Impact of Mobile Phones on Society: Essay Introduction

Introduction of subject, statement of opinion, thesis statement about cell phones, reference list.

The telecommunication industry takes a considerable place in the modern life of society. The purpose of cell phone usage can vary in accordance with the needs and expectations of the users.

Different features of mobile phones enable marketers to position them according to the desired segments in the market, making their services helpful for everyday human needs. The invention of the mobile phone has revolutionized the social culture of individuals in the United States.

The analysis of mobile phones should be based on the examination of subject interference with society and popular culture. Mobile phones are considered to be electronic gadgets being used for communication; their portable system allows individuals to travel with them throughout the world.

They have become an integral part of modern communication means, allowing individuals to interact frequently and providing close interaction between people for private and business purposes.

Technological progress changes human values replacing them with our thirst for mobility and communicative satisfaction. Cell phones have a considerable effect on the modern social life of humanity, making it convenient and mobile.

Cell phones appear to be an integral part of social life, satisfying human needs through communication rate growth; using cell technologies simplifies our everyday activities.

Affection on Communication Frequency

Social culture in the United States has been revolutionized by the invention of the mobile phone. The frequency of communication between individuals has greatly increased (Bucy 2005, pg.39). In the United States, over 80% of the population owns a cell phone (U.S. and World Population Clocks, 2009. Para.4).

Over 50% use cell phones for communication with friends, giving an opportunity to raise the level of communication between individuals. Technologies replaced written forms of communication, making the communicative process more frequent and convenient for users.

A large number of people also use their mobile phones to access such social networks as Facebook and Twitter, in addition to sending out electronic mail (Goggin, 2006, p.14). It is unthinkable for two lovers in today’s world to go for consecutive days without communicating with each other, especially if they are miles apart. Mobile phones serve the purpose of private relationships, business cooperation, and talking with friends.

Cell Phones for Business Communication

The invention of the mobile phone has led to the introduction of new businesses as well as the promotion of new business communicative means.

Businessmen communicate with suppliers using mobile phones for the purpose of making orders and confirming deliveries; service providers, such as investors and stock brokers, communicate with their clients instantly. Some businesses use short message services to advertise their products (Belch & Belch, 2004, pg.23).

Any changes in products, the introduction of new products, and promotions are communicated to customers through text messages. Over 20% of companies communicate today with their clients using mobile phones (Winder, 2009, pg.228).

Mobile phones have led to the invention of new businesses, where some people have invested in selling the gadgets, and others deliver premium content, for example, ringtones, alerts, logos, and others. Some people have secured jobs with the companies that produce the gadgets. Mobile phones have made the work of business easier; they stimulated business development on the international level, introducing mobility and flexibility to our life.

Mobile Phones Characteristics

Modern cell phones are equipped with cameras, radio, TV, Internet, calendar, phonebook, alarm clock, and reminders; these conveniences integrated into cell technology make our everyday activities easier. It should be stressed that a phonebook allows an individual to store contacts of family members, friends, and other acquaintances. Memory cards have a massive memory that can be used to store all this information in the mobile phone.

Calendars in mobile phones are used to confirm dates, and one needs to have a manual calendar (Keith 2009. Para.5). Alarm clocks and reminders help individuals to be punctual and memorize important events, respectively.

Cell phones serve the method of internet access for 85% of users; this allows them to get access to important newspapers and news sites, for example, BBC. Mobile phones have led to the disposal of many gadgets that were used before their invention. In addition to the positive effects of mobile phones, the gadgets also have some negative effects on society.

They have been a cause of accidents, especially text messaging while driving. Young people have been addicted to text messaging, harming their studies. Nevertheless, human responsibility for personal work and education should help people to sponge the positive side of innovational technologies opportunities.

The technological era provided people with a new communicative means, the mobile phone, making our life easier and more convenient. This technology became an integral part of the business sphere, traveling, cultural interaction, and social activities.

It is necessary to stress that mobile phones provide people with unlimited opportunities simplifying our thirst for communication and information access. The service provided by mobile technologies stimulated communicative growth, providing positive effects on private and business life.

People enjoy the opportunities provided by mobile technologies, balancing their entertainment and business values and contribution to social life.

Opportunities

Challenges and obstacles.

In the modern world, almost everyone has a smartphone, starting as young as elementary school. However, their presence in the classroom has been highly debated with some schools issuing widespread bans while others attempt to embrace the technology. Smartphones have undoubtedly changed the way people communicate. Instructors fear, albeit correctly most of the time, that cell phones will be used for non-educational activities. However, issues with enforcement of cellphone bans as well as numerous benefits that the smartphone apps and student attachments to their devices can bring from an educational perspective suggest potential to utilize it as an academic tool. Cellphones can be used as a vital educational tool for organization, learning, and communication but can easily become a detrimental distraction, which supports an approach that encourages smartphone use in a supervised and responsible manner in the classroom.

Mobile phones can be used as beneficial tools for information and organization in the academic context in the classroom. According to Torbjörn (2017), “the tasks for which the students wanted to use mobile phones were doing calculations, searching for information, translating words, communicating, keeping a calendar and taking pictures” (p. 74, par. 3). Information seeking and organizational concepts are vital to a student’s success in the classroom. Using mobile phones to search for additional information for help on their assignments or watching resources provided by instructors can greatly enhance the classroom experience and student performance. Data is key in the modern information society, and mobile phones offer access to resources and the Internet with information that is more updated than textbooks for example. With teacher guidance, the class curriculum can be supplemented with relevant and reliable digital materials that offers tools for copying, highlighting, or taking screenshots of vital facts to be studied later. Meanwhile, certain application on smartphones can improve organization by helping maintain due dates on assignments and class announcement through notifications.

Cellphones can be used to reinforce material that is learned in the classroom through peer communication. According to Ngesi et al. (2018), “these two technologies proved to be not only viable but also sustainable because of both their pervasive nature and their affordability” (p. 10 par. 6). Their study focused on foreign language utilization through SMS and Mxit instant messaging and found that it could be a vital tool for follow-up teaching and student reinforcing the English language in direct communication during and outside class. Unfortunately, historically the well-regulated and rigid frameworks of formal education are not a good fit with connectivity of mobile phones. Mobility and connectivity of mobile phones has the potential of being integrated into the curriculum, and depending on the region and type of education, the device has significant flexibility on its place in the classroom activities and beyond (Torbjörn, 2017). Based off this study, it is prevalent that students continue to utilize mobile phones whether they are banned or not, and most often for social media and communication. Therefore, it is in the best interest of instructors to embrace this activity and find ways which smartphones can be flexibly included to reinforce curriculum and learning without becoming overwhelming distractions.

Mobile phones hold the opportunity of revolutionizing the education sector by introducing alternative learning processes and methods of instructional delivery known as ‘new learning.’ “According to proponents of new learning, mobiles facilitate designs for personalized learning in that they are responsive to difference and diversity in the way learning occurs. They facilitate designs for situated learning by providing learning during the course of the activity” (Valk, Rashid, & Elder, 2010, p. 120, par. 4). Mobile technology digitizes and innovates student learning, also helping students build on critical skills of the 21st century which are creativity, communication and collaboration, research, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, and digital citizenship and technology operations (Keengwe et al., 2014). Mobile phones which commonly include capabilities of virtual reality, real-life rendering, and significant processing power can be used to facilitate interesting and authentic learning, introducing real-world problems or projects in a virtual setting that are beneficial to subject-specific learning.

As technology capabilities increases, mobile phones contribute to new directions in instruction such as mobile learning (mLearning) that can be utilized both inside and outside the classroom, improving access to education. According to Valk et al. (2010), mLearning “can also increase access in those situations where cost represents a significant barrier to learning. For those in rural or remote areas where environmental and infrastructure challenges hinder other learning modalities…mLearning presents great opportunities” (p. 119, par. 4). Smartphones are valuable technology in terms of capabilities for their price point. In many cases, it may improve access to learning and technology for populations unable to afford laptops or tablets that are commonly less efficient in comparison to smartphones at lower-end price ranges. mLearning can contribute inside the classroom as well through activities such as collaborating on a virtual project with students from other schools to tuning in as a class to a digital lecture with participative elements. This concept ultimately alters the character of education due to the nature that mobile technology has with the instructional process.

While devices have benefits to learning, they hold significant challenges as well, particularly the distraction and social components of smartphones. Distraction is commonly cited as the biggest challenge and concern to educators in regard to technology in the classroom. According to Keengwe, Schnellert, and Jonas (2014), “…many school leaders only see them as a hindrance to meaningful learning especially considering their host of likely distractions from student ring tones, e-mails, texting, tweeting, and cheating” (p. 444, par. 2). Distracting elements as noted by students and teachers alike include notifications and access to social media, texting or gaming. With access to social media communication, outside the classroom social elements such as harassment and bullying can come into the classroom resulting in greater disturbances (Keengwe et al., 2014). In the classroom, the cellphone has become almost symbolic as youthful rebellion against authority, by shifting away from classroom tasks. Distractions may also negatively impact students that are low-achieving or have attention disorders in classroom activities where there is a lack of support for structured use (Torbjörn, 2017). While some school districts attempt to resolve this issue by virtually blocking access to certain websites or applications on school grounds or teachers physically monitoring the use of devices in the class, this creates significant management and cost burdens on the school (Dias & Victor, 2017).

Digital learning on mobile devices creates certain technological and practical barriers that can affect limited groups of students as well as the general education process for everyone. According to Dias and Victor (2017), “However not all children have access to modern technology at home not only in developing countries but also in developed countries…Majority of mobile devices used for education seemed to be messy and poorly executed” (p. 341, par. 6-7). There is the concept of accessibility, as not all children will have similar smartphone devices. Different operating systems and technological capabilities of the devices based on cost make it virtually impossible to plan a unified classroom activity. This can also contribute to the mobile phone status among peers, creating unhealthy pressures and addictive behaviors impacting mental health (Keengwe et al., 2014). Use of mobile devices requires constant internet connectivity and other technological issues that may arise such as device malfunctioning, low battery, and other aspects require teachers to have a back-up plan or spend significant time on managing the nuances of these educational technologies (Dias & Victor, 2017).

Cellphones in the classroom are shown to be significantly beneficial on a number of educational tasks ranging from organization to information search, with significant opportunities for academic connectivity and studying. However, applicable evidence shows that there are numerous technological, social, and practical barriers to utilizing mobile phones in classroom settings. Ranging from distractions to technical utility, it can be understood why many instructors are reluctant to adopt this new technology which is touted as ‘transformative’ for education. Going forward as smartphone accessibility and capabilities increases and with a creation of more unified and stable educational networks and applications, potentially the student devices has opportunities. Nevertheless, at this time, banning the devices will have a negative effect and instructors should encourage periodic and independent use of smartphones on some assignments that encourages responsibility and academic interest from students.

The use of mobile phones has an impact on many people in both bystanders and those who are talking through their mobile phones. With the increase in the dependence of many cell phone users on their mobile phones, the conversion is becoming an issue for many people in public places. Research has been undertaken to show the effects that conversations on cell phones affects the driving. There is no research that has been done to show the distraction this has in public places. This paper focused on the effects of a one-sided conversation against two-sided conversation with mobile phone users. It is evident that those people who listen to a one-sided conversation are more distracted than those who hear a two-sided conversation. Cell phones are relied upon for personal communication. Recent research shows that more people are relying on their mobile phones. People have felt that they are emotionally attached to their phones that they are anxious when they are without their cell phones. With the integration of more features to smart hones, it is making cell phone users feel they cannot live without their cell phones. There are personalized features like navigation capabilities, personal organizers and communication capabilities that have made cell phone users feel attached to their cell phones. With these features, most ell phone users feel they have a personal relationship with their mobile phones. Most people have their cell phones being on most of the time. A good percentage of people feel that they should answer their cell phones even if it will interrupt a meeting or an important event. The nature of the conversation that takes place by the cell phone user with the bystanders is what this paper is based on. With this phenomenon of mobile use in public places, it is now becoming evident that more people who are close to the people using mobile phones will be affected. Cell phone use has negative effects on the cognition of someone. There is a need to have a study to study of the effects of one-sided conversations for bystanders. This is so for people who are using their mobile phones while they are in public places. Well controlled research has indicated hat people who overheard one-sided conversations were more likely to be distracted than those who are distracted by two-sided conversations. The use of mobile phones in public places brings a picture of one-sided conversations for those who are standing near the cell phone users. This scenario is common for cell phone users who make conversations in public places. In public communication with the use of cell phones, it is common to have intrusion of cell phone and the bystanders find themselves listening to the conversations than to two-sided communication. The annoyance to the people who hear one-sided conversation is consistent for many users. This is a common scenario that is seen by many users in public places. This is common with the use of cell phones in public places. This can be attributed to the fact that there is no distinction by users of private and public places. This is common because people who use mobile phones in public places usually have private conversations with these phones. It is not common to see people use cell phones in public places to discuss business. Bystanders who get exposed to these private and personal conversations do not have control over the level of interactions and conversations with these cell phone users. This is the reason why they feel annoyed with cell phone users in public places. It has been found out that bystanders who find themselves in situations where they are not free to leave, for example, when waiting for public transport, find the use of cell phones in public places annoying and frustrating. It has also been found out that the lack of control of the conversations is the reason why the bystanders feel annoyed and frustrated with the use of cell phones in public places. Bystanders who overheard a one-sided conversation tend to remember more about what is being discussed than that of two-sided communication. This means that they remembered more words in conversations in single-sided communication than the ones in two-sided communication. This means that there is a tendency to have more distractions in one-sided communication than two-sided communication. Bystanders in public places who listen to cell phone conversations are likely to have correct guesses of what is being discussed in the conversation. This shows that there is a lot of concentration on the subject that is being talked about for the bystanders. This is a cause for distraction and annoyance that the people in public places using their cell phones go through. It is important to understand the causes of the distraction that is being received by cell phone users. People tend to concentrate on the conversations which are single-sided as they try to pierce the pieces together to make something out of the conversation. People who listen to cell phone conversations in public places are found to be confident in what is being discussed in phone conversations. People in public places tend to concentrate on people who use their cell phones. This is a point of concern as people tend to get distracted by these conversations. The use of cell phones has increased connectivity and reachability to many people. The way people interaction is changing because of the use of mobile phones. It is accessible, and easy to use and increases the connectivity for many people who have hitherto been unconnected. There is a concern about the use of mobile phones in public places. The use of mobile phones in public places is becoming a common phenomenon. With this connectivity and the simplicity of communication, the use of mobile phones is bringing a lot of tensions with strangers. This is so because of the fact that strangers get information about the conversations that take place with those talking with their mobile phones in public places. Upon the introduction of cell phones as a means of communication, there has been an increase in the rate of daily activities as a result of the fastest means to communicate. Cell phones have enhanced interaction in any place considered to be safe when it comes to socializing. It has helped in maintaining relationship with families, friends and also business partners and in addition it has boosted business activities resulting to balanced economic growth. However social crimes are not left when it comes to cell phone usage, in that strangers are not left behind as a result of eavesdropping when there are communications taking place in public. (Aoki, , and Downes 4) this has fostered a threat on the spillage of personal and private information. Cell phone usage in public is common; people use cell phones in restaurants, public transits, theaters, church and in social gatherings like weddings. Strangers are characteristics of public places and during communication, they will not help but eavesdrop when they are next to someone talking loudly over the phone. When people eavesdrop on a communication they will try to connect the missing information and therefore conclude on the topic under communication. Cell phone use in public is therefore not good at it destruct strangers since it’s a common and natural behavior for people to eavesdrop when a person next to them is communicating. Cell phone use in public places should be eradicated. This should be undertaken because of the distraction that this trend is bringing. There should be policies put in place to bring out the guidelines that should be followed when undertaking conversations using their mobile phones. Cell phone use in public place affects the person communicating and the people surrounding that person. As it affects the listener or rather the eavesdropper, it also affects the person communicating since its automatic that a private and confidential detail could be spilled. This situation happens mostly in places where one cannot find a secret place to communicate an example is when one is communicating in a public transit. Communicating in the presence of a friend also can distract attention since the person communicating tends to give more attention to the caller than the companion (Katz, and Aakhus 82). When people use cell phones in public, they could be doing so to keep them busy. It could be annoying when one finds themselves next to a person communicating, thus one does not have a choice but to either eavesdrop or avoid. This occurs due to the fact that one does not have the power to control the conversation, the time it starts, its content and how long will conversation last. It’s therefore an obligation of the bystander to be calm for the power rest upon the person communicating. According to Humphreys, the decision on the use of cell phones in public is upon the phone user to utilize technology example the use of caller id which provides a choice of either to receive a call or block it (Ran, and Leung 72). Cell phone use in public places has led to a change in ethical issues in social places. It has blurred boundary spaces existing in private and public. Firstly the public space has been turned to private spaces by individuals who display unpleasant behaviors by acting as if they are alone. Cell phones are important in our social aspects but it makes people to break the ethics in the social place. Secondly, it is shown by a study that use of cell phone fulfills a need of belonging in human through connecting with others.

There should be order with the use of cell phones in public places. They should be policies set to guide uses while they are conversing using their cell phones in public places. Cell phones should have limits on their usage and should follow some procedures. This should be undertaken as research shows that cell phone use brings a lot of distraction and annoyance to the bystanders. This will eradicate distraction of use of mobile phones in public places.

Surgeon General Calls for Warning Labels on Social Media Platforms

Dr. Vivek Murthy said he would urge Congress to require a warning that social media use can harm teenagers’ mental health.

Surgeon General Vivek Murthy speaking and holding a microphone. He is wearing a dark blue military jacket.

By Ellen Barry and Cecilia Kang

The U.S. surgeon general, Dr. Vivek Murthy, announced on Monday that he would push for a warning label on social media platforms advising parents that using the platforms might damage adolescents’ mental health.

Warning labels — like those that appear on tobacco and alcohol products — are one of the most powerful tools available to the nation’s top health official, but Dr. Murthy cannot unilaterally require them; the action requires approval by Congress.

The proposal builds on several years of escalating warnings from the surgeon general. In a May 2023 advisory, he recommended that parents immediately set limits on phone use, and urged Congress to swiftly develop health and safety standards for technology platforms.

He also called on tech companies to make changes: to share internal data on the health impact of their products; to allow independent safety audits; and restrict features like push notifications, autoplay and infinite scroll, which he says “prey on developing brains and contribute to excessive use.”

In an interview, Dr. Murthy said he had been deeply frustrated by the platforms’ reluctance to do so.

“I don’t think we can solely rely on the hope that the platforms can fix this problem on their own,” he said. “They’ve had 20 years.”
