Per graduation requirements, ALL schools require deposit of dissertations into our ETD Repository, which we call “LibraETD."  Most UVA masters programs have a graduation requirement to deposit masters theses in LibraETD as well.  View the Electronic Thesis & Dissertation Checklist  (ETDs) for more info. 

Theses deadlines are set by the schools, not by the Library.

Once a student defends their thesis/dissertation, a school or department administrator records that “milestone” in the student information system (SIS). The SIS system sends that information to LibraETD AND then sends an email to the student informing them that they can now deposit. Students CANNOT log on and deposit UNTIL they get a confirmation email from LibraETD.  This is important as many students think that as soon as they defend they can upload,  but they MUST wait until they receive an email message.

If a student has not received an email from LibraETD, and think that they should have, they need to email:    [email protected]    and the Libra Team will check.

PROV-014: Submission of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Policy Statement Procedures

Defines a common set of access levels for electronic thesis or dissertation (ETD) deposits and the process by which they can be requested.

• Embargo: Metadata, including the electronic thesis or dissertation (ETD) author, title, and abstract, that is publicly available through the University Library but the content of the ETD is not visible to any user at the University or otherwise.
• Limited Access: Metadata, including the electronic thesis or dissertation (ETD) author, title, and abstract, that is publicly available through the University Library but the full content of the ETD is restricted to UVA users who possess valid network access, as well as any member of the public accessing the UVA network on Grounds.
• Public Access: Full electronic thesis or dissertation (ETD) content that is publicly available online through the University Library.

All graduate students who are required to submit a thesis or dissertation as a condition of their degree program will do so electronically through Libra, the permanent digital repository of the University Library. Because the broad dissemination of knowledge is central to the University’s mission, electronic thesis or dissertation (ETD) deposits are normally publicly available upon degree conferral. In limited circumstances, however, access to the ETD in Libra may be restricted or placed under an embargo.

Upon consultation with their thesis or dissertation committee, students may choose either a public access or limited access option upon depositing an ETD in Libra. Schools should verify that such consultation has taken place (such as an addition to the graduation form). Limited Access may only be requested for periods of less than five years.

Upon consultation with their thesis or dissertation committee and approval from their dean’s office, students may also choose to place an embargo on an ETD deposited in Libra. Requests for ETD embargo must be transmitted to the Library by the dean’s office in the school awarding the degree. The limited circumstances warranting an embargo may include efforts to protect intellectual property during a patent application process, maintain confidentiality agreements protecting third-party proprietary information, or provide sufficient time to publish a dissertation in book form or as journal articles. If a student’s request to embargo their ETD is denied, a dean’s office representative will share in writing with the student and their committee chair the justification for denying the request. Initial embargos may be requested for periods of up to five years and may be renewed at the discretion of the dean’s office of the student’s school. In limited circumstances, and at the request of the student, a dean’s office may petition the provost’s office to extend an initial embargo period beyond five years.

At the time a student applies for graduation, schools will share this policy with graduate students who are required to submit a thesis or dissertation as a condition of their degree program.

The dean’s office should submit the embargo request via email to [email protected] . Student name and exact length of embargo (not to exceed 5 years) should be included in the email. The Library will acknowledge and confirm implementation of the embargo to the student, advisor, and dean by email.

Meet the Client Leadership Council (Part Two)

The fourth cohort of the Client Leadership Council (CLC) is nearing the end of their program and preparing for graduation.

Over the past 10 months, our CLC members have learned to leverage their lived experiences to advocate for change. They have the opportunity to learn from both professionals and their peers. For instance, a recent session included presentations by Dr. Jessica Young of American University and Dr. Janice Davis of Howard University on overcoming personal and social stigma, as well as the impact of inequities embedded in American systems.

Get to know several members of the current class and what they’ve learned from this year’s program:

Demeke Shiferaw

Hometown: Chevy Chase, MD

Backgro und: Demeke started his career by working at the Ethiopian Community Center, where he eventually progressed to a leadership role. He has consistently sought opportunities to enhance his understanding of client dynamics and improve the client experience. He says that the CLC’s focus on collaborative learning, and staying ahead of industry trends aligns with both his professional goals and personal values. After graduating from the CLC, he plans to continue advocacy work and connect with stakeholders to address the issue of hunger in the community.

“The CLC equipped me with the tools to articulate the needs of my community, particularly in areas such as food security, housing, and access to essential benefits. By learning how to frame these issues compellingly, I have been able to advocate more effectively for comprehensive solutions that address the root causes of poverty and hunger.” -Demeke Shiferaw

Corena Watkins

Hometown: Washington, DC

Backgro und: Corena is a single mother of seven adult children and is raising her youngest granddaughter. She has struggled to get a job at times and relies on programs such as SNAP and WIC to make ends meet. Even with assistance, she finds that it is often just enough to survive. Through the Client Leadership Council, she has gained tools to advocate for herself and others in a positive and constructive way. After graduation, she hopes to fight for more change and make a difference.

Tahjae Pitts

Backgro und: Tahjae faced numerous challenges growing up in Congress Park and becoming a young mother at 15. She looks to her strong single mother who worked multiple jobs to make ends meet as inspiration to break the norm and become a positive influence in her Southeast DC community. Throughout the program, she has learned that it is OK to start over in life. After graduation, she hopes to start her own non-profit organization for youth.

Joshua Burris

Backgro und:  Joshua is a native of Prince George’s County. He is a Navy veteran and identifies as part of the LGBTQ+ community. After the pandemic, he lost his job and decided to go back to school at Howard University. This exposed him to how widespread food insecurity is and how much it hinders students. He says the CLC has provided him with tools to advocate on behalf of others in similar situations to him. His key takeaway for the future is to take every opportunity to speak up because you never know who is listening and will hear what you have to say.

Mariam Zainab

Hometown: Annandale, VA

Backgro und : Mariam was born and raised in Pakistan. In 2007, she immigrated to the U.S. with her father. Overcoming challenges such as language barriers, housing difficulties, and food insecurity, she learned how to be self-reliant and grew empathy for others facing similar difficulties. The CLC has exposed her to the multifaceted nature of food insecurity and how various organizations work together to support vulnerable populations. She commits to utilizing her lived experience to advocate for causes that promote equity and better society.

Unified bank parent company earns recognition.

MARTINS FERRY — United Bancorp, the parent company of Unified Bank, has been named to the American Banker’s “Top 100 Publicly Traded Community Banks” list, according to an article in the June 9 edit ion of the American Banker Magazine.

American Banker rated United Bancorp 49th on the list, based on an average return on equity for the three years that ended Dec. 31.

For the past several years, United Bancorp has consistently climbed the American Banker Top 200 Publicly Traded Community Banks list, coming in 84th in the nation last year. This year, American Banker narrowed the field by renaming the list from the Top 200 to the Top 100 in the nation.

“We are exceptionally proud to, once again, be recognized this year by American Banker as a top-performing community bank in the nation,” said Scott Everson, president, chairman and CEO of United Bancorp. “We are even more honored to make their Top 100 Community Banks list. We are also pleased to see that, relative to our peers, our overall performance has not only held fast this past year, but our company has climbed to 49th out of 100 on this prestigious list of top-performing community banks.

“This recognition is a testimony to the focused culture that we have at United Bancorp and our affiliate, Unified Bank, and our exemplary team that is strongly committed to fulfilling our vision of creating better lives and futures for the people and communities that we proudly serve,” Everson added.

The dependency on technology has raised concerns about the loss of cognitive skills like visuospatial working memory (VSWM), which involves the short-term storage and manipulation of visual and spatial information. This essential skill is reportedly declining among frequent GPS users, as tools like Google Maps limit spatial decision-making. Conversely, frequent video game players are reported to have enhanced spatial cognition, suggesting that some technologies might impair cognitive abilities, while others could strengthen them. This observation led to the current thesis project investigating the influence of navigation strategies and video game usage on VSWM. The study used the Corsi Block Tapping Task and an adaptation with landmarks to assess navigation strategies. Video game usage was measured with a questionnaire. Spatial spans and reaction times were recorded to test the hypotheses. The experimental results revealed contradicting results between guided and unguided navigation strategies, with participants performing better in the unguided condition than in the guided condition. Additionally, there were no significant differences between gamers and non-gamers in spatial span and reaction time during the Classic and Landmark Corsi tasks. These findings suggest that the interplay between video games, navigation strategies, and working memory requires further exploration to understand how technology can hinder and enhance our cognitive abilities.

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — The World Bank has approved a $2.25 billion loan for Nigeria to shore up revenue and support economic reforms that have contributed to the worst cost-of-living crisis in many years for Africa’s most populous country.

The bank said in a statement late Thursday that the bulk of the loan — $1.5 billion — will help protect millions who have faced growing poverty since a year ago when President Bola Tinubu came to power and took drastic steps to fix the country’s ailing economy.

The remaining $750 million, the bank said, will support tax reforms and revenue and safeguard oil revenues threatened with limited production caused by chronic theft.

President Tinubu’s economic reforms — including ending decadeslong but costly fuel subsidies and unifying the multiple exchange rates — have resulted in surging inflation that is at a 28-year high.

Under growing pressure from citizens and workers protesting the hardship , Tinubu’s government said in May that it was seeking the loan to support its long-term economic plans.

Mohamed Malick Fall, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria, told a U.N. news conference in New York that about $800 million will go to a cash transfer program that will enable the number of households benefitting from social support to increase from 3 million to 15 million. That will help alleviate immediate suffering and means it could impact up to 70 million people, considering that every household has five to seven people, he said.

Fall said the government has put about $450 million into a social protection scheme and to sustain the social safety net in the long=term, the U.N. is advising them to develop a sustained investment program that isn’t dependent on foreign assistance as part of its poverty alleviation plan.

The government said it was also taking steps to boost foreign investment inflows which fell by 26.7% from US$5.3 billion in 2022 to US$3.9 billion in 2023, according to the Nigerian Economic Summit Group think tank.

Nigeria already has a high debt burden that has limited how much money the government can spend from its earnings. Its reliance on borrowings for public infrastructure and social welfare programs saw public debt surge by nearly 1,000% in the past decade.

The World Bank, however, said it was “critical to sustain the reform momentum” under Tinubu. The government’s economic policies have placed the country “on a new path which can stabilize its economy and lift its people out of poverty,” according to Ousmane Diagana, the World Bank vice president for Western and Central Africa.
