Drug addiction is bad. Doctors give us drugs when we are unwell. We don’t take drugs without a doctor’s advice. Parents give us medicines to fight germs. They give drugs in fever, cold and cough. Taking too much medicine is bad. Green vegetables keep us healthy. Eating apples keeps doctors away. We drink milk daily to fight germs. We wash our hands before we eat and sleep. We do not take drugs when healthy and strong. Wrong medicines make us unhealthy. Right drugs fight a fever. Eating junk food makes us unwell. Drinking clean water keeps us healthy. Healthy children need no medicines and drugs.

Depression and bitterness dry up the lively meadow of their tender minds. Life deceives theni, very coylessly. Then they indulge in drug-addiction and seek salvation of the soul therin. But death rescues them for good.

It must be mentioned, however, that sometimes innocent, foolish young chaps are ensnared by greedy rich drug-dealers. They want neither death nor addiction. But the wickedness of some avaricious dishonest businessmen cause them to die a premature death.

The Consequences of drug addiction : The consequence of drug-addiction is certain death. But it is no normal death. That death is characterized by agonies and pains. Addicted people are deprived of the opportunity to die at a time; they die little by little. The deadly effects of drugs damage the nervous system of the brain with the result that their memory power begins to collapse. The whole body becomes inactive.

But since addiction always needs to be fueled, addicted persons cannot stay away from drugs. The more they take drugs, the more they become dependent on them. A time comes when they feel that it is drugs which are giving them life. Thus they continue taking more and more drugs, and drugs go on envenoming their bodies more and more. They use drugs; drugs use them. At last drugs win the battle. The addicted people die.

If we look at other consequences of drugaddiction, we must say that it is even more destructive than death. Those who once become drug-addicted, become almost mad to get the money needed to buy more drugs. This, in the first place, necessitates them to squeeze their family wealth and money.

When they fall short of money, they take up arms and fall on people. Thus, they hunt for money illegally, which cause others' distress, even death. Thus people's lives are threatened, peace is broken in the community. The system of law and order degenerate. The whole society suffers.

How this problem can be solved : A number of effective measures need to be taken to solve this problem. Of them, the first and foremost step is to ensure that no drugs can be smuggled into the country. If there is any deficiency in the law in this regard, it must be reconsidered. Simultaneously, the young generation of the country is to be made aware of the dangers of drug-addiction.

They must be warned against its consequences. Drug Addiction: Causes and Remedies

Drug addiction in India, in recent times, has assumed menacing proportions and the evil is increasing by leaps and bounds. It is widespread, extending even in the hostels and campuses of the universities and technical and professional institutions of the country.

The young minds of today have been fascinated by the drugs and intoxicants. These drugs have taken the toll of several thousand innocent young lives in India as well as abroad. The drug mafia has spread its influence in all the five continents and every city, rural area or semi-urban conglomeration could be possible target of drug peddlers. The human race would be completely destroyed if the young boys and girls were to remain addicted to drugs.

Charas, ganja, heroin, smack or brown sugar, bhang, sedatives, stimulants, narcotics, nicotine, analgesics, opiates, tranquilizers , hallucinogens and LSD are in great demand and are purchased at exorbitant prices.

Drugs penetrate deeper into mind and psyche of the youth even if taken once. A single dose of drug forces the user to consume more drugs and in higher doses. This habit-forming tendency leads to excessive consumption of drugs.

Initially, only a small quantity of drugs is able to soothe the consumer. He goes to cloud nine and feels relaxed and calm. But when the effect of the drug withers away, the body mechanism demands more of the drug. The drug is able to capture the mind and the body. After a few years, even large doses are also not able to lead to relaxation and the ‘cloud nine feeling”. Hence, the user consumes very heavy dosages and thus, he loses control over his body-and -mind occur in the extreme cases in which the user becomes a drug addict and consumes the drug for 10-18 years. The end of the drug addict is very painful. Taking of drugs is a great evil.

A number of causes are responsible for the evil. In many homes, growing boys and girls do not get the love care and attention which they should get at this tender age. Often both the parents are in service and have no time to look after their children.

In other cases, the husband and the wife are not on good terms with each other. They often quarrel, the quarrels increase in intensity and violence and life at home becomes most unhappy and unpleasant. Such quarrels may lead even to divorce and the breaking up of the family. In some cases, the father remains busy in his business or office work and the mother remains too busy in her own social life to look after the children.

The result is that young people in such homes feel lonely and neglected. They feel frustrated. Deprived totally of parental love and affection, they seek consolation elsewhere. They go astray and their so-called friends who are themselves drug-addicts, mislead them and induce them. at least, to have a taste of it. The drug-sellers exploit them fully. Drugs are provided quite cheap to them in the beginning but the price goes on increasing as this evil habit takes hold of them and they can no longer do without drugs.

Drug addiction is an acute problem which has defied all efforts made for its solutions so far. The drug addict cannot do without the drug even for a short while and the habit goes on increasing and soon the addict finds himself a helpless victim of this degrading habit. He must get his dose of it at the fixed time and if he does not get it, he weeps and cries and becomes incapable of performing the least movement. The result is that he borrows money or he steals it from his own home or from any other place which may be within his reach. He or she is exploited in various ways by his or her so-called friends or the sellers of these drugs The drug addicts steal and quarrel with their parents and other members of !he family, so much so that the life in the home becomes a hell. Often the evil results in suicide and the ruin of the whole family. The only beneficiaries are the vendors of these drugs who thrive while their victims perish.

Alcohol is habit-forming and is not so harmful if not taken in excess. The flushing and cleansing effect of alcohol is well known. But some boys and girls consume too much of the same and hence diseases like liver failure, renal problems and strains on the heart have been detected among them. Many researchers have proved that alcohol is also responsible for development of certain types of cancers. Alcohol may be taken in moderation but if it becomes an addiction it is harmful.

Tobacco is a great killer. It falls under the drug category ‘nicotine’. Nicotine consumption is habit-forming. Tobacco users fall prey to oral cancer, lung cancer, high blood pressure, angina and heart attacks. Normally, the end comes twenty years after the first usage. Many young people are able to avoid it or leave it after consuming for a few years. But normally they are not able to quit smoking and chewing tobacco. It is unfortunate that many school-going girl students also resort to smoking and eventually they suffer due to miscarriage or birth disorders of their babies. This phenomenon is very prominent in the West.

Tea and coffee are mild drugs. They are flushed out of human body after a few hours of consumption. But excessive consumption of tea and coffee invites ulcers, acidity, liver disorders, stomach ache, jaundice and indigestion. If taken in limited quantity these drugs are not harmful.

‘Drug consumption is the biggest bane for the society. The drug addict falls into the evil nets of drug peddling, illicit sex, AIDS and criminal activities. He or she is never able to come out of this vicious circle.

Complete eradication of this evil is the urgent need of the hour and fight against it must be undertaken on a war footing and on a number of fronts. Public opinion must be created against it and the different media of mass communication—the newspapers, periodicals, the radio, the television, the cinema, the public platform and the class room—must be pressed into service to combat the evil. People, especially the youth, must be made aware of the evil consequences of this habit. They must be made to realise that the friends who initiate them into this evil practice are not their friends but their enemies. They exploit them for their own nefarious ends.

Also, there must be a concentrated drive against smugglers who smuggle these drugs into the country and make huge profits by selling them to their unlucky, helpless victims. Thirdly, de-addiction centres must be established, at least in all major cities where the victims of this vicious practice may be treated and gradually weaned away from it. The drug addicts need sympathy and an understanding of their problems. They should be essentially treated as sick people and not condemned as wicked criminals. Change in social attitude is also essential for successfully tackling the problem.

There is no doubt that the government is fully alive to the urgency of this problem. Mass media has already started highlighting the evil consequences of this problem and influencing public opinion against it. Programmes aimed at eradication of this evil are televised frequently. The drive against smugglers and vendors of these drugs has been intensified and huge quantities are being seized practically everyday. De-addiction centres for the treatment of these helpless people have already been established in cities like Delhi and Mumbai and it is hoped that more and more areas would soon have such centres. The fight against this social evil has started but its eradication is a matter of time only.

Drug abuse is a serious public health problem that affects almost every community and family in some way. Each year drug abuse causes millions of serious illnesses or injuries. Abused drugs include the use of :

The term addiction is defined as a chronic, relapsing disorder characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use despite adverse consequences. It is considered a human brain disorder, because it involves functional changes to brain circuits involved in reward, stress, and self-control, and those changes may last a long time after a person has stopped taking drugs.

Drugs and Alcohols are addictive substances. Once a person falls prey to their abuse, it is not easy to get rid or refrain oneself. Their addiction and dependence could produce severe outcomes. Adolescents are more prone to getting into these habits.

Alcohol and drug abuse is a very common problem that our society is facing today. This addiction results in serious and harmful effects, if it is left untreated. There are different types of treatment for drug abuse.

Let us explore into how alcohol and drug abuse can be prevented and controlled.

Young and adolescent minds could be moulded in any direction depending on the kind of exposure they get. They might befriend abusers and get into the habit of drinking, smoking or taking drugs. At this point in time, it is the responsibility of the parents as well as the teachers to handle the issue sensitively and guide them in the right direction.

Here are certain measures which need to be taken to prevent and control alcohol and drug abuse.

• Persistent counselling is required to teach the child to deal with failures, pressures, stress, and disappointments. In fact, guiding them towards productive activities such as music, painting, yoga, sports or one of their hobbies could also help.
• Children often pick up habits from their close ones. Thus, the attitude of parents and older siblings towards alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs also affect the child’s choices.
• In case the child is stressed out and on the verge of abuse, help must be sought from parents or even trusted friends who may guide them in the right direction, thereby helping him vent out their anxiety and guilt.
• Parents must stay connected with the child, keeping a track of his whereabouts at all times. Spending more time with the family will help be open and honest with their parents.
• If it is found that children have fallen prey to alcohol and drug abuse, their friends must immediately bring this to the notice of their parents or teachers, so that the latter could take remedial measures for the same. Counselling can be given to students at school to ensure that others students are willing to speak out and help their friends in trouble.
• However, despite all the prevention measures, if unfortunately, the child does get into the abuse, seek professional aid. There are a number of rehabilitation centres, de-addiction programs and qualified psychiatrists who would help to get rid of the problem.

Milwaukee County unveils new projects to stem tide of opioid overdose deaths

As drug overdose deaths continue to scourge the community, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley has announced a series of new projects aimed at stemming the tide of death and destruction caused by opioid addiction. 

“My administration is proposing upstream investments to help address racial and health disparities and ensure residents can access the resources and support they need – because lives depend on it,” Crowley said.

The projects, seven in total, are funded by $8.5 million from the  $102 million in opioid settlement funds  and will focus on opioid use disorder abatement, prevention and recovery programs for the next three years, Crowley said.

The settlement came after Wisconsin and other states filed a federal lawsuit against opioid manufacturers accused of fueling the epidemic. 

The funds will be administered by Milwaukee County’s Department of Health and Human Services, the Office of Emergency Management and the Department of Administrative Services.

Although the projects announced by Crowley are focused on combating the opioid epidemic, local efforts to reduce drug overdose deaths appear to be working. 

Through July 16, there were 204 confirmed drug overdose deaths in Milwaukee County, with 89 additional cases pending toxicology reports, according to data provided by Karen Domagalski, operations manager for the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office. Through the same time period in 2023, there were 354 drug overdose deaths in Milwaukee County. 

Although the pace of drug overdose deaths has slowed in the county, disparities in deaths continue to be particularly acute among African Americans, data shows. 

Forty-three percent of drug overdose victims in Milwaukee County this year have been African American. African Americans have the  highest rate of drug overdose deaths  based on their population in the county (27%). Forty-six percent of victims this year were white; 20% were Hispanic; and two victims were  Native American . Sixty-three percent of victims were men and 37% were women.

Projects proposed by crowley.

One of the projects proposed by Crowley is the creation of a new public health campaign that targets the issue of opioid overdoses and the use of adulterants in Black and Brown communities.

Adulterants are substances often added to other drugs such as opioids and a contributing factor in many overdose deaths.  

Another project proposed by Crowley is to create a pilot “overdose prediction model.” 

The model would help individuals at risk for an overdose, help assess community needs and support integration of other data collected by the county. 

Another plan is to integrate treatment access during and after incarceration. High-risk individuals would be identified and referred by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office, the Community Reintegration Center and the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office. 

Ken Ginlack, executive director and CEO of  Serenity Inns , a drug treatment facility for men located at 2825 W. Brown St., said the proposed projects show a strong commitment to marginalized communities. 

“By ensuring that treatment and resources are available to all individuals, regardless of their background or financial situation, Milwaukee County is taking a crucial step towards equity in health care,” Ginlack said. “These efforts will save lives and provide individuals with the tools they need to achieve long-term recovery and stability.” 

The other projects include grief outreach and grief-informed care, expanded paramedic coverage, adding 20 harm-reduction beds to a county-run center that serves the homeless and an overall enhancement and alignment of treatment services. 

Additional reaction to projects

Michelle Jaskulski, who serves on the advisory board for the  Addiction Policy Forum  and is an executive assistant for  4th Dimension Sobriety,  a sober living facility, said she sees value in each of the projects. 

However, she said, she would have liked to see an expansion of outreach services for families of individuals who are actively using drugs. 

“This population has virtually no resources or support,” she said. 

She also wonders whether funds used for the awareness campaign and data collection would be better used to increase treatment services. 

“I recognize the necessity but it’s hard when people are in immediate need and aren’t able to access care while funds are used for these types of projects,” Jaskulski said. 

Rafael Mercado, founder of  Team HAVOC , a group that distributes Narcan and other resources in drug overdose hotspots, said he also would like to see more investment in treatment facilities. 

“We need more inner city treatment centers that provide both detox services as well as in-patient living centers with 24/7 access,” he said.

The projects were adopted July 31 by the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors.
