Learn the Secret to Nailing a Short Essay for Your College Applications
Students applying to college often spend most of their energy on their core essay for The Common Application or larger universities.
They will soon learn, however, that they need to master the art of writing shorter essays.
Lots of short essays.
Most of the private colleges that use The Common Application require students to write additional, short essays, called supplemental essays , or “supps” for short.
I was inspired to put together this Slideshare tutorial to help students on these shorter pieces because the University of California just changed their required essays from two longer ones to four shorter ones.

This document provides an overview of essay writing. It defines what an essay is and lists its key characteristics as unity, order, brevity, style, and personal touch. Essays are classified into narrative, descriptive, expository, reflective, and imaginative.
This document provides instructions for writing a 5-paragraph essay, including an introduction with a thesis statement, three body paragraphs that each discuss one point from the thesis, and a conclusion.
• Introduce the main idea (otherwise known as the thesis or claim) of the essay; • Introduce the purpose of the essay (will it inform, argue, persuade, describe, narrate, classify, etc.?).
4 HOW TO WRITE ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAYS STAGE 1: CHOOSING A TOPIC AND WRITING THE THESIS STATEMENT-Your topic must be debatable (and interesting).-Write an argumentative thesis statement.
Follow the basic essay format. Write an introduction with a “hook” Develop each of your main points. Use examples and details to fully support and develop. Write a conclusion that packs some punch. Revise. Use lively, clear words. Vary sentence beginnings and structures. Check for repetition and redundancy.
