A small collection of PNG literature

At times when I need to think deeply about something that is important to me, it is with profound gratitude that I find the wisdom I need from others, from those who are with me or who have gone before me and left their mark in the world through their writing. I hope the same opportunity for my fellow writers, poets and thinkers.

This enlightening event for me is even more satisfying when the writing is that of a fellow Papua Niuginian.

So it is with a healthy serving of humility and respect that I concede the principal grounds of argument for my cause, PNG authors for PNG readers, to Mr. Daniel Kumbon.

Daniel writes that:

“Literature has the ability to provide knowledge and improve the quality of education in a country like ours, where poor literacy rates remain the greatest challenge for people who continue to lack proper educational facilities. People fail to realise that literature and other art forms are equally important – they are the essence that holds a nation together and gives it a unique identity. I believe that every published copy of a news article, essay or book a Papua New Guinean has written is a narrative of the history of this country that should be preserved for future generations to cherish. Literature serves as a gateway to learning and expands the knowledge of people to understand the world they live in and the wider world beyond.”

Encapsulated there in terse and energetic phrasing are four fundamental reasons for nurturing our national literature which also form the basis for the Ples Singsing “Tingting Bilong Mi” Essay Competition.

Ples Singsing “Tingting Bilong Mi” Essay Competition

The competition is hosted by Ples Singsing – Papua Niuginian Writers Blog .

This privately funded writing contest has a five-year lifespan and aims to engage with youth aged between 16 to 36 years of age who are currently enrolled in an educational institute.

The Ples Singsing Masterminds are all writers with a penchant for supporting their colleagues in their chosen creative field.

In other avenues, PNG writers have tried to garner government support for the promotion of a national literary organization.

At Ples Singsing we believe in the validity of the petition made by PNG authors to Prime Minister Marape . Promoting PNG writers means rewarding PNG readers and encouraging PNG thinkers.

We believe that supporting #PNGAuthors4PNGReaders is a practical way to #TakeBackPNG because we will be giving back to PNG those stories (fiction and non-fiction) which already belong to us and which encompass who we are and what we value in our society.

But it is equally important that PNG writers and published authors understand the thoughts and opinions of their PNG readers. This means we need to hear different opinions and gather more suggestions about the cause of our petition.

We want to read essays from our youth, students in secondary schools, technical, vocational and teachers colleges, and universities. We believe that hearing from you is the best way to determine the value of our cause and decide the way we want to achieve our goal.

Tell us why you think the PNG government should/should not buy PNG authored books.

The essay competition was launched on 1 December and ends on 31 January 2021. Entry is free to all Papua Niuginian citizens living in-country. Three winners will be announced at the start of the school term at a date to be set in February 2021.

Awards, judging and benefits

• All entries will be prejudged by a blind panel of six published PNG writers and final judging of the top ten will be completed by Phil Fitzpatrick (Australian author) and Fiona Hukula (PNG academic and researcher).
• Best entries will be published in the Post Courier and The National newspapers.
• Well written essays may receive minimum editing for posting on Ples Singsing and PNG Attitude blogs.
• Cash prizes are offered for: First place K500 | Second place K300 | Third place K200
• Three winners will each receive two (2) books by PNG authors (valued at K50 each).
• Selected essays will be collated into a book which will be published by JDT Independent Publishing, and the school or institute of the winning essayists will receive two copies for their library.
• Exceptional and interested writers may be offered six months of free coaching and mentoring by senior writers from PNG and abroad, from which they will be expected to produce one critical essay on a topic of their choice.
• A small award ceremony may be held at a school in Port Moresby, Lae or Goroka dependent on logistical arrangements or otherwise books will be delivered by mail.

National Youth Essay Competition preps Grade 12 students

Grade 12 students in selected schools in PNG have been given the opportunity to prepare for their National Written Expression Exams by participating in the 3 rd National Youth Essay Competition scheduled from 3 rd to 17 th May, 2021.

This BSP Sumatin Account sponsored competition is themed “Rural Entrepreneurship and Trade in Papua New Guinea,” where students are required to write an Expository Essay with a minimum of 700 words on the ‘Opportunities and Challenges' faced by Rural Entrepreneurship and Trade in their district or local area.

The BSP Financial Group Limited (BSP) is once again the sponsor of competition. “BSP is happy to be supporting an event that encourages Grade 12 students to take advantage and prepare for the National Written Expression Exams which falls in August,” said BSP Corporate Sponsorship Manager Amelia Minnopu.

“As part of our objective to encourage a ‘Savings Culture’ in PNG and especially with School aged children, BSP is proud to kick start the students’ savings, with a total prize money of K1,000 under our Sumatin Account. First prize is K500, second prize K300 and the third prize is K200 and these prize monies will be deposited into the competition winners’ BSP Sumatin Accounts, ”Minnopu added.

Managing Partner of Strategic Communications Limited Andrew Runawery said the competition started in 2019 with only three schools and grew to 17 schools in 2020 from as far as Sandaun, Manus and New Ireland Provinces.

“We are extremely thankful to BSP and its ‘Sumatin Account’ product for coming on board in 2020 and again this year with the prize of K1,000 which will be shared by the Top 3 entries,” Runawery added.

Marianville Secondary’s Talullah Baloiloi topped the inaugural year of the competition while Alma Semmy from Grace Memorial Secondary in Wau, Morobe Province, took out first prize award last year.

Mr Runawery said the papers must be sent digitally as a PDF attachment by email to [email protected] or WhatsApp 70057779.

BSP also invests K10,000 annually also under the BSP Sumatin Account  to support various Dux Awards for Primary, Secondary and Tertiary schools across the country.

The Institute for Youth in Policy International Essay Contest was launched to empower students to critically think about the issues that matter to them. Insight: Does the essay provide unique or interesting insights, analysis or perspectives on its subject matter? Impact: Is the significance or impact of the issue(s) being discussed, idea(s) being brought up, or point-of-views being communicated sufficiently captured in the essay? Clarity and organization : Is the essay easy to understand, with a clear and logical flow? Style: Is the essay engaging and well-written, with appropriate yet compelling tone, language and syntax for the subject matter?

Who can participate?

Any student, in any country, who is enrolled in an accredited high school or college/university at the time of submitting their essay is eligible to participate in the Institute for Youth in Policy International Essay Contest and compete for the prizes. Students taking academic gap years or semesters are also eligible. No current employees of the Institute for Youth in Policy, however, will be permitted to enter the contest.

Submission Guidelines

Essays can take the form of anything from an analytical research paper to a personal narrative to allegorical fiction. This means essays can be written in any citation style or with no citations at all if it is not a research-heavy paper. Word Limit: 1250 words All essays should be submitted as a .docx or a PDF document and should include your name as well as a title for your essay. Cover pages are acceptable but not necessary. Essays should be written in an easily readable font size (11 or 12 pt.) with a professional font style (Times New Roman, Arial, etc.).

Essay submissions are due by 11:59pm ET on August 31, 2024. This date is already an extension, so late submissions will not be accepted!

Results generally get released within 45 days after the initial deadline.

The monetary ($250) and publication prizes will be sent via email to winners directly.

●  The contest is organized by Winning Writers, located in MA, USA.

●  They accept stories and essays on any theme, up to 6,000 words each. This contest defines a story as any short work of fiction and an essay as any short work of nonfiction.

●  Your stories and essays must be submitted in English.

●  You may submit published or unpublished work.

Entry fee: USD 22 per entry

●  Story: First Prize is USD 3,000.

3. John Locke Institute Essay Competition 

Deadline: June 30, 2023

●  Students from any country.

●  Students aged 15 to 18 years by the competition deadline.

●  Students aged 14 years or younger by the competition deadline are eligible for the Junior prize.

●  The contest is organized by the John Locke Institute.

●  Your essay cannot exceed 2,000 words.

●  There are seven subjects or categories for essay submissions: Philosophy, Politics, Economics, History, Psychology, Theology, and Law.

Entry fee: Free to enter

●  The best overall essay winner receives an honorary John Locke Fellowship, which comes with a USD 10,000 scholarship to attend one or more summer schools or gap year courses.

●  There is also a prize for the best essay in each category. The prize for each winner of a subject category and the Junior category is a scholarship worth USD 2,000 toward the cost of a summer program.

●  Students in grades 9–12 in any of the 50 states, DC, the US territories, or if they are US citizens or lawful permanent residents attending high school overseas.

●  Students attending a public, private, or parochial school.

●  Home-schooled students.

●  Your essay should be 1,000–1,500 words.

●  High school students may focus on Pride and Prejudice only or bring in other Austen works.

●  Undergraduate and graduate students should discuss at least two Austen novels of their choice.

●  Your essay must be in MLA format and 6 to 8 pages (not including your Works Cited page).

●  Your essay must be written in English.

●  First place wins a USD 1,000 scholarship.

●  Students in Grades 3–12. If international or homeschooled, please select your grade level based on if you were attending a public school in the U.S.

●  This contest is organized by EngineerGirl.

●  Students should write a piece that shows how female or non-white engineers have contributed to or can enhance engineering’s great achievements.

●  You should choose one of the 20 Greatest Engineering Achievements of the 20th Century as a topic and explore the technologies developed in the last century and the new ones being developed today. Make sure to follow the specific guidelines for your grade level.

PNG AIR ANNOUNCES WRITE AND WIN ESSAY COMPETITION WINNER

As part of our 35th Anniversary Celebrations, PNG Air recently ran a Write and Win Essay Competition for students in Grades 9 to 12.

The competition saw numerous entries from students all over the country, who told us in 1,000 words or less ‘‘Now that International Travel is on the rebound, which province would you like Tourists to visit in PNG and why?’.

The competition sought to showcase the many destinations we fly to in Papua New Guinea and encourage domestic tourism post covid-19.

We are pleased to announce Grade 12 Social Science student, Heather Leeman from Sogeri National School of Excellence, as the winner. Congratulations!

Heather, from Enga and Southern Highlands Province, wrote her piece on Enga, and why it is a must-visit place for Tourists.

“The people of Enga are so kind and welcoming. They not only greet people and visitors by saying good morning (Yongam oh), good afternoon (Alemandio), shake hands and give a hug, they will also go to their gardens and bring sugar cane and other garden foods as a way of welcoming a visitor into their community”, Heather writes in her essay.

‘With all the negative press about Enga, I wanted to show Enga in a more positive light, and so that is what drove me to enter and write this essay’, she says at the prize presentation.

Heather received return tickets for 5 people anywhere on the PNG Air network, and two brand new laptop PC’s for her school to assist in learning. Her piece will be published in PNG Air’s In-flight Magazine, as well as on PNG Air social media.

She was joined by her family and the Deputy Principal Administration of Sogeri National School of Excellence, Mr. Norman Yangen. ‘We are very proud of Heather, who recently completed her Grade 12 exams and we wish her all the best’, he says. ‘We would also like to give her one of these new laptops, to assist her in the start of her tertiary education next year’.

PNG Air Commercial Operations Manager, Thomas Johns in congratulating the winner, also acknowledged all the entries into the competition, and encouraged students to share their provinces as must-see destinations for tourism.

2023 Human Rights Essay Contest

ISHR is pleased to announce the 2023 Human Rights Essay Contest. The contest aims to encourage and acknowledge students who have written exceptional academic papers that address issues related to human rights. Cash prizes will be awarded to two graduate students and to two undergraduate students. Why you should submit to writing contests

Submitting to poetry competitions and free writing contests in 2024 is absolutely worth your while as an aspiring author: just as your qualifications matter when you apply for a new job, a writing portfolio that boasts published works and award-winning pieces is a great way to give your writing career a boost. And not to mention the bonus of cash prizes!

That being said, we understand that taking part in writing contests can be tough for emerging writers. First, there’s the same affliction all writers face: lack of time or inspiration. Entering writing contests is a time commitment, and many people decide to forego this endeavor in order to work on their larger projects instead — like a full-length book. Second, for many writers, the chance of rejection is enough to steer them clear of writing contests. 

But we’re here to tell you that two of the great benefits of entering writing contests happen to be the same as those two reasons to avoid them.

When it comes to the time commitment: yes, you will need to expend time and effort in order to submit a quality piece of writing to competitions. That being said, having a hard deadline to meet is a great motivator for developing a solid writing routine.

Think of entering contests as a training session to become a writer who will need to meet deadlines in order to have a successful career. If there’s a contest you have your eye on, and the deadline is in one month, sit down and realistically plan how many words you’ll need to write per day in order to meet that due date — and don’t forget to also factor in the time you’ll need to edit your story!

In regards to the fear of rejection, the truth is that any writer aspiring to become a published author needs to develop relatively thick skin. If one of your goals is to have a book traditionally published, you will absolutely need to learn how to deal with rejection, as traditional book deals are notoriously hard to score. If you’re an indie author, you will need to adopt the hardy determination required to slowly build up a readership.

The good news is that there’s a fairly simple trick for learning to deal with rejection: use it as a chance to explore how you might be able to improve your writing.

In an ideal world, each rejection from a publisher or contest would come with a detailed letter, offering construction feedback and pointing out specific tips for improvement. And while this is sometimes the case, it’s the exception and not the rule.

Still, you can use the writing contests you don’t win as a chance to provide yourself with this feedback. Take a look at the winning and shortlisted stories and highlight their strong suits: do they have fully realized characters, a knack for showing instead of telling, a well-developed but subtly conveyed theme, a particularly satisfying denouement?

The idea isn’t to replicate what makes those stories tick in your own writing. But most examples of excellent writing share a number of basic craft principles. Try and see if there are ways for you to translate those stories’ strong points into your own unique writing.

Finally, there are the more obvious benefits of entering writing contests: prize and publication. Not to mention the potential to build up your readership, connect with editors, and gain exposure.

After you submit to a writing competition in 2024

It’s exciting to send a piece of writing off to a contest. However, once the initial excitement wears off, you may be left waiting for a while. Some writing contests will contact all entrants after the judging period — whether or not they’ve won. Other writing competitions will only contact the winners. 

Here are a few things to keep in mind after you submit:

Many writing competitions don’t have time to respond to each entrant with feedback on their story. However, it never hurts to ask! Feel free to politely reach out requesting feedback — but wait until after the selection period is over.

If you’ve submitted the same work to more than one writing competition or literary magazine, remember to withdraw your submission if it ends up winning elsewhere.

After you send a submission, don’t follow it up with a rewritten or revised version. Instead, ensure that your first version is thoroughly proofread and edited. If not, wait until the next edition of the contest or submit the revised version to other writing contests.

Writing the essay

Your essay should be written in English with good grammar and structure . We will evaluate your essay based on the logic and persuasiveness of the arguments presented, the quality of the evidence used to support your points, and the originality of your ideas.

Your essay should be properly referenced , citing all sources along the way. It is recommended to use the APA (Author, Year) style of citation in the text. (For example, “The persistence of high unemployment rates is mainly associated with rigidities in the labour markets (Bertola and Rogerson, 1997).”)

Please also provide a bibliography , where you list all your sources at the end of the essay. Don’t worry too much about sticking to one citation format for this; spend your time writing your essay instead (although look to the APA format as a guide for this). Just make sure all the information needed to verify your sources is in here.

Before submitting your essay, do a word count. Words in your bibliography and in any data tables don’t count towards the limit, but everything else does, including footnotes. The limit is 1,250 words (we will check!). We put a word limit so you can focus on what the really important aspects of the question are. Because of the limit, you shouldn’t worry about providing a complete overview of the topic; rather, focus on getting a really good insight into the key aspects, with facts to back it up. You may assume that the judging panel have a basic understanding of the question topic, i.e., there is no need for lengthy definitions or background information.

Finally, some notes on style:

• Include page numbers on every page
• Format your essay in Times New Roman, size 12, with line spacing 1.5
• On the first page, include the question, question number, your name and your school .

Use of Generative AI

The use of Generative AI programmes, such as ChatGPT, is not prohibited in producing your essay, and you will not be penalised for fair usage. However, any use of AI must be declared on the form used to submit your essay. All essays will be passed through software which detects plagiarism and the use of AI, including where passages have been produced by AI and manually rewritten. Any essays found to have used AI without proper declaration will be disqualified.

We have extended the deadline for submissions to Sunday 18 th August 2024, 11:59pm BST . Late submissions will not be considered.

Before submitting, please convert your file to a PDF and change the file name to “[your name] Q[question number].pdf” . (For example, “Adam Smith Q4.pdf”). Make sure this is no larger than 10 MB in size.

Competition results will be published on the Marshall Society website by late-August 2024. Prizes are as follows:

First place: £100 Finalists: £50 Commendation: No monetary prize, awarded to excellent submissions shortlisted for finalist.

Selected winning essays will be featured in the Marshall Society’s annual publication, The Dismal Scientist .

Our 2024-25 Student Contest Calendar

Ten challenges that invite teenagers to engage, experiment, reflect and create — via writing, photography, audio, video and more.

Our annual Contest Calendar is probably the single most powerful thing we publish all year. Teachers tell us they plan their classes around our challenges, and tens of thousands of teenagers around the globe participate by creating narratives, reviews, videos, opinion pieces, podcasts, illustrations, photo essays and more.

For us, these contests are an honor and a joy to host. We love learning from young people — about what moves them and makes them mad, what intrigues and confuses and delights and defines them.

This year, we are bringing back some recent and longtime favorites, as well as introducing a few new challenges.

To begin, we have two options this fall in response to the U.S. election, though students around the globe are welcome. In September, we open with a series of special forums that invite teenagers to have thoughtful conversations about their civic and political identities, values and beliefs. Then, if they choose, they can work alone or with others to make something in response — whether in writing, video, audio or visual art. (Students can participate in one or both challenges, and we have a related invitation for educators .)

In the spring, we’re offering “My List,” a twist on our long-running review contest. This time, students can choose any collection of three to five works of art or culture to group in some way and then tell us why we should — or shouldn’t — check them out.

We’ll be posting the full rules and guidelines for each contest here when it opens. but for now you can look at the related resources we’ve provided, as well as last year’s rules, which will largely remain the same for our returning contests.
