Hyderabad: The much-awaited Vishnu Manchu's 'Ginna' hit the screens on 21 October. Featuring Paayal Rajput and Sunny Leone, the film's trailer promised a good horror comedy. Let's see whether the film worked at the box office.

The plot revolves around Ginna (Vishnu Manchu) who rents a tent house. But Ginna will be stuck with huge debts. Meanwhile, his childhood friend Renuka (Sunny Leone), who is very rich, comes back to India and wants to marry Ginna. But Ginna loves Swathi(Payal Rajput), and he, along with his friends, plans to cheat Renuka in the name of love and loot her money. What happens next forms the crux of the film.

Vishnu rocks as usual as comedy films are his cup of tea. Right from 'Dhee', he has proven that he is a pro in comedy timing and he followed the same in 'Ginna' as well. His dance is another surprise as he is amazing. Sunny Leone gets a major role and she is impressive. Payal Rajput looks good as the village belle. Senior actors Naresh and Suresh are decent in their roles. Chammak Chandra steals the show with his comedy. Vennela Kishore is also superb and he is a major plus point for the second half.

Coming to the technical aspects, writer Kona Venkat made sure the film is filled with fun elements. Anup Rubens' music is impressive and so is the BGM. The choreography and the production design are decent. Dialogues are funny, especially those written for Kishore and Chammak Chandra.

Director Suryaah has done a good job. Though the plot is old, the way the director has incorporated comedy without boring the audience is the best part.

The way the comedy track and horror elements have been handled is appreciable. Chammak Chandra's fun interactions with Sunny Leone have been designed well. The fun, glamor, and thrills in the second half are interesting. The Interval block establishes good interest for the second half.

The initial hour of the film looks very routine. The film starts on a slow note and takes time to hit the main plot. The actual story is narrated only after the interval. The climax feels rushed and predictable once the major twist is revealed.

On the whole, 'Ginna' is a decent horror comedy. If you ignore the predictable plot, neat comedy and passable thrills will provide you with a decent watch this holiday weekend.

Ginna Movie Review

2H 16M   |     |   Oct 21 2022

Cast - Vishnu Manchu, Payal Rajput, Sunny Leone, Vennela Kishore

Director - Eeshaan Suryaah

Producer - Vishnu Manchu

Banner - AVA Entertainment

Music - Anup Rubens

Vishnu Manchu hasn’t had a success since Denikaina Ready. The Dhee actor teams up with Kona Venkat for a comic caper ‘Ginna’ helmed by debutante Eeshaan Suryaah. Will Vishnu score success with the film and break the jinx. Without further due, let’s check out.

Plot: Gali Nageswara Rao alias Ginna (Vishnu) runs a tenthouse that runs into losses since it’s jinxed. Ginna has to repay his debts to avoid marrying the lender’s sister. He is in love with childhood friend Swathi (Payal Rajput). Return of their other childhood friend Renuka (Sunny Leone) from the US changes the equations. Who’s Renuka and what’s her motto? Will Ginna marry Renuka or Swathi?

Performances

Vishnu Manchu as Ginna delivers what is expected from him. It is a tailor-made role for Vishnu who does act with ease. He shines in the comic scenes. His combination scenes with Payal and Sunny are good. Romantic scenes are also enticing. Payal is good as village belle Swathi. She has good screen presence, but her role has limited scope to do fireworks. Sunny takes the centrestage as the film revolves around her character. She does justice for her role. Comedian Saddam Hussein as Pandu evokes laughs. He is good as the hero’s friend. Vennela Kishore and Chammak Chandra’s comedy also worked. Divi Vadthya is the surprise element in the film. Comedian Sunil is seen in a blink-and-miss cameo. Sathyam Rajesh is also confined to a brief role. The film has a slew of actors including Raghubabu, Naresh, Suresh, Gautam Raju, Annapurnamma.

Technicalities

Story and screenplay of Ginna has the scope to work well with the masses. It is indeed formulaic but it very much serves the purpose. The commercial aspects and out-and-out humour. First-time director Suryaah did his job well. Nowhere in the film did it look like a first-time directorial. Anup Rubens music elevates the scenes. Songs are good with a nice dose of glamour. They are placed well. The run-time is short and doesn’t bore the viewers.

Songs & Comedy Scenes

Story & Screenplay

Thumbs Down

Some Portions In Second-Half

Predictable Elements

Comedy is Vishnu’s forte. He has delivered Dhee and Denikaina Ready in the past. After a longtime, he finally got into what he is good at. He doesn’t disappoint. Thanks to the story and screenplay which did the magic. The treatment is hilarious without deviating from the story. The comedy elements have worked well. Dialogues are well-written and youth centric. They tickle the funnybones of audiences.

The story of Ginna is set in Rangampet village near Tirupati. It goes on a familiar path, but it takes off well. The initial scenes are refreshing. It establishes the characters and the atmosphere preparing us for what the film is going to be. But it is the pre-interval twist that totally changes the course of the film. It sustains the curiosity over the film well. Screenplay of the film penned by Mohan Babu has indeed worked for Ginna.

Plot-wise, Ginna has close resemblance with Chandramukhi. But the horror element from Chandramukhi is replaced with the crime thriller giving a psychological trauma spin. It was a smart move and it worked in Ginna’s favour. The treatment of the film is what turned totally in the film’s flavour. The early second-half has some routine portions, but they are overshadowed by the following scenes that dive into the story. Barring some predictable scenes, Ginna has its moments that appeal. Songs are good. Friendship song sung by Vishnu’s daughters Ariaana and Viviana is emotionally touching.

Go without any expectations, the film will surely surprise you and entertain you. Vishnu is back to the form and he breaks the jinx with Ginna. It’s a time-pass entertainer.

Verdict:  Timepass Entertainer

Ginna Review

What's Behind

Manchu Vishnu after a long hibernation is coming to treat movie lovers with a hilarious horror entertainer Ginna. He is romancing Sunny Leone and Payal Rajput in the film directed by Eeshan Suryaa. Ginna will be screened on OTT once its finishes its theatrical run. Let us find out whether Manchu Vishnu is successful in his attempts to entertain movie lovers.

Story Review

Ginna's story is all about a youngster Ginna and how he overcomes his problems in his personal and professional life. Gali Nageswara Rao aka Ginna (Manchu Vishnu) runs a tent house in his village and he has a dream of becoming the Village President. But his debts prevent him from doing so. How Ginna manages to come out of the problems, and how it affects his relations with his childhood friends Swathi (Payal Rajput), Swathi (Sunny Leone), Vennela Kishore (Mysore Babji), and what role does Village President Tippeswara Rao (Raghu Babu), Veerasawy (Naresh), Rakesh Master (Chammak Chandra) form the crux of the story.

Artists, Technicians Review

Story of Ginna provided by Kona Venkat though routine is high on humor. Director Eeshan Suryaah did full justice to the story with his screenplay and direction. The narration starts on a predictable note and goes in a slow manner. After a few romantic and hilarious scenes, the first half ends with an interesting interval twist which viewers never expect. The second half picks up the pace and with hilarious and horror elements, interest levels increases among viewers. But into the pre-climax and climax, everything turns out to be routine.

Manchu Vishnu delighted all his fans by appearing on the screen after a long time. He worked hard and performed extremely well. He did full justice to his role and showed the right kind of expression and emotions. He excelled in romantic scenes and enacted high-octane stunts with ease. His dialogue delivery is good. His chemistry between Payal Rajput and Sunny Leone attracts the masses.

Sunny Leone turned redhot on the screen. She set the screens on fire with her glamor treat. Apart from it, the surprise element associated with her role drives viewers crazy. Payal Rajput performed a traditional role and she did a good job. Payal Rajput toned down her glamor treat compared to Sunny Leone.

Vennela Kishore and Chammak Chandra created a laughing riot with their scenes on the screen. Naresh, Sunil, Suresh, Raghu Babu, and Annapurna did full justice to their roles. Dialogues penned by Bhanu and Nandu are good. Music of Anup Rubens is ok and songs give a full treat to the masses. But at times they acted as speed breakers. Anup Rubens' background music is good. Chota K Naidu showcased the rural and village atmosphere to perfection. The editing of Chota K Prasad could have been better especially in the first half and for some parts in the second half. Production values are good.

  • Manchu Vishnu
  • Sunny Leone's glamor
  • Interval twist
  • Few hilarious scenes

Disadvantages

  • Routine narration

Rating Analysis

Manchu Vishnu who reeled under a string of flops has taken a long break before deciding to make his comeback with Ginna. The film's unique title attracted the attention of all. The makers timed the film's release in such a way on Diwali eve to entertain the masses. Kona Venkat and his team penned hilarious dialogues and with the film loaded with mass commercial elements, they ticked all the right boxes. But the slow pace, routine story undid their good work. But Eshaan Suryaah balanced it with the thrilling twits and the glamor treat doled out by Sunny Leone makes up for everything. Altogether Ginna is a mass entertainer with interesting twists. Considering all these elements, Cinejosh goes with a 2.75 rating for Ginna.

Movie Review: Delicate and powerful, ‘Good One’ is one of the year’s indie breakouts

A 17-year-old’s perception of her father is forever altered on a three-day backpacking trip in India Donaldson’s excellent debut “ Good One ,” in theaters Friday .

Something happens. And then something doesn’t happen. But that’s more of the tear point on the already delicate fabric of a relationship that has been deteriorating from neglect for years.

The trip to the Catskills was envisioned as a joint family trip. Chris (James Le Gros) and his daughter Sam (newcomer Lily Collias) planned to go with Chris’s old friend Matt (Danny McCarthy) and his teenage son. But when they pull up to Matt’s place, there’s an argument taking place between the father and son, who retreats to the apartment as Matt stomps to Chris’s car. The teenage son is no longer joining them.

Donaldson focuses her camera on Sam, whose face and deeply expressive eyes tell you everything you need to know: This is weird and it doesn’t feel right. Suddenly she’s on a boys trip with a pair of sad middle aged men who have known one another for decades and whose lives haven’t worked out the way they thought. Both are divorced. Chris has moved on and has a new baby. Matt is still in the early stages of having his life upended. And, boy, do they talk about their failed relationships, one of whom is obviously Sam’s mother. “I couldn’t make her happy.” “She was the one who started doing things first.” “I didn’t want to get divorced.”

Sam rolls her eyes a lot of the time; Other times she responds insightfully. The guys seem to half hear her, but also not. They long ago decided on their own narrative, their victimhood, and Sam is not going to change that with a bit of innocent truth.

Image

Are they always this honest with their disappointments, failures and shortcomings around their kids, you wonder? Or is this a new thing happening on this trip? Chris, in particular, has forgotten that Sam, as worldly and wise as she seems, is still ultimately just a kid. You sense that Sam has already started to realize that her father is as flawed as anyone; but on this trip, his full self is on display.

Image

All of the acting is terrific and so naturalistic that it’s easy to forget that these are actors performing lines that they’ve memorized in front of a camera. Le Gros as the fastidious super camper, who freaks out about his daughter’s safety from bears when he discovers that Matt was eating in his tent, but does little later on; And McCarthy as a failed actor and now failed husband who can be charming and fun but is mostly annoying and gross. But the real breakout is Collias. Her face and presence, empathetic and knowing, carries the whole film in an unforgettable depiction of modern girlhood with all of the dreaminess, awkwardness and boredom.

Donaldson, like Kelly Reichardt , has a keen eye for the smallest of details; A reaction, a wince, even a blank expression that says everything. She also knows when to turn away from the dialogue and the people and give the audience a nature break. One of many great decisions was to have Sam on her period during the trip, something she deals with silently behind trees and bushes as the guys wait impatiently.

At one point the guys are dreaming about what they’d do differently if they had a second chance at life. Matt would be a philosopher. Chris would own a bookstore. What about Sam, they ask. She responds that hopefully she still has a shot at deciding on this life. Indeed.

These stakes might seem comparatively small in a movie landscape of deadly tornadoes, apocalypses and multiverses colliding. But that’s what makes it so special. It is humanity, with all of its beauties and disappointments, as most of us experience it. And it’s one that will likely stay with you for some time.

“Good One,” a Metrograph pictures release in limited theaters Friday, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association for “language.” Running time: 90 minutes. Four stars out of four.

The Big Picture

  • Lily Collias delivers an outstanding leading performance in Good One that is both confident and assured.
  • Writer-director India Donaldson strikes a delicate balance between capturing the beauty of the setting and a growing dread.
  • The cinematography by Wilson Cameron and the score by Celia Hollander fuse together perfectly.

This review was originally part of our coverage of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.

Every once in a while, there is a newcomer who gives such a commanding leading performance that it immediately makes them one to watch in anything and everything they set out to do. Think of the magnificent Lily Gladstone , who remains the best example of this , when she made her shattering breakout performance with Kelly Reichardt ’s Certain Women to understand what such a moment can feel like. These points in a newcomer’s career are among the most thrilling experiences that can come from opening your mind to films with people whose names you may not know yet, though you won’t be able to forget as soon as you see them work. The latest to make such an unforgettable impression is Lily Collias, who crafts an understated though no less arresting performance in writer-director India Donaldson’ s feature debut Good One . Though Collias played a supporting role in last year’s Palm Trees and Power Lines , which has some thematic similarities to this one, she steps into the spotlight here to bring us completely into the life of a teenager going backpacking with her father and his friend. It marks the arrival of two exciting new voices in Donaldson and Collias.

During a weekend backpacking trip in the Catskills, 17-year-old Sam navigates the clash of egos between her father and his oldest friend.

What Is 'Good One' About?

The film is all about Sam (Collias), though it is also just as much about her father, Chris ( James Le Gros ), and his friend, Matt ( Danny McCarthy ). The trio is going on a three-day backpacking trip in the Catskills, gorgeous mountains in southeastern New York State, that originally was supposed to include Matt’s son. This is quickly upended as, when Chris and Sam go to pick them up, we see an intense argument between the two spilling out onto the street. Though Sam offers to go talk to his son about this, Matt petulantly brushes this off and just leaves him. Thus, the four are now three and Sam will have to deal with the patriarchs all on her own. The experience then becomes one that can rapidly change from being occasionally fun to more annoying, with the two supposed adults incessantly bickering, and ultimately darkly depressing in one key turn near the end that is built upon all of this. It makes for an all-consuming film as Donaldson captures the particulars of this trip with such patience and precision that the growing discomfort becomes almost suffocating . Sam loves her dad and enjoys these trips. They may even be ones she remembers fondly later in life, though it is also beyond infuriating to see how she is treated at nearly every turn.

This is all then juxtaposed with the beauty of the landscape that is captured perfectly by cinematographer Wilson Cameron and given even more life via the score by Celia Hollander . There are many moments where Donaldson just slows everything down to take all this in, fusing the splendor of these rich images with peaceful yet potent music. That the film has drawn some comparisons to Reichardt perhaps makes sense. This is both because Le Gros was previously in the aforementioned Certain Women and because Reichardt’s latest, the sublime Showing Up , has many such moments of more peaceful contemplation. Hell, there are even moments in Good One where you hear some notes that might lead you to wonder if André 3000 was also playing the flute here again as well as it almost sounds like he might be.

However, while this comparison is a testament to Donaldson’s confidence in how she writes and directs, this is still largely reductive, as each is doing different things on a thematic level. Most notably, Good One is about a young person stuck having to appease the egos of adults. The way Donaldson explores this feels so authentic that it can be agonizing as we feel every casual moment of disrespect shown to Sam. They will ask for her advice, valuing her thoughts only when it has to do with them in some way, though will also just as quickly minimize what she’s feeling. It is all done so flippantly by both that you realize it has always been this way .

Sundance-2024-Good-One-Interview

This Sundance Indie Shows the "Unvarnished Truth" of Growing Up

First-time filmmaker India Donaldson and the cast of 'Good One' share what it was like filming this honest coming-of-age film out in the wilderness.

The discomforting reality is that this is how such dynamics can and do happen. Though there are always going to be moments of joy sprinkled throughout, whether it is when joking around in a slightly more reciprocal way or when beholding a breathtaking view, they become contaminated with just how cruel the two men are without a second thought. For all the ways that we can see Sam enjoys going on these types of trips, Donaldson delicately balances this with a growing sense of all-too-common dread in each scene . Details about the men’s insecurities come crashing down like an avalanche and threaten to bury anyone around underneath as an otherwise normal conversation can suddenly swerve into more troubling territory. Despite being in the grand beauty of nature, they remain anything but humbled as they manage to make nearly every single thing about them. In many ways, Good One is a gentle film, especially when we get to see moments with Sam by herself, free from her exhausting traveling companions. Of course, they never last long. It is a simple yet effective way to show how the mere presence of the men, so wrapped up in themselves that they miss the forest for the trees, is dragging her down. While one wishes there was more room given to stepping away from this, it makes one scene near the end carry that much more weight.

Lily Collias Is Outstanding in 'Good One'

Lily Collias as Sam peers out of a tent while out in the woods in Good One.

Through it all, Collias is so confident and assured that it feels like this is her fiftieth leading role instead of her first . While both Le Gros and McCarthy are equally convincing in their roles, they are nothing compared to her. They both get more lines, but she is the one that speaks volumes in every single moment. The way Collias makes her way through each scene is nothing short of spectacular, as we feel every emotion she must cautiously express with hesitancy that it hurts. This culminates in a deeply disturbing shift when Sam finds herself put in a position that could represent real and imminent danger. This gets even more grim in one of the final conversation scenes where she speaks up about what happened only to be downplayed by the person she should be able to trust most. It is a betrayal that, as we see Collias capture a multitude of realizations crossing across Sam’s face, cuts like a knife.

All the tranquility of nature is corrupted by this as it takes what should be a beautiful memory and poisons it for what will likely be forever. In the same way that Charlotte Wells masterfully revealed how a father can be someone who is broken and hurting in Aftersun , Donaldson shows how they can also be the ones causing the immense hurt. Though the way this subsequently wraps up could easily be perceived as being too neat, this is precisely the point. Just as she had been expected to do so throughout the film, Sam is essentially made to accept a contrived solution that falls far short of showing her basic respect. The emptiness of what is meant to be a caring gesture from her father, proving to be both too little and too late, serves as one closing demonstration of his profound inadequacy. She will outgrow both of these men, if she hasn’t already done so, though it is in this perilous time when she still must contend with their callousness that Donaldson and Collias create a striking cinematic portrait . Much like the beauty of the trees through which they walk on their trip, Sam has the potential to reach the sky and tower above it all. If only it were not for those who cut her down.

Good One is not just a great feature debut, but one of the best, most precise films you'll see all year.

  • Writer-director India Donaldson captures the particulars of this painful trip with patience and precision.
  • Lily Collias is a revelation, giving a leading performance that feels like her fiftieth instead of her first.
  • The film is a striking cinematic portrait, juxtaposing the beauty of nature with the increasingly cruelty that poisons it.

How ‘The Blair Witch Project’ revolutionized movie marketing

1999-dropcap-I-Midnight.png

In the beginning was the Word — or, as they call it in Hollywood, word of mouth.

For as long as there have been movies, studio marketers have relentlessly pursued ways to get people to talk about them. Whether through grabby trailers, glowing reviews or the water-cooler recommendations of satisfied audiences, word of mouth was the engine that could organically turn a little-known film into a sleeper hit through the power of communal buzz.

In the 1990s, the explosive growth of the internet promised to supercharge this engine into a high-speed, global force, extending the reach of movie marketing campaigns into uncharted corners of what was still being quaintly called “cyberspace.” But at a time when the concept of virality was still confined to infectious diseases, it took a low-budget, under-the-radar horror movie called “The Blair Witch Project” to wake up the industry to this new tool’s full revolutionary potential.

The 1999 Project

All year we’ll be marking the 25th anniversary of pop culture milestones that remade the world as we knew it then and created the world we live in now. Welcome to The 1999 Project, from the Los Angeles Times.

Directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez on a shoestring budget of $60,000, “Blair Witch” purported to be not a fictional story but the actual footage found in camcorders left behind by three young filmmakers who disappeared in the Maryland woods in 1994 while making a documentary about a mythical local hermit who abducted and slaughtered children. When “Blair Witch” premiered at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival , the film’s cast of unknowns — who had used their real names in the movie — were listed as either “missing” or “deceased.”

For the record:

8:55 a.m. July 31, 2024 An earlier version of this story credited Artisan Entertainment with launching a promotional website for “The Blair Witch Project.” The distributor relaunched a site created by the filmmakers months prior.

Months before the film had even reached Sundance, “Blair Witch” filmmaker and producer Haxan Films had launched a guerrilla-marketing website, blairwitch.com, that seeded the mythology with fictional police reports, newspaper articles, journals and interviews, drawing some 100,000 views before anyone had even seen the film. Snapping up the film’s distribution rights at Sundance for $1.1 million, Artisan Entertainment set about amplifying the is-it-real-or-not campaign, relaunching the website on April Fool’s Day and regularly updating it in the run-up to the film’s release to further stoke the mystery.

John Hegeman, Artisan’s head of marketing, was a true believer in the potential of the internet, having set up the first promotional movie website for the 1994 sci-fi film “Stargate.” Whereas a traditional studio movie marketing campaign could easily run to $25 million or more, Hegeman recognized that the internet could get the word out to an even wider audience, at just a fraction of the cost of print and TV ads.

John Hegeman in front of a still from "The Blair Witch Project."

“There are a lot of other ways to get to people other than throwing money at them,” Hegeman told The Times in a 1999 interview , noting that the film’s total pre-release marketing spending came to just $1.5 million. “When people say something can’t be done, that in itself is motivation enough to say, ‘Yes, it can.’”

Within weeks of its relaunch, the “Blair Witch” site was racking up 3 million hits a day. Artisan extended the unsettling marketing campaign with documentary-style trailers that featured stark, hand-held footage accompanied by frightened voices and screams. Young interns at the company were deployed to cafes and dance clubs around the country to ask people what they knew about the supposed legend of the Blair Witch, armed with realistic-looking “missing” posters for the film’s three stars.

By the time “Blair Witch” was released in July 1999, anticipation had reached a fever pitch — and the rest of Hollywood had taken notice. Jim Fredrick, professor of entertainment marketing at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, was senior vice president of creative advertising at Warner Bros. at the time and remembers marveling at the amount of buzz the indie distributor was able to generate through its grassroots campaign.

“The whole concept of found footage and making it a question of ‘Is this real or not?’ was just ingenious,” Fredrick says. “At any major studio, you’ve got big marketing budgets and you’re using research and testing things. Artisan didn’t have those tools or the money, so they had to figure out other ways — and lo and behold, here’s this thing called the internet and it’s incredibly cheap, if not free. These guys fooled the world, like Orson Welles with [the 1938 radio drama] ‘The War of the Worlds,’ and it became a phenomenon.”

Respected documentary filmmaker Joe Berlinger was hired to direct the Blair Witch Project sequel.

Opening in just 27 theaters, “Blair Witch” proved an instant sensation with audiences, earning a staggering $56,000 per screen, despite reports that some audience members vomited from the mix of fear and motion sickness caused by the film’s shaky footage. By the end of its theatrical run, the movie had expanded to more than 2,000 theaters and grossed nearly $250 million worldwide, over 4,000 times its original budget, making it one of the most profitable independent films of all time.

As the “Blair Witch” filmmakers worked to expand the film into a multimedia franchise including books, comics, video games and a sequel, others in Hollywood tried to emulate its formula. In the years that followed, movies like “Cloverfield,” “Paranormal Activity” and “The Last Exorcism” would borrow the found-footage concept with varying degrees of success. But recapturing the lightning-in-a-bottle cultural phenomenon of “Blair Witch” proved difficult as audiences grew more savvy to such marketing trickery.

“I can’t remember a horror movie I worked on after 1999 where the producer didn’t say, ‘Can’t you do for me what they did for “Blair Witch”?’” says Fredrick. “It’s very frustrating to have to tell the producer, ‘No, you don’t understand — we can’t repeat history here.’ The public has gotten very smart and they’re very hard to trick. You’re talking about the stars aligning in a way that may never be repeated again.”

The Marketing Wizard Behind the ‘Witch’

John Hegeman’s promotional brew--a Sci Fi special, a Web site, a comic book, not a lot of money--is paying off for the indie thriller.

July 26, 1999

Still, though it may have proved difficult to replicate, “Blair Witch” offered a proof of concept of the power of internet-based marketing, prompting studios to look for innovative ways to reach audiences through interactive digital campaigns and shared experiences rather than traditional media outlets. More broadly, it helped usher in a new era of pop culture in which the lines between reality and fiction would grow ever murkier.

A quarter century later, Fredrick says even the young students in his film marketing course, who were born in the smartphone era, recognize the pivotal moment “Blair Witch” represented.

“Every semester, I have an assignment for students to present a case study of their favorite marketing campaign, and every semester someone pulls out ‘Blair Witch,’” he says. “Even though they weren’t alive when the movie came out, they’re impressed — and kind of astounded — by the gullibility of people believing this was real. That’s a real nod to just how effective ‘Blair Witch’ was. People love unwinding a mystery.”

Ginna is a film that Vishnu Manchu has pinned a lot of hopes on. The film has hit the screens today after a huge round of promotions. Let’s see how it is.

The film is set in a small village in Chittoor district. Ginna(Vishnu Manchu) is a tent house owner who has huge debts. In comes Renuka(Sunny Leone) his childhood friend back to India. She is filthy rich and wants to marry Ginna. But Ginna loves Swathi(Payal Rajput). So, he makes a plan with his friends to cheat Renuka in the name of love and loot her money. Will he succeed or not forms the rest of the story.

Plus Points:

After a long time, we get to see Vishnu in a fun role. When it comes to comedy, Vishnu is a pro and does a superb job in this film. He has worked so hard on the film and that is visible in his dances and fights which are amazing. Especially Vishnu’s dances are the best.

Sunny Leone gets a meaty part and she does well. The entire story is based on her and it is the best of her career so far. Payal Rajput looks cute as the village belle and does well in the film. Senior actors Naresh and Suresh are decent in their roles.

Ginna is high on comedy and Chammak Chandra is the highlight of the film and aces the fun character quite well. His fun interactions with Sunny Leone have been designed so well. Vennela Kishore is also superb in his role and lifts the second half.

Writer Kona Venkat and team have made sure that the film is filled with good elements. The songs are well executed, fun, glamor and thrills in the second half are interesting. All this does not make the audience bored and there is a free flow of scenes.

Minus Points:

The film starts on a slow note and takes time to enter the main plot. Though the proceedings are filled with comedy, the main focus on the twist is established only at the break point.

Sunny Leone’s character should have been enhanced more in the first half to give more edge to the film. The climax twist reveal and the key point is rushed on to the audience. A more emotional angle in Sunny’s character would have made matters even better.

Technical Aspects:

Anup Rubens has composed the music and it is impressive. The choreography is amazing and so was the production design. The village visuals and the backdrop has been nicely showcased by Chota K Naidu. Dialogues are funny especially those written for Kishore and Chammak Chandra.

Coming to the director Suryaah, he has done a decent job with the film. Though there is nothing novel he showcases, the manner in which songs, fights, and comedy is composed without boring the audience is the best part. When you think, comedy is getting boring a twist comes in and credit should go to the director.

On the whole, Ginna is a fun thriller which is packed with neat comedy and passable thrills. When compared to Vishnu’s previous films it is a lot better. The film starts on a slow note and is a bit lengthy. But the well packed entertainment at regular intervals keeps the audience engaged and makes up for decent watch this holiday weekend.

  • Trivia The casting of Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni as Lily and Ryle caused backlash from fans because in the book Lily is 23 and Ryle is 30, while Lively is 35 and Baldoni is 39. Author of the book Colleen Hoover explained in an interview that she wanted to age the characters up in the movie in an effort to correct a mistake she made in the book. She said, "Back when I wrote It Ends With Us, the new adult [genre] was very popular. You were writing college-age characters. That's what I was contracted to do. I made Lily very young. I didn't know that neurosurgeons went to school for 50 years. There's not a 20-something neurosurgeon. As I started making this movie, I'm like, 'We need to age them out, because I messed up.' So, that's my fault."

Ginna Review: Routine Attempt

Ginna Review: Routine Attempt

Movie: Ginna Rating: 2.25/5 Banner: Ava Entertainment and 24 Frames Factory Cast: Vishnu Manchu, Sunny Leone, Payal Rajput, Chammak Chandra, Naresh, Vennela Kishore, Sunil, Satyam Rajesh, Raghu Babu, and others  Story-creative producer: Kona Venkat Music: Anup Rubens Cinematography: Chota K Naidu Editor: Chota K Prasad Producers: Vishnu Manchu Directed by: Suryaah Release Date: October 21, 2022

Manchu Vishnu aggressively marketed "Ginna." He even stated that he has decided to only do comedies in the future. He was certain that "Ginna" would provide him with much-needed success.

Let's see if his words are true.

Story: Ginna owns a Tent house in the village of Rangampet. He is struggling financially and has a lot of debt to pay off. Renuka (Sunny Leone), a beautiful and wealthy woman, returns from the United States to this village in search of her estranged uncle (Naresh). Renuka is a mute girl.

Ginna and his girlfriend (Payal Rajput) devise a scheme to steal money from Renuka and pay off his debts. Renuka, much to their surprise, offers to lend Ginna money and reveals that her sole reason for visiting this village is to marry Ginna.

Who exactly is Renuka, and what is her secret?

Artistes’ Performances: Manchu Vishnu has played a fun character. Aside from the standard songs and fights, he delegates more work to other actors. Sunny Leone plays a girl who has a medical problem. She is a glamorous psychopath. She plays her part well.

Payal Rajput has little to do. Chammak Chandra and Vennela Kishore act their roles as usual. Sunil makes an appearance in one scene. Naresh is fine.

Technical Excellence: Even though the film is mostly set in a village and some part in a resort, senior cameraman Chota K Naidu ensures that the visuals are grand. Songs by Anup Rubens are adequate. Dialogues are acceptable.

Highlights: A couple of entertaining parts Sunny Leone’s scenes

Drawback: Formulaic plot Outdated humor Predictable narration

Analysis In his career, Manchu Vishnu has had success with comedies (Kona Venkat and G Nageswara Reddy wrote "Dhee" and "Doosukeltha," for example). Following a string of failures, Manchu Vishnu hired writer Kona Venkat to pen the story for him, and "Ginna" happened. Kona Venkat wrote the screenplay in his regular format as in the horror comedy “Geetanjali”. The only difference is, there is no horror or ghost element in “Ginna”.

The movie begins and ends similarly to Allari Naresh's comedies. The first half of the film focuses on Ginna's tent house problems, his romance with his girlfriend, Raghu Babu's challenges, and so on. When Sunny Leone arrives in the village, the plot twists. Then we get some cheap comedy from Chammak Chandra, who is hired to translate Sunny Leone's mute expressions. He passes lewd remarks at Sunny Leone.

Following lengthy comedy episodes, the ghost begins her act and a flashback occurs, as seen in "Geetanjali." Similarly, after the comedy segment concludes, Sunny Leone begins to murder people. The filmmakers attempted to bring laughs with Chammak Chandra's fears for being a witness to her murderous act. We don't see any spirits, unlike in "Geetanjali."

Aside from a few comedic moments, the film's narrative is outdated. Suryaa, the new director, lacks the ability to give the clichéd story a modern twist. He directed the film in the style of G Nageswara Reddy.

Even the dialogues lack newness. Sample: “Ginna Ante Poyyi Meeda Karige Venna Kaadura Load Chesina Gun”.

While Vishnu’s attempt to move to comedies is laudable, he should have invested money and time for new writers who come up with fresh ideas. It’s time he should reinvent himself.

On the whole, “Ginna” is a clichéd comedy with few redeeming factors.

Bottom line: Outdated

Payal Rajput looks cute as the village belle. It must be said that Payal Rajput has given a good performance in this film and  she is a plus for the film. Senior actors Naresh and Suresh are fine in their roles. The comedy timing of Chammak Chandra, Vennela Kishore is very impressive. Sunil, Raghubabu, Satyam Rajesh, Suresh and Bhadram act well in their role.

Technical:  Coming on the work of director Suryaah, he  impresses the audience with this film Ginna. Anup Rubens’ music and background music are a plus for the movie. The songs in the movie are good. The production values are good. Chota K Naidu’s cinematography is impressive. The editing could have been better.

Analysis:  The movie Ginna  has thrilling elements,  and those who love comedy entertainers can watch this film once.  Although the first half of Ginna is a bit slow, the second half entertains the audience with more speed.  The twist that comes before the interval, and in the middle of the second half has taken the movie to another level.
