Harpercollins publishers acquires global publishing rights to the authorized biography of ratan n. tata by dr. thomas mathew.

HarperCollins today announced that it has acquired rights to publish the authorized biography of legendary business figure Ratan N. Tata, who is counted among the most influential and inspirational leaders in the world. Ratan N. Tata: The Authorized Biography by Dr. Thomas Mathew will be published globally by HarperCollins in all formats in November 2022.

Udayan Mitra at HarperCollins India acquired world rights in all languages from Anish Chandy at Labyrinth Literary Agency. The book will be published by HarperCollins India in English and the principal Indian languages, by HarperCollins Leadership in the US and by William Collins in the UK.

Ratan Tata’s story is that of a man who overcame extraordinary travails and whose compassion took priority over business compulsions, uniquely achieving both goals. As the head of India’s oldest and largest business house, his story also encapsulates the narrative of India’s growing ambitions on the world stage and rising clout in the last few decades.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dr. Thomas Mathew (https://thomasmathew.com) is a retired career bureaucrat belonging to the 1983 batch of the Indian Administrative Service. With a passion for writing, he has several publications to his credit, including four books – In Search of Congruence: India-US Relations under the Obama Administration (edited and contributed to its lead chapter), The Winged Wonders of Rashtrapati Bhavan and Abode Under the Dome. He regularly writes opinion pieces for leading dailies.

Dr. Mathew holds a PhD degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and is a Bachelor of Law from Delhi University. He has worked in key roles in the Ministries of Finance, Defence and Industry, amongst others. He subsequently served as Additional Secretary to President of India Pranab Mukherjee.

Dr. Mathew met Ratan Tata in a professional capacity about three decades ago. They continued their interactions due to their shared interests. In 2018, Dr. Mathew began work on the biography of Ratan Tata.

Now retired, he serves on the board of several companies and is consulted on corporate matters. He lives in Gurugram, pursuing his passion of writing, nature conservation and photography.

WHO IS DR THOMAS MATHEW?

Dr Thomas Mathew is a 1983-batch IAS officer who served as Additional Secretary to Former President of India Late Pranab Mukherjee. Dr Mathew also worked in key roles in the Ministries of Finance, Defence and Industry, amongst others. With a passion for writing, he has several books to his name. They are: In search of Congruence: India US Relation under the Obama Administration , The Winged Wonders of Rashtrapati Bhawan and Abode under the Dome .

“Over the last four decades, I have had the opportunity to closely observe and interact with the Indian corporate ecosystem and in the later years with Mr Ratan Tata and the Tata Group, in particular. So, when I got the opportunity to write the story of the man whose name instantly evokes intense admiration, bordering on adulation, among people across the world, I had no doubt that it would be far and away an exciting yet daunting task,” Dr Thomas Mathew has written in his website.

He goes on to say that as part of the research, he benefitted from unprecedented access to the records of the conglomerate, the trusts that control it as well as Mr Tata’s personal documents, letters and journals. “I also enjoyed virtually unfettered access to Mr Tata himself, who narrated his life story in a tell-all fashion. The research also took me across continents following Ratan Tata’s journey, interviewing those who were involved in it, those who influenced him and those whose lives he had touched,” he adds.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Dr Mathew started working on this book in the year 2018 after his professional meet with Ratan Tata three decades ago.

Harper Collins has acquired the right to publish the authorised biography. Udayan Mitra at HarperCollins India acquired world rights in all languages from Anish Chandy at Labyrinth Literary Agency. The book will be published by HarperCollins India in English and the principal Indian languages, by HarperCollins Leadership in the US, and by William Collins in the UK.

The comprehensive biography includes 84-year-old Ratan Tata’s childhood, his professional and private life, college years, his return to Indian and early tenure with the Tata Group. The wonderful book will also include the tales of unreported details about events such as Tata’s Nano project, etc.

As the head of India’s oldest and largest business house, the biography also includes the narratives of India’s growing ambition on world stage in the last few decades.

An iconic Indian industrialist, Ratan Tata, has been a stalwart of the Indian business ecosystem. Born in Mumbai in the famed Tata family, he served as the chairman of Tata Sons and of the Tata Group (from 1990 to 2012, and 201617. He was instrumental in many of the pivotal acquisitions (Tetley, Jaguar Land Rover, Corus, Air India) that ushered an era of modernity and competitiveness in this revered business group.

A.K. Gandhi, born in Meerut (U.P.), took retirement from the Indian Air Force in 1995 at a young age and engaged himself as full-time freelance writer and translator. He has written a number of book—his areas of interest being history, social study and grammar, which have been published by prestigious publications. He has written several books for academic purposes, which are taught in several CBSE-medium schools across the country. His articles keep appearing in different newspapers and magazines, including the Janvani and Readers’ Digest, as he writes off and on in them. About the Author

Peter Casey is the founder and executive chairman of Claddagh Resources, a global recruitment and search business that places high-level executives with many of the world's Fortune 500 companies. Having established successful business interests in Australia and Ireland, Peter set up Claddagh Resources in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1995. Claddagh currently operates across four continents. Peter was named by Irish America magazine as one of the leading Irish-American businessmen of 2007. He has had a wide portfolio of business interests, including commercial, residential and agricultural property in Ireland. Peter is also an accomplished writer and a political and business commentator, with articles published regularly in Ireland and the United States. Peter was a panellist for several years on the Irish television programme Dragons' Den . In 2018, Peter stood as an independent candidate for the Presidency of Ireland. He was runner up securing 23.4% of the vote. Peter lives in Atlanta with his wife, Helen, and their five children, and divides his time between the States and his family home in Derry, Northern Ireland. Outside work Peter is a passionate golfer and swimmer.
