The top three  resume formats  for 2024 are reverse-chronological, functional, and combination/hybrid. Each format showcases your aptitude for the job in different ways.

  • Reverse-chronological : This format stresses your career progression by putting your most recent job at the top. It’s easy to skim, but it can reveal gaps in employment or career changes.
  • Functional : Skills are the name of the game with this format, which highlights position-related and transferable skills alike. However, it can confuse ATS and recruiters since it’s not common.
  • Combination/hybrid : It’s the best of both worlds with an in-depth skills section and a work history section, but it can be hard to format and isn’t ATS-friendly.

We believe the reverse-chronological format, as shown below, is the best choice for a human resources resume because it’s easy for ATS and recruiters to read quickly and tells a consistent, steady of your career.

Include the right details in your contact header

Your contact header is where you list (surprise, surprise) your contact information. In this section, you’ll want to include the following:

  • Job title you’re seeking
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • City/State (optional)
  • Professional links (optional but recommended)

Since your contact header is the first thing recruiters will read, you need to design it carefully. Place your contact header at the top of your resume, either centered or left-aligned, to make it easy to spot. If you’re struggling to fit everything, remove the optional elements or go down a font size.  Just make sure it’s no smaller than your resume body text . 

You should also adjust the color, font style, and layout. Giving your name a different font and a color block outline can showcase your personality and desired role. No matter what you do with your contact header, just ensure it’s easy to read and looks professionally appealing.

Make your HR resume readable for software and people

HR professionals know the hiring process is complex, so ATS can be a lifesaver when used well. That means that when you write your HR resume, keep ATS in mind to avoid getting the boot.

Our tips on formatting elements can help you format your resume to impress ATS and employers.

  • Margins : Avoid margins smaller than half-inch or larger than one inch to give your resume a professional and clean appearance.
  • Fonts : Sans-serif fonts are the best for ATS readability, but unusual fonts aren’t a good choice. Choose safe standards like Arial, Verdana, and Helvetica.
  • Font sizes : Overly large or small fonts are overwhelming and hard to read. Use 10 or 12-point font sizes to keep reading a cinch.
  • Header names : ATS systems aren’t programmed to recognize creative header names, so stick to industry standards like “work experience” and “skills.”
  • Skills:  Include skill keywords listed on the job description to ensure your resume passes ATS inspection.
  • Logical order : ATS and recruiters read resumes quickly, so organize your resume according to industry recommendations. Namely, put your contact header at the very top and put your work experience in the middle.
  • One page : Recruiters have limited time to read endless qualifications, so keep your resume to a single page. 
  • File type : Some ATS won’t recognize .dot, .txt, .jpg, or other file types that aren’t .docx. Submit your resume as a Word document and PDF to cover all your bases.

Determine whether you should use an objective/summary

Many people will argue that a  resume objective  or summary is a waste of space that’s “me-centric.” Yet, a worthwhile objective or summary can showcase your qualifications and give a snapshot of  how  you can impact a business. 

Good objectives and summaries tell the recruiter why you should be hired in three sentences or less. They should highlight your skills while expressing how you’ll use your unique experience in the role for which you’re applying. 

Objectives are typically used when you’re changing careers or just starting out, and they focus on your strengths and transferable skills. Summaries are used for those who have been in their career field for some time, and they function as a snapshot of your long-standing career.

You may not need a summary or an objective, but if you do choose one, always tailor it to each job for which you apply. 

For example, generic objectives give nothing more than buzzwords like this:

  • Talented human resources professional seeking new opportunities. Skilled at hiring, management, and communication.

This doesn’t tell the recruiter anything about the candidate’s unique experience (or  anything  about the candidate at all). A good objective is specific and personable, like this example:

  • Compassionate and detail-driven HR professional with 3 years of experience. I want to use my interpersonal communication skills and conflict resolution abilities to increase employee satisfaction at CORE. My goal is always to foster relationships from the start of the onboarding process, resulting in a 15% decrease in ETR. 

Similar to the example above, notice how this savvy candidate tailors the career objective to the target business.

Summaries are excellent tools if you’re further along in your career. If you’re SHRM-SCP certified or have been in management for years, you should use a  summary for your resume . Summaries can be difficult, though, because you have to cram in years of experience, often resulting in something that looks like this:

  • Experienced HR professional who is organized and passionate about people. I am certified and ready to bring my 10+ years of communication, training, and administration skills to your company. 

It’s not bad per se, but it’s vague and not tailored to the company. The one below gives examples of the applicant’s skills and what they’ll provide for their employer:

  • Onboarding and employee training are my specialties as a PHR-certified manager with 10+ years of HR experience. I’m passionate about talent acquisition, coaching, interviewing, and compensation/benefits. I wish to use my skills to increase employee satisfaction and training effectiveness while decreasing time-to-hire and time-to-productivity at CORE.

Like the visual below, the above summary explains goals, specialties, and what the candidate can do for their future employer. When writing your objective or summary, make sure it’s detailed and concise to showcase your best qualities.

HR professionals wear a lot of hats, so it can be tempting to cram in as many past jobs as you can to showcase your adaptability and skills. This results in a resume that’s overloaded without a clear focus.

Instead, list  two to four of your most relevant job experiences . Doing so provides a clear story of your career and gives you room to expand on the responsibilities and skills you obtained from each position. 

If you lack formal job experience, list internships, volunteer/leadership work, and projects related to your desired HR position.

Write actionable bullet points

Bullet points are the bread and butter of your experience section, so your writing should be as specialized as possible in this area. Use active verbs and targeted language without resorting to personal pronouns to create the most impact. Consistency is key, so match your verb tenses and either use punctuation or avoid it altogether.

Metrics are frequently missed in HR resumes, but they’re a huge asset. They’re definitive proof that you’ve done your job well. So, you should aim to include metrics on 50 percent of your job description bullet points.

When discussing your job responsibilities , try to include some of the following  HR metrics :

The skills section on an HR resume presents your attributes and qualifications in an easy way to read. Regardless of your experience, this section showcases why you’re the best candidate for the job because you possess the traits and knowledge the employer is seeking. 

This is why ATS prioritizes skill keywords to weed out candidates, so nailing this section is crucial. To ensure you stay on the recruiter’s list, choose skills that appear in the job description or those related to similar HR positions.

Depending on your education level, years in the workforce, and any specializations and certifications, you may need to include different sections on your resume.

For example, if you have multiple certifications, it may not be wise to crowd them all in your objective/summary. Instead, list them in your skills section.

You may wonder if you should add a  hobbies and interests section to your resume , but most HR resumes shouldn’t include these. Interests and hobbies can be useful in tipping the scale in your favor, but most often, they don’t increase your chances significantly.

However, if the job description or ad mentions company culture or the importance of interests, you should include an interests and hobbies section. For example, if you apply for an entertainment company position, including your love of Harry Potter and Star Wars might be beneficial.

Every job is different, so each resume you submit should also be unique. Human resources jobs will have things in common, so you don’t need to revamp your resume completely. Still, pay attention to the differences with each position. There’s a variety of resume formats you can choose from. Some of them can be way out of the box in terms of design and formatting. Others are more traditional and straightforward.

A few weeks ago we decided to compare all the available ATS software out there.

We wanted to find out how different document file types and resume formats fared against each other. And what the key characteristics of a quality resume are.

The crucial deciding factor in all cases was text formatting. More specifically:

  • File format: PDFs are preferable because it’s a file type that both preserves the formatting of your resume and it’s easily read by the ATS software.
  • Length/Columns : There is leniency on how long your resume can be or how you can divide it.
  • Section Headings : Name each of your sections accordingly.
  • Colors and Design : There are no restrictions on the color scheme or your design choices.
  • Fonts : ATS software products are inclusive of all Google fonts.

Now, what do these mean for you?

An HR manager’s role isn’t for junior professionals or college grads. You must already have some experience in order to apply.

This means that the reverse-chronological resume format is your best option. Try to fit your work history and qualifications in a single page. Even if your career spans over a decade.

Showcase only relevant work experience. Present a clear and concise story of how you have developed as an HR professional.

Add a splash of color but keep it sensible and appropriate for the role.

Alternatively, if you’ve only had one past employer or you’re switching careers, use the hybrid resume format .

This one will help you supplement what little industry experience you have with other relevant information. Such as certificates, side projects or transferable skills.

The HR industry is large and it deals with so much more than just talent recruitment. That’s why you must divulge where your expertise lies.

One way to do this is to directly address it in the resume header . As this section serves as your business card, you must stand out among other candidates sooner than later.

You know that recruiters spend about 6 seconds on average reviewing individual resumes. Make your resume header count.

Other information to add in this section includes your:

  • First and last name
  • Full job title. Or the job title of the position you’re pursuing, if you’re switching careers.
  • Professional email
  • Phone number
  • Business social media account, such as LinkedIn

Here is how to do it:

The resume summary is your first chance to get noticed by hiring managers for your accomplishments.

There are two ways you can approach writing this section:

  • Write a short paragraph of 5-6 sentences, referencing your skills and success stories.
  • Create a short list with no more than three bullets. Share your accomplishment and the way you achieved it in each bullet.

The first approach is the standard one for resume summary writing. Its aim is to, as the name suggests, detail your:

  • Years of experience
  • Skills and qualifications
  • Career achievements

This is a foolproof way to pass the ATS systems. By referencing job description keywords near the top of your resume, your application will be flagged as relevant by the software.

In contrast, the second method is rather new. Its merits lay in pointing the recruiters’ attention to what projects you would like to continue working on.

Check out the following examples to see how it works:

It’s important to keep the momentum of your resume summary. The experience section is by far the largest section of your resume in terms of real estate.

This is where you must present a well-rounded story which paints how your career has developed over the years. For each of the entries on your experience list, include:

  • Your full job title
  • Dates of employment. If this is your current position, just add your start date and write “Present” for an end date. Keep the formatting consistent.
  • The full name of your company. Avoid using abbreviations, despite what popularity your employer may have. If you’re switching careers, this fame won’t matter much.
  • Company location, as well as description of its main business operations.
  • Between 3 to 5 bullet points, depending on your circumstances. If you’re switching careers, stick to HR-related achievements.

Cataloging achievements works wonders. But here’s the catch - you’ll have to tie them to results, too.

How do you do that?

Start each bullet point with an action verb , instead of buzzwords. Focus on one success story at a time: provide context and detail the challenges you’ve overcome.

For example, let’s assume you’ve helped your HR department after an M&A. You can say:

Job Description

The Department of Social Services (DSS) is comprised of the administrative units of the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA) and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS). HRA is dedicated to fighting poverty and income inequality by providing New Yorkers in need with essential benefits such as Food Assistance and Emergency Rental Assistance. DHS is committed to preventing and addressing homelessness in New York City by employing a variety of innovative strategies to help families and individuals successfully exit shelter and return to self-sufficiency as quickly as possible. Human Resources Administration/Office of the Administrator is recruiting for one (1) Executive Deputy Administrator (HRA) M-VII, to function as the Chief Financial and Performance Management Officer. Under the executive direction of the Commissioner, with the greatest possible latitude for independent initiative and un-reviewed action, the Chief acts as the chief financial officer and chief advisor on financial and performance management activities for the Department of Social Services (DSS), the Human Resources Administration (HRA), and the Department of Homeless Services (DHS). The Chief oversees the activities of the Finance Office, the Office of Research & Policy Innovation, and the Office of Performance Management; develops financial plans, formulates research goals and priorities, and performance monitoring and reporting across DSS-HRA-DHS. Additionally, the Chief provides financial interpretation of policies and regulations for managerial staff, establishes, and maintains working relationships with other chief officers and other executives within DSS-HRA-DHS, provider agencies, and other federal, state, and city agencies. The Chief Financial and Performance Management Officer will: - Provide executive oversight and management of the agencies’ multi-billion-dollar budget. Formulate financial management goals and priorities, support the Commissioner and executive leadership team by providing ongoing counsel and advice on all financial and budgetary matters, and advocate with the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) on behalf of DSS-HRA-DHS. - Provide executive oversight and management of the agencies’ research and performance management programs. Formulate research and performance management strategies, goals, and priorities and support the commissioner and executive leadership team by providing ongoing counsel and advice on program performance matters. - Manage and oversee planning, management, and coordination for all divisions within the Chief’s portfolio; and ensure the efficient and effective management of daily operations. - Interpret financial and programmatic policies and regulations for staff responsible transforming these polices and regulations into operational programs. Oversee changes in financial policy made in response to changing regulations, policies, or legal action, in close collaboration with the General Counsel and Office of Legal Affairs. - Work closely with the Chief People Officer (CPO) to manage the agencies’ personnel and temporary services budgets. Collaborate with the CPO on matters before the Office of Management and Budget as they pertain to the personnel services budget and agencies’ headcount management process. - Maintain liaison with executive level staff from various public, private, and community agencies involved with the DSS-HRA-DSS, including our vendors. Allocate resources to Inter-Agency projects as necessary. - Collaborate with the Chief Accountability Officer and provide support and assistance with financial and programmatic audits, inquiries, and corrective action plans, when necessary. - Manage the development of program budgets and the allocation of resources. - Represent DSS-HRA-DHS before the City Council and other legislative bodies, as well as with federal and state authorities involved in or providing oversight of Agency activities.

1. A master's degree from an accredited college in economics, finance, accounting, business or public administration, human resources management, management science, operations research, organizational behavior, industrial psychology, statistics, personnel administration, labor relations, psychology, sociology, human resources development, political science, urban studies or a closely related field, and two years of satisfactory full-time professional experience in one or a combination of the following: working with the budget of a large public or private concern in budget administration, accounting, economic or financial administration, or fiscal or economic research; in management or methods analysis, operations research, organizational research or program evaluation; in personnel or public administration, recruitment, position classification, personnel relations, employee benefits, staff development, employment program planning/administration, labor market research, economic planning, social services program planning/evaluation, or fiscal management; or in a related area. 18 months of this experience must have been in an executive, managerial, administrative or supervisory capacity. Supervision must have included supervising staff performing professional work in the areas described above; or 2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and four years of professional experience in the areas described in "1" above, including the 18 months of executive, managerial, administrative or supervisory experience, as described in "1" above.

Bengal Management Essentials Workshop Series

This fall semester the Human Resources Training Department will offer a Bengal Management Essentials workshop for the third year in a row. This is a two hour workshop every Thursday from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., beginning on September 12, and wrapping up with a graduation luncheon on November 21.

Each week experts from around campus will address important topics related to being a manager, supervisor, dean, chair, coach, etc. at ISU.

Topics include having Hard Conversations, Performance Management, understanding FMLA, and many more.  Below is a schedule. More info will become available as topics and instructors are finalized. All classes will be via Zoom.
