The first sentence should have your strongest information and senior leadership skills, followed by one or two sentences to strengthen and prove the claims from the first.

5. Provide value through your accomplishments

 As we have already mentioned, listing accomplishments is a quick way to highlight your strengths. However, it’s vital that you also provide evidence to back up any claims that you make. You can do this by including numbers, such as costs saved or costs slashed, or mentioning awards, achievements, or projects you completed.

The more specific you are in your cover letter, the better your chances of success. Show the hiring manager that you’re more than just talk . Providing specific evidence of how you have performed in the past could make all the difference to your application.

Remember to use the same style as your resume so they look like a cohesive application. Use the same resume font , bullet point style, and numbers. That will leave a great impression on your reader, even when you reword the data to make a more persuasive narrative.

6. Address the reader directly (if you know the name)

The more personalized the cover letter, the better it will be received. So, if you know the hiring manager’s name — through online research or even LinkedIn— you should include it now. “Please contact me at your earliest convenience.”

“I look forward to speaking to you and encourage you to reach out with any questions.”

“Please let me know when you’d like to discuss my resume further.”

Remember, the call to action should always be in the very last sentences before you close out the letter. Make it conversational, but never pushy. It is the hiring manager's job to review applications and contact the best candidates, so be polite without sounding desperate.

8. Add your signature

 It goes without saying that you should include your name to the end of the letter. However, add that personalized, executive touch, paste in your actual signature. It takes minimal effort but can go a long way. The visual impact of your signature carries more weight than you might imagine and will help you to make a lasting impression on the hiring manager.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted in a letter on Monday that his company, Facebook, was pressured by the Biden-Harris administration to censor Americans, particularly regarding COVID-19 content.

Zuckerberg made the admission in a letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, more than a year after providing the committee with thousands of documents as part of its investigation into content moderation on online platforms.

Along with documents, the Meta CEO said, the company has provided a dozen employees to be available for transcribed interviews, stressing Meta’s cooperation with the investigation.

"There’s a lot of talk right now around how the U.S. government interacts with companies like Meta, and I want to be clear about our position," Zuckerberg wrote. "Our platforms are for everyone – we’re about promoting speech and helping people connect in a safe and secure way. As part of this, we regularly hear from governments around the world and others with various concerns around public discourse and public safety."

He told Jordan that in 2021, "senior officials" from the Biden administration and White House "repeatedly pressured our teams for months to censor certain COVID-19 content, including humor and satire."

When Facebook did not agree with the censorship, Zuckerberg said, the Biden administration expressed a lot of frustration.

"Ultimately, it was our decision whether or not to take content down, and we own our decisions, including COVID-19-related changes we made to our enforcement in the wake of this pressure," Zuckerberg wrote. "I believe the government pressure was wrong, and I regret that we were not more outspoken about it.

"I also think we made some choices that, with the benefit of hindsight and new information, we wouldn’t make today," he added. "Like I said to our teams at the time, I feel strongly that we should not compromise our content standards to pressure from any Administration in either direction – and we’re ready to push back if something like this happens."

A White House spokesperson responded to Fox News, "When confronted with a deadly pandemic, this administration encouraged responsible actions to protect public health and safety. Our position has been clear and consistent: we believe tech companies and other private actors should take into account the effects their actions have on the American people, while making independent choices about the information they present."

Facebook declined to comment beyond the text of the letter.

The committee first subpoenaed Meta for documents and information on Feb. 15, 2023, related to content moderation and Meta's engagements with the executive branch to censor speech. 

At the time, the committee was investigating whether, and to what extent, the executive branch pressured or worked with private companies to stifle or tamp down certain kinds of speech at the request of the government, which could potentially be a violation of the First Amendment.

In Monday’s letter, Zuckerberg also wrote about throttling the Hunter Biden laptop story.

He wrote that the FBI warned his company about "a potential Russian disinformation operation" regarding the Biden family and Burisma, leading up to the 2020 election.

Zuckerberg said a New York Post story that fall reported on corruption allegations involving Biden’s family, so they had fact-checkers review the story and temporarily demote it while waiting for a reply.

"It’s since been made clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in retrospect, we shouldn’t have demoted the story," Zuckerberg wrote. "We’ve changed our policies and processes to make sure this doesn’t happen again – for instance, we no longer temporarily demote things in the U.S. while waiting for fact-checkers."

Meta CEO Zuckerberg says U.S. pressure on Covid-19 posts was 'wrong'

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg believes U.S. government pressure on his social media platforms to take down certain Covid-19 content in 2021 was "wrong," and said he would resist similar attempts in the future, according to a letter submitted to a US congressional committee.

In the letter, addressed to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and released by Republicans on the committee, Zuckerberg addressed a number of controversies centered on content moderation on his platforms.

He also asserted that he did not plan on repeating funding efforts for US election infrastructure ahead of the country's presidential poll this year, donations that had drawn sharp criticism from Republicans.

Zuckerberg's submission to the committee comes just over two months out from a tightly contested US presidential election race, with the spotlight on widespread online misinformation about the candidates.

Regarding the pandemic, the Facebook founder said the Biden administration had in 2021 "repeatedly pressured our teams for months to censor certain COVID-19 content, including humor and satire."

"I believe the government pressure was wrong, and I regret that we were not more outspoken about it," Zuckerberg wrote.

"I feel strongly that we should not compromise our content standards due to pressure from any Administration in either direction -- and we're ready to push back if something like this happens again."

Republicans took the letter as a victory, with the Republicans' House Judiciary Committee account on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, labeling it a "big win for free speech."

Republicans in Congress have been targeting social media and tech companies in recent months, alleging that they are suppressing or censoring conservative views.

Zuckerberg also said he would not be repeating his Covid-era push to fund non-profits working to support US electoral infrastructure due to such donations being seen by Republicans as being partisan.

"My goal is to be neutral and not play a role one way or another -- or to even appear to be playing a role," he wrote.

The letter also touched on controversy regarding Facebook's handling of a story regarding US President Joe Biden's son Hunter that was published by the New York Post.

Zuckerberg said the story was "temporarily demoted" while Facebook fact checkers probed the possibility of it being "a potential Russian disinformation operation."

The Meta CEO said the story was ultimately found not to be part of such an operation and that the platform has changed its policy such that posts in the United States are no longer demoted while fact checkers investigate them.

The festival shifts tone Thursday, when eyes turn to Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas in "Maria", Pablo Larrain's biopic about the opera diva's tormented life -- one of 21 films in contention for the top Golden Lion prize to be awarded September 7.

Also much anticipated is the dark psychological thriller "Joker: Folie a Deux", the sequel to US director Todd Phillips' 2019 Venice-winning film loosely based on the DC Comics characters and set in a gritty Gotham City.

The sequel brings back Joaquin Phoenix, who won an Oscar for his depiction of the failed clown descending into mental illness, this time paired with Lady Gaga as his sidekick and love interest Harley Quinn.

US actress Sigourney Weaver, who is getting a lifetime achievement award at the Venice Film Festival

Bond star Daniel Craig stars in "Queer" from Italy's Luca Guadagnino, an adaptation of the William Burroughs novel set in 1940s Mexico City, while Australian director Justin Kurzel's "The Order" features Jude Law as an FBI agent investigating white supremacy in the Pacific Northwest.

Spain's Pedro Almodovar is back with his first full-length film in English, "The Room Next Door", with Moore and Tilda Swinton.

Nicole Kidman stars with Antonio Banderas in the erotic thriller "Babygirl" from Dutch director Halina Reijn, about a powerful woman CEO who embarks on a torrid affair with a much-younger male intern.

The roster also includes US director Brady Corbet's "The Brutalist", featuring Adrien Brody as a Hungarian Jewish architect who emigrates to America after World War II and embarks on a project promising to change the course of his life.

Alongside the studio films and their stars, the festival is also hosting independent films often exploring often subjects, including two documentaries about the Ukraine war -- "Songs of Slow Burning Earth" by Ukrainian director Olha Zhurba and "Russians at War", in which Russian-Canadian filmmaker Anastasia Trofimova was embedded with a Russian army battalion in eastern Ukraine.

Israel director Amos Gitai's "Why War" is based on correspondence between two of the 20th century's brightest minds -- Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud -- on the subject of war.

And Goran Hugo Olsson said his documentary, "Israel Palestine on Swedish Television 1958-1989", based on 30 years of public broadcasting archives, was his "most painful film" to date.

All four films are playing out of competition.

With "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice", Burton fans get to revisit the madcap world of his 1988 cult classic 36 years later.

The "Edward Scissorhands" director updates the oddball family drama centred on Lydia, played by Ryder, whose teenage daughter (Jenna Ortega) discovers a mystery in the attic, accidentally unleashing mayhem once again on the Deetz household.

When asked by a reporter whether another sequel about the prankish, irreverent ghoul Beetlejuice could be on the cards, Burton joked: "Well, let's do the math."

"It took 35 years (to do this sequel), I'll be over 100 (for a third). I guess it's possible -- medical science these days -- but I don't think so."

New remarks from J.D. Vance have surfaced about people without children, and a Democratic activist said the Republican vice presidential nominee was an "anvil" around his running mate's neck.

The Ohio Republican senator lashed out at Randi Weingarten, the head of the American Federation of Teachers, in remarks recorded in 2021, suggesting she and others on the left had no right to influence children because they had none of their own.

“You know, so many of the leaders of the left, and I hate to be so personal about this, but they’re people without kids, trying to brainwash the minds of our children,” Vance told the Center for Christian Virtue leadership forum moderated by conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt in October 2021. “If she wants to brainwash and destroy the mind of children, she should have some of her own and leave ours the hell alone."

Brad Woodhouse, a Democratic Party activist and president of Protect Our Care, told CNN that Vance was proving to be a "disastrous" choice as Donald Trump's running mate, saying these resurfaced remarks underline his infamous slurs against "childless cat ladies."

"Who does he think he is?" Woodhouse said. "I mean, some people can't have children, some people have circumstances where they don't want children or can't have children at a certain time. I mean, this this is turning off suburban America. There is no doubt in my mind that J.D. Vance is huge anvil on Trump's chances of winning because of stuff like this, and they'll say, 'Well, he made one comment, it was sarcastic.' It's not, it's over and over and over, and it's really as Tim Walz would say, it's weird as hell."

Zuckerberg Says Biden Officials ‘Pressured’ Meta to ‘Censor’ Some COVID-Related Content

M eta Platforms Inc. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg alleged that Facebook was “pressured” by the U.S. government to censor content related to COVID-19 during the global pandemic and that he regrets the company’s decision to accede to the demands.

“In 2021, senior officials from the Biden Administration, including the White House, repeatedly pressured our teams for months to censor certain COVID-19 content, including humor and satire,” Zuckerberg wrote in a letter to the Committee on the Judiciary of the U.S. House of Representatives. And while it was Meta’s decision whether to remove content, he continues, “the government pressure was wrong, and I regret that we were not more outspoken about it.”

During the pandemic, Facebook officials drew ire from critics of lockdowns, vaccines and masking mandates because it removed certain posts, saying they contained misinformation related to the virus or otherwise went against its policies. In all, Facebook took down more than 20 million pieces of content in just over a year. Zuckerberg joins other social media executives, including Jack Dorsey, former CEO of blogging platform Twitter, in lamenting past instances of content moderation that, in their view, went too far.

There’s a growing global debate over how far social media companies should go in policing the comments, images and other content posted by their users. Some platforms believe they should be hands off when it comes to telling users what they can and can’t say online, while some governments say that an overly laissez-faire stance can beget criminal behavior. French officials arrested Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov during the weekend, alleging that the company failed to adequately combat crime on the messaging app, including the spread of child sexual abuse material.

On the eve of the U.S. presidential election, pitting Vice President Kamala Harris against former President Donald Trump, Zuckerberg is also taking pains to appear non-partisan. “My goal is to be neutral and not play a role one way or another—or to even appear to be playing a role,” Zuckerberg wrote in the letter, the contents of which were posted to the Facebook page of the House Judiciary Committee and confirmed by Meta. He was writing in reference to contributions made in the last presidential cycle to support electoral infrastructure.
