An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Bristol and Weston Bowel Cancer Screening Centre which covers Bristol and North Somerset, serving a population of over 900,000. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and dedicated registered nurse to join our screening team. As a Band 6 Specialist Screening Practitioner (SSP) you will employed by University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust and based at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, but you will be required to work across multiple sites, including Bristol Royal Infirmary, South Bristol Community Hospital, Southmead Hospital and possible future working at Weston General Hospital.

Additionally you must have good Information Technology (IT) skills as this post also includes daily data entry into a national screening database. Specialist training will be provided for use of the Bowel Cancer Screening IT system, Open Exeter. Some experience in teaching or health promotion is also an advantage, but not essential. You should also hold a full driving licence, have access to a car and be willing to travel between hospital sites.

Main duties of the job

As an SSP it is mandatory to start the SSP course within one year of appointment. This course is provided by Liverpool John Moore's University or Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, run in partnership with the University of Plymouth. Support and mentorship will be provided during this period of study. You must successfully complete this course in order to continue working within the screening programme.

We are looking for an experienced hardworking, flexible and committed individual to join our team, providing high quality care to all screening participants. You will be responsible for supporting the Bowel Cancer Screening Programmes across Bristol and North Somerset in conjunction with the Lead SSP. You must be able to work effectively as part of a team, and as an autonomous practitioner managing your own caseload of patients. You will be responsible for undertaking nurse led clinics including patient assessment, provision of information and preparation and support of those undergoing endoscopic or radiological investigations, within the screening programme. The role requires you to communicate and work closely with the wider Multidisciplinary team across different hospital trusts. You must have excellent communication skills and be able to communicate sensitive and complex information to both patients and colleagues, including breaking significant news.

University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) is one of the largest acute Trusts in the country, bringing together a combined workforce of over 13,000 staff and over 100 different clinical services across 10 different sites, serving a core population of more than 500,000 people across South West England. Our hospitals are spread across Bristol and Weston, join us and you can enjoy the very best of both worlds; city living within a stone's throw of the countryside or beside the seaside, both with easy access to all that the South West has to offer. UHBW is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. As an equal opportunities employer actively working towards a diverse workforce we aim to recruit and retain a workforce which represents the rich diversity of the local population at all levels and are committed to designing our services around the needs of individual patients and those around them. By researching cutting edge treatments and investing in the best science, we’re saving and improving people’s lives.

Bowel Research UK has invested over £9 million directly into research projects tackling bowel cancer and bowel disease. *

We have discovered new ways of doing things, set up audits & data registries that improve patient care, and enabled the growth of life-changing clinical trials.

A further £2.4 million of our funding helped establish the National Bowel Research Centre at Queen Mary University of London. The human tissue laboratory there is discovering genuine firsts in the hunt for better treatments and potential cures, and attracting millions in commercial research funding.

Alongside the Association of Coloproctology for Great Britain & Ireland , we helped to fund the creation of Royal College of Surgeons Surgical Specialty Leads – driving an explosion in surgical research trials both within the UK & globally.

Our initiatives to enhance patient involvement in research have been revolutionary – making sure patients themselves are the people helping to set the research agenda and designing studies. Through these, we have unlocked research funding for large scale clinical trials from major funders like the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), Cancer Research UK and the Medical Research Council.

At Bowel Research UK we work proactively with policymakers at every level to make sure our research drives real change, converting evidence into practice as quickly and effectively as possible.
