Uber Has Just Completed 3 Years In India, And Its Story Reads Like A Bollywood Potboiler

It’s become second nature to whip out your phone to book a cab, but it wasn’t possible until a few years ago.

In 2009, the first Uber cab ride took place in San Francisco. Four years later, in August 2013, the first Uber ride took place in India. Back then, Uber wasn’t quite the startup behemoth that it is now, but it was young and hungry. It already operated in 19 countries around the world, and it had its eyes set on India – a market that had the potential to become one of the biggest in the world.

Since that first ride in Bangalore, Uber’s added 27 more cities in the country, and found 400,000 driver partners. It’s also been the subject of a rape controversy, been banned , been unbanned , launched Uber for autos, found a worthy competitor , become the most valuable startup in the world, launched Uber for bikes , pulled back Uber for bikes, been sued by the government, sued a competitor, been sued by a competitor, had its cabs impounded , had drivers stone its office, been reprimanded by politicians, fought for surge pricing, and in a bizarre set of circumstances, become an investor in its biggest rival.

And if the company is to be believed, it’s only getting started.

Uber’s entry into India was much like its entry in countries around the world. Small teams of “international launchers” moved swiftly from city to city, living out of suitcases and hotel rooms, and setting up Uber’s operations. Customers were initially roped in through the promise of high-end cars for jaw-dropping fares. Uber’s financial muscle, propped by VC dollars, came in handy. People raved about getting rides in Audis at the price of an auto.

What followed was a lesson in growth hacking that’ll be taught in college courses in the years to come. Uber began offering referral discount codes, and urban India lapped them up. People got free rides if they could get friends to sign up, and Facebook feeds and Twitter timelines were filled with eagerly-shared codes, all hoping to turn into free rides. Users turned evangelists, word spread, and Uber grew.

To be sure, Uber wasn’t the first company in India to offer cab rides through an app. In early 2013, Ola had already pivoted from being an intracity cab supplier to an on-demand model, and TaxiForSure would implement the model soon after. But being in Bangalore, it felt like the cab revolution arrived with Uber.

Nearly a year later, tragedy struck.

In Delhi, Uber driver Shiv Kumar Yadav raped his 27 year old woman passenger. Delhi was already stinging from the horrific Nirbhaya rape case from two years ago, and the public outcry was immediate. There was slogan shouting and protests on the streets. The Delhi government swung into action. Puzzled policemen tried to figure out Uber’s business model, and wondered how a team of three employees was running this entire operation business in Delhi. Damningly for Uber, the driver was a repeat offender, having been booked for a rape 7 months prior. Uber was banned in the city and its offices were shut down.

It was hard to pinpoint exactly when Uber was back in Delhi, but it was. Uber’s been in tough situations the world over, but it always seems to be back. Maybe it’s the value proposition the company provides, or perhaps it is its tenacity, but Uber seems to always wriggle out of difficult situations.

It needed all its wriggling skills when it launched UberMOTO – its bike taxi service – in Bangalore. Within a few hours of its service going live, Ola launched its own bike taxis in the city. Things seemed to run fine for a while, but the Karnataka government was having none of it. It turned out that bike taxis weren’t covered under the law in the state, and the government issued a diktat asking them to be called off the streets. Ola complied, but Uber did something that exemplified its hard-to-kill nature – it rebranded its bike taxis as bike shares and stopped earning money from the rides. While Ola’s bikes sat in garages, Uber’s bikes were out on the roads, earning valuable market share, if no money.

It’s antics like these that Uber’s detractors latch on to while criticizing the company. Its biggest rival, Ola, has gone as far as to call it a “foreign firm which is only motivated by profit” in a court affidavit. Ola currently leads the cab hailing market in India by most estimates, operates in thrice as many cities as Uber, but is constantly looking over its shoulder. Uber pushes the boundaries of the law and pulls rabbits out of hats.

Ola, for its part, has done well to ward off Uber’s attacks. India is one of few countries in the world where Uber isn’t the market leader. Uber’s already thrown in the towel in towel in China, and that makes India doubly important for the company.

In what was perhaps a testament to India’s place in Uber’s scheme of plans, CEO Travis Kalanick landed up in India early this year. Kalanick has had a long association in India, having ended spent a month in Varkala beach in Kerala while coding for a previous startup. It was a fact that he brought up several times as he went on a charm offensive, meeting dignitaries, giving talks at IITs, and posing for cutesy pictures on local Mumbai buses.

But Kalanick’s coming to India wouldn’t end its troubles with the government. Karnataka proved to be a constant thorn in Uber’s side, first pulling up cab aggregators for running without licesnses, and then being unhappy with its surge pricing laws. Uber was nearly banned in Karnataka, but managed to get its compliances at the last minute. Delhi followed Karnataka’s lead, with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal personally tweeting that cab aggregators wouldn’t be allowed to charge surge prices. Uber dilly dallied, nearly got banned, but ended up toeing the government’s line.

That has been the story of Uber in India – give and take, one step forward two steps back. It’s fought battles with everyone it’s come in contact with – governments have been suspicious, rivals have been litigious, and even its driver partners have at times turned against it. Its detractors call its tactics unlawful and underhanded. Yet it marches on, having now become the most valuable startup in the world. Love it or hate it, it’s made an impact on the world.

नई दिल्ली. देश में कोरोना वायरस (Coronavirus) संकट के बीच टैक्सी सेवाएं (Taxi Services) उपलब्ध कराने वाली कंपनी ओला (Ola) और उबर (Uber) ने कुछ शर्तों के साथ अपनी सेवाएं शुरू कर दी हैं. Ola ने बुधवार से 160 और UBER ने 49 शहरों में सेवाएं शुरू की हैं. दोनों ही कंपनियां ऑनलाइन माध्यम से सेवाएं देती हैं. केंद्र सरकार ने लॉकडाउन के चौथे चरण में टैक्सी सेवाएं कुछ शर्तों के साथ चालू करने का निर्णय लिया था. हालांकि, टेक्सी सेवाओं को लेकर अंतिम निर्णय अभी भी राज्य सरकारों को ही लेने हैं. उबर इंडिया और ओला दोनों ने इसके लिए दिशा-निर्देश जारी किए हैं. इसके तहत पूल सेवा पर फिलहाल प्रतिबंध है. एक समय में अधिकतम दो ही यात्री सवारी कर सकेंगे. ड्राइवरों के लिए बनाए गए नियमों के अनुसार- (1) किसी कंटेनमेंट जोन में कैब नहीं जाएगी. (2)  साथ ही सभी ड्राइवरों के लिए राइड के दौरान मास्क पहना अनिवार्य है (3)  अपनी यात्रा शुरू करने से पहले सेल्फी खींचकर ऐप के जरिए ओला APP पर डालनी होगी. (4)  ड्राइवरों को राइड के दौरान अपने पास मास्क और सैनिटाइजर रखने होंगे. हर राइड के बाद ड्राइवर को कार के कॉमन एरिया जैसे कि हैंडल सीट जैसी जगहों को सैनिटाइज करना जरूरी होगा. (5)  ओला के नियम के अनुसार इवर और यात्री दोनों के पास यह विकल्प होगा कि दोनों में से किसी ने मास्क नहीं पहना है तो यात्रा रद्द की जा सकती है. यात्रियों के लिए बनाए 5 नियम - (1) यात्रियों के लिए भी कुछ नियम बनाए हैं, जिसके अनुसार यात्रा के दौरान हर यात्री को मास्क पहनना अनिवार्य होगा. (2)  साथ ही यात्रा शुरू होने से पहले सैनिटाइज करना भी जरूरी होगा. (3)  हर यात्रा के दौरान कार का एसी बंद रहेगा और खिड़कियां खुली रहेंगी. ताकि हवा के रिसर्कुलेशन से बचा जा सकेगा. (4)  यात्रा में 2 यात्रियों से ज्यादा की इजाजत नहीं होगी और दोनों यात्रियों को पिछली सीट पर खिड़की की तरफ ही बैठना होगा. (5)  इसके अलावा सोशल डिस्टेंसिंग के तहत समान चढ़ाने और उतारने का काम यात्री को खुद करना होगा.साथ ही ड्राइवर और यात्रियों में कम से कम संपर्क हो इसके कैशलेस पेमेंट जरूरी की जाए. 25 मार्च से बंद थी सेवाएं बता दें के ओला और उबर ने 25 मार्च को लॉकडाउन लागू करने के बाद से अपनी सेवाओं को स्थगित कर दिया था. हालांकि, अब लॉकडाउन में आंशिक छूट के बाद ओला ने देश के करीब 160 शहरों में अपनी सर्विस को दोबारा शुरू कर दी है. सभी कैब ड्राइवर को मास्क पहनना और हैंड सैनिटाइजर रखना जरुरी किया गया है. कोई भी राइड शुरु करने से पहले चालक को मास्क पहन कर एप्प पर अपनी सेल्फी अपलोड करनी होगी, लेकिन अभी तक ये क्लीयर नहीं किया गया है कि इस सेल्फी में सवारी या कस्टमर के मास्क का फोटो भी आएगा? Ola और UBER सोशल डिस्टेंसिंग को कैसे अमल में लाएगी?  लॉकडाउन के दौरान ओला और उबर किस तरह से सोशल डिस्टेंसिंग को अमल में लाएगी और इसके लिए क्या-क्या कदम उठाए हैं. इसी बात को समझने के लिए जब न्यूज 18 हिंदी ने ओला से संपर्क किया तो पब्लिक रिलेशन डिपार्टमेंट ने ईमेल या व्हाटसएप पर प्रश्न भेजने को कहा. मंगलवार शाम 7 बजे ओला ने फोन कर कन्फर्म किया कि वह फिलहाल इन प्रश्नों का जवाब नहीं भेज सकता. क्या कहना है ओला और उबर का इसी तरह उबर इंडिया के एक बड़े अधिकारी के मुताबिक, 'हमने कोरोना महामारी को ध्यान में रखते हुए उन्नत तरीके का एक साॉफ्टवेयर विकसित किया है. यह सॉफ्टवेयर पहले की तुलना में ज्यादा एडवांस है. कोरोना को लेकर यूरोपियन कंट्री में जो सावधानी बरती जा रही है वही सारे टुल्स इस सॉफ्टवेयर में भी दिए गए हैं. हम इंडिया में भी एडवांस टेक्नोलॉजी के साथ उबर एप शुरू कर दिए हैं.' उबर के ग्लोबल सीनियर डायरेक्टर (उत्पाद प्रबंधन) सचिन कंसल न्यूज 18 हिंदी को बताया, 'पिछले दो महीनों में हमारी वैश्विक तकनीक टीम और सेफ्टी टीम ने कड़ी मेहनत से यह ऐप तैयार की है. राइडर्स और ड्राइवरों के लिए एक नया उत्पाद बनाने के लिए कठिन मेहनत किया गया है. भारत ने अपने लॉकडाउन को आसान बना दिया है. अब यह महत्वपूर्ण है कि हम सभी आवश्यक सावधानी बरतें और अपने आप को सुरक्षित रखने में मदद करें और अगली यात्रा को सुरक्षित बनाएं. इन नई सुविधाओं और नीतियों को वैश्विक स्तर पर अमल में लाया जा रहा है. हम सभी के लिए एक सुरक्षित उत्पाद अनुभव सुनिश्चित करने के लिए आवश्यकतानुसार उन्हें बढ़ाते और संशोधित करते रहेंगे.' ऐप में हुए हैं कई बदलाव बता दें कि उबर ने 20 तारीख से सवारी और ड्राइवरों को ऐप में कई बदलाव किए हैं. गो ऑनलाइन चैकलिस्ट पर जा कर ड्राइवर सुरक्षा के उपाए अपनाए हैं कि नहीं. फेस मास्क पहना है कि नहीं. इनको वेरिफाई कर सकते हैं. इस तरह की कई चैकलिस्ट राइडर्स के लिए बनाई गई हैं. हर ट्रिप से पहले राइडर्स को पुष्टि करनी होगी कि उन्होंने जरूरी एहतियात बरते हैं या नहीं. मास्क वैरिफिकेशन, सभी के लिए जवाबदेही, अपडेटेड कैंसिलेशन पॉलिसी, नई सीट लिमिट और राइडशेयर स्वास्थ्य सुरक्षा पर विशेष ध्यान दिया गया है.' ये भी पढ़ें- UP के बाद दिल्ली में कांग्रेस ने केजरीवाल सरकार से मांगी 300 बसें चलाने की अनुमति

Cab aggregator Uber Technologies Inc. expects India to be among its profitable markets soon and is looking to add more modes of transport on the platform amid efforts to deal with service quality issues such as driver cancellations, according to a senior company official.

The company is seeking ‘outcome-focused regulation’ from the government, including reviewing some State-specific rules such as need for printers and physical meters in taxis. It is also advocating speedy implementation of code on social security as well as allowing two-wheeler and three-wheeler on platforms such as Uber across the country.

“India is a long term investment market for us,” Pradeep Parameswaran, Regional General Manager, Asia Pacific at Uber, told reporters at an interaction at the company’s office here.

“We are nearly 1,000 engineers in India building for the world. We have a large business presence...and have a very competitive market position against a pretty fierce local competitor,” he added.

He added that while the company was still in an investment mode, but “our unit economics has improved dramatically in the last few quarters. So I feel very, very good about where we are on that journey. And over time, I have no doubt that India will be a high growth market which will also be profitable...it's a steady march. I don't have exact timeline on when we will be profitable in India. But I'd say it's not it's not that far away.”

He noted that while India has been one of our better markets to work in from a regulatory standpoint, there are a “few pockets here and there” that still need to evolve.

Mike Orgill, Senior Director, Public Policy & Government Relations, APAC at Uber added that Code on Social Security is a great example of where a policy decision was made very quickly. However, the challenge now is getting the implementation done. “...not every country has figured out the issue of gig work and treatment...Australia has just starting to talk about it....India has a real opportunity to lead the world on this.”

Mr. Orgill added that a large majority of Indians still move around in two-wheelers and three-wheelers and there is a need for regulations that clearly enable such vehicles on the aggregator platform. He also stressed that as States enact aggregator rules, there is a need to ensure that these rules are focused on the outcomes. For instance, he said, Karnataka has rules that require every cab to be fitted with a physical GPS device, and a printer for physical receipt, while in West Bengal, autos and e-rickshaws cannot be onboarded on the platform and cabs need to have a roof taxi sign.

Mr Parameswaran pointed out that sometimes it's just hard sometimes to navigate regulations State by State as the company builds common technology, rules and common safety standards, and when that varies a lot by State, it becomes difficult to scale operation. “So, there's an opportunity to streamline that a bit more.”

Replying to a query on rising driver cancellations on Uber, he added that India is among the most challenged markets in the world in terms of service denial currently because of reasons such as no up front destination information, digital payment trips and increase in fuel prices. He added that the company has now addressed these challenges and in the about three weeks since implementation of new features such as destination transparent, drivers asking “jaana kahan hai (where do you want to go)” has reduced by 80%.

“At this point, we are still educating the drivers because we are still not where we want to be...not all drivers are aware of all the changes...I'd say on a scale of zero to 10, we're still sort of in early stages, but I'm very hopeful that with these changes over the next few months service quality should change dramatically,” he added.

According to a new study done by Public First, a global strategic consultancy, and commissioned by Uber, “In 2021, Uber unlocked an estimated ₹44,600 crore in economic value for the Indian economy. This includes both the impact of earnings of driver-partners and the wider indirect and induced multiplier effect created throughout the company’s wider supply chain.”

• How much is the net  profit (loss) per annum?
• What is the return on investment ( ROI ) of Ola Uber cab?

So lets start with their income model first…

#1. How Ola Uber cab drivers earn income on daily basis?

The money is earned by the cab owner in the following ways:

• Cash received from passengers
• Incentives received from Ola Uber

Payments are made by the passengers in form of hard cash or online through wallets.

This is one mode of income which happens after every ride.

[Note: Payments received in the wallets are paid to the cab owner within next 2 days of receipt]

The second mode of payment is by  incentives .

Incentives are also received online by the cab owner from Ola and Uber.

#1.1 Cash Received from Passengers

Suppose a passenger orderd for a Ola cab for airport drop from his residence.

The total bill for the airtport drop is Rs.165.

The passenger pay these Rs.165 (in cash or through online wallet) to the cab driver after the end of the trip.

But all of this Rs.165 is not the cab drivers income.

Following charges are deducted from this bill:

• Commission of Ola Uber (20%) – Rs.33
• GST @ 5% – Rs.8.3

After these deductions, the net cash received by the cab driver (Rs.124) is shown below:

#1.2 Incentive received from Ola Uber

The incentives received from Ola Uber is what makes this business interesting.

It is this incentive portion which actually makes the Ola Uber business model profitable for the cab drivers (operators).

The incentive model is kept very hush-hush by Ola Uber from common public.

Though they do not try to hide it, but I have realised that they do not circulate the information about incentive freely in their websites.

Hence, I was forced to do some fishing for this information on internet.

I am not sure how reliable or updates in this information.

But I think it will not be too far away from the reality.

The incentive received by the cab driver is based on MBG.

What is MBG?

MBG is “Minimum Business Guarantee”.

What does it mean?

Ola Uber guarantees a minimum business (revenue per day) to every Cab driver.

If that revenue is not reached, Ola Uber will pay the balance amount as  top-up to the cab driver.

The revenue based incentive model (of Ola Uber is like this):

• Minimum daily revenue of  1500 . But this incentive will be applicable only if the cab driver has generated an operator’s bill of minimum Rs.800+.
• Minimum daily revenue of  2100 . But this incentive will be applicable only if the cab driver has generated an operator’s bill of minimum Rs.1300+.
• Minimum daily revenue of  3000 . But this incentive will be applicable only if the cab driver has generated an operator’s bill of minimum Rs.1900+.
• Minimum daily revenue of  4500 . But this incentive will be applicable only if the cab driver has generated an operator’s bill of minimum Rs.2400+.
• Minimum daily revenue of  5200 . But this incentive will be applicable only if the cab driver has generated an operator’s bill of minimum Rs.2700+.
• Minimum daily revenue of  6000 . But this incentive will be applicable only if the cab driver has generated an operator’s bill of minimum Rs.3100+.

So based on this incentive model, lets see how much a cab driver can earn on daily basis:

#1.3 Total income of cab owner per annum.

Based on the total earning of the cab driver per day, per year income can be computed.

Following has been assumed to arrive at the annual yearning:

• Number of days worked / month – 25
• Number of month worked / year – 12

So lets see what will be the total revenue of the Ola Uber cab driver:

#2. What are the costs involved to run Ola Uber cabs?

Till now what we have seen is only the income part of the Ola Uber cab business.

But in order to run a cab, some cost also needs to be incurred.

Before going into the calculation part, I would like to make a point.

A cab which has zero loan balance can prove very profitable for Ola Uber cab business.

But for my cost calculation part, I have assumed that the driver has purchased as new car (Maruti Swift) and attached it to Ola.

Lets see the various costs involved to run the Ola Uber cab business…

#2.1 Cost of Car Loan

I have assumed that the driver has opted to buy a new car (Suzuki Swift).

On road price of this car will be approximately Rs.5,80,000.

I have also assumed that the cab driver puts Rs.25,000 from his pocket to buy this car.

Following are the details of the loan:

• Loan amount – Rs.5,55,000
• Tenure – 5 Years
• Interest – 9.5% per annum
• Loan EMI – Rs.11,656
• Loan processing fees – Rs.2,775 (one time cost).

The total annual cost of this car loan will be Rs.1,42,647. The calculation is as below:

#2.2 Cost of Daily Running of Cab

I have assued the following cost in the head of “Daily Cost”

• Daily  fuel (diesel/CNG/Petrol) expense.
• Daily  wage paid to the driver

As this is one of the biggest cost, I have tried to keep my assumptions as realistic as possible.

Unfortunately, I was not able to get a confirmed value of these expenses.

Hence, I decided to use the following rule of thumb:

• Minimum wage of driver : Rs.600/day or  30% of daily operators bill (whichever is higher).
• Minimum cost of fuel :  35% of daily operators bill.

With these assumptions in mind, lets see what will be the total daily cost of operation:

#2.3 Mandatory Costs like Insurance and Income Tax etc.

For cab to continue to operate on road, it is mandatory for it to have the receipts of the following:

• Updated Car  insurance
• Tax payment receipt.
• Car  permit renewal receipt.

For cabs, whose daily running is more than other cars, I have assumed a slightly higher insurance premium than normal.

For tax part, I have considered income tax and professional tax.

I am sure car permit renewal is not a very cost incenttive activity. I assume it will be between Rs.1000-1200.

#2.4 Cost of Car Maintenance

As this is a cab service, it is essential to keep the car under working condition each day. C

To achieve this target, regular annual maintenance of the car cannot be ignored. Compared to a normal passenger car, a cab will have a higher annual maintenance cost.

The annual maintenance of the car will have the following costs:

• Scheduled  servicing and oil change.
• Four  tyre change once every year.
• Miscellaneous maintenance needs.

Lets see what will be the total annual maintenance cost of the cab…

#2.5 All Cost attached with runniner a Ola Uber Can is as below:

• Cost of Car Loan – Rs. 1,42,647
• Cost of Car’s Daily Run – Rs.3,09,938
• Cost of Car Insurance & Tax – Rs. 41,486
• Cost of Car Maintenence – Rs.40,329
• Total Cost – Rs. 5,34,400

#3. What is the net Profit/Loss made by the Cab Operator?

Net Profit = Total Income – Total Cost

In order to arrive at a conclusion on profit, we have considered several cases.

Study of these cases made us realise that, in order to increase the profit, cab drivers/owners must do the following:

• They must pick longer rides (higher billing values).
• They must pick more trips per day.

With lower billing valves and lesser number of trips, there are more chances to incur losses.

See the below chart:

Important Notes:

• For lower bill values, driver must do more number of trips per day to make profit.
• For a Given MBG Plan (like 2100 shown in the chart), lower is the number of trips the better.
• For every jump in MBG Plan (like from 2100 too 3000), there is a dramatic increase in profit (see the above chart).
• For higher bill values, driver can do less number of trips per day to make profit.

#4. Return on Investment (ROI)

To calculate the ROI of the invested-money in Ola and Uber, I have assumed the following:

• Car is purchased on loan.
• Cost of Maruti Swift (of Rs.580,000), is used for calculation.
• Average bill amount of Rs.165 for all rides done in a day.
• Car was sold after 5 years of usage at Rs.150,000.

Now, in order to calculate the ROI, following 4 cases has been considered:

• Case1 – MBG Plan Applicable: Rs.2100, No of rides: 12
• Case2 – MBG Plan Applicable: Rs.2100, No of rides: 13
• Case3 – MBG Plan Applicable: Rs.3000, No of rides: 17
• Case4 – MBG Plan Applicable: Rs.3000, No of rides: 18

The calculated ROI for the above 4 cases are like this:

• Case1 – 12.68%
• Case2 – 9.96%
• Case3 – 38.64%
• Case4 – 35.92%

India’s Rapido becomes a unicorn with fresh $120M funding

Bike-taxi startup Rapido is the latest Indian startup to become a unicorn, meaning it reached $1 billion in valuation. The 8-year-old firm has raised $120 million in a new funding round led by WestBridge Capital, according to a regulatory filing.

The new capital, a Series E infusion, underscores Rapido’s growing prominence in India’s mobility sector where it has emerged as a formidable challenger to the long-standing duopoly of Uber and Ola. It is simultaneously also helping Swiggy’s competitive stance against rival Zomato in the fiercely contested food-delivery market.

Swiggy led Rapido’s last round in April 2022, which valued the mobility startup at $800 million . Rapido has raised about $430 million to date.

Rapido’s focus on two-wheeler transportation, instead of cabs, has allowed it to navigate the challenges that have hindered the growth of traditional cab-hailing services in India, capitalizing on the widespread use of motorcycles and scooters in the country’s congested urban centers.

Rapido didn’t respond to a request for comment.

In Rapido, Swiggy has found a delivery partner that is helping it serve the growing food delivery orders in the country. Rapido is able to provide its drivers more work opportunity through its tie-up with Swiggy, according to an investor of Rapido, who requested anonymity discussing strategy. Swiggy eventually plans to increase its stake in Rapido, according to a person familiar with the situation, but not before the IPO.

Rapido also engaged with Khazanah , Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund, for funding in the current round, TechCrunch previously reported.

Swiggy has filed for an initial public offering , seeking to raise $1.25 billion from the event.

Rapido is the third Indian startup to become a unicorn this year after fintech Perfios and AI upstart Krutrim .
