Mobile operating systems (Mobile OS) manage mobile gadgets like phones and tablets. These systems run apps. They are not like desktops as mobiles have different needs. An operating system (OS) for mobile devices manages the basic functions. It runs apps, controls memory, and connects to networks. These systems provide an easy-to-use interface.

They’re designed for smartphones, tablets, and wearable tech. Mobile OSes let you multitask, browse the web and download apps. Popular options include iOS from Apple, Android from Google, and Huawei’s HarmonyOS. Mobile operating systems power modern gadgets. With them, phones become portable computers, communication tools, and entertainment hubs.

Key Features of a Mobile Operating System

1. User Interface (UI): Touch inputs of Graphical User Interface (GUI) provided by mobile OS are optimized. This is where users can use touch gestures, in other words, swiping, tapping, and pinching, to interact with their gadgets.

2. Multitasking: It helps in running of many apps at the same time but what is more we can quickly switch between them without any hindrance. Such offloading is for applications that are not currently used actively.

3. Connectivity: It provides a variety of connections such as cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC (Near Field Communication) and others to facilitate the communication of the device with other devices and networks.

4. Application Management: Is a platform that has its own app marketplace or store which the users utilize to browse, install, run and updates the applications exclusively for that platform.

5. Resource Management: Efficiently allocates hardware resources like the CPU ,ram , and battery by achieving a balance between performance and battery life.

Types of Mobile Operating System

The mobile world has seen many operating systems. Some are big and powerful. Others are small and niche. Here are the main types of mobile OS :

1. Android: Made by Google, Android is the most used mobile OS worldwide. It’s an open-source system built on Linux code. Android is made mostly for touchscreen phones and tablets. Being open allows companies to customize Android for their gadgets. That leads to many different Android devices.

2 . Apple Inc. created iOS , the operating system for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Its smooth interface and tight Apple ecosystem integration are hallmarks. However, Apple’s total control over hardware and software limits customization options, unlike Android’s open platform.

3. Huawei developed HarmonyOS (Hongmeng OS in China): work across diverse devices like smartphones, wearables, laptops, smart home gadgets. By offering a unified ecosystem, Huawei aims to navigate US government restrictions on its business.

4. KaiOS is a basic mobile OS: It powers basic phones without touchscreens. KaiOS is based on discontinued Firefox OS. KaiOS supports 4G, GPS, and apps like Facebook and WhatsApp. It offers strong capabilities for non-smartphone mobile devices.

5. Tizen is a Linux-based mobile OS developed by Samsung. It was created with Intel and the Tizen Association. Tizen powers various Samsung products.

Smartphones have different operating systems. Android and iOS are the biggest. But others exist for different users. Operating systems cater to diverse needs. They have pros, cons, and target markets.

Future Trends of Mobile Operating System

The future of mobile operating systems is changing. New technology, consumer shifts, and global challenges impact them. Here are some key trends and innovations.

1. Augmented reality and virtual reality technologies will grow. Operating systems must support AR and VR apps. They will enable immersive experiences and enhanced visualizations. Mobile security will become more crucial. Biometrics authentication may increase privacy protection. Battery life optimizations could improve through AI technology.

2. Cross platform and Ecosystem Integration: Devices work together better these days. Apple and Google want their phones, tablets, watches, and smart home stuff to feel like one big happy family. Huawei’s HarmonyOS tries this too – a single OS for various gizmos, making them work as a united pack.

3. Increased Security: Privacy and security are major priorities now. Mobile operating systems bulk up defenses against hackers and snooping companies. Expect tougher data encryption, stricter app permissions, and features blocking unwanted tracking of your personal info. They’re safeguarding your digital life.

4. A.I. and machine learning will become more vital parts of mobile O.S. They will aid customized experiences, predictive text/actions, better photography tools, and smarter virtual helpers.

5. 5G networks are rolling out globally; mobile O.S are evolving for enhanced connection abilities. Expect faster internet, handling data-heavy tasks, supporting AR/VR apps, and improved IoT device linking.

6. Making tech accessible is crucial. Future mobile O.S updates may include advanced accessibility features.

Frequently Asked Questions on Mobile Operating Systems – FAQs

What are the most popular mobile operating systems.

The mobile OS scene has two main players: Android by Google and iOS by Apple. Other contenders include HarmonyOS (Huawei) and KaiOS for basic phones.

Can I install any mobile OS on any smartphone?

Most of the time, no. Smartphones are built to run one specific OS. Switching is usually impossible. However, some tech geeks modify Android versions (custom ROMs ) on their devices. But this custom flashing isn’t advised for average users due to potential issues.

How to update mobile OS?

Mobile OS updates are usually available over-the-air from the manufacturer or developer. You can find updates in your device settings under system updates. It’s simple! Apps have to match the OS’s specific frameworks and APIs. Because Android and iOS use different development environments, developers must create separate app versions for each. That’s why apps aren’t interchangeable between platforms.

Is it possible to run iOS apps on Android or vice versa?

No, running apps directly across platforms isn’t supported. The architectures and development frameworks differ. But some third-party tools let developers test their apps on other platforms. Still, the apps must be built for each OS separately.

Introduction • Design and capabilities of a Mobile OS (Operating System) is very different than a general purpose OS running on desktop machines: • mobile devices have constraints and restrictions on their physical characteristic such as screen size, memory, processing power and etc. • Scarce availability of battery power • Limited amount of computing and communication capabilities http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 4

Introduction (Cont.) Thus, they need different types of operating systems depending on the capabilities they support. e.g. a PDA OS is different from a Smartphone OS. Operating System is a piece of software responsible for management of operations, control, coordinate the use of the hardware among the various application programs, and sharing the resources of a device. http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 5

Operating System Structure Applications OS Libraries Device Operating System Base, Kernel Low-Level Hardware, Manufacturer Device Drivers A mobile OS is a software platform on top of which other programs called application programs, can run on mobile devices such as PDA, cellular phones, smartphone and etc. http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 6

Mobile Operating System Platforms • There are many mobile operating systems. The followings demonstrate the most important ones: • Java ME Platform • Palm OS • Symbian OS • Linux OS • Windows Mobile OS • BlackBerry OS • iPhone OS • Google Android Platform http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 7

Java ME Platform J2ME platform is a set of technologies, specifications and libraries developed for small devices like mobile phones, pagers, and personal organizers. Java ME was designed by Sun Microsystems. It is licensed under GNU General Public License http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 8

Java ME Architecture Application Profile Optional Packages Vendor specific classes - OEM Configuration Native Operating System Device/ Hardware Java ME platforms are composed of the following elements: http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 9

Java ME Main Components Configuration: it defines a minimum platform including the java language, virtual machine features and minimum class libraries for a grouping of devices. E.g. CLDC Profile: it supports higher-level services common to a more specific class of devices. A profile builds on a configuration but adds more specific APIs to make a complete environment for building applications. E.g. MIDP http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 10

Java ME Optional Package: it provides specialized service or functionality that may not be associated with a specific configuration or profile. The following table lists some of the available packages: http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 11

Java ME Platforms • It includes two kinds of platforms: • High-end platform for high-end consumer devices. E.g. TV set-top boxes, Internet TVs, auto-mobile navigation systems • Low-end platform for low-end consumer devices. E.g. cell phones, and pagers http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 12

Java ME Platforms (Cont.) Personal Profile MIDP Foundation Profile CLDC CDC KVM JVM Fig.1- Low-end consumer device platform architecture Fig.2- High-end consumer device platform architecture The following figures demonstrate the elements of these two types of platforms: http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 13

Java ME CLDC • We focus on “Low-end” consumer devices: • CLDC configuration address the following areas: • Java language and virtual machine features • Core Java libraries • CLDC Specific Libraries (Input/output & Networking) • Internationalization: There is a limited support for converting Unicode characters to and from a sequence of bytes. • Security: CLDC addresses the following topics to security • At the low-level the virtual machine security is achieved by requiring downloaded Java classes to pass a class file verification step. • Applications are protected from each other by being run in a closed “sandbox” environment. • Classes in protected system packages cannot be overridden by applications. http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 14

Java ME CLDC (Cont.) The entire CLDC implementation (static size of the K virtual machine + class libraries) should fit in less than 128 kilobytes. It guarantee portability and interoperability of profile-level code between the various kinds of mobile (CLDC) devices http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 15

Palm OS Palm OS[1] is an embedded operating system designed for ease of use with a touchscreen-based graphical user interface. It has been implemented on a wide variety of mobile devices such as smart phones, barcode readers, and GPS devices. It is run on Arm architecture-based processors. It is designed as a 32-bit architecture. http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 16

Palm OS Features • The key features of Palm OS [1,2,3] are: • A single-tasking OS: • Palm OS Garnet (5.x) uses a kernel developed at Palm, but it does not expose tasks or threads to user applications. In fact, it is built with a set of threads that can not be changed at runtime. • Palm OS Cobalt (6.0 or higher) does support multiple threads but does not support creating additional processes by user applications. • Palm OS has a preemptive multitasking kernel that provides basic tasks but it does not expose this feature to user applications . http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 17

Palm OS Features (Cont.) • Memory Management: • The Memory, RAM and ROM, for each Palm resides on a memory module known as card. In other words, each memory card contains RAM, ROM or both. Palms can have no card, one card or multiple cards. • Expansion support[3]: • This capability not only augments the memory and I/O , but also it facilitates data interchanges with other Palm devices and with other non-Palm devices such as digital cameras, and digital audio players. • Handwriting recognition input called Graffiti 2 http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 18

Palm OS Features (Cont.) • HotSync technology for synchronization with PC computers • Sound playback and record capabilities • TCP/IP network access • Support of serial port, USB, Infrared, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections • Defined standard data format for PIM (Personal Information Management) applications to store calendar, address, task and note entries, accessible by third-party applications http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 19

Palm OS Features (Cont.) • Security model: • Device can be locked by password, arbitrary application records can be made private [2] • Palm OS Cobalt include a certificate manager. The Certificate Manager handles X.509 certificates[3]. http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 20

Symbian OS Symbian OS is 32 bit, little-endian operating system, running on different flavors of ARM architecture[4]. It is a multitasking operating system and very less dependence on peripherals. Kernel runs in the privileged mode and exports its service to user applications via user libraries. http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 21

Symbian OS Structure User libraries include networking, communication, I/O interfaces and etc. Access to these services and resources is coordinated through a client-server framework. Clients use the service APIs exposed by the server to communicate with the server. The client-server communication is conducted by the kernel. http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 22

Symbian OS Structure (Cont.) Symbian OS Libraries KVM Application Engines Servers Symbian OS Base- Kernel Hardware The following demonstrates the Symbian OS architecture[5]: http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 23

Symbian OS Features Real-time: it has a real-time, multithreaded kernel. Data Caging [6]: it allows applications to have their own private data partition. This feature allows for applications to guarantee a secure data store. It can be used for e-commerce applications, location aware applications and etc. Multimedia: it supports audio, video recording, playback and streaming, and Image conversion. http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 24

Symbian OS Features (Cont.) Platform Security [6]: Symbian provides a security mechanism against malware. It allows sensitive operations can be accessed by applications which have been certified by a signing authority. In addition, it supports full encryption and certificate management, secure protocols ( HTTPS, TLS and SSL) and WIM framework. http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 25

Symbian OS Features (Cont.) Internationalization support: it supports Unicode standard. Fully object-oriented and component- based Optimized memory management Client- server architecture [6]: described in previous slides, it provides simple and high-efficient inter-process communication. This feature also eases porting of code written for other platforms to Symbian OS. http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 26

Symbian OS Features (Cont.) A Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL): This layer provides a consistent interface to hardware and supports device-independency Kernel offers hard real-time guarantees to kernel and user mode threads. http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 27

Embedded Linux OS It is known as Embedded Linux which is used in embedded computer systems such as mobile phones, Personal Digital Assistants, media players and other consumer devices. In spite of Linux operating system designed for Servers and desktops, the Embedded Linux is designed for devices which have relatively limited resources such as small size of RAM, storage, screen, limited power and etc. Then, they should have an optimized kernel. http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 28

Embedded Linux OS It is a Real-Time Operating System (RTOS). It meets deadlines and switch context It has relatively a small footprint. Today, mobile phones can ship with a small memory. Thus, OS must not seek to occupy a large amount of available storage. It should have a small foot print. Theoretically, they deploy in a footprint of 1MB or less. It is open source. It has no cost for licensing. Examples: Motorola Mobile phones such as RAZR V8, RAZR V9, A1200 are based on MontaVista Linux. http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 29

Embedded Linux OS ARM and MIPS structures [7]: Embedded CPU architectures like ARM and MIPS offer small instruction sets and special execution modes that shrinks application size and consequently generates smaller code. http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 30

Windows Mobile OS Windows Mobile is a compact operating system designed for mobile devices and based on Microsoft Win32. It is run on Pocket PCs, Smartphones and Portable media centers. It provides ultimate interoperability. Users with various requirements are able to manipulate their data. http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 31

It allows developers design applications in a java-like language using Google-developed java libraries. It supports a wide variety of connectivity such as GSM, WiFi, 3G, … The Operating system has not been implemented yet (Feb, 2008). Several prototypes have been proposed. http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 32

Google Android Platform Android architecture: http://code.google.com/android/what-is-android.html http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 33

Google Android Platform • As demonstrated in the previous slide, the Android platform contains the following layers: • Linux Kernel: Android relies on Linux for core system services such as security, memory management, process management and etc. • Android [7] Runtime: it provides a set of core libraries which supports most of the functionality in the core libraries of Java. The Android Virtual Machine known as Dalvik VM relies on the linux kernel for some underlying functionality such as threading,… http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 34

Google Android Platform • Libraries: Android includes a set of C/C++ libraries. These libraries are exposed to developers through the Android application framework. They include media libraries, system C libraries, surface manager, 3D libraries, SQLite and etc. For more details, please visit the following link: http://code.google.com/android/what-is-android.html • Application Framework: it provides an access layer to the framework APIs used by the core applications. It allows components to be used by the developers. http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 35

iPhone OS • iPhone OS is an operating system run on iPhone and iPod. • It is based on Mach Kernel and Drawin core as Mac OS X. • The Mac OS X kernel includes the following component: • Mach Kernel • BSD • I/O component • File Systems • Networking components http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 36

iPhone OS Classic Carbon Cocoa JDK BSD QuickTime Application Services Core Services Kernel Environment The following is Mac OS X Architecture [8]: http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 37

iPhone OS Mac OS X has a preemptive multitasking environment. Preempting is the act of taking the control of operating system from one task and giving it to another task. It supports real-time behavior. In Mac OS X, each application has access to its own 4 GB address space. http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 38

iPhone OS • Not any application can directly modify the memory of the kernel. It has a strong mechanism for memory protection. • For more details about kernel architecture, please visit the following link: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Conceptual/KernelProgramming/Architecture/Architecture.html http://cmer.cis.uoguelph.ca 39

  • Mobile Operating System

A mobile operating system allows the user to run other different application software on the mobile, tablets, etc. Moreover, we can say that it is a type of operating system which is specially designed for mobiles, tablets, smartwatches, etc. Furthermore, they are a mixture of computer OS with some additional features for mobiles. Also, they are comparatively light and simple.

An operating system (OS) is a program that acts as an interface between the system hardware and the user. Moreover, it handles all the interactions between the software and the hardware. Before knowing different mobile OS, let us study some functions of an operating system.

Functions of OS

An operating system performs various tasks. Let us study them. Several functions of OS are:

1. Memory Management

It is the management of the main or primary memory. Furthermore, whatever program is executed, it has to be present in the main memory . Therefore, there can be more than one program present at a time. Hence, it is required to manage the memory.

The operating system:

  • Allocates and deallocates the memory.
  • Keeps a record of which part of primary memory is used by whom and how much.
  • Distributes the memory while multiprocessing.

2. Processor Management/Scheduling

When more than one process runs on the system the OS decides how and when a process will use the CPU. Hence, the name is also CPU Scheduling . The OS:

  • Allocates and deallocates processor to the processes.
  • Keeps record of CPU status.

3. Device Management

The processes may require devices for their use. This management is done by the OS. The OS:

  • Allocates and deallocates devices to different processes.
  • keep records of the devices.
  • Decides which process can use which device for how much time.

4. File Management

The files on a system are stored in different directories. The OS:

  • keeps records of the status and locations of files.
  • Allocates and deallocates resources.

5. Security

The OS keeps the system and programs safe and secure through authentication. A user id and password decide the authenticity of the user.

6. Other Functions

Some other functions of the OS can be:

  • Error detection.
  • keeping a record of system performance.
  • Communication between different software etc.

mobile operating systems presentation

When enterprise employees worked almost exclusively in company offices, they sat at desks and did their work on company-owned desktop computers. Now an employee's work moves with them from place to place. On laptops and tablets and phones. And very often, the work resides on devices the employees own. All this has shifted the work of the enterprise IT staff dramatically. This cavalcade of mobile devices and remote employees is one reason unified endpoint management came to be. In this guide, we look at what UEM can do, its main features, how to choose the right UEM product for your organization – and much more.

What is a mobile operating system?

A mobile operating system ( OS ) is software that allows smartphones, tablets and other devices to run applications and programs.

A mobile OS provides an interface between the device's hardware components and its software functions. It typically starts when a device powers on, presenting a screen with icons or tiles that show information and provide application access. Mobile operating systems also manage cellular and wireless network connectivity and phone access.

Millions of people use mobile operating systems worldwide, powering a wide range of devices, from smartphones to tablets and wearable technology. These systems offer users a wide selection of features, including calling and messaging, internet and cellular data connectivity, multitasking capabilities, interactive user interfaces and access to a wide range of third-party applications and services to enhance the user experience even further.

Types of mobile operating systems

There are several mobile operating systems on the market today, but two of the most widely adopted are the iPhone's OS, Apple iOS , and Google's open source OS, Google Android . These two mobile OSes take different approaches to the mobile operating system and end-user experience.

Apple distributes the only devices that natively support iOS, and it takes a "walled garden" approach, in which Apple regulates all mobile apps and services that can run on iOS devices. Apple developed iOS to run on its own XNU kernel. Apple has also released several device-specific mobile operating systems, such as watchOS for the Apple Watch and iPadOS for iPad tablets .

Google takes an Open Source approach with Android, which allows mobile device OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) to customize the Android source code to fit their devices. Android runs on the Linux kernel. Additionally, due to being open source and globally popular, Android has become a staple in development for various equipment such as kiosks, machinery, TV operating systems and more.

Other mobile operating systems are available, but their adoption rates are well below those of iOS and Android and are mostly found outside of the U.S. These include operating systems like KaiOS, Sailfish OS and Huawei's HarmonyOS.

Several mobile operating systems are no longer commonly supported. BlackBerry 10, Nokia's Symbian, LG webOS -- formerly Palm webOS and HP webOS -- and Microsoft's Windows Phone OS are all no longer supported.

Features of mobile operating systems

Mobile operating systems deliver various features to users. The distinguishing feature that mobile operating systems offer is the ability to connect to the internet via the smartphone's built-in modem and a wireless service provider such as Verizon or AT&T. This is a major difference between mobile operating systems and most desktop OSes, which rely on a Wi-Fi network or Ethernet connection to access the internet, giving end users the ability to work remotely.

Mobile OSes offer a native web browser application, which allows users to search the internet and visit webpages. Mobile operating systems also provide application stores, which enable users to download and interface with mobile applications. Several mobile operating systems also have native GPS ( global positioning system ) applications that allow users to search for locations, follow step-by-step directions and, in some cases, share locations with different devices. The GPS feature relies on the mobile device's hardware and can't run without that support.

Other common mobile operating system features include native email applications that can link work and personal email accounts, a calendar application to keep track of tasks, meetings and events and a contacts library to organize and search for contact information.

Mobile operating systems also include important enterprise management controls. With devices now housing both user and corporate data, it is important that these mobile OSes are secure, and data can be remotely managed and accessed if needed. Apple and Google have developed standard APIs allowing MDM vendors to create platforms for securing devices that have features such as the following:

  • Pin code generation and encryption.
  • Provisioning Wi-Fi and certificates.
  • Enabling and disabling features and capabilities.
  • Remote wipe and factory reset if a device is lost or stolen.
  • Safeguards to ensure end-user privacy and security for BYOD programs.

Other common features include customizable home screens and app stores, access to cloud storage solutions, advanced enterprise and corporate management security options, support for multiple accounts, multimedia capabilities such as music and video players, messaging and collaboration features, and more. Each system has unique features to help users find what best suits their needs.

History and timeline of mobile operating systems

The history of mobile operating systems dates to the early and mid-1990s as manufacturers evolved beyond embedded systems to new operating systems for their PDAs, such as PenPoint OS by GO Corp. and Newton OS by Apple.

Windows Mobile was a mobile operating system developed by Microsoft, first released in 2000 as Pocket PC, also labeled as Windows Mobile Classic and Windows Mobile Professional. It allowed users to access many of the same features of their desktop computers, such as Office Outlook and Internet Explorer. The platform received updates until 2010, when Windows Phone 7 replaced it. Microsoft designed Windows Phone 7's UI from scratch to make it more touch-friendly. The platform eventually evolved into what's now known as Windows 10 Mobile, with its last release in 2017.

BlackBerry OS 1.0 was released in 2002 and was followed by numerous iterations as the company worked to improve and expand the platform. In 2008, BlackBerry launched version 4.6, which featured a new browser and support for Wi-Fi-enabled devices. Version 5.0 introduced an improved interface that made navigation easier and other features like voice dialing and HTML email support. Version 6 offered flash player compatibility and integration with third-party social networks like Twitter and Facebook. The current version of the BlackBerry OS is 10, released in 2013, and no longer supported as of Jan. 4, 2022 .

In 2007, Apple launched its first mobile operating system with the release of its first iPhone device. At release, however, Apple marketing stated the iPhone ran a mobile version of OS X. The iPhone marked a significant user experience and functionality shift from earlier platforms. With an easy-to-use interface, intuitive design and a full-screen device with a software-based keyboard, it quickly became one of the market's most popular mobile options.

In 2008, Apple released iPhone OS 2, which included the App Store for iPhone users, allowing third-party developers to create apps for iPhones and other iOS devices. This gave users access to a vast library of apps and games, further enhancing their user experience. In 2010, Apple launched iOS 4, the first version called iOS. In 2015 Apple would also introduce a new OS, watchOS , as part of its comprehensive OS platforms.

It remains one of the leading mobile operating systems on the market, with hundreds of millions of daily users. With frequent updates and improvements made to the platform each year, enhancing security, privacy and management controls, iOS will likely remain at the forefront of mobile technology for some time.

In 2008, Google released Android as a competitor to iOS and other platforms. In the early days of Android, devices were mostly made by HTC and Motorola, with other companies joining later. Android has since become one of the most popular mobile operating systems available, with a fully customizable OS allowing end users and corporations to build custom experiences.

The first version of Android came out in 2008 as Android 1.0. This version had a basic user interface and didn't include many common features today, such as Google Play Store. Over the next few years, the platform continued to evolve, with Android 2 (Cupcake) released in 2009, followed by 3 (Honeycomb) in 2011, and 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) in 2012. Android 5.0 (Lollipop) was released in 2014 and introduced a new design language called Material Design and WearOS. Android 14 includes an enhanced user experience, stronger end-user privacy settings and enterprise management controls.

The main difference between strong, confident speakers and speakers who seem nervous in front of the room is in how relaxed and conversational they appear. Here are some basic pointers that will help you create a conversational tone when speaking, regardless of the size of your audience.

1. Avoid using the word, “presentation.” Every time you say, “I’m here to give you a presentation on X,” or, “In this presentation, you’ll see…,” you are emphasizing the formal, structured, sometimes artificial nature of the interaction. No one wants to be “presented” to. Instead, use language that emphasizes a natural, conversational exchange. “We’re here today to talk about X,” or “Today I’ll be sharing some ideas regarding Y.” You can even go so far as to say, “I’m glad we have time together today to discuss Z.” Even if your talk is not going to truly be a dialogue, you can use language that suggests engagement with the audience.

2. If you are using PowerPoint, avoid using the word “slide.” Instead of talking about the medium, talk about the concepts. Swap out, “This slide shows you…,” for, “Here we see….” Instead of saying, “On that slide I showed you a moment ago,” say, “A moment ago we were discussing X. Here’s how that issue will impact Y and Z.” Casual conversations don’t usually involve slide decks. Just because your complicated presentation on tax exposure, supply chain issues, or new health care regulations requires you to use slides, doesn’t mean you have to draw attention to that fact that the setting is formal and structured.

3. For many large-group events, speakers are provided with what’s called a “confidence monitor,” a computer screen that sits on the floor at the speaker’s feet showing the slide that appears on the large screen above the speaker’s head. Avoid using confidence monitors. Our natural inclination when using a confidence monitor is to gesture at the bullet point we’re discussing at the moment. However, we are pointing to a bullet point on the screen at our feet, which the audience can’t see, so it creates a disconnect between us and the audience. Instead, stand to the side of the large screen and gesture at the bullet point you’re talking about so that the audience knows which point you are discussing at the moment.

4. Don’t tell your audience, “I want this to be interactive.” It’s your job to make it interactive. If you are delivering the type of presentation where your audience size allows you to create true engagement with your listeners, create that connecting in stages to “warm up” the audience. Stage One engagement is to ask the audience a question relevant to your topic that you know most of the audience members can respond to affirmatively. “Who here has ever bought a new car?” or, “How many of you have ever waited more than 5 minutes on hold on a customer service line?” Raise your hand as you ask the question to indicate to the audience how to respond. Whoever has raised their hand has now participated in the discussion. They have indicated a willingness to engage. Stage Two engagement is calling on one of the people who raised their hand and asking a specific, perfunctory question. Again, it needs to be a question they can answer easily. If your first questions is, “Who here has bought a new car?” you can then call on someone and ask, “How long ago,” or “What kind of car did you buy most recently?” If your first question was, “Have you ever waited on hold for more than 5 minutes,” you can’t ask, “What company were you calling at the time?” The people who raised their hands weren’t thinking of a specific instance; they were just thinking broadly about that type of experience. You could, however, call on someone and ask, “Do you prefer when they play music or ads for the company’s products?” Anyone can answer that question. At that point, you are in an actual dialogue with that person. Stage Three engagement is asking them a question where they need to reveal something more personal. “How does that make you feel when you hear those ads?” You’ve warmed up your audience and drawn them in with baby steps. Now you have actual, meaningful audience participation.

5. Use gestures. When we’re speaking in an informal setting, we all use hand gestures; some people use more than others, but we all use them. When we try to rein in our gestures, two things happen that diminish our speaking style. First, we look stiff and unnatural. We look like we are presenting a guarded or cautious version of ourselves; we look less genuine. Second, hand gestures burn up the nervous energy we all have when speaking in front of a large group. That’s good. When we try to minimize our hand gestures, we tie up that nervous energy and it starts to leak out on odd ways, where we start to tap our foot, fidget with our notes or microphone, or tilt our head side to side to emphasize key points. Just let the gestures fly. It’s unlikely they will be too large or distracting. I have coached people on their presentation skills for 26 years. In that time, I have met three people who gestured too much. Everyone else would benefit from using their gestures more freely.

The impact we have as communicators is based on the cumulative effect of many different elements of our delivery. These suggestions alone won’t make you a terrific presenter. They will, however, add to the overall package your present of yourself when speaking to large audiences.

5 things Android needs to fix to become a worthier iOS rival in 2024

jack-wallen

I've been using Android since version 1.x, and I can tell you that Google's mobile operating system has come a long way from its humble (and often stumbling) beginnings . Android remains the most flexible mobile OS on the market. It's also more stable and secure than it's ever been.

A closer comparison of Android to iOS, however, reveals how Google's mobile platform could use a bit of attention (if it ever wants to catch up to Apple's).

Also:  Android 15 unveiled: Here are 8 exciting (or handy) features coming to your phone

You might be thinking, " Android 15 is set to be released soon. Won't that address some of this?" I've tested the betas of the upcoming release and found only one of my issues has been (sort of) addressed. (More on that in a bit.) With that in mind, the following (mostly) targets releases beyond Android 15.

Without further ado, here are five ways that Google could transform Android into an even worthier iOS rival.

1. ChromeOS integration

This is a big one: I'm shocked that Google has done so little to improve the integration between Android and ChromeOS. Both are Google operating systems, yet it's as if they were made by two different companies. Sure, integration is better than it used to be, but so much more could be done.

Imagine something like this: You place your Android phone near your Chromebook and ChromeOS automatically mounts the Android external storage, letting you drag and drop files between the two from within the file browser. Or this: All notifications appear automatically on both devices (without any configuration required).

Contacts? Synced. Apps? Synced. Widgets? Synced. Browser tabs? Synced. Maps/directions? You guessed it. You should be able to start a video chat with someone on ChromeOS and then send it to your phone, so you can walk away from your desk and not miss a beat.

Also:  5 useful features iOS should steal from Android

Essentially, I'm asking for the ability to move seamlessly between the two OSes without having to make the switch manually or configure anything. It should be that simple, and Google could make it so.

2. Better Wear OS integration

As it stands, I have to use two different apps on my phone to view data from my watch. Having to switch between the Pixel Watch app and the Fitbit app is cumbersome (at best). This should be integrated into the OS such that the data appears in the notification screen or a widget. I shouldn't have to search within two separate apps.

Also: The best smartwatches: Expert tested and reviewed

Android/Wear OS integration is clunky and currently, there's no way around that. Google needs to make it possible to view data seamlessly not only on Android but on ChromeOS too. Don't make users have to work for something that should be simple.

3. Smoother graphics and better animations

I've said this for years: Android needs help on the graphics front. It's not that the phones are underpowered; it's the graphics stack on the OS that's lacking. Animations lack smoothness and the graphics are, well, fairly pedestrian. If Google has any plans to catch up with Apple, it must invest some serious time into the graphics and animations.

I'm not saying this aspect of Android is bad, but it certainly lags behind iOS. I want to see better blur and, for the love of aesthetics, something other than a basic white or black background for the Notification Shade and App Drawer. Why not give us something exciting?

Also: Latest Android 15 beta brings important security features to protect you and your data

I will say, however, that the Android 15 betas show an OS capable of smoother animations. Pull down the Notification Shade on both Android 14 and Android 15, and you'll see that Android 15 is considerably smoother.

4. Better marketing in major markets

The last time Google had a decent ad campaign, they used a song by Too Many Zooz . The only downside is that it wasn't everywhere. Meanwhile, iPhone ads are everywhere. On top of that, those ads benefit from one of the best marketing departments on the planet… Apple's.

Although Android might have more global market share, it'll never top iOS in the US or Japan until Google at least attempts to create a halfway decent marketing campaign. Make Android sexy again, Google.

It's not too late for Google to start promoting Android 15. When Android ads do arrive, it's generally too late. Google should do itself a solid and start promoting the upcoming release now.

5. More elegant hardware

In the same vein as the marketing campaign, Google needs to go back to the drawing board with Pixel hardware . These are supposed to be flagship phones, and they often look like design was an afterthought.

Seriously, Google, what are you thinking with these awful Pixel phone designs? Give us something premium-looking, especially given the handsets' premium prices. There are bargain-basement phones that look better than the Pixel designs. Until this changes, the Pixel phone will continue to live in the shadow of the iPhone.

Also: The best Google Pixel phones: Expert tested and reviewed

Given Google's resources, it shouldn't be hard for it to lift Android in such a way that it can compete with iOS. I hope you're listening, Google, because I'm sure many Android fans would agree.

New PlayStation Portal remote player system software update releases tomorrow

New PlayStation Portal remote player system software update releases tomorrow

Sign-in screen support for select public Wi-Fi networks and other enhancements added; popular games on PS Portal also revealed.

mobile operating systems presentation

When we developed the PlayStation Portal remote player, our goal was to bring high-quality console gaming experiences to the palm of your hands, even when you aren’t in front of the TV. We continue to evolve the experience on PS Portal, and we are happy to announce that the latest system software update for our first dedicated remote play device will start rolling out tomorrow – adding a few new user enhancements.

Sign-in screen support for select public Wi-Fi networks

While we recommend PS Portal to be used in your home as you have control over the quality of the Wi-Fi, it can also be used outside of the home in places where a fast and stable Wi-Fi connection is available – and we’ve seen many players take advantage of this. With this new update, PS Portal will also connect to a range of public Wi-Fi networks* that may require additional validation steps beyond entering the network password. This includes Wi-Fi networks with sign-in screens that can often be found in hotels, cafes, and airports. To connect to these public Wi-Fi networks, PS Portal will display a QR code for you to scan with your smartphone or tablet. Once scanned, you’ll be able to use your mobile device’s web browser to complete the additional validation steps on behalf of your PS Portal. As a reminder, PS Portal requires a Wi-Fi connection with at least 5Mbps, and for a better play experience a high-speed connection of at least 15Mbps is recommended.

PS Portal UI screenshot showing a QR code for network authentication

New visual feedback for touchpad areas

The emulated touch pad on PS Portal’s vibrant 8-inch screen is getting an update. We’ve added new visual feedback to the touch pad areas. The new effects will be displayed when using the touch pad areas during remote play.

Display battery level in percentage

You now have the option to display the remaining battery level percentage on the status bar at the top right corner of your screen. To use this feature, open the quick menu, go to [Settings] > [System] > [Battery], and then turn on [Show Battery Percentage].

PS Portal UI screenshot showing remaining battery level in percentage

Since the initial launch of PS Portal last November, we’ve been overwhelmed with the enthusiastic reactions and the variety of ways our community has been enjoying gaming on PS Portal. While Remote Play for PlayStation has been available since the PlayStation 3 generation, we’ve built upon this technology with PS Portal to elevate the Remote Play experience to another level by integrating key features of the DualSense wireless controller with a vibrant 8-inch LCD screen. We’re excited to see that PS Portal has introduced many more gamers to the Remote Play feature on PS5, with over 60 percent of PS Portal owners using the feature for the first time**. What’s more, PS Portal is making it easier for many players to access their games, with the average PS Portal owner’s engagement on PS5 going up within the first 8 weeks of using their PS Portal. We’ve also seen a wide range of games proven to be popular on PS Portal, from single player adventures including God of War Ragnarök, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Astro’s Playroom to multiplayer titles including Fortnite, Rocket League and EA Sports FC 24 – all being some of the most played games on PS Portal within the first 3 months of its launch***.  We’re always grateful to the PlayStation community for embracing our journey as we continue to explore different ways to bring new player experience. Check out the official website to learn more about PS Portal and let us know what you think in the comments!

*To connect to public networks, make sure that the initial setup for your PS Portal is completed. Authentication requires use of another device that can connect to the public network, such as a smartphone. Public networks that operate at 5GHz are not supported. **Internal Data from Nov 2020 – April 2024 ***Internal Data from Nov 15 2023 – Feb 15 2024

It harnesses the power of Apple silicon to understand and create language and images, take action across apps, and draw from personal context to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks. With Private Cloud Compute, Apple sets a new standard for privacy in AI, with the ability to flex and scale computational capacity between on-device processing and larger, server-based models that run on dedicated Apple silicon servers.

“We’re thrilled to introduce a new chapter in Apple innovation. Apple Intelligence will transform what users can do with our products — and what our products can do for our users,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “Our unique approach combines generative AI with a user’s personal context to deliver truly helpful intelligence. And it can access that information in a completely private and secure way to help users do the things that matter most to them. This is AI as only Apple can deliver it, and we can’t wait for users to experience what it can do.”

Apple Intelligence unlocks new ways for users to enhance their writing and communicate more effectively. With brand-new systemwide Writing Tools built into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, users can rewrite, proofread, and summarize text nearly everywhere they write, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.

Whether tidying up class notes, ensuring a blog post reads just right, or making sure an email is perfectly crafted, Writing Tools help users feel more confident in their writing. With Rewrite, Apple Intelligence allows users to choose from different versions of what they have written, adjusting the tone to suit the audience and task at hand. From finessing a cover letter, to adding humor and creativity to a party invitation, Rewrite helps deliver the right words to meet the occasion. Proofread checks grammar, word choice, and sentence structure while also suggesting edits — along with explanations of the edits — that users can review or quickly accept. With Summarize, users can select text and have it recapped in the form of a digestible paragraph, bulleted key points, a table, or a list.

In Mail, staying on top of emails has never been easier. With Priority Messages, a new section at the top of the inbox shows the most urgent emails, like a same-day dinner invitation or boarding pass. Across a user’s inbox, instead of previewing the first few lines of each email, they can see summaries without needing to open a message. For long threads, users can view pertinent details with just a tap. Smart Reply provides suggestions for a quick response, and will identify questions in an email to ensure everything is answered.

Deep understanding of language also extends to Notifications. Priority Notifications appear at the top of the stack to surface what’s most important, and summaries help users scan long or stacked notifications to show key details right on the Lock Screen, such as when a group chat is particularly active. And to help users stay present in what they’re doing, Reduce Interruptions is a new Focus that surfaces only the notifications that might need immediate attention, like a text about an early pickup from daycare.

In the Notes and Phone apps, users can now record, transcribe, and summarize audio. When a recording is initiated while on a call, participants are automatically notified, and once the call ends, Apple Intelligence generates a summary to help recall key points.

Apple Intelligence powers exciting image creation capabilities to help users communicate and express themselves in new ways. With Image Playground, users can create fun images in seconds, choosing from three styles: Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. Image Playground is easy to use and built right into apps including Messages. It’s also available in a dedicated app, perfect for experimenting with different concepts and styles. All images are created on device, giving users the freedom to experiment with as many images as they want.

With Image Playground, users can choose from a range of concepts from categories like themes, costumes, accessories, and places; type a description to define an image; choose someone from their personal photo library to include in their image; and pick their favorite style.

With the Image Playground experience in Messages, users can quickly create fun images for their friends, and even see personalized suggested concepts related to their conversations. For example, if a user is messaging a group about going hiking, they’ll see suggested concepts related to their friends, their destination, and their activity, making image creation even faster and more relevant.

In Notes, users can access Image Playground through the new Image Wand in the Apple Pencil tool palette, making notes more visually engaging. Rough sketches can be turned into delightful images, and users can even select empty space to create an image using context from the surrounding area. Image Playground is also available in apps like Keynote, Freeform, and Pages, as well as in third-party apps that adopt the new Image Playground API.

Taking emoji to an entirely new level, users can create an original Genmoji to express themselves. By simply typing a description, their Genmoji appears, along with additional options. Users can even create Genmoji of friends and family based on their photos. Just like emoji, Genmoji can be added inline to messages, or shared as a sticker or reaction in a Tapback.

Searching for photos and videos becomes even more convenient with Apple Intelligence. Natural language can be used to search for specific photos, such as “Maya skateboarding in a tie-dye shirt,” or “Katie with stickers on her face.” Search in videos also becomes more powerful with the ability to find specific moments in clips so users can go right to the relevant segment. Additionally, the new Clean Up tool can identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo — without accidentally altering the subject.

With Memories, users can create the story they want to see by simply typing a description. Using language and image understanding, Apple Intelligence will pick out the best photos and videos based on the description, craft a storyline with chapters based on themes identified from the photos, and arrange them into a movie with its own narrative arc. Users will even get song suggestions to match their memory from Apple Music. As with all Apple Intelligence features, user photos and videos are kept private on device and are not shared with Apple or anyone else.

Powered by Apple Intelligence, Siri becomes more deeply integrated into the system experience. With richer language-understanding capabilities, Siri is more natural, more contextually relevant, and more personal, with the ability to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks. It can follow along if users stumble over words and maintain context from one request to the next. Additionally, users can type to Siri, and switch between text and voice to communicate with Siri in whatever way feels right for the moment. Siri also has a brand-new design with an elegant glowing light that wraps around the edge of the screen when Siri is active.

Siri can now give users device support everywhere they go, and answer thousands of questions about how to do something on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Users can learn everything from how to schedule an email in the Mail app, to how to switch from Light to Dark Mode.

With onscreen awareness, Siri will be able to understand and take action with users’ content in more apps over time. For example, if a friend texts a user their new address in Messages, the receiver can say, “Add this address to his contact card.”

With Apple Intelligence, Siri will be able to take hundreds of new actions in and across Apple and third-party apps. For example, a user could say, “Bring up that article about cicadas from my Reading List,” or “Send the photos from the barbecue on Saturday to Malia,” and Siri will take care of it.

Siri will be able to deliver intelligence that’s tailored to the user and their on-device information. For example, a user can say, “Play that podcast that Jamie recommended,” and Siri will locate and play the episode, without the user having to remember whether it was mentioned in a text or an email. Or they could ask, “When is Mom’s flight landing?” and Siri will find the flight details and cross-reference them with real-time flight tracking to give an arrival time.

To be truly helpful, Apple Intelligence relies on understanding deep personal context while also protecting user privacy. A cornerstone of Apple Intelligence is on-device processing, and many of the models that power it run entirely on device. To run more complex requests that require more processing power, Private Cloud Compute extends the privacy and security of Apple devices into the cloud to unlock even more intelligence.

With Private Cloud Compute, Apple Intelligence can flex and scale its computational capacity and draw on larger, server-based models for more complex requests. These models run on servers powered by Apple silicon, providing a foundation that allows Apple to ensure that data is never retained or exposed.

Independent experts can inspect the code that runs on Apple silicon servers to verify privacy, and Private Cloud Compute cryptographically ensures that iPhone, iPad, and Mac do not talk to a server unless its software has been publicly logged for inspection. Apple Intelligence with Private Cloud Compute sets a new standard for privacy in AI, unlocking intelligence users can trust.

Apple is integrating ChatGPT access into experiences within iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, allowing users to access its expertise — as well as its image- and document-understanding capabilities — without needing to jump between tools.

Siri can tap into ChatGPT’s expertise when helpful. Users are asked before any questions are sent to ChatGPT, along with any documents or photos, and Siri then presents the answer directly.

Additionally, ChatGPT will be available in Apple’s systemwide Writing Tools, which help users generate content for anything they are writing about. With Compose, users can also access ChatGPT image tools to generate images in a wide variety of styles to complement what they are writing.

Privacy protections are built in for users who access ChatGPT — their IP addresses are obscured, and OpenAI won’t store requests. ChatGPT’s data-use policies apply for users who choose to connect their account.

ChatGPT will come to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia later this year, powered by GPT-4o. Users can access it for free without creating an account, and ChatGPT subscribers can connect their accounts and access paid features right from these experiences.

Availability

Apple Intelligence is free for users, and will be available in beta as part of iOS 18 , iPadOS 18 , and macOS Sequoia  this fall in U.S. English. Some features, software platforms, and additional languages will come over the course of the next year. Apple Intelligence will be available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac with M1 and later, with Siri and device language set to U.S. English.
