Traditional Prelicensure Clinical Nursing Program

The Traditional Prelicensure Clinical Nursing Program (TPCNP) is a full-time, upper-division nursing program designed for students who want to become a Registered Nurse (RN) and are completing their first bachelor’s degree. Students pursuing this pathway complete prerequisite coursework and then apply for advancement to the upper-division clinical nursing program. Students selected for advancement complete the upper-division clinical nursing program in either a 16-month year-round schedule or a 24-month academic year schedule. Graduates will earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and are eligible to sit for the NCLEX-RN to gain RN licensure.

There are two ways to advance into the upper-division clinical nursing program: Direct Admission and Competitive Admission . Direct admission is offered to incoming first-year students who meet specific admission criteria. Directly admitted students must meet Continuing Eligibility Criteria while attending ASU to advance into the upper-division clinical program. Directly admitted nursing students who do not meet continuing eligibility criteria, transfer students, or students who are changing majors may apply for advancement to the upper-division nursing program, competing for any remaining spaces.

The upper-division clinical nursing program starts three times per year in the summer, fall and spring terms. There are two advancement cycles each year for three TPCNP cohorts. Below are the deadlines to apply for advancement into the upper-division clinical nursing program for each TPCNP cohort.

These deadlines do not apply to incoming students who are not ready to apply for advancement.

Cohort Start Schedule Advancement Application Deadline
Summer Cohort 16-month year-round February 1
Fall Cohort 24-month academic year February 1
Spring Cohort 24-month academic year September 1

Direct admission to the nursing major is available to first-year student applicants who meet eligibility requirements. Students directly admitted to nursing who meet Continuing Eligibility Criteria while attending ASU are guaranteed a space in the upper-division clinical nursing program.

Direct Admission Requirements The admission standards for majors in the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation are higher than minimum university standards. First-year admission requirements are:

  • top 10% of high school graduating class OR
  • GPA of 3.80 in ASU competency courses (based on 4.00 grading scale) OR
  • GPA of 3.50 in ASU competency courses AND either a 25 ACT or 1230 SAT combined evidence-based reading and writing plus math score

Priority Application Date: November 1

First-year admission applications to the Bachelor of Science in nursing program that are received after the November 1 application priority date are considered on a space-available basis. Students not offered admission directly to the nursing program are placed in the BS program in community health.

First-year applicants should select an additional major when applying for admission. English language proficiency requirements for applicants whose native language is not English:

  • minimum score of 540 (paper-based), 207 (computer-based), or 76 (internet-based) on the TOEFL
  • minimum overall band of 6.5 with no band below 5.5 on the IELTS

Nursing applicants who do not meet the above requirements will be admitted to our community health major. Community health students complete coursework that mirrors the nursing prerequisites, and may apply through the competitive application process for vacant seats in the nursing program that have not been filled by direct admission students. There is no guarantee vacant seats will be available.

Continuing Eligibility Criteria Continuing Eligibility Criteria (CEC) are reviewed annually and subject to change.

  • Enroll in the courses following the published course sequence on the BSN Nursing major map.
  • 3.50 minimum critical (prerequisite) course GPA each semester.
  • Courses taken at institutions other than ASU, during the required semester, must have the grades recorded on the ASU system by the final grading deadline (degree conferral dates) per the ASU Academic Calendar.
  • Grades of C or better in critical (prerequisite) courses.
  • Successful completion of all Health and Safety Requirements .

Steps to Apply

  • Visit ASU . Schedule a campus tour. The traditional nursing program is currently available at the Downtown Phoenix and West campuses. Beginning in fall 2023, the nursing major will also be available at the Polytechnic campus.
  • Apply to ASU . On the application, select “Nursing, BSN” as your major of interest. Complete all ASU Admission Services requirements.
  • My ASU . Check your My ASU account for updates on your admission and next steps to enroll.
  • Next Steps . Take your next steps to become a Sun Devil.

After Direct Admission students are placed into the upper-division clinical nursing program, any remaining spaces will be available to competitive applicants. Selection is based on Select GPA and score on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). Spaces are limited and placement is not guaranteed. There is no guarantee spaces will be available through the Competitive Application Process.

First bachelor’s degree-seeking students, including current ASU students and transfer students, are eligible to apply through the competitive process. Interested students who already have a bachelor's degree in another discipline should consider applying to the Accelerated BSN or the MS Nursing (Entry to Nursing Practice) program.

To learn more about admission requirements, prerequisite courses, the selection process, selection data and more, review the nursing information packet and attend either a pre-recorded or live-hosted nursing information session .

If selected for advancement, each clinical nursing student must submit proof they meet health and safety requirements. While Edson College strives to give students as much notice as possible regarding changes to health and safety standards, these requirements are subject to change to ensure compliance with our clinical partners. For more details, refer to the nursing information packet .
