09 . Excellent property and very convenient to USC activities. Front desk staff is extremely efficient, pleasant and helpful. Property is clean and has a fantastic old time charm.

TEA, STRAWBERRIES AND STEAMBOATS AT THE CAMERON HIGHLANDS RESORT

The Cameron Highlands is an easy 3 hour bus journey from Kuala Lumpur. Known for its beautiful rolling hills, cooler temperatures, and wonderful tea plantations, the Cameron Highlands is a wonderful change of pace from Kuala Lumpur.

When I started researching hotels to stay at during my trip, I quickly realised that the Cameron Highlands Resort was easily the best hotel option. I’m excited to share some of the things that made my stay at the Cameron Highlands Resort so memorable!

The Cameron Highlands Resort is steeped in history and fully embraces the feel of the Cameron Highlands. Built as an extension from a 1930’s cottage, the resort has a very unique colonial feel, with some of the architecture dating all the way back to 1070!

The hotel feels like you are in a very luxurious yet welcoming colonial home, complete with a shared fireplace (where you can enjoy a fire lighting ceremony if it is a special occasion), wood flooring, and beautiful white shutters.

Each of the Resort’s 56 rooms and suites perfectly captures the colonial yet comfortable feel shown in the lobby.

I stayed in a Deluxe room, which is perfect for a couple with its king sized four-poster bed, spacious seating area, and private balcony overlooking the neighbouring golf course (note all rooms have a balcony).

I was so content to make a cup of tea, which was provided in the room, and sit on the balcony reading my book. It was truly an escape from the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur , and was such a relaxing experience to simply breathe in the cool mountain air while looking at the rolling hills in the distance.

Cameron Highlands Activities

If you want a more active experience, the Cameron Highlands Resort has you covered as well. They can help organise all sorts of tours and fun things to do around the Cameron Highlands .

Jim Thompson Mystery Trail

The Resort organises complimentary walking trail tours, where an experienced resident naturalist explains all about the plants, animals, and extensive history of the area. I did the “ Jim Thompson Mystery Trail ” on my first morning, which was a leisurely 45 minute beginner hike through the jungle with our amazing guide Madi.

During our walk Madi made sure to point out several interesting facts, including background information on Jim Thompson who the walk was named after.

Boh Tea Plantation

The next day we were treated to a half day tour with Madi. This tour explored farther from the hotel and included a visit to the Boh tea plantation .

The tea plantation is absolutely massive and includes a look into how the tea is made, from growing, to refining, to drinking. There is a great little restaurant on a balcony overlooking the tea fields, and Madi expertly showed us some of the lesser known vantage points to take some incredible pictures from!

Strawberry Farm and Temples

The rest of our day included a visit to a strawberry farm, where we were given a pair of scissors and a basket to go and pick our own strawberries. These were some of the best tasting strawberries I’ve ever had, straight from the vine!

Finally, we also visited Sam Poh Temple, which is the oldest Buddhist temple in the area. Madi was providing funny stories throughout the entire tour, making the day even more enjoyable!

The Spa At The Cameron Highlands Resort

After a long day of sightseeing, one of my favourite things to do is relax in the spa. As you would expect from a luxury hotel, the Spa Village at the Cameron Highlands Resort was one of a kind!

I was treated to a “Fresh Strawberry Escapade” experience in their Spa Village, which was truly one of the most unique spa treatments I’ve ever had.

Strawberries are extremely important in the Cameron Highlands, with countless strawberry farms and products, so this “Escapade” involved a tea and strawberry bath, a 1 hour massage, and strawberry scrub wrap which soothes inflammation and softens the skin.

Seriously, if you have never had a relaxing massage and then been covered in strawberries you need to experience it at least once in your life!

The Spa Village offers a wide range of other treatments as well. From traditional massages, to rose petal facials, to other amazing experiences offered only at the Cameron Highlands Resort (like a Chrysanthemum & Avocado Escape or a “Cameron’s Mint” treatment), the Spa Village is the perfect way to relax after a long day with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating areas to chill out.

The Cameron Highlands Resort has a good number of in-house  dining options , each with its own character matching its unique location.

I started my day each morning with breakfast at the traditional Dining Room restaurant, which offered a combination of made to order dishes and a self-served buffet. The dining room overlooked the neighbouring golf course and mountains in the distance, and was the perfect setting to plan out my day.

I also had dinner one night in the Dining Room, which transforms into a smart casual restaurant with an excellent selection of colonial, western, and local foods.

Each day the culinary team would go out and get the freshest ingredients, and this attention to detail really pays off because the food was all excellent. Be sure to save room for dessert, because there were some delicious choices, and as we all know calories don’t count on vacation!

Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea is another important part of the Cameron Highlands, and the Cameron Highlands Resort organised a perfect one in their Jim Thompson Tea Room. The beautifully furnished Tea Room offers a place to sit and relax while enjoying a wide range of pastries, sandwiches, and strawberries with your cup of tea.

This experience reminded me of being back in England, and I really felt miles away from the heat and craziness of the city. A delicious lunch is also served daily in the same Tea Room, which is a perfect spot to kick back and relax while having some traditional dishes.

Steamboat Dinner

Finally, no Cameron Highlands trip is complete without a proper “Steamboat” dinner experience. Luckily you will not have to venture far to find the best Steamboat in the Cameron Highlands, because the Resort has one in their very own “Gonbei” restaurant.

For the unacquainted, a Steamboat dinner involves a pot of boiling soup with different flavors, where you cook your meat and vegetables yourself tableside.

Situated near the guest rooms in the back of the hotel, Gonbei is a half outdoor seating area which lets you fully appreciate the cool night air while eating your meal.

The manager of the restaurant was exceptionally nice, making recommendations on the best combinations of food and explaining how the process worked, from picking our boiling base to adding the right amount of meat and vegetables.

It’s difficult for me to pick my best meal at the Cameron Highlands Resort , but I would have to lean towards Gonbei because the food was not only incredible, but the entire experience was so much fun and memorable!

The Cameron Highlands Resort is the premier resort in the Cameron Highlands, and after my stay, it is easy to see why they have earned their stellar reputation. The setting and amenities are beautiful, the food is outstanding, the activities very well organised, and the customer service is always fast and friendly.

…well-known professional travel writer and Uptake Lodging Editor Nancy D. Brown takes a break from her perpetual traveling to share with us more of her sage advice on writing travel reviews.

Here are her tips on writing that perfect destination review :

Set the Hook – Draw the Reader In

“As the train pulled into the station, it appeared strangely quiet in Bordeaux, France. Grabbing our backpacks, we walked into town to secure lodging for the night. After numerous rejections from French pensions, we turned our attention toward food. Certainly we could find a room at an Inn serving local wine country cuisine, right?”

The above paragraph is from an article I wrote for Diablo magazine about how food relates to travel .

The introduction to the article is an example of a nut graf ; which is editorial slang for defining the news value in a story. The descriptive lede ( yes, more journalism speak ) is meant to draw the reader into the story . Ideally, your lede should paint a picture for the reader; draw them in and, set the hook, so to speak.

This is a much better approach to writing a vacation destination review than, “Our train stopped in Bordeaux, France. We went to look for lodging. We couldn’t find any restaurants that were open.”

Vacation Destination as Service Piece

Service pieces, such as “Insider Tips” or “Things to See and Do” for specific travel destinations, are meant as informational articles for the reader. Similar to writing a lodging review, it is vital to include the five Ws : Who, What, When, Where, Why ( and, whenever possible, how much ) as those are the typical questions a reader needs answered before determining their vacation destination.

  • “The first place I take a visitor from out of town is to the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, amazing trails right in downtown with views of mountain ranges, and the waters of Cook Inlet, and along the trail Earthquake Park.”
  • “When I crave a local brewpub I turn to Glacier BrewHouse, FireTap Alehouse or Snow Goose Restaurant, where I can dine on local favorites like the fresh catch of the day, a wood-fired pizza, and wash it all down with a local microbrew.”
  • “To escape work I head for the trails the wind through Anchorage Parks and greenbelts for a run, a bike, or a quick cross-country ski.”

The above “Insider Tips” were taken from a post I wrote on the “ Best Things to See and Do in Anchorage, Alaska “, for my “ What a Trip ” blog.

Position Yourself as a Vacation Destination Review Expert

Case in point, I was asked by the Chicago Tribune to write a service piece on “ How to Watch the Iditarod Sled Dog Race ” while visiting Alaska. The travel editor found me online through one of the many vacation destination reviews I had written about Alaska.

Be a Destination Review Expert in Your Backyard

If you are new to travel writing or travel blogging, I strongly suggest you toil in your own vineyard, initially. After all, who is more qualified to write a vacation destination review on your hometown? Establish yourself as a local expert , write a column for your local newspaper and then venture outside the box to wider ranging vacation destination venues.

Select Your Travel Writing Style

Your travel writing style will depend on the publication or editorial outlet where your vacation destination review will appear.

In newspapers and magazine, articles are typically written in third person. Quotes from outside sources are important to bring credibility and differing perspectives to your article.

First person perspective is more commonly found when writing for travel blogs. Entire vacation destination reviews are often written from the travel blogger’s point of view.

What type of travel writing speaks to you? Select some of your favorite travel writers and publications and craft your vacation destination reviews in a similar fashion.

Eventually, you will find your own voice and writing style that fits your personality.

I think you pretty much covered the main points. I like how you pointed out how the first paragraph needs to draw the reader into the story. This point is often overlooked by writers, but it’s definitely worth the time and effort.

Since it is important to me personally, I also include if a place is kid-friendly (and how), and about the disability access. Not everyone wants to know this, but many people do.

8 Tips for Writing Hotel Reviews that Editors Want

Writing hotel reviews isn’t as straightforward as it might seem. While it’s easy to write a few words about what you do and don’t like about a place, professional reviews require you to go a lot deeper, while keeping the prose engaging and fresh. Whether you’re new to hotel reviewing or just looking to refine your writing, consider these eight tips for writing a hotel review that will sparkle. 

1. Read reviews and talk to guests.

Writing a hotel review is a service to potential visitors, and your experience staying at a property is one of many. It’s a great idea to read online consumer reviews about the hotel you’re writing about as well as talk to guests while you’re there. Other people may notice things that you haven’t, and taking others’ experiences and opinions into consideration will help you pen a well-rounded piece.

2. Watch your language.

If your hotel review sounds like a PR speech, your readers are going to have a hard time trusting you. Avoid using flowery prose or terminology that sounds like it came straight from a brochure. Instead, speak to your readers the way you would to a friend. On the same token, try more casual terms (think “room service” instead of “in-room dining”). 

3. Answer the question: Why should I stay here?

If you’ve gone through the trouble to write a hotel review and a website or publication has gone through the trouble to publish it, chances are you think it’s worth staying in. Your readers will want to know why. Is there something standout about the rooms? Is the location fantastic? Is the free breakfast buffet an attraction unto itself? Let your readers know! 

4. Don’t leave out the facilities.

Hotels are more than just blocks of rooms, and it’s important to highlight the facilities. While you might not be much of a gym rat, some of your readers will be, so at least have a look to see if the gym is more than a couple of old kettlebells and a broken elliptical in the basement. While you might be a vacationer, many people use reviews to find properties for events and meetings: find out about that wedding chapel and meeting rooms. And don’t forget to try the food! Meal options can really make or break some guests’ hotel experiences. 

5. Create a scene.

Part of being a good reviewer is helping your readers picture themselves in the hotel you’re reviewing. Use your five senses, describing and evoking the scents, sounds, and sights of the hotel. Are the windows kept open, allowing a breeze to come in? Are most guests wearing suits and huddled around laptops? Is the smell of coffee permeating the air? Is there music piped in, or maybe someone playing a piano? Show us, your readers, the whole picture. 

6. Tell us something we don’t know.

While it’s pretty easy to garner a basic idea about a hotel by simply spending a few minutes on its website, the real gems usually come from people who have already stayed in the property. Go beyond the facts and tell your readers something special about the hotel. Maybe it’s housed in a converted farmhouse or perhaps there’s a trusty hotel pet that greets guests in the lobby. Use anecdotes to engage your readers. 

7. Tell us about the area around the hotel.

Don’t forget to tell readers about the area around the hotel. Basic location info is good (for example, if the property is near the airport, guests will want to know). Additionally, remember to also show your readers what to expect of the neighborhood. Is it quiet or lively? Walkable? Safe? 

8. Don’t be afraid of your voice.

Finally, don’t be afraid to use your voice. While you’ll want to follow the basic conventions of your publication, it’s great to let your own unique voice shine through. It will breathe life into your piece and make it more fun to read.

Based on your trip experience, you may want to praise or tear apart the hotel location where you stayed. Knowing how to write hotel reviews will help you give an unbiased consumer opinion that may help others make well-informed travel decisions in regards to their lodging accommodations.

Step 1 Choose a review site such as TripAdvisor, TravBuddy or TravelPost.

  • Give advice to the travelers such as providing details that you wish you would have known before you went on the trip.
  • Give information about the property that can't be found on the website. Tell if there are a restaurant or two right next door, so meals were relatively inexpensive, or share that it was in a secluded location and you could only eat at the expensive hotel restaurant.

Write simple and to-the-point

There are many factors you can write about when it comes to hotel reviews. We will get into these factors shortly, but you must take into consideration that you should not write a lot about each factor of the hotel, like food, amenities, location, services, and … as your review will become a course paper.

Many people want to have an overview of the hotel's good and bad aspects and would not want to check everything in detail, especially if everything was normal. Be balanced and honest

There is a big chance you are writing the review as something negative has happened during your stay. In my opinion, negative reviews are very encouraged as they can give a good perspective to the user on what to watch out for, and I appreciate them.

However, people tend to forget about all the good conditions of the hotel when they are mad about something. Being mad and frustrated can influence your writing and can make it way harsher than it should be.

Therefore, it is important to always try to be balanced and completely honest in your reviews to give others the best advice and not just trash the hotel.

Avoid inappropriate language

Much related to the previous point, avoid using inappropriate words and comments when writing the review. The review, which is written with proper words and sentences, is way more acceptable to people compared to the ones that are written inappropriately.

Use a star rating

For sure, this will depend on where you are writing the review, as not all platforms provide such an opportunity. However, nowadays, many of the review platform and hotel websites let you choose a star rating for the hotel you are reviewing, which is a great way to summarize all your experience for the reader. So make sure to include that!

What to Include in the Hotel Review

Facilities and amenities.

Obviously, when it comes to hotels, readers want to know about the facilities and amenities of the hotel. 

Always facilities and amenities of the hotel are listed on the website and the hotel page, so it is not necessary to point them out. Instead, try to write about your experience using those facilities and their positive/negative aspects.

Staff and Service

One can argue that the staff and service provided by the hotel are even more important than the facilities, and for many people is. 

It is always expected that the Staff provides good service for the customers as hotels are a part of the hospitality industry, so personally, I think it is important to point out clearly about this matter. Make sure to include all the negative aspects of the service in your review, if any.

Dining options

Personally, I like the hotel breakfasts a lot! and I would use the RatePunk word cloud to understand the quality of the breakfast.

It is safe to say many people care about the food, so it is a big help to write about the dining options of the restaurant. 

Value for Money

Value of money is becoming a more important a topic in hotel reviews daily by day. It even has a star rating on many hotel platforms.

I see it as a great overview to know if people staying at that hotel felt that their money was well spent or not. It can tell you whether the hotel is too expensive for its service or it is just right! 

For it to be easier for you, consider the facilities, service, location, and overall comfort.

How to Write Hotel Reviews Like a Pro: Top TripAdvisor reviewer personal secrets on writing professional hotel reviews to secure more brand partnerships and comp stays.

Everybody loves reviews! Whether you are chatting with your friends about your amazing vacay or writing a complaint on TripAdvisor, quality hotel reviews are nowadays akin to liquid gold for the travel industry. Traveler reviews are both expected, anticipated, welcomed, and feared… Knowing how to write an effective hotel review is something every travel blogger absolutely has to master. Some of us, professional travel bloggers, are even making a living by writing hotel reviews, and you can too!    

There are pages and pages of websites dedicated just to reviews. Before starting my travel blog, I have been a member of TripAdvisor since 2007 and have written over 350 reviews for hotels, resorts, restaurants and attractions, and by now have over 230,000 readership. Writing hotel reviews is an excellent way to share your travel experience with your followers, and to showcase your quality reviewer skills to brands who would [hopefully] want to work with you in the future. 

Here are some of my own secrets to help you writing hotel reviews like a professional travel blogger.

The decision on whether or not you start writing a review on a particular hotel or experience always starts with being honest with yourself first. What would your message be?

Was your hotel stay amazing and impeculiar? Or did you find yourself in an absolute nightmare? Is your review going to be positive? Or are you not planning to write a hotel review at all but a massive complaint letter? 

It is a personal choice of every travel blogger of what content to create for your blog of course. 

Here are a few thoughts for you to consider if you decide to trash someone on your blog: 

  • If you were a brand considering working with me on a campaign, would you risk inviting me to stay at your place if you saw trash reviews posted about other places? Probably not… 
  • Hotels are starting to bite back against negative reviews, some even threat reviewers with legal action . Does it mean you should not leave a bad review if your experience was bad? Of course not. Just make sure your review is factual and can be supported by photos or witnesses. …and try not to get sued!
  • If you are venting out, using swear words, calling people names, using over exaggerated language, are you to be taken seriously by your readers or would you be perceived as hysterical? Swear language is never ok, by the way.

I personally prefer to stay positive on my travel blog. If I am writing a hotel review and posting it here, it means in general it all went well, good or excellent… I will provide practical recommendations on things that could be improved, and be honest in relating my personal experience with the property.

If something did go terribly wrong during my stay, I would typically try to sort things out on-site with the property directly. Sht happens to everyone, you know. It is only fair to present the hotel management with facts and give them the opportunity to remedy the situation right then and there. Then on your blog, you can put a positive spin on it and write about the heroism and wonderfulness of the hotel staff who went above and beyond in mitigating your horrible situation. If anything, this will add some drama and an ultimately positive outcome. Both your readers and the brand will appreciate the honesty. 

If the resolution is unsuccessful however, and I am still upset, I may write a detailed fact-based non-emotional review on my TripAdvisor account. But not here. PerfectDayToPlay is my positive happy place. 

I am only writing reviews about hotels that are “tried and true”. I would not even consider writing a positive review about a non-resolved horrible stay, or place I have never been to, even if offered payment.

In addition, I have a standard clause in my collaboration contracts: if you are a brand and you want to collaborate – excellent! I will try you out and if all goes well – you get a positive review on my blog, otherwise no review, but a private letter with details of what happened and recommendations for improvement.

Some travel bloggers suggest that if your overall experience was outstanding, it may not be worth mentioning minor details that didn’t really matter to you in the long run… I somewhat disagree and prefer keeping my reviews factual, as something that did not matter to me, could be a make-it-or-break-it decision for some of my readers. 

Plus a too good to be true hotel review sounds fake, and you risk losing trust of your audience if all your reviews are uniformly A-mazing!

Be Personal

Ok, so you decided you’ll go for it. 

How do you write a professional hotel review? Where do you start?

Start with yourself. The easiest way to start off is to pretend your best friend wants to go too, and you are now telling her all about your trip all the way to the finest details. 

Talk about things like why did you travel and who did you travel with. Were you in town on business or as a tourist? Did you travel solo, with kids or with friends? Did you have your dog with you and how your pet was treated?

When did you travel? Peak season or off-season? 

Was it easy to book? Was the price reasonable? 

Also, it is a good idea to let your readers know how often you travel so your reviews can be “weighted”. If you have traveled all over the world for years and the hotel you are reviewing is the best you have ever stayed at, this has more weight than if this is your first ever trip abroad. 

In our case for example, as mentioned earlier, we’ve travelled to 4 continents, over 20+ countries, 200+ cities, and have reviewed over 350 experiences on my TripAdvisor account where I currently have 230,000 readership.

Be Specific

It is important to be descriptive and specific in your review. 

Instead of just saying the lobby was nice – explain why you thought it was. 

Example: the lobby had a feeling of an upscale but cozy countryside home, with satin sofas, velvet armchairs, gold colour floral wall-paper on the walls and a large crystal chandelier right in the middle giving soft warm light.

Writing hotel reviews is a skill akin to writing a good novel. Your readers should hear the buzz of the lobby, feel the warmth of the fireplace, smell the delicious aroma of freshly made shepards pie.. You got the idea? 🙂

Throw in a joke or two here and there, tell an anecdote about your encounter with another guest [keeping privacy of course], make a funny comparison – everyone loves a bit of humour!

Talk About the Location

When introducing the hotel, pinpoint its location and add their address. It may be a good idea, as I often do, to add a photo of a map and hotel’s location to the nearest landmark like an International airport or the city centre. 

How do you get to the property? Was your airport cab or a shuttle expensive? How long did it take? Is there a free airport shuttle hotel offers?

Describe what’s around the hotel: attractions, restaurants, parks, shopping centres, things to do. Tell you readers whether you have found the location to be convenient, or not as much.

When writing to describe properties in your hotel reviews, go into as much detail as possible. Give your readers a feeling of the property size, class and comfort. 

Start by sharing with your readers on how many stars the resort or hotel is rated within the industry standard, and then go into details on what’s included.

There is almost a standard list I usually go off in writing hotel reviews: 

  • Property size
  • Number of buildings (for resorts), floors
  • Parking and availability of vallet
  • Restaurants & bars
  • Pool, hot tub, gym, spa
  • Entertainment
  • Meeting and event space, could it be a potential wedding venue?
  • Business centre
  • Outdoor garden and amenities (eg. bike rental service)
  • Availability of concierge service
  • Do I feel secure?
  • Internet / WiF
  • Notes on the style and the decor
  • Is the property stroller-friendly and wheelchair-accessible
  • Anything else specific to the property

As our family is very eco and sustainability focused, we are always on a lookout for eco-friendly practices and programs that brands are implementing. If discovered – we’ll include a special section on our hotel review promoting the hotel’s eco-effort. Otherwise, we will leave a suggestion to the management on what can be done better in order to achieve a greener score.

How Was Your Room?

Your hotel room is your home away from home for the duration of your stay. So how was your room? Did you feel at home?

Some room-related questions to consider when writing hotel reviews: 

  • What was the room type? Was the room spacious or cozy? 
  • Was the room clean? Was it cleaned every day? How did it smell? 
  • Was the room quiet? Could you sleep?
  • Bed size? How many beds? Was your bed comfortable?
  • What other furniture did you have in the room?
  • Did you have air conditioning? Was it working? Was it easy to figure out the controls?
  • What other amenities did you have: TV, fridge, minibar, microwave, coffee maker, kettle, hair dryer?
  • Were all the amenities free or did you have to pay for, let’s say, a microwave to be brought up?
  • Did you have WiFi in your room?
  • Did you have a safe or a locker? 
  • Did you feel safe in your room?
  • Did your room have a balcony? How was the view?
  • Anything else specific to your room. For example, last time we stayed at Prestige Oceanfront Resort in Sooke, BC we had a TV in our bathroom!

Food: Feast or Femin

Food options, convenience and quality are as big of a part of your hotel stay as your bed. A good meal, a long wine list and a hospitable waitstaff can make it or break it for you.

Did the hotel have a restaurant on-site? How many bars did they have and when did those close? Were there any coffee shops? Did your hotel offer in-room dining (aka room service)?

Be descriptive and specific. 

Give your readers a general idea of the cuisine and the ambiance of the place. 

Did the restaurant have unique or local items on the menu?

What did you order? How did it taste? Would you order it again? 

If you have any special diet restrictions, could the hotel restaurant accommodate you? Are there vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal, kosher options on the menu?

Was the service quick? 

Was there live entertainment at the restaurant? 

What’s your impression on the total bill? Highway robbery or too good to be true?

Thank the Staff

It is usually not the rooms nor the amenities that make a hotel stay a wonderful one or a horrible one. The ability to make you feel welcome, to care for your needs and requests, to provide effective and speedy resolution if something does go wrong, the smiles and attention… you may forget the colour of the wall, or the size of the bed, but you will never forget how the place made you feel.

During my university years I have worked at hotels in Toronto in both staff and management capacity. It is extremely hard to find and retain good people.

There is something special about people who work in hospitality. Most are not doing it for money: even with tips and benefits the money hospitality industry is paying is much lower than they could have gotten elsewhere. These are the people of passion, kind hearted, open-minded, fun and curious, they love to give and they love to care, they go above and beyond… and they want so very much to feel appreciated. Yet somehow, the smiles and service are silently expected, and if something goes wrong guests turn on them for a scapegoat.

When you are writing hotel reviews, the very least you could do to show your appreciation is to include a few lines about the fantastic service and say Thank You. 

TIP: Whenever someone goes above and beyond for our family, I take a note of their name into my mobile notebook to refer back in a few days or weeks when I am writing a hotel review. 

The One Unique Thing

In your hotel review tell you readers about one thing that you loved about the place most! It could be anything! 

Here are a few examples from our recent hotel reviews:

  • When staying at Kahana Sunset in Maui , we had a private beach with large sea turtles right at the beach! 
  • When staying at REO Rafting & Yoga Retreat in BC , the outdoor hot tub was the absolute hit after spending half a day in freezing water enjoying white water rafting.
  • When staying at Prestige Oceanfront Resort in Sooke, BC our son was enchanted and blown away by a family of sea lions living next to their pier and boat launch. And also the hotel room bathroom had a built-in TV – not quite common for rural countryside accommodations.. 

What was your one unique thing that you will keep telling everyone about?

Leave a Message to Manager

This is not a commonly used practice when writing hotel reviews, however we like to include a Message to Manager into all our reviews. From my personal experience working in the Hospitality industry for many years, I recognize that running a hotel is hard hard hard work. I use the Message to Manager section to show my appreciation, to highlight some of the things the brand did amazingly, and to provide recommendations for improvement in other areas. 

If you decide to include a Message to Manager section when you write your hotel review, keep it specific, factual, concise, but most importantly – keep it positive. 

Rate Your Experience

It is always a good idea to put things in perspective by applying some kind of a rating system to your experiences when writing hotel reviews. You can adopt commonly used 5-star or 10-star ratings or invent your own.

Here is how we rate:

We assign a rating to each review section – eg. location, room, food, etc. – and we also provide an overall stay rating at the very end.

In your hotel review conclusion answer the likely most important questions your readers have: 

  • Would you stay again at the hotel you are writing the review about? 
  • Would you recommend this hotel to your grandma or your best friend? 

Include photos! Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words.

TIP: it is always a good idea to confirm with the property if pictures are allowed in common areas, like the lobby or gym. Depending on where you are in the World, you might be surprised what is allowed and what is not.

If photos are allowed, try to make sure that there are no other people in, or that there are people whose faces are not recognizable.

It gets tricky when posting those photos to your own blog. If you are running ads on your post and getting income, the photos on the post are considered a commercial use. Depending on where you are in the world, you might need to collect consent of every person who is present in your photos and whose face can be recognized… Moreover, the “ right to be forgotten ” gives these people the right to ask you to put down your photos showing them. We like to avoid these situations, so we either explicitly ask before we take a photo, or we try to ensure others are not in our camera.

Regardless, your hotel review photos must be good quality and clear of noise. Add at least one photo per each list-item you are reviewing. If you have more than a few photos, I suggest you create a gallery to post at the end of your article, instead of adding all to your post as it could be too much!

Be Professional

Make sure that in writing a hotel review you sound as intelligent as possible and have your facts straight.

The least you want to do is misspell the property name, its restaurant name or the name of one of the staff. 

Proofread and double-proofread your review before posting. It is important that you use proper spelling and grammar if you want your readers to take you seriously, and the brand in question to be impressed. If anyone is going to read your review closely – that would be hotel management and, if they like it, they will share it with all their staff and partners and through their social media channels! It would absolutely suck to look foolish because of a few spelling errors.

How to Get Staff Names?

I always write the name of the staff down right then and there into my mobile notebook to refer back to it when writing a hotel review later. But I get it, sometimes things happen and you forget. So how do you track down that outstanding customer service example? 

Easy! Just ask!

Simply phone the hotel switchboard, ask about and confirm the proper name spelling. Say, something like: “ Hi, this and this waitress at the restaurant at breakfast absolutely made my day and I want to thank her. Tall skinny girl with long dark hair, she was maybe 20 or 25.. Can you please help me with the correct name spelling? ” Simple as that!

From my experience working in hospitality, even in larger properties everyone knows each other!

Send Heads-up!

Once the hotel review is posted on your blog, send a note to the hotel general manager and/or sales & marketing director. Get their name and work email from the switchboard, same as you did confirming the staff name!

In the email include a little blurb about who you are, the link to the hotel review post on your blog, and links to social media posts for quick and easy social sharing. (you are sharing your new posts on social media right away after publishing, don’t you? wink-wink) 

This little gesture of an email intro and links to your article can help establish a positive relationship and can help you work together in the future. For once, if the brand likes your review they may consider inviting you to stay at their other properties (comping your stay!) in exchange for more reviews. They may even include you into their regular marketing campaigns or make you their brand ambassador.

Oh, and the brand will send tons of traffic your way! They are likely to include the link to your blog into their employee newsletter, and may even link to if from their sales and marketing site. Having a professionally written hotel review from a travel influencer is a great opportunity to boast around the local hospitality industry “gang”. 

Then the domino effect happens: as the hospitality industry is a tight community (Yes, even in larger cities like Toronto hotel sales and marketing people all know each other!)  and the word will spread quickly – the hotel brand competitors may also want you to come write for them, you never know!

If you’re a beginner, do you suggest telling the hotel ahead of time that you will be writing a review? If so, should this be done before making the reservation, after making the reservation, or at check-in? Also, how should this be done?

there is no “golden rule”. all depends on what is your motivation. if you are pitching to trade a free night stay for a review, you must have a solid following/readership already. If you are “hoping” for free upgrade or nicer treatment, yet plan to stay at the place anyways, then at the time of making a reservation write a note saying that “by the way, I am a travel blogger, and here is my website/instagram/TripAdvisor account/TikTok/YouTube for you to check-out. I’ll be happy to write a review of my stay”. This is what we usually do, as we do not depend or strive to get a free pass on rooms and make our travel plans independently of a destination’s goodwill. Regardless of what you choose: have fun with it! and please BE FAIR. cheers, Alexandra

Writing About Resorts, Luxury Hotels and Lodges, Villas & Spas in Your Travel Stories

Writing about resorts, luxury hotels, lodges, villas and spas is a draw card for many travel writers. However, as many travel writers have discovered, stand-alone hotel stories are a hard sell. There are literally thousands of beautiful historic and boutique hotels, luxury resorts and villas, rustic lodges, and exotic spas, around the world. And while these great accommodations certainly seem worthy of publication in glossy travel magazines, few editors will run stories about them.

Why is writing about resorts and other luxury properties so popular? There’s a benefit, of course. If you play your cards right, you get complimentary stays at these luxury palaces, sometimes for several days. And you’re treated like a VIP with gift baskets, tours around the property, and often complimentary meals. Considering that lodging is one of the travel writer’s largest expenses, complimentary stays at hotels, resorts, lodges, and villas save you some serious coin. In fact, they’ve become a necessity for travel writers to survive. Hotel and resort media reps do not give these freebies out of the kindness of their hearts. They expect something from you. In return for providing you with complimentary lodging and meals, you’re expected to come up with assignments and write articles and posts that will publicize their properties.

Writing About Resorts: What Makes This Resort So Special?

Hotels and resorts are not stories — no matter how beautiful they are and how much you love them. You need to find something unique or interesting about each property. Writing about resorts, luxury hotels lodges and spas means you need to offer particularly interesting angles that will captivate the readers of print magazines and websites. To sell hotel/resort stories you need to ask, “What makes this hotel so special?” Is the property . . .

  • An historic building with some great tales to tell?
  • An historic castle with a rich legacy?
  • A renowned wedding destination?
  • The most luxurious hotel or resort in the area?
  • Over-the-top luxurious?
  • A romantic fall getaway lodge?
  • A retreat for the rich & famous?
  • Frequented by royalty?
  • Crawling with movie stars or VIPs every time you sit down in the hotel’s restaurant?
  • Famous for its world-class golf course?

You get the idea. Writing about resorts needs to be special or unique for editors to commission stories about them. But, don’t despair. Finding a unique hotel angle may not be as difficult as it seems. Some hotels have stories that absolutely jump out at savvy travel writers. So far, I’ve had 56 published travel articles that have featured hotels, resorts, villas, or lodges as the main theme. Sometimes the hotel was a secondary topic. I was able to devote a paragraph or two about the property into my travel stories as a place to stay or a kind of ‘honorable mention’. Here are a few of my most interesting hotel, resort, and lodge travel stories. While you’re reading through the list, notice what my unique angle was for each story:

My 28-day assignment in Bali, reviewing twelve high end luxury resorts and villas may well have been the high water mark of my travel writing career! Well, these were obviously ‘sexy’ resort stories, and were easy for me to sell. But, what if you're writing about a hotel that doesn't have enough ‘juice’ to merit a story in its own right? Have another look at my list above. When I'm writing about resorts or other luxury properties, I consider doing a group of them at a destination. You’ll notice that the first four articles are roundup pieces about several resorts and lodges in various regions. 

Hotel Roundup Stories Sell Well

You see, roundup stories about the finest resorts, villas, and lodges at a destination sell much easier than stories about a single property. You’ll have much better luck querying ‘collective’ stories than individual properties. You can use hotels as collateral for complimentary stays by listing them at the end of a general destination roundup story. These listings are usually in the ‘Where To Stay’ section. ‘Where to Stay’ listings will usually satisfy PR/media reps at hotels and resorts. I’ve stayed at some lovely hotels and B&Bs around the Puget Sound, Leavenworth, and Tri-Cities, in Washington State; Portland, Oregon; Bisbee and Tombstone, Arizona; Juneau, Haines, Fairbanks, Petersburg, and Ketchikan, Alaska; and Sacramento, California. This principle works just as well when I’m writing about resorts, hotels and spas internationally. It’s led to some of my most memorable stays ever. I’ve had great accommodations in Wales; and in Baden-Baden, Wiesbaden, Heidelberg, The Black Forest, Erfurt, Koblenz, and Berlin, Germany. In 2012, I was able to use hotel listings as collateral for comped stays in Rotorua, Queenstown, and Picton, during a trip to New Zealand. Two of my roundup travel stories required a listing of three hotels (budget, family and luxury) in each of those towns. Before I traveled to New Zealand, I did some homework on the hotels and resorts at these destinations. After locating suitable properties, I politely requested complimentary stays with the hotels on my list, and soon had my luxury accommodations covered at what turned out to be some spectacular properties. And these properties were always thrilled to receive the publicity when my stories were published.

Step-by-step Guide for Resort & Hotel Roundups

  • When writing about resorts, villas, luxury hotels and spas: if any of your articles have "Where to Stay" sections, you need to get busy emailing the hotels and resorts at your destination to request comps.
  • Track down the hotels via the Internet. And then send out a whole bunch of polite requests. Make sure you spell out exactly what the properties will get in terms of articles, mentions in “Where to Stay,” social media, blog posts, photos and videos. Make sure you specify exactly how many nights you are requesting at your target hotels. Be reasonable.
  • Send your request out to one or two dozen hotels and restaurants. Don’t hold back. There are always hotels for publicity that will be willing to work with you.

Writing About Resorts and Luxury Properties: Ethics and Comped Lodging

There are some unscrupulous travel writers. I know some journalists who flash their business card at the hotel’s front desk and announce they’re travel writers. They request a comped stay on the spot — and sometimes they get it. Unfortunately, many of these writers disappear into the sunset, never to be heard from again. They seldom produce a story about the hotel, or one that even mentions the hotel. And, if the truth be told, they probably never intended to write a story that mentioned the hotel. This practice is unethical. Travel writers who abuse a hotel’s trusting nature like this ruins things for the rest of us. Eventually, the hotel media reps become gun shy and decline travel writer’s requests for comped stays. Because some travel writers have worked the system like this, many hotel media reps who have been burned. They now ask for evidence of an assignment before they sign off on the writer’s comped stay. Fair enough. No assignment, no comped stay. Travel writers earn their comped stays by providing the property with some sort of agreed upon publicity. Quid pro quo. Don’t abuse the system. When writing about resorts, villas, luxury hotels and spas, always have an assignment or two, in advance, that will give the hotel primary or secondary coverage. Do this, and you’ll find other hotel doors opening for you. Cheat the hotels and you’ll find doors slamming shut.

The name of this business is Blue Hotel and Resort. The business is hotel-based but targets local and international tourists who are coming into the country all year round. The business will mostly be aimed at taking advantage and promoting local tourism, which has not been very much exploited because investors and the government have been concentrating on international tourists.

Type of Business

The business will be a partnership because it requires a large amount of capital which will be contributed by the partners. Investors will be included as partial owners of the business. A large amount of capital will be used to rent business premises at different localities and towns suited for local and international tourists’ attraction sites across the country, development of these apartments to suit the requirements and standards, and equipping of these hotels with necessities to carry out the business. The business will start by managing at least ten hotels at different places best-considered tourists sites across the country. Plans will include buying land and building hotel apartments to be owned by the hotel. This will enable a shift from rental to individually owned apartments.

Services and Products

The hotel will take care of all or most of the tourist’s needs while in the apartment and will provide food, beverages, snacks, and drinks for sale. Different services will include entertainment, gym, and sanitary services. The business services will include room rental services for local and international tourists taking long-term or short-term holidays. Transport services for both goods and people will also be available through business-owned vehicles. In addition, informational systems such as the internet will be made available to the tourists once in the apartments to connect with their businesses and families. All these services will be paid for separately according to the usage by the individual. Tourists shall also be assisted to access various services such as those offered by the government officials and goods according to their requests for the necessary possible arrangements. The business services and products will thus be made as affordable and known to the locals as possible as compared to the competitors’. In addition, the products and services will be modified over time to suit the locals as well as ensure a diversity of products and services to suit the international tourists.

The role of accounting in this business is important since it will ensure that careful planning of the available investment funds is possible. Careful planning will ensure that the business not only achieves its goals and objectives but that these goals and objectives are practically aligned to the excelling of the business through the making of profits. Any person entering a business should have a professional level of budgeting, internal controls, and cash management before entering business since the excellence of any business will partly be determined by these components. Professional budgeting and cash management will ensure that the businessman allocates properly the available resources to various components of the business to maximize profits while minimizing the expenses. Internal control systems are important in mitigating against risks, threats, and vulnerability of the business, and managers need to be aware of the systems that are important in safeguarding the business assets against losses, compliance with the laws, recording and accounting of revenues and expenditures, and maintenance of the accounting records among other issues (Internal Controls, n.d.). In addition to making sure that the staff are competent, supportive attitudes by managers towards the internal controls, identification of the logical and applicable and reasonable control objectives and adoption of effective and efficient control techniques, there will be clear documentation of all events and activities in accounting and transactions, separation of duties of staff and access and accountability to resources in the business (Internal Controls, n.d.). Investment in the hotel industry would be expected to face such risks like fear for domestic and international terrorism, which means that security for the people is important. The hotel shall invest in intelligent services up to capability or work with the government to minimize risks related to security. Managers will review financial information provided by the accounting staff and use it to estimate future results of current investment plans as well as make appropriate adjustments, make future investment decisions in the growing sectors of the business, estimate future financial positions as well as control excessive expenditure. Accounting will ensure the identification of challenges to achieving the goals and objectives and making sure that the organization’s funds are properly allocated to counter these challenges.

To inspire you and help you write your next trip essay—whether it’s an essay about a trip with family or simply a way to remember your best trip ever (so far)—we enlisted the help of Professor Kathleen Boardman, whose decades of teaching have helped many college students learn the fine art of autobiography and life writing. Here’s advice on how to turn a simple “my best trip” essay into a story that will inspire others to explore the world.

Welcome home! Now that you’re back from your trip, you’d like to share it with others in a travel essay. You’re a good writer and a good editor of your work, but you’ve never tried travel writing before. As your potential reader, I have some advice and some requests for you as you write your travel experience essay.

Trip Essays: What to Avoid

Please don’t tell me everything about your trip. I don’t want to know your travel schedule or the names of all the castles or restaurants you visited. I don’t care about the plane trip that got you there (unless, of course, that trip is the story).

I have a friend who, when I return from a trip, never asks me, “How was your trip?” She knows that I would give her a long, rambling answer: “… and then … and then … and then.” So instead, she says, “Tell me about one thing that really stood out for you.” That’s what I’d like you to do in this travel essay you’re writing.

The Power of Compelling Scenes

One or two “snapshots” are enough—but make them great. Many good writers jump right into the middle of their account with a vivid written “snapshot” of an important scene. Then, having aroused their readers’ interest or curiosity, they fill in the story or background. I think this technique works great for travel writing; at least, I would rather enjoy a vivid snapshot than read through a day-to-day summary of somebody’s travel journal.

Write About a Trip Using Vivid Descriptions

Take your time. Tell a story. So what if you saw things that were “incredible,” did things that were “amazing,” observed actions that you thought “weird”? These words don’t mean anything to me unless you show me, in a story or a vivid description, the experience that made you want to use those adjectives.

I’d like to see the place, the people, or the journey through your eyes, not someone else’s. Please don’t rewrite someone else’s account of visiting the place. Please don’t try to imitate a travel guide or travelogue or someone’s blog or Facebook entry. You are not writing a real travel essay unless you are describing, as clearly and honestly as possible, yourself in the place you visited. What did you see, hear, taste, say? Don’t worry if your “take” on your experience doesn’t match what everyone else says about it. (I’ve already read what THEY have to say.)

The Importance of Self-Editing Your Trip Essay

Don’t give me your first draft to read. Instead, set it aside and then reread it. Reread it again. Where might I need more explanation? What parts of your account are likely to confuse me? (After all, I wasn’t there.) Where might you be wasting my time by repeating or rambling on about something you’ve already told me?

Make me feel, make me laugh, help me learn something. But don’t overdo it: Please don’t preach to me about broadening my horizons or understanding other cultures. Instead, let me in on your feelings, your change of heart and mind, even your fear and uncertainty, as you confronted something you’d never experienced before. If you can, surprise me with something I didn’t know or couldn’t have suspected.

I hope you will take yourself seriously as a traveler and as a writer. Through what—and how—you write about just a small portion of your travel experience, show me that you are an interesting, thoughtful, observant person. I will come back to you, begging for more of your travel essays.
