Introduction

This program, which spans a minimum of three years, provides an established and successful route to a professional doctorate. It is aimed at academics and professionals who wish to become effective members of the research community. This program is designed, structured and assessed in a way that supports distance and on-campus study, research and training. It utilizes evaluation criteria and guidelines that lead to achieving the PhD objectives.

Note: PhD Computer Science program is offered only once a year.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

Admission Eligibility Criteria

• 18-year education i.e., MS / M.Phil in Computer Science / Information Technology / Computer Engineering / Software Engineering or equivalent with thesis and minimum CGPA 3.0 out of 4.0 in the Semester System or 1st Division in the Annual System. For any other qualification, which corresponds to 18 years of education but does not fall under semester system or annual system or degree obtained from foreign country, then the student should obtain degree equivalence certificate from Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC) to determine the academic eligibility for PhD.
• Each candidate is required to pass the VU Entry Test with minimum 70% marks OR 60% marks in GRE Subject Test along with interview and presentation.

Assessment of Study Progress

The students’ study progress evaluation mechanism is based on continuous assessment throughout the semester by giving assignments, Quizzes, Graded Discussion Boards (GDBs), academic papers, seminars, mid-term and final term examinations.

Research Thesis

The students are required to submit a Research Thesis. Topic of the thesis must be decided after consultation with the supervisor.

Award of degree

For the award of PhD in Computer Science degree, a student is required to complete 18 credits hours of prescribed course work with minimum CGPA of 3.00 out of 4 along with Dissertation/Thesis of 12 credit hours. The student has also to:-

• Pass written and oral comprehensive examinations securing minimum 65% and 50% marks respectively, with maximum two attempts;
• Defend PhD research proposal;
• Get published at least one research paper in HEC recognized journal as first author;
• Get presented/read one research paper in a national/international conference as first author;
• Get approved dissertation from two foreign experts.

Fall Admission 2024

Applicants must meet the minimum eligibility criteria to be considered for admission to the PhD Management Programme. 

Admission is purely merit-based and rests solely on the following criteria:

• Research Statement ( Research Statement Template );

Two Letters of Recommendation;

• Submission of complete online application, application processing fee and supporting documents by the stipulated deadline;

Application Review; and

• Interview (if called)

This is the minimum criteria that applicants need to fulfil in order to be eligible to apply. Fulfilment of this criteria does not guarantee admission to LUMS.

Academic Record

Applicants are required to have obtained their Undergraduate and/or Graduate degrees related to Management, including but not limited to Economics, Accounting, Finance, and Operations. We welcome applications from other fields as well, especially from Social Sciences and Engineering, but such applicants may be required to complete some non-credit coursework.

As a minimum academic performance, all applicants must have obtained a  CGPA of at least 3.0 (on a scale of 4)  or  First Division (60% in the annual system)  in their Master’s degree (MPhil/MS/Equivalent).

Applicants completing their last degree or attempting final year exams by May 30, 2024, are also eligible to apply for Fall 2024 admissions.

Test Requirement

Applicants are required to take One (1) of the following tests in order to be considered for the Fall 2024 admissions:

Graduate Management Admission Test ( GMAT )

GMAT score is valid for Five (5) years. Scores of GMAT taken before April 28, 2019 will not be considered valid for the Fall 2024 admissions. For further details, please visit www.mba.com

Graduate Record Examination ( GRE )

GRE (General) score is valid for Five (5) years. Scores of GRE (General) taken before April 28, 2019 will not be considered valid for the Fall 2024 admissions. For further details, please visit www.ets.org

If the applicant has taken more than one test or attempt, the best score of a single test or attempt will be considered for application evaluation.

The LUMS code for receiving GMAT/GRE (General) scores from Pearson and ETS is  0679 .

The admission application will be considered for evaluation after the successful completion of the following Four (4) STEPS by the applicants on or before the stipulated deadlines: 

Online admission application submission;

Online submission of scanned copies of required supporting documents;

Submission of an appropriate application processing fee; and

Online submission of the letters of recommendation by the referees.

Application Processing Fee

The application processing fee of PKR 9,150

The application processing fee of USD 150 for International applicants.

Applicants must complete and submit their Online Admission application on or before April 16, 2024; 5:00 pm (PKT). 

Applicants are required to submit scanned copies of all supporting documents on or before April 17, 2024 .

After the successful submission of the Online application, applicants must make the Processing Fee payment by the deadline.

Referees must submit completely filled the Letters of Recommendation by the given deadline. 

Completion of all steps is mandatory. Applications, documents, or fee received after the stipulated deadline will not be processed. 

Application Review/Interview Performance

Applicants are encouraged to provide complete and correct information regarding their academic achievements, research reports, attended workshops, and extracurricular activities, and must tell LUMS about their success stories to substantiate their applications. Applications will be reviewed by the relevant Committee. Shortlisting for interviews will be done based on the applicant's academic achievement, quality of work experience, and admission test scores. Only short-listed candidates will be called for the interviews.

Letters of Recommendation

Minimum two (2) Letters of Recommendation are compulsory for applying to the PhD Management Programme.

Research Statement

To complete the application process for the PhD Programme applicants must submit a comprehensive research proposal. The PhD dissertation is a substantial undertaking involving empirical research, and its primary objective is to advance the existing body of knowledge within the academic management community on a specific subject of interest.

The PhD programmes at LUMS are fully funded for 4 years of education. Additionally, PhD candidates are given a monthly stipend as per University policy.

Students are required to pay general security (refundable) at the time of admission.

GMAT/GRE scores are valid for five years. GMAT/GRE taken five years before the admission deadline will not be considered valid.

Whom should i ask to write a letter of recommendation for me.

We recommend that at least one should be from a supervisor in your professional career. The other letter can be from a faculty member who can evaluate you academically.

How many letters of recommendation should I submit?

Minimum two (2) letters of recommendation are required.

Do you have any age limit for admission to the PhD Management programme?

No, there are no age restrictions for admission to the PhD Management programme.

No, our system for reviewing applications is completely online so we must receive your application electronically using our online application service.

What is the application process?

- Application for admission to the PhD Management programme is an online process (there is no paper based application to fill out or mail).

- After creating an account and accessing the online admission application you may then begin to complete your application.

- You can work on your application at any time and submit it when you are ready. Please note that we expect applicants to adhere to the deadlines stated on the LUMS website.

- After submission you may print a copy for your own use.

How will you notify me regarding a decision on my application?

Admission decisions will only be communicated via courier service. Regretfully, we are unable to provide the final application status by telephone or e-mail inquiry.

May I appeal my admission decision or ask to have the decision explained?

The admission process is a well deliberated and thorough process. Each year we receive a large number of outstanding applications. Unfortunately, all of them do not qualify because of the limited number of available seats. The decision regarding admission is final.

If your application is unsuccessful you will also receive a letter informing you of this. Due to the volume of applications the University receives; it is not possible to provide feedback on unsuccessful applications.

Who is considered an international applicant?

A foreign national who is not of Pakistani origin and does not have a Pakistani passport/NICOP/CNIC is eligible to apply to LUMS under its International Student Programme. Applicants holding dual nationality out of which one is Pakistani are not eligible to apply through LUMS International Student Programme.

What is the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan?

Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan is an independent, autonomous, and constitutionally established institution of primary funding, overseeing, regulating, and accrediting the higher education efforts in Pakistan. HEC is responsible for formulating higher education policy and quality assurance to meet the international standards as well as providing accrediting academic degrees, development of new institutions, and uplift of existing institutions in Pakistan.

How do I get equivalence from Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan?

LUMS Financial Aid

LUMS provides funding to PhD students in terms of scholarship and research assistantship. The University’s policy is to admit students purely on merit, regardless of their financial status or background. The PhD Programmes at LUMS offer a fully-funded scholarship which covers the following:

• Admission Fee
• Tuition fees
• Semester Registration fee
• Monthly Stipend subject to the approval of the Supervisor
• The scholarship is for four (4) years, to meet the minimum graduation requirement of the Programme.
• The payment of allowances admissible under the Scholarship shall be made subject to the complete adherence to all rules and regulations governing the scholarship and satisfactory performance within the allocated degree Programme.

Teaching assistantships is another opportunity that may be available to doctoral students for additional financial assistance, subject to faculty approval. If a student receives funding from another source, the said amount of fee waiver and/ or scholarship allowance given by LUMS would be adjusted accordingly. Please note that the fee waiver and/ or scholarship funding is approved initially for one year and is renewable based on academic performance.

General Eligibility Criteria for International Students

• Eighteen years of education (MS/ MPhil) in a related discipline.
• Candidates awaiting final results of their MS/ MPhil degree can also apply for PhD admission, provided that they submit their final result before the commencement of classes.
• Eligible candidates will be asked to appear for the interview.

• ​​​The scores of admission test i.e. GRE/GAT/G-NET and HAT should be attached/mentioned in the application. It may be noted that NUST will only accept the scores of GRE (General) examinations conducted on or after October 01, 2020. The candidates are responsible for providing the copy of scores to NUST.
• Candidate who want to appear in one of the aforementioned tests after Joining the classes must clear the test before final exam of first semester.

• 10th Grade/ O-Level/ SSC Certificate / DMC or equivalence.

Admission Timeline for International Students:

Each year, international students interested in joining NUST can submit their applications online through dedicated international student application portal: https://intl-admission.nust.edu.pk/ . The application window for the September intake opens annually in January and for Spring intake the application portal opens in May of the preceding year. For instance, if you aspire to commence your studies in September 2024, we encourage you to initiate your application process from 1st January 2024 and for Spring 2025, you can apply in start application in May 2024.

  Fee Structure:

• Tuition fee will be charged on annual basis.
• Miscellaneous charges will be charged @USD 34/year.
• Subsequent, tuition fee will be paid through challan form generated by Finance Directorate, NUST. The structure and schedule of payment will be intimated to the selected candidates.
• The security deposit is payable along with the admission processing fee at the time of admission.

Note: All fees and other charges are subject to revision from time to time.

  Scholarships:

• Aligned with the Government the Government of Pakistan’s commitment to fostering diplomatic ties, and establishing professional connections with friendly nations, as well as supporting the development of countries grappling with underdevelopment or post-conflict situations, diverse scholarship opportunities for PhD degree programs—covering only tuition fees.
• NUST offers various scholarships ranging between 25% and 80% on tuition fees for PhD students.
• NUST also offers international students Fee Remission scholarship that will adjust their fee to be equivalent to the tuition fee for national students.
• All eligible international students can apply, evaluated based on academic profile, financial need, leadership, and community service.

     Scholarship Application Process:

• Applicants must submit a 300-400-word personal statement with their admission application, selecting the scholarship option.
• The statement should highlight motivation, career objectives, impact of the scholarship, leadership, and community service.
• The Scholarship Application Review Committee considers academic performance, diversity, financial need, leadership, and community service.

• Hostel accommodation for the international students is guaranteed in H-12 campus of NUST. However students have to apply for hostel. Course Detail

The mission of the PhD research program in business management is to pursue leading-edge research, engage in the development of innovative ideas and analytical skills, and encourage both faculty and students to be independent and creative in their thinking. The outcome of this research program is the creation of a real and measurable impact on society and industry through quality research published in impact factor journals and recognized by industry.

Eligibility

MS or equivalent graduates from HEC recognized institutions meeting the following criteria:

• A minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a scale of 4.00 (or overall 60% marks) or equivalent
• A minimum of 18 years of schooling that corresponds to MS / MPhil or equivalent degree from HEC recognized institutions in a relevant discipline. Students with HEC recognized MBA have to do at least four pre-requisite courses (HEC equivalency required)
• GRE Subject or GAT subject test conducted by the NTS or HAT subject test of HEC. A minimum of 60% (percentage) marks is required or a minimum of 70% marks in IoBM test
• An interview conducted by the Institute
• All other HEC stipulated requirements

Program Requirements

PhD requires completion of course work and dissertation/thesis. Minimum duration is three years and maximum is seven years:

• PhD course work requirements consist of six graduate level courses (18 credit hours)
• On completion of dissertation/thesis the student is awarded 30 credits

A PhD student must additionally complete the following requirements:

• PhD Proposal/Synopsis Development

Graduate Courses:

It is mandatory for research students of MPhil and PhD programs to attend research proposal / thesis defense / multi-disciplinary research seminars in each semester. Students must dedicate Saturdays (12:00 to 2:00 PM) for this attendance.

The PhD in Health Sciences programme is accredited by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in Pakistan. ​​​​This is an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary programme with four specialities / streams.

​Eligibility Criteria​

Following is the eligibility criteria applicable​​​ for 2024-2025.​ 

• ​Candidates must have 18 years of education including a MS / MPhil or equivalent degree in relevant field based on a minimum of 30 credits after 16 years of education. A minimum CGPA 3.0 (out of 4.0 in the Semester System) or First Division – 60% (in the Annual System) in MS / MPhil / FCPS / FRCP / equivalent degree is required. 

The University may request for additional documents to better understand and evaluate applicant’s eligibility as per University and regulatory body requirements. ​

Introduction

The Department of Arabic is offering PhD Arabic. The PhD students are required to complete course work & research work under the supervision of a qualified supervisor. This program requires 3 to 5 years’ time for completion. The students are completing research work under domestic supervisors however the degree is awarded after the evaluation the thesis by three foreign experts from technological advanced countries as required by HEC. This program has been designed to carry out research in different fields of Arabic in order to discover new aspects in the field & students can exercise independent critical judgment through the research skills.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES OF PhD Arabic

The PhD Arabic is aimed:

• To address local issues related to linguistics  and provide viable solutions through research.
• To promote research culture (in general) in Arabic and in regional languages (in particular) in the country.
• To explore new knowledge related to linguistics and promote it nationally as well as internationally.
• To develop students’ insight into the current and emerging trends in Arabic and to enable them to make an original contribution to research in the field of Arabic.
• To expand students’ insight into different linguistic theories and to enhance their critical and analytical skills to identify different linguistic issues at global and regional level.
• To develop students’ understanding regarding research methodologies to explore the crucial issues in different branches of Arabic.
• To develop student understanding of multiple perspectives of interface of language, media and discourse practices in society and to enable learners to incorporate technological features to facilitate research in Arabic.

The departmental subject Test for admission and Interview of candidates (who fulfill the admission criteria for PhD Arabic as mentioned earlier will be held by the Department concerned at AIOU Main Campus H-8, Islamabad.

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

The eligible candidates are required to bring along-with them all original educational documents/degrees/thesis/research paper/ experience certificate/CNIC for verification. Candidates are advised to provide attested copy of any of the testimonial that was not attached with the application from positively for verification/identification.

Eligibility Criteria

• M.Phil Arabic/ MS Arabic or equivalent degree with at least 60% marks  or  3.00 CGPA equivalent.
• Passing the Written Test and interview conducted by the Department Concerned based on 70% passing marks.       

Selection Process

The Admission in PhD Arabic Program will be advertised once in (Autumn/Spring semester) each year. The admission is announced in almost all national and important regional newspapers each year. Prospectus can be obtained from Main Campus of AIOU, H-8 Islamabad or from any regional campuses and online. The applications are processed by the Dept. of Arabic, Block-10, AIOU H-8, Islamabad. All applications are evaluated on the basis of the Board of Advance Studies & Research (BASR)’s approved criteria. Short listed candidates will be called for Departmental test and interview. The admission will be confirmed after passing admission written test and interview conducted by the admission committee of PhD Arabic depositing of admission fee .
