Pop Culture Happy Hour
Hunter schafer's 'cuckoo' serves up alpine horror.
August 12, 2024 In the new, stylishly odd horror film Cuckoo , Hunter Schafer plays an American teenager who reluctantly moves with her family to a mysterious resort in the German Alps. Her rebellious spirit clashes with the resort's creepy proprietor, played by Dan Stevens. When weird stuff starts happening, long-buried family secrets come to light and the resort's true nature stands revealed.

Matt Damon and Casey Affleck are 'The Instigators' in a classic heist film throwback
August 9, 2024 After a heist goes bad, two inept Boston crooks (played by Damon and Affleck) become uneasy partners. The Instigators is a reasonably enjoyable film that reflects an earlier cinematic era.

Blake Lively in It Ends With Us. Sony Pictures hide caption
'It Ends With Us' is a melodrama with serious undertones
August 9, 2024 The 2016 Colleen Hoover novel It Ends With Us was a massive bestseller. And now that book is a movie. Blake Lively stars as Lily Bloom, a woman who falls for a hot neurosurgeon played by Justin Baldoni — who also directs the film. But their relationship is complicated by the return of her old flame (Brandon Sklenar). She also has to reckon with her feelings about her abusive father and the mother who stayed with him.
Lily Collias brings a nearly wordless intensity as Sam in Good One. Smudge Films hide caption
In ‘Good One,’ a family camping trip is full of emotional switchbacks
August 8, 2024 On its surface, Good One is about a teen on a backpacking trip with her dad and his friend. But the film is so sharp and engrossing you might not notice the deeper story taking shape underneath.
(l-r) Colman Domingo and Clarence Maclin in Sing Sing . A24 hide caption
Colman Domingo's 'Sing Sing' is a rare empathetic prison drama
August 5, 2024 The moving drama Sing Sing stars Colman Domingo as the leader of a tight-knit theatre ensemble within one of the most notorious maximum-security prisons in the United States. Most of the cast are alumni of the actual program who had input on the filmmaking process. The movie showcases the ups and downs of putting on a show without being overly sentimental or cliché.

M. Night Shyamalan lays his own parent 'Trap,' and it's truly bonkers
August 2, 2024 M. Night Shyamalan's new thriller Trap stars Josh Hartnett as a father attending a pop concert with his teenage daughter. But all is not as it appears. It quickly turns out that the entire concert is surrounded by police who are trying to catch a dangerous serial killer in the most difficult way possible. There is a lot going on in this bonkers movie: lots of pop songs, and lots of strange decision-making.

'Deadpool & Wolverine' is a self-cannibalizing slog
July 26, 2024 Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have good, thorny chemistry in this odd-couple action hero flick. But brand extension disguised as a satire of brand extension is still just ... brand extension.

'Deadpool & Wolverine' is a feast of inside jokes
July 26, 2024 In the highly meta Deadpool & Wolverine , Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman finally meet up for their own big movie. Deadpool is still smarmy, Wolverine is still tragic, and they have to get together to save the world. Along the way, Deadpool continues his usual routine of endless wisecracking. The movie is jam-packed with fan service and Easter eggs. But how will casual Marvel fans like the movie?

Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones play rival storm chasers in Twisters . Universal Pictures Warner Bros. Pictures & Amblin Entertainment/Universal Pictures Warner Bros. Pictures & Amblin Entertainment hide caption
'Twisters' swirls an old-fashioned rom-com into an effects-happy action movie
July 19, 2024 This follow-up to the 1996 blockbuster Twister updates the original by making its heroine — not its hero — the center of gravity, but alas, the script doesn’t let her be a whole lot of fun.
Glen Powell in Twisters. Melinda Sue Gordon/Universal hide caption
'Twisters' has us spiraling
July 19, 2024 Twiste r was one of the biggest disaster movies of the '90s. Now, it's finally got a sequel — one with an all-new cast, state-of-the-art effects, and a whole lot of tornadoes. The new film stars Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones as rival storm-chasers who have a habit of running into tornadoes while everyone else is fleeing. Twisters was directed by Lee Isaac Chung, who also directed the Oscar-nominated Minari .

'Longlegs' is a (satanic) panic
July 15, 2024 They're calling it the scariest movie of the year. The new horror film Longlegs follows FBI special agent Lee Harker (Mika Monroe) tracking a serial killer in the 1990s. If that sounds like familiar ground, consider this – the clues she follows hint at the involvement of the occult in general and Satanism in particular. And the killer in question: Nicolas Cage, uncaged.

'Fly Me to the Moon' soft launches Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum
July 12, 2024 The cheeky new romantic dramedy Fly Me to the Moon stars Scarlett Johansson as a NASA publicist at the height of the space race. She must stage a top-secret fake version of the moon landing as backup, just in case the real attempt fails. No one else at NASA can know about it — especially the upstanding launch director, played by Channing Tatum. The pair clash (and flirt) as they prepare for Apollo 11 to launch.

'Despicable Me 4' serves up 90 minutes of bankable mayhem
July 10, 2024 Despicable Me 4 is the latest film in an animation franchise that made household names of reformed supervillain Gru (Steve Carrell) and his army of nattering Minions. The franchise has grossed billions of dollars, and the latest movie topped the weekend box office. But are these films growing up with their audience, or continuing to cater to young kids? And does that matter?
Samira (Lupita Nyong’o) and her cat Frodo try to avoid alien attack in A Quiet Place: Day One. Gareth Gatrell/Paramount Pictures hide caption
This 'Quiet Place' prequel is a little too mum on backstory

Sorry, but I’m Rooting for The First Era in The Challenge: Battle of the Eras
MTV's The Challenge is about to turn the big 40 (like me!), and it was more-than-appropriate that the iconic reality competition brought in the best from each of the series’ four eras to see which one reigned supreme. As much as I love the new-age of the Challenge, my allegiance is firmly with the first era. I grew up watching the old-school Challenge, back when it was just Road Rules (RIP) and The Real World (may you also RIP) battling out to see which show was the best (spoiler, it was almost always Road Rules). Some of The Challenge’s more iconic characters came out of these early years, some of whom represent Team First Era in this challenge. So, I have fond memories of those glorious early years, and I think this era was certainly the best. So, while I wish the other eras the best, I’ll scream this loud and proud: LET’S GO FIRST ERA!
Do big action scenes hide bad writing?
One of the chief complaints of any movie or TV show that exists in a setting that could offer action scenes but chooses not to is that the story was boring without the action scenes. But as someone who sat through all the seasons of Arrow and watched as Stephen Amell flipped and twirled and danced through endless fight choreography, the allure of fight scenes and action sequences has lost its luster. In fact, often times I feel like a lot of action is jammed into a story in order to balm over the weak writing. This isn't always the case. Obviously, there are movies out there that are packed with action and tell a compelling story as well. But as I was finishing off the newest season of House of the Dragon , the largest complaint I kept hearing was "this season was boring." Was it though? When it comes to fantasy or sci-fi or any sort of genre storytelling, there seems to be an obsession with large, expansive battle scenes a
Rest in Paradise, Paramount TV
It’s never easy saying goodbye, especially to someone (or something) that you didn’t get a chance to know. That’s how I felt when Collider’s Marisa Williams broke the sad news that Paramount TV Studios was shutting its doors, and moving its properties to CBS Studios. I couldn’t believe it. I never really got the opportunity to learn more about the studio that gifted us such gems as Reacher and Time Bandits . Sure, times may be changin’, as more-and-more people are cutting the old cord and moving to streaming, but I feel Paramount TV Studios had potential that still needed to be tapped; and, sadly, we’ll never get to see that potential bloom. So, I guess, this is it. Goodbye, Paramount TV Studios. We'll pour a cold one out for you.

These shows in the Prime Video top 10 are worth the hype
- Best of Prime Video top 10
- Full Prime Video top 10
Whenever I’m in need of a new show to binge, I often find myself scrolling through Prime Video’s top 10 list, hoping to strike gold. It’s a great starting point when you’re not sure what to watch next, but let’s be honest — sometimes those rankings can be hit or miss (even on one of the best streaming services ).
Not everything in the top 10 deserves a spot on your must-watch list, which is why I’ve sifted through the current lineup to pick out three shows that truly stand out. If you're looking for something to dive into right now (that isn’t "The Boys" or "Fallout", as incredible as they are), these are the ones on Prime Video that won’t disappoint.
This is based on the Prime Video top 10 shows as of Monday, August 12.
BEST SHOWS IN THE PRIME VIDEO TOP 10
'batman: caped crusader'.
"Batman: Caped Crusader" finally landed on Prime Video at the beginning of this month, and it earned an impressive score from critics. A colleague stated they had been "looking forward to Batman: Caped Crusader for a very long time", and its solid rating of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes proves the wait was totally worth it.
This animated series explores a darker, more noir-inspired version of Gotham City. Bruce Wayne adopts the mantle of Batman, a relentless, brave and mysterious vigilante, dedicated to eradicating crime and preventing the city's downfall. His actions attract new allies and enemies within the Gotham City Police Department and City Hall. "Caped Crusader" is designed to appeal to both long-time Batman fans and newcomers, as it offers a mix of familiar elements and new twists in the world of this beloved superhero.

The show takes time to explore Catherine's rise from a young, orphaned noblewoman of Italian descent to becoming the Queen of France. It begins with her arrival at the French court as a teenage bride, who has no choice but to marry King Henry II. She faces many challenges along the way, including a loveless marriage, a foreign court that views her with suspicion and the pressures of producing an heir. However, despite all of this, Catherine proves to be shrewd, resourceful and ruthless when necessary.

What is the best Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie?
Since 1990, there have been nine Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies of varying quality. The most recent addition to the franchise, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem , is already being considered the greatest. It’s an entertaining and visually stunning animated film that’s bound to be a good time. However, the original 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles still stands out as the best to me. It stays true to the comics and features some great action scenes, and while it's cheesy, it’s a good nostalgia trip.
Will Tron: Ares properly revive the franchise?
Disney unveiled a new look at Tron: Ares at D23, teasing the latest adventure in the sci-fi franchise, which will bring the digital world of The Grid to the real world. Arriving 15 years after its predecessor, Tron: Legacy , the question becomes whether it will offer the franchise a proper revival, and I'm a little uncertain it will. Jared Leto may have once been a bankable name, but after the failure of Morbius , I can't see audiences pouring out to see him, especially with the plot seemingly ignoring Legacy .
What's the most frustrating Helldivers 2 update?
Despite becoming one of the most viral games at the start of the year, including becoming PlayStation's fastest selling video game of all-time, Helldivers 2 has seen a lot of controversies, both with failures to login to PSN via PC and various updates nerfing a multitude of weapons. Though Escalation of Freedom has provided some exciting new twists, I do feel like the recent nerf to the flamethrower is the most frustrating yet, as the developers' desire to make for a more realistic portrayal of the weapon has taken a lot of the fun out of using it.

- Trivia The movie was shot in the summer of 2021 and Eli Roth's first director's cut was reportedly finished in early 2022. However, it was shelved for over two years due to extreme studio interference while the film was in post-production. Appalled by the film's extreme violence, the studio wanted the film to be marketed as a blockbuster and hired Tim Miller to do extensive reshoots on the project. These reshoots ended up comprising so much of the final movie that Steve Jablonsky had to write an entirely new musical score, as the original score by Nathan Barr no longer fit the film.

Trump, in rambling presser, says he won't "recalibrate" amid massive momentum swing
"i haven't recalibrated strategy at all,” trump said, attacking a reporter asking about his light campaign load, by griffin eckstein.
Donald Trump delivered an hour-long rambling press conference on Thursday, telling reporters that he has no plans to recalibrate his strategy in the wake of polling upheavals and demanding debates against Harris, despite past attempts to back out of an already-set ABC News face-off.
Answering questions at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, the former president made his first public appearance since Vice President Kamala Harris selected Tim Walz as her running mate on the second anniversary of a federal raid to re-capture classified documents that Trump retained after his term.
“Our country right now is in the most dangerous position it’s been in,” Trump opened in his doom-and-gloom remarks. “You could end up in a depression of the 1929 variety,” he said, adding that the country was “very close to that.”
Trump, seemingly failing to find his words, charged Walz as a “radical left– uhh– man,” later saying the Minnesota governor was “heavy into the transgender world.”
Despite a sparse rally schedule this week, Trump called the presser amid Harris’ surge in the polls. Recent counts have Harris up nationally by three points, while she took the edge in several key swing states. Asked if the momentum swing would affect his electoral strategy, Trump denied it.
"I haven't recalibrated strategy at all, it’s the same policies,” he said , before attacking a reporter who asked why he backed off the campaign trail in recent days.
Trump shared details of a potential NBC debate on September 10, as well as debates on Sept. 25 and his hopes for a Fox debate on Sept. 4, flipping the script on the ABC debate he’d previously agreed to on the 10th. Per an ABC News statement shared by reporter Brian Stelter, Trump misspoke and was recommitting to that ABC News debate. The network now expects the former president's attendance.
On policy questions, Trump argued that abortion has been “very much tempered down” as a campaign issue and likely wouldn’t be a top concern for voters, instead attacking Harris personally.
After defending January 6th rioters and calling their deadly attempt to keep President Joe Biden from being officially certified as the winner of the 2020 race a peaceful protest, Trump doubled down on his claim that “the presidency was taken away from Joe Biden.”
“We’re leading, I’m not complaining,” Trump said, before arguing that Democrats should have conducted a primary race instead of selecting Harris.
Elsewhere, he made the wild claim that nobody has ever spoken to crowds bigger than he has, not even Martin Luther King.
Many immediately pointed to Trump's rambling, unfocused comments and answers as a sign of the 78-year-old's cognitive decline, including conservative political commentator S. E. Cupp.
"Trump’s not OK," Cupp wrote in a post to X. "Without the laugh and clap track of his rallies, his incoherent rambling seems even more unhinged, panicked, and desperate."

Gyaarah Gyaarah Review: Gripping plot wasted by uneven pacing, unanswered questions
Gyaarah gyaarah review: there are too many clichés in this raghav juyal and kritik kamra's crime thriller. the crime may seem horrifying when narrated, but it has been shot with a novice approach..
Listen to Story
- Gyaarah Gyaarah is a Zee5 crime thriller with time travel elements
- It stars Kritika Kamra, Raghav Juyal, and Dhairya Karwa as police officers
- The show is inspired by Korean drama Signal
We've all got that one friend who shares screenshots of their phone's clock showing '11:11', believed by many to be an angel number capable of creating miracles and fulfilling wishes. This is probably the reason why the makers picked the title Gyaarah Gyaarah (11:11 in Hindi), as the story revolves around this miraculous minute when a character in the present manages to communicate with someone in the past. Given both are police officers, they even go on to help each other solve difficult cases.
The Zee5 series stars Kritika Kamra, Raghav Juyal, and Dhairya Karwa, each playing officers in khaki uniforms. Directed by Umesh Bisht, the series has been inspired by the Korean drama Signal (2016). It is one of the highest-rated Korean dramas in cable television history and was based on the 2000 film Frequency.
On paper, Gyaarah Gyaarah is a crime thriller , but it also dabbles with time travel, destiny, and even a tinge of romance—everything that the Indian audience loves. With eight episodes, each around 45 minutes, the series can feel a bit exhausting, particularly in the first four episodes.
Unfortunately, the cases are quite lukewarm and predictable, and the pace is faulty as well. Even with so much going on and the past-present switch with a linear timeline, the drama is quite thanda . It's probably the performances, especially by Kritika Kamra and Raghav Juyal, that hold your attention.
Raghav finds his redemption arc playing an upright police officer after playing a vicious criminal in Kill. Kritika gives a top-notch performance as the boss lady, who is also healing a grieving heart. Dhairya Karwa has the perfect physicality to play a police officer, but he struggles during emotional scenes. Also, because he plays a character in the past, the connection is never fully formed.
Coming to the cases, the show opens with a law being introduced where all cases that have been pending for 20 years would be squashed to relieve the law maintainers. This is when we meet new police recruit Yug Arya (Juyal), who seems to be a genius and an expert at psychoanalysis of criminals. He stands by a grieving mother who has been seeking justice for many years for her child. Yug witnessed the girl getting kidnapped by a woman, unlike police investigations that zeroed in on a man. As the girl's murder case is set to be quashed in a few hours, Yug and his senior Vamika Rawat (Kamra) give it a last try to solve it. The newbie soon lands upon a walkie-talkie and gets a call at 11:11 pm from Shaurya Antwal (Karwa), another policeman, and together they manage to crack the case of the murderer.
The phenomenon continues for the next few cases too, where they manage to not just find killers but also prove the innocence of a man who was falsely accused and jailed. While the makers did hint at Shaurya's father being a physicist and his connection with watches and times, they never fully explain what caused this miracle. Why and how were Yug and Shaurya connected? Why and how did they manage to communicate? Too many questions, but sadly, no answers.
Also, there are too many clichés in terms of how a police officer or even a suspect behaves. The crime may seem horrifying when narrated, but it has been shot with a novice approach. It's sad that filmmakers still underestimate the audience's intelligence and taste. Even when adapting a sleek thriller like Signal, they choose to go with a run-of-the-mill drama in the narrative. Overall, while Gyaarah Gyaarah offers a refreshing break from the usual rom-coms, its lack of pace and depth may leave crime thriller fans craving more.
