Marketing plans will vary according to the specifics of the industry, target market, and business, but they should aim to include descriptions of and strategies for the following:

  • A target customer : Including market size, demographics, traits, and relevant trends
  • Value propositions or business differentiators : An overview of the company’s competitive advantage with regard to employees, certifications, and offerings
  • A sales and marketing plan : Including methods, channels, and a customer’s journey through interacting with the business
  • Goals : Should cover different aspects of the marketing and sales strategy, such as social media follower growth, public relations opportunities, and sales targets
  • An execution plan : Should detail tactics and break down higher-level goals into specific actions
  • A budget : Detailing how much different marketing projects and activities will cost

How Much Does It Cost to Start a Business?

Business start-up costs will vary depending on the industry, business activity, and product or service offered. Home-based online businesses will usually cost less than those that require an office setting to meet with customers. The estimated cost can be calculated by first identifying a list of expenses and then researching and requesting quotes for each one. Use the SBA’s start-up costs calculator for common types of expenses associated with starting a small business.

What Should I Do Before Starting a Business?

Entrepreneurs seeking to start their own business should fully research and understand all the legal and funding considerations involved, conduct market research, and create marketing and business plans. They will also need to secure any necessary permits, licenses, funding, and business bank accounts.

What Types of Funding Are Available to Start a Business?

Start-up capital can come in the form of loans, grants, crowdfunding, venture capital, or self-funding. Note that the federal government does not provide grant funding for the purposes of starting a business, although some private sources do.

Do You Need to Write a Business Plan?

Business plans are comprehensive documents that lay out the most important information about a business. They reference its growth, development, and decision-making processes, and financial institutions and potential investors and partners generally request to review them in advance of agreeing to provide funding or to collaborate.

Starting a business is no easy feat, but research and preparation can help smooth the way. Having a firm understanding of your target market, competition, industry, goals, company structure, funding requirements, legal regulations, and marketing strategy, as well as conducting research and consulting experts where necessary, are all things that entrepreneurs can do to set themselves up for success.

This study illustrates the spatio-temporal dynamics of urban growth and land use changes in Samara city, Russia from 1975 to 2015. Landsat satellite imageries of five different time periods from 1975 to 2015 were acquired and quantify the changes with the help of ArcGIS 10.1 Software. By applying classification methods to the satellite images four main types of land use were extracted: water, built-up, forest and grassland. Then, the area coverage for all the land use types at different points in time were measured and coupled with population data. The results demonstrate that, over the entire study period, population was increased from 1146 thousand people to 1244 thousand from 1975 to 1990 but later on first reduce and then increase again, now 1173 thousand population. Builtup area is also change according to population. The present study revealed an increase in built-up by 37.01% from 1975 to 1995, than reduce -88.83% till 2005 and an increase by 39.16% from 2005 to 2015, along w...

Land use/Cover Change in Russia within the context of global challenges. The paper presents the results of a research project on Land Use/Cover Change (LUCC) in Russia in relations with global problems (climate change, environment and biodiversity degradation). The research was carried out at the Faculty of Geography, Moscow State University on the basis of the combination of remote sensing and in-field data of different spatial and temporal resolution. The original methodology of present-day landscape interpretation for land cover change study has been used. In Russia the major driver of land use/land cover change is agriculture. About twenty years ago the reforms of Russian agriculture were started. Agricultural lands in many regions were dramatically impacted by changed management practices, resulted in accelerated erosion and reduced biodiversity. Between the natural factors that shape agriculture in Russia, climate is the most important one. The study of long-term and short-ter...

Annals of The Association of American Geographers

Land use and land cover change is a complex process, driven by both natural and anthropogenic transformations (Fig. 1). In Russia, the major driver of land use / land cover change is agriculture. It has taken centuries of farming to create the existing spatial distribution of agricultural lands. Modernization of Russian agriculture started fifteen years ago. It has brought little change in land cover, except in the regions with marginal agriculture, where many fields were abandoned. However, in some regions, agricultural lands were dramatically impacted by changed management practices, resulting in accelerating erosion and reduced biodiversity. In other regions, federal support and private investments in the agricultural sector, especially those made by major oil and financial companies, has resulted in a certain land recovery. Between the natural factors that shape the agriculture in Russia, climate is the most important one. In the North European and most of the Asian part of the ...

In recent decades, Russia has experienced substantial transformations in agricultural land tenure. Post-Soviet reforms have shaped land distribution patterns but the impacts of these on agricultural use of land remain under-investigated. On a regional scale, there is still a knowledge gap in terms of knowing to what extent the variations in the compositions of agricultural land funds may be explained by changes in the acreage of other land categories. Using a case analysis of 82 of Russia’s territories from 2010 to 2018, the authors attempted to study the structural variations by picturing the compositions of regional land funds and mapping agricultural land distributions based on ranking “land activity”. Correlation analysis of centered log-ratio transformed compositional data revealed that in agriculture-oriented regions, the proportion of cropland was depressed by agriculture-to-urban and agriculture-to-industry land loss. In urbanized territories, the compositions of agricultura...

Despite harsh climate, agriculture on the northern margins of Russia still remains the backbone of food security. Historically, in both regions studied in this article – the Republic of Karelia and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) – agricultural activities as dairy farming and even cropping were well adapted to local conditions including traditional activities such as horse breeding typical for Yakutia. Using three different sources of information – official statistics, expert interviews, and field observations – allowed us to draw a conclusion that there are both similarities and differences in agricultural development and land use of these two studied regions. The differences arise from agro-climate conditions, settlement history, specialization, and spatial pattern of economy. In both regions, farming is concentrated within the areas with most suitable natural conditions. Yet, even there, agricultural land use is shrinking, especially in Karelia. Both regions are prone to being af...

If Trump’s Conviction Lands Him in Prison, the Secret Service Goes, Too

The former president could face probation or prison time. Either option would be without precedent.

Former President Donald J. Trump in a dark suit.

By William K. Rashbaum

  • May 30, 2024

With Donald J. Trump’s unprecedented felony conviction on Thursday, what has long been a remote and abstract concept could move closer to a stunning reality: a former president of the United States behind bars.

But that wouldn’t happen fast.

A jury in Manhattan convicted Mr. Trump of 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree, a crime that under New York State law carries a possible sentence that ranges from probation to four years in prison.

But Mr. Trump is no ordinary defendant. And while most experts think a prison sentence is unlikely, the judge in the case, Juan M. Merchan, has made it known that he takes white-collar crime seriously. The judge set sentencing for July 11.

The Trump Manhattan Criminal Verdict, Count By Count

Former President Donald J. Trump faced 34 felony charges of falsifying business records, related to the reimbursement of hush money paid to the porn star Stormy Daniels in order to cover up a sex scandal around the 2016 presidential election.

If Justice Merchan hands down a punishment that lands the former president behind bars — what is known as a custodial sentence — Mr. Trump would be no ordinary prisoner.

That’s because the United States Secret Service is required by law to protect former presidents around the clock, which means its agents would have to protect Mr. Trump inside a prison if he was sentenced to serve time.

Even before the trial’s opening statements, the Secret Service was in some measure planning for the extraordinary possibility of a former president’s incarceration. In the days before the trial began in April, prosecutors asked Justice Merchan to remind Mr. Trump that attacks on witnesses and jurors could land him in jail even before a verdict was rendered.

Shortly thereafter, officials with federal, state and city agencies had an impromptu meeting about how to handle the situation, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.

That behind-the-scenes conversation — involving officials from the Secret Service and other relevant law enforcement agencies — focused only on how to move and protect Mr. Trump if the judge were to order him briefly jailed for contempt in a courthouse holding cell before or during the trial, the people said.

The far more substantial challenge — how to safely incarcerate a former president if he were to be sentenced to prison — has yet to be addressed directly, according to interviews with some of a dozen current and former city, state and federal officials.

That’s at least in part because a drawn-out and hard-fought series of appeals, possibly all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, would be almost a certainty. That would most likely delay Mr. Trump’s serving any sentence for months, if not longer, said several of the people, who like other experts have suggested that a prison sentence is unlikely.

Justice Merchan, whom Mr. Trump has continually attacked as “biased” and “corrupt,” could well decide to sentence Mr. Trump to probation rather than prison time.

That would raise the bizarre possibility of the former — and possibly future — commander in chief reporting regularly to a civil servant at the city’s Probation Department.

Mr. Trump would have to follow the probation officer’s instructions and answer questions about his work and personal life until the term of probation ended. He would also be barred from associating with disreputable people, and if he committed any additional crimes, he could be jailed immediately.

Incarceration would present a far greater challenge, especially because Mr. Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee for president. “Obviously, it’s uncharted territory,” Martin F. Horn, who has worked at the highest levels of New York’s and Pennsylvania’s state prison agencies and served as commissioner of New York City’s correction and probation departments, has said. “Certainly no state prison system has had to deal with this before, and no federal prison has had to either.”

Steven Cheung, the communications director for Mr. Trump’s campaign, has said that the case against the former president was “so spurious and so weak” that other prosecutors had refused to bring it, and called it “an unprecedented partisan witch hunt.”

“That the Democrat fever dream of incarcerating the nominee of the Republican Party has reached this level exposes their Stalinist roots and displays their utter contempt for American democracy,” he said.

Protecting Mr. Trump in a prison environment would involve keeping him separate from other inmates, as well as screening his food and other personal items, officials said. If he were to be imprisoned, a detail of agents would work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, rotating in and out of the facility, several officials said. While firearms are strictly prohibited in prisons, the agents would, most likely, nonetheless be armed.

Former corrections officials said there were several New York state prisons and city jails that have been closed or partly closed, leaving large sections of their facilities empty. One of those buildings could serve to incarcerate the former president and accommodate his Secret Service protective detail.

Anthony Guglielmi, the spokesman for the Secret Service in Washington, declined in a statement to discuss specific “protective operations.” But he has emphasized that federal law requires Secret Service agents to protect former presidents, adding that they use state-of-the-art technology, intelligence and tactics to do so.

Thomas J. Mailey, a spokesman for New York State’s prison agency, has said that his department could not speculate about how it would treat someone who has not yet been sentenced, but that it has a system “to assess and provide for individuals’ medical, mental health and security needs.” Frank Dwyer, a spokesman for the New York City jails agency, recently said only that “the department would find appropriate housing” for the former president.

While each count carries the possibility of up to four years in prison, Justice Merchan would most likely order any sentence to run concurrently, meaning Mr. Trump would serve prison time on each of the counts simultaneously. Under normal circumstances, any sentence of one year or less would generally be served on New York City’s notorious Rikers Island, home to the Department of Correction’s seven jails. (That’s where Mr. Trump’s former chief financial officer, Allen H. Weisselberg, 76, is serving his second five-month sentence for perjury .)

Any sentence of more than a year would generally be served in one of the 44 prisons run by New York State’s Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

And what if Mr. Trump is elected president in November? He could not pardon himself because the prosecution was brought by New York State, not the federal government. But it is unclear what would happen if he were sentenced to a prison term and appellate courts upheld his conviction while he was in office.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Nashville councilmembers have rejected plans for a glowing sign to be erected at Morgan Wallen’s new bar along the city’s neon-lit strip of honky tonks, citing his use of a racial slur that caused controversy in 2021 and recent criminal charges accusing the country star of throwing a chair off a rooftop near two police officers.

The Nashville Metro Council voted 30-3 Tuesday evening against the proposed sign at Morgan Wallen’s This Bar & Tennessee Kitchen, which is set to open this weekend. The sign would have hung over a public sidewalk, similar to those at many neighboring bars. Such a sign requires local government approval and usually isn’t a controversial process.

During debate, councilmembers called Wallen’s comments hateful and his actions harmful. They also said the performer has received multiple second chances.

“I don’t want to see a billboard up with the name of a person who is throwing chairs off of balconies and who is saying racial slurs,” said Councilmember Delishia Porterfield, who is Black.

Councilmember Jacob Kupin presented the proposal, but said he “thought long and hard” about what to do because of Wallen’s behavior. He said the third-party organization managing the business, TC Restaurant Group, has been “really, a good partner” and has worked to make downtown Nashville safer.

(AP Photo/Paul Sakuma, File)

The Associated Press reached out to Wallen’s publicist and TC Restaurant Group seeking comment on the council vote.

“The fact that someone’s name is going up on a bar doesn’t mean that we condone all the behavior, but again I appreciate the efforts to make amends, the positive response, and again, the operator themselves I don’t think should be penalized for what happened,” Kupin said.

An initial hearing in Wallen’s criminal case was postponed until Aug. 15. According to an arrest affidavit, the chair that Wallen is accused of throwing off the roof of the six-story Chief’s bar on April 7 landed about a yard (meter) from two police officers. Witnesses told officers they saw Wallen pick up a chair, throw it off the roof and laugh about it.

He is facing three felony counts of reckless endangerment and one misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct.

In a statement issued by Wallen, he said he accepted “responsibility” and was “not proud” of his behavior. The statement mentioned making “amends” and touching base with law enforcement.

Wallen’s “One Thing at a Time” album spent 16 weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 in 2023 and was the most-consumed album in the U.S. last year. Top 10 hits from the album included “Last Night,” “You Proof” and “Thinkin’ Bout Me.”

In 2021, Wallen was suspended indefinitely from his label after video surfaced of him shouting a racial slur, which he would later say was ignorant of him to use .

Ahead of a 2019 vote, some councilmembers bemoaned the design featuring a giant guitar in which the base of the instrument is intentionally shaped like a woman’s buttocks. Ultimately, they approved it.
