جب میں لفظ “امی” سنتی ہوں تو چونک جاتی ہوں۔ ایسا لگتا ہے یہ لفظ کبھی میرے لیے بھی شناسا تھا۔۔۔کبھی اس لفظ کو بارہا میں نے بھی اپنی زبان سے ادا کیا تھا۔ لیکن آج جب میں اس لفظ کو بولنے کی کوشش کرتی ہوں تو رک جاتی ہوں ، ہونٹ لڑکھڑانے لگتے ہیں، زبان ساتھ نہیں دیتی، ذہن ودماغ میں ہلچل مچنے لگتی ہے۔ میرے اوپر سکتہ طاری ہو جاتا ہے۔۔۔

ابھی بھی یہ لفظ بارہا میری زبان سے نکلتے ہیں لیکن میں جس طرح پہلے بولا کرتی تھی اب بول نہیں پاتی ہوں۔کبھی خالہ، کبھی آنٹی، کبھی تائی غرض کہ جو بھی ہے سب کو میں لفظ “امی”سے مخاطب کرنے کی کوشش کرتی ہوں لیکن مجھے ایسا لگتا ہے میری زبان سے لفظ” امی”صحیح سے ادا نہیں ہو رہا ہے۔۔

آخر کیوں! یہ سوال میں بارہا خود سے کرتی ہوں لیکن مجھے تشفی بخش جواب نہیں ملتا ہے۔۔۔اے خدا میرے ساتھ ایسا کیوں ہوا؟ کیا ہم بہن بھائیوں کو ماں کی ضرورت نہیں تھی؟ کیا ہم اپنی ماں کا فرض ادا نہیں کر سکتے تھے؟ کیا ہم سے کوئی غلطی ہوئی تھی جو امی ہم سب سے ناراض ہوکر گھر چھوڑ کر قبرستان میں لیٹی ہیں۔جہاں سے ان کی صدائیں بھی نہیں آتی ہیں۔۔۔

جب کوئی ماں اپنے بچے کو پیار سے پکارتی ہے تو ہمارے بھی کان کھڑے ہو جاتے ہیں۔کبھی ہماری امی بھی مجھے اور بھائیوں کو ایسے ہی پکارا کرتی تھیں۔ کیا میری امی کا جانا ضروری تھا؟ کیا ہمیں ماں کی ضرورت نہیں تھی اور بچوں کی طرح؟ کیا ہمارا دل نہیں کرتا کہ ہم سب بھی اپنی ماں کے ساتھ رہتے جیسے اور بچے رہتے ہیں؟

امی آپ ہم سب سے ناراض کیوں ہو گئیں؟ ہم آپ کو تنگ نہیں کرتے آپ جو کہتیں وہی کرتے۔ اے خدا تو ہمارا سب کچھ لے لے بس ہمیں ہماری ماں لوٹا دے۔۔۔نہیں چاہیے مجھے یہ کھلونے یہ سجاوٹ کے سامان۔۔۔۔مجھے میری امی چاہیے ۔۔۔۔۔آج یہ سب مل کر امی کی کمی کو پورا نہیں کر سکتے اور ہماری ایک اکیلی امی سب کی کمی پوری کر دیتی تھیں۔

سنا ہے نانی بھی امی کو بچپن میں چھوڑ کر چلی گئی تھی وہاں جہاں سے کوئی نہیں آتا۔ اس لیے امی بھی ہم سب کو چھوڑ کر چلی گئیں اپنی امی سے ملنے۔ اے خدا! کیا یہ ضروری تھا کہ نانی چلی گئی تھیں تو امی بھی چلی جاتیں؟

اے خدا! تو سب دیکھ رہا ہے۔ آخر ہمارے ساتھ ایسا کیوں ہوا۔ تونے مجھ سے میرا پاپا بھی لے لیا۔ پاپا امی کی کمی کو دو سال بھی برداشت نہیں کر سکے اور وہ بھی ہم سب کو چھوڑ کر چلے گئے امی سے ملنے۔۔۔آخر ایسا کیوں! تو میرے اپنوں سے قبرستان سجا رہا ہے اور ہمارے گھر میں تاریکی پھیلا رہا ہے۔ اے خدا تجھے سب سے زیادہ نانی پسند تھیں تونے انہیں بھی بلا لیا پھر امی کی ماں کی کمی کو پورا کرنے والے دادا دادی کو بھی بلا لیا پھر امی کا کوئی سہارا نہیں تھا تو اسے بھی پھر پاپا کو بھی۔

اے خدا! کیا یہ ضروری تھا کہ جو میری امی کے ساتھ ہوا وہی ہم سب کے ساتھ ہو؟ لوگ امی کو یتیم کہتے تھے اب ہمیں یتیم کہتے ہیں۔ کیا یہ یتیم لفظ ہمارے لیے تاریخ بن گیا ہے جسے وقفے وقفے کے ساتھ دہرایا جا رہا ہے۔۔۔ اے خدا! تونے امی کو لے لیا۔۔۔۔ہم سہ رہے ہیں۔۔تونے پاپا کو بھی بلا لیا ہم سہ رہے ہیں۔۔۔۔ لیکن اے خدا میری ایک التجا ہے،ایک فریاد ہے یہ لفظ یتیم صرف ہم سب بہن بھائیوں پر ہی وقف کر دے۔۔۔ اے خدا اب تو کسی بچے سے اس کے والدین کو دور نہ کرنا ۔۔اے خدا تو ساری خوشیاں لے لینا لیکن ماں کو بچے سے جدا نہ کرنا۔۔

اے خدا ہم بچے ہیں۔ لوگ کہتے ہیں ہمیں عقل وشعور نہیں ہے ابھی کیا سمجھ آئے گا جب بڑا ہوگا تو والدین کی کمی محسوس ہوگی۔۔۔لیکن انہیں کیا پتہ بڑوں سے زیادہ بچوں کو ماں کے آغوش کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے۔باپ کے شفقت کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے۔۔بڑوں کا تو نہیں پتہ لیکن ابھی ہم سب جس طرح پاپا امی کی کمی کو محسوس کرتے ہیں وہ دنیا کی کوئی زبان بیان نہیں کر سکتی۔۔۔کوئی قلم اس محسوسات کو رقم نہیں کر سکتا ،کوئی ادیب ہماری کہانی کو رقم نہیں کر سکتا۔۔۔۔اس کے ہاتھ کانپ جائیں گے، زبان لڑکھڑا پڑیگی، قلم خاموش ہو جائے گی،ورق بھیگ جائیں گے ، آنسوؤں کے سیلاب سے۔ قصے بہت موجود ہونگے کتابوں میں لیکن ہماری کہانی سب سے جدا ہے۔

ہماری کہانی سننے والوں کے آنکھوں سے آنسو نکل پڑتے ہیں۔ لوگ افسوس کرتے ہیں لیکن ہمارا دل فریاد کرتا ہے اے خدا ہمارے ساتھ جو ہوا۔ راہ بھی تو ہی دکھائے گا۔۔۔۔ لیکن اب کسی بچے سے اس کی ماں کے آغوش سے، آنچل کے سائے سے۔، اپ کے شفقت بھرے سایہ دار درخت کی چھاؤں سے کبھی دور مت کرنا۔اے خدا ہماری فریاد سن لینا اب ہمارے اندر ہمت نہیں سننے کی کہ بنا ماں باپ کا بچہ ہے۔

لیکن سب کہتے ہیں “امی” کو خدا نے اپنے پاس بلا لیا ہے۔جہاں سے کوئی واپس نہیں آتا۔ کچھ دن تو یہی آس تھی ماں واپس آئے گی۔ بھائ کہتا تھا ماں ڈاکٹر کے پاس گئی ہے ہمارے لیے کھلونے اور کپڑے لیکر آئے گی لیکن وہ بھی اب سمجھ گیا ہے۔جب میں امی امی پکار کر روتی ہوں تو کہتا ہے ” امی تو اللہ تعالیٰ کے پاس چلی گئی اب نہیں آۓ گی۔۔۔”

Joy of Urdu aims to celebrate the richness of the language and its heritage.

“One day he was crossing the sea on a voyage to trade silks from faraway lands. His ship suddenly ran into a story. While the rest of the sailors raised their hands in prayer, he tried to buy his life by throwing his wealth into the ocean.”

This a snippet of a story from the Persian literary masterpiece Gulistan-e-Saadi, translated into Urdu and English.

In November 2023, the Joy of Urdu launched a coffee table edition of three stories from Gulistan-e-Saadi, a collection of moral tales and aphorisms by 13th-century poet Sheikh Saadi Shirazi.

The book, which took nearly six years to complete, has a glossary, activities and beautiful illustrations. Aimed at adults and art lovers, the edition features a foreword by professor and linguistics expert Arfa Syeda Zehra. “A story may unlock the enchantment of language belatedly, yet it ignites the sparks of imagination early on,” said Zehra.

According to a Joy of Urdu press release, the edition is expected to be “a foundation for learning Urdu by providing an alternative to Urdu pedagogy and perception”. Joy of Urdu, a volunteer-run, bilingual, international organisation launched in 2013, had published the book on its 10th anniversary last year.

Joy of Urdu aims to celebrate the richness of Urdu – the lingua franca and official national language of Pakistan – and heritage through diverse perspectives.

The book launch is an exciting new chapter for the Joy of Urdu – already, multiple chapters in cities across the world have been working at finding a community through discussions, interactive reading groups, and internship opportunities.

Zarminae Ansari, an architect and writer from Pakistan now based in Portugal, is the founder of Joy of Urdu. When asked why Joy of Urdu chose to translate stories from Gulistan-e-Saadi for its first publication, Ansari said that the stories from the text, as well as Saadi’s other work, Bustan, hold significance for older, educated families.

“Persian, much like Arabic, historically served as a supplementary language in education,” Ansari told Sapan News over the phone. “And it is not as divorced from Urdu as it’s being politically made out to be.” Presented in rhyming form, these tales helped children learn Persian besides also conveying “deeper spiritual and metaphysical meanings” over the years.

Art and resistance

Behind Joy of Urdu’s creation and evolution lies an integral connection with slain entrepreneur and human rights activist Sabeen Mahmud, who was a firm believer in Ansari’s vision.

Ansari had moved from Moscow to Paris in 2014 when she discussed the project with her close friend Sabeen Mahmud. Ansari told Mahmud that she felt her professional expertise wasn’t a perfect match for this type of work. Mahmud’s response: “Just do the work, and you’ll get the help you need.”

Mahmud’s wisdom and clarity through their conversations was a key factor in setting up the Joy of Urdu. Ansari admired and emulates Mahmud’s ability to lead projects while remaining unassuming in the background.

In 2015, Ansari was supposed to meet Mahmud in Karachi to discuss the initiative. But the meeting never took place as Mahmud was killed .

Mahmud’s death only strengthened Ansari’s resolve to honour her memory and continue the mission they both believed in. “In the next five years, I went underground pouring all my energy into fulfilling the promise I made to Sabeen by focusing on the Joy of Urdu,” she says.

Ten years later, she says “it’s wild” to think that people will volunteer for an organisation for a decade. But “it’s not about me; it’s about a cause”, she said. “If others are working for Joy of Urdu, then so am I.”

One notable manifestation of this is the “Poetry of Resistance” campaign that emerged in response to Israel’s assault on Gaza after Hamas terrorists attacked and killed Israelis on October 7. The initiative included programmes showcasing the work of Urdu poets like Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Mahmoud Darwesh and Habib Jalib, focusing on Palestinian resistance .

Since then, Ansari has proudly worn a keffiyeh at every significant occasion – even at her first book signing – because “while I’m celebrating that momentous occasion, Palestine and human rights aren’t far away from my mind,” said Ansari.

Social media

As clips from these events made their way onto the Joy of Urdu’s Instagram page, accompanied by hashtags, their account, like many others posting about Gaza, was shadow banned, losing followers.

Several social media users have accused social media giants of stifling, suppressing and even arbitrarily removing posts on Gaza.

Alongside this are Ansari’s difficulties juggling resources for the Joy of Urdu. At one point, the demands caused “extreme depression” and Ansari thought about pursuing government grants.

Seeking guidance, Ansari turned to Mahenaz Mahmud, Sabeen Mahmud’s mother in Karachi. “There was a time when there were many NGos chasing Sabeen, and people assumed she was getting money from them,” Ansari said, recounting Mahenaz Mahmud’s words. “She [Sabeen Mahmud] showed no interest and refused.”

Mahenaz’s words came as a “sigh of relief” for Ansari who had also assumed that Sabeen Mahmud was being funded. “But it completely makes sense that she wasn’t,” Ansari said. “Sabeen knew the drill: when they offer you money, they come with their own hidden agendas. And you have got to play by their rules.”

Due to the broader reach and impact of the Joy of Urdu initiative, Ansari still struggles to carry on without sufficient funding and resources but she hasn’t lost hope.

“We are not there for likes and follows. We are not influencers or an entertainment hub,” she said. “Yes, we are struggling and we need money. But we mustn’t lose sight of our mission – to fill a void and provide a service that was not there.”

The Joy of Urdu now has six books for adults and children poised to enter production soon. There are also plans for merchandise, workshops, and other related projects.

The Joy of Urdu’s focus on linguistic preservation, cultural enrichment, plus promotion of social justice, and positive change through bilingual presentations and discussions helps ensure that the richness of Urdu remains alive in modern times.

Unconventional Sex Let Anglerfish Conquer the Deep Ocean

How did the ghoulish creatures known as anglerfish pull off the evolutionary feat that let them essentially take over the ocean’s sunless depths?

It took peculiar sex — extremely peculiar sex.

Scientists at Yale University have discovered that a burst of anglerfish diversification began some 50 million years ago as the ancestral line developed a bizarre strategy to ensure successful reproduction in the dark wilderness.

To mate, tiny males would clamp with sharp teeth onto the bellies of much larger females. Some males would let go after mating while others would permanently fuse into the females. The males that stayed attached became permanent organs for sperm production.

“We found that a cascade of traits, including those required for sexual parasitism, allowed anglerfishes to invade the deep sea,” Chase D. Brownstein , a graduate student in the ecology and evolutionary biology department at Yale who was the study’s lead author, said in a news release.

Today, there are more than 300 species of anglerfish, which makes them the most varied family of vertebrates in the ocean’s lightless zone. The region starts about 1,000 feet down — just beneath the photic zone, which gets enough sunlight to support photosynthesis and most of the sea’s plants — and descends for miles. The team’s study was published last week in the journal Current Biology.

Finding a mate in the deep sea can be extremely difficult because of the environment’s incomprehensibly vast size. By some estimates, the dark zone amounts to more than 97 percent of the planetary space inhabited by living things, mainly because the ocean plunges to a maximum depth of nearly seven miles. In contrast, land habitats make up less than 1 percent of the planet’s biosphere because the band of life is so narrow, making its volume quite small.
