Western Sydney University , formerly the University of Western Sydney , is an Australian multi-campus university in the Greater Western region of Sydney. It is a provider of undergraduate, postgraduate and higher research degrees with campuses in Bankstown, Blacktown, Campbelltown, Hawkesbury, Parramatta, and Penrith. It is currently ranked in the top 400 in the world in the 2014 QS World University Rankings and 19th in Australia in 2015.
The university in its current form was founded in 1989 under the terms of the University of Western Sydney Act, 1988, which created a federated network university with an amalgamation between two trade schools – Nepean College of Advanced Education and Hawkesbury Agricultural College. The Macarthur Institute of Higher Education was incorporated into the university in 1989, and in 2001 the University of Western Sydney was restructured as a single multi-campus university rather than as a federation. In 2015, the university underwent a rebranding which resulted in a change in name from the University of Western Sydney to Western Sydney University.

The Bachelor of Nursing - WSU Online will conduct compulsory on-campus residential intensives for each Professional Practice Experience subject.
The Professional Practice Experience is the foundation for student learning in the course. It consists of two major learning contexts for students: professional practice and simulation. Professional practice in the health care sector may take place in any level of the health service appropriate to the focus for the specific Professional Practice Experience unit, for example aged care facilities, hospitals, General Practitioner practices, community health teams. This environment is essential for providing students complexity of the nursing experience, the ability to apply learning in situations involving ill persons, and socialises students into the work domain.
Simulation is a teaching and learning strategy where aspects of the professional practice environment, such as a hospital ward or patient, are artificially created on campus to enable students to learn in a safe, non-threatening environment. Clinical Practice Subjects, simulated professional practice environments, will be used to allow students to undertake learning activities related to all core nursing skills such as administering medications and monitoring a patient’s condition. The School has a wide range of simulation equipment and dedicated high fidelity simulation rooms on each campus.
The percentage of time spent by students in each context will vary depending on the stage of the student in the program, the theoretical knowledge already acquired and the stage of competency development. For example at the beginning of the program more hours will be spent in the simulation context than in the health care sector. As the program progresses there is a scaling up of hours spent in the health care sector with fewer hours being spent in the simulation context. In the final session of third year a significant proportion of knowledge and skills consolidation will occur primarily in a clinical practice environment.
If you commenced in Trimester 3 2023 or later please refer to the Sequence Current tabs for details.

In addition, students complete their statistics sequence and may take selected electives or engage in research or teaching practicum. Students complete the preliminary exam at the end of the first year of full-time study and the end of two years of part-time study.
Students who enter the PhD program with a BSN can earn an MS in Nursing Science during the program following successful completion of the first year of the PhD program and the preliminary examination.
After the first year of full-time study and the first two years of part-time study, courses and other scholarly activities are determined by you and your supervisory committee to comprise your individual program of study. The supervisory chair is a School of Nursing graduate faculty member whose research approach, interest, or research methods align with your proposed dissertation project.
You and your chair complete the supervisory committee by selecting faculty members from the School of Nursing, the UW at large, and other appropriate experts outside the University. This committee approves your program of study and guides you through the general examinations, dissertation research, and final defense.

Recently crowned Miss Nepal International 2024, Western Sydney University nursing graduate Karuna Rawat is determined to give back to her community – using her achievement as a powerful platform to highlight global health issues.
Karuna has always been interested in helping people and improving health and wellbeing. It’s what inspired her to move from Nepal to Australia in 2018 as an international student to pursue a nursing degree at the University.
Karuna said she was attracted to Australia’s reputation for high-quality education and advanced healthcare.
“I have always been passionate about nursing, driven by a desire to make a difference in people’s lives, especially in areas like mental health and substance abuse,” Karuna said.
“Western Sydney University was the perfect choice for me because of its strong nursing program and focus on practical experience. During my studies, I worked part-time to gain hands-on experience in the healthcare field, which has been invaluable in my career.”
During her time as a student Karuna served as Vice-President of the Nepali Students at Western Sydney University club, which she said added to her overall university experience.
After graduating in 2021, she worked across a range of hospitals in the Sydney area and regional New South Wales as a registered nurse in various roles, primarily focusing on mental health and drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
“My experience at the University was fantastic, with clinical placements being a highlight, allowing me to apply what I learned in real-world settings,” she said.
“Being part of the Nepalese club at the University also provided me with significant support, helping me connect with a community that shared my cultural background.”
Karuna returned to Nepal, where she was recently crowned Miss Nepal International 2024.
“Returning to Nepal has been a heartfelt experience, reconnecting me with my roots and allowing me to contribute to my community,” she said.
“Competing in pageants has been a rewarding experience, allowing me to represent my culture and use the platform to raise awareness about issues I care deeply about.
“Winning was an amazing feeling, and I’m proud to represent my community while taking on the responsibilities that come with the title.”
Preparing next to represent Nepal at the Miss International pageant, Karuna is taking the opportunity to promote the need for improved health outcomes in her country and to drive change.
Founding the Nurturing Minds project, she is a passionate advocate for mental health awareness among adolescents and children in Nepal.
“During my reigning period, my foremost focus will be on giving my absolute best at Miss International in Japan, representing Nepal with pride and grace,” Karuna said.
“Beyond the competition, I am dedicated to working on meaningful projects that promote health and wellbeing, especially in communities that need it most.
“I believe in using this platform not just for myself, but to make a tangible difference in the lives of others, empowering them to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.”
