Hollywood news anchors ducked under their desk during a live broadcast Monday morning as a 4.4-magnitude earthquake rolled across the Los Angeles basin, rattling nerves and shaking buildings.

“Earthquake! We’re having an earthquake,” Chris Schauble said, cutting off his co-anchor Megan Henderson mid-sentence.

The KTLA-5 anchors took cover as the camera and studio shook. Less than ten seconds later, they emerged from underneath their desk and quickly resumed the broadcast by seeking USGS information.

“It appears to have stopped. We’re going to jump right now to the U.S. Geological Survey,” Schauble said. “Let’s get right on that right now. That felt very close.”

Some people have made fun of the news team for their response to what ended up being a “typical” Southern California quake that caused only slight damage, if any at all. But Dr. Lucy Jones, a seismologist with USGS, told KTLA-TV that it was “absolutely the right thing to do.”

“People who are laughing at them for doing it, you don’t know at the beginning how big an earthquake’s going to be,” she said. “You might feel a little silly doing it for the small ones, but when the big one happens, it means you stay alive after the lights come crashing down.”

The 4.4-magnitude quake was centred three kilometres from Encino and 24 kilometres west-northwest of the downtown civic centre and shook a 240-kilometre swath of Southern California, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

USGS seismologist Robert Graves called it a “typical” Southern California quake and Los Angeles police and fire officials said there were no immediate reports of damage.

Encino resident Joann Smith described the initial jolt as “a big crash” that shook her house.

“My dog got out of bed and she came looking for me,” Smith said. “She was shivering terribly.”

The 6:25 a.m. quake occurred at a depth of about 8 kilometres. There were several aftershocks, including one of 2.7 magnitude that caused very minor shaking, Graves said.

The whole kitchen was shaking

Marita Ipaktchia was in the kitchen at her Encino home when the quake hit, sending salt and pepper shakers and collectible glass figurines on her shelves crashing to the ground.

“The whole kitchen was shaking,” she said “Everything broke. Everything came down.”

The quake was felt as far away as Orange County to the south and Santa Barbara to the north.

It was one of the largest to hit Los Angeles since the 6.7-magnitude Northridge quake killed several dozen and caused $25 billion in damage two decades ago, Lucy Jones, a USGS seismologist, told KABC-TV.

“It’s not that large by California terms. It’s the size of earthquake we have across the state once every couple of months,” Jones said. “But we haven’t had one like this in LA for quite a while.”

A magnitude 4.7 quake struck near Inglewood in 2009, she said.

“I was in bed and I heard the rumbling. The bed was moving,” said Rania Jurdi, a school therapist who lives in Glendale. “I jumped out of bed and ran to the kids’ room. Everybody was asleep.”

Jurdi said that’s only proof that her two teenagers can sleep through anything.

The quake was somewhat unusual because of its location within the Santa Monica Mountains, a 64-kilometre-long range that crosses Los Angeles and stretches west through Malibu to Ventura County.

Seismologist Egill Hauksson, a veteran researcher at Caltech, said it was the only magnitude-4.4 temblor within the range since recording of earthquakes began.

“The Santa Monica Mountains are a very old rock formation, hundreds of millions of years old, and we sort of think of it as being a very rigid block. And the earthquakes tend to cluster either north of them or south of them but don’t seem to be occurring within the mountains,” he told a Caltech press conference.

The quake was, however, “par for the course in Southern California” and would likely only be studied briefly to understand how it fits in with previous activity, Hauksson said.

Southern California has been in a seismic lull since significant quakes of the 1980s and 1990s. Whether Monday’s quake signalled an end to that “earthquake drought” won’t be known for many months because it takes a long period to show whether the rate of activity has changed, he said.

Norah O’Donnell to Exit as ‘CBS Evening News’ Anchor to Become Senior Correspondent

NORAH O'DONNELL CBS News

Norah O’Donnell will cede the reins of the venerable “ CBS Evening News ” after the 2024 presidential election in favor of a new role as a senior correspondent who will seek out big interviews and opportunities for deeper reporting, the latest major change at CBS News after its business was merged with that of the local-TV operations of parent company Paramount Global.

‘deadpool & wolverine’ underscores mcu’s much-needed evolution, jelly roll performs — and gets in the ring — at wwe summerslam in cleveland, mgk joins in too, popular on variety.

O’Donnell will continue to anchor all of CBS News’ major coverage leading up to the 2024 Election including the Democratic National Convention, Election Night, and more.  In her new role, O’Donnell will continue to contribute to “Evening News,” “60 Minutes” and other CBS News programs. The new arrangement is understood to be part of a longer-term commitment that the anchor and CBS News are making to one another.

Under McMahon, CBS News has focused more intently on utilizing both national and local journalists for broader coverage, and recently unveiled a new “whip-around” streaming concept that relies on contributions from both the journalists at CBS News and the newsrooms at various CBS-owned local stations.

McMahon sees O’Donnell’s shift as one that will help her broader efforts. “Norah’s superpower is her ability to secure and then masterfully deliver unparalleled interviews and stories that set the news cycle and capture the cultural zeitgeist,’ McMahon said in a memo, adding: “How many people can effortlessly shift from field-anchoring on an aircraft carrier in the Red Sea to sitting down with Bono and Dolly Parton? Norah’s work here is legendary, and she has several major interviews in the works that will be equally memorable and momentous.”

In some ways, the move emulates one made at ABC News that set up Diane Sawyer as a sort of roving correspondent who could take on stories and interviews that made news on their own, but weren’t necessarily tied to the immediate news cycle.

O’Donnell’s work at “CBS Evening News” has been recognized by many arbiters of quality journalism. She has long investigated how the military investigates claims of sexual harassment and abuse ; both her father and sister have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

At the same time, the august show, which has ties to Walter Cronkite, has languished in third place behind ABC’s “World News Tonight” and NBC’s “NBC Nightly News” for decades. CBS News executives in the past have considered alternatives for the program. O’Donnell took the show to Washington, D.C. , rather than its longtime roost in New York City , in a bid to cover the nation’s tumultuous political cycle more closely.

While ABC News and NBC News have backed years-long evening-news runs by anchors such as Sawyer and David Muir or Brian Williams and Lester Holt, CBS News keeps tinkering with the talent behind the desk. Since Dan Rather’s exit in 2005, CBS has tapped Bob Schieffer, Katie Couric, Harry Smith, Scott Pelley, Anthony Mason and Jeff Glor.

CBS News has not named a replacement for O’Donnell — and it is widely believed the network is not inclined to anoint a single heir. Among those who could be viewed as potential successors are Margaret Brennan, the “Face The Nation” moderator, or Major Garrett, the Washington correspondent both of whom sometimes fill in when O’Donnell is off or on assignment; James Brown, the “NFL Today” moderator and CBS News special correspondent, who also fills in on occasion; or weekend anchors Jericka Duncan or Adriana Diaz.

Chargers' Justin Herbert Sidelined For Weeks With New Injury

The Los Angeles Chargers have been hit with a huge injury, as starting quarterback and star Justin Herbert will now be sidelined with an injury to the plantar fascia in his right foot.

Justin Herbert was diagnosed with an injury to the plantar fascia in his right foot, #Chargers announce. Per team: Doctors recommended two weeks in a boot, then graduated return to play. Expectation is he will be ready for the start of the regular season. — Daniel Popper (@danielrpopper) August 1, 2024

According to longtime Chargers beat writer, Daniel Popper:

"Justin Herbert was diagnosed with an injury to the plantar fascia in his right foot, Chargers announce. Per team: Doctors recommended two weeks in a boot, then graduated return to play. Expectation is he will be ready for the start of the regular season."

The good news is that it appears Herbert has only suffered a minor injury and will be in a walking boot for only two weeks. Popper indicated that Herbert should be ready to go for the start of the regular season, which is on Sep. 8.

The Chargers cannot afford another injury to Herbert, as he spent 2023 with a broken finger on his non-throwing hand. Despite the injury being on his left hand, it would be believed that the discomfort of that injury could have impacted his performance heavily.

Even worse Herbert also broke a finger on his throwing hand during Week 14 and was taken out for the rest of the season to undergo surgery on the broken finger.

The result of the injuries that Herbert faced in 2023 led to a less-than-stellar campaign resulting in the team going 5-12 overall.

The offense prowess of the Chargers lives and dies on Herbert having the time to load up and throw the ball with accuracy. Protection for Herbert has been paramount, and though the team lost center Corey Linsley, they signed Bradley Bozeman and drafted Joe Alt No. 5 overall to ensure the offensive line has solid starters.

Herbert suffered injuries in 2023 due to the offensive line not being at its best, and the result of that was his having to end his season prematurely.

Now, it appears Herbert will be nursing a leg injury that will keep him out of the rest of training camp and preseason. The hope is that he heals quickly enough to start on Sep. 8, otherwise, Easton Stick will likely get the start against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Herbert needs to be fully healthy to give the offense the best chance at making some noise, especially with the questionable receiver room the team is heading into 2024 with. Though DJ Chark Jr. and Joshua Palmer can be playmakers, Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston are more of the bigger question marks.
