Essay on Healthy Lifestyle

The top secret of being physically fit is adopting a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle includes regular exercise, a healthy diet, taking good care of self, healthy sleep habits, and having a physically active daily routine. Lifestyle is the most prevailing factor that affects one’s fitness level. A person leading a sedentary lifestyle has a low fitness level whereas living a healthier life not only makes a person fit but also extends life. Good health has a direct impact on our personality. A person with a good and healthy lifestyle is generally more confident, self-assured, sociable, and energetic.

A good and healthy lifestyle allows one to relish and savor all the pleasures in life without any complications. Even all the wealth is less valuable when compared to sound health. Having all the luxuries in the world does not fulfill its purpose when one is continuously ill, depressed, or suffering from a significant health complication. A healthy person has a clear and calm perception of everything without prejudice. His actions and decisions are more practical and logical and are hence more successful in life.

A good habit is a key factor for a healthy lifestyle. To maintain a stable body and mind, one needs to inculcate good habits. Waking up early in the morning, regularly exercising or a good morning walk helps to keep our body energetic and refresh our mind. Maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet throughout the day is vital for maintaining a good lifestyle. Too much indulgence in alcohol or smoking excessively is not at all appropriate for a healthy lifestyle.

Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is important for maintaining a good lifestyle. When we are self-disciplined then we are more organized and regular in maintaining good health. A disciplined life is a regulated life. A man without discipline is a ship without a rudder. Discipline needs self-control. One who cannot control himself can seldom control others. The level of discipline and perseverance largely determines a person’s success. Self-discipline is the act of disciplining one’s own feelings, desires, etc. especially with the intention of improving oneself. It strengthens our willpower. The stronger our will power the positive will be our decision. It enables us to conquer our own self.

Punctuality

Punctuality is the habit of doing things on time. It is the characteristic of every successful person and everyone must observe punctuality in order to win success in life. Punctuality is necessary for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It should become a habit with us. A punctual person is able to fulfill all his responsibilities and hence is treated with respect in society. It is needed in every walk of life.

Diet is an important component for overall fitness and works best in combination with exercise. A balanced diet and exercise regularly help to maintain good health. It is necessary to reduce weight if one is overweight or obese, failing which one cannot be physically fit for long. For people with obesity, more exercise and a strict regime are necessary, preferably under guidance. There are many ways of making the diet healthier.

Use less sugar and salt while cooking food.

Use less oil while cooking. Avoid deep-frying as much as possible.

Eat more fruits daily. They provide more vitamins and minerals to our bodies.

Add sprouts of gram and moong dal to at least one meal in a day. Add fiber to your diet. Use whole grains instead of polished cereals. Eat lots of salad and yogurt.

Eat fermented food regularly. Fermented food contains many useful bacteria that help in the process of digestion.

Prevention of Lifestyle Diseases

By adopting a healthy lifestyle one can avoid lifestyle diseases. The following are some ways in which we can prevent lifestyle diseases.

Eat a balanced diet that contains important nutrients. One must include more fresh fruits and green vegetables in the diet. Refrain from eating junk food. Stay away from foods that contain large amounts of salt or sugar.

Exercise regularly. Spend more time outdoors and do activities such as walking, running, swimming, and cycling.

One must avoid overindulgence in alcohol, junk food, smoking, and addiction to drugs and medicines.

Avoid spending too much on modern gadgets like mobile phones, laptops, televisions, etc. Spend time on these gadgets for short intervals of time only.

Set a healthy sleeping routine for every day. Waking early in the morning and going to bed early at night should be a daily habit. Lead an active life.

Unhealthy Lifestyle

Bad food habits and an unhealthy lifestyle such as less or no physical activity may lead to several diseases like obesity, high blood pressure or hypertension, diabetes, anemia, and various heart diseases. An unhealthy lifestyle reduces productivity and creativity in a person. It also adversely affects moods and relationships. It leads to depression and anxiety in human beings.

Having a healthy lifestyle is all about choosing to live your life in the most healthy way possible. There are a few things you have to do to start living your life in this way, i.e., the healthy way. This means doing some amount of exercise daily, such as jogging, yoga, playing sports, etc. Adding to this, you must also have a balanced and nutritional diet with all the food groups. It would be best if you were taking the right amount of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and fats to help you have a proper diet. Grouped with these two essential aspects (diet and exercise), a healthy person also maintains the same sleep cycle, which should consist of around 7-8 hours of sleep.

However, we must remember that a healthy lifestyle not only refers to our physical and mental health. Maintaining a balanced diet, exercising daily, and sleeping well are essential parts of a healthy lifestyle. But feeling happy is also a big part of a healthy lifestyle. To enable happiness, thinking positively is a must. When a person does not feel happy or good about themselves, they are not entirely healthy. Thus we must do our best to think positively so that we can feel happy rather than sad.

We have talked about what all entails a healthy life, so now we must speak of what all does not. There are several things that one must avoid in order to live a healthy lifestyle. These include the kind of practices and habits that are harmful to us and also to the people around us, i.e., society. Such practices and habits include gambling, smoking, drinking, illegal drugs, or any other things that can turn into an addiction. These habits are harmful to not only you but for all the people around you, as addiction causes unhealthy attitudes and behaviors. Other unhealthy practices include skipping meals and eating junk food.

The benefits of a healthy lifestyle are manifold: living a healthy life allows you to live longer, which means that you get to spend more time with your family. Exercising daily will enable you to release endorphins and helps you feel happier. Regular exercise also improves the health of your skin and hair, bettering your appearance as well. Healthy lifestyles also primarily reduce your risk of life-threatening diseases such as cancer, diabetes, etc. and also reduce your susceptibility to cardiac arrests.

However, the majority of individuals disregard their health in favour of their everyday obligations. The worst thing you can do to yourself is to ignore your health. Many individuals only become aware of this after experiencing health problems.

For these individuals, painkillers work best, but it is important to understand that they only provide brief comfort and may have harmful side effects.

It's time to adopt healthy routines. Knowing the behaviours to avoid can help you take steps to stop doing them and replace them with healthy ones. You may take the following actions in this direction:

Restrict your interactions with those who smoke, drink, or engage in other harmful behaviours.

Remind yourself of the advantages of living healthfully.

250 Words Essay on Healthy Lifestyle

The concept of a healthy lifestyle is not just about eating nutritious food and engaging in physical activities. It is a holistic approach to wellbeing that includes mental, emotional, and social health.

Importance of Balanced Nutrition

Nutrition plays a pivotal role in maintaining health. Consuming a balanced diet rich in proteins, vitamins, minerals, and fiber helps in boosting immunity, energy levels, and overall physical health. However, it’s not just about what you eat but also how and when you eat. Mindful eating and maintaining a regular eating schedule can significantly contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

Physical Activity and Its Impact

Physical activity is another cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise helps in maintaining a healthy weight, reducing the risk of chronic diseases, and promoting mental health. It does not necessarily mean spending hours in the gym; even simple activities like walking, cycling, or yoga can have profound benefits.

Mental and Emotional Wellbeing

Mental and emotional health is often overlooked in the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle. Stress management, sufficient sleep, and nurturing relationships contribute to emotional health, which in turn impacts physical health.

Social Health: An Integral Part

Social health is about maintaining healthy relationships and having a sense of connection and belonging. It involves balancing personal needs with those of the community and environment, fostering empathy, and building strong support systems.

In conclusion, a healthy lifestyle is a multifaceted concept. It involves balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, mental and emotional wellbeing, and social health. By adopting such a lifestyle, one can significantly enhance their quality of life and longevity.

500 Words Essay on Healthy Lifestyle

The concept of a healthy lifestyle is not just about eating nutritious food and getting enough physical exercise. It encompasses a much broader spectrum of behaviors that contribute to physical, mental, and social well-being. A healthy lifestyle is a conscious choice that one makes and is a crucial step towards a fulfilling life.

The Pillars of a Healthy Lifestyle

The foundation of a healthy lifestyle rests on four pillars: a balanced diet, regular physical activity, adequate rest, and mental well-being.

Regular physical activity is another cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle. It can help prevent chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, and stroke. It also promotes mental health, reduces stress, and improves sleep.

Adequate rest is often overlooked in discussions about a healthy lifestyle. However, it is just as important as diet and exercise. Lack of sleep can lead to a range of health problems, including obesity, diabetes, and even heart disease.

The Role of Mindfulness in a Healthy Lifestyle

Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. It is a powerful tool to help manage stress, enhance emotional intelligence, and improve overall health. Incorporating mindfulness into daily routines can significantly contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

Challenges and Solutions

Despite the known benefits of a healthy lifestyle, many individuals face challenges in maintaining one. These challenges include lack of time, inability to stick to a routine, lack of motivation, and limited access to healthy foods or fitness facilities.

In conclusion, a healthy lifestyle is a valuable asset to one’s life. It not only improves physical health but also contributes significantly to mental and social well-being. Despite the challenges, with determination, discipline, and a positive outlook, everyone can lead a healthy lifestyle. It is a journey, not a destination, and each small step towards it is a step towards a healthier, happier life.

Top 10 Tips for Staying Healthy

essay ways to have a healthy lifestyle

Some lifestyle choices can make a big difference when it comes to your mental and physical well-being and the quality of your life. Here are the top 10 tips for good health and longevity.

A woman works on staying healthy by walking, taking a hike along a path in the woods.

Staying healthy involves making certain choices. And many of those choices are in your hands. Of course, your age, family history, and genetic makeup can influence your health and make you more prone to certain conditions.

There are also many factors that you can control — many of which play a key role in keeping you healthy and helping you live a long, productive life.

Let’s look at 10 science-backed healthy choices you can make to help you thrive throughout your life.

1. Get moving

If you want to feel healthier, more energized, or in a better mood, get moving. Regular exercise can benefit both your physical and mental health in a multitude of ways. And, you don’t need to run a half-marathon or sweat it out at the gym for hours every day to reap the rewards.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, if you’re an adult, just 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity a week, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week, can positively impact your health.

That breaks down to around 22 minutes a day of moderate-intensity exercise, like brisk walking, dancing, cycling, or even doing yard work or household chores. As long as you’re moving and not sitting still, it counts.

Regular physical activity can positively impact your health in many ways. For instance, it can:

  • Improve your heart health: Exercise benefits your heart health , and having a stronger heart can help lower your risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • Boost your brain health: Regular exercise may help improve your cognition and reduce the risk of dementia .
  • Improve your mood: Physical activity has also been shown to reduce the risk of depression and anxiety.
  • Help with weight management: When you move your body, you burn more calories than you would if you were inactive. Burning more calories each day can make it easier to lose weight and keep weight off.
  • Strengthen your bones and muscles: Being physically active can keep your bones and muscles strong and make it easier to move around easily, even as you age.
  • Reduce the risk of chronic diseases: Staying active may help lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes and several types of cancer .

2. Eat more whole foods (and less processed food)

Whole foods are foods that haven’t been heavily processed or altered. They don’t contain a lot of added chemicals or artificial ingredients to help them taste good or give them a long shelf-life.

In general, whole foods are healthier for you and provide your body with more vitamins, minerals, and essential nutrients than processed foods. Because they are more nutritious , whole foods give you more energy and possibly lower the risk of many types of health issues.

Processed foods are often unhealthier than whole foods because they tend to be higher in certain ingredients such as:

  • added sugars or artificial sweeteners
  • salt (sodium)
  • preservatives
  • artificial colors

Whole foods vs. processed foods

Some examples of whole foods include:

  • fruits and vegetables
  • nuts and seeds
  • legumes (beans and lentils)
  • meat and poultry
  • fish and seafood
  • plain yogurt
  • whole grains (brown rice, quinoa, steel-cut oatmeal, farro, bulgur)

Some examples of processed foods include:

  • commercial baked goods (cakes, pies, pastries, cookies)
  • chips and crackers
  • processed meats (hot dogs, lunch meat, sausage)
  • sugar-sweetened beverages
  • boxed rice or pasta dishes
  • pre-packaged microwaveable meals
  • white bread, white rice
  • flavored yogurts, ice cream

Eating too much processed food and not enough whole foods can be harmful to your health. That’s because you won’t be getting enough of the nutrients your body needs. Instead, you’ll be eating higher amounts of sugar, salt, unhealthy fats, or other ingredients that don’t provide much nutritional value.

According to scientific research, poor nutrition can increase your risk of:

  • weight gain and obesity
  • heart disease and stroke
  • type 2 diabetes
  • some types of cancer , including uterine cancer , breast cancer in postmenopausal women, and colorectal cancer

3. If you smoke, try to quit

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. According to the CDC, tobacco use accounts for nearly 1 in 5 deaths in the U.S. each year. In fact, it’s estimated that smokers, on average, die about 10 years earlier than nonsmokers.

Smoking can damage nearly every organ in your body and significantly increases your risk of:

  • Heart disease: According to scientific evidence , tobacco is the leading cause of premature death from cardiovascular disease.
  • Stroke: Smoking damages your blood vessels, making them stiffer and narrower. This not only increases your risk of a heart attack but can put you at a higher risk of a stroke, too.
  • Respiratory diseases: The damage caused by smoking to the airways and air sacs in your lungs greatly increases your risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) .
  • Lung cancer and other cancers: Approximately 80% of lung cancers can be attributed to tobacco use. According to the American Cancer Society, smoking can also increase your risk of many other types of cancer, including cancer of the bladder , mouth, stomach, pancreas, and colon, among others.

What about e-cigarettes and hookah?

According to research , e-cigarettes contain a number of potentially toxic chemicals that can be harmful to your health.

A 2022 study found that the long-term use of e-cigarettes can cause damage to blood vessels, increasing the risk for cardiovascular disease. Long-term e-cigarette use was defined as vaping more than 5 times per week for more than 3 months.

Although hookah smoking is sometimes mistakenly considered to be a safer form of smoking, it actually poses many of the same risks as cigarette smoking.

If you smoke, quitting is the most important step you can take to improve your health, no matter your age or how long you’ve smoked. Quitting smoking can add years to your life, and the positive effects of quitting will continue to increase the longer you remain a nonsmoker.

Talk with your doctor about quitting. They can help set you up for success, and prescribe smoking cessation medications, if necessary, to help you quit nicotine for good.

4. Make sleep a priority

Sleep is vital for every process in your body. Sleep is a time for your body to repair cells and restore energy. Your brain also performs many essential functions while you’re sleeping, like storing information, removing waste, and strengthening nerve cell connections.

How much sleep you need depends on your age, but for most adults, the CDC recommends at least 7 or more hours of sleep each night. Children and older adults typically need more sleep.

If you don’t get enough sleep, your body will have a harder time working properly. Sleep deprivation can increase your risk of:

  • high blood pressure (hypertension)
  • cardiovascular disease
  • metabolic syndrome
  • anxiety, depression, mood changes
  • a weakened immune system
  • some types of cancer

So, how can you ensure you get enough sleep? Some things that may help include the following:

  • Create a quiet, dark, comfortable sleep environment: Use an eye mask or black-out curtains to block light, turn down the thermostat — a temperature between 60°F to 67°F (15.6°C to 9.4°C) — is best for sleeping, and make sure your mattress and pillows are comfortable. Use earplugs if you need to block out noise.
  • Avoid screen time before bed: Many electronic devices emit blue light that can keep your brain alert, making it harder to fall asleep. Turn off these devices at least an hour before you go to bed.
  • Create a relaxing bedtime routine: Instead of watching TV or working on a computer, do something to help you relax. Take a warm bath or shower, try gentle stretches , read a book (not an e-reader), or try meditation or breathing techniques .
  • Limit your caffeine, alcohol, and nicotine intake: Avoid drinking alcohol or smoking within 4 hours of going to bed as both substances can negatively impact your sleep. Limit your caffeine intake to the morning hours.
  • Try a natural sleep aid: If you find it difficult to switch your mind off at night, try a natural sleep aid like melatonin , valerian root , or glycine .

5. Stay hydrated

Drinking enough water each day is key to good health. Your body needs water for many important functions, like maintaining your body temperature, aiding digestion, keeping your organs working properly, and delivering nutrients to all your cells.

Staying hydrated also keeps your brain working well. When you don’t take in enough fluid, you may feel tired, have trouble concentrating or focusing, and experience headaches and mood changes.

How much water should you drink each day?

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends :

  • 9 cups of fluid per day for women
  • 13 cups of fluid per day for men

You’ll typically need to increase your water intake if you:

  • exercise or exert yourself
  • live in a hot, dry climate
  • spend time outdoors in the sun, especially in warmer weather
  • have a fever or lose fluids through vomiting or diarrhea
  • are pregnant, breastfeeding, or chestfeeding

Make water your go-to beverage. Avoid sodas and energy drinks which typically contain a lot of added sugars and extra calories.

To add some flavor to your water, try squeezing a lemon, lime, or orange and adding the juice to your water. You can also add a few cucumber slices, or try adding mint or basil leaves.

6. If you drink alcohol, do so responsibly

While an occasional alcoholic drink likely won’t affect your health, drinking too much alcohol can take a heavy toll on many of your organs.

Overconsumption of alcohol can damage your liver, brain, and heart, and also increase the risk of several types of cancer, including breast , colorectal, and liver cancer. Heavy drinking can also negatively impact your mental health.

So, at what point does drinking become harmful to your health? According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, moderate drinking is classified as:

  • up to 1 standard drink per day for women
  • up to 2 standard drinks per day for men

What’s a standard drink?

A standard drink is considered to be:

  • 12 ounces (355 mL) of regular beer, or
  • 5 ounces (150 mL) of wine, or
  • 1.5 ounces (45 mL) of spirit

7. Make preventive care a priority

Preventive care is the care you get from your doctor to stay healthy. While you may typically think of your doctor as the person you see when you’re ill, your doctor also plays a key role in keeping you healthy and preventing you from getting sick or developing a chronic disease in the first place.

By being proactive and focusing on preventive care, you and your doctor are more likely to catch early warning signs of certain diseases before they become more serious. You can then take steps to address these issues when they’re easier to treat and the outcomes are more likely to be positive.

When you make an appointment to visit your doctor for an annual checkup, it may include:

  • measurement of blood pressure and other heart health indicators
  • blood tests for cholesterol and blood glucose
  • depression screening
  • obesity screening
  • vaccinations
  • a Pap smear

Depending on your age, family history, and other factors, your doctor may also order specific screenings, such as:

  • a mammogram , a screening for breast cancer
  • a colonoscopy , a screening for colorectal cancer
  • osteoporosis screening
  • genetic testing for some types of cancer
  • tests for some sexually transmitted diseases

8. Know your numbers

One of the advantages of preventive care is that your doctor will screen you for several key measurements, including your:

  • body mass index (BMI)
  • blood pressure (hypertension)
  • cholesterol and triglycerides
  • fasting blood glucose

If any of these numbers are outside the recommended range, you and your doctor can discuss what needs to be done to address this issue. Your doctor can put together a treatment plan that’s right for you and will monitor you to ensure your numbers are moving in the right direction.

Being aware of issues related to these key metrics early on, before they cause other problems, can help you make the right lifestyle changes to improve important aspects of your health. In many cases, health conditions like hypertension or high cholesterol may not cause any symptoms until later on, when more serious — possibly life threatening issues — start to arise.

If lifestyle changes don’t help enough, your doctor may decide to prescribe medications to help reduce the risk of potential complications.

9. Manage stress in a healthy way

Stress is a normal part of everyday life and, when it’s short-lived, it can be useful. But, chronic stress can affect you mentally, physically, and emotionally. Research has shown that high levels of ongoing stress have been associated with an increased risk of :

  • high blood pressure

Although stress is often unavoidable, you do have a choice in how you handle it. Just as your body has a stress response, it also has a relaxation response , which is characterized by lower blood pressure, slower breathing, and a reduced heart rate.

Some types of activities that may help bring about a relaxation response involve:

  • Breathing exercises: A technique called diaphragmatic breathing has been shown to help lower stress hormones, reduce blood pressure, and regulate other bodily processes.
  • Progressive muscle relaxation: Progressive muscle relaxation is a technique where you tighten and then relax each muscle group in your body, one at a time, in a specific pattern.
  • Exercising: Physical activity releases endorphins in your brain, one of the feel-good hormones . These chemicals can help relieve pain and also reduce stress and boost your mood.
  • Being creative: According to research , creative arts like drawing, painting, coloring, writing, dancing, and listening to or playing music have the ability to boost your mood and ease stress and anxiety.
  • Yoga or tai chi: The slow, mindful movements and stretches that are part of yoga and tai chi help relieve muscle tension while encouraging mental and physical relaxation.
  • Meditation : Mindfulness meditation may help reduce the inflammatory response caused by the stress hormone, cortisol .

10. Practice safe sex

If you’re sexually active or have been in the past, it’s important that you’re proactive about getting screened for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) .

Some sexually transmitted diseases don’t cause noticeable symptoms until weeks, months, or possibly even years later. By then, you may have passed it on to someone else. And, it may also be harder to treat the disease when it’s not caught early. That’s why it’s important to get tested often.

Communication is key when it comes to safe sex. Talk openly with your partner about your sexual past and any STI diagnosis you’ve had. Before having sex with a new partner, consider getting tested for STIs, along with your partner, and discuss your barrier method preferences.

To reduce the risk of contracting HIV , you may want to consider:

  • pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) , available as the brand name pills Truvada and Descovy, this antiretroviral medication is taken before possible HIV exposure
  • post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is a medication that can be taken after possible HIV exposure

You can also reduce your risk of some other STIs by getting vaccinated against:

  • human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • hepatitis A
  • hepatitis B (HBV)

Your health plays a crucial role in how you feel and live each day. If you’re stressed, tired, or not feeling well, it’s not easy to be the best version of yourself and to give those around you the time and attention they need.

In order to thrive and lower your risk of chronic disease and illness, there are many choices you can make today and every day to give yourself the best shot at living a long, active, and healthful life.

The Importance of Healthy Lifestyle: Essay Example

  • Introduction

Embracing physical Activity

Quitting smoking, risks associated with smoking, reference list.

In this essay on the importance of healthy lifestyle, you’ll learn more about the benefits of physical activity, quitting smoking, and other aspect of the importance of healthy lifestyle.

The Importance of Healthy Lifestyle: Essay Introduction

A healthy lifestyle is a term that is commonly used by many communication channels but not many people bother to find out its real meaning. It is important to know its significance and ways through which individuals can make lifestyle changes since this can lead to an improvement in the length and the quality of the lives they live.

Several factors make up a healthy lifestyle, physical exercise and diet being the most obvious ones (Gogus, 2011). In addition, learning how to manage stress, getting enough sleep, avoiding smoking and responsible drinking are important towards living a healthy lifestyle.

Parents who make a deliberate effort to live healthy lifestyles make it possible for their children to lead healthy lifestyles too.

There are problems associated with unhealthy lifestyles hence it is mportant for parents to lead by example by educating their children on how to live well, improve their eating habits and the need for exercises (Manger, 2006). In order to lead a healthy lifestyle, I will make two important lifestyle changes that will have positive impact on my short term and long term health.

The first lifestyle change that I will make is to embrace increased physical activity. Regular activity and exercises are important to people of all ages since they maintain good health and well being. Research has revealed that both young and old people can reap numerous benefits from either vigorous or moderate exercises done regularly. Many people struggle with chronic diseases but with exercises, they can be improved significantly.

Active people are likely to live longer than inactive ones since through exercises, they reduce the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes and heart diseases.

Despite the fact that majority of people are aware of the benefits associated with physical exercises, they nevertheless lead lives which are relatively sedentary. Sedentary lifestyles are described as lifestyles that are devoid of physical activities carried out during leisure time. Lack of physical activity has been cited as common in both young and old people.

One of the most common health problems that have been claiming many lives across the world is obesity. Physical exercise is important in regulating weight to ensure that it is maintained at a healthy level. It helps an individual to burn calories and the more vigorous the activity is, the higher the amount of calories burnt. This eliminates the problem of wasting a lot of time in an attempt to lose a lot of weight.

This implies that it is important for individuals to monitor their weight. Nutritious diets coupled with physical activity are key ways through which individuals can maintain a healthy weight. It is therefore important for private and public sectors to come together to encourage individuals to embrace physical activity.

For example, schools can initiate walking programs and involve the local communities. As an individual, I need to embrace physical activity since it is good for the body and mind. This should be followed by a constantly active lifestyle.

Lack of physical activity is also associated with increased treatment costs which can be avoided. Physical activity should be done for at least twenty minutes, three times in every week in order to strengthen muscles, improve the structure of the joints and bone health.

As a student, physical activity will be very important since it has a positive impact on mental health. It is associated with increased learning capacity, self esteem and reduction in anxiety and stress. Physical activity is therefore important towards reducing some of the health risks such as obesity which is occasioned by excess weight (Whitman, 2012).

The second lifestyle change that I will make is to quit smoking. This is an addictive habit that is not considered harmful by many people but has adverse health effects. There are more than four hundred known substances in cigarettes which are toxic and harmful to human health. During the burning process, the butt has the highest concentration of the residues.

Some of the most harmful products in cigarettes include tar which leads to cancer, carbon monoxide which is associated with reduced oxygen in the body and nicotine which is addictive and raises the level of cholestrol in the body. The health damage that is associated with smoking is determined by presence or absence of a filter in the cigarette, the process of preparing the tobacco and the quantity of smoked cigarettes.

Researchers have found out that smoking can reduce the life expectancy of an individual by seven or eight years. It is estimated that the life of a smoker is shortened by eleven minutes for every cigarette smoked. For instance, in UK, three hundred people lose their lives on a daily basis as a result of smoking with the highest percentage being young smokers.

It is also evident that more people under seventy years die of diseases related to smoking than those who die of traffic accidents, AIDS and breast cancer. In addition, people who do not smoke live healthier during their old age than those who smoke.

Failure to quit smoking is associated with numerous health risks. Several diseases which pose great risks to the health of a smoker include cardiovascular disease, cancer and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Cardiovascular disease occurs when arteries harden as a result of deposits of cholestrol and other fats that block the arteries making them narrow (Health Effects of Cigarette Smoking, 2012).

The disease takes different forms since different blood vessels may be affected. Smoking also exposes individuals to cancer especially throat cancer, lung cancer and mouth cancer. These types of cancer are not common among non-smokers.

The risk of cancer is increased by the number of cigarettes smoked in a day and the duration an individual has been smoking. The likelihood of smokers developing mouth cancer is four times compared to non-smokers. COPD on the other hand entails numerous conditions that obstruct the flow of air hence making breathing difficult. They include chronic bronchitis and emphysema (Owing, 2005).

Quitting smoking will be beneficial to me as an individual since it will reduce the risk of contracting smoking-related diseases. In addition, my general health will improve since minor health problems such as tiredness and headache may be associated with smoking.

The heart will also not be exposed to a lot of strain hence enabling it to work effectively. Most significantly, smoking will cut down the amount of money that would otherwise be spent on drugs (Sloan, 2004).

When coupled with the benefits of physical activity, the actions towards lifestyle change will be beneficial towards my university work and my chances of success in employment. This is because good health will enable me to concentrate on my studies without distractions caused by diseases. I will also be able to effectively execute my duties at the place of work.

essay on healthy lifestyle

Writing an essay on living a healthy lifestyle? Whether it's on the ways to live healthily or the importance of the lifestyle, this topic is a common one in exams and assignments.

Since this is a well-loved topic in IGCSE and SPM English essay exams, you really want to find a way to make your essay interesting. That’s why we’ve rounded up our four top tips to help your essay stand out.

Healthy Lifestyle Essay Tip #1: Start With An Inviting Intro

Most students will begin with the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. But to immediately grab your reader’s attention, why not begin with a question:

What does healthy living look like in the 21st century?

To take it to the next level, you could then follow up with some interesting statistics on healthy living. Here are a few for you to include:

65% of Malaysians are practising healthier lifestyles since the pandemic

Almost a quarter of the world considers themselves unhealthy

Only 56% of people think their health is excellent or very good

To conclude your intro, you can set up the rest of your essay for success by saying something different, like this:

While eating well and exercising are important for a healthy lifestyle, there are other habits that we need to practise in the 21st century.

Healthy Lifestyle Essay Tip #2: Introduce Fresh, New Ideas To A Familiar Topic

The body of your essay – where your main points live – is arguably the most important part of your essay. This is your opportunity to shine .

Given the two most common SPM English essay questions are on the ways to live healthily and the importance of healthy living, we’ve outlined a few ideas below for both.

Essay Question #1: How To Live A Healthy Lifestyle

Often, students will highlight diets, exercise, and sleep as their main points. While these points are important to leading a healthy lifestyle, you could also choose 1 - 2 main points below to spice up your essay:

Schedule breaks from screens

Spend time out in nature and in the sun

Make time for your loved ones

Practise time-outs from technology

Do the things you love

Increase daily steps

Try meditating

Schedule regular check-ups for your teeth and eyes

One important thing to highlight here is that while this essay question has been around for years, your essay doesn’t have to follow the same, tired response.

Given our lives are so digital today – with online shopping and social networking sites – your essay can take a modern approach to healthy living.

Essay Question #2: The Importance Of Living A Healthy Lifestyle

With this essay question, it’s slightly more difficult to highlight refreshing, new ideas. But fret not, we’ve found a few for you to include:

Protects your mental health

Live longer

Helps you save money (eating junk food, smoking, and drinking sugary drinks are expensive habits)

Fewer health issues and medical expenses

Builds your self-esteem and confidence

Increases your energy and productivity

Healthy Lifestyle Essay Tip #3: Expand On Your Ideas

Now, time to get writing! This step will involve fleshing out your ideas to convince the reader of your point.

To do so, it helps to follow the PEEC format for essay writing . Here’s an example of how to build out an idea:

Point : A healthy lifestyle is important to help build your self-esteem and confidence.

Explanation : By looking after your physical and mental health, you’ll look and feel better.

Example: For example, people with good self-esteem are more mentally prepared to deal with challenges and are less likely to pick up unhealthy habits.

Conclusion: Even though it’s important, most people don’t know the major role emotional well-being plays in their lives.

And if you’d like to add a bit of colour to your essays, you could also include a few idioms as you’re building out your body paragraphs!

Healthy Lifestyle Essay Tip #4: End Positively & Confidently

The finish line is in sight and it’s time to make a good final impression! Your conclusion should suggest to your reader that you have accomplished what you set out to prove in your intro.

Here’s what you should include:

Rephrase the final sentence in your first paragraph, i.e. the purpose of your essay

Summarise the main points of your essay in one sentence

End positively to make your reader feel they have learned something

For example, say your essay is on how to live a healthy lifestyle with the introduction outlined in Tip #1 and these main points: schedule breaks from screens, spend time in nature, and do the things you love. This is how you could conclude:

Rephrase : There are many ways to live a healthy life beyond the basics of eating, sleeping, and exercising correctly.

Summarise: By scheduling time away from technology, surrounding yourself with nature and making time for your hobbies, you’ll definitely feel happier and healthier.

End Positively: It’s never too late to change your lifestyle to truly enjoy the benefits of healthy living.

As you can see in our example, we’ve reworded key points and sentences previously used. By following this format, you can conclude with confidence every time.

4. Limit alcohol consumption: Drinking alcohol in moderation has some health benefits, but it’s important to limit your intake to no more than two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women.

5. Get regular checkups: Regular medical checkups are an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. These checkups can help catch problems early, when they’re most treatable.

Eating Habits for a Healthy Lifestyle

There are many small changes that you can make to your diet that will collectively lead to a healthier lifestyle. Here are some tips for eating habits that can help you live a healthier life:

1. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are packed with nutrients that are essential for good health. Aim to fill half of your plate with fruits and vegetables at each meal.

2. Choose whole grain foods. Whole grain foods contain more fiber than refined grains and can help improve cholesterol levels, blood sugar control, and digestion.

3. Limit saturated and trans fats. Saturated and trans fats can increase your risk of heart disease and stroke. Choose leaner protein sources such as chicken or fish, and cook with healthy oils such as olive oil or canola oil.

4. Reduce sodium intake. Too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure, which increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Choose fresh or frozen foods over processed foods, and limit your use of salt when cooking at home.

5. Drink plenty of water. Water is essential for good health, yet many people don’t drink enough each day.aim to drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day .

6. Limit sugar intake. Too much sugar can lead to weight gain and an increased risk of diabetes. Opt for healthier sweeteners such as honey or maple syrup, and watch your portion sizes when it comes to sugary snacks and desserts.

7. Eat breakfast every day. Eating a healthy breakfast can help jumpstart your metabolism, give you energy for the day, and provide important nutrients like fiber, protein, and vitamins and minerals.

8. Get enough sleep each night. Sleep is essential for good physical and mental health. Aim to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night to ensure that your body has enough time to rest and recharge.

Exercise and Physical Activities for a Healthy Lifestyle

There are many benefits to leading a healthy lifestyle, including maintaining a healthy weight, reducing your risk of developing chronic diseases, and improving your mental health. One of the best ways to achieve a healthy lifestyle is to make exercise and physical activity a part of your daily routine.

There are endless possibilities when it comes to choosing exercises and physical activities that fit your lifestyle. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

• Take a brisk walk or jog around your neighborhood.

• Join a local gym or fitness center and take advantage of the many workout options they offer.

• Get outside and go for a hike, bike ride, or swim in the pool or ocean.

• Invest in some at-home workout equipment like dumbbells, resistance bands, or an exercise bike.

Whatever exercises and physical activities you choose, be sure to focus on those that you enjoy and will stick with long-term. Consistency is key when it comes to reaping the benefits of exercise. And remember, even moderate amounts of physical activity can have positive effects on your health!

Mental Wellbeing for a Healthy Lifestyle

It is often said that healthy mind resides in a healthy body. This means that if you want to have a healthy lifestyle, you need to take care of your mental wellbeing as well. There are many ways to do this, but some of the most effective ones are listed below:

1. Get enough sleep: Most people need around eight hours of sleep per night. If you find it difficult to get this much sleep, try setting a regular bedtime and waking up at the same time each day. Avoid caffeine and alcohol before bedtime, as they can make it harder to fall asleep.

2. Eat healthy: Eating nutritious food helps your body to function at its best. Make sure to include plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your diet. Avoid processed foods and sugary drinks, which can lead to feelings of fatigue and low energy.

3. Exercise regularly: Exercise releases endorphins, which have mood-boosting effects. A moderate amount of exercise is the key to maintaining your mental health. Choose an activity that you enjoy and make time for it every day or week.

4. Connect with others: Spending time with loved ones or participating in activities with a group can help reduce stress and anxiety levels. If you don’t have close friends or family nearby, consider joining a club or volunteer organization.

5. Take breaks: When you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed, take a few minutes to yourself to relax and recharge. Listen to your favorite music, take a walk, or practice mindful breathing.

6. Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness is the practice of being aware of the present moment without judgment. It can help you to become more in tune with your emotions and recognize negative thought patterns before they spiral out of control.

With these tips, you can make sure that you’re taking care of your mental wellbeing and leading a healthy lifestyle.

Examples of People Who Live A Healthy Lifestyle

Some people may eat healthy diets and exercise regularly, while others may make sure to get enough sleep and avoid harmful substances. Some examples of people who live healthy lifestyles include:

• Vegetarians or vegans who consume plant-based diets rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

• Athletes who train their bodies to peak performance levels through intense physical activity and proper nutrition.

A Healthy Lifestyle: Why Is It Important? Research Paper

  • To find inspiration for your paper and overcome writer’s block
  • As a source of information (ensure proper referencing)
  • As a template for you assignment

Introduction

Start from the childhood.

Health habits adoption can protect people from severe physical health problems. They include healthy nutrition and regular physical activities and have positive “side effects” like loss of weight and increase of energy. Even minor health problems affect other life aspects, sometimes even overshadowing them (Scott, 2020). Still, there are many factors to be researched by an individual before starting his or her healthy lifestyle. Although it is a time-consuming and challenging process, commitment to healthy habits is a working tool for feeling better and avoiding stress.

There are several basic ways to start forming a child’s healthy lifestyle. Everyday activity is one of the primer ones, as, in the current era of technologies, it is complicated to limit the time spent in front of different gadgets or TV. Nevertheless, healthy growth and development are impossible without being active. Children and teenagers should get at least an hour of daily physical activities, including vigorous ones.

Choosing water as a drink instead of any sweetened drinks like soft drinks or fruit juices is another crucial factor. The whole fruit is always more beneficial than the fruit juice for a child’s health and well-being. Reduced-fat milk is one of the best sources of calcium. Eating more vegetables and fruits is essential for children and youth. Moreover, they might be healthy snacks instead of chips, hamburgers, and other meals of doubtful benefit. It is highly recommended to include fruit and vegetables into the daily ratio to prevent the risk of a variety of chronic diseases.

The Importance of Breakfast

There are valid advantages of eating in the morning, according to scientists. The benefits of starting one’s day with a full meal start from decreasing BMI. Numerous researches proved that missing the morning meal leads to being overweight (“Why breakfast,” n.d.). Moreover, breakfast leads to a decrease in fat consumption during the day. Breakfast should include some fruit and vegetables to meet the demands of their daily norm. This meal is highly essential for the increase of daily calcium and fiber intake. Additionally, breakfast affects daily performance, improves attention and memory, primarily related to school-aged children. It is noteworthy that there is an established interrelation between skipping breakfast and gaining risky behaviors like alcohol and drug abuse or smoking.

The Role of Carbs

During the process of digestion, carbohydrates are converted into sugar or glucose in the body. In turn, glucose is an essential source of fuel for people. It is crucial for the brain, which may not be substituted by protein or fat for its normal functioning. There are two types of carbs – simple and complex. Simple carbs may be contained in table sugar, fruit juice and fruit, dairy products, and sugar. Complex carbs may be found in grain products like pasta, bread, rice, and crackers. They are also present in sweet potato, corn, white potato, peas, and butternut. People should not wholly exclude carbs from their ration, as they are an essential part of a healthy diet. It is healthier to pick carbs bursting with minerals, vitamins, fiber, and protein. All carbs are transformed into glucose and, therefore, increase blood sugar. Those with fiber, such as apples, beans, 100% whole-wheat bread, and broccoli, take more time to be digested and, hence, release glucose into the blood slower (“Carbohydrates ,” 2015). Blood glucose plays a vital role in the control of weight and diabetes.

Protein Issue

As people get older, protein is becoming more crucial for preserving strength and muscle mass. Additionally, rational protein consumption is obligatory to prevent malnutrition. Some people advocate for a high protein diet to speed up metabolism and facilitate weight loss, although success in this regard varies greatly. There is also no accurately established norm of daily protein consumption. Commonly, men are believed to need 56 g/day, while women – 46 g/day (“When it comes to protein,” n.d.). Nevertheless, sportspeople eager to gain muscle mass need many more.

There is an averaged formula for counting the daily norm of a protein called RDA (recommended daily allowance), which is 0,8 grams per kg of the body (“When it comes to protein,” n.d.). Therefore, the daily norm may extensively differ dependent on the weight of a separately taken individual. If counted based on calorie percentage, protein should occupy not less than 10% of daily consumed calories in total (“When it comes to protein,” n.d.). It is also imperative to take into account the type of protein obtained from different meals. For instance, one should prefer consuming yogurt, salmon, or beans instead of red meat for healthier benefits.

What Exactly Coconut Oil Is

The popularity of coconut oil soared immensely during recent years due to the touted health benefits. Coconut oil has become a trend, fueled by celebrities. They state that the oil can control appetite blasting away belly fat, improve immunity, prevent heart and vascular diseases, stave off Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia. It is noteworthy that over 70% of Americans rate coconut oil as a healthy product. Still, there is only about 35% of scientists and nutrition experts hold the same view (“Coconut oil,” n.d.). Several trending diets include coconut oil like Paleo and ketogenic diets. Indeed, this oil is free of fiber and cholesterol, but simultaneously it contains only traces of plant sterols, minerals, and vitamins. Plant sterols mimic blood cholesterol, therefore, blocking its absorption by the body. Nevertheless, its amount in coconut oil is too small to produce a considerable effect.

The Ways to Handle Sugar Cravings

For handling sugar cravings, it is obligatory to have the tests of cortisol and melatonin fluctuations on hands. If the tests are normal, one should shift to recognizing bad habits. There is a secure method to start a healthy practice. For instance, when one feels craving: replace pastry with a glass of water or several jumping jacks. Incorporating more fats and proteins into the diet also helps to handle the needs. Avoiding snacks that contain all carbohydrates is also a reasonable move. There are also several food supplements useful for treating sugar cravings. For instance, they are highly absorbable forms of calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, and chromium supplements.

Sugar cravings might be a result of insufficient sleep or sleep of low quality. Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day can solve the problem of sugar carvings. Sugar is the source of serotonin, but not the only one. Green tea, cheese, eggs, and walnuts are sugar’s worthy rivals in this regard. Additionally, an increase in physical activity and exercise routine can increase one’s serotonin level significantly.

Cleanse Diets

Cleanse diets are usually short-term; therefore, they are not necessarily harmful. Nevertheless, their promised effects are very overpriced. Today, scientists did not provide people with convincing evidence proving the cleansing diets health claims. Moreover, there are specific side effects that can be caused by the cleanse diets, while some of them might be harmful. These warnings and the evidence do not stop the popularity of cleansing diets, partially due to their promotion by celebrities.

In the vast majority of cases, these diets make their followers feel hungry and even deprived. There are also several categories of risk when it comes to cleansing diets, including pregnant women and nursing mothers. Certain health conditions are also contradictory for cleansing diets: kidney diseases, diabetes, liver diseases, and any other chronic conditions. Before keeping on a cleansing diet, one should necessarily consult with a health professional.

Exercising Frequency

The recommendations of the Department of Health and Human Services are as follows: the weekly norm of aerobic activity should reach at least 150 minutes. As an alternative, one can have 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise like aerobic dancing and running instead (Laskowski, n.d.). The course should be spread equally throughout the week, even if one gets a more significant physical load. If an individual is involved in strength training, all groups of muscles should be trained at least twice a week. In turn, adherents of moderate activity should pay attention to swimming, brisk walking, and mowing the lawn. Strength training might include the use of one’s body weight, weight machines, resistant exercises, or, for instance, rock climbing. For losing weight, more exercising and fitness goals are needed and should include around 300 minutes a week (Laskowski, n.d.).

Options for People Hating Exercising

Under the modern rhythm of life, sometimes people run out of time for exercising. There are still several ways to make one’s lifestyle healthier. One can start by reducing sitting time, as its impact on the metabolic processes is crucial. Therefore, sitting for a long time negatively affects both one’s health and longevity. Any activity is useful: a few short walks daily might substitute the recommended half an hour continuous walk.

Sleep mode adjustment is obligatory for a healthy lifestyle either as it affects not only brain activity but also one’s weight. Lessening stress plays a vital role as stress can destruct any system of one’s body. Another part of a healthy lifestyle is a sufficient amount of time spent on rest from working. Vacations with zero access to work, including messaging once in six months, should be an integral part of people’s life. People caring about their lifestyle and hating exercising should at least refine their diets. It means fewer snacks and more fruit, vegetables, and pure water. Finally, people might dislike physical activity like a workout, running, and others. Nevertheless, there are still other options with the same health benefit as yoga, Zumba, or even cycling with friends.

Counting Calories

Consuming fewer calories than burning helps lose weight, although, from the health point of view, calories might differ. People should distinguish between concepts of calories quantity and nutritional quality, having a different impact on their health. Different foods affect people’s appetite, hormone levels, metabolic processes, and hunger in different ways. For example, 100 calories received from apples diminish appetite more efficiently than the same quantity from donuts (“Counting calories,” n.d.). Hence, eating donuts puts you at the risk of overeating during the day, so the calorie deficit is under threat. Whereas from the biological point of view, loss of weight requires a calorie deficit.

Yet, there is evidence that the quality of food is more important than its quantity. For instance, examining two groups receiving an equal amount of calories but keeping on different diets (high-carb and low-carb), the results will differ. Those keeping on a low-carb diet can lose more weight even if they get a higher amount of calories. Moreover, by restricting calories, people should add physical activities to get better results and keep their bodies tight and elastic.

Vegan Diet Peculiarities

The popularity of vegan diets is grounded by the various health benefits like the decrease of heart disease, cancer, and diabetes risk. Nevertheless, being a vegan, it is essential not to rely on processed foods containing much sugar, sodium, and fat. Moreover, vegans tend to neglect vegetables, fruits, calcium-rich foods, and whole grains, missing the nutrients these foods provide. However, a well-planned and balanced vegan diet is appropriate for everyone, including children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers. A vegan diet should rely on plant-based foods, including those mentioned above plus nuts and legumes. If one has any doubt about whether his or her vegan diet is well-balanced, it is appropriate to approach a registered dietitian to create the right vegetarian plan.

Soy: Friend or Foe

Soy is consumed as a part of many processed foods and a source of protein. Nevertheless, it is quite a controversial product, as there is no general opinion regarding its benefits and harms for health. The myth that soy can prevent the risks of heart disease is debunked, but it does not hurt the heart either has many other health benefits either. It contains a lot of fiber; it is high in vitamins, polyunsaturated fats, and minerals, while the quantity of saturated fat is low. Moreover, some soy products, such as edamame and tofu, can replace animal sources like red meat. The issue with soy foods is that some of them have estrogen-like chemicals in their structure, and, therefore, their effect might be adverse (“Confused about eating soy?” 2018). Hence, products like nutrition bars and protein powders containing soy protein isolate or textured vegetable protein should be avoided. Whereas soy milk, tofu, edamame, and other whole soy foods may be consumed in moderation, for instance, twice a week.

Lifestyle and Mental Health

Mental and physical health should not be considered separate, although people often make a distinction between body and mind. Bad physical fitness increases the risk of psychiatric diseases development and many other conditions. It is irrational to rely only on medical therapy in case there are already some problems with mental health. Taking care of a physical state is essential and should never be neglected. Moreover, a healthy lifestyle makes people more resistant to stress risks (Scott, 2019). At the same time, there is scientific evidence that high levels of stress lead to depression, which, in turn, is highly associated with coronary heart disease.

Additionally, a healthy lifestyle makes people more friendly, so they avoid stress connected with loneliness and a feeling of needlessness. Vice versa, bad habits significantly increase the risk of mental diseases. For example, nicotine interacts with brains, particularly, with its chemicals like dopamine. Dopamine is responsible for positive feelings, so depression is often connected with its lack. Initially, nicotine increases dopamine levels, simultaneously blocking the brain’s ability to make chemicals (“Physical health,” n.d.). That is the reason why they need for nicotine’s level to increase rises with the flow of time.

Healthy habits like excellent and balanced nutrition, avoiding harmful substances, exercising, and others make sense. Any behavior is benefits emotional, physical, and mental health can be considered a healthy habit (Wilson, 2016). It is challenging to develop a healthy lifestyle, whereas adhering, is even more complicated. Nevertheless, any sacrifices made on this path are worthy due to the long-term positive impact on health regardless of one’s physical ability, sex, age, and other factors.

Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle Essay

Wealth matters, but, is not as important as health. Money is the source to carry on with a healthy life however good health is the source of living a happy and peaceful life.

So, everyone should take many precautions in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Everyone should be away from bad habits and unhealthy lifestyles.

Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle Essay

Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle Essay (550+ Words)

The greatest wealth is our own health. In today’s fast-paced world, where the pursuit of material wealth often takes precedence, it is crucial to recognize that the greatest wealth we possess is our own health. While a healthy body can contribute to financial success, the reverse is not true—an affluent individual cannot easily attain good health. The demands of modern life and the accompanying stress have been linked to various medical conditions, particularly heart and neurological problems. Therefore, adopting a healthy lifestyle becomes paramount, as a healthy lifestyle assists an individual to keep a positive attitude toward work and life in general.

One of the fundamental pillars of a healthy lifestyle is a balanced diet that supports overall well-being. A nutritious diet consists of essential components such as liquids, proteins, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, and calories. We must eat fresh fruits, vegetables, salads, dairy products, and other wholesome foods at regular intervals. Additionally, meals should be consumed at fixed times, in appropriate quantities, and should consist of well-cooked and hygienic ingredients. Avoiding fried and fatty foods, excessive spices, and roadside eating helps minimize potential health risks. Maintaining a sufficient gap between meals allows for proper digestion.

Physical activity is another integral aspect of a healthy lifestyle. Engaging in regular exercise and incorporating daily physical activities contribute to overall fitness. Alongside exercise, adequate rest and sleep are essential for rejuvenation . A clean and healthy environment, fresh air, access to clean water, personal hygiene, and drinking an ample amount of water—approximately 7-8 glasses per day—further support good health. These practices help regulate blood pressure, supply vital nutrients efficiently, and enhance the body’s immunity against infections and diseases.

The importance of health over wealth should not be underestimated. Splurging on indulgences like junk food or entertainment might provide temporary satisfaction but offers no real advantage. Being physically and mentally healthy helps an individual to be socially and financially healthy as well. A healthy person possesses greater vitality, energy, and efficiency, while an affluent yet unhealthy individual easily succumbs to fatigue and loses out on life’s true wealth—health.

Daily Test - Attempt Now

A healthy individual can achieve financial success due to their motivation, interest, and higher levels of concentration. While money facilitates a healthy lifestyle, it is good health that truly allows for a happy and peaceful existence. Therefore, it is imperative for everyone to prioritize a healthy lifestyle, steering clear of bad habits and unhealthy choices.

By nurturing both physical and mental health, individuals can excel in their personal and professional lives, regardless of their chosen vocation. The significance of maintaining good health cannot be overstated. Being healthy isn’t only the condition of being free of disease, ailment, or injury but also being happy physically, mentally, socially, intellectually, and financially. Good health is not only a prerequisite for a contented life but also nature’s most precious gift.

In conclusion, the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle should take precedence in our lives. While material wealth may hold importance, it pales in comparison to the invaluable asset of good health. By prioritizing nutritious diets, regular exercise, sufficient rest, and adopting healthy habits, individuals can enhance their overall well-being, leading to a happier and more fulfilling existence.

A healthy lifestyle late in life still offers benefits

Even late in life, following healthy habits can help people live longer, suggests a study published online June 20, 2024, by JAMA Network Open . Researchers examined the lifestyles of 5,222 people aged 80 and older. They then looked at who in the group reached age 100 (centenarians) and who did not. The team ranked each person's lifestyle on a scale from zero to 6, with higher scores suggesting healthier behaviors. The scores were calculated based on habits such as diet diversity, regular exercise, smoking, alcohol consumption, and body mass index (BMI). The participants who scored between 5 and 6 lived the longest, on average, and were most likely to become centenarians. Those who scored between zero and 2 lived the shortest time.

According to the researchers, three of the lifestyle habits had the most impact on longevity: diet, exercise, and not smoking. Centenarians consumed the greatest amounts of fruits, vegetables, fish, beans, and tea. They also engaged in regular exercise, such as running and practicing qi gong, and never smoked. (Alcohol consumption and BMI didn't affect whether someone lived to 100.)

It's important to note that the results only showed an association and did not account for people's lifestyles when they were younger. However, they do suggest that continuing healthy habits even at an advanced age might offer life-prolonging benefits.

August's Social Security payments are on their way. Here's when you'll get yours.

The last round of Social Security checks for August will be headed to recipients in just a few days. This month's payment schedule was slightly different than typical, but next week's check should be sent at the standard time. Below is the full schedule so you can know when to expect yours. If you're still waiting on your check from July, check out  why it may not have arrived and what you can do about it .

While The Social Security Administration sends out checks monthly and your check will arrive at the same time every month, not everyone gets their checks on the same day.

Instead, Social Security checks are scheduled based on date of the month you were born and when you started receiving benefits.

Smart Money Advice on the Topics That Matter to You

Social security payment schedule august 2024.

How is the Social Security payment date determined?

Social Security payments are typically paid out starting on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. The remaining two payments will be paid out on the following two Wednesdays of the month. Which week you receive your payment depends on your birthdate. There is one big exception, which I'll cover below.

August 2
If your birthday falls between the 1st and 10th of any given month August 14
If your birthday falls between the 11th and 20th of any given month August 21
If your birthday falls between the 21st and 31st of any given month August 28

Will I receive my other government benefits on the same day?

If you've received Social Security benefits before May 1997, or receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income, your payment schedule isn't determined by your birthdate. Instead, payments are paid out every month on the same date with a couple of exceptions that I'll explain below.

Social Security payments will be sent out on the 3rd of each month, while SSI payments are sent out on the 1st of each month. These dates will sometimes change if the 1st or the 3rd of the month falls on a weekend or holiday. For instance, March 3 fell on a weekend, so Social Security recipients received their March payments two days early, on March 1. The same will happen in the month of November.

Is it OK to lie to your friends to make them arrive on time? Why one TikTok went wild

essay ways to have a healthy lifestyle

Everyone has that friend . The one who shows up 45 minutes late to dinner. The one who "lost track of time " before the big birthday party. The one who says they're on their way to the bar and hasn't left the house yet.

So is it ethical to tell them a different meeting time than everyone else? The question recently lit up TikTok comments after a user posted about showing up 22 minutes early to a dinner reservation – only to learn that her friends made the reservation for 30 minutes later than they told her. One commenter understood where she was coming from: "I’m habitually late to everything. My friends know it’s a flaw and love me anyway. Glad you have good friends too!!" Others were less kind: "No literally like, it’s just a sign of basic respect to your friends to be on time if you plan something together, it’s not that hard."

Etiquette and ethics professionals say communication is the best way to address friend groups with different standards and understandings of timeliness, especially as the definition of "on time" varies between cultures.

"Communicate expectations early and remain adaptable, knowing that what may seem late to you could be right on time for someone else," says etiquette expert Lisa Grotts .

People have different definitions of 'on time'

Maybe you grew up in a household that always showed up 15 minutes early to everything. Or maybe 7 p.m. always meant 8 p.m. Either way, when you become an adult and start organizing plans for yourself, you're bound to encounter some friction.

If you keep showing up late, that could send an unintentional message. "When you are late, it says that your time is more important than everybody else’s," Grotts adds. "It’s not. If this type of behavior continues, you might find yourself off the party guest list."

Then again, if you're planning the party and expecting people to show up hours late, someone arriving on time might be just as rude.

Is it time? When you 'stop running from it' and know you’ve outgrown your friend group

'It is best to avoid lying'

But is it actually acceptable to deceive friends so they arrive when you want? Maybe. And maybe not.

"Consider whether any of the friends would be upset if they found out that the dinner party planner had communicated differently to each person," says Taya Cohen , professor of organizational behavior and business ethics at Carnegie Mellon University. When thinking in terms of ethics , intention is key to determine whether a choice was right or wrong (or somewhere in between).

That said, "it is best to avoid lying," says Brad Fulton , associate professor of management and social policy at the Indiana University – Bloomington. "Mainly because lies often beget more lies." Straight-up confronting could cause even more of a headache, though: "If a person confronts a friend about their chromic tardiness, the friend might accuse the person of being controlling, citing that being on time is a cultural value not a universal value."

Oh? A TikToker went viral for blaming being late to work on 'time blindness.' Is it a real thing?

'Endure the awkwardness'

If you're still stuck on what to do, consider these tips.

  • Ask for their help before the event starts, or mention something vital happening right away. Maybe say "you are planning something special for the beginning and it’s important that everyone be there by a specific time," Fulton suggests. Asking for their help, too, may "make them feel valued," Grotts says.
  • Start on time even if the guest hasn't arrived. "It’s not exactly a subtle message, but it’s definitely a nonverbal queue that the party will go on without them," Grotts says.
  • Create incentives for those who get there on time. "For everyone who does arrive on time, give them a reward," says psychologist  Reneé Carr . "This could be a special drink, a tasty treat or bonus points if you are having game night. Make sure that there is a cut-off time and a limited amount of these 'rewards' so that it anyone who is late will regret not being on time."
  • Be patient . Remember that everyone comes from different backgrounds. No one's way is correct or incorrect. "If this is a friendship you value, try to avoid getting upset with the person," Carr adds. "They might not be used to anyone holding them accountable, being punctual or may lack awareness of social etiquette ."
  • Just go ahead and tell them an earlier start time – but tread carefully. It might just be easier for everyone's sake. But this too could backfire. Fulton says: "If a person does decide to give their perpetually late friend an earlier start time, they need to be willing to endure the awkwardness if the friend actually shows up on time."

Russian Attitudes About Putin Might Be Shifting

Negative remarks on social media have increased since Ukrainian troops launched an incursion, according to a firm that tracks Russian attitudes.

A statue with part of its head blown off stands in front of a damaged building.

By Julian E. Barnes

Reporting from Washington

Negative feelings about President Vladimir V. Putin have appeared to increase across Russia since Ukrainian troops pushed into Russian territory two weeks ago, according to a firm that tracks attitudes in the country by analyzing social media and other internet postings.

While news outlets in Russia have tried to put a more positive spin on the developments in the war, focusing on the Russian government’s humanitarian response, some Russian social media users have expressed discontent.

Many of the online postings, according to the analysis by FilterLabs AI , say Ukraine’s advance is a failure of the Russian government and, more specifically, Mr. Putin.

It is difficult to accurately gauge public opinion in Russia, or any other authoritarian country, because people responding to polls often give answers that they think the government wants. To address that shortcoming, FilterLabs tracks comments on social media sites, internet postings and news media sites, using a computer model to analyze sentiments expressed by ordinary Russians.

Positive attitudes about Mr. Putin took a hit last year after a short-lived armed rebellion led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of a Russian paramilitary force. But the shift in sentiment has appeared sharper in the days since Ukrainian troops launched their incursion into the Kursk region of western Russia.

“Putin’s response to the incursion was seen as inadequate at best and insulting at worst,” said Jonathan Teubner, the chief executive of FilterLabs.
