When it comes to typing a message, font choice can sometimes add a creative touch to your work, but for mass media formats like newspapers , academic papers, TV and popular web sites, sticking to a legible font is often more important than the flourish of decorative fonts.

Here, we'll go over some candidates for the easiest font to read in print and web documents, along with some history of typesetting and what makes for a readable font.

Common Qualities of the Most Readable Fonts

Serif vs. sans serif fonts, 4 of the best sans serif fonts, 4 of the best serif fonts, dishonorable mentions: fonts to avoid, the first printed font.

The easiest fonts to read are designed to be able to reach the most amount of people. They may be reading the font off of printed documents, road signs, or on mobile devices with low resolution screens. The reader could also potentially have eyesight problems or be a fair distance away from the text.

With these factors in mind, the most readable fonts need to have very distinguishable characters that can be easily read by the viewer at a variety of font sizes. The ideal font can serve everyone as long as they are literate, and it will also make the process easier for those just learning to read. Font weight is also an important factor.

For instance, things like road signs which are intended to be viewed far distances generally feature bold letter shapes. Readable font should also make capital letters and lowercase letters easy to tell apart from one another, with careful spacing between words and characters to make sure nothing appears to overlap or spread too far apart.

While browsing online, reading a newspaper or typing in a document editor like Microsoft Word, there are thousands of different fonts you could potentially encounter. However, popular fonts tend to fall in one of two categories : serif fonts and sans serif fonts.

Serif Fonts

The serif font style (named from the Germanic word for "pen stroke") was first designed in the late 1700s and features little flourishes or "tails" on each letter that give the fonts a bit of character.

These tails also showed off the precision quality of the printing dies which were becoming more widely available at the time.

Serif fonts look great blown up to big sizes and on high-resolution computer screens, but they tend to have poorer readability at smaller text sizes. For this reason, newspapers and online articles tend to use a serif font for the headline instead of the main body text of the piece.

Sans Serif Fonts

On the other hand, sans serif typeface is a derivative of serif font and attempts to solve some of its apparent shortcomings. Sans serif fonts do away with the little flourishes of serif and instead focus on bolder letters with very straight lines and uniform curves for maximum legibility.

Sans serif tends to be the easiest type of font to read, sometimes sacrificing creative potential. They're also used in graphic designs that aim to look more "modern" versus older serif typefaces.

  • Arial : Originally based on Helvetica, this is a supremely readable font that can be found on all types of software and web pages.
  • Calibri : In 2007, Calibri replaced Times New Roman as the default font for Microsoft Office apps and became one of the most prolific fonts in the digital space before being replaced itself in 2023 (the new kid on the block is Aptos).
  • Open Sans : This popular sans serif font was commissioned by Google in 2011 and soon became the standard font for the Android mobile operating system.
  • Montserrat : This is a very simple, classy, yet easy-to-read font that looks great in thinner styles, bolded or in italics.
  • Times New Roman : First commissioned by London newspaper The Times in 1931, this ubiquitous serif font became a popular choice for book printing and is now included in most major computer operating systems.
  • Berkeley Old Style : Also known as " Californian " font, this typeface created for the University of California newspaper in the 1930's can add a bit of class to your work without sacrificing readability.
  • Larken : This is the font choice for adding bold, stylish letters to a poster or book title.
  • Merriweather : A popular font choice for modern book printing, this serif derivative has a distinct mid-century feel by combining strong modern lettering with some classical flourishes.
  • Comic Sans : This sans serif font is technically one of the easiest fonts to read, but the exaggerated bubbly style of its lettering means it's the most commonly mocked by graphic designers.
  • Papyrus : Despite a clone typeface being used in the logo for the Avatar movies, this vaguely ancient-looking font has never been taken seriously.
  • Jokerman : This silly font's lettering includes a bunch of needless and inconsistent details which give it poor readability and generally make it too irregular to be used in a professional setting.
  • Wingdings : Before we had an emoji keyboard on our phones, this Microsoft Windows font replaced the characters on your keyboard with seemingly random icons and symbols. This is quite possible the least readable font in existence.

Basically everything that we take for granted today about fonts and typesetting started with the invention of the industrial printing press by Johannes Gutenberg in the 1400's. Before the invention of Gutenberg's press, nearly all books in European circulation were bound and inscribed by monks of the Catholic Church who copied the body text by hand over several weeks.

This was grueling work, causing books to be generally unaffordable to the commoner and literacy rates to be low. Gutenberg's invention drove down the cost of bookmaking and allowed literature to reach the masses.

The default font for this press, Blackletter , was initially based on the writing of the monks, with a big font size and bold, ornate letters. It had style, but it didn't have the readability required for mass media and web design.

Improving Legibility

In 1470, a French printer named Nicolas Jenson came up with what could be considered the first readable typeface: the " Roman " font.

This style did away with ornate flourishes and focused on distinctive letter shapes that were evenly spaced, making it much easier to read by the layman. Many modern variants of the typeset exist today including the popular font, Times New Roman.

The best money-making apps

Ibotta lets you earn cash back on in-store and online purchases at over 2,000 supported retailers. Originally for groceries, it has expanded to include clothing, entertainment and eating out, pet supplies and other categories. Offers can be product or retailer-specific. For others, you’ll need to complete an additional task such as watching a video or taking a poll.

There are three possible ways to earn cash back in stores: Add offers and submit your receipt in the app after your shopping trip (you have 7 days to send in your receipt through the app), link your retailer loyalty accounts or purchase a retailer gift card through the Ibotta app. For online purchases, you shop through the app or with the Ibotta browser extension on your computer.

Payment: PayPal, digital gift card or direct to a bank account.

Pros: You’ll receive cash back on in-store purchases quickly — typically within 24 hours. Ibotta also offers a welcome bonus to new users, referral bonuses and a variety of payment methods.

Cons: Making money can be a slow process. You must have at least $20 in cash back to redeem your earnings (some gift cards require at least $25 in earnings). For online shopping, the pending period for earning cash back varies by retailer. Ibotta also charges an account maintenance fee for inactive (no activity for 180 days) or deactivated accounts. The fee is deducted from your balance, not your bank account.

Download: Android , iOS .

How it works: Rakuten (formerly known as Ebates) rewards shoppers with cash back on purchases from well-known retailers, restaurants and food delivery services. Users can also earn cash back on travel, gift cards and more. It’s straightforward: Create an account, tap on the store where you want to shop in the app, then make the transaction through the portal. You can also link a credit or debit card to your Rakuten account to earn cash back in-store — as long as you activate the deal through the app first. Rakuten credits the cash back to your account after it confirms the purchase with the retailer.

Payment: PayPal or "Big Fat Check."

Pros: Thousands of stores and purchases are eligible for cash back, so you’ll likely find deals where you already shop. New users can earn a welcome bonus after their first qualified purchase. You can also earn welcome and referral bonuses. You can make an impact with your cash back earnings by donating a portion to nonprofit partners.

Cons: As with most cash-back services , you have to spend money to make money. You won’t see your earnings right away, either; Rakuten sends out payments every three months on the company's payment schedule, and you need to hit the minimum cash-back balance to get paid. Unlike other apps like Ibotta, you have to remember to initiate your purchase in the app first. If you forget and make your purchase outside of the app, you can't get credit retroactively.

How it works: Swagbucks is a cash-back and rewards app . You earn points, called "SB," by shopping online (there are over 1,500 participating retailers), taking surveys, watching videos, playing games or fulfilling other tasks through Swagbucks. You can redeem those points for gift cards, prepaid Visa cards or get cash back to your PayPal account. The total points awarded can vary by task. For example, surveys are typically worth about 40 to 200 SB points each. The minimum balance required to redeem depends on the payout option you choose, but some gift cards are available for as low as 300 SB.

Payment: E-gift card, prepaid Visa card or PayPal. You can also redeem SB for Bitcoin through the new Cryptovoucher Gift Card options.

Pros: Swagbucks offers many easy ways to earn rewards, and there’s no waiting period to cash in. Payments usually arrive within 10 business days after redemption. You can also get a $10 bonus with a qualifying $25 purchase when you join.

Cons: It doesn’t pay much; one SB is worth about a cent. With many tasks valued at pennies, it can take a fair amount of time and effort to make substantial money. Additionally, you won’t qualify for every survey or task, although users can earn up to 5 SB per day if they disqualify. Users often report getting kicked out of surveys in the middle of taking them. This can be due to demographics or dishonest or inconsistent answers, according to Swagbucks.

How it works: Fiverr is a freelancing marketplace that features gigs in over 200 categories, such as musician and video and animation. Create an account first, then you can set your profile as a "seller" highlighting your expertise. Post the gig you’re offering, which will include pricing and a description of your services. Pricing ranges from $5 to $995. Clients, known as "buyers," can click through and place orders. You’ll get paid once you complete the job. Fiverr assigns seller levels based on performance. As you move up each tier, you’ll be able to sell more “extras,” such as paid consultations.

Payment:   PayPal, direct to a bank account, Payoneer or credit to a Fiverr Revenue Card (a prepaid card). Minimum withdrawal amounts vary, and your payment processor may charge a withdrawal fee, depending on which option you choose.

Pros: You don’t have to worry about tracking down buyers because they come to you. You can also earn tips. Fiverr also boasts its flexibility, allowing sellers to complete gigs in their own time or around their 9-5 jobs.

Cons: Fiverr takes 20% of your earnings for every gig, including tips, and there’s a standard 14-day waiting period to withdraw money after completing an order (top-tier sellers wait seven days for funds to clear).

Upwork connects freelancers to gigs in writing, design, marketing and other categories on the marketplace. First, you’ll create a profile. It should include information such as the field you’re interested in plus your qualifications, availability and desired rate. Then, you can submit proposals. Clients will review them and offer projects if you seem like a good fit.

You begin each month with a set number of “Connects,” which are like credits that allow you to contact prospective clients. You can earn or pay a small sum for more Connects, but you won’t be charged when clients contact you. You can get paid on an hourly or per-project basis.

Payment: Direct to U.S. Bank, direct to your bank account, wire transfer, Instant Pay, PayPal and Payoneer. Charges apply to some payment options, so be sure to check Upwork for details.

Pros: Upwork helps take the work out of seeking out clients, establishing relationships and getting paid. The service also gives you the flexibility to set your preferred rate and schedule.

Cons: The app is free to download, but initiating contact with lots of clients costs money. Users also get charged a service fee. Upwork takes a 10% cut of your earnings based on how much you’ve billed a client. The more you earn, the more you get to keep. However, you won’t get paid until 10 days after the billing period ends. Remember, too, that you’re competing with other freelancers on the platform. That means clients may choose those who’ve set lower rates.

How it works: OfferUp, which combined with competitor Letgo in 2020, functions as a local marketplace you can use to sell your stuff . If you want to reach a broader audience, OfferUp also allows shipping anywhere within the United States except for Alaska, Arkansas and Hawaii. Create an account and snap a picture of your smartphone, car, sofa or whatever it is you’re selling. Once you add a title, description and price, you can post your listing and chat with buyers directly through the app. Then, you'll ship to or arrange a meeting with the buyer.

Payment: When selling locally, OfferUp recommends sellers take cash from buyers and stay clear of accepting payments by check, cashier's check or using other apps. For shipments, sellers can set up deposits to a debit card or bank account.

Pros: Creating a listing is simple and fast, and you’ll get paid instantly when you make a cash sale. You can also view a prospective buyer’s reviews and ratings to get an idea of how trustworthy they are beforehand. If you ship your item, the buyer pays the cost, and OfferUp provides the label.

Cons: You’re responsible for meeting local buyers in person and handling transactions. Sellers must pay a 12.9% service fee, or a minimum of $1.99, for shipments. To be successful, you’ll likely need to invest in a printer so you can print the shipping labels and mail items to buyers.

How it works: The Poshmark app is tailor-made for selling clothes , accessories and even home decor. After signing up, you take or upload photos of your item, fill out a description, price it and share the listing. You can also feature items in the app’s "Posh Parties," which are virtual shopping events centered around particular brands, categories and themes. Poshmark emails you a prepaid and pre-addressed shipping label once a purchase is made. Then, you send the package via USPS.

Payment: Check, PayPal, Venmo, Instant Transfer or direct deposit to a bank account.

Pros: Poshmark facilitates the entire process, from selling to shipping. Plus, you don’t have to meet with strangers to make a sale. The company will cover lost packages and handle issues between you and the buyer. Getting paid is relatively quick, too; Poshmark issues the money within three days of the buyer receiving the order.

Cons: You’ll pay a fee for selling through Poshmark . The company takes a $2.95 commission for sales under $15 and a 20% commission for sales of $15 or above.

How it works: Premise is a task-based app that provides rewards for users who complete simple tasks. You get paid for sharing local insights to help businesses and communities. Some options include sharing information and photos on what’s happening in your area like traffic jams and local events or taking surveys. You create an account by signing up with an email address. Once enrolled, you can browse the app for activities to complete for cash. You can also set notifications to receive the latest tasks available.

Payment : PayPal, Bitcoin or Payoneer.

Pros: The app markets itself as a community-first service where your opinion can help shape your community. Tasks may be associated with public service entities like libraries, hospitals, stores and governance-related activities.

Cons: Depending on where you live, there may be limited tasks available. Some users state the app itself is also challenging to use, making it difficult to locate the items or tasks in a community.

Download: Android , iOS.

How it works: Upside provides cash back for gas, grocery and restaurant purchases. On average, Upside says users earn 8% cash back on groceries and dining, and there are more than 50,000 retailers and restaurants that participate. Once you sign up, you claim offers through the app and pay for your purchase as you normally would with a credit or debit card. You’ll either check in on the app or scan your receipt to earn your reward. You can cash out anytime.

Payment : PayPal, gift cards or deposit to your bank account.

Pros: Upside focuses on daily essential purchases that many consumers may already be making. According to the app, frequent users earn more than $300 annually by adding Upside to their normal routine.

Cons: The app doesn’t always work as it should, according to several user reviews. To be successful, you’ll have to have the patience to work through technical issues and the receipt uploading process, which some users say isn’t worth the time investment for a minor payout.

What is Telegram and why was its CEO arrested in Paris?

The founder and CEO of the messaging service Telegram was detained at a Paris airport on an arrest warrant alleging his platform has been used for money laundering, drug trafficking and other offenses, French media reported Sunday.

  • Copy Link copied

Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of the messaging app Telegram, was arrested in Paris over the weekend over allegations that his platform is being used for illicit activity including drug trafficking and the distribution of child sexual abuse images.

Durov, who was born in Russia , spent much of his childhood in Italy and is a citizen of France, Russia, the Caribbean island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis, and the United Arab Emirates. He was taken into custody at Paris-Le Bourget Airport in France on Saturday after arriving from Azerbaijan and released Wednesday after four days of questioning. He was ordered to pay 5 million euros for bail and directed to report to a police station twice a week, according to the Paris prosecutor’s office.

In a statement posted to its platform, Telegram said it abides by EU laws and its content moderation is “within industry standards and constantly improving.” Durov, the company added, “has nothing to hide and travels frequently in Europe.”

Here are some details on Telegram, the app at the center of Durov’s arrest.

What is Telegram?

Telegram is an app that allows for one-on-one conversations, group chats and large “channels” that let people broadcast messages to subscribers. Unlike rivals such as Meta’s WhatsApp, Telegram’s group chats allow as many as 200,000 people, compared to a maximum of 1,024 for WhatsApp. Experts have raised concerns that misinformation spreads easily in group chats of that size.

Image

Telegram offers users end-to-end encryption for their communications, but — contrary to a popular misconception — this feature is not on by default. Users have to switch on the option. It also doesn’t work with group chats. That contrasts with rival Signal and Facebook Messenger , where chats are encrypted end-to-end by default.

“Popular Telegram features like group chats and channels are not end-to-end encrypted. That means that Telegram can access their contents,” said John Scott-Railton, senior researcher at the University of Toronto’s Citizenlab. “Similarly, messages between users are not end-to-end encrypted by default, which means that Telegram could also access these messages. Only Telegram’s opt-in ‘secret chat’ feature is end-to-end encrypted, which would prevent Telegram from accessing the chat contents.”

Telegram says it has more than 950 million active users. It is widely used in France as a messaging tool, including by some officials in the presidential palace and in the ministry behind the investigation into Durov. But French investigators have also found the app has been used by Islamic extremists and drug traffickers .

Telegram was launched in 2013 by Durov and his brother Nikolai. According to Telegram, Pavel Durov supports the app “financially and ideologically while Nikolai’s input is technological.”

Before Telegram, Durov founded VKontakte, Russia’s largest social network. The company came under pressure amid the Russian government’s crackdown after mass pro-democracy protests rocked Moscow at the end of 2011 and 2012. Durov said government authorities demanded that the VKontakte take down the online communities of Russian opposition activists. It later asked the platform to hand over the personal data of users who took part in the 2013 uprising in Ukraine, which eventually ousted a pro-Kremlin president.

But Durov sold his stake in VKontakte after pressure from Russian authorities in 2014. He also left the country. Today, Telegram is based in Dubai, which Durov called “the best place for a neutral platform like ours to be in if we want to make sure we can defend our users’ privacy and freedom of speech” in an April interview with conservative talk show host Tucker Carlson .

Why was Durov arrested?

On Wednesday, French authorities handed preliminary charges to Durov for allowing alleged criminal activity on Telegram and barred him from leaving France pending further investigation. Allegations against Durov include that his platform is being used for child sexual abuse material and drug trafficking and that Telegram refused to share information or documents with investigators when required by law.

The first preliminary charge against him was for “complicity in managing an online platform to allow illicit transactions by an organized group,” a crime that can carry a sentence of up to 10 years in prison and 500,000 euro fine, the prosecutor’s office said.

Preliminary charges under French law mean magistrates have strong reason to believe a crime was committed but allow more time for further investigation.

What has been the response?

There was no immediate comment from Durov or Telegram to the charges.

In Russia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on reports of Durov’s arrest in France.

“We still don’t know what exactly Durov is being accused of,” Peskov said Monday during his daily media conference call. “We haven’t heard any official statements on that matter.”

“Let’s wait until the charges are announced — if they are announced,” Peskov said.

Russian government officials have expressed outrage at Durov’s detention, with some calling it politically motivated and proof of the West’s double standard on freedom of speech. The outcry has raised eyebrows among Kremlin critics: In 2018 Russian authorities themselves tried to block Telegram but failed, withdrawing the ban in 2020.

Elsewhere, Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of X who has called himself a “ free speech absolutist ,” has been speaking out in support of Durov and posted ”#freePavel” following the arrest.

“It is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner are responsible for abuse of that platform,” Telegram’s post after the arrest said. “Almost a billion users globally use Telegram as a means of communication and as a source of vital information. We’re awaiting a prompt resolution of this situation. Telegram is with you all.”

Does Telegram moderate content?

Western governments have often criticized Telegram for a lack of content moderation, which experts say opens up the messaging platform for potential use in money laundering, drug trafficking and the sharing of material linked to the sexual exploitation of minors.

Compared to other messaging platforms, Telegram is “less secure (and) more lax in terms of policy and detection of illegal content,” said David Thiel, a Stanford University researcher, who has investigated the use of online platforms for child exploitation, at its Internet Observatory.

In addition, Telegram “appears basically unresponsive to law enforcement,” Thiel said, adding that messaging service WhatsApp “submitted over 1.3 million CyberTipline reports in 2023 (and) Telegram submits none.”

In 2022, Germany issued fines of 5.125 million euros ($5 million at the time) against the operators of Telegram for failing to comply with German law. The Federal Office of Justice said that Telegram FZ-LLC hasn’t established a lawful way for reporting illegal content or named an entity in Germany to receive official communication.

Both are required under German laws that regulate large online platforms.

Last year, Brazil temporarily suspended Telegram over its failure to surrender data on neo-Nazi activity related to a police inquiry into school shootings in November.

Associated Press Writers Barbara Surk in Nice, France, and Daria Litvinova in Tallinn, Estonia contributed to this story.

Where Kamala Harris Stands on the Issues: Abortion, Immigration and More

She wants to protect the right to abortion nationally. Here’s what else to know about her positions.

By Maggie Astor

  • Published July 21, 2024 Updated Aug. 24, 2024

With Vice President Kamala Harris having replaced President Biden on the Democratic ticket, her stances on key issues will be scrutinized by both parties and the nation’s voters.

She has a long record in politics: as district attorney of San Francisco, as attorney general of California, as a senator, as a presidential candidate and as vice president.

Here is an overview of where she stands.

Ms. Harris supports legislation that would protect the right to abortion nationally, as Roe v. Wade did before it was overturned in 2022, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

After the Dobbs ruling, she became central to the Biden campaign’s efforts to keep the spotlight on abortion, given that Mr. Biden — with his personal discomfort with abortion and his support for restrictions earlier in his career — was a flawed messenger. In March, she made what was believed to be the first official visit to an abortion clinic by a president or vice president.

She consistently supported abortion rights during her time in the Senate, including cosponsoring legislation that would have banned common state-level restrictions, like requiring doctors to perform specific tests or have hospital admitting privileges in order to provide abortions.

As a presidential candidate in 2019, she argued that states with a history of restricting abortion rights in violation of Roe should be subject to what is known as pre-clearance for new abortion laws — those laws would have to be federally approved before they could take effect. That proposal is not viable now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe.

2. Google Slides

presentation apps - Google-slides

Everyone has heard of Google, right? So it’s no surprise that Google Slides is one of the more popular presentation apps and PowerPoint alternatives available.

But popular does not always mean best. While the service is free to any Google account holder, its slide layouts are basic at best and its design capabilities are extremely limited.

presentation apps - Google Slides home page

However, if you need a quick and to-the-point presentation, Google Slides can be a great option since it’s free and has next to no learning curve. If you’ve used PowerPoint, you know how to use Google Slides.

  • Free for anyone with a Google account.
  • Easy to use for creating a basic presentation.
  • Users can collaborate in real time and make comments and edits throughout the slides.
  • Integrate with all Google workspaces, including Google Meet.
  • Limited design capabilities.
  • Essentially a PowerPoint clone.

presentation apps - prezi

Another popular presentation app is Prezi. The main feature that Prezi is known for is allowing its users to easily create non-linear presentations.

This type of presentation can be highly engaging for your audience because instead of side-to-side transitions, you can create a pan and zoom effect each time you switch over to another slide.

presentation app - Prezi homepage

While this type of presentation can be a fun change of pace for your audience, Prezi’s slide design options are not very visually appealing, and non-linear presentations can still be created in many other presentation makers by linking slides.

Prezi templates are also an excellent starting point for creating stunning presentations.

  • Can create engaging and non-linear presentations.
  • Embed interactive elements like video and audio into your presentations.
  • Can only create non-linear presentations, which can actually cause motion sickness in some viewers.
  • Non-linear presentations can also be created in other presentation software, making the need for Prezi obsolete.

presentation apps - Canva

Canva is a well-known cloud-based graphic design software , but it's not too popular for presentations. While it still has the “capabilities” for presentation design, it's main focus is on social media graphics.

As a creative presentation app, it offers a few visually appealing slide templates and you can create designs in the correct presentation dimensions.

presentation app - Canva homepage

There are a few static chart options and Canva also has tons of graphic elements to choose from, such as photos, shapes and icons, so you can still create static presentations in their software.

  • Beautiful premade presentation templates to choose from.
  • Graphic elements like photos, shapes and icons to spice up your design.
  • No content blocks or slide library available to save larger pieces of content and reuse later.

5. Venngage

presentation apps - venngage

Venngage is first and foremost an infographic maker.

Similarly to Canva, they have added basic capabilities for creating presentations , but their design dashboard isn’t nearly as robust as some other presentation apps and software on this list.

While there are a number of presentation templates available for each of their plans, Venngage also doesn’t offer any type of animation or transition features for moving from slide to slide.

presentation app - Venngage homepage

When it comes to creating a presentation, Venngage is in the same boat as Canva. Both certainly can be used to create a presentation, but they aren’t ideal, and they don’t offer as many features as a presentation app meant for building slideshows.

  • Well-designed templates to get you started on your presentation design.
  • Icons and photos to choose from for use in your slideshow.
  • Not created with presentations in mind, so while it’s possible to create one, it’s not ideal.

6. Beautiful.ai

The Beautiful AI logo against a white background

Beautiful.ai is a presentation maker that was created to focus on presentation design, like Visme. But while it’s meant for creating presentations, it doesn’t offer full-range design capabilities.

Instead, you’re given eight different themes with about 60 slide layouts to choose from that keep elements snapped into place, regardless of how you might want to customize your slides.

presentation app - Beautiful.ai

While this software is a great way to “stay in the lines,” per se, with your presentation design, it doesn’t allow you to design your presentation the way you want. If you’re trying to create a slide that falls outside of their parameters, you’re stuck.

  • Visually appealing templates and slide layouts to choose from in your presentation.
  • Easy to use drag-and-drop editor that allows you to quickly slide your points around on your slide to re-order them.
  • Don’t have full-range design capabilities on your slide. You’re stuck only designing in the areas the software lets you design in.
  • No free plans. Basic plan starts at $12 a month.

7. Slidebean

presentation apps - slidebean

Slidebean advertises itself as an AI-powered presentation maker. It allows users to separate the content and design of its slides, inputting content in one section and adjusting the slide design in a separate area.

When creating a presentation in Slidebean, once you add your content into the text boxes, you can switch over to the design section and have their AI automatically assemble your content pieces around the page in a way that makes sense.

presentation app - Slidebean

You’re also able to refresh different AI designs until you find one that you like. Although this can be helpful for those who don’t really want to worry about their design, it is extremely limited, and they don’t have a lot of templates to choose from.

As one of the best business presentation apps, their templates also focus on startups and entrepreneurs , so if your presentation doesn’t have that focus, your selection is limited.

  • No need to worry about design at all.
  • It’s a comprehensive pitching tool for entrepreneurs, not just a presentation maker.
  • Doesn’t give you full range of design capabilities.
  • Has limited templates.

8. Infogram

presentation apps - infogram

Infogram is another cloud-based graphic design software that tries to do everything, including presentations, but really wasn’t built for that specific purpose.

There are less than 50 available premade templates and they aren’t very well designed. Redeeming qualities include the fact that animation and transition features are available, as well as data visualization tools .

presentation app - Infogram

While there are icons and photos to choose from, most of them are premium and not available for use in the free plan.

  • Animation and transitions available for your slideshows.

Create and share Show presentations on any Mac or PC plus device using iOS and Android operating systems. Zoho Show also has many integrations with other apps for better productivity. The minimalistic UI is a positive addition to the editor.

Use on any device. Mac, PC, iOS, Android. Large selection of premade templates for every industry. Available to create both online and offline. Lots of integrations.

It makes more sense to use the Zoho suite than Show on its own. You can’t buy just Show; subscriptions are for groups of apps. Not enough data visualization features.

You can even download the app onto your smartphone or tablet to create full presentation decks straight from your mobile device. It also syncs presentations between your computer and phone apps, making it easy to create and edit in different areas.

The biggest caveat is that its presentation template design is outdated and not very pretty.

  • Allows you to create and edit presentations on both your mobile device and computer.
  • Keynote is designed for Mac. To use it on PC, you need a workaround.
  • Similar to PowerPoint, so it doesn’t really focus on the design of your presentation, just gives you the ability to create one.

12. Flowvella

presentation apps - Flowvella

Flowvella is a downloadable desktop and mobile app that allows you to create interactive presentations wherever and whenever you need to. While it’s a fast and efficient app, it lacks some of the features any good presentation needs.

  • Has offline editing capabilities.
  • Has analytics for you to view presentation performance.
  • Used by museums for interactive displays.
  • Must have space on your phone or computer to download the app.
  • Simple technology with outdated features.

Presentation apps - Showpad home page

The app is available on both Android and Apple devices, so there aren’t limitations to which smartphones and tablets will have access.

Using an app like this can be very helpful when you’re rehearsing your content so that you don’t go over on time, and you know which anecdotes you can fit in.

Just make sure when you’re giving your actual presentation, you can see your phone screen so you’ll know when you’re running out of time.

  • Gives you a heads up when you’re getting close to the end of your speaking time.

Explore a curated selection of paid and free slideshow apps for your smartphone to transform your photos and videos into captivating presentations.

This guide will take you through the best slideshow apps for smartphones (and more).

There’s nothing better than getting creative with the photos and videos you’ve taken and sharing the results with friends and family.

Of course, making these kinds of slideshows can have professional uses too and help you succeed in your job.

While the native software on both iPhone and Android can comfortably make slideshows (Videos in Photos on iPhone or Google Photos on Android), they aren’t as feature-rich as a dedicated slideshow maker.

The photo slideshow apps below have added features and were chosen based on their ease of use, functionality, and, honestly, how much fun they are to use.

Table of Contents

What is the Best Slideshow App for Smartphones in 2024?

Inshot (best photo slideshow app overall).

Instagram's new video editor is now available on the app store.

  • Lots of features
  • Reasonably priced
  • User-friendly
  • Can export 4K
  • Video slideshow features
  • Need to upgrade to maximise potential

Inshot is an excellent all-round video editing and photo slideshow maker app. It’s one of the most feature-packed and easy-to-use apps of this kind for use on the iPhone and Android.

Like with many of these apps, there’s a free version and a premium version you need to pay a subscription for. The free version has plenty of features for most people (although it has ads and watermarks), and the premium version is reasonably priced.

With it, you can set up video slideshow projects, photo projects, and collages.

It has a very simple, easy-to-use interface with a preview window and an editing timeline. It is very easy to add or remove pictures and videos to or from the timeline just by dragging and dropping.

In the timeline, too, you can trim or reorder clips to suit your needs.

It has a good selection of different canvas settings (aspect ratios) to help you set up your photo slideshow and tailor-make it for different social media platforms. For example, vertical for Tik-Tok, square format for Instagram, and so on.

See the video below, which shows how you can make a slideshow using Inshot:

Inshot makes it simple to add effects (these are basically filters) and transitions to your slideshow, as they have a good library of these.

You can also add stickers and text to your photo slideshow, and these are added as layers so they’re easy to edit afterwards.

The app also contains more advanced features like adding video within video, but those are only available to Premium users.

As for its audio capabilities, you can extract the audio directly from your video, but it’s also easy to add other audio as necessary.

Inshot has a huge music library of its own, but you can also import tracks from your iTunes library or use your phone to record a voiceover if you want that to be your audio track.

Once the audio track is in place, you can manipulate it to fit your visuals, for example, to fade in and fade out.

It’s easy to export your finished content to a variety of resolutions and speeds, up to a maximum of 4K at 60fps. Once you’ve done that, you can share it to any social media platform straight from the app itself.

FotoPlay Slideshow Maker (Best Free SlideShow App for Android)

A screenshot of a photo video editor app on a phone.

  • Free photo slideshows
  • Adjustable intensity filters
  • Easy to learn and use
  • Variety of  background music
  • No 4K download

FotoPlay Slideshow Maker is an easy and free-to-use video and photo slideshow maker that has a decent amount of features.

Its interface is simple and easy to learn, plus there are a lot of templates to help you set things up with minimal effort.

If you don’t want templates, you can start with a blank canvas, and it’s easy to import your own photos and videos from your camera roll.

Once you have your content in place, you can customize the photos and videos by adding effects (you can also adjust the intensity of these), and add stickers and frames from the app’s large library of them.

You can also add animations to your photos like pan and zoom or dissolve, which work on the content itself or the transitions.

With the traditional preview window and timeline set up, it’s simple to see what you are creating as you’re creating it, and also easy to make micro-adjustments to the lengths of the clips and the duration of effects and animations.

You can adjust the speed of each clip individually, plus the transitions and music settings.

FotoPlay Slideshow Maker has an audio extractor that lets you scrape the music from any video. You can also import your own music or use the app’s music library to add soundtracks.

Once everything’s ready, you can save your photo slideshow at different aspect ratios for different social media platforms and then download it at a maximum of Full-HD 1080p resolution.

  • Best apps to turn photos into anime

PicPlayPost (Best Free SlideShow App for iPhone Video Clips & Photos)

A screenshot of a video editor on a mobile phone.

  • Supports all media formats
  • Auto slideshow setting
  • Video collage feature
  • Easy to use
  • Lower resolution downloads than other apps

PicPlayPost is a free slideshow maker app for photo and video slideshows and video collages.

The slideshows you create can be up to thirty minutes in duration, and you can set them up according to a range of aspect ratios suitable for different social media. For example, 16:9 for YouTube, 4:3 for Facebook, etc.

If you’re pressed for time or just don’t want to do any work yourself, the app can produce an automated slideshow for you. Just select all the content you want to be added, drag everything in, and PicPlayPost will set up the slideshow for you.

Otherwise, you can do everything manually.

Like the other apps in this guide, it has a simple interface with a preview window and a timeline. So you can move clips around, reorder and trim them, add and delete them, and get everything looking exactly as you want it to.

You can also import GIFs from Giphy and add animated text and stickers to your slideshows, and the app also lets you create live wallpapers.

One interesting feature is that any text you add to a slideshow video can, if you like, be pinned to a moving object, so it can follow it around.

It’s easy to add audio tracks to your photo slideshow, as you can buy music straight from the app.

PicPlayPost also allows you to create slideshow video collages with up to four videos playing simultaneously or sequentially, and you can add your own music and transitions to this.

The slideshow video collage function is not just for videos either. It supports all media formats, including photos, videos, GIFs, and live photos.

Anything you create on PicPlayPost can be shared to social media directly from the app.

  • How to use Photoroom app

MS PowerPoint (Best SlideShow App for Presentations)

Microsoft powerpoint app for iphone and ipad.

  • Powerful photo slideshow software
  • AI assistant
  • Templates and other design aids
  • Supports all forms of media
  • Collaborative tool
  • Subscription-based
  • Steep learning curve

MS PowerPoint is the corporate chief of photo slideshow makers, a piece of software so ubiquitous that it has entered the daily lexicon in the same way that Google has.

It’s software designed for collaboratively creating slideshow presentations and for sharing with other people across devices.

You can set up your presentation from scratch or take a template from its vast library of them. Once you have a template set up, you’re not stuck within its starting parameters.

You can get right to work customizing and formatting its colours and layout.

There are also no limits when it comes to the media you can insert into the presentation.

Of course, audio is supported, still images and video, but you can also add animations or even 3D elements either from your own archive or the Microsoft library.

And the way that you can interact with the software is also pretty flexible.

Gone are the days of just dragging and dropping elements in or typing text out.

Of course, you can still do this, but you can now also draw straight onto a slide or convert handwritten notes to text. You can even dictate your presentation’s text with the voice-to-text feature.

As well as the templates I mentioned earlier, you can get a different kind of help with the design of your presentation.

With the Designer and Ideas feature, you can, for example, type in a title for your slideshow, and the software will make image suggestions for you.

And that’s not as smart as it gets, either.

The new Copilot feature will help you write the presentation from prompts you give it, fine-tune your language if you ask it to, and intelligently help you create a narrative arc.

Powerpoint has almost become a robot colleague.

And, if you’re working on a presentation or photo slideshow with flesh and blood colleagues, you can communicate with them within the software, and you can all track one another’s edits.

12 Tips for Making an Entertaining Photo Slideshow

Creating an entertaining photo slideshow is about more than just displaying images in sequence.

Here are some tips to elevate your slideshow and captivate your audience:

  • Storytelling is Key : Arrange your photos in a way that tells a story. Whether it’s chronological, thematic, or based on mood, a narrative flow keeps viewers engaged.
  • Choose Quality Over Quantity : Instead of overwhelming viewers with countless images, select the best ones that truly convey the essence of your story or theme.
  • Use Transitions Wisely : While it’s tempting to use flashy transitions, it’s often the subtle ones that work best. However, occasional dramatic transitions can emphasize key moments.
  • Add Music : A well-chosen soundtrack can elevate the emotional impact of your slideshow. Ensure the background music matches the mood you’re trying to convey.
  • Incorporate Motion : Pan and zoom effects, often referred to as the “Ken Burns effect”, can add dynamism to still photos.
  • Use Captions Sparingly : While it’s okay to provide context, avoid cluttering your slideshow with too much text. Let the images speak for themselves.
  • Vary Photo Durations : Not every photo should have the same screen time. Some images might require a longer view, while others can be fleeting.
  • Include Short Video Clips : If you have relevant video clips, intersperse them with photos. This breaks the monotony and adds a dynamic element.
  • Maintain a Consistent Style : Whether it’s in the choice of transitions, color schemes, or fonts, maintaining consistency gives your slideshow a professional touch.
  • End with a Bang : Conclude with a memorable image or a summary slide that encapsulates the essence of your slideshow.
  • Test on Different Devices : Before presenting, ensure your slideshow looks good on various devices, from laptops to projectors, to ensure the best viewing experience.
  • Engage the Audience : If presenting live, interact with your audience. Share anecdotes, ask questions, or provide additional context verbally.

Remember, the goal of an entertaining slideshow is to evoke emotions, tell a story, and engage the viewer.

All the best photo slideshow apps in this guide have the ability to help you do just this.

FAQs on SlideShow Apps

How do I make a slideshow of pictures?

It’s quite simple to make a photo slideshow these days with all the software and apps out there.

First of all, you need your content, the photos, either some you’ve taken or copyright-free images you’ve found online, and then you just upload them to the software.

Many slideshow apps will automatically make a slideshow for you, but if you want manual control, that’s built-in.

Use the software to move your pictures around, adjust the length they show for, add music, and all that sort of thing.

You can have a complete slideshow ready to share in a matter of minutes.

How do I make a slideshow with music for free?

There are plenty of options for making slideshows with music for free, both with desktop software and slideshow apps for mobile phones.

You can normally add music of your choice from your library or use the app’s library instead.

Free options for desktop computers include PhotoStage, Filmora and iMovie, and free slideshow apps for mobile phones include PicPlayPost and Fotoplay Slideshow Maker.

Bear in mind, too, that most paid slideshow apps for mobile phones have free versions. If you’re just looking to make something simple, and don’t need access to a huge array of, for example, effects and stickers, they might be enough.

9 best PowerPoint apps and tools for Android

Microsoft PowerPoint best PowerPoint apps and tools for Android

Presentation software is a powerful tool in the workplace. It’s especially true for PowerPoint, the most popular presentation software. It helps freshen up lectures, organize information in an easily deliverable way, and is generally accessible to most people. There are a lot of options as well. You can find presentation software on computers and smartphones.

Additionally, some tools make each platform easier. We have a bit of everything on this list. Here are the best PowerPoint apps and tools for Android.

The best PowerPoint apps and tools:

Andropen office, google home, google slides, microsoft powerpoint.

  • Remote desktop apps

Unified Remote

Price: Free / $12.99

AndrOpen Office is likely the best bet for Linux users. It fully supports OpenOffice file formats and includes Writer, Calc, and Impress. Impress is the presentation software. It can also read PowerPoint files as well. In terms of PowerPoint apps, it does pretty well. You can create a slideshow, add graphics, add text, and the basic stuff like that. The free version is more usable than the first free version of most paid software. The app also works perfectly with niche functions like Samsung DeX. It’s not quite as powerful as Microsoft PowerPoint, but it’s close enough for most people.

Price: Free / $2.99 per item

Clicker screenshot

Clicker works a lot like ASUS Remote Link. It lets you connect to your computer and use your phone as a presentation clicker. It also seems to work on Mac, Linux, Windows, iOS, and Android. That should cover just about everybody. In any case, the workflow for this one is pretty obvious. You create your PowerPoint on your computer, where you have full access to all of the tools. Then, you use this app to present the PowerPoint at your meeting. There is also remote trackpad functionality, Samsung S-Pen support, and space to keep notes for your speech. There aren’t many presentation clicker apps like this one, so it’s nice to see that at least one is really good.

Price: Free

Google Home screenshot 2022

Google Home is an out-of-the-box idea. You use it with a Chromecast to mirror your phone screen to a display. You can then use your phone to present your PowerPoint. This lets you work on your PowerPoint either on desktop or mobile. You must put the project on your mobile phone, use Google Home to mirror it, and begin your presentation. Chromecasts are small, easy to carry, and very easy to use. It lets you use the presentation space’s existing resources without carting in some extra equipment. Plus, the app is free.

Google Slides is the presentation app from the Google Drive office suite. It’s largely considered the top or at least second-best option in terms of PowerPoint apps. You can mess with your presentation on your phone or desktop via the web. Plus, Google Drive has live collaboration tools and many other features. Your presentation is stored in the cloud, so you can access and download it whenever you want. Plus, it can read, edit, and save PowerPoint files for excellent cross-product functionality. It’s also, far and away, the best free option available. That makes it great for students without access to a Microsoft Office account.

Price: Free / $9.99 per month

Microsoft PowerPoint screenshot 2022

Microsoft PowerPoint is the top one or two PowerPoint apps in the world. It’s so good that people refer to presentation apps as PowerPoint apps. The mobile version is more functional than its desktop equivalent, even if the desktop variant is more powerful. On top of the usual presentation features, the app also includes a Presenter Coach function to help you prepare for your speech. Luckily, Microsoft has adapted nicely to the times. You can start fresh or edit existing PowerPoint presentations that you started on your computer. The full functionality is available with an Office 365 subscription. The good news is the subscription unlocks both the desktop and mobile versions of PowerPoint with just a single subscription. You also get Microsoft OneDrive space to store and transport your PowerPoints.

Remote Desktop apps

Price: Free / Varies

Microsoft Remote Desktop screenshot 2021

Remote desktop apps are a slightly archaic but very functional method of presenting stuff. These apps let you connect directly to your desktop computer, mirroring everything on your mobile phone. There are usually tools to let you navigate around. Thus, you can connect to your computer and give a presentation straight from your phone without moving any files. You can also use these to work on your PowerPoints straight from your computer, so you don’t lose any functionality by being on a smartphone or tablet. We have Microsoft Remote Desktop linked since it covers most use cases, but others are available, too.

Price: Free / $1.99 per item

Unified Remote is another app that lets you control your computer remotely. It works a lot like the ASUS Remote Link. You connect to your computer and can use the app to navigate the UI, as a mouse and keyboard, and there is a built-in presentation setup. This one is different because it has dedicated “remotes” for many specific apps, like Google Chrome, Spotify, Winamp, and, you guessed it, Microsoft PowerPoint. Downloads are available for Windows, Mac, Linux (Debian and RPM distros), Raspberry Pi (ARMv6 and MIPS), and others. That makes it suitable for just about everybody.

Price: Free / $3.99 per month / $29.99 per year

WPS Office screenshot 2022

WPS Office is just one of many alternative office apps that double as PowerPoint apps. WPS Office has a writer, spreadsheet, and presentation function. The presentation function lets you read and edit PowerPoint files, so it’s a good start there. The app includes various layouts, animations, transitions, and other effects. Additionally, it lets you draw on slides or use a built-in digital laser pointer during your presentation, which is a nice little feature. WPS Office is free to use if you don’t mind the occasional annoying advertisement.

Zoho Show is one of the few reasonably good standalone PowerPoint apps. It’s not connected to an entire office suite, and it’s not a clicker or a remote desktop app. It’s an app dedicated to making presentations. It includes a bunch of stuff, including various types of charts, over 100 shapes, different formatting options, filters, animations, and other stuff. There are also templates to help you get started. It’s not quite as powerful as some competitors. At the time of this writing, the developers are still working on incorporating stuff like music into the app. However, this is an excellent alternative to Google Slides if you need a quick, free option.

While Apple's built-in Photos app lets you shuffle your stored pictures, if you want a more elaborate slideshow with choice of transitions, special effects, and background music, you'll want to download and install a slideshow app from Apple's online App Store. Most of these third-party slideshow apps work in a similar fashion. You start by selecting a theme or template for your slideshow then select which photos and videos you want to include. You can then select transitions and animations, background music, and other special effects. Best Slideshow App for Android

best slideshow app

This is a versatile video and photo slideshow app that comes with a wide range of features onboard. What’s even better is that this app lets you add music and even custom filters to your slideshows, adding more life to your presentations or photo collages.

In addition to helping you arrange photos and videos in a presentable format, Pixgram comes with a pretty decent video editor as well, so you can make all the necessary adjustments to your pictures or videos without leaving the app.

As far as music is concerned, choices may be fairly limited as they only offer a select range of online music. The video slideshows you make can be saved in formats such as 1:1, 16:9, and 9:16. Once finished, your slideshows can be sent to your friends and family.

Pixgram is a free app but is ad-supported. The app also has in-app purchases which will remove ads while also presumably including a couple of bonus features. The app is compatible with devices running Android 4.3 and up.

Similar to Pixgram, Scoompa Video and Slideshow Maker has a wide set of tools to help you extensively create and modify your slideshows. It’s as simple as choosing the pictures and videos saved on your phone’s Gallery and creating your masterpiece. This app also comes with the ability to add music from online sources, while you can also import your own audio.

There are plenty of stickers to choose from with Scoompa which add further color to your slideshow. You can also access a wide range of animated frames on this app. As you would expect, it comes with a fair share of filters as well.

The user interface is pretty easy to navigate which makes this slideshow app all the more fun to use, especially if you’re into extensive video editing and slideshows. Scoompa is a free app on the Play Store but comes with ads and in-app purchases.

3. SlidePlus

This comes from the popular team of Viva Video, and you can expect some similarities with regards to functionality, although there’s no annoying watermark from Viva Video. SlidePlus comes with a fairly simple concept, one that lets you select a bunch of photos or videos, add filters, and share them with your family.

You can also add music, although the sources are unlikely to be as extensive as Scoompa. The app comes with a wide range of slideshow preset themes to choose from, which can save a lot of time if you’re in a hurry.

All the features of the app are easy to access, which is why SlidePlus has gained significant popularity among slideshow apps. As is the case with most apps available today, SlidePlus comes with ads as well as in-app purchases. While the free version comes with a bulk of the core features, only paying users get access to additional themes and content within the app. SlidePlus will work on phones with Android 4.3 or higher.

It’s hard to leave Google from any list of modern-day apps, and that can be said about slideshows as well. Slides is a fairly simple online tool, which has also been available in the form of an app for quite some time. Similar to mobile apps for Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and so on, Slides can sync with your Google account and save progress between devices.

In terms of features, Google Slides is a service that can be used by practically everyone. It can be used to edit existing presentations, create new ones, or even explore some slides for inspiration.

One of my favorite features of Slides is its ability to present slides when you’re in a video call, making it extremely convenient for long-distance presentations. The app can also sync with your calendar to help you join pending video calls without leaving the app. This app can be used with existing Powerpoint files as well.

The best part of all is that Slides is a free download on the Play Store and is devoid of ads or in-app purchases. Your search for the best slideshow app just got a lot easier.

5. Microsoft PowerPoint

One of the early names in the slideshow business was Microsoft with its iconic PowerPoint software. This file extension is so popular that it is used even today (pptx), and is the standard format for most presentations around the world. So naturally, it makes sense to have the PowerPoint app on your phone.

However, unlike Google Slides, Microsoft’s Android app comes with a bunch of caveats. For starters, you will need an Office365 subscription for advanced features, although most users can get started with this app using a free Microsoft account. This will let you edit or create new documents.

However, if you already have an Office365 subscription, we cannot recommend Microsoft PowerPoint highly enough. It’s particularly impressive if you’re using a tablet with a 10-inch display or bigger as you get the additional real estate to edit your documents. Collaboration features work just as seamlessly as it does on the desktop or web version of Powerpoint.

This app is a free download on the Play Store and has in-app purchases. There are no ads. Given some software limitations, Microsoft Powerpoint will only work on smartphones running Android 6.0 and up.

6. Photo SlideShow Maker

Now that we’ve discussed a bunch of professional apps, let’s talk about some apps that can be used by everyone. This app does pretty much what you expect from a slideshow maker, and does it with relative ease. It offers more than 18 themes to choose from, so you don’t need to customize and make your own themes for an upcoming slideshow.

Users can add music from a number of sources, which certainly adds to the customization aspect. It’s worth pointing out that this app can only make slideshows out of photos, and not videos. This limits its functionality to a certain extent. However, it’s certainly a good option for those willing to check out a photo slideshow maker .

Once you have your desired slideshow, you can share it instantly with your friends and family using social media apps. Your slideshows can also be saved to the Gallery for easy perusal at a later date.

This app is free to download on the Play Store and is ad-supported. Since there are no in-app purchases here, users probably won’t be able to remove ads. The app requires phones/tablets running Android 4.1 and higher.

OWb2vgx8gbhiaQ1JXm401tql0evvmDzdOvVMzXQX1WTKYR8i36kn9qluY2j4muChuw=s360 rw

This is a versatile photo and video slideshow creator app that comes with a variety of features. There’s the ability to add cinematic effects to your slideshows as well, something that isn’t possible on a lot of other apps.

This is an excellent app to make video slideshows of your family trips or of a recent event that you want to cherish for a long time. When you’ve chosen from a wide range of filters and other cool effects to add, you can save the slideshow and share it around with your peers.

Although the app is free to download, the company also offers a subscription service called MoShow VIP which unlocks plenty of additional styles and also the ability to save your videos in HD quality or in 16:9 widescreen format. The inclusion of these features certainly makes this one of the best slideshow app out there.

Fortunately, the app has no ads but there are in-app purchases for the aforementioned subscription. This app works on phones and tablets running Android 5.0 and above.

8. Slideshow Creator

This slideshow maker app lets you choose up to 30 pictures at a time, giving you more options for your slideshow. Further, the speed and the frequency of photo visibility can be extensively controlled. The app has a healthy collection of music while you can also add audio from your phone or SD card.

The slideshows are saved on your default storage location and can be edited in the future if required. While it doesn’t bring anything extraordinary to the table, it’s a decent alternative to the other apps we’ve discussed in this article.

Slideshow Creator can be downloaded for free as long as you’re fine with advertisements. An in-app purchase will remove the ads for good. This app will work on devices running Android 4.4 and up.

One Comment

Thanks for these awesome suggestions for creating a slideshow, a video format. Is there available a photo file show app, one that doesn’t require a video creation? I want to show picture files, from a thumb drive without creating a video.

Any suggestions? Thanks for your thoughts.

Voice Notes + Dictation

If you prefer speaking over writing, it may be more effective for you to plan your speech verbally rather than writing an outline. Instead of going through the motions of sitting with a blank screen or a sheet of paper and planning your speech as if you would an essay, stand, sit or wander around while you record yourself planning what you want to say. This allows you to figure out what points sound natural to you, which ones you have a hard time explaining, which transitions need to be smoother, etc.

Record yourself using transcription apps to give yourself a document of your thoughts. If you do this multiple times, you can compare notes and determine what points and transitions you should incorporate into your final outline.

Here are two apps to start with:

  • Voice Notes (Android) This is one of the highest-rated free transcription apps for Android.

public speaking apps

  • Dragon Anywhere (iOS) With this app, you can “easily dictate documents of any length, edit, format and share them directly from your iPhone or iPad — whether visiting clients, a job site, or your local coffee shop.” If you want perfectly accurate transcriptions of your speech outlines to keep, use to create slides, etc., consider investing in a transcription app such as Dictate2Us . In anywhere from 1-48 hours, you can have a professional transcribe your speech with perfect accuracy.

public speaking apps

Pro-Tip: Check out my article on the Science of Public Speaking to learn about a tested and proven speech structure that you can use to guide your outlining process.

Metronome Your Pace

One of the most challenging public speaking habits to overcome is speaking too quickly . If your natural pace is already fast, it can be difficult to tell you are talking too rapidly unless you are told and/or you see people’s confused faces.

A clear, conversational pace is between 110 and 160 words per minute .

When nervous or excited, it is easy to go upward of 200 words per minute .

While most people can comprehend words at the nervous or excited speed, it takes extra cognitive effort that your audience may not want to invest, prompting them to give in to their distracted thoughts. Speaking too quickly also can cause you to be perceived as nervous and lacking in confidence – regardless of whether you are – because it sounds as though  you’re trying to rush through your speech as fast as you can, so you can get out of the spotlight.

  • Try the app Metronome Beats for Android and iOS . This app tracks your pace in real-time to show you when you’re speaking too quickly. Practice your speeches with this app until you are maintaining a pace within the 110-160 word per minute sweet spot.

public speaking apps

Pro-tip : If you’re looking to pursue a public speaking career or a job that requires you to give frequent presentations , I recommend practicing with this app before your next big speech.  You don’t have to do anything serious–you could record yourself telling your dog about your day, sharing your thoughts aloud or when you’re having a casual conversation. The more often you are aware of your fast-talking tendencies and are able to correct your pace in the moment, the easier it will be to speak at the optimal rate when giving presentations in high-pressure contexts.

Um… I Think You Need this App

The biggest question I get from aspiring public speakers is “How do I get rid of my ‘ums’?!” It’s hard, but technology can help a lot here. Filler words such as “um,” “uh,” “like,” “yeah,” etc. make you appear lacking in confidence and detracts from the power of your message.

  • Luckily the app, Ummo, available for iOS can help you eliminate filler words from your vocabulary. The app tracks the amount of “ums” and other words you select for it so you’re aware how frequently filler words come up. And you can track your progress as you reduce the amount of filler words you say.

public speaking apps

If you have recordings of any of your speeches or presentations, I highly recommend playing the video for the Ummo app. For example, I played a portion of my TEDx talk for Ummo, and here were the results:

public speaking apps

For my TEDx Talk, I was speaking just under the normal conversational pace (good), and I had 76% clarity (okay). I used one filler in this portion, and many more when I played the entire talk. This helped me self-diagnose some potential problem areas .

Pro-Tip : Most people use filler words because they need a moment to think before they continue speaking. Taking a momentary break is fine, but train yourself to replace your filler words with pauses or a deep breath. This is incredibly important for vocal resonance. Watch this video to find out why you should replace ‘ums’ with breaths.

Fight Speaking Impairments

If you’re a non-native English speaker or struggle with speech impairments, your ability to speak clearly may reduce the power of your message and/or limit your ability to secure paid or voluntary speaking gigs. However, your voice deserves to be heard and there is an app that can help increase the vocal accuracy of your speaking.

Created by two international engineering students at Drexel University, Orai records your speaking and gives you action-oriented feedback to improve your pronunciation, pauses and other speaking elements. This app is available on both Android and iOS .

public speaking apps

Pro-Tip : If you’re a non-native speaker and/or struggle with speaking impairments, either only use words that you are confident in your ability to pronounce or spend extra time practicing difficult words. When speaking about technical topics in particular, you don’t want to risk losing people because they misunderstand key terms.

Use a Speaker-Friendly Timer

If you’re giving speeches at events or in other contexts where you have limited control of the setting or environment, mastering time is critical to keeping hosts happy. Speaking in hotel ballrooms or conference rooms? These rooms rarely have clocks, so you’ll need to manage your time differently. The key is knowing exactly when you need to shift from the beginning to the middle to the end of your speeches, talks and presentations.

  • Rather than setting up three different timers and getting distracted when you have to turn each one off, use the Toastmaster Timer for Android and iOS . The app uses a streetlight system to let you know when you should transition from your introduction to main discussion and from main discussion to your conclusion. It also contains pre-set recommended time breakdowns for a variety of common speech types and allows you to put in your own time measures.
  • Sometimes, I use a simple bedtime clock and have it on the podium or at the bottom of the stage. Here’s one for Android and one for iOS .

pubic speaking apps

Pro-tip : Don’t work on your timing until you have mastered your pacing. If you talk too fast, it is going to throw off your overall time and cause you to finish too soon, which is extra terrible for paid speaking events. If you’re paid to speak for 60-minutes, your audience will expect 60-minutes of content! However, if you can slow your speaking pace by the time the event arrives, you’ll have more flexibility in flowing through your content with ease and control.

Calm Your Pre-Stage Jitters

Often it is the moments while you wait to begin your talk that your nerves reach their peak and threaten to derail you. These next apps contain short, guided meditations, stress-coping tips and relaxation exercises to help you feel calm and confident:

  • Confident Public Speaking (Android)
  • Public Speaking with Andrew Johnson (iOS)

public speaking apps

Both of these apps contain exercises in different time frames that you can use both to calm your nerves during practice sessions and to minimize last minute stage-fright.

Pro-Tip : If you struggle to get your nerves under control, join a public speaking group like Toastmasters to learn how to be comfortable with public speaking before taking risks on pursuing important or paid gigs.

Hi, It is great article. I normally watch your videos on public speaking and great fan of how you explain audience on various aspects of body language and voice etc. I was going through the content on this article and came across the app “Ummo” you suggested to reduce the words like “umm” etc. I tried searching this app and didn’t find any. Could you please suggest any app to check the filler words during speech? Free one preferably. Thank you.

How to use AI to create a PowerPoint presentation

Using AI to create a PowerPoint presentation involves leveraging tools and technologies that can automate certain aspects of the presentation creation process. Here’s a general guide on how to use AI to create a PowerPoint presentation.

  • Text generation : Use natural language processing (NLP) models to generate text content for your slides. GPT-3 or similar models can help create coherent and contextually relevant content. OpenAI’s API or other NLP APIs can be integrated for this purpose.
  • Data analysis : If your presentation involves data, consider using AI tools to analyze and interpret data. Tools like Microsoft Excel have built-in features for data analysis, and you can use Python libraries like Pandas and Matplotlib for more advanced data processing.
  • Image selection : AI algorithms can assist in selecting relevant and high-quality images for your slides. Tools like Google’s Vision AI or Adobe Stock can help in image recognition and recommendation.
  • Design assistance : Some tools, like Beautiful.ai, use AI to suggest design layouts and color schemes based on the content you input. They can automate the design process to make your slides visually appealing.
  • Speech-to-text : Utilize speech-to-text technology to convert spoken words into written text. You can use this for creating speaker notes or captions for your slides. Google’s Speech-to-Text API is an example of a service that can perform this task.
  • Language translation : If your audience speaks different languages, AI translation services, such as Centus , can help you translate your presentation content. Google Translate API is an example of a tool that provides this functionality.
  • Grammar and spell check : AI-powered proofreading tools like Grammarly or ProWritingAid can assist in ensuring your text is free of grammatical errors and spelling mistakes.
  • Content outline : Use AI to generate an outline or structure for your presentation based on the key points you want to cover. This can help in organizing your thoughts before creating the actual slides.

Before diving head first into assembling your slides, there are a series of creative best practices and presentation ideas that will help you get started without PowerPoint. Here are a few of them:

  • We remember 10% of what we read, 20% of what we hear, 30% of what we see, 50% of what we listen to, and look at 70% of what we say and 90% of what we do. So, if you really want to be unforgettable, you have to make your audience take action .
  • Data and statistics can help you build trust and credibility, sure, but emotional communication is what will really ensure engagement.
  • Rely on videos, gifs, interactive infographics, external content, and interactivity with pop-up windows to give movement and dynamism to your slides.
  • It has been demonstrated that our brain lights up like a Christmas tree when we’re listening to stories. Leverage this in your presentation by using more storytelling .
  • It’s ok to be creative, but when it comes to fonts, it’s better to pick an elegant, simple, and readable font. Avoid handwritten or script typefaces and go for something that everybody can read without getting a headache.
  • Remember: One slide, one idea, one sentence . Avoid long paragraphs and texts with small fonts because if your audience is focused on reading, they won’t be able to listen to what you’re saying.
  • Fantasy and textured backgrounds are cool, but they’re also the greatest enemies of easy reading. Instead, go for white or solid color backgrounds .
  • Apply the 5x7x7 rule . Titles shall be no longer than 5 words. Paragraphs shall not use more than 7 lines. Lines shall not be constituted by more than 7 words.
  • Numbered lists are more likely to catch your audience’s attention than regular bullet points.
  • You are the number 1 visual element of your presentation.

When you have all this figured out, you can go ahead and start drafting your presentation!

5 Of The Best Apps To Create And Edit Presentations On Android Devices

woman showing presentation on phone

Whether you're attending school or are part of the corporate world, you're likely no stranger to presentations. They're a staple in both academic and professional settings as they're one of the best ways to share ideas with your class, client, or higher-ups. Normally, you'd rely on your computer to create your presentations, but it isn't exactly convenient for on-the-fly edits. After all, you can't just open your laptop as you're running to class or on an elevator on the way to a board meeting. You'd need something more portable for last-minute tweaks like adding speaker notes or changing the image caption in your slides.

Thankfully, you're not without options as there's a plethora of apps on the Play Store designed to help you whip up or polish presentations right from your Android device. What's even better is that some of these apps don't require you to be online, so you can stay productive anytime, anywhere. We've narrowed down the search and came up with five of the best presentation apps for Android you need to try.

Google Slides

Google Slides sample presentation

If you're already in the Google ecosystem and using apps like Drive, Meet, and Calendar,  Google Slides is one of the top presentation apps for you. One of its main draws is its seamless interconnectivity with other Google products. Create a presentation in the Slides app, and it will pop up in Drive automatically. Punch in your Google Meet meeting ID, and you can show your presentation directly in Slides -– no need to install the Meet app itself. Connect Slides with your Calendar, and you can also start presenting your Slides file for a scheduled meeting in Meet. Another nifty presentation feature of Slides is its live Q&A session that allows you to display questions on the screen as you go.

Editing and creating presentations from scratch is a breeze in Slides, too. There are several Slides templates to get you started, along with a handful of themes and layouts you can switch to depending on your style and content. Slides comes with all the standard formatting options at your disposal, including font styles, sizes, colors, and emphasis (e.g., bold, italics, underline). Just like in other Google products like Docs and Sheets, Slides lets you leave comments and enable offline use for certain files.

Google Slides won't cost you a dime — all you need is a Google account. The downside, however, is that the Android app has limited font styles and doesn't let you add slide transitions. For those extras, you'll need to open your presentation in the web app on a computer.

Microsoft Powerpoint

PowerPoint sample presentation

Microsoft PowerPoint is most people's go-to presentation platform, and for good reason. The mobile app mirrors the look and functionality of its desktop and web counterparts, so you won't have a hard time navigating and using the platform. You'll find nearly all the editing tools you'd expect from the desktop and web apps, including layout adjustments, text formatting, drawing capabilities, themes, transitions, animations, and review and view modes for inserting comments and notes. Even the handy search functionality is featured in the mobile app. PowerPoint also syncs to your OneDrive in real-time (provided you're connected to the internet), making it pretty easy to switch editing between your phone and computer.

Similar to desktop and web apps, the PowerPoint mobile app allows you to present directly on your device in full-screen, complete with extra presentation aids. There's an ink tool for live annotations that you can choose to keep in the file like drawings. The app also offers a button to display a blank screen, a handy tool for Q&A sessions, or when you're using PowerPoint for quizzes and need to temporarily hide questions from students.

Downloading the PowerPoint mobile app is free, but there's a catch: if you're using a free personal account, you can only view presentations you've previously made using the desktop/web app. You can't create a new presentation or edit existing ones without subscribing to a premium plan first.

WPS sample presentation

One of the affordable alternatives for Microsoft Word , WPS Office comes complete with a presentation maker and editor too. What makes it stand out from other presentation apps is its extensive collection of templates, sorted into neat categories like education, business, nature, minimal, work report, album, and medical. You can choose from at least 70 templates for education-related presentations, 40 templates for business presentations, and 30 templates for work reports, most of which are free to edit. Speaking of editing, WPS Office includes most of the standard tools you need. There are text styling features, transitions, animations, and layout options. You can also insert different extra content like a picture, background music, audio, video, shape, table, and chart into your slides.

On the other hand, WPS Office's presentation tools are beyond the basics. You can opt to auto-play your presentation for convenience, selectively hide or show certain slides, and annotate the slides with the ink tool. Another handy presentation feature is the PPT Recorder which allows you to record your presentation in full-screen, complete with audio and ink annotations. There's also a Miracast option right within the app, so you can readily cast the presentation to a bigger screen.

WPS Office is free to download and use, but you do need to sign into an account to create a presentation. If you feel like the free account is too basic, feel free to upgrade to WPS Pro which comes with extra features like document merging, image-to-PDF converter, PDF editor, document recovery, and bigger cloud space.

Canva sample presentation

While you probably know Canva as a free photo editing app for Android, it's actually an excellent platform for creating and editing presentations on mobile as well. However, you'll notice it doesn't quite echo the vibe of Google Slides, PowerPoint, or WPS Office as its interface is a world away from the three (but you really won't need to spend days getting the hang of it, thanks to its intuitive and user-friendly design). Canva's customizable templates are also different from other presentation apps not only because they come in varied styles (e.g., elegant, corporate, pastel), themes (e.g., game, brainstorm, quiz), and colors but also because you can pick from more than one size (16:9, 4:3, or mobile-first).

Another thing that sets Canva apart is its app integrations. There are apps that allow you to create a QR code, use photos from Pixabay or Pexels, turn a photo into an anime-style graphic, and even translate text all within Canva. Beyond the typical photos and videos, Canva also lets you insert other fancy elements like AI-generated images, pre-made graphics, and charts into your presentation without needing to import them from your local storage. And yes, you can also run your presentation straight from the app. All of these neat features, however, are only accessible when you're connected to the internet. You can't use Canva offline.

Canva is free, but there's a Pro tier for those looking for other advanced features like image background remover, file resizer, and access to Pro templates.

Presentation Creator

Presentation Creator sample presentation

Presentation Creator is similar to Canva in several ways, especially when it comes to user interface and features. Moving away from the familiar style of traditional presentation apps like PowerPoint or Google Slides, its UI leans more towards the feel of a photo editor. Its features also resemble that of photo editors, much like Canva. You'll find an element tab featuring dozens of graphics and line drawings, a text tab allowing you to add simple text, text within graphics, or AI-generated content, and a video tab letting you insert videos from YouTube, Google Photos, or your gallery. There's also an images tab providing you access not only to stock photos but also pictures from your storage and third-party sources like Facebook, Google Photos, and Google Drive.

Another nifty thing about Presentation Creator is that you can download your slides as JPG, PNG, or PDF, with options to use a transparent background if you prefer. Like other presentation apps, you can also present your slides within Presentation Creator. However, the presentation tools are pretty basic, with only the option to display the slides full screen and show or hide the next slides.

You only need to sign up for an account to use Presentation Creator, but to access more features like more stock images, background remover, AI content writer, and PDF editor, among many others, you need to upgrade to the Pro+.

Prezi works differently then traditional presentation apps that we saw earlier above. Instead of showing slides one by one, Prezi will show the entire presentation as a video where different parts will be zoomed in. This creates an interesting effect. The animation effect is pretty cool.

Because Prezi is also on your smartphone, you don’t have to turn back and look at the screen every now and then. Just glance at your phone to view the slide, and slide notes, and carry on. Other features like sharing and collaborating are all there. Pricing begins at $5 per month.

Presentation Apps for Android and iOS

If you are looking for an app that’s simple to use and gets the job done, Google Slides is a great choice. It’s got everything you need and is completely free. If you need a little more control and some extra tools with cross-platform capabilities and desktop clients, Microsoft PowerPoint is the best. Hardcore Apple users should go for Keynote because it’s got killer animations. Haiku Deck got the largest collection of stock photos and connects with every social media site out there.

The best presentation software in 2024

These powerpoint alternatives go beyond the basics..

Hero image with logos of the best presentation software

The latest presentation apps have made it easier than ever to format slides and create professional-looking slideshows without giving off a "this is a template" vibe. Even standard PowerPoint alternatives have updated key features to make it easier than ever to collaborate and create presentations quickly, so you can spend more time prepping for your actual presentation.

If, like me, you've used Google Slides unquestioningly for years, it's a whole new world out there. The newest crop of online presentation tools go way beyond the classic slideshow experience, with new features to keep your audience's attention, streamline the creation process with AI, and turn slide decks into videos and interactive conversations.

I've been testing these apps for the past few years, and this time, I spent several days tinkering with 25 of the top presentation software solutions out there to bring you the best of the best.

The best presentation software

What makes the best presentation app, how we evaluate and test apps.

When looking for the best presentation apps, I wanted utility players. After all, slideshows are used for just about everything, from pitch decks and product launches to class lectures and church sermons. With that in mind, here's what I was looking for:

Pre-built templates. The best presentation tools should have attractive, professional-looking templates to build presentations in a hurry.

Sharing and collaboration options. Whether you plan to share your webinar slides later, or you just want to collaborate with a coworker on a presentation, it should be easy to share files and collaborate in real-time.

Flexibility and customization options. Templates are great, but top presentation apps should enable you to customize just about everything—giving you the flexibility to build exactly what you need.

Affordability. Creating compelling presentations is important, but you shouldn't have to bust your budget to make it happen. With capable free tools on the market, affordability is a top consideration.

Standalone functionality. There's no reason to use multiple tools when one can do it all, so I didn't test any apps that require and work on top of another presentation app like PowerPoint or Google Slides.

Familiar, deck-based interface. For our purposes here, I only tested software that uses slides, with the familiar deck-based editor you expect from a "presentation" tool (versus, for example, a video creation app).

Beyond that, I also looked for presentation apps that brought something unique to the table—features above and beyond what you can get for free from a legacy solution like PowerPoint or Google Slides.

Here's what my testing workflow looked like:

I went through any onboarding or guided tutorials.

I created a new deck, scanning through all available templates, noting how well-designed they were (and which were free versus paid).

I added new slides, deleted slides, edited text and images, and played around with other content types.

I changed presentation design settings, like color schemes and background images.

I reviewed and tested the sharing and collaboration options.

I tested out presenter view (when available).

After my first round of testing, I went back into the top performers to test any unique or niche features, like AI, brand settings, and interactive content. With that, these are the best presentation apps I found—each one really brings something different or radically easy to the table.

Canva, our pick for the best free presentation app

Canva pros:

Excellent free plan

Tons of amazing templates for all use cases

Feature-rich

Canva cons:

The AI tools aren't groundbreakingly useful

Canva offers one of the most robust free plans of all the presentation apps I tested. The app delays account creation until after you've created your first design, so you can get started building your presentation in seconds. Choose from an almost overwhelming number of beautiful templates (nearly all available for free), including those designed specifically for education or business use cases.

Anyone who's accidentally scrolled too far and been bumped to the next slide will appreciate Canva's editor interface, which eliminates that problem altogether with a smooth scroll that doesn't jump around. Choose from a handful of preset animations to add life to your presentations, or browse the library of audio and video files available to add. And Canva also has a number of options for sharing your presentation, including adding collaborators to your team, sharing directly to social media, and even via QR code.

Present directly from Canva, and let audience members submit their questions via Canva Live. Once you share a link to invite audience members to your presentation, they can send questions for you to answer. As the presenter, you'll see them pop up in your presenter view window, so you can keep the audience engaged and your presentation clear. Alternatively, record a presentation with a talking head bubble—you can even use an AI presenter here—to share remotely.

Canva pricing: Free plan available; paid plans start at $120/year for 1 user and include additional features like Brand Kit, premium templates and stock assets, and additional AI-powered design tools.

Beautiful.ai pros:

True AI design

No fussing around with alignment

Still allows for customization

Beautiful.ai cons:

No free plan

If you're like me, editing granular spacing issues is the absolute worst part of building a presentation. Beautiful.ai uses artificial intelligence to take a lot of the hassle and granular design requirements out of the presentation process, so you can focus on the content of a presentation without sacrificing professional design. If I needed to make presentations on a regular basis, this is the app I'd use.

Many apps have recently added AI design features, but Beautiful.ai has been doing it for years—and they've perfected the experience of AI design, ensuring the tool's reign as the most streamlined and user-friendly option for AI design.

The editor is a little different from most presentation apps, but it's still intuitive—and you'll start off with a quick two-minute tutorial. When creating a new slide, scroll through "inspiration slides" to find a layout you like; once you choose, the app will pull the layout and automatically adapt it to match the design of the rest of your presentation.

With 10 themes, several templated slides, over 40 fully-designed templates, and more than 20 different color palettes to choose from, Beautiful.ai strikes a perfect balance between automation and customization.

While Beautiful.ai doesn't offer a free plan, paid plans are reasonably priced and offer sharing and collaboration options that rival collab-focused apps like Google Slides. And speaking of Google, you can connect Beautiful.ai with Google Drive to save all your presentations there.

Note: I re-tested the generative AI feature (called DesignerBot) this year. It's great for adding individual slides to an existing presentation—automatically choosing the best layout and matching the design to the rest of the deck—but as with most other apps, it struggled to pull in relevant images.

Beautiful.ai pricing: Plans start at $12/month for unlimited slides, AI content generation, viewer analytics, and more. Upgrade to a Team plan for $40/user/month to get extra collaboration and workspace features and custom brand controls.

Prezi pros:

Doesn't restrict you to standard presentation structure

Lots of customization options

Prezi Video lets you display a presentation right over your webcam video

Prezi cons:

Steep learning curve

Struggling to squeeze information into a basic, linear presentation? Give Prezi a try. Unlike nearly all other presentation apps on the market, Prezi Present doesn't restrict the structure of your presentation to a straight line. The editor focuses on topics and subtopics and allows you to arrange them any way you want, so you can create a more conversational flow of information.

With the structural flexibility, you still get all the same customization features you expect from top presentation software, including fully-editable templates. There's a learning curve if you're unfamiliar with non-linear presentations, but templates offer a great jumping-off point, and Prezi's editor does a good job of making the process more approachable.

Plus, Prezi comes with two other apps: Prezi Design and Prezi Video. Prezi Video helps you take remote presentations to a new level. You can record a video where the presentation elements are displayed right over your webcam feed. Record and save the video to share later, or connect with your video conferencing tool of choice (including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet) to present live.

Prezi's generative AI feature works ok, but it's more useful as a wireframe. When I asked it to create a presentation about the Stanley Cup Playoffs, for example, the resulting content read a lot like a student writing a term paper in the broadest strokes possible to avoid doing any actual research.

Powtoon pros:

Timing automatically changes based on the content on the slide

Can toggle between slideshow and video

Can orient presentation as horizontal, vertical, or square

Powtoon cons:

Limited free plan

Powtoon makes it easy to create engaging videos by orienting the editor around a slide deck. Editing a Powtoon feels just like editing a presentation, but by the time you finish, you have a professional video.

You can edit your slides at any time, and when you hit play, a video plays through your deck—the feel is almost like an animated explainer video. Each slide includes the animations you choose and takes up as much time as is needed based on the content on the slide. Powtoon figures the timing automatically, and you can see in the bottom-right of the editor how much time is used on your current slide versus the total presentation. If you ever want to present as a slide deck, just toggle between Slideshow and Movie.

You'll likely need to subscribe to a paid plan to get the most out of Powtoon—like creating videos longer than three minutes, downloading them as MP4 files, and white-labeling your presentations—but doing so won't break the bank. Plus, you'll unlock tons of templates complete with animations and soundtracks.

One of my favorite Powtoon features is the ability to orient your video: you can choose horizontal orientation (like a normal presentation) or opt for vertical (for mobile) or square (for social media). When your presentation is ready, you can publish straight to YouTube, Wistia, Facebook Ads, and any number of other locations.

Pitch, our pick for the best presentation software for collaborating with your team

Pitch pros:

Google levels of collaboration

Assign slides to specific team members

Excellent generative AI feature

Pitch cons:

User interface is a little different than you're used to

Need to collaborate on presentations with your team? Pitch is a Google Slides alternative that gets the job done. As far as decks go, Pitch includes all the beautifully-designed templates, customizability, and ease of use you expect from a top-notch presentation tool. But the app really shines when you add your team.

The right-hand sidebar is all about project management and collaboration: you can set and update the status of your deck, assign entire presentations or individual slides to team members, plus comment or add notes. Save custom templates to make future presentations even easier and faster.

You can also invite collaborators from outside your company to work with you on individual decks. And if you opt for a paid plan, Pitch introduces workspace roles, shared private folders, and version history.

Pitch also offers one of the most impressive generative AI features on this list. It still struggles to pull in relevant images, but I found the AI-generated written content and design to be top-notch.

Gamma pros:

Creates fully fleshed-out presentations from a prompt

Conversational chatbot-like experience

Can still manually edit the presentation

Gamma cons:

Not as much granular customization

I tested a lot of apps claiming to use AI to up your presentation game, and Gamma's conversational AI features were head and shoulders above the crowd.

Simply give the app a topic—or upload an outline, notes, or any other document or article—approve the outline, and pick a theme. The app will take it from there and create a fully fleshed-out presentation. It's far from perfect, but Gamma produces a very useful jumping-off point. (Last year, it was by far the best, but this year, other apps are catching up.)

Here's the key: Gamma is much more geared toward the iterative, chatbot experience familiar to ChatGPT users. Click on the Edit with AI button at the top of the right-hand menu to open the chat, and you'll see suggested prompts—or you can type in your own requests for how Gamma should alter the presentation.

Once you've done all you can with prompts, simply close the chat box to manually add the finishing touches. While you do sacrifice some granular customizability in exchange for the AI features, you can still choose your visual theme, change slide layouts, format text, and add any images, videos, or even app and web content.

Mentimeter, our pick for the best presentation software for audience engagement

Mentimeter pros:

Tons of audience engagement features

Simple for participants to interact

Mentimeter cons:

Less granular customizability

Bit of a learning curve

If you need to engage with an audience during your presentation, Mentimeter makes that easy. The app is designed around interactive elements like quizzes, surveys, Q&As, sliders, and more (even a Miro whiteboard!).

Each of these is included in a number of different, professional-looking templates, so you can build a fully interactive presentation super quickly.

When it's time to present, your audience members can scan the QR code with their phone cameras or type in the URL and access code to participate. There's one code per presentation (so they won't have to do this on every slide), which gives access to each slide as you move through the presentation.

There are two main drawbacks to this one, though. First, there's a bit of a learning curve and less familiar editing interface (but I found it pretty easy to learn with some practice). The other drawback is that you can't get as granular with the visual customization as you can with many other presentation tools.

Tome, our pick for the best presentation software for generative AI

Top-tier generative AI features

Simple, customizable templates

Intuitive doc-style editor

There's definitely a learning curve

Tome is one of the new additions to this list that I'm most excited about. If you're looking for generative AI that just genuinely works , it's definitely worth a look. The editor is a bit more stripped down than most presentation apps but intuitive nonetheless—it's almost a cross between your standard deck editor and a Notion-style doc.

To generate an AI deck, click Generate with AI in the top right, and either write your own prompt or choose from the example prompts that cover a handful of common use cases, like sales enablement and company pitches. Edit or approve the suggested outline, then generate the full presentation.

From there, you can edit each slide as a doc via the right-hand menu—without limits on how much information you can include. During the presentation, you simply size down any slides that take up more than the standard amount of space. It's super simple but somehow feels revolutionary in a presentation app.

What about the old standbys?

You might notice a few major presentation players aren't on this list, including OGs Microsoft PowerPoint, Apple Keynote, and Google Slides. These apps are perfectly adequate for creating basic presentations, and they're free if you have a Windows or Mac device or a Google account.

I didn't include them on the list because the presentation space has really developed in the last several years, and after testing them out, I found these behemoths haven't kept pace. If they weren't made by Microsoft/Apple/Google, I might not even be mentioning them. They're pretty basic tools, they're behind the curve when it comes to templates (both quantity and design), and they don't offer any uniquely valuable features like robust team collaboration, branding controls, video, and so on.

In any case, if you're reading this, you're probably looking for an alternative that allows you to move away from one of the big 3, and as the presentation platforms featured above show, there's a ton to gain—in terms of features, usability, and more—when you do.

What about PowerPoint and Google Slides add-ons?

While I focused my testing on tools with full feature-sets—those that can serve as your sole presentation tool—there are a ton of add-on tools you can use atop big name tools like PowerPoint and Google Slides.

The best presentation apps for android.

best app to make presentation on phone

Desktop computers have become a rare commodity these day and although laptops are holding on to the last shred of anything that doesn’t resemble a smart device, it might not be long before they might be replaced for good. Even modern laptops have begun to resemble smart devices, as hybrid models aim to replace the conventional laptop.

Whether you are a PC user or someone who favours Mac, the chances are you need to be ready for a world ruled by Android. In fact, many PC and Mac users already own an Android device.

To help presenters prepare for things to come, we have compiled a list of the best presentation apps for Android. This list consists of not only apps that can be used for making and presenting your slide decks but also apps which can help you turn your Android device into a presentation remote or a tool for remotely delivering your presentations.

[This article contains affiliate links. For more information, see our disclosures here .]

1) PowerPoint for Android

According to some estimates there are 30 million PowerPoint presentations delivered per day. It can be safely assumed that most presenters globally use PowerPoint for delivering their slides. Even many who use alternative apps, usually make use of applications which support PPT files. This is why PowerPoint for Android is number one of our list of best presentation apps for Android.

While users have complained about the need for an Office 365 account to use the PowerPoint app for Android , however, there is no denying the fact that it is indeed the real deal when it comes to Android presentation apps. PowerPoint for Android supports many features that many so called PowerPoint alternatives on the Play Store have failed to provide. This includes features like: support for PowerPoint charts; transitions and animations; and integration with SharePoint and major cloud storage services.

You can access files from not only your Android device but also via OneDrive, Google Drive, box, DropBox and SharePoint. Furthermore, you can create, edit and present presentations right from your Android device.

PowerPoint for Android is not without its limitations, as it is not as powerful as its desktop version. Unfortunately, you cannot do much with the app unless you are logged in with an Office 365 account.

If you’re wondering why would you use a paid app instead of the dozens of free alternatives on the Google Play Store, the answer is simple. PowerPoint for Android not only provides support for many native features that other apps can’t provide but also enables making high-quality slides; something a professional presenter desperately needs to have.

Furthermore, your imported PowerPoint files will not have any missing charts, animations or pixelated images when you open them on Android. Moreover, you can safely use PowerPoint for Android for presenting your slides by connecting your Android device to a projector using a PC, Chromecast, Miracast, etc.

2) Google Slides

If you don’t want to pay for an Office 365 subscription, Google Slides is the next best alternative. What started as a cloud based imitation of PowerPoint has come a long way. While Google Slides has a long way to go, as explained in our post about Google Slides Vs PowerPoint ; it gives adequate options for making a good looking presentation.

With the Google Slides app for Android you can create, edit and present your presentations from an Android device. Furthermore, it supports PowerPoint files, which can help you use this app as a free alternative to the Office 365 subscription based PowerPoint for Android app.

If you’ve never used the web based version of Google Slides or haven’t tried it since its rebranding, it has come a long way. A few years back I would not have fancied importing a PowerPoint presentation to Google Slides but all that has now changed. The imported PowerPoint files have much better editability and few slides (if any) get botched after import.

The only downside of using Google Slides is that you can’t do much without internet connectivity. For example, you need online connectivity for making a presentation. This can be a buzzkill for people looking for an app they can use without keeping their mobile data packages on when making slides on the go.

Needless to say, Google Slides comes integrated with Google Drive and gives you access for your presentation files via your Google account. While Google Slides is no PowerPoint, however, it can help you get the job done with all basic functions a presenter might need. Furthermore, it’s also a good enough option for viewing and editing PowerPoint files for free on an Android device.

3) WPS Office+PDF

I have been using WPS Office for as long as I have owned an Android device. This is one of the oldest Office Suites for Android and one of the best ones available for free. With WPS Office you can create, view and edit Office files, including presentations, with support for PowerPoint files.

WPS Office also provides a number of other handy functions, such as wireless printing support for Office and PDF files, a reader-friendly mobile mode for PDF files and documents, built-in image editing functionality, track changes, etc.

It can be safely assumed that after PowerPoint for Android and Google Slides, WPS Office has the features and smooth functionality which makes it a viable Android app for creating, viewing, editing and presenting presentations.

WPS Office screenshot

4)  Polaris Office+PDF

Many Android devices come with the Polaris Viewer, which makes it possible to view MS Office files on Android devices. Polaris has many apps for Android, including separate apps for LG devices, Symantec mobility suite, and an enterprise version known as Polaris Good. Polaris Office+PDF is a free Office suite which can be used for viewing and editing MS Office files, including PowerPoint presentations.

Polaris Office also provides a number of other useful features, such as the ability to take notes with handwriting, passcode protection for documents, document sharing and commenting features, etc. Polaris Office+PDF is a free Android app, which offers in-app purchases.

Polaris Office screenshot

5) Smart Office 2

Smart Office 2 for Android is one of many Office apps which came way before Microsoft woke up from its slumber. This app is not just a mere PowerPoint alternative for Android but an entire Office suite. Smart Office 2 is a free app, which supports creating, editing, viewing, printing and sharing Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. It also provides support for viewing PDF and image files, including GIF animations ad Vector Graphics (WMF & EMF).

Smart Office 2 also enables converting Office files to PDF format, with the utility to annotate PDF files. You can use Smart Office for presenting PowerPoint and PDF presentation using your Android device. Smart Office 2 also gives templates for creating Office files, including PowerPoint presentations.

While Smart Office 2 is not as feature rich as PowerPoint for Android or Google Slides, it does serve as the poor man’s PowerPoint and can perform many basic functions you would expect in an office suite. Something that I personally find lacking in this app is the lacklustre interface and slower functionality. This is why WPS and Polaris Office are ranked higher in our list.

Smart Office 2 screenshot

Presentations aren’t necessarily supposed to be all about PowerPoint slides. There are many useful apps that can go beyond support for PPTs and actually deliver a platform which can make professional presenters stand out from the crowd. ShowPad is one such service, which makes it possible for presenters engaged in sales and marketing to deliver robust presentations on the fly.

ShowPad is a sales enablement platform. In other words, it is a service which allows bringing together all your marketing data to create custom presentations according to specific customer needs. This might include PPTs, PDF files, Word documents, videos and relevant images.

The ShowPad app for Android is an extension of the ShowPad web service, which gives a plethora of options to access sales data for presenting your sales pitch anytime, using interactive tools. ShowPad is a paid service which can be tested out using a free trial account.

Showpad

7) MightyMeeting

MightyMeeting is not your average presentation app, as it integrates web conferencing with polls, whiteboards and PowerPoint slides to provide a comprehensive platform for presenters. MightyMeeting is perfect for remote presentations and for delivering your presentation during a webinar or online conference.

Like ShowPad, MightyMeeting app for Android is an extension of a web service. You can instantly start online meetings, invite attendees and begin presenting your content using PowerPoint slides, whiteboards, videos and even conduct polls to gather opinion from meeting participants.

MightyMeeting is a paid service but you can take it for a spin using a trial account. Read a more detailed review of MightyMeeting here .

8)  AIO Remote

You might have used apps that turn your Android device into a presentation remote. And when it comes to the best Android presentation remote app, AIO Remote is a clear winner. When I first installed this app, I didn’t expect much, however, I was amazed by its smooth functionality and wide range of features.

AIO Remote can not only be used if you are presenting PowerPoint slides on your computer but even if you are using another presentation app. This is because AIO has features for controlling not just PowerPoint slides but your entire computer. With AIO Remote you can control your mouse pad, turn your Android device into a joystick, browse your PC files, control your media player, as well as create custom remotes by specifying control variables.

AIO Remote for Android is free to use and works with Windows, Mac and Linux. AIO also has a mobile version for Kindle tablets. You can connect AIO Remote via Android to your computer using a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection.

You can find a more detailed review of AIO Remote here.

AIO Remote screenshot

9) Office Remote

Office Remote is an official app by Microsoft which is meant to remotely control Office apps on PC using Android devices. Office Remote can not only control PowerPoint running on a PC but also other Office apps like Word and Excel.

Office Remote is a free app and requires Bluetooth connectivity between a PC and Android device. Like any remote control app for Android, you will require installing a desktop plugin for MS Office on your PC and the Android app for Office remote on your Android smartphone or tablet.

Office Remote screenshot

10)  AirDroid

When it comes to Android apps providing remote control, AirDroid is indeed a novelty. This is not your conventional Android remote, since it does pretty much the opposite of what AIO Remote and Office Remote Offer; i.e. you can remotely control your Android device via PC, Mac or web browser.

Now, being a presenter you might be wondering what good can AirDroid be for you? The answer is simple. AirDroid be useful to remotely accessing your Android device to Mirror it on a PC or Mac connected to a projector. Moreover, you can use it to remotely send SMS, transfer files, control your mobile camera, play and manage audio and video files, as well as transfer files to your computer without the need for wired connectivity.

In other words, whether you want to mirror your Android on a projector via computer, remotely control your Android device during a presentation or need to quickly transfer a file from your Android device to a computer, AirDroid can help you do all that. Furthermore, if you intend to share something like a WhatsApp chat, video or need to demonstrate something using your Android device, you can show it all on the big screen.

AirDroid is a free app but offers some in-app purchases.

AirDroid screenshot

The above list is meant to provide our fellow presenters with useful apps to help them use their Android devices more effectively for presenting presentations. We excluded apps which we thought were not user-friendly enough or lacked essential features.

This is why Prezi did not make it to our list. Unfortunately, Prezi currently only has a Prezi Viewer for Android and its mobile site doesn’t make it any easy to create presentations from an Android browser.

Similarly, we did not include many presentation remote apps, since the ones mentioned in this post come with comprehensive features that are hard to match by other Android apps.

If you think we missed out a presentation app for Android which should be on this list, feel free to share your thoughts via our comments section.

Some features of certain apps might require online connectivity. However, most of the apps have some kind of offline support. WP Office for instance provides complete offline support, similarly, you can connect AIO Remote via Bluetooth.

It often happens that our laptop is not with us, but for some urgent office work, we have to make a presentation from the phone itself. So for them, these editing APPs can be utilized.
