Brief and Real History of Christmas

There was nothing to worry about, however. My mom’s old friend lives there, and she helped greatly in arranging matters. She was kind to inspect the apartment offers found on the Net. Her husband, who is a civil engineer, commented then on all the pros and cons in each case, so that we could make up our minds more easily. He also recommended a reliable van line – they delivered all the breakables we decided to transport safely. Not to pay too much for transportation, we thought it wiser to buy some of the furniture and major appliances when already at the new place.

And that’s where Christmas shopping campaigns (which I usually find too hectic to my taste) came in handy. Due to numerous discount offers, bonuses and other perks, such as free delivery, we managed to furnish our new home with nicest things without it costing us an arm and a leg. Of course, touring the shops took us not one day but ten, but every minute spent was definitely worth it. I was lucky to participate in it all – thus I had the better part of December off school (well, I just had to work harder for a while at my former school).

After we bought the necessary furniture and home appliances, Mom and Dad got busy with some minor repairs and redecoration. As for Christmas ornaments, they delegated this task wholly to me. Oh, how glad I was! I can say I love festive preparations not less than the celebration itself, so I set about the task with all my heart.

For inspiration, I went window-gazing every day; those walks were magical in and of themselves thanks to light snowfalls that lasted a week. The streets were beautiful; I also visited malls. I sauntered past shop windows, took snapshots of designs I liked, and then discussed them with Mom and Dad. We brainstormed the best suggestions, and next I went to collect supplies for the DIY-able things and buy some ready-made ornaments. After that, with time free from school at my disposal, I devoted myself to creativity. It was bliss – if I’d had to attend classes, like it was every December before, I wouldn’t have even half the opportunity to indulge in all the arts and crafts that I love. I made fabric accessories, felted and papier-mâché ornaments, bunting, table decoration, greeting cards and gift wrapping.

Apart from that, I gave a hand in redecoration, too. While Mom was busy cooking, Dad and I went on pasting new wallpapers, hanging curtains and light fixtures. After a few more days of work, we made another tour to stock on groceries (which was a bargain, too due to all the special offers); then all that was left was arranging the furniture, buying a Christmas tree, decorating the place and preparing dinner.

On December, 25 we invited Mom’s friends over to our place. We presented them with a set of designer ceramic vases for their beautiful home, and they gave us a fondue pot, some fine Belgian chocolate and a pound of delicious strawberries which we relished as well as our long chat that wonderful Christmas night.

Church historian traces celebration’s path from wild revelry through Puritan’s progress to Hallmark holiday

On the first day of Christmas there was drunken carousing, gambling, street fights, bizarre costumes, and lots of sex. And it went on like that for at least 11 more days.

What sounds more like Carnival in New Orleans or a lost weekend in Las Vegas was, in fact, how Christmas was celebrated in England from the late Middle Ages into the early 17th century.

For the English Protestants who left in the early 1600s for Plymouth seeking religious freedom, such Bacchanalian festivities to mark the birth of Christ were utterly scandalous. And so true to the city’s “banned in Boston” reputation, the Puritans renounced English traditions and declared Dec. 25 a workday, even going so far as to criminalize Christmas from 1659 to 1681.

One prominent Boston minister, Increase Mather, a 1659 Harvard College graduate who served as its president from 1681-1701, led the opposition, railing in his writings against Christmas celebrants “consumed in Compotations, in Interludes, in playing at Cards, in Revellings, in excess of Wine, in mad Mirth.”

The Gazette spoke with David F. Holland , John A. Bartlett Professor of New England Church History and interim dean of Harvard Divinity School , about this early war on Christmas and how we ended up with the Hallmark holiday season of today. Interview has been edited for clarity and length.

David F. Holland

GAZETTE:  Christmas was a very bawdy, unruly affair in 17th-century England and Europe when Protestant pilgrims were setting sail for Plymouth colony and Massachusetts. How was it celebrated?

HOLLAND:  Christmas lands at the end of the harvest season and before the heart of the winter. And so, it was often seen as the moment when people had a chance to really feast.

It was very difficult to get fresh meat except in that period when the animals were slaughtered prior to the winter. Most of the work of the harvest had been done, so there was this window in the season when there was an opportunity to really let loose, to take time away from the daily drudgery, to indulge in foods that would not have been available most of the rest of the year.

European life was generally characterized by scarcity, and so, this moment of abundance presented a kind of celebratory possibility that, in many ways, just happened to coincide with longstanding tradition about the birth of Jesus Christ.

The form that Christmas observance or what they called “keeping Christmas” would have taken was often almost riotous behavior — a lot of drinking, a lot of gathering in large crowds.

One of the distinctive features of a traditional English Christmas was very conspicuous begging or asking for food by people lower on the social ladder toward people who were better positioned, including something that might look a little bit like Halloween. You’d knock on a door, you would demand food or drink, usually alcoholic drink. If the host did not provide what you had asked for then there was a cultural expectation that you would cause some mischief for the host.

Sometimes this spiraled out of control into actual moments of violence or conflict. Christmas became associated with sexual licentiousness, the loosening of normal social mores.

GAZETTE:  Many traditions we associate with the Christmas holidays were, in fact, drawn from cultures across Northern Europe, from ancient Rome, and from paganism, like exchanging gifts, giving tips to workers, and the Christmas tree.

HOLLAND:  A holly wreath would also be exemplary of that. … Many of those symbols of life and renewal predate Christianity itself. That’s part of the complaint that Puritans had, that these are pre-Christian observances not warranted by the Bible.

Puritans abided by something known as the regulative principle, which was that you couldn’t worship in a way that was not explicitly prescribed in scripture. Anything else was seen as a kind of pollution of pure worship and that includes things like the singing of hymns and carols. They would have sung the text of scripture in the form of the Psalms, but little more, and certainly not Christmas carols.

Anything associated with Christian worship that was seen as a cultural inheritance rather than revealed in scripture would have been considered a kind of corruption of Christian purity and something they felt obliged to oppose, like a Christmas tree, a wreath, a yule log. The ritualistic lighting of candles would be another example.

GAZETTE:  Did the Church of England or the Catholic Church condone this merrymaking or did they turn a blind eye to it?

HOLLAND:  A little bit of both. I think there was a recognition among some that the pressures of the social order were so great for most of the rest of the year that the social harmony was maintained by having a kind of release and that the effort to suppress that too aggressively would, in fact, be destabilizing to the social order.

This is the principle of Carnival — that the inversion of social ordering on a day or two a year actually reinforced the preservation of that social order the rest of the year. There certainly would have been people who made the case for not trying to suppress it too much because that would agitate the lower classes and create more problems than it was worth.

You do have critics who say, “It’s gone too far, you’re profaning the name of Christ in your observance of Christmas.” There certainly was a discourse like that.

One of the arguments made among English Protestants is that the celebration of Christmas is too Catholic, that a Protestant should move toward a more scripturally based Christian observance, and that Catholicism was too deeply rooted in its relationship with paganism. Therefore, it was seen to be an expression of English Protestantism to distance oneself a little bit from these modes of observing Christmas.

But it was always complicated: different groups observing in different ways with different levels of critique from those who found their observance offensive.

There would have been relatively little success in suppressing it until the Puritans came to power in the mid-1600s. In England, there was never really an official effort to deny people the opportunity to observe Christmas in this way except during the period when Puritans controlled the government in the aftermath of the English Civil War.

GAZETTE:  From 1621, a year after the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, these raucous Christmas celebrations appalled the Puritans living in Massachusetts. Some years later the Rev. Increase Mather still railed about these unholy celebrations in his sermons, calling them “highly dishonorable to the name of Christ.” Was this view widely held or confined largely to clergy and elites?

HOLLAND:  It was quite well agreed upon. The early Puritan migration to New England was quite socially homogenous. It’s a very middle-class movement — and by design. Cultures of servitude and slavery were a part of the colonial experience, so I don’t want to overstate this, but you did not have the kind of class structure that one would have found in England at the time.

The early Puritan settlers didn’t want to bring the truly indigent with them from England. Nor did you have an aristocratic class. So, many of the early Puritan migrants represented a shared social position as well as a common religious commitment.

Certainly, you did have people in early New England who resisted the suppression of Christmas. Sailors and fishermen were often seen as the source of social unrest or resistance to observing Puritan mores in coastal towns like Marblehead, where they were somewhat beyond the reach of the Puritan power structure. So, it wasn’t entirely uniform.

One of the earliest accounts is Gov. William Bradford in Plymouth colony running around on that first Christmas trying to get people to stop having a good time, suggesting that some folks were ready to party.

One of the big objections was that it was a disruption to Puritan thrift and industry. The idea that you would keep working through Christmas was part of that Puritan ethos. So independent of the riotous revelry, or the Catholic pagan elements, it’s just a question of good hard work that gets disrupted by Christmas.

That first Christmas in Plymouth demonstrates both the commitment to resisting a culture of Christmas and the fact that the denial of Christmas was not universally observed. That persists up until the mid-1700s.

The Massachusetts General Court actually outlawed Christmas. It became a criminal offense in 1659 through 1681 to observe Christmas. The fact that they felt that had to pass a law suggests a concern that some people were trying to keep Christmas, but also that there was widespread support for its suppression.

GAZETTE:  Was some of this objection driven by a desire to separate culturally from England and to establish a belief system here that was apart from the Church of England?

HOLLAND:  During the early generations of Puritan settlement, the goal was to set an example for England. These people were deeply English. This is truer of the Puritans in Massachusetts than of the Pilgrims in Plymouth, who were more committed to a concept of separatism.

The goal was to demonstrate what a godly community could look like and how God would bless and benefit that community. To be this shining example so that people in England would say, “Ah, that’s what we can become. If we do the same thing, we will receive similar kinds of divine blessings and we’ll prosper accordingly.”

The goal was to restore and purify England, not necessarily to reject it. And so, by resisting something like the culture of Christmas, they’re trying to set an example of what English society could look like if it were properly committed to true Christian principle.

GAZETTE:  By the mid-1800s, the Christmas Resistance, as it were, had largely faded. What happened?

HOLLAND:  The Puritan governance of New England had waned. By the early 1700s, you do have more religious diversity. You also get a form of Christmas emerging that is less Elizabethan riotousness and more reverent, more sedate.

And so, as Christmas itself transforms into a more socially respectable, more religiously acceptable form, and as society itself diversifies and liberalizes away from those early Puritan commitments, it creates this convergence of forces that allow for a gradual introduction of Christmas observance into the regular cadence of New England life.

Even then, up through the end of the 1700s and into the early 1800s, it’s a very modest affair, something that looks more like Thanksgiving than a modern Christmas, with a little extra food and families gathering.

We start to see people writing music specifically for Christmas in the last couple of decades of the 1700s; calendars and almanacs begin to consistently designate Christmas Day. So, these cultural markers show us that it is getting more and more acceptable, and that the practice looks more and more familiar to us as something other than Carnival.

And so, by the early 1800s, it’s a part of their sense of the season, but still not commercialized, not really the modern Christmas in the sense of nuclear family gathering in private in the morning and exchanging gifts. That’s still a way off. But it’s no longer this object of opposition that it had been 100 years earlier.

Lego reveals ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’ set just in time for the holidays

What’s this? Lego has announced a new, highly anticipated set inspired by Tim Burton’s classic 1993 film, “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”

The set, which features three iconic locations from Halloween Town, is set to go on sale September 1 for $199.99.

With three months to go until the 2024 U.S. presidential election, former Republican U.S. President Donald Trump addressed a campaign rally crowd in Atlanta, Georgia, telling them Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris doesn't want Americans to say "Merry Christmas."

Trump told the crowd at an Aug. 3 rally, referencing Harris, "Ready? The two words are 'Merry Christmas.' She doesn't want anybody saying 'Merry Christmas.' Now she's denying it and then they found the tape last night. She's such a liar."

Basically, the accusation less than five months from the Christmas holiday was that Harris — while setting her sights on the White House — did not want anyone saying "Merry Christmas." However, this broad claim was both false and nothing more than the latest chapter in what's become known as the "War on Christmas" — a familiar theme of seemingly imaginary persecution promoted at past Trump rallies.

Trump's mention of a "tape" referenced the unearthing of a December 2017 video clip first reported by Fox News Digital on Aug. 1, 2024. The article on FoxNews.com ( archived ) displayed the headline, "Flashback: Harris fumed at Americans for saying 'Merry Christmas' before illegal migrants got protections."

The Fox article began:

Then-Sen. Kamala Harris warned Americans not to say "Merry Christmas" until there was permanent status for some illegal immigrants — amid a Trump-era battle over protections for some illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children. "And when we all sing happy tunes, and sing Merry Christmas, and wish each other Merry Christmas, these children are not going to have a Merry Christmas. How dare we speak Merry Christmas. How dare we? They will not have a Merry Christmas," she said at a 2017 press conference, a video of which was obtained by Fox News Digital. Speakers pushed for the passage of the Dream Act, which would grant a pathway to citizenship for some illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as minors, NBC News reported.

According to the NBC News article linked in the Fox News story and a photo posted on the @NBCLatino X account, the video showed Harris speaking at a news conference for a DREAM Act rally at the United Methodist Building near the U.S. Capitol on Dec. 19, 2017.

Fox News shared a nearly 60-second video alongside its Aug. 1, 2024, article, including on FoxNews.com , Facebook and YouTube .

In the video, Harris says the following:

And only when they cleared that vet did we give them DACA status. And now we're talking about taking it away. It is morally wrong. And when we all sing happy tunes and sing "Merry Christmas" and wish each other "Merry Christmas," these children are not going to have a "Merry Christmas." How dare we speak "Merry Christmas." How dare we. They will not have a "Merry Christmas." They don't know if they will be here in a matter of days, weeks and months. Since Sept. 5, over 12,000 have lost their status. Each day, 122 lose their status. Each week, 851 lose their status. Each day matters.

On the day after making these remarks, Harris posted on Facebook, "DACA is an urgent issue and something we must address immediately. Each day in limbo in the life of these young 'Dreamers' is a very long time. We cannot stay silent. We must pass the DREAM Act now." She also published an opinion piece on Elle.com on the same day, titled, "Sen. Kamala Harris: We Must Act to Protect Dreamers Before the New Year."

The Fox News article did not mention a videographer's name credited for recording the video. In our research, we found that immigration organizer and writer Thomas Kennedy possibly captured the clip. A link in the aforementioned NBC News article led to a removed video. That link referenced an account that may have belonged to Kennedy. Reached via a direct message on X, Kennedy told Snopes, "I think thats my old Facebook account that I deleted." Upon asking if he recorded the video, he said, "I was at the rally but have no recollection of the video or remarks."

Harris Campaign Response to Fox News

The end of the Fox News article featured a statement from Harris campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz, in which he commented on immigration policies:

The Harris campaign has pushed back, contrasting her record with Trump's record in office. "The only 'plan' Donald Trump has to secure our border is ripping mothers from their children and a few xenophobic placards at the Republican National Convention. He tanked the toughest bipartisan border security deal in a generation because, for Donald Trump, this has never been about actually securing the border — it's always about himself. He can make up whatever lies he wants, but the fact is there's only one candidate in this race who will fight for real solutions to help secure our nation's border, and that's Vice President Harris," Harris campaign spokesperson said.

We emailed Munoz to ask questions about this matter but did not yet receive a response. Further, we were unable to find a Harris campaign denial of the 2017 video's existence — a matter mentioned by Trump during the Atlanta rally.

Harris' Past Messages of 'Merry Christmas'

In sum, again, the assertion promoted by Trump that Harris "doesn't want anybody saying 'Merry Christmas'" was not true. No evidence included with the unearthed video clip — a clip featuring remarks specifically about seeking to ensure immigrants wouldn't need to worry around Christmastime that the government or law enforcement might force them to leave the U.S. — showed Harris to be against the idea of saying "Merry Christmas" in any year, which online users sharing the clip asserted.

In fact, Harris' X account features several Christmas messages from past years. For example, five days after the recording of the Dec. 19, 2017, video she tweeted ( archived ) a Christmas Eve message offering sympathy for California fire victims and thanking firefighters for their efforts. Then, on Christmas Day, she tweeted ( archived ) a message including the words "Merry Christmas!," followed by another tweet ( archived ) honoring the "brave service-members" serving the U.S. on the Christian holiday.

In the most recent example from 2023, Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff appeared in a Christmas-themed video posted across her social media pages, including on Instagram , in which they honored service members. Again, Harris said "Merry Christmas," just as she wrote in another post also posted on Christmas Day.

As we previously reported about the history of the "War on Christmas" on Nov. 29, 2017 — just three weeks prior to Harris' video-recorded remarks about "Merry Christmas" and immigration — t he evidence suggests there is no vast conspiracy to erase the Christmas holiday and destroy American civilization in the process, even if some people clearly perceive it to be the case.

Spurs Before Thunder, Bucks Out: Is NBA Sending Message With Christmas Day Slate?

The NBA released its Christmas Day slate Thursday evening — the games of which have long been coveted by players and fans alike — and while many familiar teams were once again given the nod, there were a few surprises.

Two new teams joined the fold in the Minnesota Timberwolves and San Antonio Spurs. One of which made sense, especially considering Anthony Edwards' rising superstar status and the success that his team found during last season's playoffs.

But the other? The Spurs, who finished 22-60 for the second straight season, also earned a spot. Granted, they'll have the first game on the road in one of the toughest arenas to play in, but it counts.

Twenty-year-old star Victor Wembanyama will headline the Spurs' roster as the young team, now featuring Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes, takes on Jalen Brunson and the New York Knicks fresh off a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Safe to say, only one team truly earned its keep.

Though it seems as if the NBA is sending a message.

By including the Silver & Black, the league essentially admitted that marketability or in simpler terms, excitement, plays a role in determining prime time matchups on days like Christmas.

To this point, only teams with recent championships, league MVPs or winning records and playoff berths made it to the Christmas slate. On paper, the Spurs had none of those things.

But they do have Wembanyama.

"He's just so charismatic," NBA commissioner Adam Silver said of the Frenchman before he even touched the court for a regular season game. "He's so worldly. He speaks multiple languages. ... I don't want to put even more pressure (on him), but he has the opportunity to be one of the truly great players."

Everything Silver said was true. Wembanyama has a likable personality beyond the freakish talent he brings to the court. He's quickly become one of the league's better-known players and, should he continue developing the way he's expected to, will likely be the face of the NBA in a few years.

The "X-factor" he seems to possess didn't work for him in Defensive Player of the Year voting. In that contest, Rudy Gobert had a better defensive rating and anchored a team with a much better position in the Western Conference than Wembanyama's Spurs.

Sure, he was making plays that not many other players could. Yes, he was scaring players out of driving to the basket on fast breaks. But the numbers just weren't there.

With Christmas, that didn't seem to matter.

San Antonio leap-frogged the Oklahoma City Thunder — a team that led the Western Conference at the end of the regular season — in the line for a Christmas Day game. It jumped the New Orleans Pelicans, Sacramento Kings and LA Clippers, too. It replaced the Milwaukee Bucks.

And why? Marketability.

The move implies that the NBA felt Wembanyama was a more watchable player than Greek big man Giannis Antetokounmpo. It felt that fans were more likely to watch the Frenchman than they were Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren.

It also implied that Edwards and company made for better TV than the latter duo.

While the Thunder would be rightfully upset at the luck of the draw, it doesn't have much to say. It's hard to compete with a 7-foot-4 player that behaves like a point guard. And it's certainly hard to argue marketability when that player already has his own shoe deal, commercial and logo with Nike.

So, that leaves the Spurs facing the Knicks. Those two teams faced off last season twice, with the first meeting being a New York blowout and the second a Wembanyama masterclass, as the power forward notched 40 points, 20 rebounds, seven assists and three stocks.

The first time, the Knicks got to show their fans — and the rookie — who was boss, while the second game allowed for a nice exchange of praise between two stars.

“He’s going to be one of the greatest players this game has seen,” Brunson said after his team's loss to the Spurs in late March. “Just the way he’s built. What he’s been able to do so far. I have a lot of respect for him.”

However the game goes in December, the NBA likely won't regret its decision. If the Knicks win in a blowout, one of the most iconic franchises in the league will have earned another classic Christmas victory.

If Wembanyama wins on the road, one of the most intriguing young talents will have added another game to his arsenal. He'll have shown yet again why he's worth the hype, and likely solidify his team's spot on the holiday slate for the years that follow.

It's a win-win for the league. Subliminal messages or not, there's no other way to spin it.

This time, the Spurs just lucked out.

The Bob Clark -directed Canadian slasher is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and it's one of the rare films of its era never to get an official sequel. That's despite getting remade twice in the last 20 years. However, Black Christmas fans have no fear as writers, directors, and producers Dave McRae and Bruce Dale are back with their next film, It's Me, Billy: Chapter 2 . With just two months till the sequel and final installment’s release, the trailer is here with a familiar face trying to hunt down the dreaded “Billy”.

The trailer picks up where Chapter 1 left off. Jess Bradford , the franchise’s iconic final girl, is alive. However, she's been captured, alongside her granddaughter Sam, by Agnes and Billy. The film’s official plot synopsis reads as follows:

“Hidden deep within the walls of Jess Bradford's mansion lies the evidence that will exonerate her former boyfriend Peter Smythe and expose the real 1974 Bedford killers. Picking up immediately where Chapter 1 ended, Sam and her grandmother, now trapped and alone, must fight back against the clutches of Christmas evil before they're swallowed by its darkness.”

The trailer is jammed back with a chilling atmosphere, clever references to the original frozen nightmare , and a ringtone that’ll instantly bring back repressed trauma for long-time fans.

Who stars in ‘It's Me Billy: Chapter 2’?

The returning cast members from Chapter 1 include Victoria Mero ’s Sam , Caro Coltman ’s Agnes, and Bryan Charles Peter ’s Billy. Sam has become the franchise’s latest final girl, but that doesn't mean Chapter 2 has forgotten about its roots. Lynne Griffin will be making a Black Christmas comeback as Nancy . Griffin played Clare in the original 1974 film, who was Billy's infamous first on-screen victim on that ill-fated December night. The plastic bag kill remains one of horror’s most disturbing.

Nancy is Clare’s sister and a detective who's been trying to solve her cold case for decades. She's convinced Jess is alive when no one else does. Jess will also be featured in the action this time around, played this time by Lisa Kovack . Olivia Hussey was originally set to reprise her role as Jess, but she had to step down due to health reasons . The last key cast member is Glen Michael Grant as Detective Mike Hennie, who's been trying to convince Nancy to drop the case to no avail. When talking about their excitement about the upcoming release, the filmmakers stated:

"When we began this journey in 2019, our goal was to honor the original Black Christmas in the form of an unofficial fan sequel packaged in a professional product from top to bottom. But we knew we could only take the story so far, hence the cliffhanger ending of Chapter 1. We are so thankful that Black Christmas and horror fans from around the world stepped up and donated to our Indiegogo campaign so we could finish our story. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the original Black Christmas, and we are beyond thrilled to bring our two-part series and unofficial sequel to a close. Boyz II Men ’s Christmas Interpretations is coming to vinyl for the first time in North America. The 1993 album, a collection focused on original yuletide R&B songs, will be reissued on Oct. 4, just in time for the holiday season.

Christmas Interpretations first arrived via Motown Records on Oct. 5, 1993, between Boyz II Men’s multi-platinum debut Cooleyhighharmony and their even bigger smash hit sophomore album II . The holiday collection was co-produced by Boyz II Men and their labelmate Brian McKnight, who himself was ascending through the R&B ranks at the time. McKnight also appeared as a featured guest on “Let It Snow”—not a cover of the traditional holiday song but an original penned by McKnight and the group’s Wanya Morris.
