As a result of today’s class, you should know:

  • The 6 Dimensions of Wellness and how they are interrelated

Wellness: The New Health Goal

  • Health is the combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being.
  • Is subject to constant change (i.e. you get sick, an athletic injury, etc.)
  • Falls along a continuum (from premature death to high levels of health)
  • Wellness refers to an overall state of well- being, total health
  • Health differs based on factors beyond your control, such as genes, age, environm ent, media, and family history
  • Wellness is determined by the decisions you make about the way you live
  • These two words can be used interchangeably and will be throughout this course
  • Wellness = an overall state of well-being, total health

Wellness Continuum

Health/Wellness Continuum

  • Your health is always changing
  • The Health continuum identifies your level of health at a given moment in time
  • The dimensions of wellness all impact your overall health
  • The dimensions are not exclusive; when one is affected, most often, others are too.
  • Every decision you make affects where you fall on the health continuum
  • Man vs. Wild Clip
  • Think about the dimensions of wellness present in this clip. Which dimensions are present and how do they affect Bear Grylls in this clip? Consider the context of the situation and the interrelatedness of the dimensions of wellness.

Wellbeing Self-Reflection Prompts PowerPoint teaching resource

Deepen Classroom Mindfulness with Student Self-Reflection Exercises

Self-reflection is HARD work.  As adults, these personal ‘time-outs’ are a challenge because of our days’ endless tasks and distractions. But when we prioritise our wellbeing, looking inward allows us to take time for ourselves—to determine what we need to be at our best and when to take a step back and take care of our mental, physical and emotional health.  And when you encourage your students to learn this beneficial habit early, they’ll be more likely to carry it into adulthood!

These self-reflection prompts help students think about parts of their lives that directly or indirectly contribute to their sense of wellbeing. These check-ins are an excellent tool for giving students space to consider their mindset. Additionally, these prompts can provide insights into students’ behaviour that impairs or interferes with learning.  The prompts cover a range of topics related to physical, mental and emotional health, such as:

  • emotional intelligence
  • resilience strategies
  • lifestyle habits.

Students can interact with the prompts by writing their responses, drawing a picture, or verbally sharing their thoughts with the class, small group or a partner.   One download includes 50 prompts, making it easy to consistently check in with your students during the school year.

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support personal and social capability in the classroom.  In addition to individual student work time, use this activity to enhance learning through guided groups, whole class lessons, or remote learning assignments.  If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, we have a few suggestions for keeping students on track with these concepts:

🧑‍🏫 Group Learning

Project the slides onto a screen and work through them as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks or mini whiteboards.  Appoint students in need of a challenge to leadership roles in a small group .

🗣️ Turn & Talk

Invite students to pair up with someone in the seat nearest to them for a 5-minute Turn & Talk. Students should use this session to make space for each other by actively listening, asking questions and practising empathy.

🆘 Support Struggling Students

Use these prompts in a 1:1 intervention setting to give students a safe space to discuss their feelings in private. Additionally, provide students with a personal journal to write their self-reflections. They can choose to share their thoughts with a peer or a teacher if they feel comfortable.

Easily Prepare This Resource for Your Students

Use the dropdown icon on the Download button to choose between the PowerPoint or PDF versions of this resource.  Alternatively, print slides to use for your:

  • daily warm-ups
  • end of the day wrap-ups
  • fast finisher activities
  • homework assignments.

Insights Into the Pandemic’s Impact on Student Well-Being

We explore how our shift out of the pandemic is impacting student relationships, motivation, and emotional well-being..

A group of people sitting on a couch in a room with tables and chairs.

Editor’s note: This is the fourth blog in this series. To learn more about the 2023 Education Engagement Index survey, please read part one with overall findings, part two on hybrid learning, and part three on academic workplace. Learn more about our survey method here .

The COVID-19 pandemic brought a new focus on well-being, not just physical, but also emotional well-being and other factors that support a multidimensional approach to health. This is especially relevant on college and university campuses, where the current cohort of students had their education disrupted by the pandemic. Whether in high school or college at the time, they were forced to isolate during a critical point in their personal and academic development.

In this installment of our Education Engagement Index blog series, we look at how our shift out of the pandemic is impacting student relationships, motivation, and emotional well-being.

For the purpose of the study, we explore engagement using the following framework:

Table.

In our national survey of 2,500 students, educators, and staff at U.S.-based colleges and universities, we asked students about their relationships with instructors, mentors, peers, and advisors, and in all cases they reported weaker relationships in 2023 than in 2022, with some falling below pre-COVID levels. Similarly, on the questions related to motivation and emotional well-being, there was a significant decline in nearly all questions.

Students’ sense of belonging is of particular concern, as this was the lowest scoring question, and it shows the greatest decline from pre-COVID level. This data was surprising to the research team. According to our research, students’ presence on campus increased between 2022 and 2023. However, this increase in contact with others does not appear to have translated to improved relationships, sense of belonging, or other aspects of emotional well-being.

Timeline.

When we disaggregated the responses by students’ modality of learning — fully on campus, fully virtual, or hybrid — there were no significant differences between the groups. This suggests that relationships, motivation, and emotional well-being are not significantly impacted by modality; instead, other factors have a greater effect, which could include broader health considerations, conditions within the institutions, and geopolitical conditions.

The role of the campus community

We were curious if (and how) students’ relationships may impact their motivation and emotional well-being. In analyzing the responses across these question sets (through multiple linear regressions), we found that instructors have the greatest impact on students’ motivation, and peers have the greatest impact on students’ emotional well-being. Advisors had the least impact on motivation and emotional well-being of these four relationship types.

Chart.

Embracing a Multimodal Approach to Student Services

We cannot explore relationships, motivation, and emotional well-being without considering the ecosystem of services that are supporting students. Many institutions are increasing their range of services, as well as the depth of support that they provide. In looking at how students would like to engage with services, responses indicate that having both in person and virtual options are very important, and there is a desire for virtual access to all services.

If institutions embrace a multimodal approach to providing services and support, there are many potential benefits. Although this may require a shift in mindset and an investment in technology, campuses may be able to reduce office space and make real estate available for other uses, while satisfying students’ desire for choice in how they access support.

Chart.

Although, for many, the pandemic is in the past, we are still feeling its effects and understanding its impact. There may be longer lasting negative impacts on health and well-being than we anticipated, but there may also be positive outcomes, based on our resilience and ability to develop solutions, that take hold in the “new normal” that is emerging. As institutions settle in to the post-pandemic landscape, it is essential to continue to support relationships, motivation, and emotional well-being in a multidimensional approach to student health and success.

Education Engagement Index 2023 Methodology

We deployed an online survey to an anonymous panel of 2,479 students, educators, and staff members at U.S.-based colleges and universities. Responses were collected from May 1 to June 7, 2023. This study was conducted through the Gensler Research Institute, a network of researchers and thought leaders who create insights that our education designers and strategists can use to tackle campuses’ toughest challenges, such as the student, faculty, and staff experience.

Supporting Student Mental Health: Key Takeaways From School and District Staff

Date posted:.

wellbeing powerpoint presentation for students

Mental health concerns among youth remain prevalent following the COVID-19 pandemic. Percentages of youth experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety or traumatic stress are particularly troublesome. In fact, the National Center for Education Statistics reported that almost 60% of public schools noted increases in youth requesting school-based mental health services last school year.

Given these rising mental health concerns, K-12 schools are an important setting to help address youth mental health needs. In particular, schools are well-suited to provide mental health prevention programs to support the well-being of all students, which are known as Tier I services, as well as to provide targeted interventions to those at risk, which are Tier II services.

Researchers from PolicyLab have worked closely with local school districts on several studies of Tier I and Tier II mental health programs and other initiatives. This connection provided an opportunity to build on these relationships to work together on the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Tri-County School Mental Health Consortium (SMHC) . In SMHC, our team of CHOP researchers is partnering with the Chester, Delaware and Montgomery County Intermediate Units to support public schools’ Tier I and Tier II mental health efforts. In Pennsylvania, Intermediate Units are regional education agencies that provide a range of services to schools and districts.

During the first phase of this project, we wanted to learn from district and school leaders, teachers, and other student support staff who are on the front lines of supporting student mental health and well-being.

We surveyed school district leaders and conducted qualitative interviews with each of these groups of school professionals. Our goals were to learn about the current landscape of Tier I and Tier II mental health programming in this region. We also wanted to understand what programs are in place, what is going well, and what school and district staff see as key needs and priorities to help support students.

Through this phase of our research, we identified several key takeaways:

1. Regardless of their roles, school and district staff care deeply about student mental health and well-being.

Many educators we spoke with recognized that student mental health and well-being are closely linked with academic engagement. Although they shared that it can be challenging to support student mental health within the context of limited resources, competing demands, and schools' primary focus on academics, they also shared their dedication to doing so.

2. Schools and districts face continued challenges regarding unmet youth mental health needs.

Many of the school professionals we spoke with shared that they have seen increased mental health needs among students in recent years. Many educators expressed particular concern about anxiety among students. They frequently attributed this and related concerns to structural factors, including disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, stressors related to social media use, and academic demands.

One district leader emphasized the link between youth anxiety and increased school demands: “I think anxiety is probably at the top of the list, and I think there’s a variety of reasons. I think there’s a lot of pressure around students being exceptional all the time.”

3. Schools and districts are utilizing innovative and thoughtful approaches to support implementation of Tier I and Tier II programming .

School and district staff described approaches they use to garner buy-in from key parties in many roles, including students and caregivers. They also described the importance of using a “common language” within the school building and aligning programming to school and district structures and priorities.

4. Supporting youth mental health takes a team effort.

Educators spoke about the importance of partnerships: they highlighted the value of their partnerships with Intermediate Units and academic partners, and how much they benefit from collaborating with and learning from other schools and districts.

As one school principal shared, “I think communication is critical, and just the partnerships between the different agencies…and make sure that the stakeholders that need to be at that table talking about this are at the table.” Other educators highlighted the critical importance of being able to connect students to mental health resources in the community, including higher levels of care when necessary.

We were grateful to have the opportunity to learn from school and district staff, as these individuals have important perspectives about youth mental health needs and priorities for school-based programming.

Our learnings from this phase of the research highlight the importance of mental health prevention programming in schools, particularly given the level of mental health needs that school and district staff see during their day-to-day work. Our learnings also highlight the excellent work that schools and districts are already doing to support student mental health and well-being. We plan to disseminate these findings over the coming year, through presentations and publications aimed at both school and research audiences.

We hope that the next phase of the SMHC project , which includes learning collaboratives to inform and support Tier I and Tier II programs, can build upon these strengths to provide another layer of support for schools and districts in helping their students thrive.
