Non academic career options for PhD in Math

I am thinking of getting my M.S. in Computer Science. I chose C.S. because I enjoy programming and because its a solid choice, career wise. Low unemployment, good pay, all that jazz.

But my real passions has always been math and lately I have been thinking about swapping and going for my graduate degree in Math. If I went the math route I would probably go full PhD (since I don't think there is much you can do with just a Masters in math).

But as much as I love math, I can't see myself being a math teacher. I would want to work in research or industry, applying math to solve real world problems.

What kind of non-academic jobs are there for someone with a PhD in math (or what is the best resource to see what jobs are out there)?

  • 7 Why choose one or the other? There are lots of nichés out there where a solid knowledge in both CS and Math is an absolute necessity. Consider fields like cryptology or high performance computing. I personally work in bioinformatics; which requires strong basis in math, cs, statistics AND cell biology. –  posdef Commented Mar 28, 2013 at 11:49
  • 9 Where did you hear that there isn't much you can do with a master's in math? While a PhD in an applied math field would open up more opportunities, M.S. degrees in math are still major positive signals to many employers. –  John Bensin Commented Mar 28, 2013 at 19:43

It really depends on the kind of mathematics you do. For example, if your work involved probability/statistics, or even certain kinds of topology, you could get a job at pretty much any tech company doing machine learning. If you were doing stochastics, then Wall street will beckon.

If your Ph.D has a computational side to it (say in numerical methods for example) the national labs in the US are interested in your expertise.

And so on and so forth. The fact that you're doing an MS in Computer science makes your profile look even stronger.

While this might be viewed as a strongly biased suggestion, you might consider a Ph.D in Computer Science: there are many parts of computer science that are all mathematics, and you'd get to do what you love, as well as getting the CS branding that will make getting an industry job way easier.

It is not accurate to equate every academic job in mathematics with "being a math teacher" . I am a professor of (applied) mathematics, and I spend less than a quarter of my working hours on what is formally called teaching (including preparation, class time, grading, etc). Probably much less. Applied mathematics professors at research institutions primarily devote their time to "applying math to solve real world problems."

It's true that if you take a position at a SLAC, for instance, you may spend most of your time teaching. And in a broad sense, part of your job will be to teach mathematics, even if you are in industry (the setting is just less formal).

SIAM has a host of great resources on non-academic careers in (applied) mathematics:

Certain branches of applied mathematics look very promising regarding the job market. For example financial mathematics. However there are also companies which are interested in hiring pure mathematicians to work on real world problems. As an instance, I suggest you look at the web site of ThinkTank Maths . Their webpage for Mathematician - Mathematical Researcher says

We are particularly interested in applicants with highly abstract or pure mathematical backgrounds.

I listed a few possible options in a comment to a thread that was deleted, so here they are again. These are examples of actual jobs that people I know took as math graduates (most with a Master, some with a PhD), with the exclusion of the ones already mentioned in the other answers.

  • network analyst for a railroad company (in a country with a modern, very dense and complex network).
  • statistician/analyst for an online gambling/betting platform (I'm guessing casinos and slot machines manufacturers are hiring mathematicians as well).
  • grant evaluator, scientific advisor in a national science funding agency (especially for mathematicians with a PhD).
  • statistician in an insurance company
  • scientific advisor for a law enforcement agency

You can look into national lab jobs - see my answer here . Especially with your computer science background. Many mathematicians at the labs work on large-scale modeling problems that require high performance computing. Some examples: Sea ice models at LANL, building software tools for linear algebra at Sandia (Trillinos), computational chemistry at PNNL, developing graph theory tools at LANL (NetworkX).

These are just the US options that I've come across personally, there are national labs in many countries where mathematicians can work.

Do not do pure math: the job prospects in academia are horrible. Then, once you leave academia you'll figure out that a math degree while highly impressive is completely useless to employers. Yes, it's a fundamental discipline which undergirds every engineering field, but by itself it is abstract and totally and completely useless. You need to couple it with a degree in something that makes sense employment wise. I suppose it's a good field to minor, double major, or do a second master's in. What it is not is a basket to put all your eggs into. I'm not going to speak at length about industry jobs, suffice it to say that positions in industry where a pure mathematician is needed are even more scant than academic jobs.

Jordan S.'s user avatar

  • 1 positions in industry where a pure mathematician is needed are even more scant than academic jobs --- For most areas of pure math I think the empty set provides a more precise description of the totality of such jobs. –  Dave L Renfro Commented Oct 19, 2020 at 19:43
  • 2 positions in industry where a pure mathematician is needed are...scant : perhaps, the important word being needed . Replace the needed with valued and they are not scant at all. My Ph.D. in pure mathematics opened the door to a job in (business) management consulting, and offers from Wall Street, and in applied mathematics in a software house. There are many jobs out there in "industry" that care more about the type of thinking and work ethic you have learned, than the specific research area you worked in. –  Houska Commented Oct 20, 2020 at 19:25

The PhD in Mathematics provides training in mathematics and its applications to a broad range of disciplines and prepares students for careers in academia or industry. It offers students the opportunity to work with faculty on research over a wide range of theoretical and applied topics.

Degree Requirements

The requirements for obtaining an PhD in Mathematics can be found on the associated page of the BU Bulletin .

  • Courses : The courses mentioned on the BU Bulletin page can be chosen from the graduate courses we offer here . Half may be at the MA 500 level or above, but the rest must be at the MA 700 level or above. Students can also request to use courses from other departments to satisfy some of these requirements. Please contact your advisor for more information about which courses can be used in this way. All courses must be passed with a grade of B- or higher.
  • Analysis (examples include MA 711, MA 713, and MA 717)
  • PDEs and Dynamical Systems (examples include MA 771, MA 775, and MA 776)
  • Algebra and Number Theory (examples include MA 741, MA 742, and MA 743)
  • Topology (examples include MA 721, MA 722, and MA 727)

The written component consists of an expository paper of typically fifteen to twenty-five pages on which the student works over a period of a few months under the guidance of the advisor. The topic of the expository paper is chosen by the student in consultation with the advisor. On completion of the paper, the student takes an oral exam given by a three-person committee, one of whom is the student’s advisor. The oral exam consists of a presentation by the student on the expository paper followed by questioning by the committee members. A student who does not pass the MA Comprehensive Examination may make a second attempt, but all students are expected to pass the exam no later than the end of the summer following their second year.
  • Oral Qualifying Examination: The topics for the PhD oral qualifying exam correspond to the two semester courses taken by the student from one of the 3 subject areas and one semester course each taken by the student from the other two subject areas. In addition, the exam begins with a presentation by the student on some specialized topic relevant to the proposed thesis research. A student who does not pass the qualifying exam may make a second attempt, but all PhD students are expected to pass the exam no later than the end of the summer following their third year.
  • Dissertation and Final Oral Examination: This follows the GRS General Requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree .

PhD student aims to improve AI for underserved languages and communities

Hellina Hailu Nigatu always loved math and physics – really any field that let her calculate things. Then she found computer science. By the time she'd started her PhD at UC Berkeley, she saw how computing skills could address a range of issues from healthcare to women's rights.

She learned in classes about concepts in Natural Language Processing and large language models developed in English. But Nigatu, who is Ethiopian, found that most of the methods she learned wouldn’t work in other languages she knew. The data didn’t exist on the internet to build chatbots for the Tigrinya language, like the ones already changing how English speakers live and work. The safeguards blocking some harmful content online weren’t effective for Amharic-speaking users.

“This is what happens when you have diversity in computer science,” said Nigatu, who is starting the fourth year of her doctorate program. “Almost all of my projects are inspired by personal experience.”

“I could be an English speaker who improves machine translation, speech recognition and whatever other technology in Amharic by  looking at performance on some evaluation metric,” she said. “But if I did not speak this language, if I was not from Ethiopia, if I was not impacted by this, I wouldn’t have the context to understand the nuanced problems that go beyond automatic metrics.”

The artificial intelligence boom is rapidly transforming modern life. But with a lack of diversity in who informs and develops these technologies and the disparities in the existing data being used, these tools could cement and exacerbate global inequalities.

Nigatu is an up-and-coming expert combating that risk through research and mentorship. She hopes to develop tools that are informed by and useful for communities, including her family and friends, who speak languages that have little available data online.

Preserving languages and cultures that have less data online

Nigatu graduated from Addis Ababa University with a bachelor’s of science in electrical and computer engineering. She graduated from Berkeley with a master’s of science in computer science and is being advised for her PhD by Berkeley Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences’ Sarah Chasins and John Canny .

The barriers Nigatu has faced in applying Natural Language Processing tools and techniques to languages with less data available – or low-resourced languages – inspired one of her latest research papers. Early in her doctorate program, she decided to build language models in Amharic and Tigrinya. But when she went to Wikipedia, a common source of data for language processing work, she found there weren’t enough entries for either language to develop those models. The entries that did exist were often not high quality enough to use, either.

Her recent paper from the ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems – “ Low-Resourced Languages and Online Knowledge Repositories: A Need-Finding Study ” – looked for an answer to why that hurdle existed. Nigatu and co-authors analyzed Wikipedia forum entries by experienced contributors and conducted interviews with novice contributors to Wikipedia for three languages – Amharic, Tigrinya, and Afan Oromo.

They found several intersecting challenges that made it difficult for people to add entries to the platform in these languages. Wikipedia contributors struggled with the design of the platform or the lack of language-support tools like keyboards for languages that weren’t based in Latin. They also ran into challenges due to socio-political issues, such as the lack of scholarly work freely accessible on the internet that they could cite in their entries.

The dearth of data on currently recognized online knowledge repositories like Wikipedia presents major risks, Nigatu said. These platforms are being used to develop next generation tools that will be foundational to how we live our lives moving forward. The platforms are already preserving and sharing information and cultural values in higher-resourced languages like English, but aren’t offering equally useful or accessible data for other languages, she said.

“We should be building from the ground up with community values in mind.”

“We should be building from the ground up with community values in mind, so that we preserve these languages and these identities without expecting them to adapt to the default,” said Nigatu. These platforms must “serve their needs” and not exploit them or their data, she said.

Improving the safety of the online experience

Nigatu has also found research questions through her own lived experiences. She noticed that when she searched for benign terms in Amharic on YouTube, she’d receive policy-violating, pornographic videos as results. When she dug deeper, she found this was a broader pattern for Amharic search results on the platform. She turned her discovery of this issue into a paper.

Niagatu and co-author Inioluwa Deborah Raji collected data from, and conducted interviews with, users of the platform centered on the YouTube results for Amharic searches. In their paper “ I Searched for a Religious Song in Amharic and Got Sexual Content Instead”: Investigating Online Harm in Low-Resourced Languages on YouTube ,” they found that content moderation was a big problem. Very few human content moderators focus on any non-English language, and automated content moderation doesn’t work well for low-resourced languages.

They also found people posting on YouTube used techniques to evade moderation, like using “doctor” or medical terms in their channel names in order to seem like they were offering health advice. And by analyzing the comments, they found that migrant workers located in Middle Eastern countries seeking medical advice were often tricked into clicking on pornographic content. Amharic users interviewed for the paper said they felt disempowered and devalued.

“This project showed that when we ignore a huge population in how we design and how we build technologies, the result is that these populations are disproportionately burdened with the harms,” said Nigatu of the paper published in Proceedings of ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency .

“When we ignore a huge population in how we design and how we build technologies, the result is that these populations are disproportionately burdened with the harms.”

But for Nigatu, this project also highlighted something else. As she was working on this paper, she had to overcome significant pushback and questions from others about whether this was a problem and whether there was real harm being done here. It made her question whether to tackle the paper at all. She credits Raji for encouraging her to continue.

“When I say ‘online harm,’ people are like, ‘Oh, did it lead to genocide? Did people die from it?’ And I'm like, ‘I mean, harm doesn't have to get to that stage for it to be harmful,’” said Nigatu. “The standards that we have for what's acceptable to certain communities and what's not is very, very different.”

Expanding the field moving forward

Nigatu is already onto her next project. In June, she received a diversity, equity and inclusion scholarship from the ACM Conference on Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency.

Using this recognition, she will work to improve machine translation for low-resourced, Ethiopian languages. She will also fund and mentor female students from Ethiopia to work on that research with her. This builds on past mentorship she’s offered to Ethiopian women in the computer science field.

“I know how hard it was for me to try to do research when I was there, so I do whatever I can do to try to bridge that gap,” Nigatu said.

While technology is rapidly advancing, diversifying who creates computing tools will take time. In the meantime, she hopes researchers will speak with members of underrepresented communities to hear their experiences and insights.

She feels the responsibility of being an Ethiopian female researcher every day. When she interviewed with Chasins to be her PhD advisor at Berkeley years ago, Chasins asked what would get Nigatu out of bed on the mornings she was too exhausted to do the work. Nigatu’s answer was simple.

“I don't have the luxury of saying, ‘Oh, I can’t do it today,’ because it's practically me. I am the person who's at the end going to be using these technologies. It's my friend. It's my sisters. It's everyone that I'm close to,” she said.

“I pull a lot of the motivation for my work from my personal experience and from the experiences of those around me,” Nigatu said. “It keeps me going."

Internship or entry-level position?

Research shows that 76 percent of employers prefer to hire experienced candidates for entry-level positions

Kevin Womack created visualizations of internet data units during an internship at Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Kevin Womack

Kevin Womack was just weeks away from graduation from Morehouse College and a degree in math and computer science; but he had a tough decision to make. Should he accept a position with Google, go directly to work and start earning a paycheck? Or pursue a graduate degree at Columbia with time spent at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) as part of the GEM Fellowship Program . GEM is sponsored by the National Graduate Education for Minority Students Consortium.

After graduation, students are often eager to settle into a full-time position with steady pay and job security; however, this route may not be the most viable option for some students. Job postings in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields may be plentiful, but managers are fairly specific in their search criteria—often eliminating many recent graduates.

Even in entry-level positions, managers look for demonstrated experience of field-specific skills in a hands-on environment. Kathryn Jackson’s article in Perspectives in Health Information Management cites research stating that 76 percent of employers prefer to hire experienced people for entry-level positions.

While some potential candidates may be able to point to college and extracurricular activities that highlight experience in leadership or communication, attaining hands-on, industry-specific experience prior to an entry-level position may be more difficult without an internship.

Why are internships important to career development?

Research consistently shows that internships help prepare students for the incongruities of book learning and field learning. While academic discipline is critical, the value of putting knowledge to work prepares students uniquely for a research or science career.

Across academic disciplines, 96 percent of colleges and universities perceive that their students are prepared for the workforce, while only 11 percent of employers agree, according to Jackson’s article.

This skills gap engenders the question of why students at higher education institutions make the choice between internships and part time/full time employment. Additionally, the STEM fields have been plagued by another chronic challenge: a lack of a diversity in the technology workforce. According to the 2018 America’s Strategy for STEM Education report, while minority candidates constitute 27% of the U.S. population, they only comprise 11% of the STEM workforce.

Some technology companies have taken considerable steps to ensure that students within the STEM fields are acquiring a balanced combination of both hard and soft skills needed to work and thrive in the organizations’ technical and cultural environments.

The Google Tech Exchange, one of the tech company’s diversity initiatives, addresses both the skills gap and workforce diversity challenges. As part of the program 65 students from HBCUs and Hispanic institutions head to Silicon Valley to enhance their computer science skills. This is an expansion of other Google diversity programs like Howard West and Google in Residence. After witnessing the impact that these programs made in the lives of the students who participated, Google wanted to offer the opportunity to students at other HBCUs.

Womack experienced the Google in Residence initiative first hand. That program embedded technical staff members at selected Historically Black Colleges and Institutions (HBCUs) across the country as faculty members who can identify top talent at the outset of their matriculation.

“They were super hands-on and had a team that dealt with student relations and then a software engineer who was teaching our course. So the software engineers would teach us the technical things we need to know, and hands-on student relations would give encouragement, help us with our resumes, and tell us the best ways to succeed. They were also in charge of retention, so doing things to keep us there (Google).”

After graduating from Morehouse College in 2019, Womack chose a path that would let him intern at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and obtain a master’s degree from Columbia University.

“I think it was more a personal thing where I had to say to myself: What am I interested in doing? What am I interested in working on? And I realized that I don’t want to do software engineering for the rest of my life. I liked the degree program at Colombia University. Through the GEM Fellowship Program, I’ll be able to pay for my graduate degree. So it was a natural transition for me to hop off the Google train and get on board at ORNL.”

If academic knowledge is the foundation of preparedness for the workforce, hands-on experience is the building itself. The opportunity to use the knowledge acquired during university, customize it to specific problems and merge it with new technologies is critical to transitioning into a full-time career.

A first full-time job in a new graduate’s career is exciting, but students may want to ensure they are well prepared before jumping into the job search. Taking advantage of internship opportunities allows students to view and participate in a field while also gaining valuable life skills and networking with experienced mentors.

Advantages of an internship

  • Internships allow students to see how industry is using new technologies.
  • Internships may allow for quick exposure to a variety of research areas.
  • Internships provide opportunities to improve desirable professional traits, such as teamwork and interpersonal communication skills under the direction of a mentor and alongside peers.

Advantages of an entry-level position

  • New hires in an entry-level position learn the technology and programs specific to the job or research they will pursue in their career.
  • Students who have past hands-on experience and know the field they desire to pursue may benefit from seeking a full-time position.
  • Entry-level jobs provide a steady salary and benefits, as well as advancement opportunities.

  • Making the leap from postdoc to principal investigator

When Phoebe Hsieh, PhD, a postdoctoral research fellow at Fred Hutch Cancer Center, hits the job market later this year, she’ll bring more than her credentials and experience to the table.

She’ll bring five years of funding from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to help become a principal investigator in charge of her own lab.

Hsieh recently received the Postdoc-to-Faculty Transition Award from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The award, which helps young scientists start an independent cystic fibrosis research program, includes $80,000 for salary support and $30,000 for research in the final two years.

Hsieh will look for job possibilities at home in Taiwan as well as in the U.S.

“I’m really grateful to have this funding,” Hsieh said. “If things work well, hopefully I will have my own lab by the summer of next year.”

How a fight over magnesium undermines antibiotics

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that clogs the lungs, pancreas and other organs with thick mucus, making them more susceptible to multiple microbial infections.

Hsieh received a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Award from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in 2021 when she joined Fred Hutch.

Hsieh’s research in Fred Hutch’s Malik Lab and the University of Washington’s Dandekar Lab focuses on how two microbial organisms — a fungus and a bacterium — compete for survival in the airways of people with cystic fibrosis.

She helped forge a collaboration between the two labs, shepherding the project the way a principal investigator would.

“In most respects, she has been the PI for the project, from conception to execution to publication,” said her mentor, Fred Hutch microbiologist and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator Harmit Malik, PhD .

Bacteria attack fungi in various ways, but Hsieh wanted to know more about how fungi keep bacteria in check.

She is the lead author of a study published last month in PLOS Biology that identifies magnesium, an essential mineral for many cellular processes, as a key prize in the fungal-bacterial battle.

She discovered that a fungus snarfs up magnesium, a mineral that a species of bacteria needs for maintaining strong cellular walls.

In response, certain genetic mutations help the bacterium adapt to lower magnesium levels.

But those adaptations also make the bacterium less vulnerable to an antibiotic that destroys the bacterium’s cell walls by displacing magnesium.

Antibiotic resistance typically develops when bacteria survive exposure to an antibiotic and pass on the genes that helped it escape to new generations.

Hsieh discovered that the resistance is a temporary condition resulting from the fight with fungi over magnesium. The resistance can be reversed by either adding magnesium so there’s enough to go around or by removing the fungus.

“This opens a new window for us to understand what those new mutations actually do and why they are so distinct from the canonical mutations we know cause antibiotic resistance,” Hsieh said.

A lab of her own

The path from postdoc to principal investigator has grown narrower and more competitive in recent years.

In the early 1960s, about 60 percent of life science PhDs achieved tenure within 10 years of graduation. But by 2021, only 3.5 percent of biology PhD students working at universities reached that goal, according to a National Science Foundation survey cited in a 2023 Stat News report .

Postdoctoral researchers hired at Fred Hutch typically spend a few years obtaining additional experience after earning their PhDs before venturing out into the job market.

They are essential to the research mission and Fred Hutch competes with other institutions to hire the best. The Basic Sciences Division will host a three-day symposium in September for prospective postdocs to learn more about opportunities at Fred Hutch.

Of the 68 postdocs who left Fred Hutch in 2022 to launch their careers in science, 62 percent moved on to research jobs in academia, for-profit companies, nonprofit organizations and government.

Just 15 percent of Fred Hutch postdocs in 2022 were hired in tenure-track academic positions – the traditional route to becoming a principal investigator in charge of a lab.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation award makes that journey easier.

“Launching thriving independent research labs in academia has become a more and more daunting prospect,” Malik said. “Not only is the project a validation of the foundation 's hope and confidence in the merit of Phoebe's research program, but the financial boost that this award provides will enable her to be bolder in launching her independent research program and recruiting equally bold members to her future lab.”
