Noun worksheets, lessons, and tests.

Understanding the parts of speech is fundamental to learning more advanced concepts like sentence structure , grammar, and punctuation. That's why so many language arts units start with the parts of speech. And, if you are starting a unit on the parts of speech, one of the better places to begin is by studying nouns .

Nouns are words that refer to people, places, and things. Most grade school students can tell you this. But the study of nouns gets a little more complex. There are many types of nouns such as common and proper, singular and plural, and abstract and concrete. It is helpful to know these distinctions when studying language. Over the years I've created a catalog of noun worksheets and activities that work well in the classroom. These include multiple-choice tests, practice activities suitable for homework or classroom activities, as well as online noun activities that give students instant feedback and save teachers' time. I've posted all of these activities to this page and made them freely accessible to teachers, parents, and students. May we all one day have a better understanding of what we are saying.

This exercise is not so good as I thought. It is full of mistakes and quality of the exercises are also not very good. Please recognise these mistakes and improve the exercises.

Hello. I’m sorry that your experience using these materials was negative. If you report the errors as you notice them, I will correct them. Best wishes.

Please report the mistakes as you encounter them and I will fix them. I’m just a single person and could use your expertise to improve this site and these resources.

I am so impressed with the way you answered this person’s comment. I really appreciate all of your hard work and although I as well do not always agree with some of the material, I find that when it comes to grammar there are many differences of opinion. Again I thank you for sharing all of your hard work. It is a very valuable resource.

A couple of the documents on this page need to be reformatted. They are skewed.

I love your website.

Thank you for saying this.

The problem with having editable .rtf files is that they appear differently depending on which device / program you are using to open them.

They are great if you want to make a change to a file, but other than that, I highly recommend using the .PDF files.

PDF files are formatted for print and will display in a uniform manner despite the device / program on which you open them.

So, I’m sorry that the .RTF files are not displaying properly for you on your current device. I encourage you to try the .PDF files.

Best wishes!

SO useful! Thanks!

This is so helpful!! My son has been struggling with parts of speech. This will really help us out!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this site!

Reinforces and reflects my current lessons. Interesting and self explanatory. Thank you so much! Worth your weight in gold! This helps on several grade levels.

Very useful ,Thank you

Thanks so much for providing these worksheets. I am reviewing language skills with my computer class and these worksheets have been very helpful for the students.

I am happy to hear it. I’ll be making a bunch more in the coming months. Follow this page on Facebook for updates. Best wishes!

Very useful site. Thank you so much.

Learn about nouns worksheets

Why are nouns important.

Your child will use nouns for the rest of their life - not only are they useful to successfully communicate with others, they can also improve writing skills and reading comprehension. All of our English worksheets have been designed by teachers, completely aligned with the National Curriculum, and can be used either as a homeschooling resource or extra curricular aid. Help your child with their understanding of nouns and try one of our sample free nouns worksheets today.

Key stage 1 - key stage 2 nouns worksheets

Many of the basics are covered in our Key Stage 1 nouns worksheets. Knowing the difference between singular and plural nouns, understanding capitalisation for proper nouns and adding suffixes to nouns are topics first covered in our year 1 nouns worksheets . By the time your child moves onto year 2 nouns worksheets , they’ll start to learn about pluralising nouns ending in y and being able to correctly identify nouns within sentences. They should also begin to be able to spell nouns that end in vowels.

Our year 3 nouns worksheets start to focus on identifying the differences between nouns and pronouns, and recognising and spelling irregular plurals. They should also be able to identify singular and plural nouns, and collective noun worksheets will be introduced.

Year 4 nouns worksheets help to develop your child’s understanding of suffixes, and teaches them how to turn adjectives into nouns. In our year 6 nouns worksheets , they will further develop their knowledge of recognising noun types.

Key stage 3 nouns worksheets

By the time your child reaches our Key Stage 3 nouns worksheets, they should have a good understanding of nouns and how they’re used in different ways. Both our year 8 nouns worksheets and year 9 nouns worksheets are focussed mainly on consolidation of previous worksheets, and revising nouns as a whole to make sure your child has a solid understanding.

Packing in Meaning with Noun Groups Worksheet teaching resource

Pack Meaning Into Noun Groups

Students independently work with noun groups in this step-by-step worksheet. Following the gradual release model, students are initially shown how to build information around a noun , then they identify noun groups within sentences and finally, they create their own noun groups within the sentence context.

Use this worksheet in your Grammar lesson to help develop your students’ confidence when learning how to expand noun groups/phrases. Your students will begin to understand the important role that noun phrases play in enriching meaning.

We’ve included a handy answer key with this download as well.

Scaffolding + Extension Tips

The Google Slides version of this worksheet can be used to simplify the resource. Perhaps you might provide fewer examples for each question or you might find it beneficial to provide more opportunities for students to identify noun groups before creating their own.

Students who are looking for a challenge could add an adverb (in addition to the noun group) to expand their sentences. Or perhaps they could come up with a selection of new head nouns for their peers to build sentences around.

Easily Download & Print

Use the dropdown icon on the Download button to choose between the PDF or Google Slides version of this resource.

Because this resource includes an answer sheet, we recommend you print one copy of the entire file. Then make photocopies of the blank worksheet for students to complete.

To save paper, we suggest printing this 2-page worksheet double-sided.

Turn this teaching resource into a sustainable activity by printing it on card and slipping it into a write and wipe sleeve. Students can record their answers with a marker pen, and then erase and reuse.

Alternatively, project the worksheet onto a screen and work through it as a class by having students record their answers in their notebooks.

When they start primary school, children will learn to use phonics to spell words that contain these sounds. English writing sometimes represents the same sound in different ways, so they might not always get it right every time (for example, they might spell ‘name’ as ‘naim’ or ‘naym’).

For a full list of the sounds that children will learn to spell in Year 1, take a look at the National Curriculum spelling appendix .

Spelling common exception words

In some English words, the spelling of the word doesn’t appear to fit with the phonemes that children have been taught so far. These are often called ‘common exception words’ or ‘ tricky words ’. In Year 1, children will learn to spell the ones that are used most often in writing. They include:

the, a, do, to, today, of, said, says, are, were, was, is, his, has, I, you, your, they, be, he, me, she, we, no, go, so, by, my, here, there, where, love, come, some, one, once, ask, friend, school, put, push, pull, full, house, our

To practise spelling common exception words, download our Year 1 common exception words worksheet .

Spelling the days of the week

Your child will learn to recite and spell the days of the week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Naming the letters of the alphabet

Your child will learn to:

  • name the letters of the alphabet in the right order
  • use letter names to distinguish between alternative spellings of the same sound (for example, to understand that ‘ c eiling’ and ‘ s ea’ use different letters to show the same ‘ss’ sound).

Adding some prefixes and suffixes to words

Suffixes are morphemes (groups of letters that mean something on their own) that are added at the end of a root or root word to change the meaning. Prefixes are morphemes added at the front of a word. Over the course of Year 1, children will learn about some of the most common prefixes and suffixes to change the tense of a word:

  • using the spelling rule for adding -s or -es as the plural marker for nouns and the third person singular marker for verbs
  • using the prefix un-
  • using -ing , -ed , -er, and -est where no change is needed in the spelling of root words. For example, help ing , help ed , help er .

How to help at home

There are lots of ways you can help your Year 1 child with spelling. Here are our top ideas.

1. Practise phonics

Phonics is the main way your child will learn to spell at the start of primary school. You can use phonics by encouraging your child to spell a word by breaking it up into individual sounds and then matching those sounds to the letters of the alphabet.

Video: What is phonics?

Watch this fun animation to find out about phonics and understand the key aspects of learning to read using phonics.

2. Help with spelling homework

Some schools send spelling words home to learn in Year 1, while others just use phonics sessions at school to teach spelling. If words do come home as a list to learn (perhaps for a spelling test), then helping your child to learn them can be really helpful. If they are struggling to remember them, you might:

‘which letters are making the ‘ay’ sound here? Yes, it’s the ‘ai’, just like in ‘gain’ and ‘Spain’. That’s different to the ‘ay’ sound in ‘play’, isn’t it?’
  • Use over-pronunciation. So for  Wednesday , encourage children to say  Wed-nes-day  as they write. There are lots of words which feature sounds that aren’t always pronounced clearly (such as words ending in -ed ), and over-emphasising these while spelling them out can help fix the spelling in your child’s memory.
  • Ask your child to write down the words that they need to remember how to spell. The physical act of writing the words by hand helps to anchor the spelling in children’s memories and encourages them to think about the letters that represent the sounds in the word. Typing the words into a PC or tablet isn’t as effective.
  • Focus your child’s attention on the tricky bits in a word by asking them to highlight them. For example, show them that said has ‘ai’ in the middle and ask them to write the word, and then highlight or underline this part to help them remember. Few resources are more motivating than a highlighter pen for primary-aged children!

3. Play spelling games

Video playlist: how can i help my child with spag.

Charlotte Raby offers her expert advice for helping your child develop their grammar, punctuation, and spelling skills at home.

For example, your child may have to learn ‘room took hoop foot book’. They could make up a silly sentence such as ‘The boy took his book across the room but got his foot caught in a hoop’. Why not draw illustrations to go with the sentences?

4. Find the right resources

Year 1 common exception words.
