ABOUT THE PROGRAMME The Occupational Associate Degree Programme in Allied Health Care (Geriatrics) is developed for persons who are desirous of developing the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to become well-rounded in providing direct health care to the elderly including nutrition for the elderly with special needs.
Upon completion of this programme graduates should be able to:
- Efficiently apply the theories of aging to geriatric care
- Promote and supervise health and wellness in the elderly/older adults
- Apply an understanding of complementary and alternative medicine & polypharmacy issues in older adults
- Promote safety while interacting with the elderly
- Apply the understanding of age related disorders in geriatric care

- Duration: 6mths
- Contact Hours: 500 hrs
- Wednesday or Saturday or Thursday - 5:30pm- 8:30pm or 9:00am - 4:00pm- Dates and times are tentative & subject to change.
Course Description
AA Geriatric nurse cares for the elderly, focusing on the development and implementation of treatment plans for chronic illnesses, including diabetes, hypertension and respiratory disorders. They also educate and counsel families of elderly patients who suffer from acute and chronic conditions.
Geriatric nurses are educated to understand and treat the often complex physical and mental health needs of older people. They try to help their patients protect their health and cope with changes in their mental and physical abilities, so older people can stay independent and active as long as possible.
Geriatric nurses must enjoy working with older people. They must be patient, listen extremely carefully and balance the needs of their patients with sometimes conflicting demands from family members.
As a geriatric nurse, you will be required to perform a number of duties. For example, you will often be responsible for:
- Measuring and recording vital signs
- Assist with administering medications
- Exercising and massaging patients
- Watching for signs of pressure ulcer
- Transporting patients to doctor’s visits and other appointments
- Helping patients with their daily needs, such as bathing, dressing, and using the bathroom
- Skilled nursing facilities.

HEALTH PROFESSIONALS
This National Vocational Qualification in CSA20222 NVQ Level 2 in Geriatrics Care and prepares individuals to perform work in primary, secondary and tertiary health care services in clinics, hospitals, or in outpatient settings, such as homes and institutions. The knowledge and skills components of this qualification, prepares individuals with the responsibilities in Geriatric Care and include taking care of patients’ needs in terms of maintaining physical hygiene, meeting the patient’s nutritional needs, and maintaining a safe and clean environment for the patient. Routine nursing tasks such as measuring and charting vital signs, collecting specimens for laboratory tests and reporting any abnormalities in physical or psychological behaviour to the supervising doctor, registered nurse, midwife or nurse practitioner are carried out by persons who receive this qualification.
