We always compare how it feels like living in a provincial area to an urban city. People think that provinces are only filled with trees. No crowded places. And, that animals are commonly everywhere and not living in cages. People think that living in a province remains better than in a developing place in the country. Sure, province life is much more serene and stress-free living compared to the big city. However, advantages exist when you live in the city.

Advantages of living in a province

First, less air pollution. Everyone knows that due to the greater number of greenery than the human population. The air we breathe there remains fresher and healthier.

Second, it has more soil – perfect for plants than cemented ones. Planting crops to have vegetables for meals can make one spend less money.

Third, the summer season feels a little less hot as trees help absorb the heat from the sun. Aside from that, it also helps prevent one to get sunburn or rashes.

Fourth, no heavy traffics, no loud car engines, and less smoke from cars.

Fifth, gadget use will remain lesser than usual. You can enjoy the sights more than the pictures on social media.

Sixth, no need for pools or popular beaches. Even a small stream pr river will give you a good swim. Also, taking it as you took the whole place into a reservation.

Seventh, owning a form becomes an advantage. The most exciting part will be the harvest season. It feels so relaxing and thrilling when checking if the fruit or the vegetable can be picked or not.

Eighth, buko (coconut), banana, jack fruit, cacao, sugar cane, mango, guava can be eaten for free. It only grew everywhere in the province. Plus, it also allows neighbors to treat each other as relatives and exchanging food and fruits to share.

Nevertheless, some choose to live in the city. We can’t really blame them. There’s something that the city can offer that some small provinces just cannot.

Advantages of living in the city

First, cities can be a country’s proof that they have started developing. It has buildings with technologies that make one’s life easier.

Second, it has more job opportunities. Compared to the provincial wage rate, a city offers a larger amount salary.

Third, the city also has countless options for museums to visit. Plus, it has restaurants with delicious flavors that will savor one’s tongue.

Fourth, we can visit amusement parks with rides and activities that you can enjoy with your friends and family.

Fifth, government offices also remain close. Especially, when you want to process important documents that are mostly one ride or a few hours away.

Sixth, based on my own experience, living eighteen years in my provincial hometown, I have a lot of wonderful memories there that I will forever cherish.

Seventh, I am starting to collect great experiences here in the city. I find it really different but, at the same time, it still feels awesome.

Provinces may sound boring to others. But to some, it is a perfect place to organize your mind, forget your problems in a while, and realize things. Meanwhile, living in the city, you might say it is too messy, too crowded, and too loud. But, you don’t realize the fun and excitement it brings you when an event takes place.

Well, go ahead and live within those two places as long as you enjoy your life in that place where comfort remains available and you feel safe living in it. Your happiness remains the most important thing – whether it be in a city or a province.

For every homeowners, it can be difficult to decide on the perfect piece of property. The location you choose should accommodate your lifestyle both short-term and in the long run.

LIVING IN PROVINCE

The cost of buying a home is usually lower in Rural areas than in urban settings.
Wake up in the morning with fresh air.
You’ll get to enjoy the breath-taking natural sceneries.
The life in Province is relaxing and peaceful and away from hustle sounds from cars and buses or noise from people.
Free from city traffic.
Living areas are spacious and houses are comfortably spaced. People can find privacy.
The price of commodities, particularly fresh produce, is lower compared to the city.
Commuting is easier, navigating is easier, and typically, neighbors are friendlier.

LIVING IN CITIES

Living in the urban areas have a modern lifestyle.
Better infrastructure and transport facilities.
The access to health care facilities, schools, malls, are quick and easy.
There is easy availability of grocery, medical shops, and other essentials.
More opportunities to find a job with good salary.

DISADVANTAGES

Job opportunities are less and the career choices are not many.
Less activities like major concerts and fun events and amenities like airports, hospitals, schools, etc.
Limited shopping and dining options.
Less transport facilities.
The cost of buying a home is usually higher in cities.
The population is high, and they are generally thickly populated.
Cities are crowded, houses are closely spaced, thus leaving less scope for privacy.
Agricultural land is lost in the construction of roads and buildings.
Noisy streets and full of traffics.
People living in the city have a hectic lifestyle.
Flooded by criminal cases and pollution.

In conclusion, some people prefer living in the city because of modern things. On the other hand, some people prefer living in the province because they want a relaxing, pollution-free environment to live in.

Every person can choose where he want to live, because province and cities have their own advantages and disadvantages.

More and more people are living in big cities these days. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this for society and individuals?

1. Disadvantage

It is reported that there is a rising number of people residing in metropolitan areas . Even if work prospects are more abundant in these areas, the quality of city life would still be unpleasant due to living expenses and noise levels being substantially higher.

On the one hand, major cities provide both a significant amount of employment and higher average salaries. With corporations dominating the city skyscrapers , it is impossible to not find work. Statistics from New York City demonstrate that inhabitants here have ten times more job prospects than those in the neighboring suburbs and smaller towns. Additionally, greater earnings are also another reason why workers are attracted to large cities. High-skilled workers tend to concentrate in urban centers because they can accumulate valuable experiences that are not available elsewhere. This skilled workforce is, of course, the target of agglomeration economies which are often willing to pay higher wages.

The increased cost of living, on the other hand, is the first disadvantage that people typically evaluate when considering relocating to a city. Major cities always have vastly higher living expenses than their surrounding suburbs. Places such as San Francisco and Los Angeles consistently have the highest accommodation costs in the United States. In these cities, basic living expenditures such as rent, utilities, food, beverages, and gasoline tend to be much greater. Secondly, metropolitan regions also have higher noise exposure . Major cities have far more inhabitants and traffic, which adds to the noise, as do trains and neighboring airports with shrieking planes arriving and departing. Special events, such as musical concerts and tournaments, can also render a neighborhood more disruptive and congested .

In conclusion, although living in bigger cities provides greater job opportunities, the living experience would still be undesirable due to the exorbitant living costs .

On the one hand, major cities provide a plethora of enjoyable activities and ways to meet new people. There is always plenty to do in a large city to keep people of all interests entertained. Metropolises like Las Vegas, Bangkok, or Tokyo, for instance, feature vibrant nightlife , a variety of food to taste, festivities , and sporting events. Furthermore, these large metropolises also often come with millions of residents from varied origins and backgrounds. As such, meeting new individuals who share similar interests and passions can be incredibly exciting.

From another perspective, however, metropolitan regions suffer from higher levels of noise exposure and air pollution. Firstly, major cities have a significant number of inhabitants, which increases noise. General transportation modes like trains, buses, and airplanes also contribute to noise. Downtown districts in New York City, for example, are loud and crowded virtually twenty-four hours a day. Secondly, most urban dwellers worldwide are inhaling unhealthy levels of pollution. Ambient fine particle air pollution and nitrogen dioxide are the two primary pollutants that are especially notable in urban environments. As both of these are linked to the aggravation of asthma symptoms and other lung-related problems, city life is extremely harmful.

In conclusion, living in a city may provide for a broader variety of activities, but there are also substantial negatives owing to the increased rates of air and noise pollution.

The possibilities can go from part-time and full-time positions in offices to retail and service industry jobs. Hence, urban areas have long been regarded as diverse job hubs.

The lack of living and green space, on the other hand, is a huge deterrent to individuals coming to cities. Most residents in larger cities often reside in apartments, which can be rather modest, if not tiny. It is also atypical to have an outside space such as a yard or terrace. Even though there are residences with open-air gardens in urban areas, they are considered highly luxurious. Living in the city, therefore, entails accepting the fact that one will be living in an apartment complex with neighbors on the opposite side of the walls. People in New York City, for example, may wander for miles before stumbling across any green area. In actuality, Central Park is commonly regarded as the communal "garden" for thousands of households.

In conclusion, despite the fact that people have more career options and transportation alternatives, the shortage of space and vegetation in cities continues to provide severe drawbacks.

Within a relatively small radius, shop-goers would discover everything from traditional, larger-brand retailers with trendy, fashionable outfits to modest, artisan craft businesses , specializing in handcrafted, customized apparel.

Increased living expenses and crime rates, on the other hand, are significant deterrents to people migrating to large cities. Economic vitality has been more concentrated in a few favorable locales. As a result, these areas attract a disproportionate part of the country's wealth as well as the world's wealthiest inhabitants. As this group of people competes with each other in property purchases, they unintentionally drive the living costs up even more, which will soon no longer be affordable to less privileged people. Large cities are also more crime-prone , rendering them dangerous places to inhabit. This is logical from a statistical standpoint, as the urban population is extremely dense and the aforesaid riches attract criminals. Urban areas are also where there are higher numbers and more obvious cases of social and economic inequalities, which frequently trigger criminal behaviors.

In conclusion, despite the abundance of free activities and shopping alternatives major cities provide, the growing expense of living and high crime rates make them undesirable places to live.

In addition, city life is also commonly associated with a decrease in physical exercise. On top of limited green spaces, the urban lifestyle leaves people with little or no time to exercise. Only those who are serious about maintaining their health through exercise would search for gyms.

On the other hand, big cities are attractive places to settle due to better job and educational opportunities. There are more employment and learning possibilities in cities. Although the job market is considerably more competitive, there are numerous employment possibilities and a wide array of jobs in which to participate. There are even more occupations available for educated and high-skilled workers, ranging from labor positions, clerks, and customer service to jobs such as engineers, physicians, and scientists. Furthermore, cities provide greater educational prospects as well as a plethora of courses and institutions. Families with children may also find it more advantageous to relocate to the city, where they will be exposed to a more advanced and modern education system.

In conclusion, despite the fact that larger cities are vulnerable to a shortage of space, which promotes unhealthy lifestyles, greater employment and educational opportunities make these locations desirable to live in.

In addition, pollution is also unavoidable when discussing metropolitan life. Some of the causes of city air, water, and noise pollution include high carbon emission rates, contaminated drinking water, and excessive decibel levels. In cities such as Los Angeles, other sources of pollution also include the growing use of motorized transportation and the massive quantity of waste generated.

On the other hand, cities are desirable locations to reside in because of their thriving communities and diversity of cultures. The reason is that people from varied ethnic backgrounds commonly flock to certain mega-cities. In these places, individuals would have more opportunities to explore other cultures. As one becomes more accustomed to the city lifestyle, the chances of forming friendships and developing meaningful connections increase. Cities are the perfect places for people to develop their group of connections and networks, thus gaining better life experiences. Furthermore, leading a busy life in a fast-paced metropolis may be the key to finding true happiness as people feel they are steadily working towards their dreams. According to research, there is a positive correlation between people's levels of life satisfaction and the pace at which they spend their lives.

In conclusion, while cities often have traffic and pollution issues, their cultural diversity and lively communities make them ideal locations to live.

On the other hand, people still flock to major cities because of their superior general facilities and healthcare. Cities frequently have hospitals and nursing homes with skilled doctors and good medication to care for us when we have illnesses. Moreover, numerous gyms and parks would also further encourage people to stroll and exercise. With growing environmental concerns, most urban areas now also have pollution control departments to better manage waste and strong sewage systems to keep sanitary . High-tech cities , such as Berlin and Tokyo, have also invested in solar energy, and solar panels are currently being installed on several skyscrapers.

In conclusion, despite certain environmental risks, people still relocate to metropolises due to their favorable systems for facilities and medical services.

What Are the Benefits of Living in a Diverse City?

We hear the term diversity a lot these days, and it seems to be everywhere from politics to the workplace. Aside from being an attractive business buzzword, what does diversity mean and how does it impact our daily lives? This article will explore the benefits of living in a diverse community as well as look at some of the most diverse states in the United States.

What is Diversity?

To put it simply, diversity is the difference in backgrounds and cultures between people. It is what makes each of us unique. There are many ways in which we can be diverse—by race, ethnicity, religion, age, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic status, and more. Although it may not seem so in popular media, the United States is very culturally diverse and is home to many people from different countries, backgrounds, and lifestyles. A diverse city not only has a wide variety of people but also strives to be inclusive and welcoming of different cultures.

What are the Benefits of Diversity?

Cultural enrichment – Learning about other cultures helps us to understand other viewpoints and ideas and in doing so enriches our lives. For instance, Albuquerque in New Mexico is home to numerous Native American tribes and Mexican settlers, providing a first-hand opportunity to learn about these cultures. The diversity of the city has created a vibrant community and a booming Albuquerque real estate market as people from all over the country flock to the multicultural city.

Greater creativity – Having a variety of cultures and backgrounds allow for different perspectives and new ideas. This diversity of thoughts and opinions promotes creativity and innovation. Hence, cities with a diverse population tend to be more innovative than homogeneous ones. Hubs of creativity in the US such as San Francisco and New York are typically some of the most diverse. From the arts to technology, diversity is driving change and inspiration across industries.

Better lifestyle – With people from different backgrounds come a myriad of different traditions, cuisine, and art. Some of the most diverse cities in the US, including Los Angeles and New Orleans, are known for their range of world-class restaurants featuring food from cultures all around the world. There are also countless art galleries, museums, and festivals to explore and get involved in. This greatly enhances your range of experiences and subsequent quality of life.

Stronger community ties – Communities that are diverse and inclusive are more likely to form bonds and create a sense of belonging for all residents. With a greater sense of appreciation for other cultures, there is less conflict between different groups and communities and stronger neighborhoods with less violent crime . Of course, this comes with the caveat that efforts are made within the community to foster inclusivity, tolerance, and mutual appreciation.

Greater civic engagement – Civic engagement refers to the willingness of citizens to get involved in their communities to strengthen them and make them a better place for everyone to live and work. As people learn more about the importance of diversity and the acceptance of other cultures, they can become more engaged in their communities and work towards making positive changes that will benefit everyone. This can include volunteering or voting for progressive and inclusive legislation.

Economic growth – Diverse communities drive economic growth through increased business opportunities and increased consumer spending power. Many businesses have begun to realize that attracting a diverse workforce leads to higher productivity levels and increased revenue. It also creates a dynamic culture in which employees learn from each other and build on their strengths to create better products. This drives greater success for the economy on the whole.

Which are the Most Diverse States in the US?

According to the US Census Bureau’s 2020 census data , Hawaii is the most diverse state in the country in terms of racial and ethnic makeup. It is the only state in the US where Asians are the predominant racial group and 20% of its residents are a mix of two or more races. Second in rank is California, with 39% of its population made up of Hispanic or Latino people.

Nevada comes in third. Although it has a majority white population, it boasts a sizable population of Hispanic or Latino people and Black or African Americans. In the top ten is also New York, which has always been known as a melting pot of different cultures. The city’s immigrant population from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and Europe numbers more than three million and makes up 38% of its residents.

Some states in the south such as Florida, Texas, and New Mexico have a greater population of non-white residents. In New Mexico, 8.9% of its residents are of American Indian and Alaska Native descent. The state is home to 23 Native American tribes that maintain sovereignty over their lands and traditions while working with the federal government to establish strong and healthy community relations.

If you are looking for a broader range of opinions and life experiences, then it makes sense to live in a more diverse city or state. Whether you are looking to connect with like-minded people or meet people from interesting backgrounds, you will enjoy a richer and more fulfilling life in a diverse community. You may gain access to better career opportunities and lifestyle choices too!

Investing in a home is definitely one of the major decisions that we all need to figure out. We need to take into consideration career and educational opportunities, mode of transportation, community, and most importantly, location. Can you rest well in the city or is it difficult to resist the call of a calmer, provincial life?

Nowadays, we all have read and heard that a lot of city people are moving to the province or cities outside Metro Manila for different reasons. Many want a lifestyle change — they want to be free from all the busyness and noise while enjoying the benefits of living in the suburbs to achieve a semblance of work-life balance.

What other parents are reading

Work opportunities can offer better pay

It’s rare to find manufacturing or semiconductor companies in the heart of the city because they require hectares of land for their machineries, warehouses and total facilities. These companies usually employ 3,000 to 10,000 employees for several positions in IT, engineering, human resources, quality assurance and finance. Most of these organizations pay competitively because most are multinationals, and some even offer work from home engagements. Many industrial parks are situated in Laguna, Batangas, and Cavite.

Quality education is affordable

There are a lot of good schools in the province, and big schools in Metro Manila have provincial branches and affiliate partners. The tuition fee in Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan, a high school in Cagayan de Oro, is approximately Php60,000 per year, while Ateneo de Manila High School costs an approximate fee of Php130,000 per year.

Access to nature

In this digital era, parents nowadays easily entertain themselves and their kids with the use of computers, smartphones, and TV. While it’s tempting to do that all the time, there have been several studies and researches that prove that screen time must be lessened. There are numerous physical and mental benefits when you allow your kids to spend more time outdoors. Not only that it promotes physical agility, it would help improve your kids' resilience, optimism, intelligence, and alertness, too.

More time for doing things you like

The suburbs are not exempted from bad traffic but it’s significantly better compared to the situation in the city. Metro Manila has the third worst traffic in Southeast Asia. On the average, people spend four to six hours a day traveling from work to home.

Life in the province is easier and more simple but why many are still poor?

I grew up in the province of Laguna in a small town named Santa Maria. Admittedly, I can tell that life in the province is much easier and more simple than here in the city. But in terms of personal finance, many are still NOT financially educated that keeps them poor. Here’s why.

Growing up in the province and then living and working in the city gave me the thoughts to compare life and situations in both places. When you lose your job you have all the free time to process all the ideas coming into your head. Hehe. 😀

I came to think that life in the province is more simple and easier but on the other side I wonder why there are still many poor people there?

Many are still getting scammed? Marami pa rin ang “ isang kahig isang tuka ” and most people are still not aware of what is emergency fund , what is insurance and how they could grow their money thru investing .

As far as I can see, you can live in the province without spending P200 a day. If you’re industrious, you can save more by planting fruits and vegetables in your backyard. If you have a good neighbor, you can get free fruits and vegetables from them. You can ask for “ free rice ” if you wish. But still, many remains poor.

For example, in our place, though it is easy to get food and eat 3x a day(in fact you can have “ free lunch ” from your neighborhood) many families still having issues with their budget. Many are having hard time to save.

Some people do investments but most don’t have idea how they can grow their money. Many are living just to earn and then spend all of them.

Though opportunities and jobs are limited and mostly related to agriculture, people still earn money. That means they have income. But what they do on that income makes the difference.

For example, a hard-working guy earned P1,500 in 3 days of helping in the farm. In the following day, he went to the “ cockpit arena ” and lose all of them. Boom!

Working in the farm for 3 days is no joke. It’s hard and literally tiring. But still many are “ working to spend ” them all.

It happened that some people borrow large amount of money too just to spend in gambling. Tong-its, majong, sabong and many more you name it. They knew how it works.

Another good example is a family who is having hard time to budget and save because the income is just enough for food and bills. But when the “ fiesta ” came, they have the courage to borrow P5,000 to spend on all of them in the occasion. It happens in birthdays, baptism and many more.

Most guys can spend P100 to P200 on buying cigarettes and alcoholic drinks with their friends but having hard time to save for emergency.

I can go on and on and give more examples and I know you can too (if you came from the province). But down the line, we see what’s the problem right? It’s how they manage and think about money. It’s their mindset.

Poor money mindset will keep you poor. In fact many people in the province has money-limiting beliefs that keeps them poor. Don’t get offend, I am a “ probinsyano ” too. I’m talking about the general but not everyone.

I know there are people living in the province not into this but in most cases this is what happening. In fact even in the city this happens too. This is the situation in general or at least in our place. They lacked out of financial education.

It maybe part of the culture and society because we know that personal finance is not being taught in school. Or maybe it is just how the life in the province works?

They maybe out or lack of resources too. If they can read blog like this and watch youtube videos about personal finance, that would be a great help. But we know that internet access is still limited in provinces.

The other reason I see is the lack of support from the government. If the government can push educating people about budgeting, investing and proper personal finance, that can lead to change especially in the province.

There might be another personal reasons for others but I’m sure you can relate with this in general. Right?

I hope this blog and other filipino personal finance blogs can reach them to aid some help and inspiration. To encourage them and educate them in our own little way.

I hope and pray time will come everyone will have access to resources in terms of financial education. Hopefully in the coming future, more Filipino will be financially intelligent to make smart decisions about their money. I came from a province too. One thing also that needs to be consider is the language used in spreading information. Mostly, if not all, the English language is being used that many (and we are taking about province here) cannot understand or just in one glimpse, seeing the text is in English, losses interest on the matter.

Hi Billy, I am from Agno, Pangasinan. It’s a small town at the end Western Pangasinan. Think about Hundred Islands, we are in that part of the province. I truly agree with you. Many are still poor in our town, especially those who are in barrios. Most of them do not know how to manage their finances. As for me, I already talked to my cousins to mind their spending habit. I also shared to them some things about investing. They seemed interested and I hope it goes well.

5 Reasons Why You Should Consider Moving to the Province

The urban jungle can be an uncaring and difficult place to live in. The daily commute to and from the office can be such a pain that you’re left drained of energy by the time you get home in the evening (or morning, if you’re in the graveyard shift). But for most yuppies, this is where we live and work.

Interestingly, Ms. Cheng Veniles of JobsDB Philippines said that more and more job seekers are choosing work based on location. Besides, some cities in the provinces are emerging places to work for.

So if you’re tired of the traffic, floods, pollution, and the overpopulation, you have one viable alternative.

That is to move to the province. In this article, I’ll share with you 5 reasons why you should consider moving to the province.

1. Living in the province is healthier.

Most provinces have more trees and less pollution. You can see more greenery, and at night, noise pollution is almost nil, except maybe for that annoying neighbor whose hobby is to sing sintunado karaoke songs.

Fruits and vegetables are fresh. If you want to, you can even have your own backyard garden. Besides, the “slower” lifestyle is also good for the heart. You just suffer less stress.

2. Significantly less expensive.

In a previous post, I presented the estimated expenses of a single yuppie living in Metro Manila. Guess what, by moving to the province, you will be saving money on rent, on food expenses, on transportation and several other things.

My wife and I sat down one time and tried to calculate the amount of money we could save if we decided to relocate to the province, we were surprised that we could easily save P10,000 per month. Wow. (I’ll write another blog post on this at a later time.)

3. Less traffic, less hassle.

Of course, by moving to the province, you’ll experience less traffic, less hassle. Besides, the traffic situation in Metro Manila is expected to get even worse in the next few years! But there’s a caveat. In a lot of emerging cities in the provinces, traffic is an increasing problem, too. Try going to Bocaue, Bulacan. Or Tarlac City, Rosales, Pangasinan or San Fernando, La Union. You’ll see that the urban creep, including traffic is catching up in these emerging cities.

But still, the traffic isn’t as bad as it is in Metro Manila. Since life moves at a slower pace in the province, you could probably live with that.

4. Capitalize on the growth of industries in emerging cities & provinces.

Speaking of emerging cities. North of Metro Manila, we hear of Malolos, San Fernando (in Pampanga and La Union), Vigan, Laoag, Tarlac City and Cabanatuan City among others. South of Manila, we’d hear of Lipa, Tagaytay, Batangas City, San Pablo, and Sta. Rosa among many others.

These cities are already absorbing some of the industries from Metro Manila. In Cavite, particularly, there’s a special economic zone. By moving to these emerging cities, you may be able to look for companies that require your skill set. Or you can even sell your services to them. If you’re bitten by the entrepreneurship bug, you may even start a business that cater to the needs of people in these emerging cities.

5. Have more time for family & friends.

Since life moves more “slowly” in the province, you can have more time for family and friends. One complaint of people in Metro Manila is that life moves fast and slow at the same time. There are people who firmly believe that living in the country side is the best thing that ever happened to them. Such people have no urge to visit the city or spend some time in it because they are accustomed to their country way of life. However, the reality remains that living in the city is by far the best option due to the numerous advantages that the city dweller gets to enjoy than the folks living in the country side. This essay will compare and contrast living in the country and living in the city.

One crucial point that makes living in the city to be a better choice than living in the country is the standards of living. City dwellers tend to have a higher living standards because they are likely to be the first consumers of new or latest things in the market. They have the latest gadgets, appliances, clothing, and even ideas on how to do things that will improve the quality of their living experience. This cannot be said of the people living in the country because they are like a second market after the first market of city residents has been served. The country people get their hands on most items after they have already been in use in the city.

Living in the city is better than living in the country because of the various opportunities that are available. City residents are likely to secure employment at a faster rate than the country people due to the fast dissemination of information that instantly gets to them unlike the country residents who are long distance. The city dwellers are also likely to generate income or profit at a faster rate as there is a readily available market where they can sell their valuable ideas or items to make a living. The only sure way of generating income in the country is through farming which is tedious to say the least.

City residents enjoy a better quality of life due to the availability of proximate social amenities, facilities, and services. They are near most of the government offices not to mention essential infrastructure like good hospitals, schools, or even workplaces. Those living in the city get to enjoy a variety of facilities like entertainment spots, shopping centers, or recreational facilities. Most of these things are conspicuously absent in the country side and in case they exist, they are usually located at far flung areas that create hectic transport logistics. Someone living in the city can literally walk out of their house into a barbershop which is unlike in the country where they would be required to drive or be driven all the way to town for a simple haircut.

As can be seen from the above discourse, there is no denying that there are benefits that one can derive as a country resident. However, the truth of the matter remains that city dwellers have a better way of living than the people in the country side. The availability of economic opportunities, accessibility of social services, and better living standards are the stand out reasons that make living in the city outweigh living in the country.

People offer different opinions while choosing to live in the countryside or city. Some people prefer to li9ve in the countryside while others prefer to live in the city. The choice of whether to live in the town or countryside depends on the background of an individual. Both livings come up with different drawbacks and advantages as well. Life in the city is characterized by a dense population, water pollution, air pollution, stressful experience, and air pollution. However, cities offer more advantages, such as recreational facilities, better education, job opportunities, better transport, and modern technology for accessible communication (Okulicz-Kozaryn, Adam, and Valente 6). Most people prefer to live in the city due to the fast pace of life.

On the other hand, country living can also be described as village living. A village is a community of clustered human settlement more substantial than a hamlet but smaller than a town. It is a natural growth of the human population where individuals live generation after generation. Thus, countryside living is sturdy and robust. The environment in the village is pleasant, and the pace of life is slower than in the city. In this context, the paper discusses the differences and similarities between country living and city living.

Although life in the city and countryside have differed significantly in terms of environment, cost of living and job opportunities, they still have some similarities. Some of the similarities include daily routine, work areas, and values (Okulicz-Kozaryn, Adam, and Valente 2). The different type of social classes of people that live in the cities also exists in the countryside. Different types of people occupy both environments. Additionally, the people living in both environment settings are very diligent, and the areas have various working opportunities. People participate in specific routines that revolve around their work lives. The pressure to finish a particular task within a given time also exists in both environments (Yuetter 4). Besides, individuals living in the villages are beneficial as well as those living in the cities. People interact freely and help one another in different situations and form a small community within a large population (Haque 5).

Moreover, both country living and city living are characterized by religious people. The places of worship built in the cities also exist in the villages. Both settings are filled with people who believe in the existence of one supreme God and share the same faith. Furthermore, living in the city and the countryside is comfortable depending on the preference of the individual. In both town and countryside, residents face the problem of drug addiction. Life in both environments is cooperative and friendly, attracting different groups of people. Lastly, both the rural and the city are occupied by typical, middle, and high-level types of families.

Living in the countryside and the city is different. Life in the village offers more open space, healthy living and healthy food, and a pollution-free environment. However, the people in the countryside are dependent on the cities for some facilities like better treatment and education. City residents have access to modern amenities as compared to the individuals living in the villages. Although there are modern facilities, life is more complex and mechanic, and there are no strong bonds of interconnectivity among individuals. The pace of life is faster in cities, making it stressful and slower in the countryside. Environmental pollution in city life is identical due to industrialization, and less pollution is witnessed in the countryside (Yuetter 3). The situation also brings about variation in the availability of job opportunities both in the countryside and city life. There are recreational facilities such as parks, theaters, museums, banks, sports clubs, and telecommunication centers in city life that are not present in the countryside. However, the villages have amenities such as fresh foods, a healthy atmosphere that offers mental peace, healthy living, and freedom. The cost of food is higher in the cities since foods are imported from the villages where the value is low. Also, the cost of purchasing a building is cheaper than in the city.

Additionally, the houses in the countryside have vast open spaces while city residents have to adapt to living with their nuclear family in a small compartment. Country life offers more responsibility and social experience while most city residents are selfless and busy with their own life (Haque 4). Country residents are more respectful to family relations while in the complicated city life; weak family relations are resulting in a high rate of divorce.

In conclusion, there are differences and similarities between country living and city living. Both environments have benefits and disadvantages, depending on the preference of the individual. Life in the city tends to have a faster pace with the countryside possessing a slower pace. The countryside depends on the towns for technology and education while the city depends on the countryside for food supply. The opinion on the place of residence depends on the individual.

Sofia, Bulgaria ’s capital, has certainly seen a lot of change over its 7,000-year history. It takes a casual stroll along its yellow stone-paved downtown dotted with ancient Roman ruins and elaborate examples of Byzantine, Ottoman, and 20th-century European architecture to recognize that its roots run deep.

However, its modern soul also shines through at every corner. Sofia is now a major tech and start-up hub in Southeast Europe, drawing international attention and talent. It is also home to one of Europe’s most prominent movie production studios, Nu Boyana, where many of Hollywood’s recent blockbusters have been partially produced. Sofia’s vibrant cultural life boasts dozens of galleries and museums, including the National Gallery, where this summer, two-time Oscar-winning actress and photographer Jessica Lange opened a retrospective. So too are there many food, music, literary, and performance art festivals, including the Sofia International Movie Festival, which this year presented 170 movies from over 50 countries, and the International A to Jazz Fest, attended by over 50,000 jazz enthusiasts yearly.

“Sofia [...] is a city that beautifully blends history and modernity,” Maria Bakalova , the Bulgarian Oscar-nominated actress, tells Vogue. “It’s one of Europe’s oldest capitals, yet it continues to evolve in such dynamic and modern ways. Every time I return, I’m reminded of how vibrant and cosmopolitan it has become while still retaining its unique charm with cozy streets and aristocratic old buildings. It’s quite eclectic and beautiful.” While Bakalova grew up in Burgas, a town 230 miles east of Sofia on the Black Sea coast, she moved to Sofia to pursue her studies at the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts and lived there for years. She still likes to spend time around the National Palace of Culture Park, or catch a sunset from Kopitoto, an area in Vitosha Mountain boasting panoramic views of the Sofia valley.

This duality that Bakalova references makes the city—which sits at a cultural crossroads—so unique. It has rawness and unpretentiousness that are a rarity in a world where many cities have been transforming into their TikTok and Instagram-perfect versions. Sofia is still very much a diamond in the rough, a city with an old soul in the process of building its modern identity, blending Western values and aesthetics while not letting go of its Balkan traditions. Unlike many European capitals where the same international logos overtake the glossy storefronts of prime downtown real estate, Sofia is still unapologetically itself.

“Sofia’s dining scene has changed a lot in the past few years, and you are starting to see more and more restaurants offering modern flavors and dishes created by Bulgarian chefs,” Atanas Balkanski , who helms one of Sofia’s most talked-about new restaurants, tells me. Balkanski is a 31-year-old chef who honed his skills in Western Europe and San Francisco before returning to Bulgaria. This year, he opened Aria in a sleek glass building on a quiet street in downtown Sofia. The restaurant, which features indoor and outdoor seating in a serene courtyard, focuses on seasonal fare prepared with local ingredients. The idea, Balkanski explained, was to offer a modern, elevated version of Bulgarian cuisine while still keeping it approachable and delicious (the chicken paté with plum marmalade is so far a crowd-pleaser, he notes). The menu, which features plenty of seafood options, is complemented by a long list of wines curated by award-winning Bulgarian sommelier Zhivko Enchev, who highlights the country’s rich winemaking traditions with many unique-to-Bulgaria grape varieties.

Cosmos is another award-winning favorite that serves contemporary Bulgarian cuisine. The culinary concept revolves around the reinterpretation of classic Bulgarian recipes—recently, a velvety smooth zucchini cream soup with sheep cheese and risotto with sea bass, fennel, and lovage were part of the restaurant’s daily menu, which I enjoyed for lunch with a glass of homemade lemonade. Besides being a popular hang-out spot for English-speaking travelers and locals, it also doubles as a venue for pop-up exhibitions and events.

“Sofia is trapped between getting glossy and still being dodgy and rough, which is what I like about it. It’s a combination between Athens, Istanbul, and Berlin,” Bulgarian-born Berlin-based fashion and lifestyle expert Julian Daynov says, highlighting that the city’s creative crowd has expanded in recent years.

The city is indeed a creative hub for independent artists, jewelry designers, and fashion designers, and its streets are lined with small ateliers, galleries, and art spaces. While Vitosha Boulevard, the capital’s main commercial destination, seems to attract the most tourists, we suggest you explore lesser-known areas for a more authentic window into the city’s shopping offerings.

Shishman Street, in the heart of downtown, stretches less than 10 city blocks, but it is home to a large concentration of creative businesses. But where I’ve spent the most hours roaming is Kvartal , Sofia’s arts district, located between Maria Luiza Boulevard, Slivnitza, Knyaz Aleksandar Dondukov Boulevard, and Rakosvki Street, with dozens of art studios, independent stores of all kind, bars, and coffee shops.

Viktor Pavlov , a jewelry designer and Sofia native with degrees in drawing and metalwork works out of a small atelier on Veslets Street. His jewelry, inspired by the natural world, has a delicate ruggedness that he infuses with contemporary aesthetics for a modern look.

Further down the street is Art.E , a cozy boutique for handmade porcelain and ceramic goods, and steps away is Sito Studio , which is dedicated to printmaking with a store and educational space for workshops and classes. Key policy opens doors for world's young talent.

When Priyasha Sharma first arrived in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, in 2014 from India to study at Shenzhen University, she had no inkling that she'd still be living in the city 10 years later, and calling it home.

Shenzhen, a pioneering model of China's reform and opening-up, was designated as the nation's first special economic zone in 1980. It was transformed from a small fishing village into a leading global technology center within just a few decades.

"Shenzhen is often referred to as China's Silicon Valley, and it's home to Chinese tech majors like Huawei and Tencent," Sharma noted.

After completing work for her master's degree at Shenzhen University in 2022, Sharma chose to pursue a career at a technology-focused supply chain enterprise.

Though Sharma spoke Chinese fluently, she had to cope with some cultural differences as the company's first foreign employee. However, the open and supportive atmosphere empowered her to express her views and provided her with equal opportunities for career advancement, she said.

Today, the 28-year-old holds a top managerial position in the company, helping to foster its growth and bring about more international influence.

"Shenzhen's residents embrace newcomers, blending different perspectives into a cohesive local identity," she said.

The Shenzhen city government offers services, policies and incentives to assist foreign residents, expatriate startups and established businesses, Sharma added.

For instance, there are expatriate centers in every district of Shenzhen, offering services such as language learning, legal consultation, employment and internship platforms, and business networking events for international residents. More important, these services and events are provided for free, and surveys are conducted regularly to enhance support for expats.

"Once you come here, you are a Shenzhener" is a popular saying in Shenzhen, and it resonates deeply with Sharma. She has found that the city's openness to new ideas and its focus on entrepreneurial spirit cultivate a profound sense of belonging and inclusion.

"For many, including myself, living and working in Shenzhen often feels like being part of a large, diverse community where the local identity is shaped by a blend of cultures, backgrounds and experiences," she said.

Appeal of trading hub

As China's opening-up has widened, many cities like Shenzhen have been attracting international talent to live, work and invest, as well as to establish businesses. Among them is Yiwu, a renowned small-commodities trading hub in Zhejiang province.

According to data from the Yiwu Administration for Market Regulation, 162 new foreign-funded enterprises have been established in the city this year, marking a 34 percent year-on-year increase.

Kirill Kravtsov, a 23-year-old Russian student at Peking University, visited Yiwu recently. He discovered that many young entrepreneurs from around the world have started businesses in the city. Some of them have lived there for over 10 years, witnessing and being part of the city's economic progress and infrastructure enhancement.

"Yiwu is undoubtedly a business-friendly city, as it has been launching a lot of initiatives to attract international talent and make it easier for them to live and work there," he said.

Kravtsov met a young entrepreneur from Kyrgyzstan who moved to Yiwu and started her own accessories business, which she successfully expanded to numerous other countries.

She told Kravtsov that Yiwu provides favorable policies for foreign startups, including a point system. Foreign entrepreneurs who meet specific requirements, such as clearing the Chinese-language proficiency test's highest level, and possessing a master's degree, among other qualifications, can accumulate a high score, which makes it easier for them to obtain a long-term work visa.

"Chinese cities are striving to be more open to the world, and I believe Yiwu is an exemplary case," Kravtsov said.

New platforms

Melina Gisela Weber, a 31-year-old from Germany, has a similar perspective. She traveled to the Hainan Free Trade Port in Hainan province in July and observed that the island is creating platforms for cooperation with countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative in fields including culture and education.

A prime example is Hainan Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, which was established independently by an international university.

Weber said the university offers mechanical engineering and German language courses for students, who are taught in English and follow the German education system.

"I consider this a great example of cross-border education," she said.

Weber's connection with China began in 2015 during her one semester of study at Ocean University of China in Qingdao, Shandong province. The experience impressed her deeply and aroused her curiosity, and she has been traveling between Germany and China ever since.

In 2019, Weber started sharing videos on Chinese social media platforms, showcasing her life in both countries. She has now amassed over 2 million followers on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok.

In May, Weber launched her own business in Beijing as a content creator, focusing on making videos that promote cultural exchanges.

"The Belt and Road Initiative has increased trade flows between Germany and China, as well as people-to-people exchanges," she said.

Nothing compares to the fresh air and calming landscapes in our provinces

Living in the city can take its toll on you. The daily rush to get from one place to another to avoid traffic, the pollution, and the stress can sometimes be too much to take that I can't help but miss life in the province. Compared to the fast-paced city life, days in my hometown meant waking up to fresh air with sunlight streaming into my room.

Whether you're missing your hometown too or thinking of building a house in the province, here are five reasons why you should take a chance on rural living:

There are so many modern and digital facilities available in cities, but the villages don’t have these. Naturally, the villages are beautiful. Especially the villages near any hill or river. But it is really hard to find some natural beauty in cities. Both places have good and bad sides.

Some people ask is a city better to live or village? I think there are advantages and disadvantages to both places. If you are talking about natural beauty then the village is the best place. You will get lots of natural scenes there that you won’t get in cities. Other hand cities are good for finding a new job or work.

You will not find jobs in the villages. You have to come to the city. Cities are having a better communication system, better roads and you will get transportations often. Both places have different sides. I think the city is better.
