The Clinical Psychology Program at Duke University is a Ph.D. program for students seeking excellence in academic, scientific, and clinical training. This program is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) and by the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS). Our program has a strong history of scientist practitioner (Boulder) model and more recently has adopted a clinical science model of training in which the science of psychology and its clinical application are mutually interdependent and mutually evolving. That is, our program is designed to train clinical scientists who are capable of functioning successfully in academic, research, clinical, and community settings. Within this multifaceted training framework, we seek to develop students who are interested in careers in which the science of psychology is applied to address public health issues related to mental and physical diseases both nationally and internationally. The program is not appropriate for students interested solely in clinical practice and not in research. Rather, we strive for excellence in both the science and practice of clinical psychology.

At Duke, graduate training in clinical psychology emphasizes three domains of knowledge: adult clinical, child clinical, and health psychology. The expertise of the faculty, drawn from the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience and the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the Duke University Medical Center, extends to a large number of interdisciplinary problems involving human behavioral and physical adaptation in its varying social contexts. Duke University’s Clinical Psychology Program is annually ranked among the top clinical psychology programs in the United States. Duke’s doctoral program in Clinical Psychology is a member of The Academy of Psychological Clinical Science, which is a coalition of doctoral training programs that share a common goal of producing and applying scientific knowledge to the understanding, assessment, and amelioration of human problems.

Specific interests include intervention and prevention methods across the life course for such phenomena as aggression and antisocial behavior, depression, personality disorders, eating disorders and obesity, substance abuse, HIVAIDS, cardiovascular disease, and chronic pain. Our faculty also study behavioral cardiology, behavioral medicine, global mental health, reducing disparities in minority mental and physical health services, assessment and intervention in pediatric psychology, and gene-environment interaction.

Clinical program faculty are also actively involved in University Institutes, including the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences (DIBS) , Social Science Research Institute (SSRI) , and Duke Global Health Institute (DGHI) .

Each year the Department admits 2-5 clinical graduate students, which will result in approximately 25 students being advised by our faculty at one time. As of August, 2023, our faculty advise a total of 23 students receiving clinical training, (8 males and 15 females, 6 of whom are from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups).

In accordance with American Psychological Association requirements, a more complete description of the clinical program's goals, clinical training resources, and special requirements can be found in the on-line Clinical Graduate Student Handbook.

Because the Clinic is a training center, utmost care is taken to ensure we can provide appropriate services; clients in crisis or in need of a higher level of care are typically referred to a more suitable clinic.

The Clinic is located in Suite 312 of the Psychology/Sociology building on Duke's West Campus .

During the academic year, clinic hours are 9a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays. Hours are slightly abbreviated during the summer months.

NOTE: Our program has made the GRE General Test  optional  for admission to the fall 2024 class. You may submit scores if you have them, and they will be considered by the admissions committee. Applications without GRE scores will be given equal consideration.

Each year we receive between 350 and 400 completed applications for admission to our clinical psychology program. A variety of bases for admission are utilized, although some common themes emerge. In our search for qualified graduate students, we look for the potential to conduct original research, to engage in scholarship, to work effectively with others, including future clients, and to have an impact on the broader field of clinical psychology. We seek applicants who are interested both in research and in clinical practice. It is important for applicants to consider and to articulate potential matches with the research interests of one or more potential faculty mentors. While an undergraduate integrative psychology major is not required, most of our students were psychology majors, and most had post-baccalaureate research experience in psychology prior to application. Every year about 20 applicants are contacted for virtual interviews with our faculty. Interviews are required for clinical applicants. Interviews take place in late January - early February with invitations extended a few weeks prior to interviews.

All students accepted into the program are guaranteed five years of stipend support, as well as full tuition. Stipends may be based on fellowships, research or teaching assistant positions, or, for more senior students, their own external research support.

Students and faculty in the Clinical Psychology Program established the Anti-Racism Community (ARC) in July 2020 as a response to the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, the rampant police brutality at subsequent nationwide protests, and the preceding 401-year legacy of anti-Black racism in the United States. The mission of the ARC is to:

  • Establish an anti-racist culture in all activities conducted by students, faculty, and staff
  • Acknowledge the impact of centuries of systemic and individual racism at the national, statewide, and university levels, and
  • Take all possible corrective action to eliminate these effects on our program

ARC members meet monthly to provide general updates and make requests for assistance in completing tasks. Currently, members of the ARC are organized into three Pillars. Members are welcome to join one or more Pillar based on their interests. Each Pillar meets separately to coordinate and work on their specific goals and actions. The goals of the three Pillars are to

Pillar 1 : Enhance recruitment and retention of BIPOC faculty, students, and staff that reflect national demographics

Pillar 2 : Ensure all academic activities reflect anti-racism as a core value of the program

Pillar 3 : Elevate multicultural awareness as a core competency of clinical training and professional development for all faculty, students, and staff

The ARC is an action-oriented community. Below are a few of the actions taken by the ARC since its inception:

  • Creation of the Clinical Science Anti-Racism Series , a set of presentations and discussions on the ways clinical practice, research, and professional issues is informed by anti-racist approaches
  • Launch an annual  Virtual Office Hours program , an opportunity for individuals underrepresented in psychology to receive individualized feedback on their applications to PhD programs in psychology
  • Hosted a weekly writing group for faculty, post-docs, and graduate students, especially those from underrepresented communities and those looking to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within our department
  • Establishment of Peer Multicultural Consultation Team , a monthly meeting during which students seek culturally-informed perspectives from other students on diverse patients
  • Evaluation of all P&N undergraduate syllabi for content that supports inclusion, reduction of "hidden curriculum" elements, and anti-racist principles. Provided feedback to the P&N Faculty with resources for improving DEI principles in syllabi

Best Colleges & Universities

Accelerated online PhD programs in psychology are becoming increasingly popular among students seeking to advance their careers in the field. These programs offer a shorter path to earning a doctoral degree compared to traditional programs, allowing students to complete their studies in a shorter amount of time. Online programs provide flexibility and convenience, allowing students to continue working while pursuing their degree.

When it comes to finding the best accelerated online PhD programs in psychology, there are several factors to consider. The quality of education is a top priority, as students want to ensure that they are receiving a rigorous and comprehensive education that prepares them for their future careers. Additionally, the format of the online program and the availability of accelerated classes are important considerations for students who want to complete their degree quickly.

In this article, we will explore the top accelerated online PhD programs in psychology, considering factors such as quality of education, program format, and availability of accelerated classes. By providing a comprehensive overview of the best programs available, we hope to help students make an informed decision about their educational path in psychology.

Overview of Accelerated Online Psychology Doctorates

Accelerated online psychology doctoral programs offer a fast track to earning a doctoral degree in psychology. These programs are designed for students who want to complete their degree in a shorter amount of time than traditional doctoral programs. In this section, we will discuss the typical structure of a traditional doctoral program in psychology, the features of accelerated programs, the types of degrees offered, and the importance of accreditation.

Typical Structure of a Traditional Doctoral Program in Psychology

A traditional doctoral program in psychology typically takes 6 to 10 years to complete and requires students to attend classes on campus. Students are required to complete coursework, a comprehensive exam, and a dissertation. They may also be required to complete an internship or practicum. The curriculum typically covers topics such as research methods, statistics, cognitive psychology, social psychology, and developmental psychology.

Features of Accelerated Programs

Accelerated online psychology doctoral programs are designed to be completed in a shorter amount of time than traditional programs. They offer flexible schedules and online coursework, which allows students to complete their degree while working full-time or taking care of other responsibilities. Some programs also offer hybrid options, which combine online coursework with on-campus residencies. Accelerated programs typically require students to complete the same coursework, comprehensive exam, and dissertation as traditional programs.

Types of Degrees Offered

Accelerated online psychology doctoral programs offer two types of degrees: Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Psychology. The PsyD degree is focused on clinical practice and prepares students for careers as licensed psychologists. The PhD degree is focused on research and prepares students for careers in academia or research.

Accreditation and Its Importance

Accreditation is important for both traditional and online doctoral psychology programs. Accreditation ensures that the program meets high standards of academic quality and that graduates are prepared for careers in psychology. The American Psychological Association (APA) is the accrediting body for doctoral psychology programs. Students should look for programs that are accredited by the APA or another recognized accrediting agency.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Accelerated online psychology PhD programs offer several advantages over traditional programs. One of the most significant advantages is the potential cost savings. Online programs often have lower tuition fees than traditional programs, and students can save money on transportation, housing, and other expenses associated with attending a physical campus.

Another advantage of accelerated online psychology PhD programs is the flexibility they offer. Students can complete coursework and assignments at their own pace, which makes it easier to balance work, family, and other commitments. Online programs also eliminate the need for students to relocate to attend a physical campus, which can be a significant advantage for those who live far from their desired program.

Fast-paced learning is another advantage of accelerated online psychology PhD programs. Students can complete their degree in a shorter amount of time than traditional programs, which can be beneficial for those who want to enter the workforce or pursue further education sooner.

Disadvantages

Despite the advantages, accelerated online psychology PhD programs also have some potential drawbacks. Limited face-to-face interaction with professors and peers can be a disadvantage for some students, as it can make it more challenging to build relationships and receive personalized feedback.

PhD Program

psychology phd track

The PhD is conferred upon candidates who have demonstrated substantial scholarship and the ability to conduct independent research and analysis in Psychology.

A student typically concentrates in one of several areas within Psychology. Across all areas, the training program emphasizes the development of research competence, and students are encouraged to develop skills and attitudes that are appropriate to a career of continuing research productivity.

Two kinds of experience are necessary for this purpose. One is the learning of substantial amounts of theoretical, empirical, computational and methods information . A number of courses and seminars are provided to assist in this learning, and students are expected to construct a program in consultation with their advisor(s) to obtain this knowledge in the most stimulating and economical fashion.

A second aspect of training is one that cannot be gained from the courses or seminars. This is first-hand knowledge of, and practical experience with, the methods of psychological investigation and study . Therefore, students are expected to spend half of their time on research and to take no more than 10 units of course work per quarter, beginning in the first quarter.

Students achieve competence in unique ways and at different rates. Students and advisors work together to plan a program to accomplish these objectives.

If current students have any questions about the PhD program, please email the Student Services Manager, Dena Zlatunich, at  denamz [at] stanford.edu (denamz[at]stanford[dot]edu) . The current Director of Graduate Studies is Professor Hyo Gwoen.

PsyD in Clinical Psychology  Philadelphia Campus

The Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology (PsyD) program, offered at our Philadelphia, Pennsylvania campus , trains practitioner-scholar psychologists to work in a broad range of clinical settings, with an emphasis on a holistic approach to interdisciplinary care and service to diverse and underserved populations.

In our American Psychological Association accredited program, highly credentialed faculty present a curriculum oriented in cognitive-behavioral theory and empirically supported treatments addressing the most current developments in psychology, while enhancing learning through practical clinical applications and interprofessional education. The PsyD in Clinical Psychology program emphasizes professional self-reflection, mentorship, attention to diversity, advocacy and social justice.

PsyD Program Mission

The PsyD program aims to educate professional clinical psychologists to enable them to meet the individual and collective mental health needs of all persons, with attention to diversity of gender, race, ethnicity, social class, sexual orientation, religion, age, and abilities, by use of comprehensive, empirically-supported cognitive and behavioral therapies, in collaboration with primary care physicians and other health professionals in an effort to provide holistic multidisciplinary health care services. We seek to train culturally competent clinical psychologists who will be leaders, advocates, clinicians, educators, and supervisors, with a commitment to scholarship and the application of research methodologies to answer clinical questions in their daily practices and communities.

PsyD in Clinical Psychology Program Details

The learning in the first two years of the PsyD in Clinical Psychology program is through didactic courses that cover the scientific and clinical foundations of the discipline, with inclusion of experiential components, and labs for skills training. Use of standardized patient actors provides a means for gaining formative feedback on the integration of didactic and clinical skills. Fieldwork and seminar experiences in the third and fourth years enable the student to integrate knowledge of theory and research with practicum experience. During this time, students are also mentored through the dissertation process. Students' interprofessional education occurs throughout the first four years through coursework, team-based learning, and simulations with DO, PA, counseling, nursing, and other healthcare professionals.

Clinical PsyD Internship

The internship provides the clinical psychology doctoral student with an intensive, yearlong, supervised work experience to develop, practice and integrate new clinical skills. It represents the culmination of the doctoral experience, the last practical training step before earning a doctorate in psychology. All students are required to apply to APA-accredited and APPIC internships.

PCOM PsyD Internship Match Rate

Since 2015, PCOM students have had a 98 percent psychology internship match rate (159 of 162) in the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) internship matching program. See our Student Admissions, Outcomes and Other Data page for additional details.

Career Options for Clinical Psychologists

Here are some of the career opportunities available to PCOM PsyD in Clinical Psychology program graduates:

  • Clinical psychology professionals work with individuals, families and groups in a variety of settings such as hospitals and private practice. Some graduates teach in academic settings. According to the National Center for Health Workforce Analysis Behavioral Health Workforce Projections, demand for clinical psychologists is projected to exceed supply by 2030.
  • The PCOM PsyD in Clinical Psychology program trains psychologists who are well grounded in fundamental and general training, and who have the opportunity to develop specialized interests in their later years, or through electives and dissertation work. They are prepared to deliver essential services to today’s diverse populations, particularly the underserved with an attention to patient-centered care and interprofessional collaboration.

What can you do with a psychology degree?

Explore jobs and outcomes for an online bachelor’s in psychology

Earning a psychology degree means becoming a psychologist, right?

Not necessarily.

You may be surprised to learn that 50% of psychology bachelor’s degree-earners don’t wind up working in health care at all. The skills gained in a psychology degree program are widely valued by employers and applicable to a variety of settings.

According to Oregon State University senior instructor Kristen Yax, psychology is “the Swiss Army Knife of degrees” — one that can lead graduates in countless rewarding directions.

“First and foremost, it’s a direct path to many career opportunities in the field – from clinical or social to research or education,” says Yax. “But psychology is also relevant if not critical in almost every profession imaginable, and a psych degree opens many doors in many industries that more specialized degrees of study often do not.”

And as someone interested in studying psychology, you likely want to learn what drives people, whether that’s in the workplace, social structures, or through their purchasing habits or technology usage.

So, with a core focus on human behavior, what can you do when you earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology online from Oregon State University? Let’s explore.

Social services

Perhaps most related to health care work is the field of social services. While social services could include mental health therapist and psychologist roles (with a master’s or Ph.D. under your belt), helping people in your community can reach far beyond those two roles.

With skills like counseling techniques, problem-solving, communication aptitude and strong empathy responses, psychology graduates are primed for helping roles.

“Social services work revolves around a shared set of values and combines insights from cognitive science, advocacy, psychotherapy, and public policy,” according to The Best Schools social services career guide .

Jobs in the field of social services for psychology bachelor’s graduates include social and human service assistant , probation officer or correctional treatment specialist , community health worker and social and community service manager .

Human resources

One adjacent outcome for a psychology bachelor’s graduate is working in the field of human resources. This career path requires interpersonal skills, data analysis and ethics and diversity knowledge — all competencies that you can gain through your coursework as a psychology student.

According to Learn.org , “Individuals with a psychology degree have diverse career opportunities in human resources.”

This category of work includes a variety of entry-level and advanced positions, including  HR generalist ,  recruitment coordinator , compensation and benefits manager , human resources manager and even career coaching.

Oregon State grad Tracey Campion said this of her experience gaining the skills needed to become a career coach: “A bachelor’s degree in psychology could not be a more fitting education for a coach, and I am so appreciative that the OSU Ecampus [psychology] program was available for me to return to school online as an older, working student from outside the country.”

Marketing and communications

Another field psychology graduates are qualified to enter is marketing and communications. At first glance, psychology and marketing may seem unrelated. But with core knowledge in areas like behavioral motivation, research skills and statistical analysis, the parallels shift into focus.

“Psychology majors are well-suited for careers in marketing. The courses you take in your undergraduate studies, such as social psychology, human behavior, research design and statistics, directly apply to many roles within the umbrella of marketing,” according to a report published by Psychology.org .

Career opportunities in marketing for psychology bachelor’s graduates include advertising, promotions or marketing management , public relations and fundraising , or market research analysis .

Psychology and technology ? Minus the final five letters, you may wonder what these two fields may have in common. The short answer is people. The more precise answer is knowledge in topics like cognitive processes, evaluation development and the building and coding of qualitative assessments.

“UX designers make products and services more intuitive, enjoyable, and streamlined for users — often in a digital environment, like a business’s website or app,” according to Psychology.org . “An understanding of psychology fits well with this profession. Concepts like memory limitation, cognitive load, and the psychology of colors all make for a better designer.”

In the field of technology, psychology bachelor’s graduates can look for job opportunities as a UX designer , a cognitive scientist , or an AI ethics specialist .

If you decide to go on to graduate school, you can put a master’s in human-computer interaction to work in the field of research.

What about graduate school?

Graduate school is a common next step for students who earn a psychology bachelor’s degree. Because the knowledge gained in an undergraduate psychology program is so broad, students often choose to pursue a more specific master’s or Ph.D. after graduation.

“ Oregon State University and their rigorous psychologyprogram did help me to [feel] reallyprepared . I was always on time for early admissions applications and things of that sort. Ilook forward to going into my graduate school, and all thanksto everyone here,” saidKaren Baek, who earned her B.A. in Psychology online.

We’ve already explored a few outcome-specific post-secondary degree options, but let’s take a look at a few of the most common graduate degrees for psychology students:

  • Master’s in Clinical Psychology
  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Research Psychology
  • Juris Doctor in Law
  • Master’s in Criminal Justice
  • Master’s in Social Work
