According to some individuals,it would be more effective if authorities allocate finances from the budget for more crucial fields rather than arts. In my opinion, there are some areas such as education, medicine and etc that are more vital nowadays and they need financial support. This essay will elaborate on my viewpoint in detail

To begin with,most people consider the authority is spending a huge amount of budget on arts which could be used for better lifestyle or other crucial development work. A case in point is medicine or education or any other branch would be more advantageous. If the fund for arts could be diverted to healthcare to train many nurses,doctors and to build more hospitals, the death toll would be fewer. Additionally, one of the main issues in today’s life is transportation that is due to an increasing rate of air pollution. It is not secret that private cars produce much released gases. Henceforth,if authorities multiply public transportations including,bus, train or etc. that can effectively mitigate traffic congestion during peak hours.

To continue with, learning in the fundamental right of everyone. For country, investment in higher education will give birth to a skilled and ingenious workforce. In most modernized nations basically in Japan and China, government focus on learning at first. As they know that knowledgeable generation are their strengths and key of success for the future.

For summarising,government funds allocated to the arts should be proportionately less than those allocated to the main addressing public needs. Prioritizing public welfare is crucial and funds can be directed toward exploring and investing in the arts. This balanced approach ensures the comprehensive development of the nation

A highly controversial issue today in the air is apropos with the healthcare system. Certain people asserts that public should be the charge of health services while has a different sights onto it as well. In my opinion, despite the benefits of freer system in the medical field, government management has an overall positive impact on society.

The compelling reason to support my side is financial crisis and corruption. In the recent world 65% people are fighting with trade depression to maintain a household activity. Numerous medical operations consist a lot amount of dollars which slightly cheaper in the government hospitals as a result it is an ease for middle class people. If such rights are under the citizen’s hand then situation will become terrible as everyone comes with a possible outcome which can save their banking accounts. This approach will indirectly creating a caution for doctors as they do not have a specific digits income. Under the rules of government equality will manage and it reflects the progress of nation and economy both because such trade skill workers are high paid tax workers.

Nonetheless, detractors have their evolution with credentials and job opportunities. Several master degree physician never getting a high paid workplace whereas operating a private clinic with surplussing charge is only productive method for them to gain an experience and income. To illustrate, in many countries like India above a quarter people prefer a veteran private hospitals than surgery in local centers. While hospitals are providing a powerful result but conveniently and fast focus individual outcome can possible in private sectors who can afford the treatment.

To encapsulate, both the side have their comparatively merits and demerits. It is an onus of an individual to potentially counter the benefits for everyone to pay and get equal healthcare. I believe that, in the future the thought of public involvement will entirely eliminate with initiative of government to raise the position of doctors and medical workers in the hospitals.

Opinions are divided regarding whether the government or privately-owned companies should be responsible for providing medical services for the masses. Although the authorities can make healthcare widely accessible for everyone, regardless of their socioeconomic statuses, I am strongly convinced that private organizations should also be allowed to participate in this industry. Skeptics of private companies performing medical services may point out the exorbitant prices of healthcare these days. Perhaps the quintessential example of this would be the United States whereby healthcare services are prohibitively expensive. Consequently, the unwell in this country, most especially those suffering from severe illnesses, are likely to face the prospects of bankruptcy due to colossal medical bills. However, when the government uses restrictive legislation to strictly regulate the medical industry, which is the case in various progressive countries such as Canada or England, chances are individuals do not have to bear the financial burden stemming from medical treatment when being ill.   Despite the aforementioned argument, I claim that the availability of private healthcare providers can bring enormous benefits to society. Although the government may make healthcare more affordable for everyone, the public budget may not be able to accommodate the insatiable demands of the public for this service. Therefore, the participation of private companies in offering medical treatment for the masses, be it building more clinics and hospitals or buying more medical facilities, can alleviate the burden the governments, otherwise, have to carry alone. A good example of this would properly be the COVID-19 pandemic that state-owned hospitals fail to treat millions of patients suffering from this disease at once, therefore having to rely on the assistance of their privately-owned counterparts. This is a testament to why it is justifiable for private companies to partake in the healthcare industry. In conclusion, although the benefits of medical services being controlled by the governments are undeniable, I am of the opinion that the involvement of private companies in this industry is also necessary.

People hold different views about how our tax money should be spent. While I agree that medical care is a field that requires huge investments, I believe that the government should also allocate the money for other priorities, such as education and transport.

On the one hand, a certain amount of tax money has to go to healthcare services. Today, a number of particular diseases are on the rise in terms of popularity, and it would be costly to supply vaccines, medicines, or treatments. For example, a large proportion of the population is now suffering from respiratory diseases or lung cancer due to exhaust fumes from vehicles and gas emissions from industrial factories. The remedies for those patients and the treatment facilities are often expensive, and the hospitals may find themselves in the struggle with financial problems without assistance from the tax system.

On the other hand, healthcare is not the only industry that needs money to be kept running. Take education as an example. The quality of the schooling system is proportional to the competence of the future workforce. Therefore, a country can benefit from such skillful human resources in the long-term if they invest the tax budget to build schools, provide lecturers with training courses, or hire native speakers to teach a foreign language. Moreover, the government should also spend money on solving transport problems. Traffic congestion is a global issue these days, and we can only handle the scenario if new highways are opened, and narrow public roads are expanded.

In conclusion, I believe that the government should use tax-payers’ money to improve not only the healthcare services, but also the education and transportation system.

• Allocate : Distribute (resources or duties) for a particular purpose ==>in past years we didn’t allocate enough funds to infrastructure maintenance
• Respiratory : Relating to or affecting respiration ==>We transferred the patient to the intensive care unit for respiratory and inotropic support.
• Fumes : An amount of gas or vapour that smells strongly or is dangerous to inhale ==>clouds of exhaust fumes spewed by cars
• Emissions : The production and discharge of something, especially gas or radiation ==>the effects of lead emission on health
• Remedy : A medicine or treatment for a disease or injury ==>Once estrogen replacement is prescribed, a medical practitioner calibrates the remedy.
• Proportional : corresponding in size or amount to something else ==>the punishment should be proportional to the crime.

The debate among tax-payers on whether healthcare should be prioritized for government spending or other sectors should be given more priority has been a dilemma for ages. Although both these areas are crucial for a nation, I believe that there should be a balance in the allocation of public resources and this system should be adjusted as needed. In the following paragraphs, I will explore both sides of the argument and justify my views with relevant instances.

First and foremost, the need for advanced medical facilities is rising with each passing day. This is quite evident in the number of health issues that middle-aged and senior citizens are facing lately. The condition of government hospitals and the dire need for improvement in the quality of such vital public services needs to be acknowledged by the authorities. Thus, the need for the allotment of added funding for the medical sector has become critical.

Nevertheless, there are other sectors in the economy that are also in a crippling monetary state and need aid from the administration. Education, public transportation and sanitation are some of the sections under government administration that need to be uplifted and developed immediately. Government spending in ventures like the education of the youth is of utmost importance as they are the future of the country. Therefore channelling public resources into the expansion of a single domain will lead to complications in the others.

Finally, it is essential to understand that government resources are already stretched thin and raising additional funds is a herculean task to accomplish. On that account, an equilibrium must be maintained when planning the annual budget so that every economic sector flourishes uniformly.

Giving lectures in halls to large numbers of people is an outdated method of teaching. With the technology available today, there is no justification for it and everything should be done online.

In most universities students focus on specialised subjects, however, some people believe that universities should encourage students to study a wider variety of subjects.

It is generally believed that some people are born with certain talents, for instance for sport or music, and others are not. However, it is sometimes claimed that any child can be taught to become a good sports person or musician.

Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace. Others think that the true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer.

More and more people are visiting historic sites and sometimes tourists damage these ancient sites. The number of people visiting these places should be strictly limited.

Shopping has developed from a necessary activity to a kind of entertainment.

Many small businesses are being forced to close because they are unable to compete with multinational corporations.

What problems does this cause and how can those problems be solved?

Multinational companies are becoming increasingly common in developing countries.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of this?

Government Spending

People prefer to watch foreign films rather than locally produced ones.

Some people think that mothers should spend most of their time raising their family, and therefore the government should support them financially.

Development

In some countries, the numbers of children aged 15 and younger are increasing dramatically.

What are the current and future effects of an ever-increasing population?

A recent study showed that people in developed countries are not as happy as they were before development.

What are the causes of this and what are some possible solutions?

Sometimes celebrities get invited to international aid events.

Do you think that such events deviate from their main purpose by inviting famous people?

Some people believe that richer countries should give poorer countries more financial assistance.

Some people believe that no aid should be given to developing countries that have poor human rights records.

Public Transport

Some people think that a car is the best way to travel in cities while others believe a bicycle is a better way to commute.

However, it’s important that you use them wisely. Simply reading through them won’t improve your skills or your score. When using IELTS Writing sample essays, I always recommend following my ___ step strategy:

• Start off by reading the question – NOT the answer.
• Attempt to answer the question under exam conditions.
• Compare your letter with the sample answer.
• Improve your original answer by using some of the elements you noticed in the sample letter. Eg. how did the writer use structure, vocabulary and grammar?

Types of essays to expect in your IELTS Writing Task 2

Preparing for IELTS Writing? Read this article on the different types of essays you are likely to encounter in the test.

Content Tags

In Task 2 of the IELTS Writing test, you are asked to write an essay of at least 250 words in both the Academic and General training modules.  However, should you use the same approach to all essay questions?  The answer to this question is ‘no’ as there is more than one question type to consider when writing your answer. It is important to understand what the task requires from you because you may lose marks unnecessarily, even if you have good grammar and vocabulary.  Let’s have a look in more detail.

Opinion Essay

Here is a sample opinion essay question:

With traffic jams and pollution increasing every year in big cities, some people say that public transport should be free in big cities to help reduce these problems which are caused by cars. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In the introduction to the essay, you can provide some background information, but importantly, make sure you paraphrase the input language (the words from the question) and indicate your position on the matter.  For example:

With the growth of middle classes around the world, ownership of motor cars has become much more common, particularly for those who reside in large urban areas.  It has been argued that free public transport should be provided in these metropolises as a method to curb the amount of polluted air and traffic congestion. This essay will explain why this approach should not be undertaken for cost and mobility reasons.

When it comes to your body paragraphs, it is important to have one core idea that you extend and develop.  You can do this by mentioning further explanation about a particular point, an example, a consequence or possibly a concession.  Let’s compare the two paragraphs below:

Paragraph A

The reasons for not providing free public transport for urban residents are diverse.  Firstly, there would be a significant cost for the government to pay for this, meaning they would have no option but to raise taxes for individuals rather than for industry which produces more pollution.  Secondly, this would be unfair for those who need to use vehicles for more door-to-door travel, such as people who live far from train and bus stations or those who need to carry many things with them.  Furthermore, if public transport is free, there would be overcrowding on trains and buses, meaning that people simply replace one type of inconvenience for another.

Paragraph B

Looking at the argument from a cost perspective, even though there is an initial financial advantage for commuters with savings made on fuel, at some point down the track this would be lost, as municipal governments would have no choice but to raise taxes to pay for the construction, management and maintenance of public transport facilities.  If the funds allocated to this were invested in how to make vehicles greener instead, such as with electric cars, the issue of air pollution would be addressed in a more cost-effective way. For example, the city of Taiyuan in China now has better air quality partly due to the investment they made in electric taxis and buses.

Paragraph A addresses the question, but it does have some issues:

1. There is no topic sentence.

2. There are too many ideas. It is better to have one core idea which is expanded or extended rather than making a list of separate items.

Paragraph B is better developed than Paragraph A because:

It has a clear central topic (money)

The topic is extended with:

A concession

A consequence

Lastly, it is useful to end your essay with a conclusion.  This is where you can review your answer (your position plus the main points from the body paragraphs) and finish off with a final thought or suggestion.  For example:

To summarise, free public transport is not a viable option to reduce road blockages and improve air quality, as there are better cost efficient ways to do this and the mobility issues it can cause.  Moving forward, cities around the world should adopt greener transport options whether they be public or personal to ensure better traffic flow with fewer impurities in the air.

Discussion Essay

Here is a sample discussion essay.

Some people say that children should learn a foreign language when they are at kindergarten, but others feel that it is better for children to do this when they are teenagers. Discuss both of these views and give your own opinion.

The main thing to understand in a task like this is that there are 3 parts to the answer:

Discuss both of these views (1st and 2nd part)

and give your own opinion (3rd part)

When it comes to your introduction, it is important to mention both of these views, plus indicating your position can also be a good approach. For example:

Given that the world has become more globalised, the need to be able to use foreign languages has increased.  As a result, there are those who believe that a child’s kindergarten years should be when another language is introduced, while the opposing view is that it is more ideal to wait for when a youngster reaches adolescence.  This essay will reflect on both of these viewpoints before concluding with why the infancy argument is more valid.

When you ‘discuss both of these views’ in your body paragraphs, make sure you avoid mentioning your personal view.  This can avoid any confusion between what you think and what they views of others are.  Here are some introductory parts to the body paragraphs when discussing both views:

Looking at the kindergarten perspective firstly, the key reason why some claim this is a beneficial approach is …

With regards to waiting for the teenage years, supporters of this view argue that …

You will see that the writer has used phrases like ‘some claim’ and ‘supporters of this view’ to make sure that his/her own opinion is clearly separated.  When introducing your own perspective, you can clearly mark it as follows:

On balance, my personal view is to support the former view because …

Weighing up both sides of the issue, despite the confusion a second language can cause youngsters in their development, I am of the belief that...

Two-part Questions

Another question type you may see in your IELTS Writing test is one where you have two separate prompts you need to answer. Here are a few examples:

These days, many cities have problems when they grow quickly, such as accidents and traffic jams. Why do these problems occur? How do these problems impact people who travel for work or study?

A trend in current times is the need for many workers to spend time outside of company hours on answering text and e-mail messages for their job. What problems does this cause for the worker? What can be done to reduce the impact of these problems?

It is becoming very common these days for students to take courses over the Internet instead of in face-to-face classrooms. Why are more students choosing this way of learning? Is this a positive or a negative development?

In this type of task, you can write a body paragraph on each of the two questions, but it is important to fully understand what you focus should be. Try to match these tasks (A, B or C) with the type of response required:

Task Type                      Sample Question

1. Cause + opinion:           A, B or C?

2. Cause + effect:              A, B or C?

3. Cause + solution           A, B or C?

We can look at these sample questions in more detail now:

Therefore, this matches Type 1.

ELS St. Petersburg Student Residence

Eckerd College Campus Residences are open to ELS students between the ages of 18 to 25 and staying for two or more consecutive sessions. Shared rooms are in a lodge-style student residence. Each room has a private bath, two beds, desks, closet, cable TV, and internet access. Linens are provided. Rooms are cleaned weekly. Married couple rooms may be available if both parties meet the requirements. Self-service laundry machines are available for a small fee. Each room has its own key, and the entrance has a secure checkpoint.

Tim Walz's military record: What to know about potential VP's National Guard service

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate on Tuesday, choosing a progressive yet plain-spoken VP candidate from America’s heartland to help her win over rural, white voters.

“I’m pleased to share that I’ve made my decision: Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will join our campaign as my running mate,” Harris said via text to supporters. “Tim is a battle-tested leader who has an incredible track record of getting things done for Minnesota families. I know that he will bring that same principled leadership to our campaign, and to the office of the vice president.”

We look at Walz, a 60-year-old U.S. Army National Guard veteran, and his military career over the years.

How long was Walz in the military?

Walz served in the military for 24 years, enlisting in the Nebraska National Guard at 17 in 1981 and then transferring to the Minnesota National Guard in 1996. He retired in 2005 to begin his successful run for the U.S. House, representing Minnesota as command sergeant major, among the highest ranks for enlisted soldiers. His battalion went on to deploy to Iraq shortly after Walz's retirement.

Walz specialized in heavy artillery and had proficiency ribbons in sharpshooting and hand grenades.

But during the 21 years that Walz spent working with large artillery pieces, he suffered hearing loss and tinnitus in both ears, Minnesota Public Radio reported. He was allowed to continue his service after undergoing surgery, which partially resolved his hearing loss.

Where did Walz serve, and what did he do in the National Guard?

During his service, Walz responded to natural disasters, including floods and tornadoes in Minnesota and Nebraska, and was deployed overseas for months at a time, according to MPR.

In 2003, he was sent to Italy, where he served with the European Security Force to support the war in Afghanistan. He was also stationed in Norway for joint training with other NATO militaries.

Walz told MPR that he reenlisted in the National Guard after the September 11 attacks but never saw active combat in his years in the military.

Stars and Stripes reported in 2020 that Walz credited his Army experience with helping him steer Minnesota through the COVID-19 pandemic as governor.

As governor of Minnesota, Walz is commander in chief of the 13,000-soldier Minnesota National Guard. “I’m certainly proud of my military service, but it’s one piece of me,” he told Minnesota Public Radio in 2018. “It doesn’t define me.”

IELTS Model Essay Answer for June 2017. The IELTS essay question was reported in the academic test on 17th June, 2017 – just two days ago. It’s a difficult topic for students who have not prepared ideas for court trials. Use my model essay below to develop ideas.

In some countries,some criminal trials in law courts are shown on television so that the general public can watch. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Below is a model essay answer for the IELTS essay question above. Remember there are a number of different ways of writing this essay question and this model answer offers one way.

Model Essay Answer

In recent years, criminal trials have been televised in some countries to allow the public an opportunity to watch them. I believe, although there are advantages, making trials public can lead to too much injustice and other problems.

One of the main advantages of allowing court trials to be broadcast on TV is that the entire judicial system is open to the public to watch and supervise. In some countries where the judicial system is corrupt, it would be a step forward towards more justice by televising the trials as it is overseen by the public. Another benefit is that opening the doors of the court room allows the public rights to information. The public have a right to know the details of trials so that they can form their own opinions. This is important in countries where the government has restricted public access to information.

On the other hand, allowing trials to be shown on TV has serious consequences. Firstly, the public might form opinions which are based on mass media bias and a lack of understanding of the legal system. This public and media pressure might affect the outcome of the trial and justice will not be served. Secondly, the legal team might see this as an opportunity to promote themselves which means they may be distracted and not put all their attention into defending or prosecuting. Lastly, the jury is supposed to decide the verdict but by televising the trial, the entire public removes the effectiveness of a jury system.

In conclusion, regardless of the benefits, the disadvantages of an open televised trial can be devastating due to public and media pressure which might result in a lack of justice.

Hi dear Liz. Some tutorials mention to outline the main points in introduction paragraph by saying, “this article will discuss…”. However, you have done this implicitly in your entire samples. Would you please clarify this? Thanks

The sentence which starts “This essay will discuss” is NOT a requirement of IELTS. It is not a sentence that is necessary at all.

Thank you very much. You usually do not put a comma in the middle of your sentences before these conjunctions: but, as, so would you please explain when we should or should not use comma before these words?

Don’t use contractions or informal language in your task 2 essay. It will affect your score for vocabulary.

Hi Liz, What the meaning of ‘to information’ which is in the second paragraph?

The sentence is “….allows the public rights to something”. The “to” is attached to “rights to something”

Can i use all 1st letters in capital in my answer sheet (ex: Water Bottle Is In My Bag ) as i don’t want to miss marks for the words which should have 1st letter capital ! Please suggeste Thank you

Use all capital letters for listening and reading – then you won’t make mistakes.

You are asked to give examples when relevant. This means it is your choice if you want to use them or not. There are many ways to illustrate or explain an idea.

If you are doing the academic test, then you don’t need to learn to write letters for writing task 1. Just use academic practice test materials.

TV is a standard abbreviation. However, as a rule, it’s best to avoid them.

After a deadly stabbing at a children’s event in northwestern England, an array of online influencers, anti-Muslim extremists and fascist groups have stoked unrest, experts say.

Violent unrest has erupted in several towns and cities in Britain in recent days, and further disorder broke out on Saturday as far-right agitators gathered in demonstrations around the country.

The violence has been driven by online disinformation and extremist right-wing groups intent on creating disorder after a deadly knife attack on a children’s event in northwestern England, experts said.

A range of far-right factions and individuals, including neo-Nazis, violent soccer fans and anti-Muslim campaigners, have promoted and taken part in the unrest, which has also been stoked by online influencers .

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has vowed to deploy additional police officers to crack down on the disorder. “This is not a protest that has got out of hand,” he said on Thursday. “It is a group of individuals who are absolutely bent on violence.”

Here is what we know about the unrest and some of those involved.

Where have riots taken place?

The first riot took place on Tuesday evening in Southport, a town in northwestern England, after a deadly stabbing attack the previous day at a children’s dance and yoga class. Three girls died of their injuries, and eight other children and two adults were wounded.

The suspect, Axel Rudakubana , was born in Britain, but in the hours after the attack, disinformation about his identity — including the false claim that he was an undocumented migrant — spread rapidly online . Far-right activists used messaging apps including Telegram and X to urge people to take to the streets.
