With only six seconds to grab a recruiter’s attention, conventional wisdom might tell you to cut right to the chase when you write your resume , but that's not always the best way to go.

resume objectives: abstract animated image of how to write one

A lot of people say a resume objective wastes precious space. But if you craft it in a way that highlights your qualifications, skills, and fit for a role, an objective can actually enhance your resume by giving recruiters a sneak peek of your background which prompts them to keep reading.

What is a resume objective?

A resume objective is a brief synopsis of your professional journey. It’s placed at the top of your resume and sets the stage for what recruiters will read later on in the document. The goal of the objective is to introduce your qualifications, establish yourself as a fit for the role you’re applying to, and encourage recruiters to read the rest of your resume.

When to Use a Resume Objective

As a general rule, you should use a resume objective when you are early in your career, have little work experience, or you're making a career change.

Including a resume objective (sometimes called a professional summary) in your resume gives the prospective employer a snapshot of your qualifications and background, especially if you have more transferable skills than directly related ones. The resume objective is the perfect place to share how you'll be a great fit for the role you're applying for.

How to Write a Resume Objective

When recruiters read your resume, they want to know three things about you:

  • Whether you're qualified for the job
  • Whether you've made an impact at your company in your current or previous roles
  • Whether you'll make an impact on their company in the role you're applying for

If you can give them a clear answer for these questions within your resume objective, you're likely to leave a positive first impression and encourage them to read the rest of your resume.

Follow these steps to craft the perfect resume objective.

1. Use a resume objective template.

A resume objective template takes the guesswork out of customizing this section of your CV. Start with the basic one we have here and tailor it to your experience.

I am a [Descriptive Adjective] [Position Title] with [Number] years of experience seeking a challenging and fulfilling role at [Company Name] . Here, I can [contribute/do/apply] my [skills/knowledge/abilities] to [accomplish/achieve/improve] [specific goal/project/initiative] . I am a [character trait] team player with a passion for [specific interest] , eager to [learn/develop/grow] within a [dynamic/collaborative/innovative] environment.

When it's filled in, it'll read something like this:

"I am an accomplished data analyst with five years of experience seeking a challenging and fulfilling role at Big Data Agency. Here, I can contribute my technical data analysis skills to improve data quality and insights. I am a trustworthy team player with a passion for research, eager to lead and learn within a collaborative environment."

2. Read the job description.

Now that you have a foundation for your resume objective, we can tweak it to match the job description.

You've likely heard that it's imperative to customize your resume to the role description for the job you're applying for. That means your resume objective statement should also be customized.

Let's look at this sample job description and isolate some of the key points we'll want to highlight in the objective statement.

Job Title: Senior Data Analyst

Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled Senior Data Analyst to join our team. The ideal candidate will have experience analyzing complex data sets, developing reports, and communicating insights to stakeholders. In this role, you will work collaboratively with our team to analyze data, identify trends, and provide insights to help drive business decisions.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze complex data sets to identify trends and insights
  • Develop reports and data visualizations to effectively communicate findings to stakeholders
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to inform business decisions
  • Use statistical methods to analyze data and make recommendations for process improvements
  • Identify opportunities to automate and streamline data collection and analysis processes
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and best practices related to data analysis

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as mathematics, statistics, or computer science
  • Five years of experience in data analysis
  • Proficiency with SQL and data analysis tools
  • Experience with data visualization tools
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment

The job summary section of this role description describes a data analyst that can not only analyze complex data sets but communicate those insights to stakeholders who can make business decisions as a result of the analyst's findings. From start to finish, this role requires ownership of the data and results, so we'll want to highlight this in the resume objective.

3. Map your skills to the job requirements.

Keep in mind that we don't have to address every bullet of the job description in the resume objective, we should lean into overarching themes. That means, if you use communication and teamwork often in your day-to-day work, and your work regularly requires analysis of complex data sets that are used to make business decisions, it's a great idea to lead with these in your resume objective.

Soft skills like teamwork and communication are good to highlight along with the number of years experience you have practicing these skills.

With these key points in mind, the resume objective we started with might look like this now:

"I am a skilled data analyst with five years of experience seeking a Senior Data Analyst role at Big Data Agency. I have experience analyzing complex data sets, reporting my findings to stakeholders, and informing key business decisions. I am a team player who is comfortable working cross-collaboratively to uncover data insights that matter to the business's bottom line."

Tips for Writing a Resume Objective

  • Keep it short: Objectives should be 1-3 sentences max.
  • Be specific: Get specific about the role you are applying for, your skills, and how those skills and what impact those skills will have on the organization.
  • Tailor it: Your resume objective should be tailored to fit the role or company you are applying to.

What is a resume objective?

A resume objective is a one to two sentence summary about your goals and reasons for looking for your next role. You can also use it to highlight why you’re the best candidate for a role. Since people often tailor their resume to a specific position, you should consider tailoring your resume objective for every role you apply to as well, to help you land more interviews at the kind of companies you want.

When to use a resume objective

1. when you’re joining the workforce.

A resume objective can be helpful when joining the workforce as you can share your academic achievements and your goals for your first entry-level role out of school.

2. When you’re trying to highlight a niche

A resume objective can be helpful when you bring a very specific value add in a big industry. For example, if you’re a marketer who specializes in startups, you might highlight that specific call out in your resume objective, so people know it’s what you excel at.

3. When you’re making a career change

You often hear stories of people making drastic career changes like a teacher who becomes an HR manager or a nurse who joins the tech industry. Your resume objective would highlight this novel change while highlighting some transferable skills you’ve developed to help qualify you for the role you’re applying for.

4. When you’re moving to a new location

When you’re moving to a new city, a resume objective can help clarify why your previous work experience is in another location.

5. When you want to highlight a resume gap

With layoffs, family leave, or mental health leave, it’s common to sometimes have an extended gap on your resume. If you want to explain your reason for your resume gap, you could share it in your resume objective to help give you the consideration you need to re-enter the workforce.

How to write a resume objective

1. get to the point.

You only have about two sentences worth of space in your resume objective. So, when writing one, you’ll want to get to the point fast. For example, “An experienced marketer with over 10 years of experience who helps startups grow into household names”

2. Tailor it to the position you’re applying for

Your resume objective should be tailored for every job you apply to. You should highlight why you’re qualified for a role based on the job description you find online.

3. Lead with your biggest accomplishment

If you’ve had a big win in your career, highlighting it in your resume objective can help you stand out among other job seekers. For example, “A content marketer who’s generated over 30 million views in a single calendar year looking for a full-time position.”

4. Explain why you’re the best candidate

What’s your competitive advantage in the job search? Zero in on it for your resume objective. Share why you’re the most qualified candidate applying for a role to help you boost your chances of getting hired. For example, “A developer who’s built from the ground up three SaaS products that have been acquired in the last eight years.”

30+ Resume Objective Examples (Plus, Tips on How to Write Yours)

Getty Images

Resume objectives are a bit controversial. Some career experts see them as outdated, while others believe job seekers can still use them to their advantage. Although resume objective statements have slowly been replaced by resume summaries, they remain useful in certain situations—and that's why you should know how to write one, just in case.

For instance, if you're changing careers and your previous work experience doesn't quite match the new role you're after, an objective statement could help communicate your professional goals to the hiring manager. Likewise, if you're a recent graduate or looking to relocate, you could use this section of your resume to highlight these intentions.

We've gathered 32 resume objective examples—plus, some tips on how to craft one that grabs the hiring manager's attention.

What is a resume objective

A resume objective is a brief statement outlining your short-term career goals, usually one to two sentences long. It should be tailored to the specific job or industry you're pursuing and is placed at the top of your resume, just below the header.

What is a good objective for a resume, and when are they welcomed? That's what we'll show you in a moment.

When you should use a resume objective

Resume objectives aren't quite the norm these days, so they should be only used when you need to clarify why you're applying for that particular role or company. Here are three situations where using an objective statement is a good idea:

  • If you're doing a career pivot: A resume objective can guide recruiters on your career goals and prevent you from being disqualified when transitioning to a new field.
  • If you're changing locations: Applying for jobs outside your current state or city can leave recruiters uncertain about your location; a resume objective can clearly express your willingness to relocate.
  • If you're a recent graduate: Since you likely have little to no work experience to show, a resume objective can give a glimpse into who you are and what you aim to achieve.
  • If you've worked in a variety of roles: When your work history is all over the place, a resume objective statement can be a helpful tool to highlight your most relevant skills, experiences, and what you're looking for in your next role .

Resume objective vs. resume summary

A resume objective outlines your career goals and what you aim to achieve in a position, while a resume summary focuses on skills, accomplishments, education, and relevant experiences for the role.

“Think of the resume objective as your career aspiration and the summary as your professional snapshot,” says Angela Tait, People Operations Specialist and Founder of Tait Consulting . “The objective sets your sights forward, while the summary looks at your past and present achievements.”

How to write a resume objective

If you decide to write a resume objective, it'll be the first thing recruiters see on your resume, right after your name and contact information. This means their first impression will be based on how well-written your objective statement is. Here are key tips to do it right:

1. Mention your area of expertise

“Start by mentioning your area of expertise and the role you are applying for,” Tait says. This way, you let the employer know right away about your background and what you want to achieve professionally.

2. Show how you can add value to the company

Your objective statement—and your whole resume, actually—should be tailored to each job opening. “Personalize your resume objective by stating how you can add value to the company you're applying to,” Tait says. “For instance, ‘ Seeking to leverage my expertise in digital marketing to drive brand growth and engagement at XYZ Corp.’”

3. Highlight skills relevant to the role

Once again, to write an effective resume objective, keep in mind the role you're going for. “Focus on how your skills and interests align with that specific job opportunity,” says Conor Hughes, certified in Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) and HR Consultant at SMB Guide .

For example, for a software developer, skills in programming with languages like Java, C++, and Python are pretty important. Meanwhile, a graphic designer should highlight technical skills in creating and editing visual projects using tools like Photoshop, Illustrator, and Figma.

4. Optimize your statement for ATS machines

These days, most resumes get scanned by an ATS robot before reaching human recruiters. So, it's crucial to optimize your objective statement for these ATS machines. How? “Use keywords from the job description to show you have the relevant abilities they're looking for,” Hughes says.

If a job posting specifies “experience in copywriting” and “SEO optimization” as requirements, you should incorporate these exact keywords in your objective statement—and wherever else they fit on your resume. Using just “SEO” or only “copywriting” might not be enough; precision is key.

Need some help? Here's how to read the job description the right way —so you can stop sending resumes into the void.

5. Make it as concise as possible

Recruiters go through resumes really fast—that's one of the reasons two-page resumes aren't usually recommended. When writing your resume objective, keep it concise. “To one or two sentences max,” Hughes says. Remember, the goal is to give enough information about why you're applying for that role, not to share your whole life history.

Key takeaways

Resume objectives aren't the favorite of most recruiters, but they still serve a purpose. If you're career pivoting, relocating, applying for your first job, or have a diverse professional background, an objective statement can help the hiring manager understand your career goals and how they align with the job opportunity.

However, in other circumstances, using a resume summary might be more appropriate. (Here are 20 resume summary examples to make writing your own easier .)

Why this resume works

  • The best way to do this is by utilizing bullet points in your skills and work experience sections.
  • The details of how you exactly directed the launch of a new campaign may not fit in your resume, but they’ll be a perfect addition when you create a cover letter .
  • The best way to do this is by using the  reverse-chronological resume format  to demonstrate your most recent positions and how you’ve grown from role to role.

Marketing Student Resume

  • Did you harness tools like Zoom for diversity sessions or engage in panel discussions during a workshop? Or maybe during a community volunteering stint, you rallied local residents, demonstrating remarkable people skills handy in the marketing department. Such is the cocktail of experiences that tantalize potential employers to pick an entry-level candidate for their team.

Marketing Intern Resume

  • Integrate examples of how you’ve used marketing tools like Sprout Social or SEMrush to drive brand awareness. It’ll legitimize your personal experience and strengthen your candidate profile.

Entry-Level Marketing Resume

  • For example, consider including relevant courses from college in a separate section.
  • You can also add a  resume objective  to exhibit your skills, years of experience, and qualifications.
  • Use metrics to demonstrate how you’ve increased website traffic, saved reporting hours, reduced costs per lead, or improved conversion rates.

Marketing Assistant Resume

  • You can still make your marketing assistant resume look desirable by including internships and relevant college courses.
  • If you don’t have relevant experience, you can still highlight transferable skills from other jobs.
  • For example, if you worked as a server, you can highlight essential marketing assistant skills like time management, organization, collaboration, sales principles, and consumer behavior.
  • An objective lets employers know what skills and qualities make you right for the job (in less than four sentences, no less!). Don’t hesitate to mention what you hope to bring to the table at your future place of employment!

Senior Marketing Resume

  • Pick three of your most recent and relevant positions with four bullet points each.
  • List six to 10 skills in your skills section, with a mix of hard and soft skills.
  • If you’re feeling stuck about what to include, look up  resume examples  to get inspiration and help you format your content. You can also use a  resume builder  to make adding metrics, action verbs, and optional sections easier.

VP Marketing Resume

  • Divide your VP marketing resume’s work history into three distinct sections, each dedicated to role you held in a particular company. Then, highlight your duties and quantified achievements for each position in, say 4 bullet points, and complement it with a section detailing the company name, location, and term of office. See that? It’s a piece of cake!

Chief Marketing Officer Resume

  • Kick off by spicing up your chief marketing officer resume’s header with a vibrant color (a bright shade like orange could do). Then, lay your work experiences bare in snappy bullet points brimming with metrics and complemented by a larger font for the section subheadings. As for the side column, that’s prime real estate for your contact info, educational background, and a highlight of your skills, keeping it all within a single page.

Creative Marketing Resume

  • Before you send your resume, double-check that you’ve included your email address and a phone number that you actually answer (not the one that’s perpetually silent or sends callers to voicemail). And for the grand finale, pop in a hyperlink to your LinkedIn profile to add another layer to your professional world.

Influencer Marketing Resume

  • Achievements such as – 44% increase in social media engagement, 7.8K increase in weekly referral traffic, 4% increase in ROI over a quarter, and more – are what potential employers will be excited to see in your influencer marketing resume.

Marketing Coordinator Resume

  • Good marketing skills include paid ads, Google Analytics, Salesforce, MS Suite, and organization.
  • Hiring managers use applicant tracking systems (ATS for short) to weed through potential employees. The ATS scans resumes for skills and keywords the employer has marked as important; you’re more likely to get an interview if you have those skills and keywords.
  • As a marketing coordinator, you can include quantifiers like company profit, ROI, team sizes, media campaign success, increases in website traffic, etc.

Marketing Associate Resume

  • Use a  resume checker  or spellcheck system to scan for typos, grammar errors, and punctuation mistakes so you can hand in your resume without worrying.
  • Ensure you make it through ATS by including specific marketing keywords, like “Salesforce,” “paid ads,” and “communication.” Always check your resume against the job description to ensure you’re hitting the mark.

Growth Marketing Manager Resume

  • There are many options to choose from, including business objectives like revenue, sales, and customer growth, or marketing-specific outcomes like retention, website traffic, social media, and digital marketing.
  • Using a  resume template  is a great way to structure and format your content, but if you’re strapped for time, you can use a  resume outline  and add your own stylistic elements as you see fit.

Content Marketing Specialist Resume

  • The best way to demonstrate your abilities is by giving hard numbers to quantify your content production. Good examples include:
  • How many posts or blogs you’ve written
  • How much your efforts improved conversion rates, engagement, or other social media KPIs
  • How many new customers your business gained through your efforts
  • Always use the job description to guide what you write; don’t copy the skills and requirements word for word, but do include what you feel is honest.

Communications & Marketing Specialist Resume

  • Luckily, there are a series of  resume tips and tricks  you can follow, starting with maximizing your contact header and skipping extraneous content (like a profile picture and extra pages).
  • Marketing campaigns, customer surveys, and targeted emails are all things that demonstrate your knowledge of marketing strategies.

Marketing Specialist Resume

  • Wharton is a top business school, and you’ll be more likely to secure an interview if recruiters see that you’ve learned from the best.

When it comes to writing your resume, remember your primary goal: getting an interview. We’ve written this guide to help you achieve that mission and eventually, get the job.

However, marketers have a wide range of skills and responsibilities, so it can be tough to figure out what to include and what to leave out.

To write a great resume, you need to ensure you’ve done these three things:

  • Formatted your resume properly
  • Included all the sections a hiring manager is looking for
  • Talked about your skills/experience in the right way

To achieve that end, we’ll go over the following information:

  • Marketing resume formatting tips
  • Quantifying the impact of your work experience
  • The skills to include in your “skills” section
  • Customizing your marketing resume for each role you apply to
  • The lowdown on your resume objective
  • Mentioning your education and certifications

How to format your marketing resume

When it comes to formatting your resume, there are a few rules you should follow:

  • Keep it to one page. Your resume should be your highlight reel, not an autobiography.
  • Opt for a simple format. This is not the place to use seven fonts and fifteen colors to highlight your creativity.
  • Don’t give the hiring manager a trivial reason to put you in the “no” pile.  Avoid any spelling or grammar errors at all costs!
  • Keep your work experience to short, self-contained bullet points. This makes your resume much more readable.
  • Only include a  resume objective  or  resume summary  if you can customize it for each role you apply to. Real estate is valuable on your resume, so don’t waste it.

Talking about your marketing work experience

This is going to be the single biggest factor when the hiring manager is deciding to give you an interview or not. Think of it as the entree at a several-course dinner; it should take up the most space on your resume.

Focus on the quantifiable, tangible impacts of the marketing projects you’ve worked on in the past.  Hiring managers want to be sure the candidates they interview will positively influence their business.

Think about it: would you keep running a paid ad if you had no idea whether it was working or not? Of course not!

Consider these two work experiences. They’re describing the same person in the same job, but one utilizes numbers to describe their impact, while the other doesn’t.

Which do you think is more convincing?

RIGHT – use numbers to describe your impact

Financial Services Company August 2016 – May 2018, New York NY Marketer

  • Developed a comprehensive paid acquisition strategy across Google, Facebook, and industry newsletters, resulting in new leads that generated  $11M  in 2017
  • Built a robust brand awareness campaign through conferences and speaking engagements, increasing inbound leads by  6 8%  per year
  • Led the implementation of real-time reporting on marketing expenditures to adjust bid strategy, improving ROI by  31%
  • Exceeded growth targets every quarter by  19%  on average

WRONG – avoid vague statements of impact

  • Developed a comprehensive paid acquisition strategy across Google, Facebook, and industry newsletters, resulting in new leads
  • Built a robust brand awareness campaign through conferences and speaking engagements, leading to an increase in inbound leads
  • Led the implementation of real-time reporting on marketing expenditures to adjust bid strategy, leading to ROI improvement
  • Exceeded growth targets every quarter

Which do you think performed better? The reality is, numbers speak louder than words. Numbers also help hiring managers read your resume faster, which is essential when you’re likely competing with 50+ other applicants.

You can quantify your marketing impact in a wide range of ways. Here are some examples for to help inspire you:

Ways to quantify your impact as a marketer

  • Example: Identified keyword opportunities and created content to generate 21,000 organic users and 432 new leads monthly
  • Example: Launched an email campaign to notify power users of under-utilized features, resulting in $411,000 in incremental revenue
  • Example: Built a culture of A/B testing to improve the lifetime conversion rate of a campaign by 78%
  • Example: Identified poorly performing external vendors and reduced costs by $110,000 annually while exceeding revenue targets
  • Example: Created ads for each customer segment, resulting in an ROI improvement of 19% relative to generalized ad campaigns
  • Example: Beat quarterly revenue targets by an average of 6% each quarter for the last year and a half

There’s no better way to convince a hiring manager that you deserve an interview than by demonstrating you’ve had a significant, measurable impact in your past marketing roles.

Showcase your marketing skills

The hiring process is a mystery, but it doesn’t have to be! Here’s what you need to know about the hiring process after you’ve submitted your resume:

  • Companies use an Automated Tracking System (ATS) to filter out resumes based on certain keywords.
  • The hiring manager or HR manager reviews your resume and determines whether you get an initial interview or not.

But how can you be sure you’ll get past this filter? Simple: include the relevant skills that are mentioned in the  marketing job description , of course!

In your  resume’s skills section , try to include  at least 90 percent technical skills  if you can. ATS filters don’t screen for soft skills like “communication” or “leadership.” Hiring managers like to see soft skills, but to pass the ATS, you will need primarily hard skills.

So what skills should you include? We’ve compiled a list of useful marketing skills that you can include on your resume. Remember,  only include skills you’d be comfortable explaining in an interview .

Skills to include on your marketing resume

  • CRM: Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics, Pipedrive, HubSpot
  • Web Analytics: Adobe Analytics, Mixpanel, Heap, Google Analytics
  • General Office Administration Tools: Google Sheets/Docs/Slides, Microsoft Excel/Word/PowerPoint
  • Optimization: customer segmentation, attribution modeling, A/B testing
  • Paid Ads: AdWords, LinkedIn, Google Display Network, Facebook
  • Social Media: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter
  • Email Marketing: ConvertKit, Drip, Mailchimp
  • SEO: keyword research, backlink building, content creation
  • Direct Mail

The skills you include on your resume should vary based on the kind of job you’re seeking. For example, if you’re applying for an organic marketing role, then you’ll expand on your SEO skillset instead of your social media skillset.

For marketers, it’s much more important to be an expert in a few skills than have knowledge of a lot of skills.

A hiring manager would be skeptical of a digital marketer who claims to be an expert in paid ads, social media, SEO, and email marketing. Rather, it’s better to position yourself as an expert in one or two of those areas.

Tailoring your resume for each marketing role

Because “marketing” is such a broad term, you’re much more likely to get an interview if you tailor your resume for each job to which you apply.

Tailoring your resume tells hiring managers that you’re detail-oriented and committed to the company. Remember, you’ll be competing with many other marketers for the role, so take advantage of any opportunity you can to impress the hiring manager.

Start customizing your marketing resume by following these steps:

  • Read the job description thoroughly. As you read it, think of any past experience you’ve held that matches what you’re reading.
  • On the first draft of your resume, list any work experience you have that is related to the role. Include the skills they’re looking for and specific responsibilities.

Let’s walk through a concrete example.

Let’s say the company Qapital is hiring a senior performance marketer. Here are the job responsibilities:

Example marketing job responsibilities

About the Role

As a Senior Performance Marketer, you will help to ensure that our investments in marketing pay off in the form of user and revenue growth. Reporting directly to the Chief Marketing Officer, you will:

  • Own all paid performance marketing channels and serve as a day-to-day steward of the budget.
  • Manage acquisition strategy and execution for paid media across channels.  Continuously improve performance through detailed optimization to meet aggressive campaign goals and objectives.
  • Build and maintain a test-and-learn culture to determine the most effective channels.
  • Source and manage media agencies, performance marketing agencies, and other external performance marketing partners.
  • Work collaboratively to create and test messaging and creatives for multiple audiences and engagements/channels.
  • Partner closely with media agencies to align on goals, and drive the strategy to get there.
  • Devise innovative ways to drive subscriptions and KPIs. Create a testing agenda for new digital platforms and creatives.
  • Partner with Analytics, Design, and agencies to track and report acquisition performance.
  • Own budget tracking and forecasting across channels.

Essentially, they’re looking for someone to take ownership of overpaid media and all the responsibilities that come with it, from budgeting to measuring performance. The highlighted keywords and concepts are those you might be able to incorporate into your resume.

Here’s what your resume might look like if you were applying for this particular role:

  • Onboarded and monitored media agency partners, saving $250,000 by ending contracts with the least-performing partners while hitting revenue targets
  • Led forecasting, budgeting, tracking, and reporting for all paid acquisitions, resulting in new leads that generated $17M in 2017
  • Fostered a culture of testing and learning by encouraging constant optimization of ad strategy, increasing conversation rates by 87%
  • Exceeded growth targets every quarter by 24% on average

As you can see, the work experience has been adjusted to closely match what Qapital wants from their new hire. Doing this will ensure you get past both the initial ATS scan and the hiring manager’s inspection.

Your marketing resume objective

Most of the time, you won’t need an objective, but it can be a useful tool for an entry-level candidate. (If you’re a senior-level candidate with at least 10 years of experience, use a  resume summary  instead.) But what exactly  is  an objective?

A  resume objective  expresses your specific interest in the marketing role you’re applying to while highlighting your skills and goals for your future job.

Since your resume is limited on space, you need to should scrutinize everything you include. Our rule of thumb: unless you’re going to customize your resume objective for each role you apply to, leave it out entirely. You want the first thing hiring managers read to be something that significantly improves your chances of getting an interview.

Which of these resume objectives would you prefer as a hiring manager?

WRONG – uninformative resume objective

“Looking to leverage my experience with social media marketing to help grow a customer-centric technology product”

This candidate didn’t bother to customize the resume objective for the specific role. Compare that to this   resume objective:

RIGHT – tailored resume objective

“Looking to leverage my experience with paid customer acquisition in new markets to further Stripe’s mission of making payments accessible to businesses of all sizes as they expand into South America.”

This resume objective clearly demonstrates how the candidate has researched both the role and the company. More than that, they succinctly stated why they’re a great fit for the role. This is the kind of resume objective that’s worth including!

Education and certifications

While your education section doesn’t need to be huge, you still need to include it. List the school you went to and the degree(s) you obtained while there.

If you’re an entry-level candidate or have only a few years of experience, you can include relevant courses and your GPA (if it’s higher than 3.2). However, for more senior-level marketers, your education section should only have the school you went to (and where it was located), the years you were there, and the degree you earned.

Get ahead of other job applicants by quantifying your marketing impact on your resume. Can you quantify generated leads in a month, revenue gained from a social media campaign, improved performance from A/B testing, etc.? It’s okay if you can only give an estimate, but seeing numbers on the page not only helps solidify your impact, but they also disrupt the flow of text—meaning the hiring manager reviewing your resume is forced to slow down and look a little closer!

There are so many marketing positions out there, so it’s important to only include skills that are relevant to the job you’re applying for (and, of course, relevant to the skills you honestly have). As a marketing analyst, skills that could make sense for your resume include CRM, A/B testing, social media ads, and SEO strategies. On the other hand, skills for a marketing specialist might be branding, digital and print copywriting, email marketing, and Microsoft and Google Suite.

If you decide to include an objective (you probably don’t need it!), the secret sauce in writing a good one is tailoring it to the company and making it clear why you’re the right fit to meet that company’s challenges or needs addressed in its job description. Here’s an example that hits the mark: Adept and high-speed thinker with 2 years of marketing internship experience and 3 years in office operations. Eager to demonstrate skills in crafting paid advertisements and executing tools, such as Salesforce, MS Suite, and Google Analytics as a marketing assistant at MIXD.

Resume objective examples by industry

The resume objective is at the top of your resume and summarizes your career history and goals. It should highlight your experience and catch the hiring manager’s attention. When it comes to length, it can be anywhere from two to six sentences long. But remember, you should only include the most relevant information here. Resume objectives can also be helpful if you are changing careers or have little experience. They can show that you are ambitious and know what you want, which most employers value.

Resume Objective Structure

A resume objective and a resume summary are both introductory statements that can be included at the top of a resume. While they serve a similar purpose of providing a brief overview of the candidate’s qualifications and career goals, there are some differences between the two.

Resume Objective

A resume objective is a concise statement that focuses on the candidate’s career goals and the type of employment they are seeking. It typically consists of two to three sentences and is tailored to reflect the candidate’s relevant skills and the value they can bring to the position they’re applying for.

Resume Summary

A resume summary, is a brief paragraph that provides an overview of the candidate’s qualifications, skills , and experiences. It is typically longer than a resume objective and provides a more comprehensive snapshot of the candidate’s background and achievements .

How to write a resume objective summary statement

A resume objective statement is a concise summary of your career goals and the value you can bring to a specific job. It should be tailored to the job you are applying for and help you stand out from other applicants.

1. Customize for each job

Create a unique objective statement for every job application. Avoid using a generic objective that suits any job in your industry. Instead, be specific about the role you are applying for and the company you are interested in. This shows your specificity and drive, which is more likely to catch a recruiter’s eye.

2. Follow a simple formula

Structure your resume objective statement using the following formula: Who you are + What you want + What you bring to the table. For example:

  • Who you are : Mention your current position, years of experience, degree or level of education, and relevant training or certification.
  • What you want : State the role you are applying for, the name of the company, what you want to accomplish, or any transition you want to make.
  • What you bring to the table : Highlight your key hard skills , key soft skills , and how you can help the company meet its goals.

3. Include relevant keywords

Incorporate job-specific keywords in your resume objective statement. This can help your resume get noticed by applicant tracking systems (ATS) and increase your chances of being selected for an interview.

4. Write in the third person

Use the third-person perspective when writing your resume objective statement. Avoid using first-person pronouns like “I,” “me,” and “my” as they come across as personal and informal. Your resume should maintain a professional tone.

Resume objective examples based on career stage

When writing a resume objective, it’s important to tailor it to your specific career stage. Here are some examples of resume objectives based on different career stages:

Example #1: Entry-level resume objective

For individuals who are just starting their careers and have little to no professional experience, an entry-level resume objective can help highlight their skills and enthusiasm.

Example #2:  Changing careers resume objective

If you’re transitioning to a new career, a resume objective can help explain your motivations and transferable skills.

Example #3:  Internship resume objective

A resume objective for an internship is different from a traditional one in that it focuses more on your academic achievements. You can include your academic performance, projects, and skills you gained throughout your studies.

Example #4:  Student resume objective

For students who are still in school, a resume objective can highlight their academic achievements and future goals.

Resume Objective Examples: A Career Objective Guide

The formula and some good examples for creating a resume objective to get you noticed

You're searching for a new (or perhaps your first) job, and you know your objective. However, do you know how to communicate it effectively on your resume? A resume objective is a great way to let employers see a snapshot of your skills and experiences and ensure that you stand out from other candidates. However, as our great resume objective examples will demonstrate, your objective matters less than the employer's needs.

In this post, we'll explain the resume objective and how it has evolved. We'll also offer insight into the differences between an objective statement and a summary statement - and how to know which one to use. Then we'll offer some tips to help you craft an objective for your resume and look at 27 great resume objective statement examples that you can customize for your own resume.

What is a resume objective?

The resume objective used to be the gold standard of resume introductions. This brief, three or four-sentence paragraph had long been used to capture employers' attention by focusing on a job seeker's skills, experiences, and achievements while also highlighting the candidate's career goals. These days, it's less common to find professional resume objective examples since most job seekers rely on a resume summary instead.

The basic components of a good resume objective statement

A good resume objective provides three kinds of information to employers:

Who you are, which is generally a statement of your current job title as well as any skills, education , or certifications relevant to the job you're after

What you will bring that's of value to that company, such as your years of experience or specific training

How you will use your talents to help the company reach its goals

Resume objective vs summary statement

It's important to understand how these two career statements differ from one another. On the surface, they would seem to have much in common. After all, they're both designed to serve as introductions that summarize your main qualifications for the job. Moreover, each is intended to capture the reader's attention and inspire them to continue reading the resume .

The differences, however, can be stark. For example:

Resume summaries focus primarily on the candidate's past record of achievements; objective statements emphasize future goals

Resume summaries provide quantifiable results, using real numbers to demonstrate value; objective statements rarely do that since it is difficult to quantify goals

Resume summaries are designed to align achievements with the company's needs; objective statements have traditionally focused more on the candidate's priorities and needs

Resume summaries are great for people who have experience and achievements; objective statements can be useful for those who lack that experience

Which one should you use?

If you've been following our resume guidance in recent years, you're probably aware of the fact that we recommend the resume summary for most job seekers. And make no mistake: if you're an experienced professional who is still moving ahead in the same field and industry, the resume summary is almost certainly your best option. However, there are two situations in which you might find that a resume objective statement will serve your interests better.

If you're new to the workforce. Recent graduates will rarely have the type of real-world experience needed for an effective summary statement. In most instances, a newcomer to the working world will likely need to rely on a resume objective to highlight skills and demonstrate how their goals align with the company's vision.

When you're interested in switching careers . In most cases, you'll have the transferable skills needed to do the job, but may struggle to align your quantifiable achievements with the company's needs. If that's the case, a resume objective can help you to showcase your skills in a way that demonstrates how they can positively benefit the company.

Tips for writing your own resume objective

Because resume objectives have lost some of their luster in recent years, many job seekers may not be familiar with the best way to craft them. To assist you in that process, we've compiled some simple tips you can use to make sure that your objective statement achieves your goals.

State how you'll help the company, not just how qualified you are. While you may not have the experiences or achievements needed to directly convey that value, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't still focus on what the company needs rather than your own desires and goals.

Use specific facts, numbers, and details whenever possible, without bragging or generalizing.

Keep it simple. Don't use flowery or expansive words, as they can sometimes make you appear arrogant. Make it as easy as possible for a recruiter to quickly see you as a qualified candidate.

Review the job posting to ensure that you have the information you need to make your resume objective specific to the job and company.

Tailor your objective to the specific job, career, and industry you're applying for. This means that you should create a separate, customized resume for each application.

Expert tip: Don't make the mistake of creating an outdated resume objective centered on your own goals. Instead, incorporate the best elements of a resume summary into your objective statement by taking the time to tie your goals to the company's needs.

Key things to remember

As you can see from the resume objective examples that we've included throughout this post, there's a right way to create this type of professional summary. As you craft your own objective, keep these keen insights in mind:

Try to include some measurable achievements in your statement, to show how you can add value to the employer's bottom line. If you're new to the workplace, however, focus instead on highlighting the benefits that your skills can provide to that employer.

Keep it short, focused on relevant details, and packed with keywords from the job description.

Make sure that everything you write in your objective statement is supported by the information included in your skills and work experience sections .

Always put yourself in the employer's shoes and try to imagine what kind of information they might be looking for as they review your resume.

Try to only rely on an objective statement if you have little or no real-world experience in the industry you're trying to join. If you do have experience, you'll probably be better served by a summary statement.

Wrapping it up

Once again, this is by no means a complete list of resume objective examples, but it should help you to understand the formula for creating a specific resume objective for whatever job you're after.

Take the time to do this right. Create a tailored objective for each position you want and you'll be easily found by both recruiters and applicant tracking systems searching for the keywords that are right there at the top of your resume.

The result? You'll be starting your new job well ahead of the crowd!

Still not sure about your resume objective or other aspects of your resume? Make sure that it's submission-ready with a free resume review or professional rewrite .

The emergence of nano-influencers has sparked significant interest among brands seeking genuine connections with their target audience.

Hence in this article, I want to address the four primary questions marketers have about nano-influencers, from who they are and what benefits they bring to the table, to marketing objectives they can support and how to activate them for your brand.

Who Are Nano-Influencers?

Nano-influencers are, first of all, engaged consumers who thrive on sharing personal experiences within their social circles through both offline conversations and online posts. At Territory Influence, we consider nano-influencers as a distinct segment within the influencer tier pyramid, characterized by their modest yet highly engaged following of up to 1,000 individuals.

What sets them apart is their unparalleled ability to foster genuine connections with their audience through personal stories and authentic dialogue. Unlike larger-scale influencers, nano-influencers prioritize quality engagement over sheer follower count, leveraging their relatable persona to drive online and offline interactions. Years ago, marketers might have called these consumers brand advocates, brand ambassadors or seeders, valuing them mostly for their potent word-of-mouth recommendations.

‘house of the dragon’ season 2, episode 8 review: a hugely underwhelming season finale, today’s nyt mini crossword clues and answers for monday, august 5th.

Benefits Of Nano-Influencers• Exceptional engagement: Nano-influencers excel in cultivating meaningful interactions with their audience, fostering vibrant communities around their content. As a result, their content generates twice as many interactions compared to macro-influencers.

• Authenticity: Amid a saturated digital landscape, nano-influencers stand out for their unfiltered, down-to-earth approach, resonating deeply with audiences seeking genuine connections.

• Cost-effectiveness: Nano-influencers typically do not charge brands for their collaboration, being rather motivated by their love for the brand or by improving their social status with their peers. Interviewing 359 marketers, agencies and consultants, Influencer Intelligence found that nearly 50% of respondents saw nano-influencers as more cost-effective.

• Impact: Built on authenticity and transparency, nano-influencers forge genuine connections based on mutual respect, earning trust that translates into influential recommendations that really impact their connections. Analyzing more than 30 nano-influencer campaigns across categories and countries, research experts from Circana (formerly known as IRi) have measured an average sales uplift of 11.4%

What Objectives Can Nano-Influencer Programs Deliver?

Activating nano-influencers at scale can effectively support brands along the entire marketing funnel :

• Expanding brand awareness: By publishing thousands of user-generated-content pieces, nano-influencers play a pivotal role in amplifying online brand visibility and expanding brand awareness.

• Enhancing brand consideration: Through credible online reviews, UGC and offline recommendations, nano-influencers contribute to bolstering brand consideration by creating a FOMO effect with other consumers.

• Boosting brand engagement: By fostering community engagement and interactions, nano-influencers can improve engagement rates for social media campaigns.

• Increase trial and conversion: Leveraging product trials and authentic recommendations, nano-influencers play a pivotal role in generating online and offline sales.

• Enhance retention and advocacy: Nano-influencers could form the foundation of your CRM strategy, building a community of brand lovers and loyal users. Building a community of brand lovers can unlock sustainable growth and countless benefits for companies and marketing teams, as I explain in detail in a previous Forbes article.

Main Steps For A Successful Nano-Influencer Campaign

• Identify suitable influencers to impact your target audience: Conduct thorough research to identify nano-influencers aligned with the brand's values, target audience and marketing objectives. This may involve leveraging the brand's community on social media or partnering with specialist agencies with access to large-scale consumer panels, rich data and insights.

• Educate and equip influencers: Ensure nano-influencers understand the brand, product, and campaign objectives and equip them with products to try and assets to share. Provide them with a detailed campaign briefing with clear do's/dont's and background insights that will make them appear knowledgeable and let them shine with their peers.

• Kick-start the creative dynamic: Develop an engaging creative concept beyond the mere product promotion to help nano-influencers with their storytelling. This entails collaborating closely with a creative team to ensure the campaign offers an immersive experience, rich storytelling and compelling content.

• Gather consumer insights and data: Continuously monitor campaign performance, measuring key indicators and analyzing data for insights. Make sure you gather learnings over time in a consistent manner to improve campaign setup and outcome.

• Leverage content and claims: Identify the best-performing content in your campaign to amplify with paid media. Plan up front how to utilize content, quotes or testimonials from your influencers across your owned channels, in-store, on e-commerce or even on-pack.

At Territory Influence, we use an even more elaborate seven-step process to ensure each one of our nano-influencer campaigns delivers the best results for our clients.

Nano-influencers offer a unique opportunity for brands to forge authentic connections and drive effective marketing campaigns. With the right influencer selection, effective communication, creative concepts and detailed measurement, brands can harness the power of nano-influencers to achieve tangible results and navigate the dynamic landscape of modern influencer marketing successfully.

When writing a resume objective for a sales position, it is important to clearly articulate your professional goals and objectives. A resume objective is a brief statement that outlines your desired job title, skills, and experience that you can bring to the position. It should be tailored to the specific sales role you are applying for and should demonstrate how you can contribute to the company’s success. When crafting your resume objective, focus on key words such as “driven”, “motivated”, “results-orientated” and “experienced” that will help shape your message and make it stand out from other applicants. For example, an effective resume objective for a sales position could read: “A motivated and organized professional with 5+ years of experience in customer service and sales seeking a challenging role as a Sales Representative at ABC Company where I can use my interpersonal skills to drive customer satisfaction and achieve targets.” By using concrete examples like this one, you will be able to create an effective resume objective for any sales role that accurately reflects your qualifications and experience.

How to Write a Sales Resume Objective

A sales resume objective is an important part of any job application, as it gives employers a quick overview of your skills and abilities. It should be concise, yet powerful enough to grab the employer’s attention. Here are some tips for crafting the perfect sales resume objective.

First, you should know what employers are looking for in a sales resume objective. Generally speaking, they want to know what sets you apart from other candidates and how you can help the company achieve its goals. To make this easier, think about the specific skills and experiences that make you uniquely qualified for the position. Be sure to include relevant keywords throughout your objective statement to demonstrate that you understand the requirements of the job.

Next, focus on describing your accomplishments rather than simply listing your qualifications. Employers want to see how you have used your skills and experience in a professional setting to make a difference in previous roles. Showcase your successes by providing concrete examples when possible; this will give them an understanding of how you could contribute to their team if hired.

Finally, keep it short and sweet; no one wants to read through long-winded statements! Aim for around three sentences that provide a clear picture of who you are and what makes you stand out from other applicants. Avoid using overly technical terms or jargon; instead, focus on using language that is easy to understand but still packs a punch.

By following these simple tips, you can create an effective sales resume objective that will help get your foot in the door!

This skill could be crucial in achieving sales targets and maintaining strong customer relationships.

Common Mistakes When Writing a Sales Resume Objective

When it comes to writing a sales resume objective, there are some common mistakes that can be easily avoided. A well-crafted resume objective can help set you apart from other applicants and make your resume stand out from the competition. Here are some of the most common mistakes to avoid when crafting your sales resume objective:

1. Not Tailoring Your Objective to the Specific Job: It is important to craft an objective that is specific to the job you are applying for. Generic objectives, such as “seeking a challenging position in sales” will not give the hiring manager any insight into why you are qualified for the job or what sets you apart from other candidates. Instead, focus on how your skills, experience and qualifications make you uniquely suited for the role you are applying for.

2. Focusing Too Much on What You Want From The Job: Your resume objective should also not be focused solely on what you want from the job, such as increased pay or more responsibility. Rather, emphasize how you will use your skills and experience to benefit the company and contribute to its success.

3. Not Showcasing Soft Skills: While it is important to highlight relevant hard skills in your objective, it is also important to showcase soft skills such as customer service and communication skills which are essential in a successful salesperson. Make sure that these skills are emphasized in your objective so that potential employers can see that you have them.

4. Writing Too Much or Too Little: When crafting an effective resume objective, it is important to find a balance between too much information and too little information. Make sure that your objective is concise yet detailed enough so that potential employers can get an accurate understanding of who you are and why they should hire you for the role.

By avoiding these common mistakes when writing a sales resume objective, you can ensure that your application stands out amongst others and gives potential employers an accurate understanding of who you are and why they should hire you for their open position.
