The Purity of Vengeance (Journal 64) Reviews
Like all formulas, it works, even though it tackles some rather weighty issues within its pursuit for unfinished redemption.

We are, therefore, in the field of cinema aimed at a wide spectrum of audiences, comparable in scope to books that last an airplane journey and with the same novelty as watching Detective Carl Mørck with a hangover. [Full review in Spanish]

Palm Springs Review: ‘The Purity of Vengeance’
The fourth and (for now) final screen adaptation of Jussi Adler-Olsen’s hugely popular “Department Q” mysteries is a lurid high-gloss potboiler.

Already the highest-grossing Danish film ever — with each of its predecessors following closely behind — “The Purity of Vengeance” is the fourth adaptation of Jussi Adler-Olsen ’s hugely popular “Department Q” novels about a Copenhagen cold-case police unit. It will also be the last in this particular series, as the screen rights have now transferred from Zentropa to Nordisk, with any future “Q” movies unlikely to retain the same cast or behind-scenes staples.
However lamented that baton-passing may be, there’s not much room for sentimental reflection in this high-gloss thriller, which is undeniably entertaining yet whose pleasures have the guilty edge of a particularly lurid airport read. The modern Scandinavian mysteries that have swept the globe (led by Stieg Larsson’s “Millennium” books) often have a heart-of-darkness willingness to address social and historical wrongs. But here, hot-button issues of anti-immigrant prejudice, forced sterilization, sexual abuse and more feel reduced to sensational fodder for a hectic potboiler. Director Christoffer Boe ’s deluxe packaging makes it all go down smoothly, but it’s best not to dwell overlong on plausibility or anything else once the final credits have rolled.

Though sold to numerous territories (albeit not yet in North America), it’s anyone’s guess whether “Vengeance” will make stronger box office inroads outside Europe than preceding entries. Certainly the whole series appears a natural for foreign remakes. Alas, if the royal botch Hollywood made of cashing in on the “Millennium” bonanza was any indicator, no one should hold their breath for a stateside franchise.
Popular on Variety
Misanthropic homicide detective Carl Morck ( Nikolaj Lie Kaas ), long since posted to the cold-case division as punishment for reckless conduct, is in an even fouler mood than usual. The cause of that is the imminent departure of his right-hand man, Syrian émigré Assad (Fares Fares), who’s been promoted to a different department. Of course Carl can only express this separation anxiety in surly rather than fond terms.
Yet Assad, with just one week left before transfer, can’t help plunging in when a grotesque new-old case lands on their desks: Construction workers demolishing a false wall in a seemingly abandoned apartment discover behind it three mummified corpses. Though politely seated around a tea service, they’re bound to their chairs and contorted in agony, toxicology reports soon determining that they were poisoned to death more than 30 years ago.
The flat’s owner has dutifully paid her rent from Spain for years, and proves elusive when authorities try to apprehend her there. What she and the victims all have in common are pasts linked to Sprogo, an island that once housed an institution for “troubled girls,” ranging from the mentally unstable to those whose families simply wanted them shut away. It was eventually shuttered amid abuse scandals that were nonetheless effectively hushed up by the government. In flashbacks interwoven throughout, we witness the facility at its worst via the experiences of one Nete (Fanny Bornedal), a young woman shunted here in 1961 to sever her love affair with a cousin. Creepy presiding Dr. Wad (Elliott Crosset Hove), sadistic nurse Gitte (Luise Skov) and nymphomaniacal fellow patient Rita (Clara Rosager) are chief among Nete’s tormenters in this less-than-therapeutic environ.
Meanwhile in the present, Carl & co. discover that Wad (now played by Anders Hove) is not just alive and well but the respected chief of a renowned fertility clinic, and hence protected by our protagonist’s bosses from aggressive investigation. But evidence increasingly points in his direction and suggests he may well still be violating his Hippocratic Oath. Assad discovers to his horror that a young Muslim woman of his acquaintance (Amanda Radeljak) might have been subjected to a medical procedure without her consent. His and Carl’s assistant Rose (Johanne Louise Schmidt) finds the shuttered Sprogo facility’s current caretaker (Nicolas Bro) is a wellspring of conspiracy-theory paranoia — but he might also be on to something. It all leads to a borderline preposterous but well-staged climax at Dr. Wad’s shiny new institute, with practically everybody and their mother in mortal peril.
From rape to the specter of Nazi-esque modern “genetic cleansing” and master-race rhetoric, “The Purity of Vengeance” is certainly willing to throw unpleasant subjects into the mix. The trouble is, that mix is a high-cal, low-nutrient milk shake of melodramatic contrivances too hastily jammed together to lend such disturbing themes any real weight. There’s nary a dull moment here, but the line between pulp excitement and exploitation proves thin. It may be that in getting compressed to two-hour feature length, Adler-Olsen’s dense plotting becomes a bit vulgar, exposed in a way that the 500-page book has breathing space to avoid.
That necessary condensing also leaves the performers needing to fill out broadly written characters in a few strokes, though the returning leads have the benefit of viewer familiarity. Fares and Schmidt provide the required warmth to contrast with Kaas’ somewhat caricatured curmudgeon. Hove makes an arrestingly sinister impression as the elder Mengele-like figure, while Berthe Neumann turns up late as someone with the key to the whole flat-full-o’-mummies mystery.
“Vengeance” is fast-paced and highly polished, with solid contributions from debuting feature DP Jacob Moller and all other tech/design personnel. If its slick mix of cop heroics and eugenics diabolism is a bit over-the-top, well, so was “The Boys From Brazil.”

Department Q movies ranked: boxd.it/rdliK/detail
This is my second favorite movie of the franchise (I liked the 2nd movie a little bit better) and I am impressed by the consistent quality of the movies despite the changes of directors. We once again got a dark and realistic movie but this time the plot was centered around the deaths of some girls, who were imprisoned on an island for “morally insane” women in the 60s. The island (Sprogø) was actually real and over the years they had many innocent women sterilized against their will, which only made the movie scarier. The mystery was great and the secretary Rose finally got a bigger role and a bigger importance for the story. The…

Hands down my favorite film from the franchise. Here we see Carl mørck at this most vulnerable state and secratary Rose gets more screen time and does some super secratary Donna (from suits) things, also Assad leaving makes this a bit more emotional.
It also deals with inter governmental conspiracy so that alone makes me like it more because I'm into that paranoid things, pathetic right.

Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Fares Fares have to be my favourite Danish bro couple on film. That sort of chemistry just can't be faked.
Journal 64 is the fourth movie in the Afdeling Q series written by a Danish crime novelist (Jussi Adler-Olsen). Without spoiling too much, the movie uncovers gruesome historical women's oppression (non-fictional) that actually took place in Denmark, making the film more horrid. Each movie of the Afdeling Q series has these dark, almost gothic, scene settings in various places - in the streets of Copenhagen, at their office, but especially in bars. That dark, mysterious, and sort of depressive atmosphere just drags the viewer in and makes you feel like you are physically present. I DIG IT.

wow!! damn just finished watching four films of the department-Q series in two days.. and i am impressed. the whole series is absolutely worth watching. and i loved this film also. it is well written and the acting is top-notch! specially fares as assad and nikolaj as carl <3 ... i would recommend watching the first three before watching this one.
and, right now i just need to read the novels, the inspiration behind these films must be an incredible writer!!
Review by Jens Dræby ★★ 11
Very amusing in a very bad way. The cliches are many and the story is largely uninteresting in its portrayal of danish eugenics in context of the welfare state.
I like crime thrillers even less after this.

The Fourth Summer of Scam
Just to prove Hollywood aren't the only ones who will obnoxiously reboot something when it's still very fresh in your memory, apparently they've done that with the Department Q series in Denmark now. Just three years after the release of The Purity of Vengeance.
Which concludes the story of this team satisfactorily from a character point of view, but I guess when said film becomes the most financially successful Danish film of all time domestically, then you know what will happen next. It's got Ulrich Thomsen in it though, so I'll obviously watch it at some point.
In another way, maybe this run of these stories was best concluded here. Sadly, The Purity of Vengeance,…

Abteilung Q schwächelt also kein bisschen.

I think it's the weakest film in the franchise so far, yet I still think it was entertaining enough but I couldn't get excited like I did with the previous ones.
A pity if it's true that both Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Fares Fares will abandon the franchise after this film.

"God is dead, the state fails you, but love triumphs"
What a blast I had with this franchise. Each movie is as good as the other. I liked the screenplay of all 4 movies the most. The non linear narrative perfectly suits the crime/thriller genre. Another main feature is cinematography, Denmark is so beautiful whether it is blinding cloudburst or heavy snowstorm its just spectacular. Not just crime thriller fans but everyone can enjoy these films. I have a Big soft spot for danish films now. My ranking of four movies is 1. A conspiracy of faith 2. The keeper of Lost causes 3. The absent one 4. The purity of vengeance

THE PURITY OF VENGEANCE
by Christoffer Boe
In an older apartment in Copenhagen, some craftsmen make a scary discovery: behind a fake wall, they find three mummified bodies sitting around a dining table with a free space ready. Carl Mørck and Assad from Department Q now have to find out who the mummies are and for whom the fourth place is intended. They soon discover that the previous inhabitants of the apartment trace back to an infamous women’s hospital at Sprogø island, where attempts at forced sterilization were a regular part of the daily lives of the women who were brought to the hospital. The horror at the hospital is an overdue chapter in the history of Denmark, but there are people who say that the experiments are still up in our time. Carl and Assad start a race with time to prevent new murders and assaults.

I think it won’t surprise anyone to say that the killer in the movie is obvious. In fact, the intrigue unfolds only around his motives, although they quickly become clear. But there is something else here that the detectives will investigate, so the film cannot be called boring. P.S. Rita is sexy. Translated to English
I liked this part more than the others. To the investigation, the course of which is more than interesting to follow (guessing who the criminal is is not difficult, but he is motivated and his personality is not the main goal), as a bonus there is a good conflict between Merck and Assad with a slightly melodramatic end Translated to English
A proper Scandinavian detective with a good cast. And even if it’s a rather predictable thing, it looks like a breeze. Yes, there is also a historical background. I was surprised to discover that this is the last film in the chain. Now I’ll be happy to review everything. Translated to English
All 4 parts were good. Good heroes. Good stories. The ending of part 4 was very satisfying. Maybe there will be a continuation. At least in theory it’s all over. But I want to see these heroes again. Thank you. Translated to English
The 4th film in the Mysterium series goes head to head with its previous films. All the same riddles. The plot is still interesting. Not a perfect detective story, but worth highlighting among many. Translated to English

Zachary Quinto probes emotions in 'Brilliant Minds'

"Brilliant Minds": from left, Teddy Sears as Dr. Josh Nichols, Ashleigh LaThrop as Dr. Ericka Kinney, Alex MacNicholl as Dr. Van Markus, Zachary Quinto as Dr. Oliver Wolf, Tamberla Perry as Dr. Carol Pierce, Spence Moore II as Dr. Jacob Nash, Aury Krebs as Dr. Dana Dang.
LOS ANGELES – Zachary Quinto considers it a sign: “Brilliant Minds,” his new medical series, started filming April 8, the day of the solar eclipse. His first big series, “Heroes,” showed how a solar eclipse awakened people’s powers.
“It made me feel there was something bigger at play here and made me feel even more connected to this show and to NBC again,” Quinto says.
In the drama, he plays Oliver Wolf, a neurosurgeon with a host of quirks and a desire to explore the depths of mental health. Wolf is informed by Dr. Oliver Sacks, a neurosurgeon who followed a similar path.
“He’s our North Star,” Quinto says. “It’s this very unique alchemy for me where I get to play a character who is inspired by a real-life person, but I’m not tethered to the period or the behavior of that person in real life. I get to take all the rich tapestry of who Oliver Sacks was and inform the creation of Oliver Wolf…but Oliver Wolf exists in his own world.”

Among the parallels: Sacks swam almost every day of his life, embraced alternative ways to treat patients and was deeply interested in aspects of his own mental health.
Similarly, Quinto says, Wolf is a complicated person. “He’s definitely got shadows to him. He struggles with aspects of how to relate to the world. There’s something very universal about that. But he’s a character who is always driven by a sense of compassion.”
Sacks was celibate for decades, but acknowledged he was gay later in life. Wolf is openly gay, which is a “significant honor for me,” Quinto says. “I feel deeply grateful for this experience to tell these stories and to use Oliver Sacks’ life as the origin point.”
Even though “Brilliant Minds” has plenty of medical jargon, its human stories are what interested the actors who comprise Wolf’s team.
Tamberla Perry, who plays the chief of psychiatry, “handles things a lot with her heart,” she says. “She’s unwavering and fiercely loyal.”
That helps “Brilliant Minds” humanize its cases and dig deeper than many medical series.
For Quinto, it’s the culmination of his work.
“I started acting when I was 11 years old, so it was an incredible outlet for me,” he says. “I lost my father when I was kid, so I was raised by an incredible single mother. She had to go to work and so acting, for me, became a place where I could feel safe. I could learn. I could grow. I could express a lot of the complicated emotions I was dealing with as a young person.”
That helped him land roles in series like “Heroes” and films like “Star Trek” and its sequels. Roles in several editions of “American Horror Story” provided even more variety and prompted him to try stints on Broadway in “The Glass Menagerie” and “The Boys in the Band.”
Now, the 47-year-old is also a producer of “Brilliant Minds.”
“There’s an incredible blend of the medical side of the show and then the personal side of the show. I love walking that line,” Quinto says. “I’m grateful to be on a show that has a message of hope, a message of how we’re similar more than how we’re different. That feels really vital right now.”
“Brilliant Minds” premieres in September on NBC.

Adapted from the novel by Jussi Adler-Olsen, the screenplay packs enough thrills and punches to keep the viewer on their toes for the most part. A conspiracy is unraveled slowly; we realize the subplots aren't mere subplots. Every character shown on screen has at least one or more relevant scenes.
