How Is Writing Graded?

When professors grade papers, they use general writing standards to critique your written work. However, a more detailed insight into what professors are looking for can be helpful as you assess your own writing. Though the evaluation process of every professor is unique, there are some common evaluative standards that professors use.

The assessment table below represents the standards professors often use as they evaluate a paper.

Understanding the Assignment

  • The student demonstrates an understanding of the assignment.
  • The student demonstrates mastery of the skills and techniques needed to complete the assignment.
  • The student demonstrates an understanding of the readings and other source material relevant to the assignment.
  • The student indicates knowledge of the paper’s subject matter.
  • The student makes the paper’s subject matter accessible to the reader.
  • The student has supplied a single, appropriate thesis.
  • The audience is targeted properly.
  • The purpose of the paper’s content is clear.

Organization

  • The student’s organization strategy and method are clear.
  • The organization is logical and follows a clear sequence.
  • The controlling idea is sufficiently developed.
  • The major and minor supporting points are clearly defined for the reader.
  • The introduction, transitions, and conclusion are clear, logical, and contain relevant information.
  • The student’s diction is appropriate to the audience and its level of technical expertise.
  • The level of detail presented throughout the paper is appropriate and consistent.
  • The overall tone is consistent and appropriate to the audience and subject matter.
  • The document design and presentation are appropriate to the audience and subject matter.

Sentence-level Writing

  • The sentences are structured effectively and correctly.
  • The document fits the expected format, and the appearance is professional.
  • The grammar and punctuation are correct.
