She took admission in Aeronautical engineering.

Most Noteworthy is that she was the only girl student in the entire batch. This signifies that she always took a different path from others and was a leader. Furthermore, after completing her graduation she went abroad for further studies.

She took admission at Texas University in America. And completed her post-graduation from there. To get a doctorate degree she joined Colorado University. After getting the doctorate degree she began her career in NASA’s Ames Research Centre.

After completing her real career started. In 1994 she became a space passenger in NASA. Further one year later she became a member of space zone too. Kalpana always had a dream of landing on the moon. And as a result of her hard work and dedication, she reached such heights.

Kalpana’s first space mission was on November 19, 1994. She was a part of 6 member crew on space shuttle Columbia Flight STS-87. Furthermore, she lived for around 375 hours and traveled over 6.5 million miles in space. But when she was returning to Earth the space shuttle disintegrated. Thus the lives of all the 7 crew members ended which Kalpana a part was of. Therefore her career ended sooner than expected.

She was born on 17th March, 1 962 in Karnal. She did her B.E. in Aeronautical Engineering at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh in 1982. She finished her Masters from University of Texas in 1984. She did another masters and then a Ph.D from University of Colorado.

In 1988, she started working at NASA Ames Research Centre as Vice-President of Overset Methods. She researched on fluid dynamics of landing and take-off.

She held Flight Instructor and Pilot certifications also. She became a US citizen in 1991. So, she applied for NASA Astronaut Corps. She joined in 1995 and was selected for her first flight in 1996. In the weightlessness of space, she said :

“You are just your intelligence.”

She had covered 10.67 million km, which was equivalent to travelling around the Earth, 252 times. Her first space mission commenced on 19th November, 1997, as part of a six member crew aboard space shuttle Columbia. In this mission, she spent 372 hoars in space. She was assigned the task of deploying the Spartan Satellite.

After finishing this project, she assumed technical duties in the space station. Her work was lauded by her peers. In 2000, she was selected for her second flight, as part of the crew of STS 107. 16th January 2003, she and other members boarded the flight. She conducted some experiments studying Earth and space science, technology development and astronaut safety and health. Unfortunately, the shuttle disintegrated over Texas, while re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere on 1st February, 2003, with the loss of all seven members.

She was posthumously awarded Congressional Space Medal of Honour, NASA Space Flight Medal and Distinguished Service Medal. The Kalpana Chawla Outstanding Recent Alumni Award at University of Colorado, was renamed after her. An asteroid, a hill peak on Mars, an Indian series of satellites, a NASA supercomputer are all named after her. Government of Haryana established Kalpana Chawla Planetarium at Kurukshetra. A medical college was named after her and opened in her birthplace in 2013. She died young, and left an indelible imprint on the minds of aspiring youngsters to live a life of quality. Her spirit encourages us to take risks and not be afraid of the challenges. She was a gem the vacuum created by her death can never be filled. As her brother said:

Kalpana started her school education at Tagore Baal Niketan Senior Secondary School, Karnal. She was a self-motivated girl inspired to fly by a local flying club. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from Punjab Technical College in India in 1982. Following her Bachelor’s degree , she pursued a Master’s in Aeronautical Technology from the University of Texas at Arlington . She later completed her PhD in Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder in 1988.

After completing her academics, she started rendering her powered-lift computational fluid dynamics services at Ames Research Center at NASA. Later, in 1993, she joined Overset Methods Inc., Los Altos, California, as Vice President and Research Scientist. Here, she was a responsible authority for aerodynamic optimization. In 1994, her career journey took a turn, and she joined NASA and reported to Johnson Space Center on 15 March as an astronaut candidate in the 15th Group of Astronauts.

Her childhood dream of launching into space was successfully fulfilled in 1997 when she became one of the important members of six astronauts on the Space Shuttle Columbia mission STS-87. As her first space mission, she finished 252 orbits of the Earth in 15 days and 16 hours, and with this, she became the first Indian woman to enter space.

With the grand mission success of STS-87, Kalpana Chawla was again selected for a second space mission in the year 2000 as a leader of team STS-107. After several delays, the mission was relaunched in 2003.

Of the 16-day trip, 80 trials were done. The space flight completed more than 80 trials, but unfortunately, while launching, the briefcase-sized piece of insulation broke off, severely harming the shuttle’s wing’s thermal defence system. Thus, when the space shuttle entered the atmosphere, the barrier-shielded sheet heated and blasted due to rushed heated gas.

All of the seven crew members were sadly killed on the space shuttle journey, including Kalpana Chawla, Rick Husband, Laurel Clark, Ilan Ramon, David Brown, William McCool, and Michael Anderson.

Her first opportunity to fly in space arrived in November 1997, aboard the space shuttle Columbia on flight STS-87. The shuttle successfully made 252 orbits of the Earth in just over two weeks. The satellite which studied the outer layer of the Sun malfunctioned due to which two other astronauts had to perform a spacewalk to recapture it.

In 2000, she was selected for second flight as part of the crew of STS-107. This mission was delayed several times because of a technical problem but finally got approval and was launched in 2003. The team completed more than eighty experiments over the 16-day flight. While returning to Earth on February 1, 2003, the space shuttle insulation had broken off and damaged the thermal protection system. As the shuttle passed the atmosphere, hot gas entered inside, causing a break-up in the wing. The unstable shuttle could not handle it and broke up killing the crew before plunging into the ground.

This accident was the second disaster following the 1986 explosion of the shuttle challenger. Along with her, the other ones who died were Pilot William C McCool, Payload Commander Michael P. Anderson, Payload Specialist Ilan Ramon, the first Israeli astronaut, mission specialist David M. Brown and Laurel B. Clark and Commander Rick D. after the disaster; flight operations were called off and suspended for two years. She worked for 30 days, 14 nights, and 54 minutes in space.

Life story of Kalpana Chawla

Kalpana Chawla became the first Indian-born woman to go to space in 1997. Six years later, on February 1, 2003, Chawla died when the space shuttle Columbia broke up on re-entry into Earth's atmosphere, killing all seven astronauts on board.

Chawla's legacy has lived on, however. In particular, her talent and hard work have inspired young people in India and around Earth to consider careers in spaceflight.

Born in Karnal, India, on March 17, 1962, to parents Banarasi Lal Chawla and Sanjyothi Chawla, Kalpana Chawla was the youngest of four children.

Until she started school, Chawla hadn't been formally named. Her parents called her Montu, but Chawla picked her own name from a selection when she entered education. The name Kalpana means "idea" or "imagination." Her full name is pronounced CULL-pah-na CHAU-la , though she often went by the nickname K.C.

As a child, Chawla developed an interest in flying after first seeing a plane at around the age of three. She spent days with her father visiting her local flying club with her father and showed an interest in aviation while at school.

During her earlier education in India, Chawla attended Tagore Baal Niketan Senior Secondary School, Karnal.

Chawla obtained a degree in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College. When selecting the course, professors tried to dissuade her, as there were limited opportunities for girls in India following this career path. However, Chawla was adamant that this was the subject for her.

After completing her engineering degree in India, Chawla immigrated to the United States in the 1980s and became a naturalized citizen to continue her studies. She obtained her masters degree from the University of Texas and earned a doctorate in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado in 1988.

Chawla began working at NASA's Ames Research Center the same year, working on powered-lift computational fluid dynamics. In particular, her work focused on understanding how air flows around an aircraft during flight and incorporating computers into the work.

Becoming an astronaut

In 1994, Chawla was selected as an astronaut candidate. After a year of training, she became a crew representative for the Astronaut Office EVA/Robotics and Computer Branches, where she worked with Robotic Situational Awareness Displays and tested software for the space shuttles.

Chawla felt passionately about providing science education opportunities for young girls in India, and during her time as an astronaut, NASA invited Chawla's secondary school to take part in their Summer Space Experience Program. Each year from 1998, the school sent two girls to the Foundation for International Space Education's United Space School in Houston and Chawla would invite them into her home for an Indian dinner.

Chawla's first flight came in November 1997, aboard the space shuttle Columbia on flight STS-87 . The shuttle made 252 orbits of the Earth in just over two weeks. Chawla was a mission specialist and prime robotic arm operator for the flight; the other astronauts on board were Kevin Kregel, Steven Linsey, Winston Scott, Takao Doi and Leonid Kadenyuk.

The shuttle carried a number of experiments, including projects studying plant reproduction in microgravity and how materials behave in space.

In addition, Chawla used the robotic arm to deploy a satellite called SPARTAN 201, which was meant to study the outer layer of the sun , called the corona. However, the satellite malfunctioned and could not control its position upon deployment, according to NASA . Two other astronauts from the mission had to perform a spacewalk to recapture the satellite and the instrument never conducted any research.

After her first flight, Chawla said, "When you look at the stars and the galaxy, you feel that you are not just from any particular piece of land, but from the solar system."

The Columbia disaster

In 2000, Chawla was selected for her second voyage into space, to serve as a mission specialist on STS-107 . The mission was delayed several times before finally launching on Jan. 16, 2003.

During the 16-day flight, the crew completed more than 80 experiments, working a strenuous shift schedule to ensure that the research never stopped, according to NASA . Among other work, the STS-107 crew tested technology that NASA wanted to recycle water on the young International Space Station. Experiments developed by elementary school students from around the world analyzed how insects and fish respond to spaceflight; another suite of experiments studied the sun.

In particular, the flight carried a large pressurized chamber called the Spacehab research module inside the shuttle's payload bay. The experiments completed in the Spacehab module focused on biological and health sciences.

Between her two missions, Chawla logged 30 days, 14 hours, and 54 minutes in space.

On the morning of Feb. 1, 2003, the space shuttle returned to Earth, intending to land at Kennedy Space Center . But as the shuttle passed through Earth's atmosphere, hot gas streamed into the shuttle's wing where a briefcase-sized piece of insulation had broken off during launch and damaged the thermal protection system, the shield that protects it from heat during re-entry.

The unstable craft rolled and bucked, pitching the astronauts about. Less than a minute passed before the ship depressurized, killing the crew . Also on board were Rick Husband, Laurel Clark, Ilan Ramon, David Brown, William McCool and Michael Anderson.

The shuttle broke up over Texas and Louisiana before plunging into the ground. The accident was the second major disaster for the space shuttle program, following the 1986 explosion of the shuttle Challenger .

NASA and independent groups both investigated the Columbia disaster in hopes of preventing another such tragedy. Examples include the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (2003) and NASA's Columbia Crew Survival Investigation Report (released in 2008).

Each year, NASA marks the loss of the Columbia crew, as well as the crews of the Challenger space shuttle and Apollo 1, on the last Thursday of January; the fatal missions are also regularly referenced when NASA personnel discuss the importance of prioritizing safety in human spaceflight.

No NASA mission has been fatal since the Columbia disaster.

Shortly after the Columbia disaster, scientists named seven asteroids after each crewmember as a "celestial memorial." To mark the first anniversary of the disaster, NASA also named seven hills on Mars for the lost crew.

The University of Texas dedicated a Kalpana Chawla memorial at the Arlington College of Engineering in 2010. At the time of its opening, the display included a flight suit, photographs, information about Chawla's life, and a flag that was flown over the Johnson Space Center during a memorial for the Columbia astronauts.

In October 2020, a commercial cargo spacecraft named after Chawla launched to the International Space Station (ISS). Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus capsule was named the S.S. Kalpana Chawla, as it is the company’s policy to dedicate their Cygnus capsules to someone who has played a pivotal role in human spaceflight.

"Chawla was selected in honor of her prominent place in history as the first woman of Indian descent to go to space," Northrop Grumman officials wrote in a statement .

Additional resources and reading

Chawla's widower, Jean-Pierre Harrison, wrote a biography called " The Edge of Time ," which he published in 2011. In addition, several documentaries have been produced about the Columbia crew, including " Astronaut Diaries: Remembering the Columbia Shuttle Crew " (2005), and one that focused on astronaut Ilan Ramon, called " Space Shuttle Columbia: Mission of Hope " (2013).

Kalpana Chawla was born in Karnal town in Haryana on 1 July 1961.

Kalpana Chawla was a great dreamer. She always dreamt of flying like a bird in space and observing the elegant shape of the planet earth right up from there. Kalpana Chawla was also very fond of dancing. She learned Bharat Natyam between 1992 and 1994 at the San Jose-based Abhinaya Dance Company. Thereafter, she joined NASA and was selected from 2,962 applicants for the space programs.

Kalpana Chawla’s application was accepted by NASA in December 1994, and thereafter she began her training in the Johnson Space Centre. In the year 1997, she took her first flight in space and said that she felt as if everything was racing behind her. The moon too raced away from her and soon become invisible. Thus, everything would strike for some time and thereafter get lost from sight.

It was a strange phenomenon for Kalpana Chawla. She had never had seen things in such a wonderful way ever before. It was the first time when she had observed the magnificent creations of God so closely. It was as if her all dreams have turned to reality. At the young age of 41, she had circled around the earth 252 times and had completed 760 hours in space.

Unfortunately, this shining star of space died on 1 February 2003, when the space shuttle Columbia exploded with a big bang before landing on the earth. The whole world was shocked at the sudden death of this brave lady of space. Millions of her fans paid tributes to her and wished that almighty God shall grant peace to her soul.

Kalpana Chawla may not be among us today, but her name shall forever shine in the realm of space.

She was incredibly talented and eventually, she got a call from NASA to join its space program. She had been selected out of 2,982 applicants.

Her career took off when she joined NASA Research Centre, after which she became the Vice-President of Overseas Methods Altos, California in 1993. In 1995 she was selected as a space candidate in the 15th group of astronauts at Johnson Space Centre.

Chawla first went into space in 1997 and after her flight, in an interview she said. “When you are up there, you feel you are not from any particular piece of land but are a resident of the Milky Way”.

She lived with her husband in America and overcame all barriers to achieve her dream of becoming an astronaut. She was proud to be an Indian.

Chawla was always open to trying new and challenging things in life. She was an inspiration to the millions of students not only in India but in America also.

She had great taste in music and this can be gauged from the numerous CD collections she took with her aboard Columbia which included CDs of Pt. Ravi Shankar, Elton John, and others.

She died on Feb. 1, 2003, along with six other gauged on the space shuttle Columbia, which exploded 200,000 feet above the ground in Texas, the U.S. By the last voyage she had clocked 760 hours in space and circled the globe 252 times.

Kalpana will be equally remembered by the citizens of India, her native country, and the U.S.A., her adopted country for her zeal, ambition, and adventurous spirit.

Seeing her competence as an astronaut, she was given a call from NASA to come to the space program from among 2962 applicants. February 1, 2003, was the day when the gloom overtook everything at various Science institutions the world over. The reason the U.S. space shuttle Columbia broke up in the air on its re-entry into the earth’s atmosphere. In a spur of the moment, the whole team of scientists with the spacecraft was blown into pieces. Among them was our own Kalpana Chawla who was on that mission as the mission specialist. Born on January 6, 1967, at Karnal in India, Kalpana completed her studies up to the University level in India and went to the U.S.A. for higher studies. She had the ambition to become a pilot and fly high in the sky. In the U.S.A., Kalpana acquired her Ph.D. and joined NASA as a space scientist.

This brilliant Indian-American lady proved once again that the Indian talent lags behind no other people of the world. A couple of years back, she was sent into space on a mission that was a complete success in all respects. She had completed her task successfully and that led to the authorities appointing her as the mission specialist to the campaign at the beginning of the year 2003. All went well and the space shuttle was on its way back to the earth, when, just 16 minutes away from home, all was lost in a bang. As the news was reported the same morning, everyone felt deeply grieved over the loss of Kalpana which was very much our own. It was just like a family mourns the loss of its child. Kalpana is lost now, but the country that produced her still exists, and let us takes a pledge that each of us will prove as good as Kalpana and shall our motherland be proud in the same way she did. That will be the most appropriate tribute to that great soul that departed all of a sudden.
