Fashion appears to satisfy two cores human demands, that of novelty and that of conformity. So, determining the role of fashion in our daily life will probably revolve around those truths. While humanity often claims to aspire to distinction, people are rarely comfortable alone. This is why they will conform to the socially accepted fashions of the day.

The Goods and Bads of Fashion While fashion may facilitate social change, it generally only modifies the accepted customs and beliefs. Its influence is never as invasive and intense as people seem to think. It mostly just provides a transition from one belief or custom to another and because it is a surface level representation, it can be readily revised.

We see this happen whenever someone who has achieved fame steps out wearing something no one else seems to be donning. Then suddenly, everyone wants to be emo, hipster, or goth. People who look like that individual briefly experience an enhanced level of prestige. Of course, that wears off as soon as someone else makes a different fashion statement that is readily embraced.

Fashion’s need for novelty is certainly one of its least attractive aspects.

People purchase an outfit, usually spending a good deal of money on it, because it is trendy at the moment. Sadly, within a very short period of time that trend can evaporate and now wearing that snapback hat is no longer the cool thing to do. The poodle skirt is out and the mini is in, but the money has already been spent. This leaves people with a deep sense of loss and a void in their pockets as they are ever striving to keep up with the fashion of the day.

Modern Youth Fashion Youth of today are most readily affected by the ever changing influence of fashion. There is a deep desire within young people to be autonomous and yet fit in. This may seem like a bit of an oxymoron, but it is the nature of young people to want to express their individuality in the way they dress while simultaneously being accepted by those who are like-minded. This is why we mentioned the need for conformity in fashion.

It is not surprising that young people are completely dependent upon the trends of the day to determine what they wear. Clothes protect the body in more than one way. Obviously, one’s attire will offer protection from the elements, but proper fashion sense will also provide a barrier to the judgmental nature young people often reveal. And, since clothing is frequently representative of one’s socio-economic stature, it is important to adhere to those norms to be seen as someone who has the means to be respected.

Recall the adage that a man is judged by his clothes. Beautiful clothes, those that are deemed in style, are often indicative of an upper level status in society. People will treat that person with a larger degree of respect and care. Therefore, it is no surprise that teenagers, and other members of the modern youth culture, are eager to make all their fashion purchases from stores found in the mall. Brand recognition is incredibly important to one’s acceptance in the upper echelon of human status.

This is Why Fashion Matters Fashion is a cultural sector that has the ability to deeply affect lives. The fashion industry is a highly visible, yet frequently overlooked, entity. People are constantly attempting to make a fashion statement. All one need do is look at magazines, malls, and other places that display ads. And, though many of the designers and celebrities who push these fashions on young people think that the kids understand the impact, the truth is, they do not.

Fashion trends and fads can often be quite detrimental to the general populace despite the innocence portrayed by those who force feed the concept to young people. It is time that we realized that these statements are philosophical and influential. And thereby, deserve the time invested to analyze, challenge, and consider what these fashions and fads are truly trying to convey. Music and fashion are the latest areas of life to become all the more intertwined. Even the big music magazines are beginning to offer fashion spreads while they profile fashion conscious performers and musicians. MTV got a special award for its influence on fashion back in the 80s. So, it’s no wonder that fashion has become a big part of what is cool and entertaining in the eyes of young people. Every teen clique has its own “ tribal markings ” based on the fashions they employ.

Sadly, children are now more actively involved in this emerging market. The market revenue has tripled in the last 20 years. And, because kids are easier to manipulate and influence, and more readily victimized by peer pressure, this is a very sensitive target market indeed. The fashion industry sees its newest audience and is certainly investing more money to market toward their young minds.

As if that isn’t dangerous enough, celebrities and their personal agendas are being given more access to the political arena. And, as people consider celebrities their idols, it is no surprise that they become easily swayed by a celebrity’s personal agenda. When super models are being beckoned by the likes of Castro for private meetings, one has to wonder just where the lines are drawn between the lure of fashion and the need for political sanctity.

In summation, fashion stands to represent what the individual wearing it believes. It shows the industry he/she is associated with and what his/culture embraces as attractive and worthy of emulation. So, a piece of attire often speaks louder than the fact that it is simply a t-shirt.

What someone wears, will often define them in the eyes of those they meet. Therefore, being certain you understand all the underlying messages within your fashion sphere is imperative prior to choosing to add those items to your wardrobe. You don’t want to give off a mixed or wrong message about what you think and believe. That’s the role of fashion in daily life and should be considered.

“The clothes we wear has become more than merely a way to cover our nakedness; instead it has also become one of the primary ways in which people express themselves.”

George K explains that fashion separates individuals from the rest. A person can introduce himself to others for who and what he is through style choices. Further, the author expounds on how fashion is a very competitive industry that depends on one’s search for identity. The author also points out that every person is unique and thus needs a distinct style to fit them. However, because of constant peer pressure and criticism, an individual’s fashion picks can’t be entirely their own. Ultimately, George K reminds the reader that it’s not just the clothes but how individuals wear and feel in them.

“…if we can do something then it is choosing the right stuff like entertainment, adventure, fashion, etc. All these things can make us happy and are also an important part of life. Fashion always attracts and it is available for all,”

Yadav considers how fashion originated from people’s traditions and cultures and became what it is today through individuals adopting each style and making it their own. In the following sections of the essay, she defines fashion and lists its importance, including how it developed new employment options and how styles speak for the wearer.

In her conclusion, she encourages everyone to choose their styles and not to mind their age. Fashion helps everyone live life to the fullest.

“Fashion is an industry based on creating a need where there is none and nowadays, due to the current recession, I can understand that fashion may not be people’s biggest concern. But we cannot qualify it as ‘trivial’ since we are surrounded by it; each new generation of customers is highly exposed to commercial influences.”

Summers gives her opinion about the book “Fashion as Communication” by Malcolm Barnard . She identifies points in the work and shares her thoughts on them. The first point being those working in the fashion industry aren’t smart. As a Fashion Marketing student, Summers vehemently disagrees with this statement and recounts her experiences to counter it. She continues to analyze Barnard’s other arguments and agrees with some of them. Summers ends her essay by highlighting that fashion is too essential in modern culture and economic organization for it to be considered “trivial.”

“…the youth cares more about what they wear and how they look which could affect their status in their peer group and meddle with their mental health. Following trends and doing what everyone is doing like a sheep is never a good idea. Fashion is there to reflect your personal style, not copying what other people think is trendy.”

User Edudwar reminds people that fashion is not simply following what’s currently trendy. Fashion is there to give people the chance to show off their individualism and personalities and not present a fake version of themselves to be accepted by society. Additionally, he mentions that youth nowadays are more sensitive to what people think of them, so some will always do everything to follow trends, even if they’re not presentable or appropriate.

“Youths of the present times have indulged themselves in so much fashion that they do not receive sufficient time for other work
The time spent on studies is being used in watching TV programmes, reading fashion articles, or even finding the recent trendy outfits on the Internet.”

The essay discusses the real effects of fashion on today’s youth. The author focuses on kids zeroing in on finding the latest style instead of caring for their studies that directly affect their future. The essay also delves into how youths of yesterday had ambitions and goals in life compared to today’s youths, who prefer to have fun rather than study hard.

Why Fashion Matters

Professor frances corner on the importance of fashion.

By Google Arts & Culture

Words by Frances Corner

Lambani Embroiderers in Sandur, Karnataka (2006) JD Centre of Art

Fashion matters. To the economy, to society and to each of us personally. Faster than anything else, what we wear tells the story of who we are – or who we want to be. But fashion is too often seen as a frivolous, vain and ephemeral industry. Many people fail to appreciate just how important and wide-reaching it really is. Globally, the industry is valued at $3 trillion. It's the second biggest worldwide economic activity for intensity of trade – employing over 57 million workers in developing countries, 80 per cent of whom are women.

Who said fashion doesn’t matter? Like most other global industries, fashion has its dark side. Exploitation of garment workers, lack of diversity, and environmental damage remain issues that the industry must do more to address and resolve. But this vast creative industry has the potential to initiate significant change. Despite its faults, one of the things fashion can do is spread an idea around very powerfully, coherently, and with the all-important 'cool' factor. One example of this is Professor Helen Storey MBE and chemistry Professor Tony Ryan's project Catalytic Clothing, which explored how textiles can be used as a catalytic surface to purify air. They designed and created the catalytic dress 'Herself', which is impregnated with a photocatalyst that uses light to break down air-borne pollution into harmless chemicals. 'Herself' toured the world raising the profile of the Catalytic Clothing project and introducing city dwellers worldwide to the notion that clothing and textiles can play a vital role in improving the urban environment, as well as the health of those who live in it.

MA Fashion Futures, 2016 (2016) by LCF London College of Fashion

This project is an illustration of how fashion is collaborating with science, engineering and technology to create a new future: one where it has a positive influence on the environment, society and our health. Clothes are vital to our most basic needs of warmth and protection, but we are beginning to see fashion's role in our health and wellbeing extend beyond this. We have already seen a bra developed with the ability to detect tumors before breast exams and mammograms, and smart socks that use temperature sensors to track diabetic health.

As electronic textiles are developed with the ability to collect and transmit data, and store and conduct energy, we can develop clothes that will help us manage the significant changes in our demographics. A baby born in the UK today is likely to live until they are 103, so we need to balance this with real quality of life. The integration of technology into the fabric of our lives will help us if clothes are easier to put on, if they can monitor our body temperature, help administer drugs or connect us more easily to our friends and family.

Cabinet Stories Silk Court Cabinet Stories Silk Court London College of Fashion

By taking the creativity and techniques of fashion and applying them to health or social issues, we are beginning to see fashion as less frivolous and more as a serious tool we can all use to make our lives better. Although the technological developments are undoubtedly exciting, there is also a human side to clothes, which is becoming increasingly relevant in a virtual age. Clothes contain memories and reflect our personality. As we all have and wear clothes, they can act as a vehicle to talk about our lives. London College of Fashion Curator Alison Moloney tapped into this potential of clothes in her exhibition ‘Cabinet Stories’, which toured a female prison, a mental health unit and a care home for the elderly. Here individuals were asked to select items of clothing that were particularly meaningful to them, and these stories and photos of the clothes became part of the exhibition.

PussyHat (2017) The Strong National Museum of Play

It's not only the wearing of clothes that can build relationships, but also the making. A great example of this is artist Whitney McVeigh’s project '1000 Coats', which will see 100 women from different backgrounds each sewing 10 coats. As part of the project there are workshops teaching women to sew, providing them with new skills whilst also encouraging them to work together as part of a community and form new partnerships. Fashion has the ability to change and shape lives through its personal connection to us all. We all have to wear clothes and every piece of clothing we buy represents a personal choice – it is this intrinsically human relationship between us and our fashion that makes it political. Whether you are wearing a knitted pink pussy hat on a march, wearing an item of dress that expresses your beliefs, or using your business to improve working conditions, fashion can play a significant role in articulating your beliefs.

What we choose to wear reflects how we view the world and how we want the world to view us. The Stone Age man with the latest shell beads , the post-war woman in Dior's New Look , the latest fashion blog recording street style as it happens – they are all tied to our very human need to express individuality. Fashion has been and always will be a constant part of our existence. Many people see fashion as ephemeral and frivolous but I see it as a creative, enterprising, multifaceted industry that is vital to our economic and personal well-being. Fashion really does matter.

Instead, individuals curate their style, blending vintage and contemporary pieces, high-end and affordable items, to create a unique aesthetic that reflects their personality and values.

The Influence of Social Media

The advent of social media has greatly democratized fashion. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok allow users to showcase their style, influencing trends on a global scale. As a result, the power to dictate fashion has shifted from designers and models to everyday individuals and influencers.

In response to growing concerns about environmental and ethical issues, sustainable fashion is gaining prominence. This movement encourages the use of eco-friendly materials, ethical production processes, and a shift towards slow fashion – buying fewer, higher quality items that last longer.

Essay: Why Fashion is Important

The Fashionisto

Published October 18, 2017

Louis Vuitton 2016 Spring Summer Backstage

Fashion is one of the most critical industries in our world today. Style has become one of the primary ways in which people express their personality and distinguish themselves from those around them. With every New Year which comes and goes, new fashions arrive on the scene, and they all endeavor to be more colorful and fashionable than those which saw last year. There’s inspiration everywhere, from online retailers like Roden Gray to printed magazines. The desire to express one was present throughout human history.

People of all ages are addicted to new trends in fashion. There is a tremendous amount of competition within the industry and also among consumers. The style is also different among different cultures and nationalities, which is why it’s so exciting when one travels to various parts of the planet to observe firsthand how people dress in those countries. Our clothes have become more than merely a way to cover our nakedness. Instead, it has also become one of the primary ways in which people express themselves.

Garments which may fit one person may not necessarily be equally suitable for someone else. And even if those clothes are fantastic designer efforts, it does not mean everyone would be equally comfortable wearing them. Different people will need different styles and designs, which will be an expression of their uniqueness and personality before they will not be comfortable wearing that specific fashion design. Human beings are complicated creatures; everyone has different desires, dreams, and objectives that they deem essential to success in their life. Fashion trends are a critical aspect of that success.

There is a lot of discrimination among human beings and also a lot of criticism. People will do everything possible to avoid such criticism. Peer pressure continues to affect people throughout their lives, and it is a powerful motivator when it comes to crucial fashion decisions. It is also true that fashion design has reached a very sophisticated level, and therefore some of the most popular models can be very costly.

It has the result that such fashion may only be accessible to affluent people. It can make it very difficult for people of average income to compete in fashion designs. Fortunately, there has been a lot of progress by fashion designers to cater to middle-income consumers. It is why there are a lot of fashion designs available, which can make it possible for less fortunate people to own still fashion designs that will be of very high quality and attractive.

There are fashion items for every season and every occasion, making it possible for people to express themselves differently depending on the specific season or time of the year. Looking at all the consumer needs that have emerged in modern times, it becomes easy to see why fashion design has become such a specialized industry.

Another aspect that deserves contemplation is the fact that there is a measure of similarity in those fashion trends which aim at the low-income person. It is going a long way in avoiding discrimination or unnecessary competition because there is a lot of similarity in the designs which aim at this consumer market. Therefore, less affluent people can avoid unwarranted discrimination and criticism because, they are dressed very similarly in many ways to their friends, colleagues, or family members.

Care should be taken to avoid fashion designs of poor quality, especially in cases where failed fashion experiments are nevertheless mass-produced and then dumped on the low-income consumer. On the other hand, some poor people cannot afford anything better, leaving her with no choice but to purchase low-quality products.

Nevertheless, an eye for detail can be a blessing because this can help a person who may only have access to low-quality fashion items to mix and match those things very efficiently so that the overall result is nonetheless beautiful. There is some truth to the statement that it’s not what you wear but how you wear it, which is the most critical issue.

Unfortunately, many people never seem to learn how to combine different fashion items correctly and adequately. Knowing which colors go together is a rare gift that some people never master. Therefore, even affluent people with access to very costly fashion items often fail to do those things justice because of a lack of understanding regarding color matching.

Many people seem to think tight clothing is more attractive than a loose-fitting dress, and then they make fools of themselves by wearing unnecessarily close-fitting clothes. It is why it is essential to have at least a basic understanding of choosing your fashion items and mixing and matching those things for the best results. Access to the most expensive fashion trends on the market is undoubtedly a benefit. Still, it’s even more important to have a basic sense of how to maximize how the wearer will display those clothes and other articles.

Clothes are also known to impact people’s moods substantially; likewise, some colors are more effective than others in putting people in a better place as far as their mindset and emotions are concerned. Every person should do at least an introductory modeling course to understand how to make the best of their free clothes and accessories. Like we said earlier, it is not so much what you are wearing but rather how you are wearing it, which will ultimately provide proof of your competence as far as fashion and personal appearance is concerned.

Introduction

Fashion is a non-verbal way of communication that conveys a lot about the person’s personality, background and style. Earlier it was exclusively the world of the affluent, celebrities and royalty. However, fashion is now within the reach of the common man, especially the youth. Besides, dress fashion is an evolution of ideas, which begins as a fad, but in course of time gets accepted in society as a style, which could be in attire, behaviour or lifestyle. Fashion is mostly associated with glamour. It makes people feel confident and bold. People can express themselves openly. Today fashion is not limited to western countries; now, every country has come out with their fashion sense, not only the clothing but the accent of that country, the living style.

Vedantu experts have crafted an essay on fashion that covers its significance and how it reflects in your personality. This essay has promoted the thought perfectly that fashion is also about carrying yourself in society without having an attractive or trendy attire.  It is about being comfortable with yourself and not being a doppelganger of another person.

Why is Fashion Important?

Fashion is important because it reflects the culture of a country. It makes our life colourful and changes our life with time. In a way it also adds variety to life, providing an opportunity in trying out something new. Fashion is not only limited to clothing or makeup but in a much broader sense includes accessories like shoes, perfume, hairstyle, mannerism, etiquette and attitude towards life. Fashion is not restricted to self-expression only but also a means of self-empowerment and confidence. It encompasses the total spectrum of human activity, which relates to a specific period. It is an outlook of life.

Fashion is how you carry yourself in society without wearing anything trendy. It is how you attempt to make yourself look flawless even without any make-up. It helps you in revealing your true identity.

Evolution of Fashion

The world of fashion is always evolving.  It is amazing to see how the different events in history have influenced and changed the way people dressed and looked throughout time. Thus long dresses, veiled headgear that was trends of the Victorian era, have been replaced with micro and mini dresses and the jeans culture associated with the modern era.

From the 1920s to the 1990s fashion just not changed in clothing but also in accessories, footwear and hairstyles. The trends of wearing hats, carrying purses, shoes and men wearing long ties and bows have been continuously changing with periods, occasions and culture.

Hairstyles also have been changing throughout time. Short boyish haircuts were popular during the 1920s to 1940s. Wigs were more popular in the 1960s and thereafter hairstyles kept changing from short to bob cut then to mid-back cut and now maintaining long hair.

Fashion Industry

As fashion evolved, the industry was formulated to manage the process for the consumers. The fashion world has given shape to a new industry, the ‘Fashion Industry’.

The fashion industry was created to design, manufacture and market clothes, footwear and accessories. Before creating the apparel industry, people made clothes for themselves. The mass production of clothing began in the mid-nineties when some creators began to make garments that did not require any fitting session with the tailors. The fashion industry in its true sense was established in the twentieth century when the neighbourhood tailors decided to become the manufacturing business.

Fashion impacting the Youth

The positive side of fashion is it enhances your life. It not only allows you to dress fashionably but also allows being independent in thinking and maintaining self-esteem. At the same time, fashion is negatively impacting the youth. It has taken up the life of the youth so much that the youngsters are highly obsessed with creating style statements at an age where they need to focus on their studies and other important aspects of life. The fashion trend has become a cult with today’s generation. They blindly try to imitate the models and celebrities without understanding the true essence of fashion.

The fashion world has given a new face to the clothing market. It has turned into a fashion industry.

Impact of fashion on teenagers

Teenagers are more cautious about their attire; they are aware of only one prevalent face of fashion.

What is the importance of fashion?

The need is therefore to strike a balance between being fashionable and wearing what suits you. The young generation needs to understand that fashion in the true sense is the attitude that you carry and just not fashionable clothes and accessories.

FAQs on Fashion Essay

1. What is the core of fashion?

Fashion is not only about wearing trendy clothes or footwear. The core of fashion lies inside the person. Fashionable core comes active when you wear something with confidence to show your choices to the world. And that is the only thing to make fashion a trend from time to time. Vedantu experts, after a detailed study, have explained this stuff, and that’s what makes an essay on fashion a complete package to deliver to the audience.

2. How is fashion impacting today’s generation?

Fashion affects today’s generation with its useless and dented influence that fashion is limited to costly clothes and gadgets. Teenagers are easy targets for those who consider themselves influential personalities under the name of fashion. Many of the time, the child gets intrigued by looking at the lifestyle of another person. They fall into the eye-pleasing trap and try to copy the same. It leads them to lose their own identity and wear fake costly attire to please their hunger for recognition among their friends.

3. How does Vedantu help in essay writing?

Vedantu offers you essays on different topics that have a chance of coming in the exams or already had in the exams. Experts of Vedantu have explained the requirement of the essay and suggested the points to include in a good essay. Go to vedantu.com to explore more topics, and start writing essays of your own to express your understanding of the topics.

4. Does fashion help in your growth?

Yes, fashion does help you grow if you understand the right meaning of it. Following any person and famishing for recognition is not a fashion that can help you grow. It helps you when you understand fashion is more about being right with your choices regarding the dressing, accent, or culture of your community or country. Fashion is nothing more than a term for the things that makes you comfortable and enhance your confidence in being you.

5. Are fashion and trends different?

Yes, fashion and trends are different. The trend follows the fashion; fashion never leaves the frame, it gets highlighted from time to time, and at some particular time, it becomes a trend that everybody follows. Trends have a short life, but fashion stays for life. It gets older with time, like the dhoti kurta culture of India has become old, but it gets rejuvenated with the new look, and it becomes a trend for a while. Fashion is more real than trends.

6. What is Fashion?

Fashion is self-expression in the form of clothing, accessories, footwear, hairstyle, perfume, etiquettes and attitude.

7. Who is known as the Father of Fashion?

Charles Frederick Worth is known as the father of fashion.

8. How is Fashion impacting Today’s Generation?

Fashion has become a cult in this modern era. Youngsters especially blindly want to imitate celebrities and models. They are forgetting the true essence of fashion. They think that fashion is confined to only clothing, footwear and accessories.

9. Why is Fashion Important?

Fashion is important because it is the reflection of our society and culture.

THE INFLUENCE OF FASHION ON EVERYDAY LIFE

By Reginalda Nelumbu | Featured Image by Vitória Santos

“The purpose of fashion is to refute our persistent fear of death”. Decorating ourselves in particular things helps to craft an identity, which creates the illusion of permanency. If we buy things and we define the way we look from what we wear, it makes our existence feel more real and everlasting.”

That’s what they say.

What influence does fashion have in our everyday life?

Fashion contributes to a persons confidence.

When someone tells me I dress nice, it immediately boosts my confidence.  The way you dress can have an effect on your outlook and identity. When you feel good about yourself, you are more likely to feel good inside, treat others better, and have more energy.

It helps people fit in or stand out from the crowd

Colors, patterns and textures of your clothing can easily make you fit in with people or stand out of a crowd.  They way you style your outfits can say a lot about your identity and personality, which would then attach you to a certain type of person, whether you like it, agree with or not.

Fashion represents our history and helps tell a story

Fashion makes one understand how things at a certain time in a certain place influenced other things in a different time and place. It’s only because of this understanding of long-term patterns and repetition in trends, that one is able to do a perfect forecast for the next season. Anthropologists believe that animal skin and vegetation were adapted into coverings as protection from cold, heat and rain, especially as humans migrated to new climates. And now we see designers creating clothing from skin and vegetation as well. To tell the same or a different story than our forefathers.

Fashion is important in society because it has the potential to bring different people together to celebrate their own individuality.  Your clothes tell a story about YOU, about who you are and also tell a story about who and where you have been. Our clothes reveal not only how styles have changed but how you have, or haven’t, or how you have developed your own style and gained confidence in your look.

4. It allows you to be independent in your thinking and of creativity

Fashion is thinking. Fashion is value. And fashion is creativity. Designers create characters through clothes, much like the writers create through words. Creating fashion means making new forms and figures, images and materials. It allows you to explore different ways to express yourself.  It is up to each individual to decide what colors, styles and patterns of clothing suit their persona.

How has fashion influenced you?

Include an introduction and conclusion

A conclusion is essential for IELTS writing task 2. It is more important than most people realise. You will be penalised for missing a conclusion in your IELTS essay.

The easiest paragraph to write in an essay is the conclusion paragraph. This is because the paragraph mostly contains information that has already been presented in the essay – it is just the repetition of some information written in the introduction paragraph and supporting paragraphs.

The conclusion paragraph only has 3 sentences:

  • Restatement of thesis
  • Prediction or recommendation

To summarize, a robotic teacher does not have the necessary disciple to properly give instructions to students and actually works to retard the ability of a student to comprehend new lessons. Therefore, it is clear that the idea of running a classroom completely by a machine cannot be supported. After thorough analysis on this subject, it is predicted that the adverse effects of the debate over technology-driven teaching will always be greater than the positive effects, and because of this, classroom teachers will never be substituted for technology.

Start your conclusion with a linking phrase. Here are some examples:

  • In conclusion
  • To conclude
  • To summarize
  • In a nutshell

Not every fashion week can be characterized as friendly, approachable and relaxed. But those are three ways to describe Copenhagen Fashion Week, a twice-a-year event in the capital city of Denmark, a country that has often been ranked among the happiest in the world.

Even though Copenhagen Fashion Week has continued to grow since it began almost 20 years ago, it doesn’t draw the same crowds that gather for shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris. This isn’t a bad thing: As other fashion weeks have become over-the-top spectacles where as much attention is paid to who’s sitting in the front row as to what’s on the runway, Copenhagen Fashion Week has managed to avoid some of the egos and excess that can come with its more established counterparts. (Helping to reduce the excess are sustainability requirements that organizers of the shows in Copenhagen require participating brands to meet.)

Last week, at the latest installment of Copenhagen Fashion Week, the event’s inviting nature was reflected in the crowds and on the runways, both of which were full of people of all sizes and backgrounds. The clothes were similarly diverse.

Brands with notable collections included Remain, which experimented with mesh fabrics and sleek silhouettes, and Henrik Vibskov, which embraced frenetic patterns in vivid prints. On the streets, outfits in white and neutral shades — the types associated with the Scandinavian minimalist aesthetic (and summer ) — contrasted with ensembles incorporating vibrant colors. There were also lots of loose layers and many clothes with flowing proportions, which looked even better on people who were pedaling around the bicycle-friendly city .

Julia Fox: The Family That Chose Me

In an exclusive essay for ELLE.com, the actress, model, and Down the Drain author remembers how her friends stepped in at key moments and set her back on the right path.

On a Christmas morning many years ago, as I observed my friends eagerly unwrapping gifts of thrifted designer shoes and handbags, their faces lit up with pure joy, I had an epiphany. We all shared similar backgrounds: an absent parent here, a perpetually stressed parent there, or parents too wrapped up in their own struggles to be present.

This realization was bittersweet, but mostly sweet. Despite our shared traumas, we had woven something incredibly meaningful—a real family. None of us had a traditional home to return to during the holidays, but we had each other. And so, we ushered in a new, cherished tradition. Every holiday since then, we have opened our home to anyone without a biological family to go home to.

Before finding my chosen family, the holidays were always particularly difficult, especially in a city like New York. Most of my friends would retreat to their lavish homes on Long Island or elsewhere, leaving me to navigate the desolate landscape of Christmas in the city alone. I was too proud to seek companionship and too ashamed to admit I had nobody. I’d lock myself in my room, turning to TV and substances to pass the time, counting down the minutes until the dreadful day was over.

As a child, I felt like an orphan. I was often scapegoated, emotionally neglected, and severely misunderstood. I would often cling to any stranger that would show me an ounce of affection, oftentimes falling into predatory hands. My friend’s mothers could see me for who I was and overcompensate by allowing me to move in with them, just until “things get better at home.” But things never did get better. When I had overstayed my welcome, I would pack up my backpack and move onto the next temporary safe haven.

I became a master at adjusting to ever-changing dynamics and interpersonal relationships. I learned to read people’s moods just by their gaze. I knew when to speak, but more importantly, I knew when to leave. By doing so, I learned how to survive.

The formation of a chosen family is a deeply personal and organic process. The term gets thrown around a lot nowadays, and I can’t help but ask myself: Can you have a chosen family when you have close ties with your biological family? Although this group of loved ones is a beautiful thing, it’s typically born out of isolation, ostracization, and an immense amount of pain. How can you reach your chosen family if you haven’t been lost at sea alone for a lifetime before that?

.css-1aear8u:before{margin:0 auto 0.9375rem;width:34px;height:25px;content:'';display:block;background-repeat:no-repeat;}.loaded .css-1aear8u:before{background-image:url(/_assets/design-tokens/elle/static/images/quote.fddce92.svg);} .css-curasl{margin:0rem;font-size:1.625rem;line-height:1.2;font-family:SaolDisplay,SaolDisplay-fallback,SaolDisplay-roboto,SaolDisplay-local,Georgia,Times,serif;margin-bottom:0.3125rem;font-weight:normal;}@media(max-width: 48rem){.css-curasl{font-size:2.125rem;line-height:1.1;}}@media(min-width: 40.625rem){.css-curasl{font-size:2.125rem;line-height:1.2;}}@media(min-width: 64rem){.css-curasl{font-size:2.25rem;line-height:1.1;}}@media(min-width: 73.75rem){.css-curasl{font-size:2.375rem;line-height:1.2;}}.css-curasl em,.css-curasl i{font-style:italic;font-family:inherit;}.css-curasl b,.css-curasl strong{font-family:inherit;font-weight:bold;}.css-curasl i,.css-curasl em{font-style:italic;} When traditional families fail at providing that foundational support system, it’s only natural that we go out into the world subconsciously searching and attracting those who are in a similar struggle.”

Unlike the conventional family unit defined by blood ties and headaches, chosen family members are individuals who, through shared experience, create a solid intimate and supportive network that transcends time. At the heart lies the fundamental yearning to belong, the desire for companionship, and especially the need for pure and unconditional love. At our core we are all social creatures, seeking connections that nurture our emotional well-being and reaffirm our sense of identity. When traditional families fail at providing that foundational support system, it’s only natural that we go out into the world subconsciously searching and attracting those who are in a similar struggle.

It took years to find my chosen family, but when I did, something clicked. It was magic. It was as if they could feel what I had desperately been missing and they willingly stepped into this void, offering me radical acceptance. This was really put to the test when I had a child of my own. Due to some unforeseen and devastating circumstances, I was left alone with an infant. By that point, I had moved out of the home I had shared with them for over a decade and into a small apartment with a man who would leave me shortly after giving birth. I felt alone again, but mostly, I felt as if I was failing my child and bringing him up in the same conditions I was raised in. It took me a while to ask for help. It took even longer for me to admit to myself that I even needed help. I was 30. Surely, a 30-year-old should have her life together , I thought.

julia fox child

It didn’t take long for my chosen family to hear the things I wasn’t saying. They felt my pain and sprung into action. Fast-forward three years, we’re all living together again under one roof, co-parenting a happy little boy who’s never had to endure the sounds of fighting and yelling. Who only knows unconditional love and support. That’s something I didn’t learn until I found them.

One of the defining characteristics of a chosen family is inclusivity and diversity. These networks often comprise individuals from various backgrounds, sexualities, cultures, and life experiences. It’s this eclectic mix that fosters the empathy and understanding of our interconnectedness. What I’ve learned in my community is that no matter where we are from, we really aren’t all that different.

They also play a crucial role in providing support, especially for individuals navigating non-traditional identities or marginalized communities. LGBTQ+ individuals, for instance, often find solace and affirmation within circles that embrace and celebrate their identities without judgment or prejudice.

I’m sure at this point you’re wondering, “How can I find my own chosen family?” Well, the answer is simple: They will find you. Take the proverbial mask off, the one you put on when you want to fit in. The one you wear so no one will see how special you are. Once you embrace who you are and own your identity, your people will finally be able to find you. It was only when I started practicing radical honesty and humility that I was able to attract one into my life.

We embrace each other’s flaws and we hold each other tighter during the difficult moments.”

In my journey, I’ve learned that family is not solely defined by blood relations, but by the depth of emotional connection and the commitment to each other's growth and happiness. It’s hard work to love someone unconditionally. I know I can be difficult sometimes too. There were so many opportunities for my sisters to walk out of my life, but they chose to stay. And that’s the difference between friends and family. Friends can always leave, but family doesn’t have that option.

The people I surround myself with represent a beautiful tapestry of unique human relationships woven together by love, choice, and mutual support. We embrace each other’s flaws and we hold each other tighter during the difficult moments. We embody the essence of family beyond biological boundaries, offering a sanctuary of acceptance and belonging. As society continues to evolve, embracing the concept of chosen family enriches our collective understanding of human connection and the levels of love that we need to sustain us. For some, it may be the difference between life or death.

Sixties-era model and muse Peggy Moffitt died on Saturday in Beverly Hills at age 86 after a long illness. Her son Christopher Claxton confirmed the news.

A native of  L.A. , Moffitt was born at Hollywood Hospital and attended Marlborough School for girls. She studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City in the 1950s, where her instructors included Sydney Pollack and Martha Graham and her classmates were Robert Duvall and Suzanne Pleshette. That led to a short contract at Paramount Pictures and a series of supporting roles.

When she met her future husband, photographer William Claxton in L.A. in 1958, he was working as an art director for a jazz record label, and inspired her to try modeling. They married in 1959 in New York, and had a son, Christopher, in 1973.

She was also a trained ballet dancer, which influenced her taste in clothing and her balletic style of modeling — and caught the eye of Gernreich, known for his avant-garde, body-con style.

Moffitt first met Rudi when she was in high school, in 1954, and she was working at the Jax clothing boutique in Beverly Hills. “They hit it off and had a lot in common,” her son said. “They approached art and design in a similar way and had a big appreciation for dance — and humor in design.…One of the many examples was when Rudi won his first Coty Award, she wore a women’s suit he designed with one shawl lapel and one peak lapel. At the time, she thought that was hilarious. And Rudi had fun watching her perform as well.”

“He once said to me, ‘You inspire me when I don’t want to be inspired,’” Moffitt said of the relationship with Gernreich, a four-time Coty winner.

Claxton contributed to her legacy with his iconic images. In 1967, they produced what is regarded as the first fashion video, “Basic Black: William Claxton w/ Peggy Moffitt,” and in 1991, they released the Taschen-published tome, “The Rudi Gernreich Book.”

“They all inspired each other, and there was a synergistic effect between them, especially with Rudi. Every time he needed to get photos done, he called my father,” Christopher said.

Moffitt modeled in New York, London and Paris, and appeared in the cult fashion films “Blow-up” (1962) and “Who Are You, Polly Maggoo” (1966).

“Fashion fell off a long time ago. I can’t tell you to the minute that it died. Probably when everybody started wearing pants,” she told WWD in 2016. “Fashion is really dead except for…dream occasions or fantasy.”

Moffitt never stopped wearing Gernreich’s designs, owning more than 300 pieces, many one-offs in custom color combinations never produced.

Some of her pieces were featured in “Fearless Fashion: Rudi Gernreich” at the Skirball Cultural Center in L.A. in 2019, including the 1964 topless bathing suit, or breast-exposing monokini, styled for the show with a bandeau underneath that had the word “censored” written across it. Critics in Moscow pointed to the bathing suit as the decline of morality in the U.S., the Pope banned it, and at least two American women were arrested for wearing it, but Moffitt always defended it: “Rudi’s aim was to free the breast rather than glorify it sexually,” a quote on the gallery wall read.

“My mom agreed to model it but had certain terms. Only her husband would photograph her in it on a closed set and [the photos] would not be published in men’s magazines. The image was printed fully topless in WWD, and had a big media impact and a lot of people were outraged,” Christopher said.

Over the years, the icon tired of talking about it in interviews. “She said imagine doing something that took one second in your life and having to talk about it for the remainder of your life,” he said.

Moffitt, who long held a trademark on Gernreich’s name (he died in 1985 at the age of 63) had several forays into the fashion business herself. She collaborated with Comme des Garçons on T-shirts and reinterpretations of Gernreich designs in 2003, and in 2016 launched her own leisurewear label with L.A. designer Evelina Galli, who represented the style personality in a licensing deal with Sage Licensing in 2019.
