1. The CIMA case study exams: the basics

“At what stage do I sit these exams?”

In your CIMA journey, there are three case studies you’ll have to conquer (unless you have a relevant CIMA exemption). 

The first case study you’ll take is the Operational Case Study (OCS). We’ll go into more detail about what’s assessed in this case study shortly, but for now, you just need to know that you’ll take this once you’ve passed your P1, E1 and F1 exams (or online assessments if you’re on the FLP route). 

Once this is out of the way, you can then return to the familiar ground of objective tests (or online assessments), as you’ll take P2, E2 and F2. When you’ve passed these, you’ll have to take another case study exam – this time, the Management Case Study (MCS). Note, if you are a Master’s Gateway student, the MCS is known as the CIMA Gateway Exam.

The final case study in your CIMA journey will be the Strategic Case Study (SCS), and you’ll sit this once you’ve passed P3, E3 and F3.

“But what exactly are case study exams?”

You’ll have probably gathered by now that case study exams are different to the other CIMA exams. But how so? Here are the key points:

To qualify for the pass guarantee you need to ensure you complete ALL of the following steps. Failure to complete all of these steps will mean you will not qualify.

View & Print:

1. Click the “View + Print” link to view the study text.

2.  Wait  for all of the pages to load , this can sometimes take a couple of minutes depending on the size of the document (scroll to the last page to ensure that every page loads).

Updating to the latest  version of flash can help to resolve some people’s printing issues ( download the latest version of flash .)

If your document fails to load, try clearing your cache and browser history. If your documents still do not load it may be due to the network you are on. We suggest trying to print on a different network.

If you still cannot print your document we suggest using a different computer and/or printer in case you are experiencing a hardware issue.

Entry requirements

To gain entry to the Strategic Case Study exam you must have passed E3, P3 and F3 or have been awarded the relevant exemptions to allow you to write the Strategic Case Study exam.

Each level of the CIMA Professional Qualification culminates in a Case Study Examination, which integrates the knowledge, skills and techniques from across the three pillars into one synoptic capstone examination. The case study exam is set to mirror a real business environment. It simulates what management accountants do in the workplace. The case relates to a fictionalised organisation, based on real business or industry.

At the Strategic level, the role simulated is that of the senior finance manager. The Case Study Examination provides a simulated context which allows learners to demonstrate that they have acquired the required knowledge, skills, techniques and mindset for that role.

Exams and sittings

Each case study exam is a three hour long computer based exam. There are four windows a year when you can sit your case study exams (February, May, August and November). Within each window, exams will be available for three days from Wednesday to Friday. Exams can be sat at a Pearson Vue exam centre or at home. Information about a fictitious company is released 7 weeks prior to the exam, which forms the basis of your Case Study exam and is called the 'pre-seen material'.

To qualify: To qualify for our Pass Assured Promise, you need to have submitted all five progress tests and achieve 50% or higher on your mock exam, and have attempted your final exam within 3 months of having received your study material.

Our promise: If you are unsuccessful in your exam, you may book and commence a free online course within 3 months of having taken the relevant exam.

Special note: You will not receive any new study material for your subject.

Online Courses - OT

To qualify for our Pass Assured Promise, must complete and submit steps 1 to 6 of the Achievement Ladder by the relevant submission dates and score at least 70% on each step, before they sit their OT exam which must take place within 3 weeks of the official course completion date (refer to the OCR timetable 'finish date').

Online Courses - Case Study

To qualify for our Pass Assured Promise, must complete and submit steps 1 to 5 of the Achievement Ladder by the relevant submission dates and score at least 40% on each step. You also need to have sat the exam relevant to your sitting (i.e. May CS).

CIMA - Professional Qualification: Strategic Level

The strategic level is the final level of the professional qualification and consists of four exams, outlined below., by passing the level, and approval of your cima practical experience requirement, you will gain the cima professional qualification and your cgma designation..

For the CIMA 2019 syllabus we have developed two packages for the CIMA Strategic Level Objective Test exams:

 - htft live : scheduled live online sessions, supported by topic recordings, to guide you through,  - htft on-demand : engage with the full suite of htft resources, at your pace.

In its simplest form we have flipped the classroom for CIMA.

That is, we provide you with a series of pre-recorded cima topic related videos that we ask to you watch before a series of timetabled live masterclasses (timetables on the right hand side), where the time with your dedicated tutor focuses on the application of knowledge and question practice rather than teaching you content you will have developed by watching the pre-recorded videos., everything we deliver (including the masterclasses) is recorded, so throughout your course you will be able to go and re-watch everything that we have created together. this forms the content for our on-demand courses., all of our resources are built using our own htft student notes, and whilst we send out the cima approved books – they are to be used as additional study resources., non-uk based students  - electronic copy of the cima approved materials (study text, exam, pocket notes) are included in the cost of the course. hard copies are available, however they will incur additional postage costs are: eu students: £29, rest of the world: £44., delivery time are approximately 5-7 days. should you decide to buy your own cima approved materials, £6 will be deducted from your invoice. please ensure this is detailed at the time of enrolment., we have also developed:,  - htft play : catch up on your studies, stream topic recordings and test your proficiency ,   to find out more about htft play visit our dedicated page , or our online shop, for the cima 2019 syllabus we have developed three packages for the cima strategic level case study exam:,  - htft live :  11 scheduled live online sessions (weekend mornings and weekday evenings), all focused on the cima pre-seen,  - htft resit : focused resources and support to help you get that pass.
