Introduction: Make DIY Homework Writing Machine at Home
Drawing Robot/Pen Plotter/Drawing Machine is an Open Hardware version of the famous machine AxiDraw which it is a pen plotter, capable of writing or drawing on almost any flat surface. It can write with pens, permanent markers, pencils, and other writing implements to handle an endless variety of applications.
Its unique design features a writing head that extends beyond the machine, making it possible to draw on objects bigger than the machine itself. The biggest advantage of the machine is that it can be placed over the book because of the core XY extending design of the machine.
This Drawing Robot/Pen Plotter/Drawing Machine is similar to the commercially available AxiDraw. It is powered by an Arduino Uno controller, uses a CNC Shield, and GRBL firmware
The cost to build the Drawing Robot is between $75 depending on where you buy your parts and whether you already own some of the parts such as the Arduino.
You can find all of my projects on https://www.diyprojectslab.com/
Maximum drawing area 24 * 30 CM.

Step 2: 3D Printing
PLA is fine for this design. I print at 200C on BuildTak. None of the parts require rafts or brims. I suggest supports only for the pen holder and the Z axis end plate which is standing up.
Download the files from Thingiverse
Open the 3D models in Cura or any other slicer.
Use 75% infill on all the parts (An infill of 70 – 100% will work as well)
Printed all the parts with 0.10 – 0.20 mm layer height
Printed with PLA
Use supports on the Penholder, Slider, X_Support_L and the X_Support_R
Note: The longest part took around 10hrs and the shortest took 30 minutes to print
Step 3: Assemble the X-Axis
Now take the threaded rod and insert it in the hole below. Feed a 5/16in washer and 5/16in nut on both sides of the x-support part
Remember that you need (2) 350mm and (2) 450mm long linear rods
Take the (2) 450mm linear rods and insert them into either x-support part
- Use may need to use a round file to smooth out the holes that you insert them in
- Also, you can use a rubber mallet to help insert the rods
Step 4: Assemble the X-Axis Bearing
Slide the clamshell through the 450mm (X-axis) linear rods Use a rubber mallet again to attach the last X-support on the linear rods Make sure that the rods stick out equally on both sides Slide the other end of the threaded rod through the hole on the X-support Put on the last set of nuts and washers to hold the X-support in place Now that the X-axis is complete, you can use (2) Phillips M3-0.5 x 16mm screws per X-support to help keep the linear rods from sliding
Now you want to push the LM8UU bearings into their place on the top and bottom clamshell (The top and bottom clamshell take (4) bearings each)
Take (4) 624zz bearings and push them through the 3D-printed idler pulleys. Leave the 5th bearing for later when you assemble the Y-axis
Assemble the X-Axis (Carriage)
- Get (4) M3-0.5 x 20mm screws, (4) M3 nuts, (4) M3 washers and (4) 624zz bearings with the idler pulleys installed
- Take one screw and feed a washer through it, the washer will rest on the bearing. The nut will be at the bottom of the carriage, which will secure the bearing in place
Assemble the X-Axis (X-Support)
- Slide the clamshell through the 450mm (X-axis) linear rods
- Use a rubber mallet again to attach the last X-support on the linear rods
- Make sure that the rods stick out equally on both sides
- Slide the other end of the threaded rod through the hole on the X-support
- Put on the last set of nuts and washers to hold the X-support in place
- Now that the X-axis is complete, you can use (2) Phillips M3-0.5 x 16mm screws per X-support to help keep the linear rods from sliding
Step 5: Assemble the Y-Axis
- Slide the the linear rods/Y-back piece through the LM8UU bearings and attach the Y-front piece using a rubber mallet
- Take the (2) 350mm linear rods and insert them the Y-back piece by using a rubber mallet
- Get (1) M4-0.5 x 35 screw, (1) M4 nut and the 5th 624zz bearing
- Get (2) M3-0.5 x 16 screws to secure the linear rods
- Slide in the bearing when inserting the screw through the Y-back piece
Step 6: Assemble the X-Y Axis (Belt)
Use a pair of needle nose pliers to help guide the GT2 belt more easily through the clamshell Take the two ends of the belt and slide them through the “teeth” on the Base Slider The belt should be tight and not loose Note that once the GT2 belt is on, it is normal for the clamshell not to move easily
- Use a pair of needle nose pliers to help guide the GT2 belt more easily through the clamshell
- Take the two ends of the belt and slide them through the “teeth” on the Base Slider
- The belt should be tight and not loose
- Note that once the GT2 belt is on, it is normal for the clamshell not to move easily
Step 7: Assemble the Z-Axis
Get (2) 3mm linear rods and the following 3D printed parts (Slider, Pen Holder, Base Slide, 3MM Metric Thumb Screw) Get (1) Hex M3-0.5 x 20mm screw and the Metric Thumb Screw and push them together. Use superglue to keep it together. Get (3) M3-0.5 x 16mm screws which you will use the secure the Base Slide to the Y-Front part. You may need to use (3) M3-0.5 nuts in order to hold it in place Push the Slider and Pen Holder together to make one piece Now take that new part and the (2) 3mm linear rods and slide the rods through the holes. Place a small spring in between the two parts so there is a little bit of pressure to lift the Slider. You may need to cut the spring a bit until there is an adequate amount of pressure on the slider.

Step 8: ELECTRONICS
To find the coils of the stepper motors, use a multimeter. If there's resistance between the two wires, you have a coil. On the schematic, the coils are represented by two wires of the same color.
ELECTRONICS
i prefer you can use Arduino uno CNC Shield
Ready to your all circuit
1) 4pcs A4988 Stepper Motor Driver
2) Expansion Board A4988 Driver
3)Arduino UNO First of all take hit sink and stick on A4988 motor Driver.
4pcs A4988 Stepper motor driver connect on expansion board A4988 driver module, then connect the arduino with expansion board and connect all wiring The shield also has a built-in micro stepping control - meaning that instead of using full steps or half steps like a large CNC would do, we can make the motors move by 1/16 or 1/32 of a step to make the laser move with the maximal precision possible. However, the motors will consume more electricity: they will get hot quicker.
To use the micro stepping modes, short some of the mode pins together. Different combinations give different resolutions. Take a look at the chart for the different configurations possible. When the shield is programmed, add the A4988 drivers to it and wire up the rest of the electronics.
Step 9: SOFTWARE
Inkscape which is the graphics design software (draw or import graphics)
Inkscape MI GRBL Extension (convert graphics to G-Code)Universal G Code Sender (sends the G-Code to the robot causing drawing motion)GRBL which is the Arduino firmware (programmed into the Arduino Uno)

i constructed all the machine but when i press X+ the both X and Y axis are moving what is the problem
double check the steppers wiring
Have you solved it? I have the same problem with my machine, when I press X+, it’s necessary both motors move at same time, but, only one of them move…
Did you solve this problem?
Same problem how to solve ,?
Is it true that you didn’t use the microswitches in the final design?
Hello how to co figurę this machine to RUN on GRBL. What I mean is that GRBL interprets commands for x axis and y axis independently and if I look on your belt diagram it looks like both Motors have to run at the same time in order to move the carriage along y axis… How did you do that?
Have you solved it?
Thank you, thank you. It’s a very good built.
Is it possible to modify it to draw using brush ang oil based paint ?
Could you please tell what software/plug in and which version do you use to generate g-code for this machine?
Hello, what is the width of your belt? 6mm or 10mm? Thanks!

/ / / Video: Diy Homework Machine From A Pc Dvd Writer The machine uses a gantry to move the writing tip along the X and Y axes. The flexible-nib calligraphy pen is mounted on a sprocket which rotates the tip onto the writing surface, taking care of the third axis. You can use the machine to do pretty much whatever you can dream up from drawing fancy artwork to extensive calligraphy on letters. Combined with personal handwriting software, you could even use the plotter to write a letter in your own handwriting without all of the efforts. You will need the following components before you can make your very own robot-assistant: Check out the video below for a 'how to' guide and enjoy! |

How to Build a DIY Homework Station
November 16, 2020.
It’s been a weird year. In March 2020, everything shut down. We transitioned to “online learning” and spent A LOT of time at home. We realized that with two grade-schoolers at home, we needed a dedicated homework space. Our two girls and both have small rooms (in our small house), so fitting a desk in their bedrooms wasn’t ideal. We decided to renovate our family room space in the basement and add a DIY homework station into an unused nook in the back of the room!
Estimated reading time: 6 minutes

Table of Contents
A Built-In Homework Nook
We didn’t want to spend a fortune, so we hacked some Ikea pieces to make a built-in homework station with plenty of space for both kids. They adore having their own workstations complete with file folder systems, drawers and pegboards! It made me so happy to see them just a little more excited about staying home.
The layout of our basement space was actually quite awkward (you can see the full renovation and details HERE ). We put the homework station in a weird little nook at the back of the room. The space has a low ceiling (ductwork runs above it) and no lighting, so we didn’t really use it at all before! It was just wasted space.
I love how finished it makes the room feel now and how much function it adds! The girls can come down here and do their homework and then lounge and relax when they are finished.
We used EKBACKEN Ash effect laminate counters from Ikea as desktops. They are inexpensive but surprisingly heavy and nicely made.
TIP: I’ve seen quite a few DIY homework spaces that use shelves as desktops. I personally don’t find this ergonomic. The space is too narrow to work comfortably. The 24″ deep countertop gives enough space to really spread out and work without feeling cramped.
The space is about 11 ft wide so we had to use two countertop pieces and cut them down to size. We put the cut ends against the wall so that the finished, uncut edges would make a clean line/join in the centre. We added a support bracket in the middle to help hold the weight, and rested the pieces on 1 x 2 supports fastened to the walls underneath.
Each station is exactly the same (because… siblings) with a SKADIS peg board . I love the SKADIS system . It has so many fun options to add to the pegboards to store pens, papers etc…You can move the accessories easily as well, which is nice since my girls love to organize things! There are even little clips to hang their artwork or current math or spelling words.
Office Drawer Units/ Filing Cabinets
The ALEX drawer units have their own built in filing drawer, which is perfect for storing art projects, report cards or anything else we want to save over the school year.
Floating Shelves
We added some white LACK floating shelves from Ikea for extra storage above each desk. We did the same thing that we did with the counter and used 2 shelves cut down to fit the length. They come with hardware that attaches to the wall to mount them without brackets.
We were going to add built-in wall sconces and decided that we would just keep it simple and use traditional desk lamps! These were actually in our bedroom before, but they work much better in this space! I love when you can shop your home and save money!!
This DIY homework station was quick, easy and didn’t break the bank. But it’s made a huge difference in how we use this space…aka we actually use it now!!
I hope this DIY homework station gives you some inspiration for using an overlooked space in your own home! You can add function to pretty much every inch of space, no matter how awkward with a little creative thinking!

Hey there! Love this — we’re doing something similar in our basement thanks to your inspiration! Just wondering, what type of bracket did you use for the middle? We only have a wall on one side so we’ll need a bracket for the middle and one for the other end too. Love the triangle look of yours cuz it seems sturdy and adds to the style.

How To Create The Ultimate Homework Station (So You’ll Never Have To Ask “Is Your Homework Done?” Ever Again)
- Pinterest 7.3K
- Facebook 333
Homework can be the bane of the school year and can often be the source of much drama in the household. “Where is my notebook?” “Have you seen my backpack?” and of course the often-used “Is your homework done?!”
Instead of playing into the drama, why not make your home set-up a point of calm amongst the chaos, and set your children up for success by creating (or updating) an incredible homework station.
Teaching your kids how to keep themselves organized is such an important skill. Tasks such as time management, tidying workspaces, and project preparation will not only help them with school work, but also with life and the challenges it brings as they continue to learn and grow.
As organizers, we have used these tips to create homework stations for elementary school aged children onwards and they can easily be applied to families looking to refresh their existing systems for kids of any age.
And big bonus – your kids will love their new work space so much, they may actually be excited to do their homework!

PIN for when you’re ready to organize!
FIND THE SPACE
First things first, you’ll need to find a room or space in your home that works for your child. Depending on their age and how much assistance they require, this spot could be in a communal room (think kitchen or family room) or at a desk in their own room.
The ultimate goal is to get them working in a proper set-up with a table and chair instead of working from their lap – this way they establish good habits, can properly work on their handwriting and have room to spread out all their materials.
To spark your creative juices, we’ve pulled 30 of our favorite homework station examples to serve as inspiration:

MAKE IT COMFORTABLE + FUNCTIONAL
Select a good desk chair that is both comfy and supportive. You don’t want a chair to be the reason that your kids are gravitating to doing their homework on the couch!
A few of our all-time favorite options:
- PBTeen Ergo Chair
- Land of Nod Class Act Mint & Gold Desk Chair
- Land of Nod Toto Desk Chair
- PBTeen Emily & Meritt Bed of Roses Airgo Chair
- PBTeen Rockin’ Roller Desk Chair
- Walmart Kids Retro Molded Chair
- Home Depot Modway Edge Office Chair
- PBTeen Northfield Wingback Chair
- Walmart Urban Shop Swivel Mesh Chair
Although it may seem obvious, having a trash/recycle can near their desk will encourage them to not only throw out their old papers, but also (perhaps with a little coaxing), to purge the garbage from their backpacks on a regular basis.
GET IT ORGANIZED
Wall Organization
Hang up a cork, magnetic or pin board for your kids to put papers, reminders and a calendar. This is a space that should be within reach of their desk so they can easily add/remove important items on a regular basis. It can also give them a chance to decorate and personalize their space – hopefully inspiring them to actually use it!
There are so many amazing wall organizing systems available – take a look at some of these incredible ideas:

Having supplies within reach of the workspace is key to their productivity (there needn’t be twelve trips around the house looking for the tools they need to complete each project!).
If there’s room on their workspace, consider keeping their supplies neatly organized in one of these nifty containers:
- Land of Nod I Could’ve Bin a Things Bin
- PBKids Rainbow Shaped Pencil Holder
- PBKids Candy Canisters
- Land of Nod Perfect Pitch Storage Caddy
- Lani Ang 4-Grid Desktop Organizer
- PBKids Printed Metal Lazy Susans
- Container Store Acrylic Accessory Drawers
- Land of Nod Multicolor Desk Accessories
- Target Room Essentials Desktop Storage Unit
A version of these supply caddies can also be made for the road as there are often times that your child won’t be home when it comes time for homework (ie. at a sibling’s after-school sporting event!). Capitalize on that travel and waiting time with a to-go bag of their most needed supplies. We especially love this portable storage one .
Make cleanup easier on everyone by using labels on your supply containers/caddy. This will help teach your children how to maintain their space and hopefully put an end to the continuing cycle of them asking where to put things when they are cleaning up.
We love this no-fuss, inexpensive labeler and also check out these cool reusable chalk board labels .
As your kids get older, homework will often require the use of technology, which means cord and charging chaos! Keep their space tidy from the cord clutter by using some of these ingenious products and hacks to help cables stay neat and handy for when it’s time to plug in and charge.

ESTABLISH GOOD HABITS
Time Management
Give them the tools to manage their own time by keeping a clock or timer at their workspace . Setting time limits for each subject can help them stay on track and is a life skill that will bode them well in life after school.
If you haven’t heard of the Time Timer before, it is an ingenious tool that visually shows your child how much time they have left for a certain task. It is easy for them to set themselves, and they don’t need to know how to read a clock in order to understand the concept of time diminishing.
Subject Management
Help keep your child’s different subjects organized with color-coded file folders (1) — for instance, green for science, blue for english, etc. — so they can keep their notes organized on their desk and in their book bag.
A simple file folder organizer can help keep their most important documents at arm’s reach ( this one (2) even has some extra storage underneath!). If there’s not enough room on your desk for one, try this nifty cascade folder (3) that you can hang on the wall when working, and collapse and bring with you on-the-go!
In/Out Parent Bins
There’s always a plethora of school paperwork and updates that need to get safely into your hands. Consider setting up some in and out bins where your kids can drop off any papers that need to be signed or seen by a parent. You can then go through them each night, and put any that need to be returned to school in the “out” bin, ready for them to pick up in the morning and pack in their backpacks. With a little practice, this can be an extremely effective method that can be used all the way through high school!
It is vital for older children to start learning how to manage their own calendar. Whether it’s a desktop planner , or a large dry-erase calendar that can hang on the wall, it’s a great way for them to visually see what tests and assignments are coming up, so they can manage their time accordingly.
Form a Routine
Now you’ve got their work space expertly organized, help your child form a routine of when they do their homework. It could be as soon as they come home after a snack, after ½ an hour of “down” time or after dinner. Whatever you decide, help them stick to their routine for the first few weeks by setting a timer or providing gentle guidance. Hopefully with their new homework station in place, they’ll feel a real sense of ownership and be excited to get down to work!
After their homework is complete, consider helping them put a routine in place that will help make the morning rush less hectic. It could be as simple as establishing a nightly backpack check ensuring that all the books and papers needed for the next day are all packed away. Or having them place their packed backpack in a designated space (preferably near the door!) so there isn’t a mad scramble to find it in the morning.

13 Fun Homework Ideas: The Best Ways To Make Homework Fun For Kids Quickly & Easily
Sophie Bartlett
Figuring out how to make homework fun can be a tricky task for parents.
Does it feel like you’re constantly nagging your kids to do their homework? If your answer is yes, know that we’ve all been there! It’s natural for parents to want their children to progress and do well in school, but after an entire day of paper, pencils, and books many youngsters will resist getting on with their homework – and that’s putting it mildly!
Fun Math Games and Activities Packs for Kindergarten to 5th Grade
Individual packs for Kindergarten to Grade 5 containing fun math games and activities.
Top Tips To Make Homework Fun:
1. work together, 2. use rewards and incentives, 3. make them a snack, 4. make it visual, 5. try different learning apps, 6. set up a homework play date, 7. go outside, 8. turn it into a game, 9. let them play teacher, 10. use a timer, 11. create a special homework space, 12. remember to be positive, 13. get help if you need it.
Thankfully, there are ways of making homework less boring and that are a little bit more fun for your child. Whether they need to practice spelling, learn their times tables or revise for an important exam, our top fun homework ideas will help you magically take the ‘work’ out of homework.
Adults often work best in the company of others, and the same can be said of kids, so why not sit with your child while they’re studying and get on with some of your own work or life admin?
Whether you’re returning emails or doing your online banking, creating a shared workspace and modeling focused work is a great way to spend quality time together while they complete their homework. Win-win!
Quick win : While your child is tackling their fractions homework, you could sit down with them and take a look through your finances.
Rewards and incentives are great when it comes to getting your children to follow your household rules and routines, and homework is no different. Things like stickers or the promise of time on their iPad or games console for slightly older children can all work wonders in getting them to do their homework without a battle.
Quick win: For every few questions they answer they could get a minute of screen time!
Let’s face it: A hungry child is an unfocused, unmotivated and unhappy child.
Most children come out of school ravenous, so let them nibble on a nutritious after-school snack while they get on with homework; things like popcorn, apple slices, grapes, or crackers and cheese are all great snack options.
If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, Active for Life has a list of healthy after-school snack ideas and recipes to try.
Quick win: One of the best brain foods for kids is a nice and crispy apple! So when your child is craving something sweet just cut up an apple and let them munch away.
Help to eliminate the late night ‘Oh, I forgot to do that’, and create a weekly homework chart so your child can see what they have to do each day and check off each ‘to do’ task as it’s been completed.
Again, Pinterest has some great free printables to help keep kids organized. Get them involved by letting them color it, or decorate it with their favorite stickers, and pin it up somewhere at their height, where they will see it easily every day as a reminder. Some exciting new stationery and colorful pens might help too.
Quick win: An easy way to make homework fun is to grab a piece of paper and get your child to draw out and decorate a ‘homework chart’ consisting of 5 days. Stick it on the fridge and add a sticker to each day after they’ve done their homework, when they’ve collected 5 stickers they get a treat!
If your child prefers to be online, there are some great online apps around that children will have fun using, yet encourage learning too. Here are our favorite free math websites for example. Speak to your child’s teacher too and see which apps the children use in school so you can support what they’re doing at home.
Quick win: One of our favorite websites that makes homework fun is Tang Math !
Holding a homework playdate where your child can invite one of their best school buddies over to do homework together can be a great way for them to learn and make sure the work gets done, especially older children in elementary school.
Plus, it’s likely that their parents will be delighted!
Younger children may need a bit more support and guidance but can still gain a lot from the experience of learning together with a friend – think of this as a mini-educational play date for them.
Quick win: Let your child and their friend play for a while, and then get them to work through their homework with the incentive of a yummy ‘ice cream party’ when they’ve completed all of their homework.
If the weather allows, create a comfortable outside study space and allow your child to do their homework outdoors.
The fresh air can help kids with their concentration if they’ve been stuck in a classroom all day, and studies also show that being outside, closer to nature, can increase productivity. The reward of a quick game of Frisbee or a kick-around of a soccer ball between tasks will help them stay motivated too.
Who said home learning had to be boring? If children enjoy what they’re learning, they’re more likely to remember what they’re being taught, so turn their learning into a fun game. Using sweets like Smarties to help with math and number work can turn the experience from a chore into a treat. If they get the right answer, they get to eat some!
Another trick that you can use when your child is learning spellings is to write them in shaving cream or in magnetic letters. It sounds simple but we can guarantee that it will make homework a lot more fun for your child.
These math games for kids and times tables games are a great place to start.
Quick win: If you’re looking for some fun homework ideas then check out this simple multiplication activity you can do at home, it’ll even get in one of your child’s five a day!
Make another fun homework game by creating your own mini-classroom and letting your child step into the role of teacher.
Have your child explain a concept to you as a teacher, as you, or their sibling, play the role of the student. This game works particularly well with subjects that require theory, like Science for example, as it will improve their understanding of the concept and build logic and reasoning skills.
Quick win: Make homework fun by getting your child to choose their favorite teddies and toys and setting them up in their own mini- classroom. Start off with registration, ‘mom’ ‘present’, ‘mr teddy’ ‘here’ etc. You’ll soon notice that your child is growing in confidence regardless of the topic as children love playing teacher!
Some children may have difficulty working for prolonged periods of time without a break, so using a timer can be great for getting them to complete homework without whining. For example, if your child is given 20 math problems for homework, you can say “Complete the first 10 questions, then we’ll take a 5-minute break, then complete the next 10 questions”.
Many children will need a mental break and will work more effectively when given the opportunity to take one. At the end of the task, they get to pick an activity of their choice. If your child gets easily distracted, a timer game can work well to keep them focused on the task in hand.
Quick win: Put the timer on your phone so that your child can see the countdown while they’re working.
A special study space can make homework more fun and help motivate your child to get it done! Choose a space in your house that’s least likely to distract your child, and create simple, organized, and kid-friendly homework.
You could hang up some of their artwork above the desk, and have all their school essentials nearby so everything is close to hand.
Quick win: Make sure that they aren’t surrounded by things that will distract them. Televisions and iPads are a no go at homework time!
Remember to always be upbeat and positive about school and the importance of their homework. Give your child lots of praise and encouragement about how well they’re doing to help them stay motivated and on track.
Quick win: After every homework session, spend five minutes talking through what your child has accomplished. If you’re running out of activities to do, have a look at our list of home learning packs – all free to download.
Homework can be frustrating if your child doesn’t understand the material or gets bored easily. If your child is struggling, get them some expert help!

Gimkit Tutorial For Teachers – How to Use in 5 Easy Steps
Discover how to utilize Gimkit , a game-based learning software that distinguishes itself from other game-based programs because of its play structure designed around a game structure. Gamification is one of the most successful approaches for increasing engagement and mixing things up, while also aiding information retention for students.
In this how to use Gimkit tutorial we are going to show you how to construct Gimkit question kits and how each of the gameplay modes operates. You’ll learn how to play with popular Gimkit game modes such as Humans versus Zombies, Boss Battle, The Floor is Lava, Infinity Mode, Trust No One, and Draw That.
If you’ve not yet used Gimkit make sure to bookmark this page as it is constantly updated with helpful tips and advice for classroom activities for teachers. Let’s get started.
What is Gimkit?
Gimkit was designed for students by a then current high school student to help them engage with and interact with their learning experience. The founder, Josh Feinsilber as part of a class project developed a way to combine gamification, strategic decision making and critical thinking skills that could be applied to any discipline. From math and science to history or philosophy.
How to get started with Gimkit
Unlike Blooket , Gimkit is not totally free. When you sign up you get a free 14 day trial of Gimkit Pro which is an unlimited version of the software. If after 14 days you don’t upgrade your account you’ll be moved in the free version, Gimkit Basic.
The basic version only allows for 5 players which if you’re an educator is not enough. But what we do like about this 14 day trial is that it is enough time for you to get full access to the software, learn it and try it out in class to see if it is right for you.
Create an account
The signup process is pretty straight forward. All you have to do is enter in an email, password and user name. You’ll be prompted to either select student or educator when creating your account for the first time. Then, you’ll be able to select your country and then school based on the zip code. You can also choose what grade level and subject though this is not too important with the on-boarding process.
Create a Gimkit
The “kit” in Gimkit simply means your questions. A kit contains all of the questions & terms you’ll want students to learn & review when you play. You can create your own, or find existing kits made by other teachers. This is why as part of the on-boarding process they want you to set your grade level, location and school.
As you create content for Gimkit, other teachers are able to leverage those questions in their class and Gimkit gets free high quality content that only adds to their underlying selling point to get you to upgrade. A win-win for all involved.
Part of what makes Gimkit special are all of the different game modes you can explore with your students. Try out their selection of modes to see what your students like most and don’t forget you can assign a kit as homework.
Create new kit
Once logged into your account you can search for already created kits or you can create your own. To create your own click on the “new kit” button then choose what subject it is for as well as a cover image. Gimkit links to Unsplash by default but if you want to create your own custom image thumbnails you can.
Add question
This feature allows you to manually input a question. You can add an image as well as set multiple choice answers or have the students type in the correct answer. You can also add audio to your Gimkit if you prefer to read out loud the question (see our best microphones for teachers guide).
Create with flashcards
Flashcards are quick and easy way to create material for your students. Gimkit flashcards are designed in an efficient way where you input a question and Gimkit will automatically come up with incorrect answers. Allowing you the teacher to spend less time creating content. Perfect if you’re looking to create a quick assignment or activity.
Collaborate with kitCollab
KitCollab allows anybody with Gimkit account (free or pro), including students, to contribute questions to your kit. With this collaborate feature you can now build a kit together in real-time, or asynchronously. This is ideal for a long term kit you plan on using in the future. Enable it today and let teachers and students contribute over time.
Add from question bank
As teachers create kits, Gimkit has taken these kits and broken them up into individual questions. By using the question bank feature you can quickly find high quality questions for different subjects to add to your Gimkit with ease.
Import from spreadsheet
This takes a little practice on how to format, but if you’re talented with using a spreadsheet software of your choice that can make CSV files then you can import that file into Gimkit and allow the software to do the proverbial heavy lifting.
Create a “class” for homework
Another helpful function of Gimkit is the ability for you to create a class for your Gimkit. Classes require your students to have a student account with Gimkit but the benefit is that you can make your kits only available to your students.
This is essential because otherwise any student with a join link could log into your live kit using an inappropriate name (students could simply share the log in code with their friends) and it forces your students to use their real names instead of something silly.
If you’re going to be using Gimkit for homework then you’ll love the class feature. Not only does it allow you to see how your students performed individually, it helps maintain class control.
Hosted game modes
Gimkit allows you to host a live game using different game modes. When setting up a live game you’ll be given a join link to share with your students. Students then use that join link and when everyone has logged into your game you can then click on the “start game” button.
There are an ever growing amount of game modes you can use for your kit. Currently these are your options:
- Capture the flag
- Boss battle
- Hidden mode
- Drained mode
- Super rich mode
- Humans vs zombies
- What is…
- Infinity mode
Try them all out. They each have a different premise and it makes for an enjoyable activity. Our favorite is “ draw that ” in which a student can not say the answer but must instead draw the answer and the other students have to guess what it is. As the teacher, you can adjust what questions are included in this mode as not every answer can always be translated into picture format.
Other modes are more classic in nature like “infinity mode” is all about collecting the infinity stones (from the Marvel Universe) first. In this mode students earn money and can purchase infinity stones which increase in price after each question. These stones are functionally power-ups and students can hide the stones they have and use them all at once in order to win the game.
“ The floor is lava ” stands out as well because it’s the only game mode that is entirely cooperative in which the entire class works to keep the class above the lava by answering questions correctly and fast.
Frequently Asked Questions
With Gimkit, there are a few questions that are commonly asked that we would like to address here so you understand everything there is to know about this platform as an educator.
How much does Gimkit Pro cost?
You get a 14 day free trial of Gimkit Pro upon signing up. After which you’ll need to pay $4.99 a month for full access. It’s worth the cost because the free version only allows 5 players. Decent enough for a fun activity with a few students but totally inadequate for a class of 20+ students.
Can I share my subscription with other teachers?
Sure, there is no inherent restriction to who can access your Gimkit account. What you can’t do is all log into Gimkit at the same time and host multiple games all at once.
Instead, use a common email amongst the teaching staff and access Gimkit per teacher, per class using the same log-in information.
Gimkit vs Blooket, which is best?
Both platforms are similar in that they provide interactive ways to display questions and class material as well as assign kits as homework. They also provide content from other teachers who have built “kits” on each platform.
Gimkit stands out though in the various game modes that are all quite different, the ability to use the flashcard feature to quickly create content, the collaboration built in with creating kits and the ever growing question bank. In short you should try both platforms and see which one is best for your teaching style.
How to play Gimkit conclusion
Gimkit offers a great way for teachers to engage their students in the classroom. The platform is easy to use and makes it possible for teachers to create dynamic, fun and interactive lessons that are both informative and entertaining.
With its growing user base and content pool, Gimkit is sure to become an even more popular tool for educators everywhere. Have you tried using Gimkit in your own classroom? What were your impressions?

Home School: A Complete Guide to Making Your First Home Your Own
When I moved into my first apartment with my partner earlier this summer, I didn't know what I was getting into. From apartment hunting to decorating our new home, every stage of the process was an adventure. My partner had moved plenty of times before and was prepared to lead the way, but I wanted to be as involved as I possibly could.
It was definitely a learning process: from asking our broker to amend language in our lease, to rushing to buy furniture that we weren't quite in love with so we had somewhere to sit, to doing our first deep cleaning after we moved all of our boxes in. And believe me, there were plenty of headaches along the way.
I was fortunate enough to have learned from some of the mistakes of others (thank you, TikTok), so we've rounded up some key things to keep in mind for your journey to your first home, whether it's a shared apartment or your very own house.
But first, our editors share their tips that made their first apartments feel more like home.
7 Editors on How They Made Their First Apartments Feel Like Home
Milles Studio / Stocksy
I knew that I’d be moving out of my mom’s home about seven months before the move actually came around. At the beginning of the year, I hit the ground running and caught as many post-Christmas deals as possible on essentials I knew I'd need, like bedding and kitchen essentials.
My mom provided most of the comforts of my childhood home of 24 years, so I thought everything I had there was important for my new place. But it became painfully obvious very quickly that many things that felt like "needs" for me were actually "wants."
Furnishing and decorating your new place can be costly, especially if you’re moving out of your parents’ home and are essentially starting from scratch. Planning ahead can save you lots of money in the long run, so we’ve made the planning simple for you. Between shopping at the right time of year to catch the best deals, or even finding your secret go-to place for unique decor, we've got you covered.

Getting into your house or apartment is just the first step—making it feel like a home is much harder. Even from our first deep clean on move-in day, I knew our apartment would be somewhere my partner and I had to split 50/50 in all aspects. From cleaning, to designing, to even speaking with our landlord—everything needed to be divided.
I already had a sense of my own design style, but my partner was discovering his style while we were actively shopping for our space. So, inevitably, we had to make a couple compromises to create a space that felt uniquely like us rather than just like me or him.

Going from a space where you shared the upkeep of your home to living on your own can be very overwhelming. Tasks that were once split in half (or even thirds or fourths) are now solely up to you—and cleaning is one of them.
If you’ve ever found yourself wondering “where did all this dust come from,” you’re not alone. We’ve created a guide that breaks down cleaning by room, highlighting the most important parts to prioritize while keeping your space tidy. And it's actually easy to follow, we promise.

Maia Reficco and Kit Connor are both making their Broadway debuts this starry season !
When the Pretty Little Liars alum, 24, opened up to PEOPLE last month about taking over the role of Eurydice in the Broadway production of Hadestown , opposite Jordan Fisher , she also spoke about her former costar Connor, 20, coming to the Main Stem this month in the upcoming production of Romeo + Juliet .
"He's so wonderful," Reficco says of Connor, whom she stars opposite in the highly anticipated film adaptation of A Cuban Girl's Guide to Tea and Tomorrow . "I can't wait for him to do his debut."
"It's so crazy how timing works," she adds, about the two sharing the Broadway board this fall.
Michaelah Reynolds
Reficco tells PEOPLE she felt "very excited" when she saw Connor's announcement, which came roughly a month after her own for Anaïs Mitchell’s eight-time Tony Award-winning musical.
He'll be starring opposite Rachel Zegler in Sam Gold's production of the William Shakespeare tragic romance. Performances begin Thursday, Sept. 26 at the Circle in the Square Theatre, ahead of an official opening on Thursday, Oct. 24. The show is currently scheduled for a strictly limited engagement through Sunday, Feb. 16, 2025.
Reflecting on her time so far on the Broadway stage, which began in July and will continue through Jan. 12, 2025, Reficco encourages Connor to "enjoy it!"
"It goes by so fast. I'm already a month into my run and it feels like I opened last night," she says when asked if there's any advice she'd like to rely to her colleague. "So that's my biggest thing for anybody who does theater. Enjoy it. Allow yourself to feel every emotion. Because it will inevitably remind you of why you love doing what you do."

The two share a budding romance in A Cuban Girl's Guide to Tea and Tomorrow , which does not yet have a release date despite wrapping filming in September 2022. The romantic flick is based on the New York Times bestselling novel by Laura Taylor Namey and follows a woman after the loss of her grandmother.
"Lila leaves her life at Abuela’s Cuban bakery in Miami to spend the summer cooking at her aunt’s inn in Winchester. It’s there that she falls in love with the quaint British countryside, fusion cooking and a charming British tea shop clerk…ultimately using food as a way to bridge two cultures and heal her heart," reads a description of the movie, per Deadline .
In a 2022 interview with Teen Vogue , Reficco commented on her closeness with Connor while also sharing her love for his show, Heartstopper .
"Working with Kit was such a dream, he’s such a sweetheart, one of the most brilliant actors. We got along so well from the get-go," she said. "He’s become one of my favorite people. I was so excited to meet him because I loved [ Heartstopper ] beforehand, but after getting to work with him and learning from him, we became each other’s biggest cheerleaders."
Evan Zimmerman
As fans wait to see that film on the big screen, Reficco can currently be seen opposite KJ Apa , Eric Dane and Edward James Olmos in One Fast Move , streaming now on Prime Video. “It's a fun action-packed film with drama, love — the whole nine," Reficco says. "We had the best time shooting it, so I'm excited for the world to be able to see it."
And for those who do, Reficco expects to hear about it on the stage door, where night after night she's been interacting with fans showing her their support.
"It's crazy, it's such an honor," she says. First and foremost, I can't believe people stay to wait for me to come out, but they also stay with such love and such generous, beautiful, supportive energy. And getting to see their faces after the show? So many people are still crying when we go out! It's beautiful, it's so moving."

Giving a special shout-out to her Pretty Little Liar fans, the actress describes them as “so loyal.”
