Dnc: day 2- speaker lineup and what to expect.

The memory of President Joe Biden’s last four years of presidential reign was honored on the first day of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago.

After being ousted of the presidential race by notable leaders in his own party, Biden still seemed content with his DNC commemoration and the wave of cheers from the crowd that erupted once when he walked on stage.

However, on Tuesday, there will be a greater emphasis on the future, at least according to DNC organizers.

The organizers of the convention stated that they will attempt to draw attention to the distinctions between the platform of the Trump-Vance ticket and the Harris-Walz campaign.

First lady Michelle Obama and former President Barack Obama are scheduled to speak, as well as second gentleman Doug Emhoff, Kamala Harris’s husband, among others.

Some speakers (not in order) that are scheduled to make an appearance on Tuesday night includes:

• JB Pritzker of Illinois
• Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer of New York
• The grandson of Jimmy Carter
• Democrat Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois 
• Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont
• Doug Emhoff, Kamala’s husband
• Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico
• Mesa, Ariz., Mayor John Giles, who claims to be Republican but still supports Harris.

As is tradition, the convention will also hold a roll call.

The theme of the DNC’s day two on Tuesday is “A Bold Vision for America’s Future.”

The party will discuss their perceived differences between Trump and Harris as well as their respective future outlooks.

Additionally, dubbed “the Godmother of Soul,” Grammy Award-winning vocalist Patti LaBelle was spotted practicing with her background vocalists on Tuesday for a “In Memoriam” piece that is supposed to air on the same day. “Fire and Rain” singer James Taylor’s scheduled performance was canceled on the first day of the DNC.

Chicago-born rapper “Common” was also seen practicing his song “Fortunate,” which features musician Pete Rock.

Democrat lawyer and politician Angela Alsobrooks is similarly scheduled to take the stage on Tuesday as she is attempting to become the first Black woman representing Maryland to be appointed to the U.S. Senate.

Around “20.3 million viewers tuned into the DNC on Monday,” according to CNN.

Day 2 programming begins at 5:30 p.m. CT., 6:30 p.m. ET., or 3:30 PT., The schedule was pushed up a little bit as the speeches on Day 1 continued into the early hours of Tuesday.

Next up at the Democratic convention: Republican speakers

(CNN) — It won’t just be Democrats speaking at their convention in Chicago this week. Several Republicans have also received key speaking spots.

While some of the biggest names among Republicans opposed to Donald Trump have remained on the sidelines, others will be taking to the United Center stage throughout the the week to lay out the case for why they’re there – and why they think other conservatives should join them in voting for Kamala Harris .

Two prominent speakers are from key battleground states: John Giles , the mayor of Mesa, Arizona, and Geoff Duncan , the former lieutenant governor of Georgia.

Both have already endorsed Harris. They’ll be joined by Olivia Troye , a former Trump White House national security official who joined Harris for an event in Michigan just a few days before Joe Biden dropped out of the race. CNN previously reported that former Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger will speak on Thursday evening ahead of Harris. (Both Duncan and Kinzinger are CNN contributors.)

“I’ve been a Republican all my life. But since Donald Trump refused to accept the results of the 2020 election, the Republican Party has spiraled further and further into political extremism,” Giles said.

Former Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a Republican who spoke at the 2020 Democratic convention by video, will not speak at this year’s gathering.

Liz Cheney , the former No. 3 House Republican who broke with Trump after January 6 and calls his return to power a threat to the Constitution, is not expected to speak. She posted on social media over the weekend about going to a Taylor Swift concert in the United Kingdom with her daughter, and a spokesperson did not return a request for comment about her plans. Her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, has said that “there has never been a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump” but has not commented on this year’s election.

George W. Bush, the only other living Republican president, has been critical of Trump in private but has also not spoken publicly about how he’ll vote.

But the Harris campaign is trying to keep the focus on more regular Republicans who have been turned away by Trump. The convention will also include a video from former MAGA activist Rich Logis and remarks from Kyle Sweetser, a Republican from Alabama.

“We will be putting patriotic Republicans front and center in our convention programming to explain, in their own words, why they are putting country first and supporting Vice President Harris,” said Austin Weatherford, the campaign’s national engagement director for Republicans for Harris.

Appealing to Republicans over protecting democracy was a key part of Biden’s strategy before he ended his reelection bid. It’s less front and center for Harris, but the numbers remain the same: There are enough anti-Trump Republicans in each of the battleground states to make up the margin of victory in races that are expected to be tight.

“There is a place in our coalition for voters who reject the extremism of Donald Trump and want to protect our democracy,” a Harris-Walz campaign aide said.

Justice to monitor Alaska primary election for compliance with language requirements

The U.S. Justice Department plans to monitor operations at polling places in parts of rural Alaska on Tuesday, the state’s primary election day, for compliance with the federal Voting Rights Act.

Monitors have been assigned to majority-Native districts to check for compliance with the requirements for language translations and assistance, including  provisions  concerning different Yup’ik dialects, the department said on Monday.

The sites selected are the Bethel Census Area, Dillingham Census Area, Kusilvak Census Area, Nome Census Area and North Slope Borough.

Tuesday’s monitoring is similar to efforts in  previous elections .

In the past, Yup’ik speakers did not get adequate assistance when they voted in Alaska elections, a federal court found. A 2013  federal lawsuit  filed by Yup’ik speakers resulted in a 2014 ruling in favor of the plaintiffs. A 2015 settlement agreement followed, and that agreement was extended last year, with terms to remain in place through 2026, according to the Native American Rights Fund.

Other violations in past Alaska elections concern  access for disabled voters , according to the Justice Department. A department investigation found that some polling sites and online resources failed to adequately serve disabled Alaskans trying to vote in 2022 and 2024. The Justice Department called for the Division of Elections to improve conditions at cited polling stations and update its online information.

Cubic feet per minute, known as CFM, is how air movement is measured.  Choose a fan that can move at least 1 CFM per square foot.
