Essay on Unity is Strength 500 Words in English

Below we have provided Unity is Strength Essay in English, suitable for class 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 & 10.

The proverb “Unity is Strength” implies that we remain stronger if we are together and can face almost any problem. On the opposite, we always fall short if we keep struggling and get egoistic in our efforts. The proverb was created centuries ago and is still commonly used. We will be able to do better in our lives if we recognize its meaning and apply it in our lives.

A variety of similar slogans have appeared periodically. Some of these include: “United we stand, divided we fall”, “Union gives strength” and “Strength is in Unity.” While these proverbs’ words are subtly different, their meaning is the same. There were also several stories written to justify this proverb. Some of these are the farmer and his children’s tales, the flock of pigeons, the lion and four bulls. “Unity is Strength ” is moral in all these legendary stories.

Importance of Unity

There is so much rivalry in today’s world that people have forgotten the “Unity is Strength” principle. They wish to excel and see their rivals as a barrier to progress. The contest begins off at the school level. When children need to have strong moral standards, parents get busy contrasting them with peers, relatives and friends.

They continually nag and push their children to surpass others, so all the kids worry about how they can beat their peers. They see them as rivals rather than remaining together with their peers and colleagues and try chances to demonstrate them. This mentality only gets better over time. The proverb holds good, not only for professional and personal ties but also for society as a whole and the country. Everyone enjoys the places and cultures in which men work united.

People talk and wave at their neighbours, support one another in emergencies, defend their neighbour’s house while they are out and stay ready to help one another. In today’s times, a community like this can be a positive thing because most people feel isolated and depressed. It is also essential for children who often feel isolated in the traditional family structure during their entire development.

Stories Related to the Proverb

The tale of a farmer and his sons was among the famous story describing this proverb.

The farmer was working hard to support his family day and night. He also had four sons who kept quarrelling with one another. The farmer told his sons to get one stick each to show them the value of staying united. He told them to split their sticks into two. His sons split their respective sticks without any effort. He then told them to make a set of four sticks and split them. Everyone tried to crack the set, but each one of them failed to do so. The farmer then explained to them that when we stay united or stay together, no one can divide us. His sons grasped the message and vowed to stay together.

“The Lions and four bulls”, is another famous story that illustrates this proverb well. Four bulls travelled through the forest and stayed together. So, the lion could never catch them, though he longed to kill them. One day a fox conspired and broke trust among them. Then the bulls roamed for food and worked independently. They were all isolated. The lion understood this and benefited from the scenario. He pursued them all one at a time and succeeded in the hunt. This illustrates clearly the real sense of the saying, “Unity is Strength.”

Historical and Contemporary Usage:

The roots of the proverb trace back to the Dutch Republic, where it was coined for the first time. Over the centuries, its influence has transcended boundaries, finding a place in the national coats of armed forces in countries like Haiti and Bulgaria. Belgium adopted it as a motto after the Revolution of 1830, and other nations such as Greece, Netherlands, Canada, Georgia, South African Republic, Malaysia, and the United States have also embraced this proverb as a guiding principle.

Stories as Illustrations:

The attempt to break the bundle failed, illustrating the strength of unity. This story serves as a poignant reminder that standing together makes us unbreakable, emotionally, physically, and mentally. It's a lesson the sons internalized, vowing to stay united henceforth.

Another compelling narrative involves a lion and four bulls in a forest. The unity of the bulls thwarted the lion's attempts to hunt them. However, when a fox sowed discord among them, breaking their unity, the once invincible bulls became vulnerable. The lion seized the opportunity, hunting them down one by one. This allegory vividly underscores the true meaning of "Unity is Strength."

Educational Significance – Unity is Strength in Education:

This collaborative spirit extends beyond academics, fostering values of teamwork and cooperation that are instrumental in preparing students for future challenges.

While the importance of standing united is imparted to children through moral science lessons, its significance often fades amidst the complexities of adulthood. Embracing the wisdom of "Unity is Strength" is not just a personal choice but a collective responsibility. In a world where individual accomplishments are celebrated, fostering a culture of unity is paramount for societal well-being. The expression, “Unity is Strength”, is something beyond a proverb. It is demonstrated from the beginning of humankind. At the point when partitioned, people have neglected to accomplish what they had sought after. Be that as it may, together, they have had the option to win a great deal.

Unity is additionally a significant factor inside the family and social gatherings. Relatives, who adhere to one another and bolster one another, have perpetual bonds. They can take care of one another’s issues in a significant manner. If there is no unity in companionship, breaks in the establishment start and perhaps a misconception can happen.

Long and Short Speech on Unity is Strength

Unity means the state of being whole or joined as one. It doesn’t matter whether it is between 2 persons or 2 billion people. When they are on the same page, and work for the betterment of each member in that lies unity. And unity is truly a strength as our history is evidence of many such incidents. It is through unity that people work as a team, and teamwork is always more valuable as it brings people together. In this article of Speech on Unity is strength we will explore different ways to present such speech. It can be a long or a short speech on unity.

Long Speech on Unity is Strength

This format can help students to delve deeper into the topic of Unity is Strength. And such a speech of 500 words is useful for students in grades 8-12.

Good morning everyone, I am Abc (mention your name) here to speak on the topic of Unity is Strength. In our country, there is a diversity of different kinds of people, coming from different districts, regions or states of the country. And because we fought back and rebelled against the British who had for aeons treated us as slaves in our country we could attain independence.

We would not be living in a free nation like ours if it were not for the unity demonstrated by our freedom fighters who sacrificed so much for us. History is evident for what a revolution unity can bring. For instance, in the Battle of Saragarhi, in the year 1897 on 12th September, 21 Sikh soldiers stood united and fought against the Afghans bravely. They gave their lives for the country.

Today abroad, wherever there are people belonging to a particular nation, invariably form a community. Unity of communities is seen where they have a history of shared experiences and relate to one another. This feeling of belongingness because of unity gives them the strength to live their lives courageously in a foreign land far away from home.

Unity is not just limited to the nation. It is a broad term that can also be associated with unity among families, students in a classroom, marriages and religion. When the students are united, they can deal with difficulties easily and also stand up for their rights when one is discriminated against or ill-treated. When in a marriage the couple is united, it is beneficial for the family as they can hold each other through the ups and downs of life.

Sadly today, there is less unity among the people and they are hell-bent on rising above one another. In the name of religion, colour and caste, many battles and wars are fought. Like in our country, the Muslim community being the minority faces so many allegations even though they are not at fault. I have come to know of many such harsh experiences because my best friend belongs to a Muslim family.

The political lens portrayed as the world view should not mislead us. The truth that crime can be committed by anybody despite their religious inclinations creates divisions and people don’t unite with others at a time of crisis. When you believe such a piece of information it robs you of many beautiful experiences as you become apprehensive and cynical of others. And that is no way to fully enjoy or live one life.

Let’s not fall prey to any such trap of divisive opinions and prove to the world once again that unity is strength. We can do this by truly understanding and acting upon it by removing all personal biases. India is the most diverse country and we must be the flag bearers of unity.

Short Speech on Unity

This is a 250-word speech on unity that will explain the meaning and importance of the topic. It can be extremely helpful for students in grades 4-7.

Good morning everyone, respected principal, teachers and students. I am here today to speak on the topic of unity and help understand that unity is strength. In this competitive world that we currently reside in, everyone wants to outperform one another in both the professional and personal aspects of life.

While it is important to be ambitious, one must remember that spending time with family and finding time for the things we love is even more important. Because of this driven nature, we are not spending time with one another. This lack of having quality time has made us more reserved and averse to other people.

This aversion leads to indifference, which creates a division that is the opposite of unity. It is through unity that our country fought and won against the British for independence. And today we do not bother to acknowledge each other for anything.

The world that we live in is also diverse and our nation alone stands at the peak of diversity. And if we don’t stand united on all fronts then who are we supposed to reach out for? All that is good, lies in unity, it is through unity that we can move mountains and face every adversity or threat.

Unity must be an inherent part of families, marriage, communities, religions and nations regardless of our differences. Fights and misunderstandings based on our differences are baseless, our uniqueness and diversities should be our strength.

The spirit of the phrase unity is strength, fits our nation the best and we should also embrace it as individuals and live our lives in peace and harmony.

10 Line Speech on Unity is Strength

This is a brief speech on unity helpful to make understand its meaning to the students in grades 1-3.

The famous quote ‘United we stand, divided we fall’ truly captures the essence and spirit of Unity is a strength.

Earlier we were slaves to the British empire because they divided and conquered us.

They could do that because we all lacked unity among ourselves as countrymen and an entire nation.

And once we rose to the occasion and stood together putting our united front we attained independence after 200 years of rule in 1947.

Now we are further divided because we lack empathy and tolerance for one another.

Even belonging to the same nation has divided us by so many differences that we focus on.

Instead of that, we should focus on first being a human being and find our commonality in that and not in religion or caste and colour.

It is our differences that make us beautiful, like no finger of a palm is the same and each has its own use. We as people also should stay united like that.

Unity also gives us the courage and strength to fight back and have faith in our support system even when a marriage becomes successful when the individuals are united.

It is an important quality and it keeps the families and communities together.

importance of being united

We cannot deny the importance of staying united in different situations. Believing in these words of wisdom and acting according to them helps build a better life and ignoring them can create difficulties. A simple example might be a family situation. If all the members of a family work unitedly with each other, then all of them will benefit from it. However if they impose each example on each other and try to impose their ideology and rules on each other they will never be happy.

Besides creating a stressful environment at home, which is particularly bad for children’s development, such an approach will encourage outsiders to take advantage of the situation. If we look around, those families, where people are respected and taken care of, they are happy. Children get a healthy environment which is essential for their development and adults in such families also lead a healthy life. They depend on each other and take the responsibility of fulfilling all their duties with pleasure. They do not crib, complain or plot against each other.

On the other hand such families where people do not stand by each other and try to humiliate others not only ruin their life but also their future generations. People from such families often feel lonely and find themselves engulfed in depression.

This is the right time when people should recognize the importance of staying united and leading a healthy and happy life in their lives.

The competition starts from the school level itself. At that time when children should be brought up with good moral values, at that time their parents compare them to their classmates, Busy doing with cousins and friends. They constantly think about their children and put pressure on them to be ahead of others and so all these children think about the only thing that they have to do to surpass their peers. Instead of mingling with their classmates and friends, they see them as their rivals and look for opportunities to advance.

This attitude gets stronger over time. In corporate offices or different professions these days the competition for all things has become extremely tough. Even if a project is handled by all the members of a team, everyone tries to work as a team and take credit instead of focusing on it.

Usage of proverb – there is strength in unity

This proverb has been used in many places for centuries. It originated in the Dutch Republic where it was first used. It is currently inscribed in the national coat of arms of the Armed Forces of Haiti and Bulgaria.

Belgium used it as its motto after the Revolution of 1830. Other countries that have used this motto in the past include Greece, the Netherlands, Canada, Georgia, the Republic of South Africa, Malaysia and the United States.

Stories related to this proverb

To explain this proverb, a famous story is of a farmer and his sons. This farmer was working very hard. He worked day and night to serve his family. He had four sons who always quarreled with each other. The farmer was worried that if they continued to fight against each other like this, others would easily take advantage of the position of his sons.

To make them understand the importance of staying united, the farmer asked them to bring a wood. The farmer asked to break the wood into two parts. His sons broke their wood easily. Then the farmer asked to make bundles of those four woods and try to break it. Each one of them tried to break the bundle one by one but all failed. After this the farmer explained that when we get united then how we become strong. When we are together no one can break us. On the other hand if we keep fighting with each other and do not support each other then it is easy for others to break us emotionally, mentally and physically. The farmer’s sons understood this lesson and then promised their father to remain united.

Another famous story that explains this proverb well is that of a lion and four oxen. There were four bulls in a forest who always walked in a group and lived together. This was the reason that the lion was not able to hunt them although he had a strong desire to eat those bulls. One day a fox conspired against them and broke their friendship, after which these bulls started living separately. They roamed alone in search of food and lived separately. The lion came to know about this and took advantage of the situation. The lion hunted each one of them one by one and was successful in his mission. This clearly shows the true meaning of the proverb that “unity is strength”.

Children are taught the importance of being united as a part of morality lessons. However its importance is often overlooked. If we follow this in our life then the world will be a better place.

There is strength in unity: Suitable example – Essay 4 (600 words)

There is strength in unity means that if we stand together we will always be strong mentally, physically and emotionally. As Matty Stepanek pointed out, “Unity is power… wonderful things can be achieved when there is teamwork and mutual cooperation”.

There is strength in unity The proverb applies to relationships

People in this world have become so blinded by power and success that they want to be ahead of their relatives, colleagues and friends. They live in personal and professional rivalry with each other. They may not understand that they can grow and enhance their skills if they share their knowledge with others and help each other. People from other teams or departments can benefit from this situation when we go up against our own team members and start competing with them in the office.

Distrust is another reason why people remain isolated. This fact is especially true when it comes to a husband and wife relationship where couples often doubt each other. They question each other over small things and are suspected of cheating or lying. Sometimes outsiders take advantage of this situation. They foster suspicion and create conflict between the two to fulfill their own selfish motives. It has a negative effect not only on husband and wife but also on their children. If husband and wife stay united and protect each other then no one can create a rift between them.

In many families brothers and sisters fight with each other and give rise to enmity between themselves. This often leads to the division of property or the family business. In such a case outsiders take advantage of the situation and take possession of a large part of the property. If siblings unite then they will be able to improve the business with their joint efforts and skills.

There is force in unity also on institutions and nations.

This saying applies not only to professional and personal relationships but also to the entire society and nation. Such areas and societies where people live together are loved by all. The people of these areas meet their neighbors with a smile, help each other in distress, They guard their neighbor’s house when the neighbor is not at home and are always ready to help each other. They celebrate all the functions together and organize some other social functions. In today’s times when most people are suffering from loneliness and depression, such a neighborhood can prove to be a boon. It is also good for the all round development of children who often feel lonely in nuclear family system. The chances of thefts and robberies are also less in such institutions. The same thing applies in the context of the country. If we stop fighting among ourselves because of our small things then we can never be strong as a nation.

Similarly different nations around the world are fighting with each other to prove that they are better than each other. Today every nation has nuclear weapons so many terrorist organizations have been formed and so many corrupt people are trying to humiliate each other. People are living in constant fear. If we stop all these bad practices and unite then the world will become a better place to live in.

India’s freedom struggle is a suitable example

India’s freedom struggle is one of the best examples of “unity is strength”. The British government used the tactics of division and policy to consolidate its hold in India but the citizens of the country soon understood this manipulative strategy. They all stood together and drove the British out of the country.

There is no doubt about the fact that our strength lies in unity. Many stories in the past as well as real life incidents have proved this. We should follow the path of unity.

Unity is Strength Essay 1 (200 words)

Unity is Strength is a proverb that almost everyone has heard of. It often forms a part of the moral science course in junior classes. The meaning of this proverb is simple yet profound. While it simply means that we must stay united in order to stay stronger however practicing this can be as difficult especially in today’s competitive world. It is ironic how we are taught to stay united yet made to compete against each other at every step in our life.

A number of related proverbs such as “Union is Strength”, “United We Stand; Divided We Fall” and “Strength is in Unity” have been coined in the past. Many stories have also been written to explain how staying united and maintaining cordial relations with others renders strength. When we stand united we can fight anything or anyone as we become more powerful. On the other hand, if we fight with our neighbours, friends and relatives and constantly try to prove that we are better than them then in the end we shall be left alone. This is true for every relationship as well as in our professional life. When we work as a team and help each other out, we are able to work better on a project. On the contrary, if we have conflicts within the team then we are likely to fall short.

Unity is Strength Essay 2 (300 words)

Introduction

The importance of staying united in every situation is emphasized through the proverb – Unity is Strength. This has been used as a motto for various organizations as well as missions across the globe. Though the wordings in many cases have been changed slightly however the meaning remains the same.

Importance of Staying United

We cannot deny the importance of staying united in various situations. Believing in these words of wisdom and acting according to them helps build a better life and countering them can create difficulties. A common example to explain the same can be a family situation. If all the members in a family stand united and help each other with their tasks each one of them will benefit in the event. However, if they counter each other at every instance and try to enforce their ideologies and rules on each other, they shall never be happy. Besides creating a tense environment at home which is especially bad for the growth of the kids, such an attitude will also encourage outsiders to take advantage of the situation.

If we look around, the families where people respect and take care of each other are happier. The children there get a healthier environment which is essential for their all round development and the adults in the family also live a wholesome life. They depend on each other and take it as their responsibility to fulfil all their duties with joy. They do not crib, complain or conspire against each other. On the other hand, the families where people don’t stand by each other and are busy trying to put the others down do not only ruin their own life but also that of their coming generations. People belonging to such families often feel lonely and end up in depression.

It is time people should recognize the importance of staying united and imbibe it in their life to live a healthier and happier life.

Unity is Strength Essay

Unity is Strength Essay 3 (400 words)

The proverb, Unity is Strength implies that when we stay united we stay stronger and can withstand almost any problem. On the other hand, if we keep fighting and become selfish in our endeavours we often fall flat.

Unity is Strength – Related Proverbs

The proverb came into being centuries back and is still used widely. If we understand its importance and implement it in our lives, we shall be able to do better in our lives. A number of related proverbs have sprung up from time to time. Some of these include “Union is Strength”, “United we Stand, Divided we Fall”, “Strength lies in Union”, “Union gives Strength” and “Strength is in Unity”. Though the wordings of these proverbs vary slightly, their meaning is the same. It is that when we are united we are stronger compared to when we move alone and plan against our own people.

Many fables have also been written to explain this proverb. Some of these include the stories on the farmer and his sons, the flock of doves and the lion and four bulls. The moral of all these stories is “Unity is Strength”. Many of these have been taught to us in junior classes.

Unity is Strength – the Concept Seems Forgotten

While children are taught the importance of staying united during their school days however they are not given the right kind of environment to practice it. There is so much competition in today’s world that people have forgotten the concept of “Unity is Strength”. They are only running after success and see their peers as a hindrance in the same. The competition begins at the school level itself. At the time when good moral values must be inculcated in children, their parents are busy comparing them with their classmates, cousins and friends. They constantly nag their children and pressurise them to outperform the others and hence all these children can think about is to defeat their peers. Instead of standing united with their classmates and friends they view them as their competitors and look for opportunities to show them down.

With time this attitude only grows stronger. In the corporate offices these days, or for that matter in every profession, the competition is extremely tough. Even if a project is to be handled as a team everyone tries to steal the limelight and take the credit rather than focusing on working and winning as a team.

There are situations when we need to take up tasks as individuals and work upon outperforming others. We must work accordingly during those times. However, we must not breed the feeling of rivalry against others.

Unity is Strength Essay 4 (500 words)

In today’s times, where there is cut throat competition with every individual trying all his might and applying every method (fair or unfair) to reach the top, very few recognize the importance of the proverb, “Unity is Strength”. It has only become confined to motivational lectures and inspirational books. Very few people actually understand its importance and apply it in their lives. But those who do are actually more satisfied and content in every sphere of their life.

The Usage of the Proverb – Unity is Strength

The proverb has been used at various places since centuries. It finds its origin in Dutch Republic where it was used for the first time. Presently, the national coat of the armed forces in Haiti and Bulgaria has this inscribed.

Belgium took this as their motto post the Revolution of 1830. Other countries that have used this proverb as their motto in the past include Greece, Netherlands, Canada, Georgia, South African Republic, Malaysia and United States.

Stories Related to the Proverb

One of the famous stories explaining this proverb is that of a farmer and his sons. This farmer was very hard working. He toiled day and night to serve his family. He had four sons who always quarrelled with each other. The farmer was worried that if they continued to stand against each other people will easily take advantage of the situation.

In order to make them understand the importance of staying united, the farmer asked them to get one stick each. He asked them to break their stick into two. His sons broke their respective sticks effortlessly. He then asked them to make a bundle of four sticks and try to break it. Each one of them tried to break the bundle one by one but failed. The farmer then explained how we are stronger when we stand united. Nobody can break us when we are together. On the other hand, if we fight and do not support each other, it is easier for the others to break us emotionally, physically as well as mentally. His sons understood the lesson and pledged to stay united thereafter.

Another famous story that explains this proverb well is that of a Lion and four bulls. In a forest, there were four bulls that always moved in a group and stayed together. This is why the lion was never able to hunt them down though he longed to eat them. One day, a fox conspired against them and broke their friendship. Now, these bulls went their own way. They roamed around alone in search of food and lived separately. The lion learned about this and took advantage of the situation. He hunted each of them one by one and succeeded in the mission. This clearly shows the true meaning of the proverb, “Unity is Strength”.

Children are taught the importance of standing united as a part of their moral science lessons. However, its importance is often overlooked. The world would be a better place if we inculcate this in our lives.

Unity is Strength Essay 5 (600 words)

Unity is Strength implies that if we stand together we shall always be stronger mentally, physically and emotionally. As Mattie Stepanek elaborated, “Unity is Strength…when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved”.

Unity is Strength Proverb Applies to Relationships

People in this world are so blinded by power and success that they want to be ahead of their relatives, colleagues and friends. They get into personal and professional rivalries with each other most of the times. They do not understand that they can move ahead and enhance their skills if they share their knowledge and help each other. When we go against our own team members and begin to compete with them in an office setting, people from the other teams or departments benefit from the situation.

Another reason why people fall apart is because of mistrust. This is especially true when it comes to a husband and wife relationship. Couples are often seen doubting each other. They question each other for the smallest of things and doubt them of cheating or lying. Many times outsiders take advantage of the situation. They fuel the doubt and create conflict between the two to fulfil their own selfish motives. This does not only have a negative impact on the two but also on their kids. If the husband and wife stay united and defend each other no one can create a rift between them.

In many families, brothers and sisters fight with each other and develop rivalry. This often happens due to the division of property or family business. In such a case, the outsiders take advantage of the situation and end up grabbing a large share. If the siblings stand united they shall be able to grow the business better with their joint efforts and skills.

Unity is Strength Applies to Societies and Nations

The proverb does not only hold good when it comes to professional and personal relationships but also for the society and nation as a whole. The localities and societies where people stay united are loved by all. People living here meet and greet their neighbours with smile, help each other out in crises, guard their neighbour’s house when they are away and are always ready to help one another. They celebrate all the functions together and conduct other social gatherings every now and then. In today’s times, when most people are suffering from loneliness and depression such a neighbourhood can be a boon. It is also good for the all round development of the kids who often feel lonely in the nuclear family system. The chances of thefts and robberies in such societies are also low. Same goes for the nation as a whole. If we stop fighting over trivial matters among ourselves, we can never grow stronger as a nation.

Similarly, various nations around the globe are busy fighting with each other in order to prove they are better than the other. Today, every nation has nuclear weapons, so many terrorist organizations have been formed and there are so many corrupt people trying to pull each other down. People are living in constant fear. If we stop all these mal-practices and become united the world would become a much better place to live.

India’s Freedom Struggle is an Apt Example

India’s freedom struggle is one of the best examples of “Unity is Strength”. The British government used the policy of divide and rule to strengthen its ground in India. But the citizens of the country soon understood this manipulation tactic. They all stood together and drove the British out of the country.

There is no doubt about the fact that our strength lies in unity. Several stories as well as real life incidences have proved the same in the past. We must thus follow the path of unity.

Government’s Role in Building Unity

Unity can be achieved if each individual is ready to leave his individual interests and work for the betterment of the nation as a whole. Undoubtedly this spirit must be inborn. But the government can play an important role in building unity among people. Few steps in which this can be achieved are as follows:

End Corruption-

A country can never be prosperous if its political system is corrupt. So, the political leaders must be chosen with utmost care. Also, the government must make it possible by imposing the required legal measures.

Lower Economic Disparity-

There is a lot of economic disparity in our country. As we can see that rich people are becoming richer day by day and the poor are getting poorer. This makes the poor people adopt the criminal means that hamper national development. The government must bridge this gap.

Educate People-

People must be educated about many things related to the country’s development and also about the importance of unity. This should be made a part of the school curriculum. Many other means are also there through which it can be emphasized.

Thus, we see there are uncountable benefits of staying in unity. We can accomplish big tasks, rely on the people in times of need and nurture youth power in a better way. Safety and security can be assured by the national unity. Every citizen must work towards having full unity in the country.

Short Essay on Unity is Strength

The phrase, “Unity is Strength”, is more than just a proverb. It has been proven since the beginning of mankind. When divided, individuals have failed in achieving what they had aspired. But together, they have been able to conquer a lot more. Take a look at your local history. You will surely notice how groups of people have stood for a certain cause, and because of their strength, their fight has had a powerful effect.

Unity is Strength implies that if we stand together we shall always be stronger mentally, physically and emotionally. As Mattie Stepanek elaborated, “Unity is Strength…when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved”.

Unity is an important factor even within a family and social group. Family members, who stick together and support each other, tend to have lasting bonds. This enables them to solve each other's problems in a valuable manner. If there is no unity in friendship, cracks begin to form in the foundation and could potentially lead to misunderstandings. French leader, Napoleon Bonaparte, believed that “There are only two forces that unite men - fear and interest.” However, the term interest, here, is roughly used. People can be united because of their need for a sense of belonging, which has nothing to do with common interests. They could also be united because of a shared history or past, as is the case with citizens of a nation. A lot of social groups have been able to get desired results because they stand united. Their attempts are directed towards a single goal, which increases the chances of success.

Factors like trust, encouragement, understanding and love help maintain unity among people. As long as good thoughts motivate people, they will stand united and be stronger for it. The moment there is a weak link in the group, everything collapses. Remember to stand tall against all hardships. There is no doubt about the fact that our strength lies in unity. Several stories as well as real life incidences have proved the same in the past. We must thus follow the path of unity. We should think beyond petty interests and work united for much broader goals of bringing prosperity and progress in our society and country.

Unity is strength

The proverb 'Unity is Strength' shows the value of unity in life. Unity helps us in enjoying every moment of life. In the good moments of a marriage, in the sad moments of sickness and death, it is the unity of the well wishers that makes the pleasure great and despair less. A united family, a united society or a united nation is always powerful. The story of the farmer and his quarrelling sons is well know  to everyone. The sons could easily break each stick separately. But when the sticks were tied into a bundle, nobody could break the bundle.

We can learn the same lesson from an army. The strength of an army is the strength of all the soldiers acting together as one. Similarly, the success of a hockey team or cricket team is the result of united efforts. We should follow this principle in our personal lives. We should never indulge in quarrel with our friends and relatives.

This is a very important message that people should pass on to their children. They should set an example by creating a healthy environment at home where everyone lives in coordination with each other. However, families are drifting apart these days and people are forgetting the value of staying united.

Today, we see countries fighting with one another over petty issues. People are killing each other because of minor reasons. There is hatred all around. Everyone is busy in his own world and thinks only about himself. In earlier times people lived in joint families and were well connected with their relatives and everyone else in their neighbourhood. They were there for them whenever needed. In today’s time people are seldom aware as to who their next door neighbour is. It is sad that even though we have numerous means to connect with people, we do not bother to contact our loved ones.

It is time people must truly understand the importance of staying united and live cordially with others.

Essay on Importance of Unity – Essay 2 (300 words)

Introduction

Unity is important at every level and at every step in our life. People who learn the importance of staying united and follow it live a happy and content life. Those who do not understand its importance are often faced with various difficulties at different stages in life.

Proverbs Emphasizing the Importance of Unity

The importance of unity has been stressed upon by way of various proverbs. Some of these include: “United we stand, divided we fall”, “Unity is strength” and “Unity is strength, division is weakness. Each of these proverbs lays stress on the importance of staying united to achieve our goals and emerge successful in both our personal and professional life.

People around the world have believed in these proverbs since centuries and follow the path of unity.

India’s Struggle for Freedom – Best Example of Unity is Strength

One of the best examples of the strength of unity is the Indian struggle for freedom. The British were mighty powerful. They controlled and tortured Indians for years. However, even the powerful British officials had to give up when Indians came out together and stood united against them. Many patriotic leaders emerged during those times. Each had his own ideologies and tried to fight the British accordingly. These leaders inspired vast number of Indians who came out in large number to fight against the tyranny of the British.

Several protests and processions were carried out during that period. The British government was shaken by these events. People realized the importance of standing together and soon their efforts paid off. The British had to leave the country owing to the mass involvement of Indians in the freedom struggle. Had only a few people come forward to fight, the British would have easily silenced them and continued their rule.

Thus, we see, by staying united we can fight even the biggest of problem. Our strength lies in staying united.

Essay on Unity in India – Essay 3 (400 words)

India is a country with diverse cultures and traditions. People belonging to various religions, castes and creeds live in our country. The beauty of our country is that there is unity in diversity. People of different origins live in peace and harmony in our country.

Staying United: A Part of Indian Culture

Ours is a country with rich tradition and culture. Staying together and helping each other is a part of our culture. Our joint family system is one of the biggest examples of the importance we give to staying united. The joint family system had prevailed in our country for centuries. Unlike the modern times, in the past the families did not only live together but also bonded well. People sat together, chit chatted and had their meals in each other’s company. Staying united helped them in many ways.

One of these was managing the finances. The male members of the family went out to work and managed the finances of the family. The entire load of bearing all the expenses did not come on one person alone. This way the elderly people did not feel left out or lonely as is the case today. The kids also got good company which helped in their growth and development. Children got good values from their grandparents as they lived with them the entire day.

People in our country did not only live united with their immediate family members but also bonded well with their neighbours and extended family. People stood by each other and acted as a great support system for one another.

Young Indians’ Idea of Unity

While the elder people still promote the idea of staying united, the young generation is slowly drifting apart. Owing to the growing use of technology, they are all engrossed in their own world. However, even though they may not be aware as to who their neighbours are or may not visit their relatives often this does not mean they do not understand the importance of unity. They come together whenever there is need. The youth of our country stands united to raise voice against the social evils as they know the strength of unity. There have been many instances where in people have come out in large numbers to protest against different crimes.

India has set an example about the advantages of staying united in the past. The newer generation also believes in the power of unity although their ways of expression may be different. For how else can people of varied cultures and castes live together in harmony?

Essay on Advantages of Unity – Essay 4 (500 words)

Unity is of utmost importance. Many stories as well as real life incidences have proved how staying united can render strength to people and help them lead a harmonious and fulfilling life. However, many people still do not understand the importance of staying united. They keep fighting over insignificant things and ultimately end up lonely.

Advantages of Unity

Here are some of the advantages of unity:

  • Help and Support

People who stay united together are never left alone in adversity. They help each other and provide moral as well as financial support when in need. On the other hand living in isolation and oblivious to the people around you, might make you feel insecure and an introvert.

  • Good Guidance

When we stay united as a part of the society and are in good terms with everyone around, we can seek guidance from them for both personal and professional matters. Elderly people or those who are more learned and experienced provide good guidance on various matters and we can handle them well.

  • Proper Growth

Staying united is good for our growth and development. Staying together in unity with each other helps in sharing of ideas and opinions which is quite essential for our minds to develop well. In families and societies where people stay united and help each other, children get a healthy environment to grow. This is good for the all round development of children.

  • Source of Motivation

When we work together, we are motivated and encouraged to work harder. We push each other to accomplish the goals and this works as a great motivational factor. We also encourage and appreciate one another on every achievement. This again works as a motivational force. This way people are motivated to work even better and achieve greater goals.

A person who works alone has to motivate himself on his own and it becomes harder at times.

  • Greater Accomplishment

When we work together as a team, we are able to accomplish greater goals. We help each other and can overcome various hurdles together. If there is a rift in the team and each individual looks for his individual benefit then it is hard to achieve the common goal. There have been numerous examples wherein people have lost games and projects only because they began fulfilling their own small selfish motives instead of working as a team to achieve the main goal.

  • Fighting a Mission

Fighting a mission becomes much easier when there are greater numbers of people involved. Many social evils and unjust practices have been fought and eradicated in the past only because people came out in large number to fight against the same. A single person can initiate a cause but cannot fight all alone. It is only when he gets good support; there are chances of winning a battle.

Thus, we see there are numerous benefits of staying united. We can accomplish big tasks, rely on the people in times of need and nurture young minds in a better way if we stay united.

Essay on Role of Unity in National Development – Essay 5 (600 words)

As Mattie J.T. Stepanek said, “Unity is strength…when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved”. Staying united helps individuals, society as well as the nation as a whole. A nation where people live in unity has better chances of development compared to those where there is hatred and crime all around. Unity plays a major role in the development of a nation.

Work towards Common Goal

When people live in unity with each other they look forward to work towards a common goal rather than satisfying their own selfish motives. They love their nation as well as their fellow citizens. They understand the fact that they would be able to grow and have a better lifestyle only when there is national development. They also understand that national development is possible only when they help each other in achieving their goals rather than dragging each other down. This goes a long way in the development of the nation.

However, unfortunately in India as well as many other countries, people do not realise the power of unity. They only think about themselves and work for their benefit rather than working for the betterment of the nation.

End Hatred among Citizens; Lower Crime Rate

A country in which people live in unity there is peace and harmony all around. They do not fight with each other in the name of religion, caste, culture or any other thing. They respect and value each other and stand by each other in the hour of need.

They understand that their true power lies in staying and working together rather than planning against each other. There is no hatred among citizens of such country and thus the crime rate is low. A country where the crime rate is low would certainly develop at a faster pace.

Government’s Role in Building Unity

Unity can be achieved if each individual is ready to shed his individual interests and work for the betterment of the nation as a whole. While the spirit must be inborn, the government can play its role in building of unity among people. Here are a few ways in which this can be achieved:

  • End Corruption

A country can never prosper if its political system is corrupt. The political leaders must be chosen with utmost caution. They must take it as their responsibility to stay united and work towards the common goal of developing the nation rather than pulling each other down and juggling money for personal benefits.

  • Lower Economic Disparity

There is a lot of economic disparity in our country. The rich people in our country are becoming richer by each passing day and the poor are getting poorer. This creates grudge among the poor sections and they often take to criminal means that hamper national development. The government must bridge this gap and pay fair wages to everyone so that each citizen is motivated to indulge in productive tasks.

  • Educate People

People must be educated about the importance of staying united. This must be made a part of the school curriculum and must also be emphasized by various other means. Only when people understand the importance of staying united they will work towards achieving it.

Thus, we see unity plays a major role in the development of a nation. Children must be taught the importance of staying united from the very beginning. They must be told as to how it can do good for them as well as their country. Government must also do its bit to keep the people united so as to ensure they work jointly for the development of the nation.

  • Proving the Thesis

Unity is the idea that all parts of the writing work to achieve the same goal: proving the thesis. Just as the content of a paragraph should focus on a topic sentence, the content of an essay must focus on the thesis.  The introduction paragraph introduces the thesis, the body paragraphs each have a proof point (topic sentence) with content that proves the thesis, and the concluding paragraph sums up the proof and restates the thesis. Extraneous information in any part of the essay that is not related to the thesis is distracting and takes away from the strength of proving the thesis.

An essay must have coherence. The sentences must flow smoothly and logically from one to the next as they support the purpose of each paragraph in proving the thesis.

Just as the last sentence in a paragraph must connect back to the topic sentence of the paragraph, the last paragraph of the essay should connect back to the thesis by reviewing the proof and restating the thesis.

Example of Essay with Problems of Unity and Coherence

Here is an example of a brief essay that includes a paragraph that does not support the thesis “Many people are changing their diets to be healthier.”

People are concerned about pesticides, steroids, and antibiotics in the food they eat.  Many now shop for organic foods since they don’t have the pesticides used in conventionally grown food.  Meat from chicken and cows that are not given steroids or antibiotics are gaining popularity even though they are much more expensive. More and more, people are eliminating pesticides, steroids, and antibiotics from their diets.     Eating healthier also is beneficial to the environment since there are less pesticides poisoning the earth. Pesticides getting into the waterways is creating a problem with drinking water.  Historically, safe drinking water has been a problem. It is believed the Ancient Egyptians drank beer since the water was not safe to drink.  Brewing beer killed the harmful organisms and bacteria in the water from the Nile. There is a growing concern about eating genetically modified foods, and people are opting for non-GMO diets.  Some people say there are more allergic reactions and other health problems resulting from these foods.  Others are concerned because there are no long-term studies that clearly show no adverse health effects such as cancers or other illnesses. Avoiding GMO food is another way people are eating healthier food.

See how just one paragraph can take away from the effectiveness of the essay in showing how people are changing to healthier food since unity and coherence are affected. There is no longer unity among all the paragraphs. The thought pattern is disjointed and the essay loses its coherence.

Transitions and Logical Flow of Ideas

Transitions are words, groups of words, or sentences that connect one sentence to another or one paragraph to another.

They promote a logical flow from one idea to the next and overall unity and coherence.

While transitions are not needed in every sentence or at the end of every paragraph, they are missed when they are omitted since the flow of thoughts becomes disjointed or even confusing.

There are different types of transitions:

  • Time – before, after, during, in the meantime, nowadays
  • Space – over, around, under
  • Examples – for instance, one example is
  • Comparison – on the other hand, the opposing view
  • Consequence – as a result, subsequently

These are just a few examples.  The idea is to paint a clear, logical connection between sentences and between paragraphs.

Unity Is Strength Story With Moral For Kids

Shaili Contractor

Origin And History Of Unity Is Strength

Story type of unity is strength, story characters, unity is strength story for children, story summary, moral of the story, how can children apply the moral of the story in their real life.

Children love to hear Panchatantra’s stories. These stories help to teach them the value of goodness and impart important life lessons with entertainment. Panchatantra stories generally uses animals to present a particular message, moral or lesson for children. “Unity Is Strength” story in English is one such moral story of kids that will make them understand the importance and power of unity. It is the story of a flock of pigeons who got stuck in a trap by a bird catcher. The birds set themselves free using their mind and unity.

Read the ‘Unity Is Strength’ full story to know what happened to the pigeons and how they saved their life.

The origin of the “Unity Is Strength” story lies in the stories of Panchatantra. These are a collection of folktales and fables that are believed to have been originally written in Sanskrit. It is also believed that Pandit Vishnu Sharma wrote these stories more than 2500 years ago.

Panchatantra stories offer insight into human behaviour, where the characters are entirely from the animal kingdom. The exact period of the composition of these stories is not clear, but it may vary from 1200 BCE to 300 CE. This makes Panchatantra the oldest collection of Indian fables.

The stories of the Panchatantra offer our little ones and us the possibility of making our lives more prosperous and more meaningful with the help of moral stories. The stories make us aware of the fact that solutions lie within ourselves. The use of animals to present this important message is particularly significant since animals are not sentimental.

“Unity Is Strength” is a moral story that can be read to kids as a bedtime story also.

Let’s look at the characters of the story before reading it.

Here are the characters of the “Unity Is Strength” story with moral.

  • A flock of pigeons
  • Pigeon King

Here is the “Unity Is Strength” story for children.

Once upon a time, there was a flock of pigeons that were searching for food. Their king led the flock. One day, after flying for a long distance, they were very tired. The pigeon king encouraged them to fly a little further in search of something to eat. There was one small pigeon in the flock. He picked up some speed and found some rice scattered beneath a banyan tree. So, he informed the other pigeons, and all the pigeons landed near the banyan tree and began to eat scattered rice.

All of a sudden, a net fell over the pigeons, and they were all trapped. The pigeons saw a hunter approaching them, carrying a huge club. The pigeons sensed the danger and desperately started fluttering their wings, trying to get out of the net, but to no avail. The king of pigeons had an idea. He asked all the pigeons to fly up together, carrying the net with them. The king said that there is strength in unity, and when everyone will work together, we will be able to lift up the net with us.

Each big and small pigeon picked up a portion of the net, and together they flew off carrying the hunter’s net with them. The hunter looked up in astonishment but couldn’t do anything about it. He tried to follow them, but the flock of birds were flying high over hills and valleys. They flew towards a hill near a city of temples where a mouse lived. They knew that the mouse was the one who could help them as he was a faithful friend of the pigeon king.

The mouse heard the loud noise of the flock of pigeons approaching. He went into hiding. Then, the pigeon king gently called out to him, and the mouse was happy to see him. The king explained how they had been caught in a trap and needed the mouse to gnaw at the net with his sharp teeth and set them free.

The little mouse agreed, saying that he would set the king of pigeons free first. The king insisted that he must first free his subjects and then the king. The mouse understood the king’s feelings and agreed with his wishes. He began to gnaw the net, and one by one, all the pigeons were freed, including the pigeon king.

They thanked the mouse and flew away together, united in their strength.

Below is the summary of the “Unity Is Strength” story for kids.

Once upon a time, there lived a flock of pigeons that flew from one place to another in search of food. The flock was led by their king. One fine day, they were all trapped in a net while eating some rice. The pigeons desperately tried to free themselves and get out of the net, but it was of no use.

Then, the wise pigeon king had an idea. He asked all the pigeons to fly up together at once, thus lifting the hunter’s net along with them. The pigeons obeyed their king and started flying up together, taking the net with them. The hunter was in shock and looked up in astonishment as he saw his net rise into the air with the flock of pigeons.

The flock of pigeons flew towards the house of a mouse who was a faithful friend of the pigeon king. Eventually, the mouse gnawed the net with his sharp teeth and freed the pigeons. The pigeon king and all the pigeons thanked the mouse and flew in the free air once again.

“When you work together, you are stronger” or “unity is strength” are the morals of this story.

In this story, when the flock of pigeons is captured in the hunter’s net, the pigeon king uses his mind and devises a plan that all birds should fly up together. This helped the pigeons to fly away together. If the pigeon king didn’t come up with this idea, the hunter would have caught the pigeons.

The children can apply the moral of the “Unity Is Strength” short story in real life by working together with their peers and friends. This story with pictures will also help children to understand that they should listen to their parents and obey them. Just like the “pigeon king” in the story, our parents our wise and will always guide us to walk on the correct path.

Opinion: The call for unity is missing the point

essay on unity is strength in english

Jonah Goldberg

The single most abused, misused and misunderstood word in American politics is “unity.”

All presidential candidates vow to unite Americans. Nearly every pundit and public intellectual laments the lack of unity.

“When America is united, America is totally unstoppable,” Donald Trump declared in his inaugural address. “With unity, we can do great things. Important things,” insisted Joe Biden in his. Kamala Harris proclaimed in her acceptance speech at the Democratic convention that “in unity, there is strength.”

Such statements get to the first problem with the cult of unity: It’s an appeal to power. There is strength in unity, sure, but strength is an entirely amoral concept. Strength to do what?

Lynch mobs are unified, which is why they are terrifying. The namesake of fascism, the fasces, was a bundle of rods representing the idea of strength in numbers.

I’m not saying unity is necessarily bad, but its goodness depends entirely on what you do with it. If politicians routinely used the term “power” instead of “unity,” more people might understand that skepticism is warranted when politicians demand or claim it for their agenda.

Second, our infatuation with unity runs against the grain of the Constitution. Presidents often talk as if they are running for prime minister in a parliamentary system. They promise to do things on “Day One” of their administration that a president cannot do alone under our system.

Trump vowed to be a “dictator” on Day One of a second administration (with specific regard to immigration and oil drilling). In 2019, Harris promised that if elected president, she would repeal the Trump tax cuts on “Day One.” Presidents can issue (often dubious) executive orders on Day One, but they cannot pass or repeal laws. That’s Congress’ job.

And Congress isn’t elected to follow the president’s orders. The often cockamamie idea of electoral mandates for presidents is irrelevant. Legislators are answerable to their own voters and constituents.

If Trump wins the election, Democrats aren’t going to feel particularly obliged to rubber-stamp his agenda. And if Harris wins, Republicans won’t reflexively defer to hers. A president can tell senators or representatives, “Look, I was elected to do X” all they like, but at least some can fairly respond, “Yeah, and I was elected to try to stop you.”

This is a constitutional feature, not a bug. My American Enterprise Institute colleague Yuval Levin underscores this point in “American Covenant,” the best book on the Constitution I’ve read. The Constitution was designed to foster political competition — between the executive and legislative branches, among and within the states, and between the federal government and the states. The separation of powers, the structure of Congress and constant elections are intended to create conflict and tension — “productive tension,” in Levin’s words.

This competition is supposed to yield better and more democratically legitimate policies through vociferous disagreement. The Constitution’s goal is disagreement, not superficial agreement forced by populist appeals to unity.

The most beneficial form of unity is consensus reached by fierce but good-faith argument. The only other form of unity that should be expected or demanded of Americans is fidelity to the Constitution’s rules on how these arguments are conducted and how officials use the power granted to them. No president can be a dictator on any day so long as the Constitution remains in force.

I dislike the asininity and demagoguery that polarization produces as much as anybody. But the problem is not disagreement so much as an inability to disagree better. Indeed, much of what drives our acidic disunity is the partisan desire to steamroll political opponents with forced unity and power not granted by the Constitution.

Politicians’ frequent assertions that “the time for debate is over” amount to an undemocratic insistence that “my critics need to shut up and get with my program.” Sometimes critics are well advised to shut up, but only if they have decisively lost the argument. And even then, our system protects dissent because the founders recognized that free speech is indispensable to a free society and that the majority sometimes gets it wrong.

When that happens, the dissenters should be able to say, “We told you so.” I’m hoping to live long enough to say exactly that when we return to the system of productive political disagreement enshrined in the Constitution.

This is a transcript of Vice President Kamala Harris’s speech on Thursday night in which she formally accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination for the presidency.

OK, let’s get to business. Let’s get to business. All right.

So, let me start by thanking my most incredible husband, Doug. For being an incredible partner to me, an incredible father to Cole and Ella, and happy anniversary, Dougie. I love you so very much.

To our president, Joe Biden. When I think about the path that we have traveled together, Joe, I am filled with gratitude. Your record is extraordinary, as history will show, and your character is inspiring. And Doug and I love you and Jill, and are forever thankful to you both.

And to Coach Tim Walz. You are going to be an incredible vice president. And to the delegates and everyone who has put your faith in our campaign, your support is humbling.

So, America, the path that led me here in recent weeks was, no doubt, unexpected. But I’m no stranger to unlikely journeys. So, my mother, our mother, Shyamala Harris, had one of her own. And I miss her every day, and especially right now. And I know she’s looking down smiling. I know that.

So, my mother was 19 when she crossed the world alone, traveling from India to California with an unshakable dream to be the scientist who would cure breast cancer.
