Osuofia’s First Job Was With The Nigerian Television Authority (NTA)

Osuofia started his journey in the corporate world in Enugu after he elected to work professionally. His first port of work was with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). Although it is not known how much he earned, it became a major stepping stone for the career of the then-broadcaster.

He Started His Career In The Movie Industry As A Writer

Since the time that he was a child, Nkem Owoh had developed talent as an actor and comedian. He would go on to act on stage as a student. Nonetheless, his career in the movie sector as a professional started with him working as a writer. He notably handled the subtitle of an Igbo language home video titled Living in Bondage . He featured as Onye-Eze in the movie of the same title (2001), Fake Doctor (2001), Long John (2002), Spanner (2002), Mr. Trouble (2003), and Lion Finger (2003) among others.

Nkem Owoh Got His Nickname Osuofia From One Of His Earliest Movies

At the age of 45 in 2003, Owoh reached international stardom with a comedy film titled Osuofia in London . The film, which was produced by Kingsley Ogoro and Kola and was directed by Kingsley Ogoro, centers its story on the life of Osuofia. It is noteworthy that the actor was first called Osuofiason in the film Ikuku in 1995. The screen name has gone on to somewhat replace his real name.

In Osuofia in London , the actor portrayed a villager from Nigeria whose brother left him a lot of wealth following his demise. Osuofia headed to London and found his late brother’s fiancee, Samantha. There was a twist on whether Osuofia should follow the custom of his home which would allow him to inherit Samantha (as a wife), or go with her custom.

The fame of the movie would add further to Nkem Owoh being known widely as Osuofia. It also won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Soundtrack and was commercially successful. A year after its release in 2004, a sequel titled Osuofia in London 2 was pushed into the market. Like the first one, it also received positive reviews and grossed highly.

Although the song gained massive attention, it also became controversial. The lyrical content of the song would lead to accusations that the Osuofia in London veteran actor was promoting fraud. As such, the song was banned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as well as by the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission.

The music career of the actor took a hiatus and sometime in 2017, he reportedly made a comeback but in a different light. Rather than continuing with songs about love amidst other themes, he opted for gospel music. Nkem Owoh was born on February 7, 1958, in Amagu Village, Udi Town in Enugu State. He attended primary and secondary schools in Enugu State and then proceeded to the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, where he bagged a degree in Engineering.

Upon graduation, Nkem Owoh began his professional career as a broadcaster with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Enugu Zone. He worked with the national broadcasting outfit for a while before he moved to the Anambra State Broadcasting Service (ASBS). Discography

Nkem Owoh was one of the early exponents of Nollywood who also tried his hands at singing. He released just under 10 songs, some of which found their way to the limelight. One song, in particular, I Go Chop Your Dollar , gained notoriety due to its message and fierce objection by the Nigerian authorities.

Whether he is well versed as a singer is still contentious and left to the public to judge, but he stopped singing after a while to concentrate on his acting career.

Below is a compilation of his songs.

I Go Chop Your Dollar

Mama No Know ‘N’ Pikin Again

Agreement

Know Me When I’m Poor

Akaram Aka N’ime Jesus (I’m Strong In Jesus)

Nkem Owoh is, by media reports, estimated to be worth N1.66 billion ($4m). He is reputed to be one of the highest-paid actors in Nollywood. Osuofia has previously racked up endorsement deals with various companies such as a telecommunications company and an alcoholic beverage.

He is said to be the owner of a Mitsubishi Montero and a Mercedes Benz 4matic. However, not much is known about the other sources of his earnings.

Nkem Owoh got married to his wife, Ngozi Nkem Owoh, in 1998. The couple has been married for 24 years and has two adult daughters.

However, not much is known about his wife and daughters as the actor shields his family from the prying eyes of the media and strictly protects their privacy. He only revealed the identity of his children once when he attended a ceremony announcing his endorsement deal with a telecommunications company. Even at that, his daughters did not disclose their names or grant interviews to journalists at the event.

The actor also had a younger brother, Bartholomew Owoh, who was killed alongside two other men. According to media reports, the 26-year-old Bartholomew Owoh, a former employee of Nigeria Airways; Lawal Akanni Ojuolape, a 30-year-old spare parts dealer; and Bernard Ogedengbe, a 29-year-old sailor, were killed in the 1980s for illegal possession of cocaine and heroin.

Controversy

As earlier mentioned, Owoh sang the song: I Go  Chop Your Dollar . The song, released in 2004, talked about advanced fee fraud and it was used in The Master , a movie in which the actor played the role of a fraudster. The song became popular but Owoh was accused of promoting and supporting fraud through its lyrics.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) frowned at the song and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), the broadcast media regulator, subsequently banned radio stations from airing it on their platforms.

A year later, in 2015, Owoh was placed on a one-year ban, alongside other actors, by the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria for reportedly charging huge fees from movie producers due to their A-list status. It has, however, been lifted.

In 2007, the actor was arrested by the Dutch Police, alongside 110 people, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, while performing a musical show. He was arrested for alleged lottery fraud and immigration violations following a seven-month investigation that the Dutch police dubbed “Operation Apollo”. He was later released without charges.

He also felt a dose of Nigeria’s security challenges when he was kidnapped in Eastern Nigeria in November 2009. His abductors reportedly demanded a N15 million ransom, but he was released after his family members allegedly paid a ransom fee of N1.4 million.

Nkem Owoh Age

Nkem Owoh is 66 years old.

Nkem Owoh Early Life

Owoh schooled at Nsukka for Primary and Secondary Education. He had began his tertiary Education at the University of Ilorin and completed it at Institute of Management Technolgy(IMT), Enugu where he bagged a degree in Electrical Engineering.

Owoh began his acting career way back in his Primary and Secondary school days. Owoh knew right from time that he had a talent in acting. Infact Nkem Owoh is one unique Nollywood actor that has a way of interpreting his roles. He is a born natural when it comes to acting. He worked with WACO Engineering after his youth service but was unfortunately laid off after a year. This gave him room for radio and television productions.

Nkem Owoh Career

Owoh had his first major break in acting when he landed a role in the screen adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. The 1987 series had fifty episodes each spanning about 50 minutes and was aired on the Nigerian Television Authority. As Nollywood picked pace, he landed a supporting role in both Ukwa 1 and 2 in 1995 alongside other big names such as Sam Loco and Patience Ozokwor (Mama G).

He is credited in over 200 films and TV productions. Most Nigerian producers prefer to have sequels to almost every other film thus benefitting actors like Owoh who have to feature in movies that they have played as lead acts or major supporting casts. His biggest act so far is Osuofia in London which received worldwide acclaim in 2003.

He is also known for performing the song “I Go Chop Your Dollar” about advance fee fraud. The song was featured in the film The Master in which Owoh plays a scammer. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission banned the song. He was also banned for fronting unattainable demands. He was accused severally by producers of charging exorbitant appearance fees. The Association of Movie Makers and Producers banned him for making unreasonable demands in 2004. He was among a list of several Nigerian artists who were barred from acting in the country due to their high fees and difficult contract demands.

Nkem Owoh Personal Life

Nkem Owoh’s wife is Ngozi Nkem Owoh. They married in 1998. The couple is blessed with two daughters. There is a common misconception that he and Chinwe Owoh are married. According to him, they are in-laws and not husband and wife.

In 2007 Owoh was arrested in Amsterdam, Netherlands (Bijlmermeer neighborhood in the Amsterdam Zuidoost borough) as the result of a 7-month investigation by the Dutch police dubbed “Operation Apollo”. He was arrested while performing a musical show when the police raided the event and arrested 111 people on suspicion of lottery fraud and immigration violations. He was later released.

Owoh disappeared from the public limelight for a while in December 2008. Then rumours picked up that he had passed on after a drug overdose just a month after his movie award win. Another version had it that the actor had been convicted somewhere in the Arabian desert for drug trafficking while still others said that he was kidnapped and beheaded in Russia. Just like other stars that have been killed ‘on the internet,’ Owoh had to make a public appearance before the press to dispel the rumours. In November 2009, he was kidnapped in eastern Nigeria. His kidnappers demanded a 15 million naira ransom. He was released after his family members allegedly paid a ransom fee of 1.4 million naira.

Nkem Owoh Awards

In 2008, Owoh won the best actor in a lead role at the African Movie Academy Awards. Other awards won by him include; City People Movie Special Recognition Award (2014), City People Movie Lifetime Achievement Award (2017) and Africa Movie Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement (2017).
