Eyeworks Festival of Experimental Animation.

Eyeworks Festival of Experimental Animation

The Eyeworks Festival is a screening series focusing on experimental animation. Founded in 2010 and now presenting its 11th iteration, festival programs showcase outstanding experimental animation of all sorts, and include classic films and contemporary works.

Eyeworks concentrates on works made by individual artists, drawing on the tradition of classic cartoon animation, and the lineages of avant-garde and underground cinema. The aim of Eyeworks is to present works that engage the enormous potential inherent in the art form of animation, and to show pieces that use animation as part of distinctly personal, conceptual, exploratory, and critical practices.

The Eyeworks Festival, based in Los Angeles, is organized by Alexander Stewart and Lilli Carré . Presented by Pioneer Works at 2220 Arts in Los Angeles, Block Cinema in Chicago and Roxy Cinema in New York City, the 2022 festival—organized as two programs—follows a two-year pandemic hiatus, and is made possible with support by the CalArts Faculty Development Fund.

Please note that some works contain flashing and strobe lights.

The Eyeworks Festival of Experimental Animation returns to REDCAT with a special retrospective screening of films by filmmaker and artist Al Jarnow. Since the late 1960s, Jarnow has created hundreds of animated films, including dozens of shorts for “Sesame Street” and PBS and his personal experimental films that bridge science and the quotidian, using time-lapse, drawing, and stop-motion techniques. Jarnow will present a program of his films in person, followed by an onstage conversation with Eyeworks Festival curators Alexander Stewart and Lilli Carré.  Founded in 2010, Eyeworks is a curatorial project dedicated to exhibiting distinctive, personal, and visionary experimental films that use the technique of animation.

The program includes a post-screening talk with Al Jarnow, moderated by Alexander Stewart and Lilli Carré.

For over 50 years, Al Jarnow has used animation in order to perceive ways the universe moves, through light, time, scale, and cycles. His film works are in the collection of MoMA and the Met, and he created over 100 pieces for PBS , including iconic works for “Sesame Street” and “3-2-1 Contact.” Through his company Protozone, he has created interactive software and educational exhibits for museums that include his ongoing interest in waves, shorelines, rocks, patterns, and geometry. Jarnow currently works with algorithmic software compositions and makes ephemeral “beachworks” using found materials on the beaches near his home on Long Island, New York.

Stockholm Experimental Animation Film Festival, SEAFF, is back in its fifth edition! Focusing on animated short and experimental film, we present highly recognized artists and directors from the international scene as well as new and emerging independent artists and storytellers.

We aim to showcase and promote a diverse and original program of compelling imagery and storytelling with an independent and rare spirit. - Attention will be given to artistic originality and creativity. - We welcome ideas with experimental ambitions. - Our selection is based solely on aesthetic values.

The first three editions of SEAFF have been held at Zita and Rio, two of Stockholm’s oldest and finest cinemas. Due to the pandemic, the fourth edition was arranged online and for free, thankfully reaching a bigger audience than ever.

SEAFF enriches and provides Stockholm and Scandinavia with a piece of the great diversity of ambitious and qualitative films made internationally. The festival has been given attention in both Swedish and international press and has been supported by the cultural department of Stockholm City and by the Art Grant Committee in Sweden.

The purpose and goal with SEAFF is to draw attention to filmmakers who through their versatility, artistic originality and creativity leave an unique impression on the art of film!

Event Details

Date & time:.

Thu November 5, 2015 - Sat November 7, 2015

The Block Museum of Art 40 Arts Circle Drive Evanston, IL 60208

Open to the public

Founded in 2010, the Eyeworks Festival of Experimental Animation is an invitational festival focused on abstract animation and unconventional character animation. Festival programs showcase outstanding experimental animation of all sorts, and include classic films and new works. Films presented cover an extremely broad range of animation techniques including stop-motion, computer animation, replacement animation, and a wide variety of hand-drawn methods. Concentrating on films made by individual artists, Eyeworks celebrates the enormous potential of the art of animation. This year’s festival features a historical tribute to Cecile Starr and Robert Russett’s influential book  Experimental Animation  (1976), a screening with visiting artist Takeshi Murata, and two programs of curated shorts from around the world.

Tribute to Experimental Animation

Thursday, november 5, 2015 7:00 pm (16 and 35mm, approximately 100 min. ).

Published in 1976, Robert Russett and Cecile Starr’s Experimental Animation was among the first texts to trace the trajectory of the kinetic art form by directly linking the abstract work of early pioneers to the technological breakthroughs of the 1960s and 70s. The book was a collaboration between Russett (1935-2015), an animator and scholar, and Starr (1921-2014), a critic, teacher and filmmaker, who combined their expertise of contemporary practices and early animation to compile this definitive volume. The program, curated by archivist John Klacsmann, highlights a selection of work featured in  Experimental Animation  including films by Walter Ruttmann, Mary Ellen Bute, Paul Sharits, Harry Smith, Adam Beckett, and Caroline Leaf.

Melter: Films by Takeshi Murata

Friday, november 6, 2015 7:00 pm.

Takeshi Murata’s work bridges the traditions of abstract psychedelic cinema with contemporary computer animation, glitch techniques, and uncanny realism. His optically-seductive, culturally-critical, and consciousness-lacerating animation straddles both the worlds of contemporary art and experimental cinema. Murata’s films are challenging, weird, humorous, self-aware, and impressively visionary.

Introduction and post-screening Q&A with visiting artist Takeshi Murata. Sponsored by the Department of Art Theory & Practice.

Shorts Program 1

Saturday, november 7, 2015 1:00 pm (approximately 70 min.).

The first of two shorts programs features various works including a film from Robert Breer, who is considered to be the father of avant-garde animation in America, and a film from Jules Engel, who founded the influential Experimental Animation program at CalArts. This program is arranged in the Eyeworks Festival’s signature style, with classic and contemporary selections programmed together.

Shorts Program 2

Saturday, november 7, 2015 3:30 pm (approximately 70 min.).

This second program of short films includes a visionary computer animation from the 1970s by artist Ed Emshwiller and new work by contemporary animation star Yoriko Mizushiri, whose sensual and surrealist hand-drawn works have been audience favorites in previous festivals. This program features classic and contemporary works from around the world, and includes both abstract and figurative animation.

Sundance Institute

Fueled by artistic expression and limited only by their run time, short films transcend traditional storytelling. They are a significant and popular way artists can connect with audiences. From documentary to animation, narrative to experimental, the abbreviated form is no longer just for the novice. Shorts have and will continue to be an important part of cinema, storytelling, and culture. The Sundance Film Festival has always been proud to treat short films with the highest regard and to give a home to new (and old) projects for audiences to discover and celebrate.

SEAT at Short Run!

The Seattle Experimental Animation Team was represented at the Short Run Comix & Arts Festival at the Seattle Center on November 5th last month. Animations by Britta Johnson, Chris Looney, Clyde Peterson, Drew Christie, Guinness Waller, James Webber, Nelly Goniodsky, Stefan Gruber, Tess Martin, Webster Crowell, as well as Joe Garber, Aubrey Nehring, Lydia Fu, and Alex Chiu were all displayed inside the SEAT tent, while James Webber, Stefan Gruber and Charlie Daugherty helped man the table, where zines, flipbooks and DVDs were on sale. Awesome fest everybody, ’til next year!

SEAT Zoetropes at Bumbershoot!

The Seattle Experimental Animation Team was in full force at the recent Bumbershoot festival. The team installed their three giant zoetropes sculptures which included some brand new animated loops with a ‘disaster’ theme, as well as other video/animation related installations. The zoetropes were originally constructed for the month-long SEAT & Spin exhibit at Gallery 4Culture, and we’re happy more people got to experience them. Go SEAT!

Shot in the dark: hand-crafted animated shorts from around the world

Come celebrate the re-launch of the Haptic Animation Amplifier website by watching a selection of animated short films from around the world. Curator Tess Martin is visiting from the Netherlands and bringing with her a charming program of animated shorts seen at film festivals, or discovered during her monthly animation discussion event she runs in Rotterdam called Manifest: Animation Show & Tell .

On August 8, 7PM, at the Grand Illusion Cinema , she will present the work of her non-profit Haptic Animation Amplifier, show off its revamped website (which now includes profiles on PNW animators, a timeline of animation in our region, and other useful info), and she will introduce you to inspiring independent animated shorts from Poland, Italy, France, Canada, Hungary and more. These films are innovative either in their technique, storytelling approach, or artistic point of view. They are sure to generate discussion and inspiration for the animator and animation fan alike. This event is FREE to attend and was supported, in part, by an award from 4Culture.

Our favorite stop-motion films

Still from Anomalisa

Anomalisa opens in Seattle on January 15th (find it at AMC Pacific Place). This Charlie Kaufman-penned film has been hotly anticipated by film and animation fans alike, since it’s the screenwriter’s first foray into frame by frame puppet manipulation. Its release made us think about what are OUR favorite stop-motion films? Here is a sampling:

Sihanouk Mariona (freelance animator – who also worked for a short time on Anomalisa!) picks Birdhouse , by Rich Zim:

“Birdhouse, by Rich Zim, has been one of my favorites since i first saw it in college.  It’s one of those wonderful combos of both abstract and narrative that absorbs you into its surreal world right away. Through the relationship of a regular guy and his new friend, we explore the ups and downs of friendship, dependency, loneliness and the freedom of release. Basically, the life span of most relationships.  I think we can all find something to relate to in this short film, whether it’s from the characters, the story, or the wacky environment. A strong piece, Birdhouse is definitely worth seeing and including in any animation curriculum.” Devin Ensz (freelance animator) picks Food by Jan Svankmajer:

“My favorite stop motion film is “Food” by Jan Svankmajer.  I love Svankmajer’s radical and disruptive treatment of the human body through it’s relation to food.  Svankmajer is something of an animation terrorist.  Combining pixilation and claymation, Svankmajer offers a devastating critique of capitalist values while documenting the collapse of the communist system and it’s discontents.  His animation is always surprising and completely original, and there is literally nothing like it.”

Webster Crowell (animator/director, look out for his live action/animation combo webseries Rocketmen) picks The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle by David Russo:

“A lot of modern stop-motion is too clean, the motion and the models are so tidy they could just as easily be CG without the bother of building all the stuff. David Russo is a filmmaker who knew better, his films are energetic and impatient, he’s a director who gets why our eyes are drawn to stuttering images. His feature film (The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle) is a project that wouldn’t function in lesser hands, and the animation/time lapse opening titles are stupefying.”

“I’ve always been attracted to stop motion animation, however this was the film that opened my mind to its more mature and meaningful potential. I love the symbolic, surreal, and dreamlike quality of the worlds that the Brothers Quay create. The setting, the music, the animation style, and the mystery surrounding the main character in Street of Crocodiles drew me in deeply. Their cinematic approach is always satisfying to me.”

SEAT success at Short Run

The Seattle Experimental Animation Team was happy to take part in the Short Run Comix & Arts Festival on Halloween in Seattle. We set up a tent, showed films inside and had a great time. Special thanks to James Webber for spearheading this year’s endeavor. Until next year!

SHORT RUN 2015

Comics and animation go together like peanut butter & jelly, am I right or am I right. Which is why SEAT has always had an animation tent at the SHORT RUN Comix & Arts Festival. We are going to have a mixture of animations from SEAT members, SHORT RUN exhibitors and an excerpt from Bruce Bickford’s Cas’l, plus Jim Woodring’s 3D slides, about 80 minutes of visual delights! We also have a late additional to the program, a collection of visual poetries called WRIT LARGE curated by FICTILIS , that runs about 30 minutes. Did I mention the festival is free!

Identity and Space: No Road Map

PNCA Mediatheque  511 NW Broadway Friday August 7, 2015  6:30pm

“Space and time are at the heart of animation. With the proliferation of digital technologies animation expands from the notion of 2-D screen and increasingly impacts public spaces and events – malls, bars, galleries, architecture and live performance.  Space can be, as this workshop proposes, a starting point, inspiring a reflection on issues of private and public from the sphere of the personal ideas of place and community.

Upcoming animation at the NW Film Forum!

The NW Film Forum on Capitol Hill has always had interesting programming, but more so recently with all the animation stuff they’ve been bringing in! Here are some cool looking things you might want to check out:

First and foremost is the grandmaster of indie animation himself, Bill Plympton will be visiting and giving a workshop on April 15th called Being An Indie Artist . He will also be screening his newest independently produced feature film Cheatin’ April 15-21 . Not to be missed!

Cheatin’ Trailer from Bill Plympton on Vimeo .

The cinema is also showing The King and the Mocking Bird , a recently re-released French animated feature from 1979. This film has a crazy history akin to Roger Williams’ The Thief and the Cobbler, what with it being started originally in 1947, but not finished for three more decades. This is screening March 19-23 . That’s next week!

Kelly Sears is a Denver, CO based filmmaker who specializes in collage animation and plays with documentary, recycled cinema and critical fiction. She is giving a workshop on April 19th called Get Up and Stop Down , where participants will help make animated segments that will eventually be combined with the clips made by the workshop in Portland that Kelly is leading on this same trip, resulting in a collaborative film. Sounds cool! A retrospective of her work is also screening that day at 4:30PM.

Once It Started It Could Not End Otherwise from Rooftop Films on Vimeo .

Also at the Film Forum that might be of interest is the ByDesign program April 10-14 , which always has cool films that explore the intersection of design and moving image. Filmmaker Roger Beebe is visiting and giving a Distressed Film Workshop on March 29th which sounds awesome, as well as screening a selection of his Multi-Projector Experiments (on 16MM) on March 28th that sound pretty unique.  If you want more 16MM, there is actually a program called Sweet 16 (Millimeter) on April 18th where they are screening rare 16mm films by Seattle filmmakers including our very own Webster Crowell .

And finally the Henry Art Gallery is throwing a party called the Arty Party on April 19th that will include a screening of the Best of the Fest of the Children’s Film Festival , which ran at the NW Film Forum in January. This selection includes a number of cool international shorts for kids from Germany, France, Russia, Norway, the Netherlands, Czech Republic and Japan!

A very cool selection, and that’s only for March and April!

Experimental Animation Shines in Annecy Contrechamp Title ‘Journey of Shadows’: ‘I Understand Animation as a Model to Reflect Ourselves’

'Journey of Shadows'

The minimal and subliminal converge in Swiss artist Yves Netzhammer ‘s Annecy Contrechamp title “ Journey of Shadows ” (“Reise der Schatten”).

Netzhammer, who made his feature debut with “Journey,” is well known for his work in sculpture, animation, mixed-media and video, all of which informed his animated project and abstract rendering of the human condition.

Produced by Stella Händler at Freihändler Filmproduktion GMBH and Jolanda Gsponer a Liechti Filmproduktion, who also handle world sales rights, alongside Gabriela Bloch Steinmann and SRF Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen, the film sets up three main figures on screen, two mannequin-styled forms managing a tumultuous romantic relationship through bouts of self-reflection, and a simian companion. The aesthetic is both modern and futuristic in its rendering. A delicate choreography ensues, as the figures make quick work of love’s emotional labor and the inevitable toils associated.

Contemplative and clever, while also mind-bending, taboo and raw, the nude-hued silhouettes carry all the trappings of modern flesh and bone as they meander around a veritable fugue state.

“What impresses me most is the deep humanity with which Yves’ figures address us, even though they have neither a face nor other individual attributes,” Händler relayed.

Netzhammer wrote, directed, and painstakingly animated the 3D feature, which debuted at the International Film Festival Rotterdam earlier this year.

“This animation work, as well as the technical preparation for a feature-length film, is enormously time-consuming and complex. With this approach, I believe I can offer the audience an extraordinary cinematic experience,” he added.

With no words to clutter the film’s colorful atmosphere or muddy the emotions presenting themselves through fluid movement, the forward and stalled trajectories are ever more striking. The images hold viewers captive rather than relying on a preconceived plotline full of concrete meaning. Essentially, the viewer is left to project their desires onto the austere figures, as the film calls into question our agency while ruminating on the connections we make, bend, then break.

A visceral jaunt, oddly warm and inviting while uncanny and void of precise emotion, the forms take on the plotlines cast upon them by an audience rather than being front-loaded by the filmmaker. The figures careen into and away from one another like clockwork and destiny at once, leading to an assembly line of experience for the nameless forms – at times brutal, illogical and dystopic.

“My reduced style allows for a lot of openness. This means that you can empathize with the characters and go on this cinematic journey with them. Of course, this openness also raises the question of how, or in what way, we can still tell ourselves stories in a world so saturated with information and emotions,” Netzhammer explained.

“I actually understand animation as a model to reflect ourselves in the world and how we think about the boundaries of subjective and collective freedom,” he continued.

Accompanying the characters, a sophisticated, astral score with music by Anthony Pateras, curated by sound designer Oscar Parcival van Hoogevest, that works to realize the transcendent nature of the images. Fluid morsels of matter drift through the scenes alongside it, recalling humanity but standing firmly outside any bounds equated with the species.

An affinity for non-natural artforms is apparent, as Netzhammer proclaims, “Naturalistic aesthetics and narratives run the risk of illustrating prefabricated knowledge.” By employing techniques that test the bounds of whimsy, “Journey of Shadows” is on track to provide another immersive and innovative artistic odyssey.

Fest Anča 2024 Presents Its Accompanying Programme

15 June 2024 // Festival News

' src=

Animation Magazine

experimental animation festivals

A diverse accompanying programme is essential to the Fest Anča International Animation Festival. The focus of the festival’s 17th edition – Nightmare – will also be reflected in the musical performances of remarkable inter/national performers such as DJ Lycox, ম m., Zaffer9 and Bolka , as well as in masterclasses, exhibitions, and lectures.

Tucano Urbano (also known as Filip  Smith ) will lead the festival warm-up at Stanica Žilina-Záriečie with an intense 90 minutes of fast-paced Jersey Club rhythms, UKG, and tropical-trance trap music. A great set featuring the best beats will get you on the dancefloor.

Slovak artist, DJ and dancer Krishpin will perform at the Žilina Municipal Theatre and later at the New Synagogue after the opening ceremony. His selections are based on both traditional and post-club forms of Latin American and African music: from merengue to Nigerian cruise. Across this spectrum, his sets reflect his own Central European Gen Z identity by referencing pop hits or early 2000s internet culture. The result is escalated situations that are dirty, gritty, deep, but also very funny.

Friday’s accompanying programme will take place at the Žilina-Záriečie Station. Duo Zaffer 9 ( Helena Hájková and Viktor Jenčuš ) will present a fusion of witch house, hyper-pop, noise and glitchcore in a specific concept of club electronica. Prepare for soaring vocals, deconstructed rhythms, and melodies inspired by the angst of the post-internet age.

A nightmare fusion of film and music will be brought to life with a screening of an adult puppet fairy tale called Blood Time and Red String created by independent American director Christiane Cegavske over a period of 13 years. This mystical world’s soundtrack will be performed by the Slovak sound artist Bolka . His subversive musical production is charmingly entertaining and sonically complex – bordering on experimental pop and sound design.

Evil Medvěd , the project of Scottish-Czech artist Faolan McGowan , will also be performed live. They are interested in organic analogue creation through modular synthesis. Their production is intricate, yet playful, tender, and personal. They often hold workshops at Synth Library Prague, a feminist institution committed to providing access to music technology while presenting a platform for critical thinking

Experimental baile funk, dembow and reggaeton will be mixed by Slovak music journalist DJ VLZQUES b2b yangovica . They will be joined with a VJ set by Kristýna Sidlárová alias sida100 , a Czech visual artist and graphic designer, whose works have been shown at London’s Tate Modern.

Friday evening will also feature a distinctive atmosphere of disparate but melodic and breathtaking music, stripped to its very core, presented by Alina Astrova , performing under the artistic name Lolina . Before embarking on her solo career, she was part of the duo Hype Williams with Dean Blunt. She currently tackles themes such as hostility, immigration and social inequality in London, while her hazy vocals absorb the words into haunting melodies to create something uniquely beautiful.

On Saturday, at Stanici Žilina-Záriečie, Fest Anča visitors can look forward to percussive sets building on the Global South rhythms to trace collaborative musical histories and hybridities across the wider region from the hyper-talented Vienna-based ম m. (mwo). Their sets question how the roots of queer and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, (and) People of Color) club music are reflected, erased and appropriated across the Western club spectrum.

“It’s important for me to be constantly in conversation with the dance floor, and to be critical of how these spaces are constructed and, most importantly, who they are designed for. My tendency is to focus on queerness and recreate ideas of nightlife and dance from Euro-American club culture, ” says মm.

PiNKBUS: Venice Intervention will also be presented on Saturday. An award-winning contemporary dance and physical theatre dancer, choreographer and performer Martin “Venice” Talaga is also interested in experimental and visual works, folk dance and drag. During his studies and professional career, he has successfully collaborated with many choreographers, theatre directors and companies.

Multidisciplinary artist seafur will light up the dance floor at Station Žilina-Záriečie with a blend of genres, decades and moods. seafur likes to demolish the concept of guilty pleasures, so the eclectic selection will include hyperpop and salsa, dembow and synthpop, batida and soundcloud bootlegs. seafur will be accompanied by Sewingbug – a VJ and director of short animated films based in Krakow and Seoul – as part of the VJ set. Sewingbug uses bizarre 3D and 2D animations in his work and has performed at several major events such as Berlin Artweeks, Seoul NADA FEST and VJ battle in Gdansk.

Parisian producer DJ Lycox will oversee the festival’s exciting and energetic finale. The range of his musical productions is wide – introspective afrohouse sits alongside cinematic jungle excursions, and slower BPMs are followed by more melodic tracks with traditional “latas” batida percussions.

There’s more…

In addition to the musical programme, Fest Anča also prepared an accompanying programme. Nikita Diakur , the main guest of the festival and a leading name in contemporary animation, will present his distinctive work using glitch aesthetics at a masterclass. The masterclass will be followed by a screening of his films.

Cinematographer Denisa Buranová and her camera team will talk about their work on the award-winning children’s puppet film Tony, Shelly and the Magic Light, and for animators and cinematographers they have also prepared a practical workshop Behind the scenes of stop-motion animation . Their film will be screened as part of the Fest Anča programme.

Katarína Nádaská , a leading Slovak ethnologist and historian, will give a lecture about nightmares in a historical context. She will focus mainly on the experiences of queer people in the Slovak countryside.

The exhibition Nevedomie by the Slovak animator Martina Malovaníková , who also works in painting and illustration, will be full of suggestions about drastic contemporary impulses, preserved in distant places of the mind. In the exhibition Unless Useless , the artist Toasted_Bread will bring the content of emotional reflections into a raw environment. He works as a volunteer for the European Solidarity Corps in the cultural centres New Synagogue and Stanica Žilina-Záriečie.

At Stanici Žilina-Záriečie you will be able to see posters by Slovak visual artist and animator Matej Mihályi , which he created for the BAB Festival. After a long break, the legendary Animation Karaoke Battle format will also return to Fest Anča. This challenge aims to showcase any creative activity during a randomly selected film.
