Balagam Movie Review: A beautiful exploration of culture and human condition

Having watched films like  Karnan, Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana , and  Angamaly Diaries,  I have always yearned for Telugu films to portray and celebrate our culture. My wish has been fulfilled with  Balagam.  It not only represents the customs of Telangana authentically but is entirely centred on the culture.

For instance, we know that the interval point of any film is utilised to pronounce the central conflict of the story, and in  Balagam , the interval point is built around the custom of offering a feast to the soul of the dead. When a crow doesn’t eat it, it is believed that the dead are yet to find peace, and naturally, it’s not considered to be a good sign. So the family of the deceased patriarch, Komurayya (Sudhakar Reddy, a wonderful find), make the offering and wait for a crow to come down and have it. When it doesn't happen, it creates emotional unrest--backed by quarrels in the past and egos--among them. And this conflict around the tradition transforms into the film's core narrative; on one level, it is about the custom and on another level, it is about the people harbouring custom. 

Balagam  even looks at these people through the lenses of culture, their egos, and flaws. That apart, their personalities stand as reflections of their responses to everything that happens at a funeral. The detailed portrayal is astounding. Also, the song that captures the last rites of Komurayya, which begins as a celebration and ends in mourning, is effectively shot.

Two characters at opposing end challenge to throw a bigger feast than the other. The bigger the feast, the larger the number of goats required. Minutes into the film, we get a fair idea about the jaunty Komurayya as he nonchalantly goes on with his day, flirting with women of different ages and interacting with the members of the close-knit community of his village. 

The following scene sets up the sturdy character of Komurayya’s angry elder son Aillayya (Jayram, again, great find) and then his grandson, the ambitious yet unsuccessful Sayilu (a perfectly cast Priyadarshi). Many of Sayilu’s business plans have failed. His external conflict is to repay the load. And even when he learns about his grandfather’s untimely demise, he is more concerned about the possible delay of the engagement with his girlfriend and, consequently, receiving the dowry money. The internal conflict is that he is selfishly materialistic at times of great loss. The moment he realises his selfishness and wrongdoings is heart-wrenching, and Priyadarshi has effectively portrayed the role. 

One of the fascinating aspects of the film is that almost everyone here is grey, but it doesn’t manipulate you to hate or empathise with any particular character. In fact, it only rightly calls them out for their mistakes and misplaced priorities. 

Despite the despair in its atmosphere—considering the story takes place in a span of 11 days through a funeral—the film finds humour in many odd ways. From a woman crying persistently to another woman feigning sadness, many such rooted instances show the filmmaker drawing inspiration from lived-in experiences.

Balagam is not infallible, though, and it comes with its own set of flaws. The screenplay gets stuck in a tedium of repetitive scenes towards the end. Likewise, when Sayilu breaks into a dance in the otherwise fun  ‘Potti Pilla’ , you wonder why this character that has been so realistic until that point is suddenly behaving like he’s in a Telugu film. However, it lasts only a short while. This reminds me of a beautiful line in the song that goes,  ‘Kallulotti pakkana kaarappoosa lekka mana jodi mastuntade  (Our pairing is as good as a spicy  sev  and palm wine)’. The film’s love for the lifestyle it portrays keeps popping up in distinct ways. 

The film also doesn't try to get too inventive with its craft, with the staging and cinematography, despite running the risk of being called too simplistic, serve the story well, although I wish it had played more with the visuals instead of relying much on the dialogues. Meanwhile, the dialogues are the lifeline of the film and they do a wonderful job capturing the life of the Telangana region. 

While Venu Yeldandi paints a beautiful portrait, it’s Bheems Ceciroleo who gives it life with his music. Especially, his collaboration with folk musicians for one particular music piece that sums up the entirety of the film and the character arcs, in the end, is noteworthy. This sequence represents the confluence of two of  Balagam ’s traits: its urge to preach the importance of relationships and its love for the Telangana culture. And one shot in which we see the hands of this family placed one above the other, as they reach the final stage of the funeral, will be etched in my memory for a long time. It is the image  Balagam  stood for.

What’s it about!

Despite his advanced age, Komarayya (Ketiri Sudhakar Reddy), a family patriarch in a Telangana village, retains vigour and enthusiasm. He is very excited about his grandson’s upcoming wedding. His grandson (Priyadarshi) accumulates debts as a result of his poor business decisions, and when he marries a girl, he hopes to pay them off with dowry money.

Komarayya dies as Sai’s engagement ceremony approaches. His death not only thwarts Sai’s plans, but also exposes the issues his family is dealing with.

The family, as is customary, performs a ritual of “pittaku pettadam” or “pindam” to the departed soul. Crows, on the other hand, do not taste a single piece of pindam, leaving the family members in agony. What would they do if they wanted to please the crows? Or what steps they take to ensure the departed soul’s peace.

The Telugu word “Balagam” refers to one’s kith and kin. Venu Yeldandi’s debut directorial effort “Balagam” discusses the importance of family unity, but this isn’t your typical family drama. One would expect this from a film produced by Dil Raju, who is known for making family films. However, director Venu uses “Chaavu” (death) as a device to emphasise the importance of family unity.

“Rajadhani Nagaramlo Chavu Kooda Pelli Lantide Brother (In cities, even death is celebrated like a marriage),” wrote poet Acharya Athreya in one song. However, there is a tradition in Telangana, particularly in rural areas, of celebrating death with numerous rituals. For 11 days, most non-vegetarian families observe numerous rituals, including serving mutton and alcohol to close relatives for dinner (the more goats are butchered more the rich you are).

On the third day after a death, it is customary to leave out food for the dead and watch as crows pick at it (crows are regarded the departed soul). This is the pivot around which the plot revolves.

Director Venu uses many devices from the genre of dark comedy in his telling of this story. Although the film’s lighter moments can be found in its early stages, the real meat of the drama occurs in the film’s closing minutes. In fact, the romantic thread is not at all effective. Despite the climax being overly melodramatic, Venu’s handling of certain scenes in the second half are touching. Especially, the song in the end is terrific.

What I liked most about “Balagam” was not the family drama but rather the depiction of the different aspects of death in the villages of Telangana, such as the play of Oggu Katha performed to keep family members awake until the funeral was completed and a singing troupe (Budaga Jangala) that extolled the deceased. The changes in the family dynamic after the death of the patriarch are also realistically depicted.

On the downside, the film needed to be concise and deletion of repetitive sequences.

Plus, the film has shades of Raam Reddy’s acclaimed Kannada film, Thithi.

Priyadarshi does a good job of conveying the naiveté of rural youth. Kavya Kalyanram holds up fine. All three of the actors—Ketiri Sudhakar Reddy as Komarayya, Roopa Lakshmi as Komarayya’s daughter, and Muralidhar Goud as her husband—have given very realistic portrayals.

Bheems’s music accentuates the mood. In fact, his songs are the backbone. The camera captures rural life quietly and without being flashy. Director Venu deserves praise for keeping things as authentic as they could be in this telling of the story.

Bottom-line:  With death as its foundation, the story of ‘Balagam’ tells the importance of family unity through its resonant theme and believable characters. The frank depiction of funeral rites and the dry wit are both effective. Director Venu’s attempt to tell an unconventional tale comes with some caveats, including overly melodramatic moments and a lengthy running time.

Priyadarshi might have proved as a good comedian and co-actor. He is also juggling the lead roles in films and web series.His Mallesham (2019) and Loser series have garnered critical acclaim. After a hiatus, he returned to the lead role with a small-budgeted film Balagam. The film helmed by Venu Yeldandi is bankrolled by Dil Raju Productions. For these reasons, the film garnered some attention. Let’s check out what the film offers.

Story Set in a rural milieu, old man Komarayya (Sudhakar Reddy), happy-go-lucky man, is ecstatic about the wedding of his grandson Saayilu (Priyadarshi). Saayilu’s failed businesses push him into debts and he pins high hopes on dowry. Komarayya dies suddenly, thus affecting Saayilu’s plans. But this brings out the underlying family differences between Komarayya’s children. What forms the rest is how the disputes are resolved and how Komaraiah gets a peaceful bid adieu. Who is Sandhya (Kavya Kalyanram) and how she aids Saayilu.

Performances

Priyadarshi knows best what works for him. He chooses an underdog role of Saayilu and he sticks to the character. We see Saayilu and his struggles on screen, but not Priyadarshi. Kavya Kalyanram got a decent role and she pulled it off. Sudhakar Reddy as Komarayya is perfect. The whole story revolves around his character. Jayaram as Komarayya’s elder son Ailayya has an attitude and he portrayed it aptly. Muralidhar Goud of DJ Tillu fame shines as Narayana, brother-in-law of Ailayya and heroine’s father. He has an important role and he does justice. Roopa as Komarayya’s daughter Lakshmi fills her spot. Comedian Racha Ravi brings some relief with laughter in this rather serious and emotional family drama. The film’s supporting cast performed ably.

Technicalities At outset, Balagam has a very thin point. However, this thin line is weaved into a family drama with emotions and occasional humour. Scenes with depth have worked. Good writing and decent making worked for the film. Debutante director Venu did a decent job. Bheems’ music is perfect for the film. The visuals of rural Telangana were well captured, kudos to cinematographer Acharya Venu.

Drawbacks Thin Storyline Slow First Half Weak Love Track

Balagam is not a unique or untold story. It is a regular sight in households in villages. The family emotions are not unheard of. Many films in the past have explored similar the concept of family drama, sentiment and death of the family patriarch. The manner in which it is told and narrated in Balagam makes all the difference. The strength of the film lies in showcasing the art and culture of Telangana. The rural atmosphere in the film is an exact replica of the real-life. In addition to this, the writing is neat and to-the-point with no-nonsense. The makers have opted for a simple and honest film without any deviations from the main story. While debutante director Venu took a chunk of the time in establishing the characters of the film and their every-day life, the film goes in a slow pace and familiar path in the first-half.

However, post-interval, the film’s narration gains momentum. The scenes are decently written with strong emotion. This is what worked for the film in parts. The second-half has many moments that touch one’s hearts. Particularly, there is a scene in pre-climax where Priyadarshi breaks down remembering his loving grandfather and realises how he was ignorant of him so far and how he was selfishly using his grandfather’s death. All these are subtle and yet so impactful. The depth in the scenes are really appreciable. Technically, the film is decent. Drone shots of the village are shot well. Folk songs like Ooru Palleturu, Potti Pilla and Balarama Narasayyo add to the authenticity of Telangana culture. This may not be a film with commercial ingredients that limits the film in theatre format.

Like any movie, this too has its share of shortcomings. There are some cinematic liberties too. The money lender of Saayilu who is portrayed as ruthless and emotionless crook goes absent in crucial portions. This track is half-baked. Even Saayilu’s failed marriage and his love track with his Maradalu Sandhya leaves us craving for more. The reason for the marriage call off could be better and more significant. These are not addressed properly.

Despite a handful of such errors, Balagam’s strong family emotion, solid performances of the cast and good scenes make it a watchable film. The film has a message of unity. There are some takeaways from the film for everyone who admire family. Rural movies like these come occasionally in Telugu whereas we see such experiment attempts in Malayalam often. Despite knowing the limitations, the producer and director have the guts to make such an attempt locally that deserves special mention. Overall, Balagam is an emotional family drama with its heart in the right place.

A small-budget film named Balagam starring Priyadarshi and Kavya Kalyanram in the lead roles gained decent buzz of late. Directed by comedian Venu Yeldandi, the movie is backed by Dil Raju. The film hit the screens today, and let’s find out how it is.

Set in the interior of Telangana, Balagam revolves around the feud between Ailayya (Jayaram) and Narayana (Muralidhar Goud) families. Saailu (Priyadarshi), a youngster, tries his hand at every business but fails to achieve success. Saailu decides to marry so that he can set off the dowry amount against his debt and escape the wrath of moneylenders. Much to Saailu’s shock, his grandfather Komurayya dies, and during the older man’s final rites, Saailu’s marriage gets canceled due to a petty argument. What did Saailu do then? Did he clear his debt? How is Sandhya (Kavya Kalyanram) related to this story? What’s the reason for wrangling between the two families? Watch the film to know the answers.

Plus Points:

One doesn’t feel like watching a film for the whole 131 minutes. Such is the beauty of Balagam. Everything looks completely natural, and the film has a lot of relatability. Be it the village environment, the artists’ body language, the petty quarrels that take place in villages, or the innocence of villagers, everything looks damn realistic, which makes the audience easily connect to the film. The characters are so real who we see in our daily lives.

The idea of exploring human values and emotions and linking them to the death of a person is superb. Recently Rajendra Prasad’s Anukoni Prayanam also came along similar lines. What works with Balagam is the genuine presentation of emotions without any cinematic liberties. Healthy and situational humor will surely bring a big smile to faces. The emotions take center stage in the second hour and are sure to touch the heartstrings.

The director’s idea to tell the story through the usage of folklore songs is brilliant. The Telangana culture is neatly presented throughout, and the customs and traditions are made an integral part of the story. Priyadarshi and Kavya Kalyanram lived in their roles, and it is good that the artists have chosen a heartwarming subject at such a young age.

Director Venu and Racha Ravi are adequate in their roles. Racha Ravi’s scene with Priyadarshi in the second half is hilarious. The casting was on point, and everyone did a fantastic job in the film. Every actor got the Telangana dialect right, and the emotions got conveyed nicely due to the presence of amazing artists. Muralidhar Goud, Roopa, and Jayaram stand out among the supporting cast. The climax portions are brilliantly executed and heart-wrenching.

Minus Points:

More time is taken for the character establishments initially, and this aspect could have been taken care of. The first hour moves at a slow pace, and the proceedings gather momentum only from the interval portions.

Balagam surely is not for those who look for time-pass flicks. There is a lot of honesty in the storytelling, and the film doesn’t have any commercial ingredients as such, which is expected by a section of the audience. The editing could have been better in the first hour.

Technical Aspects:

Bheem Ceciroleo will surprise one and all with his music, and he proved with Balagam that he is just not meant for mass beats. A lot of detailing has gone into the songs representing the customs and traditions. The cinematography by Acharya Venu is authentic, showing the beautiful countryside. The production values are good. The editing is just okay. It is great to see makers backing a film like Balagam believing in the plot.

Special applause to Venu Yeldandi, the director turned comedian, for penning such a heartwarming story and mixing it with the rural heartland. Many scenes show the directorial skills of Venu. The elongated single-shot sequences, kids asking permission to watch television to eliminate boredom amidst 11-day rituals, and the altercation between the legal heirs for their share of property during extreme distress are a few examples to depict the writer in Venu.

The belief that the soul doesn’t attain liberty when crows deny the offering for Shradh is widely known to everyone, and Venu used this point in three different instances to enhance the drama. This worked pretty well for the film. It’s a rarity to see films where the story is given major importance. Balagam is such one flick where the concentration was entirely on storytelling sans any unwanted masala.

On the whole, Balagam is a genuine attempt to explore human values and emotions that is devoid of any commercial ingredients. The film’s trump cards are the natural village atmosphere, heartwarming performances, and gratifying emotional sequences. As mentioned earlier, the film might not sit well with a section of the audience. Barring the slightly slow first half, this film can be watched on big screens this weekend.

న‌టులు ద‌ర్శ‌కులు కావ‌డం కొత్తేమీ కాదు.  హాస్య న‌టుడిగా సినిమాపైనా... బుల్లితెర‌పైనా త‌న‌దైన ముద్ర వేసిన వేణు టిల్లు కొత్త‌గా ఆ జాబితాలోకి చేరారు. ఆయ‌న మెగాఫోన్ ప‌ట్ట‌డం ఓ ప్ర‌త్యేక‌త అయితే... ఆయ‌న సినిమా ప్ర‌ముఖ నిర్మాత దిల్‌రాజు కాంపౌండ్‌లో రూపొంద‌డం మ‌రో విశేషం. దిల్‌రాజు కుటుంబానికి చెందిన రెండో త‌రం హ‌న్షిత‌, హ‌ర్షిత్ రెడ్డి ఈ సినిమాని నిర్మించారు. తార‌లు లేక‌పోయినా ఈ సినిమాకి త‌గిన స్థాయిలో ప్ర‌చారం ల‌భించిందంటే దిల్‌రాజు వెన‌క ఉండ‌ట‌మే కార‌ణం. (Balagam Review) విడుద‌ల‌కి ముందే ప‌లు చోట్ల ప్ర‌త్యేక ప్ర‌ద‌ర్శ‌న‌లు వేసి సినిమాకి మ‌రింత‌గా ప్ర‌చారం చేశారు.  మ‌రి ఈ సినిమా ఎలా ఉంది?ఇంతకీ బలగం కథేంటి?

క‌థేంటంటే: తెలంగాణలోని ఓ మారుమూల ప‌ల్లెలో జ‌రిగే క‌థ ఇది. సాయిలు (ప్రియ‌ద‌ర్శి) ఓ నిరుద్యోగి.  ఉపాధి కోస‌మ‌ని ర‌క‌ర‌కాల ప్ర‌య‌త్నాలు చేస్తుంటాడు. ల‌క్ష‌లు అప్పు చేసి ఊళ్లో ఓ స్నూక‌ర్ బోర్డ్ పెడ‌తాడు. అది అత‌ని క‌ష్టాల్ని ఏమాత్రం గ‌ట్టెక్కించ‌క‌పోగా, అప్పుల ఒత్తిళ్లు అధిక‌మ‌వుతాయి. పెళ్లి చేసుకుంటే వ‌చ్చే క‌ట్నంతో అప్పులు తీర్చుకోవడ‌మే  త‌న ముందున్న ఏకైక మార్గంగా భావిస్తాడు.  పెళ్లి కూడా కుద‌ర‌డంతో అప్పుల వాళ్ల‌కి అదే విష‌యం చెబుతాడు. ఒక‌ప‌క్క నిశ్చితార్థం ప‌నులు జ‌రుగుతుండ‌గానే, తాత కొముర‌య్య చ‌నిపోతాడు. అది చాల‌ద‌న్న‌ట్టుగా  చావు ఇంట్లో మాటా మాటా పెరిగి కుదిరిన ఆ పెళ్లి కూడా పెటాకుల‌వుతుంది. దాంతో సాయిలు క‌ష్టాలు రెట్టింప‌వుతాయి. తాత మ‌ర‌ణంతో సూర‌త్‌లో ఉన్న బాబాయ్‌,  ఎప్పుడో ఇర‌వ‌య్యేళ్ల కింద‌ట దూర‌మైన మేన‌త్త‌, మేన‌మామ, వాళ్ల కూతురు సంధ్య (కావ్య క‌ళ్యాణ్‌రామ్‌) రావ‌డంతో ఒక‌ప‌క్క వాళ్ల మంచి చెడులు చూసుకుంటూనే తాత అంతిమ సంస్కారాలు పూర్తి చేస్తాడు సాయిలు. కానీ ఆ త‌ర్వాతే అస‌లు క‌ష్టాలు మొద‌ల‌వుతాయి. (Balagam Review) చిన్న క‌ర్మ రోజున పెట్టిన పిండం తినేందుకు ఒక్క కాకి కూడా రాదు. దాంతో  కొముర‌య్య కొడుకు, అల్లుడు మ‌ధ్య గొడ‌వ మొద‌ల‌వుతుంది.  ఐదో రోజైనా కాకులొస్తాయ‌నుకుంటే ఆ రోజు కూడా అదే ప‌రిస్థితి.  దాంతో ఇంట్లో గొడ‌వ‌లు మ‌రింత‌గా ముదిరిపోతాయి. తాత మ‌న‌సులో బాధ ఉండ‌టంతోనే కాకులు రావ‌డం లేద‌ని, ఇది ఊరికే అరిష్టం అని పంచాయ‌తీలో పెద్ద‌లు తేలుస్తారు. పెద్ద క‌ర్మ అయిన ప‌ద‌కొండో రోజున  ఏం జ‌రిగింది?  ఆ రోజైనా కాకులొచ్చి పిండాన్ని తిన్నాయా?  కుటుంబ స‌భ్యుల మ‌ధ్య గొడ‌వ‌లు స‌ద్దుమ‌ణిగాయా?  సాయిలు క‌ష్టాలు తీరాయా ? అనేది మిగ‌తా క‌థ‌.

ఎలా ఉందంటే: ఓ ఇంటి పెద్ద మ‌ర‌ణం చుట్టూ సాగే ఓ కుటుంబ క‌థ ఇది. మన కుటుంబ అనుబంధాల్లోని బ‌లాన్ని.. న‌మ్మ‌కాల్ని, ఆచారాల్ని అత్యంత స‌హజంగా ఆవిష్క‌రిస్తుంది. మ‌నదైన సంస్కృతి, మూలాల్లోనే మ‌న‌సుల్ని స్పృశించే ఎన్నో క‌థ‌లున్నాయ‌ని ఈ చిత్రం మ‌రోసారి చాటి చెబుతుంది. తెలంగాణ‌లోని చావు చుట్టూ జ‌రిగే తతంగాన్ని ప‌క్కాగా  ఆవిష్క‌రిస్తూనే, ఓ కుటుంబంలోని సంఘ‌ర్ష‌ణ‌ని అంద‌రికీ క‌నెక్ట్ అయ్యేలా సినిమాని తెర‌కెక్కించారు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు.  తెలంగాణ ప‌ల్లె జీవితాల్ని చూపెడుతూ క‌థ మొద‌ల‌వుతుంది. ఆ జీవితాల్లోని స్వ‌చ్ఛ‌త‌, మ‌నుషుల్లోని అమాయ‌క‌త్వం, వాళ్ల‌లోని భాష‌, యాస, వెట‌కారం... నిమిషాల్లోనే కథా ప్ర‌పంచంలో లీనం చేస్తుంది.  (Balagam Review) చావు ద‌గ్గ‌ర కొద్దిమంది స్పందించే తీరుని చూపెడుతూ న‌వ్వించిన ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు, ఆ త‌ర్వాత భావోద్వేగాల‌పై దృష్టిపెట్టాడు. ఇర‌వ‌య్యేళ్ల కింద‌ట ఏం జ‌రిగిందో, చిన్న చిన్న విష‌యాలే మ‌నుషుల్ని ఎలా దూరం చేశాయో, ఇద్ద‌రి మ‌ధ్య  అహం కుటుంబాల్లో ఎలాంటి సంఘ‌ర్ష‌ణ‌కి దారితీసిందో ద్వితీయార్ధంలో ఆస‌క్తిక‌రంగా చూపించారు. తెలంగాణ సంస్కృతిలో కీల‌క‌మైన జాన‌ప‌దాల్ని, ఒగ్గు క‌థ‌ల్ని ఈ సినిమాలో వాడిన విధానం ఆక‌ట్టుకుంటుంది. ప‌తాక స‌న్నివేశాల్లో అన్నా-చెల్లెళ్ల మ‌ధ్య అనుబంధాన్ని, కుటుంబం నేప‌థ్యంలో  భావోద్వేగాల్ని ఆవిష్క‌రించ‌డంలో ఆ పాట‌లే కీల‌క‌పాత్ర పోషిస్తాయి. నేప‌థ్య‌మే ఈ సినిమాకి ప్ర‌ధాన‌బ‌లం. (Balagam Review) క‌థ‌, పాత్ర‌, భాష‌ల్లోని స‌హ‌జ‌త్వం ప్ర‌తి స‌న్నివేశానికీ ఓ ప్ర‌త్యేక‌మైన అందాన్ని తీసుకొచ్చింది.  క‌థంతా ఓ ఇల్లు, చావు చుట్టూనే సాగ‌డంతో అక్క‌డ‌క్క‌డా సాగ‌దీత‌గా అనిపిస్తుంది. ద్వితీయార్ధంలో భావోద్వేగాలు పండినా  క‌థ‌, క‌థ‌నాల గ‌మ్యం ప్రేక్ష‌కుడి ఊహ‌కు అందేలా సాగ‌డం సినిమాకి మైన‌స్‌.  మ‌న ద‌గ్గ‌ర సినిమా అన‌గానే వాణిజ్యాంశాల ప్ర‌స్తావ‌న వ‌స్తుంది. ఇలాంటి ప‌రిస్థితుల మ‌ధ్య  కేవ‌లం ఓ చావు చుట్టూ సాగే క‌థ‌ని న‌మ్మి సినిమా చేసిన నిర్మాత‌ల అభిరుచి మెచ్చుకోద‌గ్గ‌ది. 

ఎవ‌రెలా చేశారంటే: సినిమాలో  హీరో హీరోయిన్లంటూ ప్ర‌త్యేకంగా ఎవ్వ‌రూ క‌నిపించ‌రు. ప్ర‌తి పాత్రకీ ప్రాధాన్యం ఉంటుంది. ర‌చ‌న‌లోని బ‌ల‌మే అది. ప్రియ‌ద‌ర్శి, అత‌ని మిత్ర‌బృందంతో క‌లిసి న‌వ్విస్తాడు. ప‌తాక స‌న్నివేశాల్లో తాత‌ని గుర్తు చేసుకునే స‌న్నివేశంతో భావోద్వేగాల్ని పంచుతాడు. తాత కొముర‌య్య‌, కొడుకు ఐల‌య్య‌, త‌మ్ముడు, చెల్లెలు, బావ నారాయ‌ణ పాత్ర‌లు ఆక‌ట్టుకుంటాయి. ఆయా పాత్రలకి త‌గ్గ‌ట్టుగా కొత్త న‌టుల్ని ఎంచుకోవ‌డం బాగుంది. సాంకేతిక విభాగాల్లో సంగీతం, కెమెరా విభాగాలుచ‌క్క‌టి ప‌నితీరుని క‌న‌బ‌రిచాయి. (Balagam Review) ఆరంభం నుంచి చివ‌రి స‌న్నివేశం వ‌ర‌కూ పాట‌లే ఈ సినిమాకి ప్ర‌ధాన ఆక‌ర్ష‌ణ‌గా నిలిచాయి. కాస‌ర్ల శ్యామ్ ర‌చించిన గీతాలు సంద‌ర్భోచితంగా వినిపిస్తూ క‌థ‌ని ముందుకు తీసుకెళ్లాయి. భీమ్స్  బాణీల్లో మ‌ట్టిప‌రిమ‌ళం గుభాళిస్తుంది. తెలంగాణ ప‌ల్లెటూరిని కెమెరా అందంగా ఆవిష్క‌రించింది. ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు వేణు నిజాయ‌తీగా ఓ క‌థ రాసుకుని, దాన్ని అంతే  స్ప‌ష్ట‌త‌తో తెర‌పైకి తీసుకొచ్చాడు.  నిర్మాణం బాగుంది. దిల్‌రాజు సంస్థ నుంచి  ఇలాంటి మూలాలున్న క‌థ రావ‌డం చిత్ర‌సీమ‌కి ఓ మంచి సంకేతం.

Balagam movie review - this drama gives us a reality check.

'Balagam' hits the cinemas this Friday (March 3). Here is our review of the movie.

The film is set in a Telangana village. The time is present. Komarayya (Sudhakar Reddy), an old man, breathes his last three days before the engagement of his grandson Sailu (Priyadarshi). Now, Sailu is hard-pressed for money. He has to urgently clear loans to the tune of Rs 10 lakh and, for that, he needs dowry money. Komarayya's untimely demise puts his engagement in danger. Without getting engaged, he won't receive the dowry money.

Komarayya's death also brings in its wake a host of troubles in the family. Sailu's father and his estranged sister's husband have their own set of problems with each other. Will the old man's death mean anything to this wounded family where strained relations reign supreme?

Post-Mortem:

"Specific form of joint family arrangement (brothers along with their spouses and kids living under the authority of parents in the same home and common kitchen) is the ultimate killer of mental peace. It breeds jealousy, unnecessary feuds and incessant rivalry over petty reasons," a Twitter user named Satish Verma tweeted recently. Ever since this reviewer read the truth bomb, it got him thinking about the sociological implications of the Indian family system. Although joint families have technically been fading, emotionally, they are still alive in India. We may not live under one roof, but our emotional bonds are joined. 'Balagam', the film under review, proves this social reality beyond doubt. Importantly, it doesn't do so without getting preachy.

Directed by debutant Venu Yeldandi (he is better known as Venu Tillu, the comedian), 'Balagam' rises above conventional script-writing rules by doing away with the need for a lead pair, a love track, and other run-of-the-mill norms. Priyadarshi appears to be a lead man at first, but he later becomes a supporting actor.

Characters are money-minded or naive or just plain loud. The death of the patriarch results in performative death rituals. The women cry the way they cry because everyone cries that way in their villages. Some of them are least bothered about Komarayya. They are there to show solidarity with his closest family members. You find all this funny up to a point. After a point, you like that the neighbours are there to show empathy. In today's times when human selfishness has reached pathological levels, even this much should deserve our respect. See, the bar is too low!

The conversations between some family members, who are seeing eye-to-eye for the first time in years, are realistic and occasionally funny as well. Director Venu, who has also written the movie, doesn't resort to bland speeches. There are no speeches that transform the equations between family members in a jiffy because there is no hero in the film. This is no 'Shatamanam Bhavati'.

The attempt to make 'Balagam' a musical drama is praiseworthy. 'Balarama Narasayyo', composed by Ram Miryala, is about celebrating the death of Komarayya. Despite the film-style music, the visuals and the artists manage to make things look natural. The first song is a tribute to village life, sung with gusto by Mangli.

The character played by Kavya Kalyanram of 'Masooda' fame is slightly milked to offer escapist entertainment. However, as the story progresses, we realize that the direction of the story is something else. The pathos song in the finale is heart-rending.

On the flip side, the emotional arc of Priyadarshi 's character could have been handled in a better way. At 131 minutes, the film slows down in the middle portions.

Closing Remarks

'Balagam' is a village-based drama with no hero or heroine as such. Watch it for its delicacies and the truth bombs it delivers. The message that it is better to rein in petty egos than be sorry is profound.

The music is composed by Bheems Ceciroleo and the movie is produced by Dil Raju, Harshith Reddy & Hanshitha Reddy under Dil Raju Productions banner.

The film is about a rooted Telangana family and the problems which happen inside the family. Sai (Priyadarshi) is a normal young guy who does various businesses in his village to earn a living. One day, his grandfather Komaraiah (Sudhakar Reddy) dies all of a sudden and all the family members come together for Komaraiah’s last rites. This will raise up the past ego issues, which are still going around with the family members. What are those issues? How will the grandfather’s death unite the family? Needs to be seen in the film.

What about on-screen performances?

Priyadarshi gives out an honest performance. He is obviously good with his comedy timing and this time, he impresses with his emotional angle as well. The way he portrayed the little innocence in his characters is commendable, and this adds great value to this particular role.

Kavya Kalyanram does a pretty decent job in her role as the hero’s love interest. Sudhakar Reddy is excellent as the grandfather. His character is the backbone of the film and he does full justice to it. All the family members and supporting cast in the film are superb with their respective roles & performances.

What about off-screen talents?

The story by Venu is very rooted and has the right amount of emotional value, which is needed for a plot like this. If you’re someone from a rural Telangana village, then you will definitely love this film. The screenplay has its share of up & downs. There are a few flat scenes and stretched-out scenes in the middle portions. The comedy works in bits & pieces and the climax emotions will hit us hard.

Special mention to the dialogue writers & lyric writers of the film. The music and songs by Bheems Ceciroleo are one of the biggest strengths of the film. The background score is neat too. The camera work by Acharya Venu is splendid. The edit by Madhu is okay. But the climax portion could have been trimmed for about 5 minutes. The production values are adequate for this kind of film.

'Balagam' movie review: A beautiful exploration of culture and the human condition

Having watched films like Karnan (2021), Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana (2021), and Angamaly Diaries (2017) I have always yearned for Telugu films to portray and celebrate our culture. My wish has been fulfilled with Balagam . It not only represents the customs of Telangana authentically but is entirely centred around its culture. 

For instance, we know that the interval point of any film is utilised to pronounce the central conflict of the story, and in Balagam , the interval point is built around the custom of offering a feast to the soul of the dead. When a crow doesn’t eat it, it is believed that the dead are yet to find peace, and naturally, it’s not considered to be a good sign.

So the family of the deceased patriarch, Komurayya (Sudhakar Reddy, a wonderful find), make the offering and wait for a crow to come down and have it. When it doesn’t happen, it creates emotional unrest--backed by quarrels in the past and egos--among them. And this conflict around the tradition transforms into the film’s core narrative; on one level, it is about the custom and on another level, it is about the people harbouring the custom. 

Balagam even looks at these people through the lenses of culture; their egos, and flaws. That apart, their personalities stand as reflections of their responses to everything that happens at a funeral. The detailed portrayal is astounding. Also, the song that captures the last rites of Komurayya, which begins as a celebration and ends in mourning, is effectively shot.

Two characters at opposing ends challenge to throw a bigger feast than the other. The bigger the feast, the larger the number of goats required. Minutes into the film, we get a fair idea about the jaunty Komurayya as he nonchalantly goes on with his day, flirting with women of different ages and interacting with the members of the close-knit community of his village. 

The following scene sets up the sturdy character of Komurayya’s angry elder son Aillayya (Jayram, again, great find) and then, his grandson, the ambitious yet unsuccessful Sayilu (a perfectly cast Priyadarshi). Many of Sayilu’s business plans have failed. His external conflict is to repay the load. And even when he learns about his grandfather’s untimely demise, he is more concerned about the possible delay of the engagement with his girlfriend and consequently, receiving the dowry money. The internal conflict is that he is selfishly materialistic at times of great loss. The moment he realises his selfishness and wrongdoings is heart-wrenching and Priyadarshi has effectively portrayed the role. 

One of the fascinating aspects of the film is that almost everyone here is grey, but it doesn’t manipulate you to hate or empathise with any particular character. In fact, it only rightly calls them out for their mistakes and misplaced priorities. 

Despite the despair in its atmosphere—considering the story takes place in a span of 11 days through a funeral—the film finds humour in many odd ways. From a woman crying persistently to another woman feigning sadness, many such rooted instances show the filmmaker drawing inspiration from lived-in experiences.

Balagam is not infallible, though, and it comes with its own set of flaws. The screenplay gets stuck in a tedium of repetitive scenes towards the end. Likewise, when Sayilu breaks into a dance in the otherwise fun ‘Potti Pilla’, you wonder why this character, that has been so realistic until that point, is suddenly behaving like he’s in a Telugu film. However, it lasts only a short while. This reminds me of a beautiful line in the song that goes ‘Kallulotti pakkana kaarappoosa lekka mana jodi mastuntade (Our pairing is as good as a spicy sev and palm wine)’. The film’s love for the lifestyle it portrays keeps popping up in distinct ways. 

The film also doesn’t try to get too inventive with its craft, with the staging and cinematography, despite running the risk of being called too simplistic, serve the story well, although I wish it had played more with the visuals instead of relying much on the dialogues. Meanwhile, the dialogues are the lifeline of the film and they do a wonderful job capturing the life of the Telangana region. 

While Venu Yeldandi paints a beautiful portrait, it’s Bheems Ceciroleo who gives it life with his music. Especially, his collaboration with folk musicians for one particular music piece that sums up the entirety of the film and the character arcs, in the end, is noteworthy. This sequence represents the confluence of two of Balagam’s traits: its urge to preach the importance of relationships and its love for the Telangana culture. And one shot in which we see the hands of this family placed one above the other, as they reach the final stage of the funeral, will be etched in my memory for a long time.  It is the image Balagam  stood for.

‘Balagam’ movie review: Death and drama, wrapped in humour

‘balagam’, first-time director venu yeldandi’s telugu indie-style drama starring priyadarshi, is outrageously funny while holding a mirror to fractured familial ties and human behaviour.

In Balagam , debut director Venu Yeldandi’s Telugu movie set in rural Telangana, a lady wails while recalling how the elderly man who has breathed his last had always relished the tea she served and asked for two more spoons of sugar and had also enquired if she is making fish pulusu . It is tough to not crack up as she says this because of what has transpired earlier. An elderly man’s passing and a motley group of villagers paying their obeisance with high drama open the stage for roaring laughter. In the next two hours, the narrative lays bare human behaviour, complete with bloated egos that can fracture familial ties over simple issues. 

Komarayya (Sudhakar Reddy) is not the likeable grandfather in the village. He is gregarious but also oblivious to the effect of his sharp statements and actions on those around him. Acharya Venu’s camera leads us into rural Telangana with its hills, fields and houses as the catchy ‘Maa ooru pallettooru’ composed by Bheems Ceciroleo plays on, unfolding a day in the life of Komarayya. Sudhakar Reddy plays Komarayya with an easy demeanour, convincing in his character’s exuberance and melancholy. Soon, we are curious about what is in his bag that he holds dear to him.

Komarayya’s sudden demise brings together his sons, daughter, their children, extended relatives and the villagers. The grandson Sailu (Priyadarshi) who has been hoping to get engaged, get a fat dowry and repay his debts, is shattered. Elsewhere, a tailor (the director doing the honours for a brief, interesting part) goes into utter shock and keeps reiterating a couple of lines that turn out to be both funny and poignant.

Venu Yeldandi uses the patriarch’s death, the funeral and the rituals thereafter to depict family politics. Death becomes an excuse for several feasts accompanied by alcohol; a half-baked romance collapses only to open the stage for a new one, and someone squabbles over land. In short, life takes a 360-degree turn when the force that binds a family is gone. 

Hindi films such as Ramprasad ki Tehrvi and Pagglait , and the Kannada film Thithi come to mind for their exploration of death and family politics, but it is a new territory in Telugu. 

Balagam also turns its lens on how women bear the brunt of men dictating the rules of engagement in a family. When the humour wears off after a point, the drama around the rituals feels stretched. Nevertheless, these portions serve the purpose of making the villagers and family members look inwards and seek answers to whether they are truly grieving for a departed soul.

Priyadarshi is not new to playing an underdog, everyday man. The fact that he can do it believably, without any artifice, after several years in his career, is praiseworthy. The early romance scenes and his predicament at how the village folks treat his snooker table are hilarious; when he does some soul-searching towards the end, he prompts others to follow suit. Kavya Kalyanram, Muralidhar Goud (the father in DJ Tillu) , Sudhakar Reddy, Racha Ravi, Roopa and Jayaram are good fits for their parts. The several supporting actors who enact the parts of people in the village lend authenticity to the film. 

It’s been long since we have seen a rooted, indie-style Telugu film that explores subcultures of the Telugu states the way a Care of Kancharapalem or a Mallesham did. Balagam is a welcome addition to that list.

Balagam (2023) movie : What's Behind

Priyadarshi's Balagam directed by Venu Yeldandi is generating immense interest among movie lovers with unique trailers and teasers and with early premier shows. With Dil Raju getting associated with the project, curiosity levels increased. The film's OTT partner is yet to be finalized and streaming will be on after the completion of its theatrical run. The film is releasing on 3 March 2023. Let us find out what Balagam offered to movie lovers.  

Balagam movie : Story Review

Balagam story is all about human emotions in the rustic and rural backdrop of the interiors of Telangana. Komarayya (Sudhakar Reddy) who mingles with everyone in his village has a grandson Saiyulu. Saiyulu (Priyadarshi) burns his hands by doing various business taking debts. Unable to pay the debts he pins his hopes on the dowry. But one day prior he gets a huge shock when his grandfather passes away. Many relatives come to attend his final rites and Saiyulu comes to know  that his uncle's daughter Sandhya (Kavya Kalyanram) heirs lot of properties and decides to trap her in the name of love. But his father (Jayaram) and uncle (Muralidhar) has age old disputes. What are the disputes, whether Sayilu emerge successful in his plans form the rest of the narration.

Balagam movie : Artists Review

All the artists did not act but lived in those roles. Priyadarshi who is known as a natural performer once again stole the show. He carried the expressions and emotions and elevated the scenes with his screen presence. Kavya Kalyan Ram impressed with her looks. She not only attracted by her looks but also beautified the scenes with her performance. She came out with good emotions and expressions. Sudhakar Reddy who played the role of Priyadarshi's grandfather might have got a limited screen presence but she stole the show with his performance making a powerful impact.

Balagam movie : Technicians Review

Balagam's story readied by Venu Yeldandi is high on emotions and highlighted the thinking of people and the practices still followed by them in the name of superstitions. Venu Yeldandi on debut emerged successful in highlighting how the villagers practice and follow superstitions even though they use modern technology like cell phones. He highlighted the sensitivities quite well and the climax situation makes a powerful impact. It leaves everyone move emotionally.

Veun Yeldandi not only narrated the emotional story in a beautiful way with his interesting screenplay and direction but also made his presence felt as a singer, especially during the climax. He also performed well in an important role.

Acharya Venu's cinematography is realistic and he showed the rural village atmosphere in a natural way. Madhu's editing is ok but there are few drags that slowed the pace of the film at times. Bheems music is good and he took the film to another level with his background music.

Production values are good. Dil Raju should be complemented by encouraging his younger generation to break away from the commercial entertainers and create a trend with a pathbreaking film like Balagam.

Altogether, Balagam's film highlights the traditions, slang, and language of the Telangana region. More than the slang, the film directed by Venu Yeldandi and featuring Priyadarshi is powered by intense emotions. Veun Yeldandi took the viewers slowly into the real story by starting the narration in a hilarious way and then setting the stage to the high emotions stealing the hearts of all. Balagam reminds of the Kannada film Thithi which was released in 2015. Dialogues are impactful and thought-provoking and blended well with rich emotions. Considering all these elements, Cinejosh goes with a 3 Rating for Balagam .

Balagam First Review: Priyadarshi's Latest Family Drama Is Emotional, Heart-Touching & A Hilarious Ride!

Priyadarshi portrayed the role of Sailu, grandson of Kanakaiah. How he brings together the family and sorts out the differences is to be seen on the big screen.

Priyadarshi Pulikonda, who rose to fame as a popular comedian-actor in Telugu among the new generation of comedians has been dabbling with different kinds of roles, irrelevant of genre. His performance in films like 'Mallesam' stand testimonial to his talent as an actor. His latest, a family drama titled 'Balagam' is going to hit the screens on March 3. Balagam is directed by Venu Yeldandi aka Tillu Venu, who is making his directorial debut.

Ahead of the theatrical release, the movie unit hosted a premiere for the critics and other filmmakers on March 2. Balagam is receiving a positive response from the critics and fraternity of Tollywood.

The movie was established in a village backdrop around a happy-go-lucky senior citizen named Gajula Kanakaiah played by Sudhakar Reddy. He is a joyful person on the surface but is a depressed soul deep down. Kanakaiah dies suddenly, and his two sons and daughter reach the village to perform the final rites.

However, after offering a 'pinda pradanam,' none of the birds come to eat the food offered for the peaceful passing away of Kanakaiah. On the other hand, Kankaiah's children quarrel with each other.

The film was produced by Harishith Reddy, and Hanshitha Reddy under Dil Raju's Sri Venkateswara Creations banner. Music of the film was composed by 'Dhamaka' fame Bheems Ceciroleo. Acharya Venu cranked the camera as Balagam's cinematographer.

క్రైమ్ కామెడీ సినిమాల్లో మత్తు వదలరా సినిమా ట్రెండ్ సెట్టర్. అలాంటి హిట్ సినిమాకు సీక్వెల్ గా వచ్చింది మత్తు వదలరా 2 సినిమా. సీక్వెల్ కోసం కావాల్సిన సెటప్ మొత్తం బాగానే సిద్ధం చేశాడు దర్శకుడు. ఇంతకీ మొదటి సినిమా రేంజ్ లో ఈ సీక్వెల్ ఉందో లేదో చూద్దాం

మొదటి భాగంలో ఓ క్రేజీ కేసు నుంచి తప్పించుకున్న బాబు (శ్రీసింహా), యేసు (సత్య) గత్యంతరం లేక హీ-టీమ్ లో చేరతారు. కిడ్నాప్ కేసులు ఛేదించడంలో ఫేమస్ అవుతారు. అయితే వాళ్లకు ఇచ్చే జీతం సరిపోక, ఛేదించే కేసుల నుంచే కొంత ‘తస్కరించి’ డిపార్ట్ మెంట్ లో అబద్ధాలు చెబుతుంటారు. ఈసారి కాస్త గట్టిగా తస్కరించే ప్రయత్నం చేసి అడ్డంగా దొరికిపోతారు. ఏకంగా ఓ మర్డర్ కేసులో ఇరుక్కుపోవడమే కాక, పక్కా సాక్ష్యాలతో బుక్కయిపోతారు. ఈ కేసు నుంచి బాబు- యేసు ఎలా బయటపడ్డారు. వాళ్లకు అదే హీ-టీమ్ లో పనిచేస్తున్న నిధి (ఫరియా అబ్దుల్లా) ఎలా సహకరించింది అనేది ఈ సినిమా స్టోరీ.

ఈ సినిమాలో కథ- కథనం కంటే కామెడీనే చూడండి అంటూ దర్శకుడు రితేష్ రానా ప్రచారంలో చెబుతూనే ఉన్నాడు. అతడు చెప్పింది నిజం. ఈ సినిమాలో లాజిక్స్ కోసం వెదక్కూడదు. కామెడీని ఎంజాయ్ చేయాలంతే. ఈ విషయంలో సినిమా తొలి భాగం పైసా వసూల్ అనిపిస్తుంది.

మరీ ముఖ్యంగా సత్య కామెడీ హైలెట్. అతడి వన్- లైనర్ పంచ్ లు, డైలాగ్ డెలివరీ, బాడీ లాంగ్వేజ్ అన్నీ బాగున్నాయి. ఇంకా చెప్పాలంటే, మొదటి భాగం వరకు హీరో సత్యానే. అలా ఇంటర్వెల్ పాయింట్ వరకు సినిమాను బాగానే లాక్కొచ్చాడు దర్శకుడు. మలి భాగంపై మరిన్ని అంచనాలు పెంచుతూ ఇంటర్వెల్ కార్డు వేస్తాడు.

కానీ సెకండాఫ్ కు వచ్చేసరికి కథ ముందుకొచ్చింది, సత్య కమెడీ వెనక సీటుకు చేరుకుంది. కథను ముందుకు తీసుకెళ్లి కంచికి చేర్చే క్రమంలో దర్శకుడు కామెడీ డోస్ తగ్గించాడు. అక్కడక్కడ కామెడీ ఉన్నప్పటికీ.. ఫస్టాఫ్ లో వినిపించిన స్థాయిలో సెకెండాఫ్ లో థియేటర్ లో నవ్వులు వినిపించలేదు. ఎప్పుడైతే కామెడీ తగ్గిందో, ఆటోమేటిగ్గా ప్రేక్షకుడి దృష్టి కథపైకి వెళ్లింది.

లాజిక్కులే లేకుండా వచ్చే సన్నివేశాలు, ఒకే సెటప్ లో అక్కడక్కడే తిరుగుతున్నట్టు అనిపించే కథనం కాస్త ఇబ్బంది పెడుతుంది. తిరిగి ప్రీ-క్లయిమాక్స్ నుంచి సినిమా ఊపందుకుంది. మరోసారి సత్య మార్క్ కామెడీతో సినిమాను ముగించారు.

ఇప్పటివరకు మనం హీరో గురించి చెప్పుకోలేదు. కేవలం సత్య గురించి మాత్రమే చెప్పుకున్నాం. అది నిజమే, ఈ సినిమాలో హీరో కంటే సత్యానే ఎక్కువ ఆకర్షిస్తాడు. చాలా స్క్రీన్ టైమ్ అతడే తస్కరించాడు. ఈ సినిమా అతడి కెరీర్ లో బెస్ట్ మూవీస్ లో ఒకటిగా నిలిచిపోతుంది. ఇక శ్రీసింహ తన గత సినిమాలతో పోలిస్తే మరింత మెరుగ్గా నటించాడు. కానీ అతడి బాడీ లాంగ్వేజ్ లో ఇంకాస్త ఎక్కువ చలాకీతనం కనిపిస్తే బాగుండేది.

కీలక పాత్రలు పోషించిన అజయ్, ఫరియా అబ్దుల్లా, రోహిణి తన పాత్రలకు న్యాయం చేయగా.. వెన్నెల కిషోర్ తన పార్ట్ వరకు బాగానే మెప్పించాడు. సునీల్ మాత్రం పూర్తిగా నిరాశపరిచాడు. అతడిలోని కామెడీ టైమింగ్ ను దర్శకుడు ఎక్కడా వాడుకోలేకపోయాడు. ఇంకా చెప్పాలంటే, సునీల్ పాత్ర నవ్వులు పంచకపోగా.. టోటల్ గా మిస్-ఫైర్ అయింది. అతడి క్యారెక్టర్ కూడా పండితే సినిమా నెక్ట్స్ లెవెల్లో ఉండేది. దీనికితోడు సెకెండాఫ్ లో కొన్ని లాజిక్కులు మిస్సయ్యాయి.

ఇందులో పావలా శ్యామల ఉండదనే విషయాన్ని ఓపెనింగ్ లోనే చెప్పేశారు. చిరంజీవి, పవన్ కల్యాణ్ సినిమాల రిఫరెన్సులు, పాటలు స్క్రీన్ ప్లేకు తగ్గట్టు బాగానే వాడుకున్నారు. దర్శకుడు రితేష్ రానా సీక్వెల్ తీయాలనే ఆలోచనతో కథ మొదలుపెట్టడమే, ఈ పార్ట్-2కు ఇబ్బందికరంగా మారింది. అప్పటి పాత్రల్ని బాగానే కొనసాగించినప్పటికీ, డ్రగ్స్ ఎలిమెంట్ ను కూడా బాగానే ఇరికించినప్పటికీ.. సెకెండాప్ లో తన మార్క్ రైటింగ్ ను అతడు కోల్పోయినట్టు అనిపిస్తుంది.

క్రైమ్ థ్రెడ్ పై దర్శకుడు అంతగా దృష్టి పెట్టలేదు. మొదటి భాగం అంత హిట్టవ్వడానికి కారణం, క్రైమ్ థ్రెడ్ లో ఉత్కంఠ. పార్ట్-2లో అది మిస్సయింది. క్లయిమాక్స్ లో చూపించిన ట్విస్ట్ కూడా షాకింగ్ గా అనిపించలేదు. దీనికి తోడు టీవీ సీరియల్ ఎపిసోడ్ కూడా ఆశించిన స్థాయిలో పేలలేదు. ఇంకా చెప్పాలంటే ట్రయిలర్ లో చూపించిన క్లిప్ మాత్రమే నవ్వించింది. ఇక ట్రయిలర్ లో చూపించిన వెన్నెల కిషోర్ క్లిప్ అయితే సినిమాలో లేనేలేదు. టీవీ సీరియల్ ఎపిసోడ్ ను, వెన్నెల కిషోర్ ట్రాక్ ను మరింత హిలేరియస్ గా రాసుకోవచ్చు.

టెక్నికల్ గా మూవీ బాగుంది. కాలభైరవ బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్, సురేష్ సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ మూడ్ ను బాగా సెట్ చేసింది. డబ్బుల్లేని హీ-టీమ్ డిపార్ట్ మెంట్ కాబట్టి, సెట్ వర్క్ ను కూడా అలానే చూపించారు. ఎడిటింగ్ ఓకే.

ఓవరాల్ గా మత్తు వదలరా 2 సినిమాను సత్య కామెడీ కోసం ఓసారి చూడొచ్చు. మొదటి భాగాన్ని బాగా ప్రేమించిన ప్రేక్షకులు మాత్రం ఈ సీక్వెల్ ను చూసి కాస్త నిరాశచెందుతారు.

Kalinga Review: 'కళింగ' మూవీ రివ్యూ

ప్రస్తుతం టాలీవుడ్‌లో డివోషనల్ టచ్ ఉండే మూవీస్ హిట్స్ కొడుతున్నాయి. మరోవైపు హారర్ జానర్ అనేది ఎవర్ గ్రీన్ అని చెప్పొచ్చు. ఇప్పుడు ఈ రెండింటిని మిక్స్ చేసి తీసిన సినిమా 'కళింగ'. ధృవ వాయు హీరోగా నటించి దర్శకత్వం వహించాడు. ప్రగ్యా నయన్ హీరోయిన్. తాజాగా థియేటర్లలోకి వచ్చిన ఈ మూవీ ఎలా ఉందనేది ఇప్పుడు రివ్యూలో చూద్దాం.

కథేంటి? కళింగ అనే ప్రాంతం. ఈ ఊరు పొలిమేర దాటి అడవిలోకి వెళ్లినోళ్లు ప్రాణాలతో తిరిగి రారు. ఇదే ఊరిలో ఓ అనాథ లింగ (ధృవ వాయు). అదే ఊరిలో ఉండే పద్దు (ప్రగ్యా నయన్) ని ప్రాణంగా ప్రేమిస్తుంటాడు. కానీ ఈమె తండ్రి వీళ్ల ప్రేమకు అడ్డుచెబుతాడు. ఊరిపెద్ద దగ్గరున్న పొలం తనఖా విడిపిస్తేనే పెళ్లి చేస్తానని అంటాడు. కొన్ని గొడవల కారణంగా ఊరికి దగ్గరలోని అడవిలోకి లింగ, అతడి స్నేహితుడు వెళ్లాల్సి వస్తుంది. అప్పుడు ఊహించని పరిణామాలు ఎదురవుతాయి. ఇంతకీ అడవిలో ఏముంది? చివరకు ఏమైందనేదే స్టోరీ.

ఎలా ఉందంటే? కళింగ అనే సంస్థానం గురించి చెబుతూ సినిమాని మొదలుపెట్టారు. ఇక్కడ ప్రజలు వింతగా ప్రవరిస్తూ తమని తాము చంపుకొంటూ ఉంటారని, అడవిలోకి వెళ్లినోళ్లు తిరిగి రారని చెప్పి క్యూరియాసిటీ పెంచారు. ఆ తర్వాత లింగ-పద్దు లవ్ స్టోరీ.. ఊరిపెద్దతో లింగ తమ్ముడు గొడవ ఇలా స్టోరీ అంతా సెట్ చేసి ఫస్టాప్ నడిపించేశారు. తన పెళ్లి కోసం అడవిలోకి లింగ వెళ్లాలని నిర్ణయించుకోవడంతో ఇంటర్వెల్ పడుతుంది. 

అడవిలో ఏముంది? లోపలికి వెళ్లిన వాళ్లు ఎందుకు తిరిగి రావట్లేదు? అనే ప్రశ్నలకు సమాధానాలని సెకండాఫ్‌లో చెప్పారు. చివర్లో అసురభక్షి పాంయిట్ కొత్తగా అనిపిచింది. అయితే సినిమా పరంగా చూసుకుంటే పాయింట్ బాగున్నప్పటికీ చిన్న చిన్న లోపాలు ఉన్నాయి. కళింగ కథని వాయిస్ ఓవర్‌తో చెప్పించేశారు. విజువల్‌గా చూపించి ఉంటే బాగుండేది. లవ్ స్టోరీ రొటీన్. కథ అక్కడక్కడ పక్కదారి పట్టిన ఫీలింగ్ కలుగుతుంది. హారర్ డోస్ కూడా కాస్త తగ్గినట్లు అనిపిస్తుంది.

ఎవరెలా చేశారు? హీరో కమ్ దర్శకుడిగా ధృవవాయు ఆకట్టుకున్నాడు. లింగ పాత్రలో పర్వాలేదనిపించాడు. డైరెక్టర్‌గా కొన్నిచోట్ల మాత్రం ఆశ్చర్యపరిచాడు. హీరోయిన్‌గా చేసిన ప్రగ్యా నయన్ గ్లామర్ పరంగా న్యాయం చేసింది. లక్ష‍్మణ్, ఆడుకాలం నరేన్, మురళీధర్ గౌడ్ తదితరులు తమ పాత్రలకు న్యాయం చేశారు. బీజీఎం బాగుంది. సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ, నిర్మాణ విలువలు రిచ్‌గా ఉన్నాయి.

Kalinga Movie Review: తెలుగు హార‌ర్ థ్రిల్ల‌ర్ మూవీ క‌ళింగ శుక్ర‌వారం థియేట‌ర్ల ద్వారా ప్రేక్ష‌కుల ముందుకొచ్చింది. ధృవ‌వాయు హీరోగా న‌టిస్తూ ద‌ర్శ‌క‌త్వం వ‌హించిన ఈ మూవీ హిట్టా? ఫ‌ట్టా? అంటే?

Kalinga Movie Review: ధృవ‌వాయు హీరోగా న‌టిస్తూ ద‌ర్శ‌క‌త్వం వ‌హించిన క‌ళింగ మూవీ శుక్ర‌వారం థియేట‌ర్ల‌లో రిలీజైంది. ప్ర‌గ్యాన‌య‌న్ హీరోయిన్‌గా న‌టించిన ఈ మూవీలో ముర‌ళీధ‌ర్‌గౌడ్‌, మీసాల ల‌క్ష్మ‌ణ్ ప్ర‌ధాన పాత్ర‌ల్లో న‌టించారు. ఈ హార‌ర్ థ్రిల్ల‌ర్ మూవీ ఎలా ఉందంటే?

క‌ళింగ మిస్ట‌రీ...

క‌ళింగ ఊరి పొలిమేర‌ను దాటి అడ‌విలోకి వెళ్లిన వాళ్లు ఎవ‌రూ ప్రాణాల‌తో తిరిగొచ్చిన దాఖ‌లాలు ఉండ‌వు. ఆ ఊరికి చెందిన లింగ (ధృవ‌వాయు) ఓ అనాథ‌. సారాకాస్తూ త‌న‌కు న‌చ్చిన‌ట్లుగా బ‌తుకుతుంటాడు. ఆ ఊరికే చెందిన ప‌ద్దును (ప్ర‌గ్యాన‌య‌న్‌) ప్రాణంగా ప్రేమిస్తాడు లింగ‌. కానీ ప‌ద్దు తండ్రి (ముర‌ళీధ‌ర్‌గౌడ్‌) మాత్రం వారి ప్రేమ‌కు అడ్డు చెబుతాడు. ఊరిపెద్ద (ఆడుకాలం న‌రేన్‌) వ‌ద్ద త‌న‌ఖాలో ఉన్న లింగ పొలం విడిపించుకుంటేనే పెళ్లి జ‌రిపిస్తాన‌ని కండీష‌న్ పెడ‌తాడు.

త‌న త‌మ్ముడు బ‌లితో ఉన్న గొడ‌వ‌ల కార‌ణంగా లింగ‌కు అత‌డి పొలం బ‌దులు అడ‌వి ద‌గ్గ‌ర‌లోని భూమిని రాసిస్తాడు ఊరిపెద్ద‌. త‌మ పొలం కోసం పొలిమేర దాటి అడ‌విలోకి వెళ్లిన లింగ‌కు, అత‌డి స్నేహితుడికి ఎలాంటి అనూహ్య ప‌రిణామాలు ఎదుర‌య్యాయి? ప‌ద్దుకు లింగ‌ను దూరం చేయాల‌ని ఊరి పెద్ద ఎందుకు అనుకున్నాడు.

లింగ‌తో బ‌లికి ఉన్న గొడ‌వ‌ల‌కు కార‌ణం ఏమిటి? క‌ళింగ రాజు సంప‌ద అడ‌విలో ఎక్క‌డ ఉంది? ఆ సంస్థానానికి ఉన్న శాపం ఏమిటి? అసుర భ‌క్షి వెన‌కున్న మిస్ట‌రీని లింగ ఎలా ఛేదించాడు అన్న‌దే ఈ మూవీ క‌థ‌.

హార‌ర్ ఫాంట‌సీ థ్రిల్ల‌ర్‌...

క‌ళింగ హార‌ర్ అంశాల‌తో ముడిప‌డిన ఫాంట‌సీ థ్రిల్ల‌ర్ మూవీ. అంత‌ర్లీనంగా ఓ ల‌వ్‌స్టోరీతో పాటు డివోష‌న‌ల్ ట‌చ్ ఇస్తూ హీరో క‌మ్ ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు ధృవ‌వాయు క‌ళింగ క‌థ‌ను రాసుకున్నాడు. మ‌ల్టీజాన‌ర్ మూవీగా ఈ సినిమాను తెర‌కెక్కించాడు.

సెకండాఫ్‌లో చిక్కుముడులు

క‌ళింగ సంస్థానంలోని ప్ర‌జ‌లు వింత‌వింత‌గా ప్ర‌వ‌ర్తిస్తూ త‌మ‌ను తామే చంపుకోవ‌డం, పొలిమేర దాటిన వారు ఎవ‌రూ ప్రాణాల‌తో తిరిగి రాలేద‌నే అంశాల‌తో క‌ళింగ సినిమా మొద‌ల‌వుతుంది. ఆ త‌ర్వాత లింగ‌, ప‌ద్దు ల‌వ్‌స్టోరీ, ఊరిపెద్ద త‌మ్ముడితో లింగ గొడ‌వ‌ల చుట్టూ ఫ‌స్ట్ హాఫ్‌ను న‌డిపించాడు.

కళింగ సంస్థానంలోని ఓ గ్రామ పొలిమేర దాటిన వ్యక్తులు ఎవరూ తిరిగి ఊర్లోకి రాని చరిత్ర ఉంటుంది. ఆ ఊరికి చెందిన లింగ (ధ్రువ వాయు) జలాయిగా తిరుగుతూ ఎలాంటి బాధ్యతలు లేకుండా మద్యం మత్తులో బతుకుంటాడు. పద్మావతి అలియాస్ పద్దు అనే యువతిని ప్రేమించి పెళ్లి చేసుకొంటాడు. లింగ కుటుంబానికి చెందిన భూమి ఆ గ్రామ పెద్ద (ఆడుకాలమ్ నరేన్) ఆధీనంలో ఉంటుంది. లింగకు వారి భూమికి బదులు సంస్థాన పొలిమేరలో భూమి కేటాయిస్తాడు. తన భూమి కోసం పొలిమేర దాటి వెళ్తాడు.

ఆ పొలిమేర దాటిన వారికి ప్రాణాలు ఎందుకు గాలిలో కలిసిపోతున్నాయి? కళింగ సామ్రాజ్యానికి చెందిన సంపద అక్కడే ఎందుకు పెట్టారు? ఆ సంపద కోసం ఎలాంటి సంఘటనలు చోటు చేసుకొన్నాయి? పొలిమేర దాటిన లింగకు ఎలాంటి అనుభవాలు ఎదురయ్యాయి? సంస్థానంలోని సంపదను లింగ చేజిక్కించుకొన్నాడా? అనే ప్రశ్నలకు సమాధానమే కళింగ సినిమా కథ.

కళింగ సినిమా ఆరంభంలో హిరణ్య కశ్యపుడు, నరసింహ స్వామి ఎపిసోడ్‌తో మూవీ గ్రాండ్‌గా ఎలా ఉంటుందో చెప్పేందుకు చేసిన ప్రయత్నం బాగుంది. ఆ ఎపిసోడ్‌తో అంచనాల బార్‌ను భారీగా పెంచేశాడు. కానీ కథలో సన్నివేశాలను ఒక ఫ్లోగా చెప్పకుండా.. బిట్స్.. బిట్స్‌గా చెప్పడం వల్ల ఎమోషనల్ కనెక్టవిటీ మిస్ అయిందనే ఫీల్ కలుగుతుంది. కానీ ప్రతీ ఎపిసోడ్ దేనికదే బాగుంది.

దర్శకుడిగా, హీరోగా ధ్రువ వాయు సినిమా రూపొందించిన విధానం బాగుంది. యాక్టర్‌గా ఆకట్టుకొన్నాడు. అలాగే దర్శకుడిగా అతడి విజన్ ఎక్సలెంట్‌గా ఉంది. కానీ కథను పర్‌ఫెక్ట్‌గా చేసుకొని ఉంటే.. ఇలాంటి జోనర్‌లో ట్రెండ్ సెట్ చేసి ఉండేవాడేమో అనిపిస్తుంది. డైరెక్టర్, యాక్టర్‌గా తనకు తాను మంచి మార్కులు కొట్టేశారు.

ఈ మూవీలో నటించిన హీరోయిన్ ప్రగ్యా నయన్ తనకు వచ్చిన అవకాశాన్ని పూర్తిగా సద్వినియోగం చేసుకొన్నారనే చెప్పాలి. ఎమోషనల్, రొమాంటిక్ సీన్లలో ఫెర్ఫార్మెన్స్ బాగుంది. నరేన్, మీసాల లక్ష్మణ్, మురళీధర్ గౌడ్ తదితరులు తమ పాత్రల పరిధి మేరకు మెప్పించారు.

కళింగ సినిమా అత్యంత బలం సాంకేతిక అంశాలు. ముఖ్యంగా ఈ సినిమా లొకేషన్లు అద్బుతంగా ఉన్నాయి. ఇప్పటి వరకు ఎన్నడూ చూడని లొకేషన్లలో అద్బుతంగా చిత్రకీరించారు. అక్షయ్ రామ్ పొడిశెట్టి చిత్రీకరించిన సన్నివేశాలు చాలా రిచ్‌గా ఉన్నాయి. విష్ణు శేఖర్ అందించిన బీజీఎం సన్నివేశాలను భారీగా ఎలివేట్ చేసింది. నరేష్ వేణువంక ఎడిటింగ్ సినిమాను పరుగులు పెట్టించింది. దీప్తి కొండవీటి, పృథ్వీ యాదవ్ అనుసరించిన నిర్మాణ విలువలు హై స్టాండర్డ్‌లో ఉన్నాయి.

హిస్టరీ, పురాణాల బ్యాక్ డ్రాప్‌తో ట్రెజర్ హంట్ నేపథ్యంగా సాగే థ్రిల్లర్ కళింగ. డైరెక్షన్, నటీనటుల పెర్ఫార్మెన్స్, టెక్నికల్ వ్యాల్యూస్ ఈ సినిమాకు పాజిటివ్. ఓ మంచి పాయింట్‌ను పూర్తిస్థాయి కథగా విస్తరించలేకపోవడం చిన్న లోపంగా కనిపిస్తుంది. హారర్, థ్రిల్లర్, సస్పెన్స్ జోనర్లను ఇష్టపడేవారికి కళింగ నచ్చడానికి చాలా అంశాలు ఉన్నాయి. వీలుంటే ఈ వారం ఈ సినిమాపై ఓ లుక్కేయండి..

Hema, 87 others named in B'luru rave party charge sheet

Karnataka Police on Thursday submitted a charge sheet naming Telugu actress Hema and 87 others in connection with a rave party at a farmhouse near Bengaluru that was busted in May this year. 

The 1,086-page charge sheet submitted to the Bengaluru Rural Additional District Sessions Court mentions that Hema had consumed narcotic substances at the party themed ‘Sunset to Sunrise Victory' on May 20, which was attended by around 100 people, including techies, Telugu actors, and others.

Police sources said her medical reports confirmed that Hema had consumed MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy which contains stimulant and psychedelic properties. Another actress has been made witness in the case after she tested negative for consumption of drugs.

The charge sheet has named 88 persons as accused in the case, including a Nigerian national named Augstin Dada. Of them, 79 are facing charges of consuming narcotic substances. 

The police also submitted call detail records (CDRs) of the accused to the court. 

According to the charge sheet, the police seized MDMA tablets, MDMA crystals, 5 gm cocaine, Rs 500 currency notes laced with cocaine, large quantity ganja, five mobile phones, Volkswagen and Land Rover cars, and other articles from GM Farmhouse in the Singena Agrahara area near Electronics City, the venue of the rave party.

.The anti-narcotics wing of Karnataka Police raided the rave party organised at a farmhouse on the outskirts of Bengaluru on May 20. MDMA, cocaine, ganja, and other narcotic substances were allegedly used by those who attended the party. 

The investigation revealed that about 100 persons attended the party, most of whom were booked under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS), and various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The organisers of the party reportedly flown in over 25 people from Andhra Pradesh to Bengaluru for the event. 

The police also found a pass belonging to an Andhra Pradesh MLA in one of the cars parked at the farmhouse, sources stated.

Preliminary investigation revealed that an individual named Hari from Hyderabad organised the party under the pretext of a birthday celebration.

As the party continued past 2 a.m., narcotics wing officers raided the farmhouse. The police also found more than 15 luxury cars at the venue.

Popular Telugu actress Hema was arrested on June 3 in connection with the case before being released on bail.

In a video message released after the raid, Hema had claimed that she was not present in the party as she was relaxing at a farm in Hyderabad at that time. However, the police refused to buy her claims.

The actress had also created a scene while being taken away after a medical test, lashing out at the media for reporting 'fake news'.

The police weere also investigating the possibility of a sex racket operating alongside the supply of drugs. 

Five people were arrested in the case before it was transferred from the Electronics City police station to the CCB's Anti-Narcotics Wing. 

Three police personnel were suspended for negligence in duty in connection with the case.
