Norah O’Donnell to Exit as ‘CBS Evening News’ Anchor to Become Senior Correspondent

NORAH O'DONNELL CBS News

Norah O’Donnell will cede the reins of the venerable “ CBS Evening News ” after the 2024 presidential election in favor of a new role as a senior correspondent who will seek out big interviews and opportunities for deeper reporting, the latest major change at CBS News after its business was merged with that of the local-TV operations of parent company Paramount Global.

O’Donnell will continue to anchor all of CBS News’ major coverage leading up to the 2024 Election including the Democratic National Convention, Election Night, and more.  In her new role, O’Donnell will continue to contribute to “Evening News,” “60 Minutes” and other CBS News programs. The new arrangement is understood to be part of a longer-term commitment that the anchor and CBS News are making to one another.

Under McMahon, CBS News has focused more intently on utilizing both national and local journalists for broader coverage, and recently unveiled a new “whip-around” streaming concept that relies on contributions from both the journalists at CBS News and the newsrooms at various CBS-owned local stations.

McMahon sees O’Donnell’s shift as one that will help her broader efforts. “Norah’s superpower is her ability to secure and then masterfully deliver unparalleled interviews and stories that set the news cycle and capture the cultural zeitgeist,’ McMahon said in a memo, adding: “How many people can effortlessly shift from field-anchoring on an aircraft carrier in the Red Sea to sitting down with Bono and Dolly Parton? Norah’s work here is legendary, and she has several major interviews in the works that will be equally memorable and momentous.”

In some ways, the move emulates one made at ABC News that set up Diane Sawyer as a sort of roving correspondent who could take on stories and interviews that made news on their own, but weren’t necessarily tied to the immediate news cycle.

O’Donnell’s work at “CBS Evening News” has been recognized by many arbiters of quality journalism. She has long investigated how the military investigates claims of sexual harassment and abuse ; both her father and sister have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

At the same time, the august show, which has ties to Walter Cronkite, has languished in third place behind ABC’s “World News Tonight” and NBC’s “NBC Nightly News” for decades. CBS News executives in the past have considered alternatives for the program. O’Donnell took the show to Washington, D.C. , rather than its longtime roost in New York City , in a bid to cover the nation’s tumultuous political cycle more closely.

While ABC News and NBC News have backed years-long evening-news runs by anchors such as Sawyer and David Muir or Brian Williams and Lester Holt, CBS News keeps tinkering with the talent behind the desk. Since Dan Rather’s exit in 2005, CBS has tapped Bob Schieffer, Katie Couric, Harry Smith, Scott Pelley, Anthony Mason and Jeff Glor.

CBS News has not named a replacement for O’Donnell — and it is widely believed the network is not inclined to anoint a single heir. Among those who could be viewed as potential successors are Margaret Brennan, the “Face The Nation” moderator, or Major Garrett, the Washington correspondent both of whom sometimes fill in when O’Donnell is off or on assignment; James Brown, the “NFL Today” moderator and CBS News special correspondent, who also fills in on occasion; or weekend anchors Jericka Duncan or Adriana Diaz.

Norah O'Donnell to leave "CBS Evening News" anchor desk after 2024 election for new role at network

Updated on: July 30, 2024 / 3:53 PM EDT / CBS News

"CBS Evening News" anchor and managing editor Norah O'Donnell has announced that she will leave her role at the anchor desk after the 2024 election and take on a new position at the network.

"We just celebrated an amazing five years together. I love what I do, and I am so fortunate to work with the best journalists and people in the business," O'Donnell said in a message shared with the staff. "Together, our team has won Emmy, Murrow, and DuPont awards. We managed to anchor in-studio through COVID; we took the broadcast on the road from aircraft carriers to the Middle East, and around the world. We were privileged to conduct a historic interview with Pope Francis. There's so much work to be proud of!"

But O'Donnell, who previously co-hosted the network's morning news program, said she felt it was time to make a change.

"I have spent 12 years in the anchor chair here at CBS News, connected to a daily broadcast and the rigors of a relentless news cycle. It's time to do something different. This presidential election will be my seventh as a journalist, and for many of us in this business we tend to look at our careers in terms of these milestone events," she wrote.

Norah O'Donnell

Wendy McMahon, president and CEO of CBS News & Stations and CBS Media Ventures, said O'Donnell's new role will enable her to "do more of the storytelling and big interviews that are a hallmark of CBS News, as well as Norah's illustrious career."

"Norah will have the time and the support to deliver even more of the exceptional stories she is known for across our shows and streams, across CBS Network and Paramount+. She will have the real estate and flexibility to leverage big bookings on numerous platforms, including primetime specials, 60 Minutes, CBS News Sunday Morning, and more," McMahon said.

Elon Musk's transgender daughter, in first interview, says he berated her for being queer as a child

Elon Musk at an event; Vivian Jenna Wilson in a selfie

Vivian Jenna Wilson, the transgender daughter of Elon Musk, said Thursday in her first interview that he was an absent father who was cruel to her as a child for being queer and feminine.

Wilson, 20, in an exclusive interview with NBC News, responded to comments Musk made Monday about her and her transgender identity. On social media and in an interview posted online, Musk said she was “not a girl” and was figuratively “dead,” and he alleged that he had been “tricked” into authorizing trans-related medical treatment for her when she was 16.

Wilson said that Musk hadn’t been tricked and that, after initially having hesitated, he knew what he was doing when he agreed to her treatment, which required consent from her parents.

Musk’s recent statements crossed a line, she said.

“I think he was under the assumption that I wasn’t going to say anything and I would just let this go unchallenged,” Wilson said in a phone interview. “Which I’m not going to do, because if you’re going to lie about me, like, blatantly to an audience of millions, I’m not just gonna let that slide.”

Wilson said that, for as long as she could remember, Musk hasn’t been a supportive father. She said he was rarely present in her life, leaving her and her siblings to be cared for by their mother or by nannies even though Musk had joint custody, and she said Musk berated her when he was present.

“He was cold,” she said. “He’s very quick to anger. He is uncaring and narcissistic.”

Wilson said that, when she was a child, Musk would harass her for exhibiting feminine traits and pressure her to appear more masculine, including by pushing her to deepen her voice as early as elementary school.

“I was in fourth grade. We went on this road trip that I didn’t know was actually just an advertisement for one of the cars — I don’t remember which one — and he was constantly yelling at me viciously because my voice was too high,” she said. “It was cruel.”

Musk didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Wilson and her twin brother were born to Musk’s first wife, author Justine Musk. The couple divorced in 2008, and Wilson said her parents shared custody between their homes in the Los Angeles area.

Musk, 53, is among the wealthiest people in the world through his stakes in Tesla, where he’s CEO, and in SpaceX, which he founded. He has also become a significant political figure, having endorsed former President Donald Trump this month for another term in the White House. Musk has 12 children, including Wilson.

Now a college student studying languages, Wilson has never granted an interview before and has largely stayed out of public view. She did, however, attract attention in 2022 when she sought court approval in California to change her name and, in the process, denounced her father.

“I no longer live with or wish to be related to my biological father in any way, shape or form,” she said in the court filing.

She told NBC News that at the time, she was surprised by the media attention to the court filing, which she submitted when she was 18. She said in the interview that she stands by what she wrote, though she said she might have tried to be more eloquent had she known the coverage it would get.

Wilson said that she hadn’t spoken to Musk in about four years and that she refused to be defined by him.

“I would like to emphasize one thing: I am an adult. I am 20 years old. I am not a child,” she said. “My life should be defined by my own choices.”

Musk threw a spotlight on Wilson on Monday by speaking about their relationship in a video interview with psychologist and conservative commentator Jordan Peterson streamed live on X, saying he didn’t support Wilson’s gender identity.

“I lost my son, essentially,” Musk said. He used Wilson’s birth name, also known as a deadname for transgender people, and said she was “dead, killed by the woke mind virus.”

And in a post on X, Musk said Monday that Wilson was “born gay and slightly autistic” and that, at age 4, she fit certain gay stereotypes, such as loving musicals and using the exclamation “fabulous!” to describe certain clothing. Wilson told NBC News that the anecdotes aren’t true, though she said she did act stereotypically feminine in other ways as a child.

Wilson also addressed Musk’s recent comments in a series of posts Thursday on the social media app Threads.

“He doesn’t know what I was like as a child because he quite simply wasn’t there,” she wrote. “And in the little time that he was I was relentlessly harassed for my femininity and queerness.”

“I’ve been reduced to a happy little stereotype,” she continued. “I think that says alot about how he views queer people and children in general.”

In recent years, Musk has taken a hard - right turn into conservative politics and has been waging a campaign against transgender people and policies designed to support them. This month, he said he was pulling his businesses out of California to protest a new state law that bars schools from requiring that trans kids be outed to their parents.

On X, Musk has for years criticized transgender rights, including medical treatments for trans-identifying minors, and the use of pronouns if they are different from what would be used at birth. He has promoted anti-trans content and called for arresting people who provide trans care to minors.

After Musk bought X, then known as Twitter, in 2022, he rolled back the app’s protections for trans people , including a ban on using deadnames .

Musk told Peterson that Wilson’s gender transition has been the motivation for his push into conservative politics.

“I vowed to destroy the woke mind virus after that, and we’re making some progress,” he said.

Wilson was also mentioned in a biography of Musk by author Walter Isaacson — a book that she told NBC News was inaccurate and unfair to her. The book refers to her politics as “radical Marxism,” quoting Musk’s sister-in-law Christiana Musk, but Wilson said she’s not a Marxist, though she said she does oppose wealth inequality. The book also calls her by her middle name, Jenna.

Wilson said Isaacson never reached out to her directly ahead of publication. In a phone interview Thursday, Isaacson said he had reached out to Wilson through family members.

Christiana Musk didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment Thursday.

Wilson told NBC News that for years she had considered speaking out about Musk’s behavior as a parent and as a person but that she could no longer remain silent after his comments Monday.

She said she had never received an explanation for why her father spent so little time with her and her siblings — behavior that she now views as strange.

“He was there, I want to say, maybe 10% of the time. That’s generous,” she said. “He had half custody, and he fully was not there.”

“It was just a fact of life at the time, so I don’t think I realized just how abnormal of an experience it was,” she added.

Wilson said she came out twice in life: once as gay in eighth grade and a second time as transgender when she was 16. She said that she doesn’t recall Musk’s response the first time and that she wasn’t present when Musk heard from others that she was transgender, because by then the pandemic had started and she was living full-time with her mother.

“She’s very supportive. I love her a lot,” Wilson said of her mom.

The pandemic was a chance to escape Musk’s cruelty, she said.

“When Covid hit, I was like, ‘I’m not going over there,’” she said. “It was basically very lucky timing.”

Musk told Peterson in the interview that he had been “tricked” into signing documents authorizing transgender-related medical treatment for Wilson — an allegation Wilson said isn’t true.

“I was essentially tricked into signing documents for one of my older boys,” Musk said, using her birth name.

“This was before I had really any understanding of what was going on, and we had Covid going on,” he said, adding that he was told she might commit suicide.

Wilson said that, in 2020, when she was still a minor at 16, she wanted to start treatment for severe gender dysphoria but needed the consent of both parents under California law. She said that her mother was supportive but that Musk initially wasn’t. She said she texted him about it for a while.

“I was trying to do this for months, but he said I had to go meet with him in person,” she said. “At that point, it was very clear that we both had a very distinct disdain for each other.”

When she eventually went and gave him the medical forms, she said, he read them at least twice, once with her and then again on his own, before he signed them.

“He was not by any means tricked. He knew the full side effects,” she said.

She said she took puberty blockers before she switched to hormone-replacement therapy — treatments that she said were lifesaving for her and other transgender people.

“They save lives. Let’s not get that twisted,” she said. “They definitely allowed me to thrive.”

She said she believed the requirements to obtain such treatments remain onerous, with teenagers pressured to say they’re at extreme risk of self-harm before they’ll be approved. She said she felt judged by Musk and Peterson, in the Monday interview, for not being at a high enough risk in their eyes.

“I have been basically put into a point where, to a group of people, I have to basically prove whether or not I was suicidal or not to warrant medically transitioning,” she said. “It’s absolutely mind-boggling.”

Who is Imane Khelif? Bio and controversial history of Algerian Olympic boxer at Paris 2024

Author Photo

Algeria's Imane Khelif forced her Italian opponent Angela Carini to surrender in the first round of a preliminary welterweight (66kg) bout at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Thursday.

The result generated immediate discussion because Khelif has previously failed testosterone and gender eligibility tests.

When a flush right hand connected with an audible thud on the face of Carini in round one, the stricken fighter turned away in distress and beckoned her team to approach the ringside. At that moment, the Italian abandoned the bout and awarded Khelif the victory.

Carini stood in ring center and wept as the decision was made official, refusing to shake hands with the Algerian.

"I have never been hit so hard in my life. It's up to the IOC to judge," said Carini afterwards.

This was Carini's first bout of the Olympic Games and it lasted just 46 seconds. Khelif now moves into the quarterfinals, but her progress in the tournament is not what's being discussed among sports fans.

The Sporting News takes a closer look at the controversy surrounding Khelif's participation at Paris 2024.

Born on May 2, 1999, Khelif is an Algerian boxer who has been competing since 2018.

In 2022, Khelif won the African and Mediterranean Championships and reached the final of the World Championships in Istanbul. She was defeated by Ireland's Katie Broadhurst and took silver.

Khelif's first Olympic appearance was at Tokyo 2020 when she was eliminated in the quarterfinal round by another Irish participant, Kellie Harrington.

DECOURCY:  Imane Khelif's current opponent is bigger than her sport

What is the controversy surrounding Imane Khelif?

Despite reaching the final of the World Championships in March 2023, Khelif was disqualified just before the bout for "medical reasons."

In the weeks that followed, it emerged that Khelif was removed from the competition after drug tests confirmed high levels of testosterone.

Following this incident, IBA president Umar Kremlev stated that these results proved that Khelif and other female athletes with elevated levels of testosterone carried male chromosomes.

In response to this, the Algeria Olympic Committee said it "strongly condemns the unethical targeting and maligning of our esteemed athlete, Imane Khelif, with baseless propaganda from certain foreign media outlets," according to the statement via the BBC .

"Such attacks on her personality and dignity are deeply unfair, especially as she prepares for the pinnacle of her career at the Olympics. The COA has taken all necessary measures to protect our champion."

This latest incident in an Olympic bout has been no less controversial with the Italian Prime Minister addressing the issue on Thursday.

"We must be careful, in an attempt not to discriminate, to discriminate," said the country's premier Giorgia Meloni via The Daily Mail.  "This, from my point of view, was not a competition on equal terms."

After the bout, Carini said she "preferred to stop for my health", but added: "I am not here to judge or pass judgment. If an athlete is this way, and in that sense it's not right or it is right, it's not up to me to decide."

Khelif, who has lost nine of her career fights, told BBC Sport: "I'm here for the gold. I fight everybody."

Why is Imane Kelif allowed to compete after failing gender eligibility test?

The IBA no longer govern Olympic boxing, so the Paris 2024 boxing tournament has been organised by the IOC, who are standing firm on the matter.

Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting is also competing in women's boxing in Paris after being disqualified from last year's world championships for failing the same eligibility test as Khelif. The IOC has robustly defended its position.

"I would just say that everyone competing in the women's category is complying with the competition eligibility rules," said IOC spokesperson Mark Adams earlier this week.

"They are women in their passports and it is stated that is the case."

He added: "They have competed and they continue to compete in the women's competition. They have lost and they have won against other women over the years.

What have the IOC said about Imane Kelif's recent win?

A statement was released on Thursday.

Every person has the right to practise sport without discrimination.

All athletes participating in the boxing tournament of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 comply with the competition’s eligibility and entry regulations, as well as all applicable medical regulations set by the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit (PBU) ( please find all applicable rules here ). As with previous Olympic boxing competitions, the gender and age of the athletes are based on their passport.

These rules also applied during the qualification period, including the boxing tournaments of the 2023 European Games, Asian Games, Pan American Games and Pacific Games, the ad hoc 2023 African qualifying tournament in Dakar (SEN) and two world qualifying tournaments held in Busto Arsizio (ITA) and Bangkok (THA) in 2024, which involved a total of 1,471 different boxers from 172 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), the Boxing Refugee Team and Individual Neutral Athletes, and featured over 2,000 qualification bouts.

The PBU used the Tokyo 2020 boxing rules as a baseline to develop its regulations for Paris 2024. This was to minimise the impact on athletes’ preparations and guarantee consistency between Olympic Games. These Tokyo 2020 rules were based on the post-Rio 2016 rules, which were in place before the suspension of the boxing International Federation by the IOC in 2019 and the subsequent withdrawal of its recognition in 2023.

We have seen in reports misleading information about two female athletes competing at the Olympic Games Paris 2024. The two athletes have been competing in international boxing competitions for many years in the women’s category, including the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, International Boxing Association (IBA) World Championships and IBA-sanctioned tournaments.

These two athletes were the victims of a sudden and arbitrary decision by the IBA. Towards the end of the IBA World Championships in 2023, they were suddenly disqualified without any due process.

According to the  IBA minutes  available on their website, this decision was initially taken solely by the IBA Secretary General and CEO. The IBA Board only ratified it afterwards and only subsequently requested that a procedure to follow in similar cases in the future be established and reflected in the IBA Regulations. The minutes also say that the IBA should “establish a clear procedure on gender testing”.

The current aggression against these two athletes is based entirely on this arbitrary decision, which was taken without any proper procedure – especially considering that these athletes had been competing in top-level competition for many years.

Such an approach is contrary to good governance.

Eligibility rules should not be changed during ongoing competition, and any rule change must follow appropriate processes and should be based on scientific evidence.

The IOC is committed to protecting the human rights of all athletes participating in the Olympic Games as per the  Olympic Charter , the  IOC Code of Ethics  and the  IOC Strategic Framework on Human Rights . The IOC is saddened by the abuse that the two athletes are currently receiving.

The IBA’s recognition was withdrawn by the IOC in 2023 following its suspension in 2019. The withdrawal of recognition was confirmed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). See the  IOC’s statement following the ruling .

The IOC has made it clear that it needs National Boxing Federations to reach a consensus around a new International Federation in order for boxing to be included on the sports programme of the Olympic Games LA28.

When is Imane Khelif fighting again?

Khelif is scheduled to face Hungarian representative Anna Luca Hamori in the quarterfinals at welterweight (66kg) on Saturday, August 3, at 11:22 a.m. ET/ 5:22 p.m. CEST.

The verbal punches have already started with Hamori making her feelings clear on social media. "In my humble opinion, I don't think it's fair that this contestant can compete in the women's category," she said of Khelif via Instagram.

"But I cannot concern myself with that now. I cannot change it, it's life.

"I can promise you one thing... I will do my best to win and I will fight as long as I can!"

In an Instagram post that's since been deleted, the Hungarian fighter compared her opponent to a beast in a composite graphic. This action has been widely condemned.

Hamori defeated Grainne Walsh (IRL) and Marissa Williamson (AUS) to reach the quarter-finals.

Long-running Neighbours star Janet Andrewartha dies at 72

Janet Andrewartha holds up her purse at the 2005 TV Week Logie Awards

The Australian entertainment industry is paying tribute to Neighbours and Prisoner actor Janet Andrewartha, who has died aged 72.

She was best known for playing Lyn Scully in Neighbours, Reb Keane in Prisoner: Cell Block H and had recently appeared in television thriller Fake.

Social media accounts for Neighbours confirmed her death on Sunday night.

"Everyone at Neighbours is deeply saddened by the passing of Janet Andrewartha," the program said in a statement.

"Janet will be remembered for her wide body of work."

Andrewartha starred in Australian television and theatre productions since the early 1980s, returning to Neighbours several times after her initial seven-year stint.

Her last acting credits include the Asher Keddie-led psychological thriller series Fake and the SBS drama Safe Home.

Actress Jackie Woodburne, known for playing Susan Kennedy on the iconic soap, said she would miss her friend of 45 years.

"Janet was one of the finest actors of her generation, but more than that, she was an extraordinary woman," Woodburne said in the statement from Neighbours.

"Passionate, political, curious, delightfully eccentric, generous and fun."

The Herald Sun reports the 72-year-old died peacefully surrounded by family in Melbourne on Friday.

Former Neighbours co-star Stefan Dennis, who played Paul Robinson, said she would be missed.

"She truly was an exceptional actress who was a pleasure to work with and to be around," he posted to Instagram.

"We will all miss you dear girl."

Sean Hannity

Sean Hannity is a conservative radio and television host, and one of the original primetime hosts on the Fox News Channel, where he has appeared since 1996.

Sean Hannity Photo

Who Is Sean Hannity?

Early life and education.

Sean Patrick Hannity was born December 30, 1961, in New York City. The youngest child and only son of first-generation Irish immigrants Hugh and Lillian, Hannity grew up in Franklin Square, a Long Island suburb of New York. Both of Hannity’s parents worked in the justice system: Lillian as a corrections officer and court stenographer and Hugh as an officer in New York City’s family court system.

Hannity attended local Catholic schools, followed by stints at Long Island’s Adelphi University, New York University and the University of California-Santa Barbara. He did not graduate from college, choosing instead to focus on a career in radio, a fascination since childhood.

Radio Career

It was while in Santa Barbara that Hannity received his first break. In 1989 he got a position as an unpaid volunteer host on KCSB, the local college radio station. Hannity quickly tried to establish his conservative credentials, which led to a series of controversial events. After an episode in which he voiced anti-LGBT sentiments (including blaming the gay community for the AIDS crisis), and later attacked a gay fellow KCSB host, Hannity was taken off the air.

With the support of the local ACLU chapter, Hannity received permission to return to his show. Instead, he leveraged the publicity surrounding the KCSB controversy into his first paid radio position, at WVNN in Athens, Alabama, in 1990. Within a few years, Hannity’s afternoon program topped the local market, and he made a name for himself in conservative circles, including forging an early relationship with Georgia Congressman Newt Gingrich. It was in Alabama that Hannity also met his future wife Jill Rhodes.

From 1992 to 1996, his show aired on Atlanta’s WGST. In January 1997, a few months after the premiere of his Fox television program, Hannity landed at New York’s WABC, where his show aired in the late-night hours before moving to the plum afternoon “drive time” slot. Hannity changed radio homes again in early 2014, moving to New York’s WOR.

Hannity’s radio program went into national syndication on September 10, 2001, and airs on more than 500 stations. Talkers Magazine estimates Hannity’s weekly radio audience at 13.5 million, placing him just behind Rush Limbaugh ’s 14 million listeners.

Fox News Channel and Television Career

'hannity & colmes'.

In 1996 Hannity was hired as one of the original primetime hosts on the new Fox News Channel, a conservative cable television channel created by newspaper publisher and media magnate Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes, a television executive who’d spent decades as a Republican media adviser.

Hannity was paired with a more liberal co-host, Alan Colmes, and the duo’s 9 p.m. Hannity & Colmes program aired for 13 years, until Colmes left the program in January 2009. It was a ratings success, spending more than 60 consecutive months as the top program in its time slot, and averaging 3.3 million nightly viewers in the months before Colmes’ departure.

The newly rebranded Hannity program aired in the 9 p.m. slot until 2013, when it was moved to 10 p.m. to make way for a new program hosted by Megyn Kelly , a decision some media watchers saw as an attempt to attract a young demographic and shift away from some of Hannity’s more partisan views. Hannity moved back to 9 p.m. following Kelly’s departure from Fox News Channel in 2017. He continued to be a ratings draw and averaged 3.2 million nightly viewers in the first quarter of 2018.

Relationship With Donald Trump

Hannity became an early and vocal supporter of fellow New Yorker Trump’s 2016 bid for the White House. Trump himself made several appearances on Hannity’s program, especially after an infamous clash with Kelly during a Republican primary debate. Hannity played a similar role in 2009 when he was one of the first cable news hosts to provide a platform to the nascent Tea Party movement.

Trump officials also became frequent guests, and Hannity was credited with shoring up Trump’s support among the Republican base after a series of upheavals during the campaign, including Trump’s ongoing personal attacks on his critics, accusations of sexual harassment by several women and the release of a 2005 tape in which Trump was heard to use disparaging and sexist language about women.

Hannity continued to be a valued adviser to Trump following his election. President Trump appeared on Hannity’s show shortly after he was inaugurated, and the two men reportedly spoke several times a week.

In April 2018, Hannity found himself enmeshed in the ongoing examination into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election. A strong critic of the investigation led by independent counsel Robert Mueller , Hannity spoke out against a raid by federal investigators on the offices of Michael Cohen , a longtime Trump lawyer. Days later, Hannity himself made headlines when he was named in court as a legal client of Cohen’s. Hannity denied that the two had a formal legal relationship, but many criticized Hannity for his lack of transparency.

Views and Controversies

Despite his ratings successes, Hannity’s career has been controversial, and he has been criticized for his views on immigration, climate change and Islam.

He supported Donald Trump and others who questioned whether Barack Obama was born in the United States, and Hannity frequently called on the president to release his birth certificate. Hannity’s vocal opposition to Obama’s Affordable Care Act saw him support the fictitious concept of “death panels” that would decide the fate of elderly or ill patients.

An early critic of both Bill and Hillary Clinton , he gave frequent time on both his radio and television programs to the investigation surrounding Hillary’s role in the deadly attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, and welcomed guests who spoke of unsubstantiated theories surrounding Hillary’s mental and physical health.

In 2017 Hannity faced two significant controversies. The first came after he promoted a conspiracy theory surrounding the death of Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich. Hannity and others claimed that Rich was murdered because of his connection with documents released by WikiLeaks during the 2016 campaign. Washington, D.C. police said Rich was killed during a botched robbery. Several advertisers pulled out of Hannity’s programs, and in 2018 Rich’s parents sued Fox News for pushing the conspiracy surrounding their son’s death.

In late 2017, accusers (including several who were underage at the time of the events) came forward charging then-Alabama senatorial candidate Roy Moore with sexual harassment and assault. Hannity initially supported Moore, inviting him and other defenders on his programs, leading to another wave of advertisers leaving his programs, followed by counter-protests by Hannity viewers who launched a wave of boycotts against the advertising companies and their products.

Also in 2017, Hannity was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame.

In addition to his role on radio and television, Hannity is the author of Let Freedom Ring: Winning the War of Liberty over Liberalism (2002), Deliver Us from Evil: Defeating Terrorism, Despotism, and Liberalism (2004), Conservative Victory: Defeating Obama's Radical Agenda (2010) and Live Free Or Die: America (and the World) on the Brink (2020)

Personal Life

Hannity married Jill Rhodes since 1993, and the couple has two children. Hannity and Rhodes divorced in 2019.
