Vietnam has emerged as a hotspot for educators seeking to teach at an international school . This Southeast Asian nation offers a unique blend of rich cultural heritage, scenic landscapes, and bustling cities. With an ever-growing number of international schools, Vietnam presents a plethora of opportunities to educators around the globe. Whether you're a seasoned teacher or a fresh graduate, this guide will help you navigate the process of landing a teaching job in this vibrant country.

Medical clearance, obtained within Vietnam

Professional teaching certification (e.g., BEd, PGDE, PGCE)

A minimum of 2-3 years of teaching experience at the grade level you plan to teach

Two positive teaching references

Age under 65 years

All necessary documents must be authenticated and legalized for the work permit and residency application. Fluent non-native English speakers may be considered if there's a shortage of native speakers.

2. Compensation and Benefits for International School Teachers

The monthly salary for international school teachers in Vietnam ranges from $2000 - $4900 (2023), contingent on experience and students' age. The compensation package typically includes:

Housing or housing allowance

A standard workweek of 25-28 hours with two days off

Paid holidays and vacation time

Flight reimbursement

School fee discounts for your children

Possible performance bonuses.

3. Understanding the International School Landscape in Vietnam

Vietnam has seen a surge in the number of international schools, primarily concentrated in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. These schools cater to both local children and expatriates' kids.

Schools usually operate from 07:30 to 16:30, Monday to Friday, with some offering after-school extracurricular activities. The student population can be quite diverse, with some schools hosting up to 50 different nationalities.

International schools in Vietnam offer various curricula, including American , British , Australian , and International Baccalaureate .

4. A Day in the Life of an International School Teacher in Vietnam

On a typical day, teachers and students gather for an assembly between 7:00 and 7:30 am. The teacher's schedule usually involves a mix of teaching and planning, with the latter including lesson planning and grading.

After the academic day concludes, teachers often run clubs or supervise extra-curricular activities. Keeping accurate records of attendance, homework, and assessments is a crucial part of the job.

Communication with parents is typically more frequent and involved in international schools, given the fee-paying nature of these institutions and the parents' expectation for a superior education.

5. Student Demographics and Learning Styles

International schools in Vietnam attract a diverse mix of students, including local Vietnamese children and expatriates' kids. Class sizes can vary, but you may find yourself teaching a class of around 22 students hailing from 12-14 different countries.

It's important to be mindful of the different learning styles represented in your classroom. For instance, students from South Korea, China, and Taiwan may prefer to learn through memorization.

6. Preferred Teacher Nationalities in Vietnam

Vietnam's international schools hire teachers from various nationalities, often in line with the curriculum they offer. For instance, US and Canadian teachers are in demand at American curriculum schools, while British and Irish teachers are sought after at UK curriculum schools.

7. Application Process for Teaching Positions in Vietnam

The primary hiring season for jobs starting in August is the previous November/December, approximately 8 months prior. Job vacancies may also arise in January due to staff changes or school expansion.

Schools may also re-advertise unfilled positions during the term. Early application is therefore recommended.

8. Key Qualities Sought in Potential Teachers

Schools in Vietnam look for various attributes in potential teachers, including:

Experience with the specific curriculum taught at the school

Excellent subject knowledge

Effective communication skills

Professional appearance and demeanor

A wealth of ideas for engaging lessons

Approachability and teamwork skills

A commitment to continuous professional development

A positive attitude and willingness to contribute to the school community

A long-term commitment to the school or school group

Excellence in classroom teaching

9. Teaching English in Vietnam

English language teaching positions are available in cities and larger towns throughout Vietnam, with salaries ranging from $1000 to $2300 per month. English language teachers in Vietnam typically need to satisfy the following requirements:

English language teacher requirements 2023:

Native English speaker with TEFL/CELTA certificate and bachelor degree, clear criminal record check, and ability to pass a medical examination in Vietnam. Some schools may also require 3 years of teaching experience for a Vietnam work permit.

Before making the move, secure medical insurance and ensure you have sufficient funds to cover initial expenses such as document processing, flights, housing deposits, and living costs for the first few weeks.

10. Living in Vietnam as an International School Teacher

Living in Vietnam offers a different lifestyle compared to countries like the US, Canada, Ireland, Australia, and the UK. The cost of living is significantly lower, allowing teachers to save a substantial portion of their salary. The climate is generally mild or hot, with no snow or ice in the winter season. Navigating Vietnam is made easy with various transportation options, including public buses, trains, bicycles, taxis, Grab, motorbikes, cars, and airplanes. For those interested in driving, temporary driver's licenses are available upon application.

Lastly, Vietnam is famous for its breathtaking beaches, providing a perfect weekend getaway. From the scenic Tuan Chau and Do Son beaches near Hanoi to the bustling areas of Nha Trang and Vung Tau, there's a beach for every preference.

To teach at an international school in Vietnam is not just an employment opportunity, but a chance to immerse yourself in a new culture and contribute to the global community. With careful planning and preparation, you can make the most of this rewarding adventure.

Great people and great energy

All the other jobs that I’ve had in Vietnam have been just get in, teach and leave, I didn’t even know any of my co-workers’ names, whilst here it’s the exact opposite. I’ve grown a lot since I started working here. There are so many people to chat with, to get help from and you’re never alone. You’re just surrounded by great people and great energy.

I get to work with such a diversity of culture.

I get to work with such a diversity of culture. We all come together and we’re able to work together well as a team. I also love the fact that I work in different public schools so I get to meet with different children. I find it really fun when I come up with new ideas for the students to help them participate and learn in lessons. It’s wonderful to see the smiles on their faces when they’re having fun and they’re also learning in a positive environment.

It’s a very friendly environment. We work with a lot of really fun students who are very energetic and ready to learn. Also it’s very relaxed, and there are tons of room for personal growth in the company. We do so many activities throughout the year. We’ll do labs with students. It’s really a good environment to see the kids explore certain science concepts.

Among my favourite moments here is about the activities we did in the office during the summer. It’s a break from teaching. This year, our manager organized lots of activities for us to do. The Olympics, every Tuesdays and Fridays we have different sports, different activities such as quizzes, water balloon throwing, food tasting. I get to do lots of STEM projects with my students, especially after their exam. My students enjoyed it a lot.

Everyone helps.

EMG is a very friendly place to work because even if there are old or new colleagues, everyone helps. Everyone helps me and now I get a chance to help other new ones. Another good thing is the support from Scheduling, from Management, from HR even. They always help us if we have any issues or problems and very easy to talk to. There are always fun characters in the classes I teach as well. Boys and girls will make me laugh unexpectedly, and they will surprise you with their smartness and their ideas.

A very positive experience.

Teaching English at public schools is a very positive experience. It gives you a chance to reach the students and teach them an international education that they would normally get from international schools, and you’re giving it to students in a more general school setting. It’s a different education for students, it’s a different experience and that will be useful for their Vietnamese classes; and that will really make it enjoyable, that what makes it so worthwhile.

Teach English in Vietnam

Vietnam is a cultural hub, with beautiful mountains and remarkable rice-paddies

Why teach abroad in Vietnam?

Teaching in Vietnam allows you to immerse yourself in the country’s rich history and diverse culture. Plus, you can cross it off of your travel bucket list after living there for a year or more and getting to experience some of the most stunning natural landscapes in Southeast Asia.

Vietnam is a great teaching destination for both experienced and brand new teachers. There are opportunities around every corner for foreign teachers in Vietnam, in both public and private schools. Learning English is an important factor that helps determine whether or not a family will rise above the poverty line in Vietnam, so native English speaking teachers are constantly in high demand.

Another perk of teaching in Vietnam is the location. Vietnam is located just south of China and is also bordered by Cambodia, Laos, and the South China Sea. Thailand is also just a short trip away if you want to explore any surrounding countries.

The tropical feel of Vietnam is one of the characteristics that foreign teachers and travelers can’t wait to experience. Many aspiring world travelers go to Vietnam to visit the beautiful mountains, beaches, and temples.

This varies by lifestyle and city that you choose to live in.

Growth of the education sector

In Vietnam, the Ministry of Education and Training handles the entire public and private education system. There are five levels –  preschool, primary school, secondary school, high school, and higher  education. Vietnam recognizes that education is a national priority, though many children in remote areas still do not have access to high-quality lower education.

Overall, Vietnam has high primary school completion rates, strong gender parity, low student/teacher ratios, and a low out of school rate. The standard of schools across Vietnam varies greatly, but strides have been made in the last 20 years to increase access to education as well as increase the quality of the education received.

Curriculums used in Vietnam

The four main curriculums used in Thailand are IB, U.S./AP, local, and the National Curriculum for England. If you have experience teaching any of these, you’ll have plenty of teaching options in Vietnam. Even if you don’t have experience with these, you’ll be able to find a great position in Vietnam!

There are many schools in Vietnam that offer AP courses to students. To be able to offer AP courses, a school must submit its curriculum to the AP program to ensure that the proper standards are being met. Teachers must prepare their students for the AP exams that usually take place within the first two weeks of May.

Teaching the local curriculum in Vietnam

Education in Vietnam is a state-run system of public and private education run by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET). Vietnam is known for its ever-evolving education system and rigorous curriculum. Plus, Vietnam has a reputation for being competitive for students at the secondary level. Vietnam’s local curriculum includes subjects such as Vietnamese language & literature, science, mathematics, nature and society, arts (music & fine arts), physical education, technology, and foreign language. The main education goal in Vietnam is to improve the population’s general knowledge, training quality human resources, and nurturing and fostering talent.

Teaching the National Curriculum for England in Vietnam

The National Curriculum for England is the set of standards used to through England & Wales to ensure that all children are learning the same things as they move through schooling. The curriculum is set out in 4 required key stages for students ages 5 – 16. With an optional key stage 5 for ages 17 & 18 (years/grades 12 & 13). Students attending international schools almost always include key stage 5, also known as college, in the British sense of the word.

The curriculum defines the fundamental aspects of learning including the subjects to be taught, the knowledge, skills, and development with each subject. The level of ability students are expected to achieve in the subject, and lastly how students will be assessed. With that framework, schools are free to plan and organize lessons as they see fit.

Accreditation for the National Curriculum for England comes directly from the UK Department of Education and includes a scheme for overseas schools, called BSO’s (British Schools Overseas) to verify they meet the standards of UK schools.

Why consider teaching in Vietnam?

Just like anywhere else in the world, students’ temperaments and attitudes will vary vastly. That being said, you’ll work with some great students that are interested in learning, and you’ll quickly figure out which activities and lessons keep their attention and spark engagement. Education is highly valued in Vietnam, and learning English is an important part of the education system. Teachers are typically respected and valued by both parents and students.

However, the education system in Vietnam is often disorganized and very ‘go with the flow’. That being said, it might be difficult for a teacher that likes to keep to a strict schedule to deal with this organized chaos, as many people like to call it.

Where in Vietnam can I teach?

There are many cities across Vietnam, with teaching jobs available to foreigners. Some of the most popular cities people choose to teach in are Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Halong City, Hue, and Can Tho.

  • Ho Chi Minh City
  • Halong City

Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam, and it sits right beside the Red River. It’s a hugely popular teaching destination for foreigners due to its traditional culture, beautiful architecture, and historical sites. Hanoi has a population of almost 8 million people, and you’ll find many international restaurants and museums there.

There are many schools in Hanoi, so the opportunities for foreign teachers there are numerous.

Ho Chi Minh City (previously known as Saigon) has a population of about 8.4 million making it the most populous city in Vietnam. The Saigon River runs through the city, and you’ll find a lot of history and extraordinary architecture there. Expats love visiting and moving to Ho Chi Minh City, and international businesses have been setting up shop there for years.

As for teaching English in HCMC, there are tons of options, as the city is densely populated, and foreign teachers are always needed. There will be room for growth and opportunities to make more money in HCMC.

However, there are a lot of people living in a relatively small area, so the city is fairly congested and pollution can be an issue.

Hai Phong is located in Northern Vietnam, and it’s the third most populous city in Vietnam. Hai Phong is known as ‘The City of Flame Flowers’ due to the blossoming flame trees that line many of the streets. While wandering around the city, you’ll find many temples, mausoleums, and shrines to explore.

Although Hai Phong is a growing city, there are fewer foreigners living there, so you’ll need to make friends with locals to get the full Vietnam experience. There are also a number of reputable schools located here, meaning there are a lot of job options for teachers. When you’re not teaching, you can take a quick trip over to Halong Bay for the weekend, as Hai Phong is within close proximity to it!

If you’re sold on being closer to Halong Bay, then you should consider teaching English in Halong City! The bay is one of the most recognizable places in Vietnam, and it attracts many foreigners every year. You’re going to find smaller, local shops in Halong City, and teaching here will give you a more authenticate experience of Vietnam.

There are plenty of ESL teaching jobs available here, but be prepared for life in a smaller foreign city. Also keep in mind that if you need a break from life, you can easily head over to the bay to go hiking, rock climbing, or scuba diving.

If you’re a history buff or even a wannabe history buff, then you’ll love teaching in Hue. This ancient city has a lot to offer, including but not limited to the Imperial City and surrounding sights, the Perfume River, and the Thien Mu Pagoda. There’s a lot to discover in Hue, and you can ride your bicycle around to most of the attractions.

Teachers and travelers both end up in Hue for various reasons, and most of them love it! There are various opportunities for teachers in Hue, but they might be few and far between.

Once you get a taste of the Cai Rang Floating Market, you’ll never want to go back to the old way of life. If you’re looking for a more relaxed way of life, then Can Tho is a teaching destination that you should add to your list. Enjoy the plentiful fresh food that’s found throughout Can Tho, as well as the various Hot Pot restaurants scattered throughout the city.

Though teaching jobs don’t grow on trees here, there are still plenty of opportunities for foreign teachers.

Hanoi marked on Vietnam map

Types of schools in Vietnam

Foreign teachers have tons of teaching options in Vietnam. You can teach at any type of school such as training centers, preschools, kindergartens, international schools, public schools, and universities. No matter what kind of school you have experience in or what kind of school you want to start teaching at, you’ll have a plethora of options in Vietnam.

  • Training centers
  • Preschools/kindergartens
  • International schools
  • Public schools
  • Universities

Training centers in Vietnam

Many foreign English teachers in Vietnam teach at training centers. These schools are attended by kids or adults in the evenings and weekends specifically for English language instruction.

Positions at training centers are often easiest to secure as there is a high demand for these classes, and they hire year-round. Each center has its own specialized curriculum, as well as teaching and training materials which means planning and preparation time are minimized.

Required teaching experience

Schedule & hours, preschools and kindergartens in vietnam.

The name says it all, the children in these institutions are 18 months to 6 years old. Teaching English in a kindergarten or preschool is a very common job in Vietnam.

Teachers can expect a friendly working environment and a teaching assistant in the classroom with them. There will be plenty of fun teaching materials available and little time is needed for preparation. Classes typically have 8-20 young learners and are between 20-40 minutes long.

International schools in Vietnam

These schools are where professional expats and wealthy locals send their children. Tuition for the students is high and enrollment is very competitive. This means that teacher remuneration is fantastic (especially if you have children) but these jobs will often require a teaching license and graduate degree.

Classes are held on the traditional two-semester schedule and almost all classes are taught in English. These schools often require a 2-year commitment from the teachers. Most International Schools will follow either the International Baccalaureate (IB) or the foreign (A-level/AP etc.) curriculum, so teachers with experience and familiarity with these curricula are preferred.

Public schools in Vietnam

Public schools (particularly in bigger cities) score well on all fronts. Decent salary & benefits, reasonable teaching load, and more paid vacation days. Your students will be diligent, well-behaved, and smart but you will sometimes have up to 60 of them in your classroom! Jobs in this category will sometimes require a graduate degree and/or a teaching license.

Universities in Vietnam

There is a lot of variety within these jobs. Positions at smaller universities usually hire foreign teachers to teach required English classes, some universities are less selective when it comes to hiring foreign teachers. Even if the university originally hired you to teach a specific subject, entry-level teachers will rarely be teaching anything other than oral English. Salaries are usually between 1,700-2,000 USD/ month (dependent on location and experience), but teachers are paid during the summer and winter breaks and never have to teach more than 20 periods a week. Jobs at universities are therefore more competitive than English training centers. The university curriculum is flexible and the foreign teacher is responsible for creating teaching materials.

High-ranking public universities, especially in big cities, are a different story. Salary and benefits will be much higher but you may be expected to possess an advanced degree and considerable relevant teaching experience.

Schedule and start dates

Fall starts in September

Spring starts in January

K-12 schools work on a similar schedule as western countries with the fall semester starting in late August and the spring semester starting around January. For fall positions, we suggest applying 4-5 months in advance and 2-3 months in advance for spring. In addition, Vietnam has options in training schools, which hire new teachers every month! No matter your schedule, we’ll be able to help find the best teaching opportunities available.

Salary and benefits while teaching English in Vietnam

There are many different types of schools to choose to work at in Vietnam, so you’ll want to do a little research on each one to figure out which type will best suit your lifestyle, salary, and time-off needs. There are often trade-offs that you will need to consider with each type of school. For example, if you want a higher salary, you’ll need to work more hours, so maybe you should consider an international school. However, if you want more time off, you may want to work at a university where you’ll have less working hours and a lower salary.

Here’s how experience & qualifications can affect your earning potential:

Bachelor’s degree:.

A bachelor’s degree is the minimum requirement for teachers in Vietnam. Holding a 4-year degree should set your starting salary at no less than 1,000 USD/month.

TEFL/TESOL Certification or 1-year teaching experience:

While not required for all schools in Vietnam, a TEFL certification is the minimum requirement for Teaching Nomad. In addition to online TEFL courses, a very popular option in Vietnam is to complete your course in-person! Programs include teaching practice and guaranteed job placement.

Teaching license and/or degree in education:

If you are licensed to teach in your own country, then you will qualify for high-end international and English medium schools. Salaries typically start at 1,700 USD and can go up to 3,400 USD a month or more. Considering the extremely low cost of living in Vietnam, your saving potential is excellent.

Post-graduate degree:

An M.Ed or PGCE will definitely open doors for you at the higher-end English medium schools. Generally, you will move up one level on the salary scale and be more likely considered for leadership positions. You may even want to consider gaining this qualification while abroad.

The pay and living expenses are generally much higher in bigger cities around Vietnam. In bigger cities, you will have greater access to some more western amenities than you may find in smaller cities but bear in mind that cities like Ho Chi Minh can be hectic and overwhelming. Many teachers find comfort in the slower pace of life in smaller cities. You can expect a lower cost of living in smaller cities and a quieter lifestyle. Location is a personal choice so be sure to do research before hopping on the plane!!

Similarly, to your teaching background & qualifications, the number of hours you work will affect your salary. Training schools generally require you to teach 20 hours, and typically pay between 1,000-1,800 USD. At kindergartens and preschools, you can expect a similar number of teaching hours. Though the teaching hours at public and international schools are not much different, they require more class preparation time and are stricter on office hours.

Many schools provide teachers with housing and reimburse for airfare. As a legal worker in Vietnam, your school will most likely provide health insurance as either a full benefit or a 50/50 split between teacher and employer.

What our teachers are saying

I’d highly recommend Teaching nomad because it is a reputable, international agency that has teaching opportunities all over the world. Their website is easy to use, the consultants are attentive and help you throughout the process. I’d choose them all over again.

I was helped by Moira, and the support provided to me was second to none. I’m super grateful for the support. Finding a job during this difficult period would  have been a challenge on my own, however, the assistance from Teaching Nomad made the process much easier. They also offered continuous support once I started working. They have been absolutely fantastic.

TN helped me from the very start, which for me was trying to decide which TEFL certification to go with. From there my consultant, Moira, helped me with the documents I needed, gave me resume tips, sent off my profile to various schools even before my certification was complete, and gave me interview tips when the schools wanted to meet me. Thanks to the help Moira and Teaching Nomad provided, I have just signed a contract with a higher than normal salary for a first-time teacher. Now they are helping me out with authenticating my documents and my application for a visa!

You will need to demonstrate your experience to get the job, as IELTS is a particular skillset that requires knowledge of the test. Once you know the test well, the job becomes more accessible and requires less lesson preparation.

Although the test prep can be difficult at first, with the proper preparation and knowledge of the test, you can be successful in your teaching job in Vietnam. With the potential to earn up to $30 an hour, teaching IELTS in Vietnam can be a great way to gain experience and make money.

Teaching IELTS in Vietnam can be a great way to get a high salary and gain experience in the field.

Specialist Language Centers

Discovering the unique language centers of Vietnam can be an exhilarating experience, offering exciting opportunities to expand your knowledge and skills.

Two of the most popular language centers in Vietnam are Wall Street English and Yola, which specialize in adult English classes. Wall Street English focuses on providing English language training to adults in the workplace, while Yola offers courses designed for adult learners who wish to enhance their English language skills.

Both centers offer a range of ESL jobs in Vietnam, from teaching English to adults in the workplace to teaching English to adult learners in more casual settings.

The ESL jobs in Vietnam offered by these specialist language centers are varied and can provide a unique experience for those looking for a teaching job there.

ESL jobs in Vietnam at Wall Street English include teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL), teaching English for international communication (TEIC) and teaching English for business (TEB).

Yola, on the other hand, offers courses for both adult learners and business English students, with a focus on creating an enjoyable learning experience for students.

Public School English Teaching Jobs in Vietnam

If you’re looking for a teaching job in Vietnam, there are two main options: teaching through a provider or working directly with schools.

Teaching through a provider is an excellent option if you’re looking for a more structured environment with plenty of support to help you get up and running quickly.

Working directly with schools, on the other hand, can be more rewarding and will allow you to build meaningful relationships with the students and staff.

Whichever option you choose, you’ll be sure to have an exciting and rewarding experience teaching in Vietnam.

Teaching through a Provider

Teaching at public schools in Vietnam through a provider gives you the flexibility to build strong relationships with your students and the opportunity to use the knowledge from your degree.

Rather than working at just one school, you’ll report to the provider’s headquarters first thing in the morning. From there, you may work at two to three different schools throughout the day. Transport via minivan or taxi is provided.

Many providers offer a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) program, which teaches English through specific subjects like science and maths. This type of teaching is more satisfying than straight ESL, as it allows you to use your degree knowledge and challenge yourself.

Additionally, the amount of lesson prep required by the teacher varies greatly; some providers provide structured curriculums with minimal additional prep needed, while others only provide topics and outlines that require extra content. Conditions can also vary, with large class sizes (sometimes up to 50 students) and varied tech supplies, air conditioning, etc.

Teaching through a provider typically pays hourly, with the standard range for public school positions ranging from $17 to $25.

Working Directly with Schools

Working directly with schools in Vietnam can be a tricky endeavor, especially for those who aren’t familiar with the language or culture.

Negotiating with head teachers can be difficult as there is a language barrier.

Schedules consist of 45-minute lessons with 15 minutes of break in between, but the teacher only gets paid for the 45 minutes.

Split shifts, where the teacher works two parts of the day, are common. This route is usually taken by older teachers who want to work less and have the school close to home.

You’ll also need to sort out all your own travel. Most teachers have their own motorcycles.

International school teaching jobs typically offer competitive pay, benefits, and the chance to work with a diverse group of students. With the right qualifications, you’ll be able to find an international school position that’s perfect for you.

Teaching English or Another Subject in International Schools in Vietnam

You can experience the unique opportunity of teaching English or another subject in international schools in Vietnam and gain access to the latest technology and resources while networking with the global education industry.

If you are qualified in your home country and have a few years of experience, you can teach a subject at a university in Vietnam. This could include teaching GCSE English or working on the IB program.

Working in an international school in Vietnam is a great way to learn about the culture and the people while gaining valuable teaching experience. You will be able to broaden your horizon, gain an understanding of different cultures, and have the opportunity to travel and explore the country.

Additionally, you can develop your teaching skills and make a positive impact on the lives of students.

Kindergarten English Teaching Jobs in Vietnam

Teaching English in Vietnam’s kindergarten classrooms can be a rewarding experience! Many of these kindergarten positions are at private schools that follow a Montessori style, which usually prefers teachers with previous experience teaching Montessori.

However, there are also positions available at other types of schools, similar to public school jobs in terms of conditions, prep, and salary. It is also relatively common for language center teachers to teach mornings at kindergarten alongside their evening classes.

Kindergarten jobs in Vietnam can provide an excellent opportunity for teachers to get to know their students and create an immersive learning environment. The Montessori teaching style is especially conducive to fostering a positive learning atmosphere for young learners. In addition, the smaller class sizes mean that the teacher can provide more individualized attention to each student.

Teaching English in Vietnam’s kindergartens can be an enriching experience, both for the teacher and their students. Not only will the teacher have the chance to form strong relationships with their students, but they will also be able to help them develop the skills they need to succeed. It can be a great way to make a difference in the lives of young learners.

Private Tutoring English in Vietnam

If you’re looking for a flexible way to make some extra money in Vietnam, teaching private English lessons might be the perfect option!

With private English lessons, you can work around your schedule and choose your students, set your own rates, and negotiate payment terms.

You’ll also get the chance to provide personalized attention and feedback to your students and to network with other teachers.

However, teaching private English lessons does have its drawbacks. You won’t have job security or benefits like health insurance or paid time off, and you may not know much about your students’ English proficiency levels or prior learning experiences.

You’ll also have to spend time and resources on marketing and administrative tasks.

But if you’re willing to take the risk, teaching private English lessons in Vietnam can be an enriching experience.

University Jobs Teaching English in Vietnam

If you’re looking for a different teaching job in Vietnam, why not consider working at a university? Unlike private tutoring, university jobs offer a more structured environment with regular hours. You’ll also get to work with a larger group of students, and you can expect to earn higher wages – up to $30 or more!

Here are three great aspects of teaching at a university in Vietnam:

  • Good salary : You’ll be paid well for your efforts with wages of up to $30 or more.
  • Reliable hours : You’ll have regular hours and won’t have to work on weekends or evenings.
  • Engaged students : The students are usually engaged and happy to learn, and the bad students rarely show up.

University teaching is a great way to earn a good salary and gain valuable experience in a structured environment, all while helping people gain valuable skills. I taught at a couple of different universities. While I thoroughly enjoyed my time teaching the students, you are basically left on your own by the management. Scheduling, mid-tests, final tests, and other types of admin were all left down to me to manage. If you’re self-motivated you’ll relish this, but it’s certainly not ideal for beginners/

Aspiring teachers looking to work in Vietnam should be aware that there are essential requirements that must be met in order to be legally employed. International travel documents for children

See what documents a child needs to travel to or from the U.S. alone or with a parent or relative.

Children traveling to the U.S.

All children, including infants, must have their own travel documents such as a passport or document from a Trusted Traveler Program to enter the U.S. If you travel or are going to travel with a child, consider taking the following documents:

  • If the child is traveling with only one of their custodial parents, they must have a letter of consent, preferably in English and notarized, from the other parent or signed by both parents. The letter should say "I acknowledge that my son/daughter is traveling outside the country with [the name of the adult] with my permission."
  • If one parent has sole custody of the child, a copy of the custody document can take the place of the other parent's letter.
  • Parents who frequently cross the border by land with a minor must always carry a letter of permission from the other parent.

U.S. citizen children traveling abroad

Ports of entry in many countries have security measures to prevent international child abduction . If you are traveling alone with your child, you may be required to present documentation proving you are the parent or legal guardian. You may also need a letter of permission from the other parent for your child to travel.

If your child travels alone, depending on the country, they may be required to present a notarized letter from both parents or their legal guardian. If a minor is traveling abroad and is not accompanied by both parents or a legal guardian, contact the embassy or consulate of the country you will be visiting and ask about entry and exit requirements for that country.

The state of AI in 2023: Generative AI’s breakout year

You have reached a page with older survey data. please see our 2024 survey results here ..

The latest annual McKinsey Global Survey  on the current state of AI confirms the explosive growth of generative AI (gen AI) tools . Less than a year after many of these tools debuted, one-third of our survey respondents say their organizations are using gen AI regularly in at least one business function. Amid recent advances, AI has risen from a topic relegated to tech employees to a focus of company leaders: nearly one-quarter of surveyed C-suite executives say they are personally using gen AI tools for work, and more than one-quarter of respondents from companies using AI say gen AI is already on their boards’ agendas. What’s more, 40 percent of respondents say their organizations will increase their investment in AI overall because of advances in gen AI. The findings show that these are still early days for managing gen AI–related risks, with less than half of respondents saying their organizations are mitigating even the risk they consider most relevant: inaccuracy.

The organizations that have already embedded AI capabilities have been the first to explore gen AI’s potential, and those seeing the most value from more traditional AI capabilities—a group we call AI high performers—are already outpacing others in their adoption of gen AI tools. 1 We define AI high performers as organizations that, according to respondents, attribute at least 20 percent of their EBIT to AI adoption.

The expected business disruption from gen AI is significant, and respondents predict meaningful changes to their workforces. They anticipate workforce cuts in certain areas and large reskilling efforts to address shifting talent needs. Yet while the use of gen AI might spur the adoption of other AI tools, we see few meaningful increases in organizations’ adoption of these technologies. The percent of organizations adopting any AI tools has held steady since 2022, and adoption remains concentrated within a small number of business functions.

Table of Contents

  • It’s early days still, but use of gen AI is already widespread
  • Leading companies are already ahead with gen AI
  • AI-related talent needs shift, and AI’s workforce effects are expected to be substantial
  • With all eyes on gen AI, AI adoption and impact remain steady

About the research

1. it’s early days still, but use of gen ai is already widespread.

The findings from the survey—which was in the field in mid-April 2023—show that, despite gen AI’s nascent public availability, experimentation with the tools  is already relatively common, and respondents expect the new capabilities to transform their industries. Gen AI has captured interest across the business population: individuals across regions, industries, and seniority levels are using gen AI for work and outside of work. Seventy-nine percent of all respondents say they’ve had at least some exposure to gen AI, either for work or outside of work, and 22 percent say they are regularly using it in their own work. While reported use is quite similar across seniority levels, it is highest among respondents working in the technology sector and those in North America.

Organizations, too, are now commonly using gen AI. One-third of all respondents say their organizations are already regularly using generative AI in at least one function—meaning that 60 percent of organizations with reported AI adoption are using gen AI. What’s more, 40 percent of those reporting AI adoption at their organizations say their companies expect to invest more in AI overall thanks to generative AI, and 28 percent say generative AI use is already on their board’s agenda. The most commonly reported business functions using these newer tools are the same as those in which AI use is most common overall: marketing and sales, product and service development, and service operations, such as customer care and back-office support. This suggests that organizations are pursuing these new tools where the most value is. In our previous research , these three areas, along with software engineering, showed the potential to deliver about 75 percent of the total annual value from generative AI use cases.

In these early days, expectations for gen AI’s impact are high : three-quarters of all respondents expect gen AI to cause significant or disruptive change in the nature of their industry’s competition in the next three years. Survey respondents working in the technology and financial-services industries are the most likely to expect disruptive change from gen AI. Our previous research shows  that, while all industries are indeed likely to see some degree of disruption, the level of impact is likely to vary. 2 “ The economic potential of generative AI: The next productivity frontier ,” McKinsey, June 14, 2023. Industries relying most heavily on knowledge work are likely to see more disruption—and potentially reap more value. While our estimates suggest that tech companies, unsurprisingly, are poised to see the highest impact from gen AI—adding value equivalent to as much as 9 percent of global industry revenue—knowledge-based industries such as banking (up to 5 percent), pharmaceuticals and medical products (also up to 5 percent), and education (up to 4 percent) could experience significant effects as well. By contrast, manufacturing-based industries, such as aerospace, automotives, and advanced electronics, could experience less disruptive effects. This stands in contrast to the impact of previous technology waves that affected manufacturing the most and is due to gen AI’s strengths in language-based activities, as opposed to those requiring physical labor.

Responses show many organizations not yet addressing potential risks from gen AI

According to the survey, few companies seem fully prepared for the widespread use of gen AI—or the business risks these tools may bring. Just 21 percent of respondents reporting AI adoption say their organizations have established policies governing employees’ use of gen AI technologies in their work. And when we asked specifically about the risks of adopting gen AI, few respondents say their companies are mitigating the most commonly cited risk with gen AI: inaccuracy. Respondents cite inaccuracy more frequently than both cybersecurity and regulatory compliance, which were the most common risks from AI overall in previous surveys. Just 32 percent say they’re mitigating inaccuracy, a smaller percentage than the 38 percent who say they mitigate cybersecurity risks. Interestingly, this figure is significantly lower than the percentage of respondents who reported mitigating AI-related cybersecurity last year (51 percent). Overall, much as we’ve seen in previous years, most respondents say their organizations are not addressing AI-related risks.

2. Leading companies are already ahead with gen AI

The survey results show that AI high performers—that is, organizations where respondents say at least 20 percent of EBIT in 2022 was attributable to AI use—are going all in on artificial intelligence, both with gen AI and more traditional AI capabilities. These organizations that achieve significant value from AI are already using gen AI in more business functions than other organizations do, especially in product and service development and risk and supply chain management. When looking at all AI capabilities—including more traditional machine learning capabilities, robotic process automation, and chatbots—AI high performers also are much more likely than others to use AI in product and service development, for uses such as product-development-cycle optimization, adding new features to existing products, and creating new AI-based products. These organizations also are using AI more often than other organizations in risk modeling and for uses within HR such as performance management and organization design and workforce deployment optimization.

AI high performers are much more likely than others to use AI in product and service development.

Another difference from their peers: high performers’ gen AI efforts are less oriented toward cost reduction, which is a top priority at other organizations. Respondents from AI high performers are twice as likely as others to say their organizations’ top objective for gen AI is to create entirely new businesses or sources of revenue—and they’re most likely to cite the increase in the value of existing offerings through new AI-based features.

As we’ve seen in previous years , these high-performing organizations invest much more than others in AI: respondents from AI high performers are more than five times more likely than others to say they spend more than 20 percent of their digital budgets on AI. They also use AI capabilities more broadly throughout the organization. Respondents from high performers are much more likely than others to say that their organizations have adopted AI in four or more business functions and that they have embedded a higher number of AI capabilities. For example, respondents from high performers more often report embedding knowledge graphs in at least one product or business function process, in addition to gen AI and related natural-language capabilities.

While AI high performers are not immune to the challenges of capturing value from AI, the results suggest that the difficulties they face reflect their relative AI maturity, while others struggle with the more foundational, strategic elements of AI adoption. Respondents at AI high performers most often point to models and tools, such as monitoring model performance in production and retraining models as needed over time, as their top challenge. By comparison, other respondents cite strategy issues, such as setting a clearly defined AI vision that is linked with business value or finding sufficient resources.

The findings offer further evidence that even high performers haven’t mastered best practices regarding AI adoption, such as machine-learning-operations (MLOps) approaches, though they are much more likely than others to do so. For example, just 35 percent of respondents at AI high performers report that where possible, their organizations assemble existing components, rather than reinvent them, but that’s a much larger share than the 19 percent of respondents from other organizations who report that practice.

Many specialized MLOps technologies and practices  may be needed to adopt some of the more transformative uses cases that gen AI applications can deliver—and do so as safely as possible. Live-model operations is one such area, where monitoring systems and setting up instant alerts to enable rapid issue resolution can keep gen AI systems in check. High performers stand out in this respect but have room to grow: one-quarter of respondents from these organizations say their entire system is monitored and equipped with instant alerts, compared with just 12 percent of other respondents.

3. AI-related talent needs shift, and AI’s workforce effects are expected to be substantial

Our latest survey results show changes in the roles that organizations are filling to support their AI ambitions. In the past year, organizations using AI most often hired data engineers, machine learning engineers, and Al data scientists—all roles that respondents commonly reported hiring in the previous survey. But a much smaller share of respondents report hiring AI-related-software engineers—the most-hired role last year—than in the previous survey (28 percent in the latest survey, down from 39 percent). Roles in prompt engineering have recently emerged, as the need for that skill set rises alongside gen AI adoption, with 7 percent of respondents whose organizations have adopted AI reporting those hires in the past year.

The findings suggest that hiring for AI-related roles remains a challenge but has become somewhat easier over the past year, which could reflect the spate of layoffs at technology companies from late 2022 through the first half of 2023. Smaller shares of respondents than in the previous survey report difficulty hiring for roles such as AI data scientists, data engineers, and data-visualization specialists, though responses suggest that hiring machine learning engineers and AI product owners remains as much of a challenge as in the previous year.

Looking ahead to the next three years, respondents predict that the adoption of AI will reshape many roles in the workforce. Generally, they expect more employees to be reskilled than to be separated. Nearly four in ten respondents reporting AI adoption expect more than 20 percent of their companies’ workforces will be reskilled, whereas 8 percent of respondents say the size of their workforces will decrease by more than 20 percent.

Looking specifically at gen AI’s predicted impact, service operations is the only function in which most respondents expect to see a decrease in workforce size at their organizations. This finding generally aligns with what our recent research  suggests: while the emergence of gen AI increased our estimate of the percentage of worker activities that could be automated (60 to 70 percent, up from 50 percent), this doesn’t necessarily translate into the automation of an entire role.

AI high performers are expected to conduct much higher levels of reskilling than other companies are. Respondents at these organizations are over three times more likely than others to say their organizations will reskill more than 30 percent of their workforces over the next three years as a result of AI adoption.

4. With all eyes on gen AI, AI adoption and impact remain steady

While the use of gen AI tools is spreading rapidly, the survey data doesn’t show that these newer tools are propelling organizations’ overall AI adoption. The share of organizations that have adopted AI overall remains steady, at least for the moment, with 55 percent of respondents reporting that their organizations have adopted AI. Less than a third of respondents continue to say that their organizations have adopted AI in more than one business function, suggesting that AI use remains limited in scope. Product and service development and service operations continue to be the two business functions in which respondents most often report AI adoption, as was true in the previous four surveys. And overall, just 23 percent of respondents say at least 5 percent of their organizations’ EBIT last year was attributable to their use of AI—essentially flat with the previous survey—suggesting there is much more room to capture value.

Organizations continue to see returns in the business areas in which they are using AI, and they plan to increase investment in the years ahead. We see a majority of respondents reporting AI-related revenue increases within each business function using AI. And looking ahead, more than two-thirds expect their organizations to increase their AI investment over the next three years.

The online survey was in the field April 11 to 21, 2023, and garnered responses from 1,684 participants representing the full range of regions, industries, company sizes, functional specialties, and tenures. Of those respondents, 913 said their organizations had adopted AI in at least one function and were asked questions about their organizations’ AI use. To adjust for differences in response rates, the data are weighted by the contribution of each respondent’s nation to global GDP.

The survey content and analysis were developed by Michael Chui , a partner at the McKinsey Global Institute and a partner in McKinsey’s Bay Area office, where Lareina Yee is a senior partner; Bryce Hall , an associate partner in the Washington, DC, office; and senior partners Alex Singla and Alexander Sukharevsky , global leaders of QuantumBlack, AI by McKinsey, based in the Chicago and London offices, respectively.
