Confused about the differences between studying in the UK and India? From cost to grading and life experience, there are many things to consider when deciding where to study.

For context, here is a brief comparison of schooling ages in India and in the UK.

Education in India

The Secondary School Certificate is a public examination taken by students after completing at least ten years of schooling in the following subjects: languages (English & 1 Regional Language), Social Studies (SST), Mathematics, and Science (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology).

A new 9-point grading system has been introduced for this level: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, D, E1, E2.

The Higher Secondary Certificate is a two-year study in science, commerce, and arts at a school. Results are awarded in percentages as below:

  • Distinction – 75%+ 
  • First Class – 60% 
  • Second Class – 50% 
  • Pass – 33%

Bachelor’s Degree in India: This involves 3/4 years of study in a university with specialisation in an area like Commerce and Economics, Management, Computing, Arts, Engineering, or Science.

Degrees are awarded as follows:

  • Distinction 
  • First Class 
  • Second Class 

Education in the UK

General Certificate of Secondary Education: Level 2 of the NQF Framework for GCSEs grades A* - C. Students can take up to 9-12 GCSEs, including English and Maths, at A*- C.

GCSEs are available in over 40 academic and nine 'applied' subjects. The applied subjects are focused on wider work areas, such as engineering. When you take GCSEs, you can achieve pass grades from A* to G. If you don't achieve the minimum pass mark to get a grade G, then a U grade is awarded, which means 'unclassified’.

  • Higher tier (difficult level) exams lead to grades A* - D
  • Foundation tier exams lead to grades C – G

A-levels comprise the AS (advanced subsidiary) level and the A2. Each year's grade makes up 50 percent of the overall A-level grade. This forms level 3 of the NQF qualifications framework.

  • Year 1: AS-Level—Students can study the AS-Level as either a free-standing qualification or the first half of the full A-level.
  • Year 2: In year two of study, you take the A2 - this is not a separate qualification, but the second half of the A-Level. The A2 is designed to deepen the knowledge you gained during the AS Level.

Colleges of further education and sixth-form colleges also offer academic, technical and vocational courses for people over 16.

Students can also choose to take the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. This programme is an internationally recognised qualification for students aged 16 to 19. It is level 3 of the NQF qualifications framework and is focused on studying various subjects, including languages, science, maths, history, arts and geography.

Undergraduate Study in the UK

UCAS manages applications to higher education courses in the UK and processes more than two million applications for full-time undergraduate courses yearly. SI-UK uses UCAS for undergraduate applications on behalf of Indian students.

- Foundation Study in the UK

Students can opt to study a Foundation Degree (Level 5 of FHEQ / NQF qualifications framework), a university-level qualification involving the first two years of an honours degree. Upon obtaining a Foundation Degree, students may ‘top-up’ their qualification to an honours degree.

Undergraduate studies in the UK take three years to complete in most cases, leading to a qualification such as a bachelor of arts (BA), or a bachelor of science (BSc) - level 6 of NQF/ FHEQ. You will need at least four years of study if you choose a sandwich programme involving practical work accompanied by coursework.

A third or above means you receive a bachelor's degree with honours.

Undergraduate Study in India

After completing 12 years of education, students can apply for undergraduate degrees at universities or colleges. Undergraduate study in India typically consists of a 3-year Bachelor's degree and a 4-year programme for a professional degree, such as a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E) or a Bachelor of Medicine or a Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS).

Admission is based on the student's performance in their final secondary school examinations, such as the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) or the Indian School Certificate (ISC). Some courses may have additional entrance exams or require minimum grades in specific subjects.

Postgraduate Study in the UK

After completing an undergraduate degree, students can study for a postgraduate diploma, postgraduate certificate or the more traditional Master's degree . Different types of postgraduate degrees include:

  • MA: Master of Arts 
  • MSc: Master of Science 
  • MBA: Master of Business Administration  
  • LLM: Master of Law  
  • MEd: Master of Education 
  • MPhil: Master of Philosophy 
  • MRes: Master of Research

Grades are normally awarded as follows:

A doctorate qualification or Research degree (Level 8 of the NQF/ FHEQ qualifications framework) allows you to undertake an original piece of research. Completing a PhD usually takes at least three years of full-time study. Doctorates are normally awarded as either a pass or fail, sometimes with distinction.

Postgraduate Study in India

Postgraduate study in India typically consists of a two-year Master's degree and a three-year professional degree, such as a Master of Business Administration (MBA) or a Master of Technology (M.Tech).

To be eligible for postgraduate study, students must have completed an undergraduate degree from a recognised university or college in India. Admissions to postgraduate courses is based on the student's performance in their undergraduate degree and their scores on entrance exams like the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) for technical courses or the Common Admission Test (CAT) for management programmes.

A PhD in India typically takes 3-5 years to complete, depending on the field of study and the candidate's research progress. To be eligible for a PhD in India, a student must have completed a Master's degree from a recognised university or college. PhD students are typically required to submit a thesis or dissertation representing their original research and making a significant contribution to their field of study.

Education in Scotland

The Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) provides syllabuses for years S3-S6 in secondary school. “Standard Grade” courses are taken by students, including studying years S3-S4. These are equivalent to the Indian SSC – 10th STD and UK’s GCSE levels.

  • Grades range from 1 (highest) to 7 (lowest). Grade 3 and above is considered a pass.

Years S5 and S6 are 1-year courses, harder than GCSEs but easier than A-Level. Therefore, some feel these courses are insufficient training for university, so Scottish university degrees generally last for one more year than English universities.

  • Grades range from A (highest) to C, which is passes and D, which is a near pass.

The Advanced Higher is taken by the ablest S6 students, where students focus on one or two subjects. These papers are graded A-E with credit values similar to A-Level in the UK.

How to Convert Grades from India: A Brief Overview

Every year, higher education institutions in the United States receive a large number of applications from international students from India. In 2019, the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in India reported that the number of Indian students studying at higher education institutions in the United States had topped over 200,000 —a new record. According to the Open Doors Report on International Education Exchange, cited by the U.S. Embassy, this large total of students accounts for roughly 18 percent of all the international students combined in the United States. It seems very likely that this trend will continue to rise every year.

With so many international students coming from India, it is necessary for international educators to become informed about India’s education system. Above all, it is very important to understand the nuances and methodologies of grade transcripts (sometimes called marks sheets) issued by institutions in India. Here, we will explore how to approach grading at both the secondary and postsecondary levels.

Primary and secondary education in India is compulsory and lasts for 10 years. Upon completion of the secondary school examinations (Standard X/Class 10), students can enroll in higher secondary education. Completion of the higher secondary examinations (Standard XII/Class 12) will enable a student to then enroll at higher education institutions in India.

Grading for secondary and higher secondary examinations will often follow one of a variety of different grading systems.

Traditional Marks System:

Many older, and some newer, examinations might be graded using the traditional marks-based system. This grading system has been used by various institutions for decades. It is graded based on the percentage of marks obtained/earned out of the total marks possible for a given examination subject. The percentage of marks earned will often be complimented with a classification/award. For example, if a student earns 60 out of 100 total marks, then they would have a grade of 60%, which is considered First Class/Division. The Traditional Marks system is outlined in Figure 1.

A unique feature of the Traditional Marks system includes the varied minimum passing marks, which tend to be anywhere from 30 to 40. Very rarely, there can be some programs graded with a minimum passing percentage below 30 or over 40. It is recommended to check the marks sheet/transcript to understand the minimum for passing.

In addition, there is also the potential for Grace Marks, or Conceded Pass grades. These grades are awarded for subjects with a total that is below the minimum for passing, but since the average for the year (or overall program) is above passing, the individual failing grade can instead be counted as a passing grade.

Central Board of Secondary Education Grading System:

Standard X and XII examinations administered by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) might be graded with either the older or newer version of their standard grading scale.

There are other examinations offered by state-level examination boards and other central institutions such as the National Institute for Open School (NIOS). For these grading systems, the documents should provide the system used; otherwise, it is recommended to check an awarding institution’s website for standard grading information.

Postsecondary:

Higher education in India is very diverse and involves a variety of different paths. Bachelor’s degrees tend to be three of four years, although there are longer programs in professional fields. There are also “post-bachelor’s degrees” that are earned after completing a three-year bachelor’s degree. Master’s degrees require the minimum of a three-year bachelor’s degree for admission and typically last two years, followed by doctoral degrees. There are also credentials in certain fields, such as accounting and nursing, that are offered by government-backed higher education institutions.

Grading for postsecondary programs is more institution-specific than secondary and higher secondary. There is the traditional marks system, as was discussed earlier and shown in Figure 1. Institutions will have their own determined minimum passing marks provided in a degree program’s marks sheet(s). Some institutions, such as Jawaharlal Nehru Technological Universities, award First Class/Division with Distinction as a higher grade than First Class/Division. Institutions also determine if they will award grace marks/conceded pass grades for failed exams.

Postsecondary grading could also follow the newer Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS) . The CBCS scale was proposed by the University Grants Commission of India (UGC) in 2014/2015 as a new grading system that could be customized by any accredited institution. This grading system is out of 10 grade points, and each grade point has a letter grade that is subject to change depending on the institution. The main converting factor is the grade point value, so it is always important to have the exact grading information to properly convert CBCS grades. This grading system is shown below in Figure 3.

Institutions can choose how they adapt and change their CBCS grading. Interestingly, letter grades, and sometimes percentage scales, are usually the only part that changes from one institution to another. Schools will develop letter grade systems that deviate from the standard CBCS, yet they will often keep the same 10-point scale except where the minimum for passing is five or four.

The University Grants Commission explains that the CBCS follows standardized letter grades and grade points , but they do not explain why letter grades change and not the grade points. Upon review of the UGC’s CBCS regulations beginning in 2014, it would appear that there are no rules listed that specifically enforce consistency in the grading system. There are also no rules stating that institutions cannot change the grading system from the UGC outline. A lot of the emphasis for measuring student academic performance appears to be on the Semester/Cumulative Grade Point Average (SGPA/CGPA). SGPA/CGPA is calculated based on the grade point values and credits for each exam subject in each semester completed. Since the SGPA/CGPA system is relatively uniform under the CBCS, it can be inferred that grade points remain the same to maintain “seamless mobility of students” between institutions, as the UGC illustrates.

Although many colleges and universities will use the 10-point scale, some may still provide a grading scale that is not standard. A less common CBCS scale is the seven-point scale. The University of Mumbai used this as the basis for their grading scale until 2016, which is outlined in Figure 4.  In 2016-17 academic year the university switched to a 10-point system.

Some other institutions that use their own unique grading system include University of Madras, NALSAR University of Law, and The Indian Institutes of Technology, which tend to each use their own unique grading system depending on the campus. This is subject to change as more and more institutions adopt grading practices following the CBCS.

One more important thing to mention is that although the CBCS is more recent and tends to be more common with current postsecondary programs, there are still many programs that will be graded according to the Traditional Marks system. In addition, some institutions that follow the current CBCS could award grace marks. It is recommended to check the backsides of marks sheets for any grading information because institutions decide if they wish to award Grace Marks. If there is no information in the mark sheets, then it is recommended to check the institution’s website since many institutions will often provide their regulations regarding these grades online.

Conclusion:

Although many programs appear to follow standard grading methods, Indian grading is essentially institution specific. Converting grades from India starts with understanding the issuing institution and knowing the exact grading methodology they follow for a given program. One should become familiar with legislation and regulations regarding institutions and the rules of their programs of study.

Applicants are required to complete an application including an application form, an essay or essays, two letters of recommendation, transcripts from all post-secondary courses of study, test scores, and an application fee. A checklist and additional information are included below.

Transcripts

A Bachelors degree or the equivalent (i.e., a four-year course of study in an accredited college or university) is required for admission. A Masters degree is not required, although some applicants have a Masters degree. Superior academic performance is expected.

GMAT or GRE Scores

Note: gre/gmat scores are optional for dro phd applicants.

Applicants may take either the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), but scores from one are required. Test scores should be input into the appropriate section of the application. Admitted students will be asked to submit an official copy if there is not one on record. Decisions are not binding until these materials have been received.

  • The GRE is administered by Educational Testing Service at numerous centers throughout the United States and abroad.
  • Further information about the GMAT is available from the Graduate Management Admissions Council (GMAC) .
  • Test scores are only one of many factors that are considered when the School makes admission decisions and there is no minimum score that must be met in order to apply.

English Equivalency Exam

Applicants from abroad must also take either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the IELTS unless they received a degree from an institution where English was the language of instruction.

The Accounting Division is interested in your reasons for pursuing doctoral studies. Please describe them in an essay that is fewer than 1000 words.

Decision, Risk, and Operations

The Decision, Risk and Operations Division is interested in your reasons for pursuing doctoral studies. Please describe them in an essay that is fewer than 1000 words.

Essay Instructions: The Admissions Committee is interested in your reasons for pursuing doctoral study. In an essay no longer than 1000 words, please describe your educational goals, research interests, and professional objectives. If you have already formulated plans for dissertation-level research, please describe them as specifically as possible. Additionally, please describe the academic and/or professional achievements that have contributed most to your development and the formation of your goals and interests.

The Management Division is interested in your reasons for pursuing doctoral studies. Please describe them in an essay that is fewer than 1000 words. and indicate the subarea to which you are applying (Organizational Behavior, Strategy, Organizational Theory).

The Marketing Division is interested in your reasons for pursuing doctoral studies. Please describe them in an essay that is fewer than 1000 words in length and indicate the subarea (consumer behavior or quantitative modelling) that seems like the best fit for you, given your background. Note that your selection at this time is not binding. In fact, our PhD program has a set of core classes that all students take regardless of the subarea you indicate in your application and you are free to work on any marketing-related topics using the most appropriate methodologies.

Recommendations

Two letters of recommendation are required. However, a total of four may be submitted.

Research Paper (DRO Only, Optional)

Applicants to the Decision, Risk, and Operations Division are encouraged to submit up to two research papers as part of their application, if they have them. The application form provides the option to submit research papers under Essays.

Application Fee

An application fee of US$100 must be submitted with your application. An application is not considered complete until the fee has been paid.

Fee waivers are available to active duty US military personnel, and members of the Peace Corps, Teach for America, Teach for China, or Teach for India who are currently in service. Applicants who qualify for a fee waiver should email a fee waiver request, as well as proof of service, to [email protected] .

Types of post-secondary schools

In Canada, there are 3 different types of post-secondary schools

  • universities

At most post-secondary schools, the school year is divided into 2 main terms and an optional summer term.

  • Term 1: September to December
  • Term 2: January to April
  • Optional summer term: May to August

Each province and territory makes sure each school and its programs meet a certain set of standards. Schools aren’t officially recognized until they’re certified.

The Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials (CICIC) also maintains a directory of recognized schools in Canada.

Study at a university

Universities offer programs on a wide range of topics at different levels of difficulty and complexity. When you successfully complete a university program, you’re awarded with a university degree that reflects the type of program you completed. There are 3 types of degrees.

  • Bachelor’s degree : This is the simplest degree offered by Canadian universities. It typically takes 3 to 4 years to complete.
  • Master’s degree : This is a more advanced degree that usually takes 1 to 3 extra years of study after you get a bachelor’s degree.
  • Doctoral degree : This is the most advanced degree offered by Canadian universities. It can take another 3 to 4 more years of study and research following a master’s degree.

In regulated professions, students must complete an internship or pass a standardized test (or series of tests) after getting the degree. You can’t work in these professions until you get the degree and pass the tests. Regulated professions include

Study at a college or institute

There are many types of colleges and institutes recognized by provinces and territories, including

  • community colleges

Colleges and institutes usually offer shorter programs than universities (1 to 3 years). Instead of degrees, they issue diplomas and certificates that qualify graduates to do specific jobs in different industries.

These industries can include

  • computer and mechanical technologies
  • health care
  • social services

  • trades (such as carpentry, electrical or plumbing)

Get your educational credentials recognized

To study at post-secondary school in Canada, you need to have your existing level of education assessed. The assessment verifies your foreign degree, diploma or certificate (or other proof of your credential) is valid and equal to a Canadian one.

Contact the post-secondary schools you are interested in to find out what kind of educational assessment they accept.

The costs of post-secondary education

All post-secondary schools charge tuition fees for their programs. For Canadian citizens and permanent residents, tuition fees are between $2,500 and $11,400 a year, depending on the school and program you’ve chosen. Tuition fees can be much higher for international students.

Students will also have to pay for

  • transportation
  • other expenses

Many students depend on financial support programs to help them cover these costs.

The federal and provincial/territorial governments all have programs that provide low-cost loans, grants and scholarships for students.

Getting your credentials evaluated is an important part of migrating from India to the United States or Canada. To complete the process as easily as possible with World Education Services (WES), you must carefully follow all of the instructions during the application process. However, if you still have questions, this blog post might offer some answers for you!

Keep reading for answers to your frequently asked questions (FAQs) about getting an Indian credential evaluation from WES.

WES Credential Evaluation Criteria for India-Educated Applicants

Does WES evaluate my college or university?

WES has evaluated documents for thousands of individuals educated in India. If you attended a duly authorized and recognized institution, it is likely that WES can evaluate your documents.

I completed a research-based program that did not issue a transcript. Can I still get an evaluation?

Yes, WES can evaluate research-based programs. Please send us a degree certificate by postal mail and send this form directly to WES in a sealed and stamped envelope.

Document Requirements

Do I need to send transcripts or mark sheets?

WES accepts both consolidated transcripts and yearly mark sheets, provided they are issued by degree-granting institutions and sent in a sealed envelope. Institutions can also send documents electronically once they have established a digital partnership with WES.

I have a master’s degree. Do I need to send my bachelor’s degree, as well?

The following criteria will help you determine if you need to send your bachelor’s degree documents:

  • You do NOT need to send your bachelor’s degree documents if you have one of the following degrees: Master of Education, Master of Engineering, Master of Philosophy, or Master of Technology.
  • If you have a master’s degree from India, and it does not fall into the categories above, you MUST also submit your bachelor’s degree documents. WES cannot evaluate the master’s degree without the bachelor’s degree.

If you got your master’s degree outside of India, you will probably not need to send bachelor’s degree documents. Our evaluators will contact you if they require further documentation for your evaluation.

Verification

Sometimes our evaluators review your documents and determine that they have further questions. WES reserves the right to verify all documents submitted for evaluation. WES will contact your institution or other authorized source to authenticate your documents. Once WES receives a response, it will proceed with your evaluation.

My school has not received your email for secondary verification (VDR). What email address did you send it to, and what can I do?

WES sends documents for secondary verification to the appropriate designated official at each institution. You typically do not need to take part during this transaction.

Why does WES verify documents?

Our goal is to evaluate documents accurately and confirm that each one is valid. Because of our rigorous authentication practices, many academic institutions, licensing bodies, and immigration authorities trust credential evaluations from WES.

What are my options if my institution will not send my documents directly to WES?

As of August 2021, WES accepts sealed envelopes directly from India-educated applicants in most instances. Check your Required Documents for more information and instructions.

You can also encourage your institution to initiate a digital partnership with WES. Then, they will be able to easily transfer documents to WES electronically. To learn more, an official from your institution simply needs to Contact Us .

Known for having transformed the Delhi education scenario in government schools from poor to very good, even better in performance than private schools in the National Capital Territory, in just a decade, AAP government is now on the way to transform Punjab school education to provide high quality education for all within six years. Punjab is the second state under the party’s rule.

The target is to change the current scenario, just as it was changed in Delhi, in which quality education is not available to the students from the poor families since they can’t afford high cost of quality education provided by the private schools. The scheme will be supported by the World Bank.

The government programme is guided by the “Punjab Vision Document – 2047” and encompasses the state’s target for school education for 2024-2030. It would ensure all girls and boys have access to high-quality pre-primary, primary, upper-primary, secondary and higher secondary education; all youth achieve literacy and numeracy; more number of youth have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment; and all education facilities are safe and inclusive. The program is being implemented by the state’s education department with support from ‘Samagra Shiksha’ (SS), which is a central sector scheme covering the entire school education system from pre-school to grade 12, along with state owned schemes.

The World Bank has recently prepared a draft assessment called “Environment and Social Systems Assessment” (ESSA) for a proposed loan in the amount of US$315 million equivalent to India for the “Punjab Outcomes-Acceleration in School Education Operation” (POISE). The plan is being developed in accordance with the World Bank policy: Programme for Results Financing. The POISE will be financed through a hybrid financial modality; Programme for Results (PforR) and Investment Project Financing (PIF).

A final workshop with all relevant stakeholders, program implementers and Civil Society Organization (CSOs) in the state will be conducted to consult the draft ESSA, post which the ESSA will be finalized and disclosed, the draft ESSA read.

The Program Development Objective (PDO) is to improve learning outcomes and teaching and strengthen school management in Punjab. The proposed POISE duration will be for a period of six years (estimated from September 2024 to June 2030). The proposed operation will benefit from the experiences and lessons learned from the World Bank’s continuing engagements on education reforms in India, both at the national and state level, as well as global knowledge captured in the World Development Report (2018): Learning to Realize the Promise of Education, and World Bank’s Ready to Learn Report.

With education as one of the priority areas of development identified by the state, it is well positioned to benefit from the World Bank’s strategy of learning recovery and acceleration to overcome the learning losses caused by Covid-19 and build a resilient education system in the state.

The PforR component of the program will incentivize government’s ownership and implementation of critical reforms and policies as the PforR will support GoP’s education program which follows the State’s 2047 vision for school education. The state is experienced with the modalities of the instrument through an ongoing operation of the World Bank with the Department of Finance. The PforR Program will be supported by a small Investment Project Financing (IPF) -Technical Assistance (TA) component, which could support inter alia procurement of external resource agencies for technical assistance.

The findings and recommendations of the ESSA are based on the review of relevant environmental and social (E&S) management systems of the Samagra Shiksha (SS)program in Punjab, consultations with key staff at Department of School Education (DoSE), district and block officials, school Principals/ Headmasters, teachers, students, parents and with School Management Committee (SMC) community members, along with primary field visits across different districts and schools in Punjab (about 300 participants) along with primary field visits to districts and schools in Punjab. Consultations were also held with other departments involved and civil society members.

The Program shall adhere with the six core principles (CP) of the World Bank that guide the ESSA analysis as presented in the PforR Financing Guidelines. CP1: General Principle of Environmental and Social Management, CP2: Natural Habitats and Physical Cultural Resources, CP3: Public and Worker Safety, CP4: Land Acquisition, CP5: Indigenous Peoples and Vulnerable Groups, and CP6: Social Conflict. All the CPs, except some of the Indigenous Peoples related aspects, will be applicable for the POISE implementation.

In consistency with the sustainability principles of the WB policy: Program for Results Financing, the ESSA is intended to ensure that programs supported by PforR financing are implemented in a manner that maximizes potential Environmental & Social (E&S) benefits; and avoids, minimizes, or mitigates any E&S risks and adverse E&S impacts. For the PforR window of the Program, the ESSA examined Punjab’s existing E&S management systems as applicable to the set of activities supported. In this regard, the ESSA provides a comprehensive review of relevant government systems and procedures that address E&S issues associated with the Program.

The ESSA describes the extent to which the applicable government E&S policies, legislation, Program procedures and institutional systems are consistent with the above listed six CPs of the WB policy: Program for Results Financing and recommends actions to address the gaps and enhance performance during Program implementation.

This ESSA report does not only present a summary of the findings to which the existing Program procedures for E&S meet the applicable core principles, and where they do not, but also recommends a Program Action Plan (PAP) to address shortfalls. ( IPA Service )
